Excellent examples.......2007-09-19
This book gives practical, specific advice on improving your landscape painting technique. I especially like the illustrations. The paintings are beautiful and "fresh." Not your average landscapes. They inspired me.
shadows.......2007-09-10
Great book Good information but Kevin seems to lose his separation of the lights and shadows in some of his demos in the back of the book He talks about it but then shadows start getting to light in value and too much detail. This could be from the reproductions of his painting
Not as much "color and light" in this one........2007-08-11
Having read this author's previous book on putting color and light in your paintings, I was a little disappointed with this one---I expected more. The book was well organized, (had, once again, pages of stuff about selecting your brushes, etc.); the author set forth his view of a limited palette, and said that you needed to be excited about your painting---but I don't believe that he was excited when he wrote this. If he was, he didn't convey it well. Had a number of exercises, some reasonable, others only for the wealthy (use an entire tube of cadmium red light on your painting (That is, really thick!)
Anyway, having read through the book, I would not buy this book again --- that's the bottom line.
Wonderful instruction for the Plein-Air artist........2007-06-27
Kevin Macpherson gives thorough instructions in his book from colors used to composition. A beautiful book with many demonstrations. I would highly recommend to the beginning or advanced Plein-Air painter in oil.
A "Must Have" Resource.......2007-05-23
If you are an oil painter or even if you are a want-to-be painter, Kevin MacPherson's book is a terrific reference. Personally, I'm a Plein Air painter and Kevin is a master at painting on location. He covers what supplies you'll need and techniques in painting. I've had this book for some time and still refer to it often.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for techie but new to audio........2007-06-27
I just started to work with the technical group at Church and needed to come up to speed on audio systems. I'm an amateur radio operator (ham) so technical things didn't scare me but I just didn't know about the equipment or concepts.
This was a great book to show me what's out there, how it's controlled and what to look for.
I've realized the world is ratio's and this book did a great job showing how things are processed and reasons why they are that way. Great book to learn from and a fantastic book to double check others thoughts. (Yea, politics)
Best book I've seen so far on audio systems to date.
You will understand audio after reading this book........2005-06-27
Begin (and end) your quest for audio knowledge as it relates to a studio and modern recording with one book. It delivers what the title promises, an understanding of audio (even if you're not building a studio). I found UNDERSTANDING AUDIO an immensly practical and comprehensive volume explaining "everything you needed to know about audio", whether you're a layman, student or professional. From start to finish, the explanations of concepts, processes, and technical definitions were abundantly clear and free of unnecessary techno-babble. This is used as a text at Boston's Berklee College of Music, but don't let that scare you, rather embrace it. (especially since you won't have to pay the tuition fee) The writing is concise with well chosen words and the information is top notch stuff. Designed to give you a complete overview of the various and interactive components of "audio", it more than does so and in my opinion, better than any other comparable book on the market today at any price.
Awesome Guide!.......2005-04-05
Through friends I heard about Berklee Press' books and decided to check out a few titles at the local bookstore. I was very impressed and requested a catalog, and in the catalog I found Understanding Audio: Getting the Most Out of Your Project or Professional Recording Studio. Being a novice in the sound recording world, I decided to risk the $25 and buy the book. Let me tell you it was $25 well spent. This book explains, in a very understandable way, basic and advanced audio techniques. One thing I found most useful was it explained how putting a microphone at different angles produces a different type of sound. It also goes as far as showing the history of recording studios and their technology. This was a perfect book for me because it is not only a handbook for intermediate to advanced level sound engineers, but it also serves as a beginners guide to sound as well. The graphic examples are extremely accurate and helpful, and the in depth detail of every topic is excellent. This is a great book for anyone currently working or planning on working in the recording field.
Build a Better Sound.......2005-02-02
I recently embarked on the adventure of transforming my basement into a functioning recording studio. Shortly after beginning the process I realized I was way in over my head. However, after reading "Understanding Audio", all of my questions have been answered. After providing you with a basis for understanding how sound works, Thompson gives several suggestions and techniques for setting up your equipment for optimal sound quality. Project guidelines are given at the end of each chapter which help you apply the techniques discussed. I'm happy to say that my studio is nearly finished and I am thoroughly pleased with the sound quality it is producing. I definitely recommend this book to anyone thinking about building their own studio, or for anyone who is interested in learning more about the way sound works.

