Boring,Boring,Boring and Totally Uninspiring!.......2007-09-23
This was the first book on intercessory prayer that I "tried"(unsuccessfully) to read. It was so boring and unmoving that I searched here at Amazon for others on this subject and came across Ronald Dunn's and was able to "look inside". As soon as I read the table of contents I knew this was the book for me,and I ordered it on the spot, and have not regretted that. So much more understandable and seemingly heartfelt, it touched my heart, where this book left me completely numb!
I would not recommend this to anyone, and would instead heartily recommend "Don't Just Stand There,Pray Something:The Incredible Power Of Intercessory Prayer" by Ronald Dunn. Which encourages you to begin your work immediately as a prayer warrior,if that is what is on your heart, and if that is the case this book really fires up your zeal for it. I'm so happy that the Dutch Sheet's book was from the library and I had not wasted any money for it!
Very good book. Better than Yancy's effort........2007-04-20
Better and more practical than Phillip Yancy's book on prayer. This book offers solid advice on how to pray and the importance of persistence.
Fabulous Find.......2007-01-19
This book is a great tool for study and understanding on the topic of prayer. Dutch Sheets presents prayer concepts in an amazing and insightful way, which has truly had an impact on my prayer life. He has ideas and thought provoking beliefs that I had never heard before and after reading this book, I have bougth multiple copies as gifts for others.
Best book on prayer ever written!.......2007-01-18
I have read many books on prayer and none have impacted my prayer life as much as this one. It gives you a new attitude towards the importance of prayer, and it gives you practical examples of how to transform your prayer life. It explains the authority every believer has in Christ and teaches how to walk in that authority. Very motivating!!
Absolutely worth reading!.......2007-01-11
This book has taught me why I have to pray and more importantly:
inspired me to pray more!It also gave me a new understanding of my authority as praying child of God.

Once you have witnessed the dark, sensational visions of Joel-Peter Witkin, you will never be the same again. Witkin gets to you. Here you will encounter hermaphrodites, malformed bodies, Siamese twins, corpses, fetuses, cut-off heads, and self-torturers. Witkin's compositions go far beyond conventional "freak show" tableaux to achieve a sinister and dignified beauty, and he includes numerous art-historical references that add context and acerbic wit. This exquisitely produced collection of black-and-white photographs will take you, as Guy Blaisdell writes in an essay at the end of the book, into "a human afterworld ... one that comes before or after the death of this world--a place where the spirits of the dead live on by sitting as works of art for their portraits, descending into our moment and returning always to their identical selves." Warning: Not for those under 18 and/or easily disturbed.

Gods of Heaven and Earth.......1999-12-24
If one were to draw an imaginary line through the last two hundred years, starting with Goya and the Disasters of War, perhaps pausing briefly with Daumier and then moving resolutely to the trenches of the first world war, some of the lithographs of George Bellows, Otto Dix and Grosz. And if that imaginary line were to pick up the expressionist thread again in Mexico, most particularly with Orozco and Jose Luis Cuevas then I think that Witkin, rather than a shocking purveyor of disturbing images can be seen as the latest -and one of the finest- inheritors of a very solid and well-grounded strand in the history of Western Art.
Sometimes he is even very funny, as when, very conscious of academic art, he mimics Velasquez and Ingres, but then Goya could be very funny, too. Usually however Witkin is about as funny as Goya's impalements or as the trench war lithographs of Otto Dix.
Definitely not a book for the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything crowd" If you like your expressionism with a bite, this is great stuff. If you prefer tame, decorative expressionism there's always Maurice Sendak.
photography from the underside.......1997-04-18
o pushing the role of the photographer as one who photographs the poor, the odd, the strange, the perverse, the sexual underworld in the tradition of Weegee, Arbus, etc.
o pushing the adaptation of famous works of art in the past into modern pieces.
o and if you can't stomach what you find, you should at least be able to appreciate the quality of the photo-manipulation.
o one image from this book seems to have been used in the movie Jacob's Ladder.
Dark and totally twisted photos of abberations of nature..........1996-12-13
Joel Peter Witkin's images are what nightmares are made of...a cast of freaks, standing up...looking through you. We are here, don't pity or humiliate us...we are not nightmares...we are all creatures of heaven and earth
Book Description
Drawing heavily on the story of Scripture without minimizing the tension between this world and the world to come, this book persuasively explains how our next life actually supplies deep significance for the life we enjoy now encouraging us to celebrate creation, hone our humanity, and extend the grace of redemption to every corner of our existence.

