Book Description
The words of Sai Baba, "God equals man minus ego," are echoed by Dr. Joshua David Stone in his seminal work, Soul Psychology. A veteran transpersonal psychologist and family counselor, Dr. Stone teaches us how our entire understanding of ourselves and others is completely changed when we integrate our soul into the way we live our lives. Based on eighteen years of Dr. Stone's practice, this book is not a psychological approach to spirituality. It is rather a spiritual approach to the psychology of everyday living.
At the heart of Soul Psychology is emotional healing through the dismantling of the "negative ego," a psychological cancer that prevents us from acting in accordance with our soul's true nature and purpose. This negative energy drives us to find our security outside of ourselves; whereas the only true security is one that is grounded in having a right relationship with self and a right relationship with the Divine. To guide us onto this path of spiritual ascension, Soul Psychology offers a stimulating new viewpoint that expands the boundaries of traditional spiritual practice, providing a wealth of accessible and powerful meditations and exercises, including
- The six-step process for healing and spiritualizing emotions
- The spiritual science of the seven rays and the twenty-two chakras
- Methods for clearing negative psychic energies that inhibit soul growth
- The one hundred most common pitfalls and traps on the spiritual path

Bound to be a Classic!.......2002-10-12
I never thought I would gain so much insight, understanding and practical guidance from a single book. Dr. Stone has put together a modern compilation of techniques and psychospiritual systems in an easy to understand format. I definitely recommend this book!
A truly life-enhancing book.......2000-11-13
I hate to dispute the opinion of another, but I wonder if our friend below has actually read any of this book other than the blurb? Judging by his comments, I have to say I very much doubt it. 'Soul Psychology' is an extraordinary book that takes a look at psychology within the context of the mind and soul as opposed to just the mind and personality. The result is an inspiring, life-enhancing book, packed with various tools and techniques that are easy to use and extremely effective in dealing with negative emotions and mindsets and reprogramming the subconscious mind (I can vouch for their effectiveness!). Words cannot describe how empowering and invaluable this book has been. Simply put, it's a classic, visionary and pioneering work - I highly recommend it!
Negative ego NOT ego, read the book!.......2000-02-11
Having fully read and explored this book, the reader understands that the author is speaking of the 'negative ego' which needs to be cleared so that perceptual filters are no longer distorting one's perception of reality. The author does not negate the fact that the part of ego necessary for daily activity is important. This is the same part of ego that Sai Baba comments on by saying: 'God equals man minus ego'. Please read this book before you make a review on it!
Conflict Based view of the Ego.......2000-01-04
This presents a rather outmoded view of the ego as the enemy; rather than as a "mechanism"whereby consciousness is able to focus on the external senses and external reality (i.e the world). Accordingly, where consciousness also focuses on the internal senses and reality, and with the awareness of the multidimensional nature of reality and of the self - the ego is perceived as one (quite useful) aspect of consciousness. Damning the ego feeds the illusion of conflict at the very core of one's self. This illusion may feel true due to information primarily perceived and cognized via the external senses - but this is not the "fault" of the ego. For non-conflict based explorations of the psyche read Jane Roberts, J Krishnamurti, Ken Wilber, or search "multidimensionality". Regarding Sai Baba, the reader is referred to the Neural Surfer where Sai Baba, and other spiritual leaders, teachings and lives are explored and scrutinized.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-25
stories here are developed into longer works later, such as Carrion Comfort, and a couple that are used in some form or another in the Hyperion series.
So, a decent introduction to Simmons, with the wary story 'E-Ticket to Namland' a nice example of something a little different, and Remembering Siri an excellent slice of the Hyperion universe.
He gives an intro on how each story came to be, and Harlan Ellison describes how he discovered him in a story workshop, directly after someone that was completely and utterly incapable of writing a sentence.