Customer Reviews:
The absolute, hands down, BEST pottery book on earth........2004-03-01
This is probably... no. ABSOLUTELY the best and most wonderfull book I have ever run across. Obstler does an amazing job of showing (and explaining) the true process of ceramics. This is not a technique or coffee table book although it is easily better at both categories than most books of that sort. This IS a book more about the materials of ceramics than the finished product. Mimi lovingly portrays the full cycle of the process which produces a pot. Something all true potters should know is that the actual end result, the pot, is the smallest and most insignificant part of ceramics. In this book, the reader is introduced to the whole life of the materials which we use. In a mish mash of history, formula, chemistry and geology, Mimi Obstler creates a unique and awe-inspiring story not just of the pot or potter, but of the earth from which both are born.
This book is beautifully crafted, and you can tell, that a lot of love, work and knowledge have gone into it's creation. This is a must have for anyone who truly loves pottery OR geology. I have never seen a book this amazing before. I highly recomend it. This book is worth every cent and so much more. I can honestly say that I am stunned. Thank you Mimi Obstler, this is a treasure.
A necessary book for any serious potter........2000-04-21
"Out of the Earth Into the Fire" is a necessary book for any potter , and is especially useful for any potter doing their own glazes. It details in it's four chapters, although very long and comprehensive chapters, all of the glaze and clay making ingredients that you will need. The first chapter deals with the glaze cores. It talks of both the historical and the emperical aspects of all the necessary substances in use. A substance that I can't wait to get my hands on is Rotton Stone. I'll let you read the book to find out why. The second chapter is about clays and clay bodies.Although most of us buy prepared clay this gives us reason to make our own. The next chapter concerns auxillary melters. We find here about glaze surfaces; how to best utilize a substance to make a glossy, a matt, or an opaque surface. Finally the last chapter reveals all we want to know about silica and alumina. The appendices are full of useful material. There are even some good pictures in this book. An unexpected surprise.

A fine technical overview programmers will relish........2006-11-05
Jamil Azher's GLOBAL OUTSOURCING WITH MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO 2005 TEAM SYSTEM tells how to manage outsourced projects using Visual Studio 2005, which engages developers, project managers and team leads alike. GLOBAL OUTSOURCING takes it examples from the real world also: it examines typical outsource management issues, applications, and problem-solving in a fine technical overview programmers will relish.
Excellent Book.......2006-08-30
Global Outsourcing with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System is an excellent book and informational resource. The format is easy to follow, intuitive, and simplifies gaining an understanding of both the concept of global outsourcing as well as the software.
A Software Assist to Communications........2006-08-23
This book is indeed about global outsourcing, but it deals with the outsourcing of software not athletic shoes or kitchen ware. Specifically, as you might guess from the title, it concentrates on the use of Microsoft's Team System version of Visual Studio 2005. Other Microsoft products such as Project and Excel from the Office suite are also shown as a part of an integrated management system.
There is little question tht outsourcing is here to stay. The cost savings are simply to great to be ignored. A programmer with a few years of experience in the US is paid an average of $55K, in India $15K, and in China $9K.
There is also no question that outsourcing brings its own problems in terms of management, control and especially communications. Many of these problems are specifically discussed in the book, and it goes on to show that the Microsoft tools can assist in these areas. The tools will not, of course, guarantee success but they may help to make a project a success.
Book Description
Barbour Publishing was first to bring inspirational manga to the masses-and now tween and teen girls have another great read in Serenity, Volume 2: Stepping Out. The lonely teen with the blue hair is slowly warming up to the Christian kids who've made her their "project". . .but when Serenity wrecks Kimberly's car and refuses to take responsibility, the prayer club decides some "tough love" is in order. Can Serenity understand that their actions are really for her own good? This full-color graphic novel features a compelling storyline, realistic dialogue, and a solid biblical message for today's reader.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Christian Manga.......2006-04-28
Serenity is a rebellious high-schooler who somehow always finds herself in the midst of some kind of trouble. She's angry, has a horrible attitude, & is the antithesis of the teen most parents would want their child to befriend. That is, until a local church youth group, who's members attend the same high school as Serenity, decide to make her their "project".