Worldview Reformation.......2004-07-02
In a culture which produces thousands of books on the subject of worldview this one stands alone. This book should be taught in churches all around America.
Greatly Needed Book.......2004-05-12
Dr. Wittmer's book was a wonderful read. Not only was he witty (I found myself chuckling and reading out loud to my wife), but he delves into some deep philosophical and theological waters without confusing the reader. Dr. Wittmer understands these complex issues so well he is able to bring these down to a very understandable level for the average person. I have taught Worldview classes to both college and high school students and have struggled to find a text that introduces these complex topics in a creative and clear way. In Heaven is a Place on Earth, I have now found the best text I have seen for introducing people to the relevant topics of Christian Worldview.
Dr. Wittmer discusses why humans exist, where we are going to end up, and how we get there following the Creation, Fall, Redemption model of Scripture. He steers the reader away from the current gnostic cult in our contemporary culture which implies that anything physical is bad (and so we must baptize articles with Christian symbols) and that a Christian's goal is to leave this earth (see Revelation 21). Instead, he remains faithful to the biblical texts and demonstrates how God truly is Immanuel (God with us).
All in all, I believe this book is a necessity for anyone wanting to form a balanced and informed Christian Worldview.
A Sane Corrective for Christians Living in the World.......2004-05-03
Dr. Wittmer does modern Christians a great service in Heaven is a Place on Earth. Too long our view of how we should engage in the world has been skewed by non-biblical concepts and paradigms. His balanced approach to living in the world (and enjoying it!) is a welcome relief from years of confusion caused by well-meaning but misguided pastors and authors. His wit and voice make this book a joy to read and the notes, discussion questions, and case studies in the back make it a perfect text for small groups, Sunday school, and personal enrichment.
Many thanks to Dr. Wittmer who encourages all of us to enjoy life, creation, and other people in the way that God intends for them to be enjoyed. (I always suspected that God might want us to be happy.) A liberating and positive text that deserved heavier cover stock from the publisher. Highly recommended!
Book Description
In refreshingly unconventional prose, rising theologian Wendy Farley has written a theological account of the human condition that delves into the deepest dimensions of the soul. Considering human life from the perspective of the wounding and healing of desire, with desire being that within us which longs for connection, home, and beauty, Farley presents a passionate, moving account of the human condition that draws strongly upon the Christian meditative and mystical spiritual traditions. Using the medieval mystic Mechthild of Madgeburg as her guide, Farley shifts the traditional images of sin and redemption into images of healing and power. The result is a theological memoir that reaches into the human depths and draws forth a response of the soulin courage, compassion, and delight.

Redemption of Desire .......2006-10-03
Compellingly written, book offers precious and incisive wisdom about the transformative experiences that accompany our discovery of the nature of the enduring desires that bring us into greater intimacy with our souls, selves, lives, those of others, and perhaps even the loving divine that made us thus. Offering insights from experiences all too famiiar to those willing to face the most vulnerable truths about our human existence -- Farley offers a description of reality that is neither easily dismissed or embraced. Human nature is neither despised, nor demonized; neither romanticized nor justified. But for those aching for the grace of a kairos moment, reading the wisdom (her sources spanning the spectrum from Julian of Norwich to Apalachian folk music to the mothers' of tortured children in South America, to the irritating donkey in Shrek) offered in this latest of WF's works will be akin to finding an oasis. There is something profoundly empowering, even vindicating, about learning that the very vulnerabilities that can destin us to struggle and suffer (even so unbearably) in body, mind, and soul, nevertheless also mediate for us such incredible blessedess -- known best through struggling to contemplate Holy Love. It is not possible to lay down her work without having grown tremendously aware of the beauty of being human -- and perhaps not a little weepy with gratitude.