Dan Simmons weaves a web of words into a dream-like trance in this collection of short stories.......2006-08-12
This book is a collection of short stories by Dan Simmons ("Song of Kali," "Hyperion") with a foreward by Harlan Ellison. Each story has a unique voice (although all the science fiction stories seem to take place in the same universe) and they are gem-like in their brightness - characterization, description, voice, all is exquisite, bringing you into these little worlds and opening your eyes to sometimes strange and twisted landscapes.
My only complaints are again copy editing nitpicks - for instance, if something needs oil, it creaks, it doesn't creek. When someone agrees with a statement given, particularly during a toast, they say "Hear, hear!" not "Here, here!" Those sorts of things. Also, the plural of bus is buses!!! "Busses" is "kisses." I kid you not - look it up and make fun forever more in the future when you see signs at drive-throughs and restaurants that say "busses welcome."
But that aside, this collection of short stories is amazing. I read it much more slowly than is my wont, as it must be supped and savored like a fine wine - not guzzled like a brew. Enjoy it!
Simmons Collection Lets Us Glimpse At The Novels That Are To Follow.......2006-03-21
One of the first things you'll notice as you read Prayers To Broken Stones, the short story collection by Dan Simmons, is that some of his novels started off in the short fiction scheme of things. "Remembering Siri" is an exerpt from Hyperion and the short "Carrion Comfort" is, you guessed it, an exerpt of Carrion Comfort. Here is Simmons first published story "The River Styx Runs Upstream" as well as the gems from Dark Visions "Vanni Fuci I Alive And Well And Living In Hell", "Metastasis" & "Iverson's Pits." "E-Ticket To 'Namland" is absolutey twisted. The introduction is by Harlan Ellison who claims to have "discovered" Simmons at a Writer's Workshop. True. Does Simmons bury Ellison. Definitely. I always thought Harlan Ellison was way overrated for his piddley achievements and that lousy episode of Star Trek he wrote. Wowzer! And that he is way too much of an a$$hohle extraordinaire. Dan Simmons seems too goo to associate with the likes of him. Anyway....buy the book. You won't regret. A great introduction to Simmons as a writing force.
Dig it!!
Adequate Collection; Evolution of Simmons Into Novelist.......2005-06-20
I've read and have been impressed with Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos and Carrion Comfort, and wanted to explore his short stories to see if they were up to his novel's quality.
Unfortunately, the short stories are mostly from his earlier years and aren't really up to the incredibly high standards he's set for himself with the Hyperion series, Carrion Comfort and other novels.
The stories are adequate, but none of them really stick in the mind after a while. If they were from any other author, I would say there "good" though not excellent, but knowing Simmons, I'd rate them as "just ok". Some of the stories seem to be more concerned with hammering the reader with the "message" rather than telling a good yarn. This is most evident when his rant (err, story) against televangelists. I agree with Simmons viewpoints, but didn't care much for the story.
However, this collection does offer some interesting glimpses into his novels. First, "Remembering Siri" is word for word, a chapter in his later Hyperion novel, and this is where it started. Second, "Carrion Comfort" is probably the best short story in the collection (and hence, the last story in the collection) and this forms the first chapter of Carrion Comfort, the novel. Again, this is where it started. Third, "Eyes I Dare Not Meet in Dreams" forms the basis of his later novel The Hollow Man, with exactly the same characters and premise. You can also see his fascination with the US space program in "Two Minutes Forty-Five Seconds", which was marred by getting the "message" across at the expense of storytelling. He explores the US space program from a different angle later on his novel Phases of Gravity. Lastly, there is a "story within a story" in "The Death of a Centaur" about a teacher telling kids a fantasy story. The story involves Raul (err, Raoul Endymion) guiding an unlikely band of characters to save the universe, battling the Shrike (yes the Shrike) and Wizards (err, The Pax) who are out to get them. The story is, well, standard fantasy fare, but it's interesting to note that he uses this story as a basis of his later Endymion novel.
So this collection is interesting if you're interested in "forensic" analysis of where some of his later great novels came from, but as storytelling tales in themselves, they're ok, not great. Having read both his novels and short stories, I recommend reading more of his novels before plunging into his weaker short stories.
Dan Simmons can do no wrong........2004-12-27
Dan Simmons has the distinct ability to craft sentences in such a way to invoke brilliant images, and instill so much passion into his readers that, like me, they may continually miss their subway stops. "Prayers to Broken Stones" took me to that withdrawn state where my sensibilities of my immediate surroundings declares coup d'etat. This is exactly what a good story should do. Any residual childhood angst over reading that I may have; over sunny August days when I just wanted to play outside, but was stuck with a stack of summer reading material that I'd left for the last minute; all of this evaporates after the first few lines of a well-crafted Dan Simmons story.