Finally!!! Some manga I feel comfortable giving my step-daughter, 13. She really got into the Yuyu Hakusho books, to which she was introduced by a friend. Neither my husband or myself ever really approved of the Yuyu Hakusho books, but she loved the artwork. When I saw these, I snatched them up. I read through the first one & greatly appreciated the ideas & morals presented. We gave step-daughter the first book in this series for Christmas, & she loves it! She bought the third book at Borders, but couldn't find the second one. (She's getting that for her birthday.)
The one (possible) drawback is that these books read from front to back, like most western books, instead of back to front, like many Japanime books. I mention it simply b/c step-daughter drew it to my attention.
If you've got a teen or pre-teen who loves manga but would prefer they actual read something of substance, this is the series for which you've been waiting. All the flashy artwork with none of the occultic overtones or mystical storylines. Most teens can relate to the stories presented, especially if they attend public school. Step-daughter is eagerly awaiting more releases.
It gets even better........2006-01-18
An excellent second book in the "Serenity" series!
Be aware that there are serious issues in this book that deal with addiction. This isn't just a fluffy comic, but one that deals with real issues and problems that need to be addressed with tweens/teens.
Yes, the coloring is beautiful, yes there are some great jokes, but at the same time it does follow a storyline about drug and alcohol abuse. It's a serious topic that when written in this manner can be used as a discussion tool.
Additionally, it stresses the concept of personal responsibility- --but with a few laughs along the way.
Great book, it just keeps getting better!

An Insult to Disney Fans.......2001-03-19
This should have been titled "Universal Studios Like a Pro" (in fact, the later edition is "Orlando Like a Pro"). The author spends most of the book pointing out how much more he likes Universal Studios over Disney World. Not only are his tips about Disney World useless, but many of his 'facts' are dead wrong (for example,'like a pro' he tells his readers that the stretching room in the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World doesn't use elevators, which it does. He erroneously calls the Enchanted Tiki Room attraction "Tropical Serenade", etc). An insult to Disney fans and a poor guide book. Thumbs down to Foder's for not checking his 'facts' for accuracy.
An insider's guide to the world's most overwhelming resort........1997-07-07
On a recent peak summer season visit to Orlando's overwhelming and expensive collection of theme parks and tourist traps, we found this book of tips, secrets and hints by an Orlando native to be useful, though not always applicable. Some advice was dead-on perfect (parking secrets & ponchos), other hints were intermittently so (how to avoid long-lines - sorry Rick, even at 11pm, Space Mountain was nearly an hour in the left hand line), and still others nearly useless (discount or free tickets demand strong sales resistance).
The individual ride attraction reviews alone were far more honest and informative than the brief discriptions in the official guide maps. Worth the price of the book alone, we referred to them often throughout our visit - especially when trying to decide if the wait for Back to the Future was worth it (it was).
AMAZINGLY AWFUL ADVICE.......1997-07-02
is all that you will find in this book! This guy advises you to get your tickets by listening to time share pitches! Not only is that time consuming, it's unethical! Unless you want some good laughs, DO NOT buy this book

Male Perfection .......2005-08-16
Like its companion piece, IN THE STUDIO, Tom Bianchi's photography takes the male image to new heights. Highly erotic in nature, there is NO self-consciousness on the part of the models. Rather, they seem to be having a genuinely good time as they work with Bianchi. ANOTHER MASTERPIECE.
IDEALIZED GAY MALE FORM.......2002-12-15
Anyone who loves the male form will love Bianchi's Out of the Studio. This photographer is not erotic, romantic, nor pornographic. Rather he is narcissistic in the best classical Greek tradition. To admire perfectly developed male bodies, and perhaps draw them, this is the book to buy. But after awhile these beauties become much like Lil' Abner and the other beautiful men of Dogpatch, USA-- too self absorbed.
Self-Loving Erotic Photography.......2000-06-11
I was given this book by a friend thinking I would be titalated by the photographs. While the men pictured are photographed well for the most part (and are quite attractive), I was disturbed by how Mr. Bianchi photographs himself and appears to be having sex with a model in one of the images. It leads me to believe there is more happening here than just a love of photography. And since Mr. Bianchi has acknowledged publicly that he is HIV +, I wonder what these sexual encounters say to the public. The quality of the photographs are great, though. :)

Art Behind the Scenes: One Hundred Masters In and Out of Their Studios is an invigorating introduction to one hundred artists of the last five centuries. Brief discussions of their work, their place in art history and a peek into their private lives makes this a fascinating book.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully written work!.......2005-03-07
It's always a challenge to write about art, particular when exploring the grand masters across history. People have their own perceptions of good, bad, moving, and amazing - this is an area of high subjectivity. With that said, Ms. Altabe met this challenge with grace, style, and wit. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book, and was pleasantly surprised to find how outstanding it is. One hundred artists - including those we have all heard of and some lesser-knowns - are explored in this work, including histories, little-known facts about particular works, and descriptions of style. Ms. Altabe's obvious knowledge and passion for the subject lends her work great credibility, all written in an approachable manner. What a delightful read for those that are novices to the art world and lifelong experts!
