Book Description
R.N. Wilson's two-volume treatise on reflecting telescope optics has become a classic in its own right. It is intended to give a complete treatment of the subject, addressing professionals in research and industry as well as students of astronomy and amateur astronomers. This first volume,
Basic Design Theory and its Historical Development, is devoted to the theory of reflecting telescope optics and systematically recounts the historical progress. The author's approach is morphological, with strong emphasis on the historical development. The book is richly illustrated including spot-diagrams analysing special systems in modern form. In this
second edition, the historical section has been revised. Also, various improvements to the text have been made, and new systems such as the 4-lens corrector of Delabre and the LADS corrector are now covered. The concluding Part II treats manufacture, testing, alignment, and modern techniques.
Customer Reviews:
A superb and most complete reference about telescope optics.......1998-01-01
Since the mid-19th century and the application by Foucault of chemical silvering to glass mirrors, reflecting telescopes have gradually taken over from refracting ones, to eventually become the dominant telescope concept over the entire 20th century. Reflecting Telescope Optics I (RTO I) is an unequaled reference for those who have interest in the field, be they students, telescope designers, professional or amateur astronomers. In Chapter 1 the author takes us on a short, fascinating and at times surprising, journey through the history of telescope design. A delightful story of men, ideas and fascinating machines. It stems from the account by the author that optics is one of those sciences whose progress is inescapably tied to the progress of experimentation and technology. Chapter I tells about great ideas which, sometimes, had to wait for centuries before being understood and recognized. The second and third chapters deal with Gaussian optics and aberration theory, respectively. Fundamental aspects of Gaussian optics are reviewed in a concise manner, albeit to a level of detail sufficient to make the book a valuable reference for an advanced course on geometrical optics. The same comment applies to the third chapter, which deals with aberration theory of telescopes -in the broadest sense. All relations necessary to set up a design, understand and evaluate its first order (paraxial) properties and third order aberrations are clearly demonstrated and their implications thoroughly analyzed. Section 2.2.5.2, in particular, will be invaluable to set up the basis for a two-mirror telescope design, while section 3.2.4 provides all necessary information to evaluate its aberrations. Tables and practical examples provide most useful illustrations to the theory, and serve as well for quick reference when reviewing properties of existing designs. A thorough review of one- and two-mirror design solutions is provided in sections 3.2.6 and 3.2.7, together with detailed illustrations and numerical examples. Section 3.3 provides much detailed and useful information on third order aberrations. A unique and most complete review of wide-field telescope designs, from Schmidt and Maksutov solutions to less known three- and four-mirror designs, is proposed in section 3.6; off-axis designs are addressed in section 3.7, together with a detailed analysis of the effects of decentering of 2-mirror telescopes. Even if this is certainly not its main purpose, there is little doubt that these sections will retain the attention of amateur telescope makers as well. Elaborating on a generalization of the Schwarzschild Theorem, the author demonstrates the relation between the number of optical surfaces and the achievable compensation of third order aberrations. The four-mirror designs with spherical primary and secondary mirrors derived in section 3.6.5.3 pave the way for giant telescopes beyond the 10-m range. Despace effects are reviewed in much detail (section 3.8), unfortunately in the restricted case of two-mirror designs only. As such effects can be of utmost importance with regards to preservation of optical quality and may come to play a role in a trade-off between otherwise equivalent designs, it seems to me that a broader -and, in view of its tremendous complexity, simplified- account would have usefully complemented the review of three- and four mirror designs of section 3.6. A brief but quite complete account of diffraction theory and its relation to aberrations is provided in section 3.10. This section is essential to the completeness of RTO I; it provides the key to understanding image formation and properties, and appeals to the broadest range of readers. Chapter 4 covers field correctors and focal extenders/reducers in great detail, and provides a brief account of atmospheric dispersion correctors, thereby adding to the completeness of RTO I. Finally, theory meets reality in chapter 5, which provides a delectable and most instructive account of major telescope projects -and ideas related to them- from the early 19th century until the mid-1980's. It should be pointed out that, although RTO I deals with telescope optics in a largely theoretical manner, realistic constraints and limitations are given due regard, a consequence of the author's impressive experience in telescope design and fabrication. This review would be incomplete if no acknowledgment were made to the rigorous and consistent formalism of the author, as well as to the useful indices, list of symbols, tables and figures, the most complete bibliography, and the unique portrait gallery of major figures in the field. Indeed, a unique reference in a superb presentation.

Book Description
This book is a survey of the most important directions of research in transcendental number theory - the theory of irrationality, transcendence, and algebraic independence of various numbers. There is a special emphasis on the transcendence properties of the values of special functions. The book contains few complete proofs, but rather gives conceptual discussions of the central ideas behind the proofs. For a reader who has no specific background in transcendental number theory the book provides both an overview of the basic concepts and techniques and also a guide to the most important results and references.