Customer Reviews:
Not So Heavenly.......2002-09-17
'Releasing Heaven on Earth' by Alistair Petrie has been lauded in evangelical and charismatic circles as God's message for the Church today. However I feel Alistair Petrie's book contains extra-biblical teaching (such as ley lines which are supposedly "conduits through which spiritual power is transmitted for spiritual authority and which provide `feeding troughs' from which an infrastructure of the demonic can nourish itself and be granted authority in any given area; the use of consecrated salt as "a prophetic act on a symbolic basis that has an effect in the spiritual realm", identificational repentance which is required to atone for the consequences of generational sin that can influence the person and his life and his nation, Holy Communion to cleanse the land, etc..) I also noted the misuse of Scripture in the book. What is perhaps most troubling is that the focus is on man (his intercession, prayer, cleansing of the land, repentance, obedience, etc to bring victory over sin) and not on what Christ has accomplished on the cross. I feel the author's teaching robs the Lord of glory and distorts the gospel.
What was very surprising to me were the endorsements from well-known leaders concerning the content of this book. Though no theologian myself, I cannot in good conscience recommend this book because of the errors I believe it contains.
"heaven" is not our home.......2001-09-07
Finally evangelicals that are taking salvation to include all of creation! The whole premise of the book is that the creation (land) is included in redemption, not only in theory but in practice. He presents a theology that demands Christians to reclaim the creation actively through spiritual warfare. He attacks the western worldview that delineates salvation to "human souls" and instead shows how the Bible develops a theology of the land and then the salvation of the land. And when we claim the land back from its history of defilement and proclaim Jesus as its king, that even the people turn to follow Him.
The only major weakness that I see is Petrie's underdeveloped category of Idolatry. Either because Petrie hasn't considered, or as not to be offensive to typical Christians, he applauds groups like Greenpeace's efforts to recognize the prophetic voice of a groaning creation (good thing), he too quickly identifies idolatry as primarily the "worship of nature" while failing to recognize idolatry as the worship of the works of our own hands as well, if not almost exclusivly today- technology, science, economics, etc. This point should be developed further. He also sees and places emphasis on old covenants directly made with the "spirit" world while failing to recognize social contract with the works of our own hands as a foothold for the adversary to rule with us and enslave us and the creation.
But really, "Releasing" is a huge step forward. A must read for those of us concerned with reclaiming the creation for the true King. When I opened the book I was overwhelmed with the gravity and timing involved. Petrie has begun to build the bridge between intellectual evangelicals and the more popular spiritual warefare movement.
Let Your Kingdom Come On Earth, Lord!.......2001-02-10
Let your Kingdom come on Earth - As it is in Heaven, Lord! If your prayer is 2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people would humble themselves and pray...and I will HEAL THEIR LAND", then this book is a must read!!! What DOES healing the land encompass? Does the land mourn over sin? What are the blessings that come to the land when it is healed? Alistair has done a great job teaching on this and I recommend buying several copies of this book to share with others. God truly does want to bring restoration to the people AND the land!A++++++~~~~~

Book Description
In a previous life, Herman “Hank” Fins-Winston had been a golf pro—an excellent teacher of the game who never quite made it on the circuit, having missed his one real shot at greatness. He now lives in a lovely condominium on the thirteenth fairway of one of heaven’s 8,187 golf courses. God and His closest companions, you see, play the game often. And though Jesus never bothers to keep score, Buddha never takes a practice swing, and Moses doesn’t consider it cheating when he parts the courses’ water hazards, they all take the sport very seriously. In heaven, even God replaces His divots.
Hank’s afterlife takes an unexpected turn when he is summoned to help a player whose game is in a slump. To his dismay, his new pupil is God Himself. Or Herself. Depending on the day. As they play the most heavenly courses in paradise and back on earth, Hank realizes that it’s he who’s learning the lessons—about fearing failure, about second chances, about the connectedness of all living things, about not taking the next breath for granted, and about our God-given ability to improve ourselves—one stroke at a time.