Book Description
The meaning of architectural sculpture is essential to our understanding of ancient Greek culture. The embellishment of buildings was common for the ancient Greeks, and often provocative. Some ornamental sculpture was placed where, when the building was finished, no mortal eye could view it. And unlike much architectural ornamentation of other cultures, Greek sculpture was often integral to the building, not just as decoration, and could not be removed without affecting the integrity of the building structure. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of the significance of Greek architectural sculpture. Brunilde Sismondo Ridgway, a world-class authority on ancient Greek sculpture, provides a highly informative tour of many dimensions of Greek public buildings--especially temples, tombs, and treasuries--in a text that is at once lucid, accessible, and authoritative.
Ridgway's pragmatism and common sense steer us tactfully and clearly through thickets of uncertainty and scholarly disagreement. She refers to a huge number of monuments, and documents her discussions with copious and up-to-date bibliographies. This book is sure to be acknowledged at once as the standard treatment of its important topic.
Book Description
The fourteenth century in Europe has been called "the age of adversity." It was a time when medieval society was racked by the Hundred Years' War, the Black Death, and peasant turmoil of the age, saw the decline of its mendicant orders, the "Babylonian Captivity" of the papacy in Avignon, and the rise of wide-ranging heretical movements such as the Free Spirit heresy that disparaged the Church and its sacraments in favor of an immediate experience of God.
In this context John Ruusbroec (1293-1381) lived as a monk in the duchy of Brabant and produced a corpus of works on the spiritual life that has made him the most important Flemish mystic in an age of such greats as John Tauler, Julian of Norwich, and Birgitta of Sweden.
For the first time in English, four of Ruusbroec's most influential writings have been collected in one volume: The Spiritual Espousals, A Mirror of Eternal Blessedness, The Little Book of Clarification, and The Sparkling Stone. This new translation by James Wiseman offers a fresh, contemporary rendering of Ruusbroec's brilliant discourses that caused Abbot Cuthbert Butler to comment that "in all probability
there has been no greater contemplative; and certainly there has been no greater mystical writer."
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding medieval mystic.......2007-02-24
Ruusbroec is a great Christian mystic who lived a very sensible, grounded life as a Catholic priest in what is now Holland. Ruusbroec lived a very rich contemplative life, and wrote many outstanding works on Christian contemplative spirituality. In terms of depth, beauty and greatness, his mysticism stands equal to that of Meister Eckhart and the Rhineland mystics, his contemporaries, and influenced many later spiritual schools in Europe.
The greatest of Ruusbroec's works is the Spiritual Espousals, which outline a pathway by which the human soul is united with God. The process of union follows the classical pattern of Christian spirituality, purification, illumination, and divinisation, whereby the soul is cleansed of sin through baptism and the sacraments and by living the good moral life and is then lead to a deep and intimate communion with God by letting go of one's will and egoistic desires, rising above all creatures in the world, and by turning inwards in a state of inner unity, calm, and silent contemplation. As a master of the Christian spiritual life Ruusbroec gives many stern warnings about spiritual deception and egoism and false forms of Christian spirituality, including those which proclaim freedom to do as one wishes and total union with God's essence.
Ruusbroec's mysticism is strongly focused on love, God's ineffability, and on the Trinitarian nature of God's inner life. Of all the great mystics, Ruusbroec seems to be the one who most strongly saw God's triune side, as opposed to other mystics who tended to see more God's unity and oneness (Eckhart and John of the Cross). This makes the inner nature of God's love, both for himself and for his creatures, an essential part of Ruusbroec's mysticism, an important and biblical truth often forgotten by some mystics and contemplative writers down the ages. Evelyn Underhill rightly praised Ruusbroec as perhaps the greatest of the medieval mystics, because of his awareness of God's triune nature and the infinite love that flows from that ineffable nature.
This work will be a joy to read for any Christian with an interest in spirituality and the contemplative life, and since Ruusbroec was also a fairly sensible and sober fellow, doesn't depart fundamentally from any teaching of either Christianity or the Catholic Church. In this sense then he is a 'safe' mystic, though like many mystics at times his language can lack rigor and coherence and can at times seem to approach more dubious theological notions.