Quality Survey of Art History for both Beginner and Scholar.......2004-11-29
Joan B. Altabe, art critic and art teacher, has written that little book about art history we've all been waiting for. In one succinct volume, Altabe manages to cover Western art from the 14th to the 20th Century in a manner that is immediately accessible to all readers yet with enough added information that scholars of art history will find some enlightenment also! No simple feat, this, as those who have consistently tried to digest the sociopolitical timeline with concomitant visual artists of each era. What Altabe has produced is a key to the door of understanding how art of the Now came to be, and in the process she has painted in words some dazzlingly fine images!
The book is divided into chapters designated as follows:
1 - 14th, 15th Century: Renaissance - "Rather than heavenly harmony, the earthly variety became the lesson of the day....[artists] paid attention to the way people looked and felt." (da Vinci, Ucello, Fra Filippo Lippi, Mantegna, Raphael, Michelangelo)
2 - 16th Century: Mannerism - "Mannerists wanted their art to stand for the human condition of struggle and conflict, not perfect perspective and ideal proportions." (Botticelli, Corregio, Pontormo, Romano)
3 - 17th Century: Baroque - "Baroque artists piled on the emotion, heightening it, and making it more melodramatic. They took stagy lighting and theatrical gestures to the extreme." (Carravaggio, Rubens, Ribera, Velasquez, Rembrandt)
4 - 18th Century: Rococo - "Artists...weary of the Baroque style and its heavy, histrionic dramas, sought a less weighty look...fun and frivolity al fresco." (Watteau, Tiepolo, Hogarth, Chardin)
5 - 18th Century: Neo-Classicism - "...the end of frivolity and a return to order, simplicity, even austerity" ...accompanying the age of revolution. (Sir Joshua Reynolds, Gainsborough, David, Ingres)
6 - 19th Century: Impressionism - "artists...sought to liberate the French art by getting out of their studios and painting in the great outdoors...vivid strokes of color side by side...made Impressionist works appear more alive." (Pissarro, Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir)
7 - 19th Century: Post-Impressionism - "imitation of nature is not the aim of painting...an artist's job is [not] to copy nature, but rather to evoke it, and make one feel it." (Cezanne, Gauguin, van Gogh, Seurat, Matisse)
8 - 19th - 20th Centuries; Expressionism - The unseen world and the way artists feel about what they see is Expressionism's disinguishing characteristic." (Klimt, Munch, Nolde, Schiele, Kokoscha, Kahlo, Bacon)
9 - 20th Century: Surrealism - "freed images from their ususal association by placing the disparate side-by-side...flouting of logic created by a new reality." (Rousseau, Ernst, de Chirico, Chagall, Magritte, Dali)
10 - 20th Century: Abstract Art - "aims to reflect that part of life beyond the observable, but which is no less real: the underworld of feeling." (Kandinsky, Hofmann, Rothko, Malevich)
Altabe's method is to briefly describe an era, then gives examples of artists of the time, discussing a bit of each artist's output coupled with Behind the Scenes quotes from historians such as Vasari et al and notes form the artists themselves which enhance the human aspect of each artist discussed. This survey covers 100 artists and every reader will question some inclusions and some exclusions: that is of little concern to Altabe. Her mission is clear - write about art history in a manner easily understandable, focusing on cogent facts, offering just enough subjective stance to make the information lively and propulsive.
If there is one aspect that would make this very fine book even better, it would be to offer more visuals of the works Altabe describes in words so well. But then the book might sink in weight into the same category as those magnificent massive tomes and monographs that are more used as pictorial reference and entertainment than in learning.
Altabe has given us what we all have been waiting for - a small book that makes the exploration of art and its place in history available on every level. This is a must-have book for students, collectors, historians, writers, critics, and for those who yearn for more understanding of the genius of making art!