golfing with god.......2007-09-24
A quasi-philosophical book, the message of which we have all heard before. The best parts were the descriptions of the golf matches. Mr Merullo's conception of Bhuddism sounds good, but are not up to the facts. Go to Bhutan and see the Bhuddist fortresses, and one will see even the Bhuddists war and plunder.
Another look.......2007-08-12
A compelling story, well written and interesting.
Not necessarily for a person who is reluctant to
question their belief systems.
Golfing with God.......2007-03-26
This is the best book I've ever read, and I've given copies to all my closest friends. It is appealing to those who are outwardly religious and those who aren't. I read it periodically and love it more with every reading.
A good read lacking a little substance.......2006-08-14
Everything was great about the product itself, but there was not as much substance to the story as I thought there would be. It was a good story, but I just thought it would go further in depth.
Golfers will love it, others probably not so much.......2006-02-06
Herman Fins-Winston, or Hank, as he prefers to be called, was a professional golfer in his previous life. A young, talented golfer with a bright future until one day, at the Western Pennsylvania Open, he missed a gimme putt, and he fell apart completely. Hank fell off the tour and became an extremely successful golf instructor, but he was always deeply unhappy and disappointed in himself. In heaven, Hank lives in a condominium on the El Rancho Obispo country club. One day, he gets an offer he can't refuse: help out God on His (or Her) golf game. Hank plays a few rounds in Heaven, a couple with God, one with Buddha, and one with Jesus, Mary, and Moses. In the second part of the book, Hank and God go down to earth to go on an ultimate golfer's vacation, including rounds at Augusta and Greenbrier.
During this trip to earth, Hank realizes that he is not the one doing the teaching; he is the student. Throughout all the rounds of golf played, God is grooming Hank to overcome all of his earthly desires and become a "great champion."
Golfing With God is a very entertaining novel, and a real page-turner. While the overarching spirituality of the tale is a little convoluted, Roland Merullo does an amazing job of interlocking spiritual meaning with the game of golf. Many golfers believe golf is tied into your inner spirit, but Merullo takes it literally in this novel. God, who appears as a young, beautiful woman for most of the novel, is a very complex character. Merullo does an admirable job of trying to make God's infinite love and forgiveness apparent and vivid throughout the novel.
Part One of the novel, which takes place entirely in heaven, is the stronger part of the novel. It is much simpler in its exploration of Hank's spirit than the second part, in which Hank is forced to figure out the meaning of his previous life, and all the ones before it. My favorite part of the book was when Hank plays a match with, that's right, the prince of darkness, himself. What could have been really corny is written very well, and has a deep meaning that is tough to completely understand until the end of the novel.
If you love golf, and believe in God, obviously, you will love this book.

Renowned landscape photographer Ric Ergenbright here turns his attention to the holiness reflected in the beauty of the natural world. Combining scriptural passages with photographic and scientific observations relating to the elements of nature, Ergenbright uses his dramatic, often astonishing photographs as a testament to the power and perfection of God. Though he recognizes that "if all Scripture were lost, we could still know something of [God's] character by carefully studying the works of his hands," Ergenbright uses the book to emphasize how God's Word can illuminate the world around us. This beautiful coffee-table book is a wonderful addition to any nature-lover's collection, and the detailed notes throughout are an education to any aspiring photographer.