Forever changed .......2004-09-29
If you want to trasform or develop a stronger prayer life, this book is for you. This book took me to the next level of praying. I love how the prayers are full of the Word of God and they are short and to the point. Some of the issues they have a prayer for include being a godly wife, procrasitination, healthy eating habits, time management, finances, etc.
Book Description
These 420 golden keys present the multitude of methods, techniques, affirmations, prayers and insights Dr. Stone has gleaned from his own background in psychology and life conditions and his thorough research of all the ancient and contemporary classics that speak of the path to God-realization. The teachings of Sai Baba and other ascended masters are at the core of these keys, and the author has also drawn upon various spiritual scriptures such as the Bhagavad-Gita and the Bible. Especially valuable are practical methods to support the ascension process.

The revelation of the Millenium........2001-12-31
This Master piece of work by Dr. David is trully incredible. This work is surely for the evolved mystic or spiritual aspirant. I would recommend this book to friends and family members.
A very useful manual..........2000-04-09
As a veteran I found this not too interesting but it reviewed the beginning information and methods necessary for such a journey. And the information about old teaching was elightening.

Book Description
We are not usually big fans of devotion books - they usually contain an abundance of twaddle. Not this one! The author set herself the goal of putting Bible truths into language easy for a child to read and understand. In her own words, "After teaching many children over the years, I have discovered that they do not need watered-down truth. They respond very well to a simple presentation of mature concepts." This is a brand new edition, completely revised and illustrated with beautiful, full page sketches of children and families that complement and illustrate the explanation of each biblical passage.

Profound truths for very young hearts.......2007-09-11
I have flipped through many devotionals for young children and become very disheartened at the shallow truths and petty applications they offer. This book is sweet in its simple pictures and precious examples of profound Biblical truths. I love that it begins with Romans 5:8. It presents the really important principles that provide a foundation for Christian living - suitable for a preschooler! I also like that it doesn't dress up each one to "appear" practical with songs, activities and short-sighted questions. Many activity ideas are offered in the introduction to help you tailor the devotionals for use with different ages and levels of learning. My four year-old and I have had some wonderful discussions over the pages of this book.
Great resource for Christian parents of young children.......2006-05-27
I found this book refreshingly free of big eyed cartoonish characters, as are so common in other children's Bibles and devotionals. The simple drawings are realistic depictions of children and animals, and add to the gentle quality of the book. I used it with my children, in conjunction with a set of two cassette tapes (I don't know if these are still available)that read the story to you, and put the scripture references to music. Buy it for the young ones in your life if you want sound teaching on how God wants us to live, beginning with the youngest.
Customer Reviews:
I absolutely LOVE this book!.......2007-03-09
I love this prayer book. It is an excellent gift for a new mom, for Mother's Day or just to give to any mom for any reason. I have given it over 10 times as a gift. I use this book daily. You can pick this Prayer book up any time and find a prayer appropriate for anything that is on your heart. Every mother should have one.
Powerful prayers for the praying mother.......2005-09-07
Before reading this book, my prayers were the standard prayers I had heard preachers, ministers and others pray over the years. I had NEVER experienced prayer using scriptures. This book not only gives you the words to say, but it also gives you the scripture where those words can be found. EVERY topic you can imagine can be found here, healing, financial breakthrough, protection for your children, guidance at work...I thank God for the treasures I have found in this book...buy this book and get ready to see a transformation in your life and your relationship with Christ!!!