with a sort of esprit ..........2005-07-27
Like Renaissance artists who transposed the Jesus-story to Florence, the famous French Photographer Bettina Rheims (* December 18, 1952, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris, descendant of Amschel Moses Rothschild) and Serge Bramly (* January 31, 1949, Tunisia, now french philosopher and scientist of art history) tried to ignore the visual traditions, largely that of the Renaissance, willing to create a new modern iconography by turning the subject to photography. A little bit irritating, because the project is fluctuating between serious art and stylistic kitsch, influenced by quotations of art-history and, on the other hand, influenced by modern advertising camerawork. Illustrating the 'Xmas-scene in the stable to Bethlehem they try an optical translation into our present: Jesus is born in the location of an automobile repair workshop illuminated by the pair of headlights of a small transporter van. Instead of a donkey a cat watches the birth, mother Maria sits easily dressed not on straw but on a cement bag, in place of shepherds some garage-mechanics hurried in, who present daisy-flowers to Mary, taking care not to stamp into the puddles of oil on the floor. Of course it is an impressive, strange attack on our figurative conception traditions, which can be forgotten not easily. We see the naked-dancing Salome with the bloody head of the Johannes on the tray; we see Mary Magdalene with legs spread, breasts exposed and stiletto heels; we see locations in the Hospital Cochin, others on the isle Mallorca - and after all (or at first?) we are shocked by Jesus hanging on the cross as a naked young woman, clad only in a loincloth - seen on the book cover; but if you are looking inside, you will notice, that the woman is crucified on the left cross of three, the middle-cross is empty, on the right side you will notice a man. But please consider: Jesus' crucifixion is a symbol for every human being, women inclusive. Nevertheless it provoked just enough outrage in Europe. However I think this project shows an acceptable way of searching for a new kind of modern iconography. Between all infuriated sacrilege-sensitive souls of the political correctness-wing you can find some amusing stories of art-reception: The models, actors and musicians, posing for the great last evening diner-scene - they a few weeks later established a music group with the name "12 Apostles". Bettina Rheims and Serge Bramly linked gravity and irony, majesty and triviality - maybe this is the sort of esprit, which can only prosper in France ...
I.N.R.I........2000-12-08
The cover of this book will make some outraged at first but I strongly recommend they read the text and then view the photos again. Unlike some photographers who use modern religious images to purposely provoke Christians this book is provocative yet very respectful of religion. The ancient telling of Christs life is beautifully shown in the setting of today with thought provoking images ranging from angels to his birth.Good view.
Making christianity vogue..........1999-10-28
That's right, this is Christ's life and gospels portrayed as if it were for a special millenial edition of Vogue. Quick summary: lots of dramatic stills of beautiful, androgenous, young adults playing the roles of Christ, Mary, the Apostles, Judas, etc. in contemporary settings like a garage (aka, the manger) or a ghetto in the USA.
Even if you are staunchly anti-christian, the images have their own evocative appeal. Re-envisioning the monopoly of renaissance icongraphy into contemporary media and form is an interesting premise (which the book jacket alludes to) but the images smack too much of hipsterism and model-pretty allure to stand as a serious enough retelling of an old story. It does, however, reinvigorate and loosen the stodgy fixity that bibil ical references often have for many folks. (I realize these last two sentences may sound a bit at odds with each other but the book does bring up contradictory feelings). The book may bring up questions of blashpemy but I think the textual support helps substantiate the photographs which otherwise would appear as mere stylizations passing for something more meaningful. There's quite a bit of frontal nudity which may offend many Christians and prudes but as the Book of Ecclesiastes says, and I only paraphrase, "For what does a person who has never experienced temptation really know?".
Book Description
Volosinov's important work, first published in Russian in 1929, had to wait a generation for recognition. This first paperback edition of the English translation will be capital for literary theorists, philosophers, linguists, psychologists, and many others.
Volosinov is out to undo the old disciplinary boundaries between linguistics, rhetoric, and poetics in order to construct a new kind of field: semiotics or textual theory. Matejka and Titunik have provided a new preface to discuss Volosinov in relation to the great resurgence of interest in all the writing of the circle of Mikhail Bakhtin.
Customer Reviews:
Language is the material of Consciousness.......2000-04-25
This book is a great classic in the study of language and its relation to ideology. The hollow debates about its authorship falls to the wayside when one considers how this work has revolutionized the study of ideological phenomena. Instead of looking at consciousness as a kind of vacuum to be filled by ideological content, it regards consciousness itself as a kind of substance composed of linguistic matter and riven from within its very core by social contradictions. The synoptic view of linguistics as a discipline divided between the romantic irrationalist approach of Vossler and the systemic semiological approach of Saussure is quite enlightening and original. Although the second part of this book is too difficult for non-linguists with no knowledge of Russian, one can perhaps make some headway into it if one has enough gumption.

Book Description
This book examines in detail the resource management problems and challenges posed by the intensification of the environmental change process in coastal areas around the globe. The analysis deployed is by and large buttressed by methods and techniques drawn from social science disciplines: economics, geography, and psychology. However, the overall approach adopted is multidisciplinary with additional contributions from the natural sciences and statistics. The key concept developed is that of ecosystem function value diversity and its management policy analogue, ecosystem integrity maintenance, and the consequent sustainable utilisation of coastal system assets. The functioning of healthy ecosystems generates a range of outputs which society values. The individual chapters analyse and evaluate a range of coastal and water resource functions across different temporal and spatial scales.

Book Description
This volume of the Encyclopaedia contains two contributions on closely related subjects: the theory of linear algebraic groups and invariant theory. The first part is written by T.A. Springer, a well-known expert in the first mentioned field. He presents a comprehensive survey, which contains numerous sketched proofs and he discusses the particular features of algebraic groups over special fields (finite, local, and global). The authors of part two, E.B. Vinberg and V.L. Popov, are among the most active researchers in invariant theory. The last 20 years have been a period of vigorous development in this field due to the influence of modern methods from algebraic geometry. The book will be very useful as a reference and research guide to graduate students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics.

Disquisitiones Arithmeticae
ASIN: 3540627790 |
Book Description
This book is a translation into English of Hilbert's "Theorie der algebraischen Zahlkörper" best known as the "Zahlbericht", first published in 1897, in which he provided an elegantly integrated overview of the development of algebraic number theory up to the end of the nineteenth century. The Zahlbericht provided also a firm foundation for further research in the subject. It is based on the work of the great number theorists of the nineteenth century. The Zahlbericht can be seen as the starting point of all twentieth century investigations in algebraic number theory, reciprocity laws and class field theory. For this English edition an Introduction has been added by F. Lemmermeyer and N. Schappacher.