A Praise Trip.......2007-09-03
We often do praise trips to places of special beauty, where we sing songs of praise and worship to the Creator, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!
We go to the Grand Canyon, one example, but also to the lakes and other canyons in Arizona. I have often been to Oregon and experienced the beauty of the water falls and to Colorado to enjoy the Rocky Mountains.
This book is a praise trip for the reader, each page is an experience of worship. How great is our God, who created such magnificent beauty for us to enjoy. How blessed I was to receive this book as a gift and I immediately bought copies for my family. May many enjoy the beauty of God's creation. We are to fill our hearts and minds with praise and this is a wonderful way to start!
Full of His Glory..........2006-11-16
The most visually beautiful book I know of, THE ART OF GOD is in appearance a nature photography book of the most glorious sort, but upon closer look it is so much more. Ergenbright pairs brilliant awe-inspiring photography with artfully presented text and scripture verses that precisely match each photo and combine to make the heart leap, the soul rejoice. Though written in the spirit of worship, whether intended or not, the beauty, range, selection, and presentation of the book end up also being an apologetic making a visual case for a Creator that's both an intelligent and artistic designer. The photos are arranged purposefully, with the story flowing seamlessly thru the categories Elements, Design, Environments, and Ebb & Flow. The adjective "stunning" often's used to mean just really beautiful, but with this book it's beauty really does stun or take a bit of breath away. THE ART OF GOD is wonderful for a gift or to put on one's own coffee table for visitors to enjoy. Truly an aesthetic and spiritual masterpiece (and a bargain too).
Modern Paradise.......2006-05-06
Eden may be lost, but Ergenbright's insightful eye for beauty proves that much of paradise is still to be found. Amazingly beautiful nature photographs of every element can be found in this book: skies, bodies of water, cliffs, and even lava flows present the viewer with beauty that only a Supreme God could create. Ergenbright's modest introduction in the beginning of the book and his Biblical passages leave no doubt in regards to his devotion to God as the true artist here, but Ergenbright's own artistic talents certainly cannot be overlooked! I'm a huge lover of beautiful art and Ergenbright's uplifting Christian messages greatly added to the peacefulness of his breathtaking images, luring me into a state of blissful lethargy. This book is truly a wonderful testament of nature's beauty and I recommend it even if you are not a Christian; everyone can appreciate the beauty here, no matter what faith they are.
Finding the Sacred in Earth, Wind & Fire.......2006-04-28
Former agnostic and nature photographer Ric Ergenbright spreads before us a stunning visual feast of God's glory, as reflected in creation. Travel through gorgeous views of air, water, fire, forests, stones, and more. Not just a coffee table book, The Art of God provides a theology of creation as part of a two-fold design (the second part being the story of Christ played out through history). We can even learn about the complexity of creation, as in Ergenbright's discussion of how freshwater rain needs undrinkable seawater to send it on its journey.
2nd BEST book EVER.......2003-06-14
The Art of God by ric Ergenbgight is my most favorite book after the Bible. Even people who do not know Jesus can appreciate the beauty found in this book through the outstanding nature scenes that were photographed all over the world. Mr. Ergenbright is truly gifted by God to bring to life in paper form all of these magnificent places.

Extraordinary and Diverse Collection.......2007-02-10
I've been a fan of Ken Gire's artful and anointed writing for several years. However, upon opening this book, and realizing that it consisted largely, not of Gire's own words, but quotes and writings related to the subject of prayer...I was for a moment indecisive about whether or not to continue. I decided to trust the author and begin. And rather than it feeling like one entry after another in a huge devotional tome, the words began to jump off the page. Gire has collected writings and prayers from every continent, from writers, scholars, scientists, non-Christians and Christians alike, famous historical figures and the Bible itself (to name a few). The fact that these are arranged by themes is almost irrelevant to the sheer power of the words laid out on these pages. I already knew that Gire was a well-read individual himself because, in the very 1st book of his that I read, he introduced me to the genius of Frederick Buechner..now one of my favorite authors. But the sheer scope of the writings he has chosen for this book took my breath away. I felt as I was reading that I was discovering and uncovering some truly anointed stories/words of wisdom that I might never have encountered in my lifetime had it not been for this book. I had immediate favorites as I went through the book, but it became obvious to me that this is a volume that I will pick up again and again throughout my life. An amazing, amazing work and one that obviously is built on the rich and varied studies of this author. Ken Gire's life and love for the truth are displayed here on these pages in a most remarkable way.
THE BEST PRAYER COLLECTION EVER WRITTEN!!.......2005-04-30
I consider this book one of my favorite books about prayer and the necessity which drives men and women to God. Ken Gire presents a solid, user-friendly reference to some of the greatest quotes ever written or spoken by famous personalities such as C.S. Lewis, Abraham Heschel, and St. Francis of Assisi. This has to be one of the most beautiful books ever written or compiled on the subject of prayer! A classic in every sense of the word-it leaves me speechless each time I read it.
A constant companion for daily devotions!.......1999-02-13
This book has provided me with inspirational messages, prayers for times when nothing seem appropriate, prayers to share, and prayers to reflect upon.
Exhaustive prayer compilation well worth the money.......1998-12-28
Gire searches extensively to bring the reader the best tidbits of insight from the brightest Christian authors throughout the centuries. He has done the work that many of us wish we could do, if we only had the time. . .
