Book Description
Biblical interpretation for both beginning and experienced Bible readers. Changes to the new third edition include: updated language, new foreword, improved diagrams, substantial rewriting of several chapters to make them more user-friendly, and updated list of recommended commentaries and resources.
Download Description
The primary task of Bible study is to determine what the Scriptures meant at the time they were written and how that meaning applies to us today. This vital guide focuses on the historical contexts of the Bible and explains differences between the Old Testament narratives, the Epistles, Gospels, Parables, Psalms and more. It's a practical approach to Bible study -- one that makes good sense and is easy to understand. This new edition includes, among other changes, a new section on the Song of Songs and an updated list of recommended commentaries and resources.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-09-22
For some reason, I resisted reading this book for years. Now, I wish I'd read it five years ago because it is so full of helpful information.
The authors first give basic principles for interpreting scripture and then go on to apply those principles to the different genres of the Bible - epistles, historical narrative, prophetic literature, poetry, wisdom literature, etc. They also give sound principles for dealing with the more controversial issues of scripture with great balance and wisdom. The chapter on the book of Revelation alone is worth the purchase price.
The book also contains a fine appendix listing recommended commentaries for each book of the Bible. They also explain how to choose a good commentary and how to use the commentary once you've chosen it.
In short, this is a wonderful book. I don't think I agree with everything they say, but they have graciously given permission to have disagreement on these things. In fact, I believe they actually model for the Christian community how to have dignified and loving disagreements (which they seem to have with each other on a couple of points) on matters that are not central to the faith, but still important. Their love and respect for scripture shines through every page, as does their humility in approaching it.
For King James Only Readers..........2007-09-08
If you are like that last reviewer who only reads the King James Version and relies solely on the Holy Spirit for illumination...
I wot what thou dost wist.
(If you can read the preceeding sentence, then the KJV is the Bible for you!) The Reformers practiced the same basic methods of Bible study that Fee is teaching in this book. The Reformers--Luther, Calvin, etc.--made themselves familiar with ancient culture and language as well as with the opinions of godly commentators before them. When the Reformation came to England the Bible Christians used was the Geneva Bible of 1599. It was the dominant Bible of English Protestants for many decades AFTER the KJV was published in 1611.
Useless.......2007-09-04
I can tell you how to read the bible for all it's worth in two easy steps.
1) Get a King James Bible, the only preserved Word of God.
2) Pray as you read it. Christ is the Word (John 1:1). The Holy Spirit will enlighten you as you study it. If there are words you don't understand they are all in any common dictionary.
Helpful, Insightful Guidelines for Bible Study.......2007-08-15
How to Read the Bible for All its Worth is an excellent introduction to reading and interpreting the Bible. It looks at the overall big picture of Biblical relevancy and history, as well as significance for today.
The authors offer several guidelines like reading the Bible in its historical context for its initial audience and how to read it according to its form and purpose. Then, how to interpret it for today.
They provide chapters on the various parts of the Bible like the historical narratives, prophets, psalms, gospels, letters and Revelation and discuss how to interpret these portions of the Bible in their unique formats.
I think the authors show readers how to deal with the Bible in an academic setting but may esteem their own insights and opinions too much. They somewhat discount the Holy Spirits ministry in applying the word to individuals as they read the Bible. They preclude the Holy Spirit from using scripture to speak to an individual in a way that may be unique or different from the authors' exegesis and hermeneutics.
Overall, they do steer readers in the right direction regarding Bible study.
If I could recommend just one book, this would be it........2007-04-13
I wish that I had read, "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" twenty years ago. Besides the Bible, this might be the most useful book that you will ever read in your Christian walk.
The authors - one a New Testament scholar and one an Old Testament scholar - both of which have written some very good commentaries previously, break down the the task of making the best use of your Bible study time. While both authors have great insight, they make their points in a very clear, easy to understand way. They show the importance of context (historical and literary), the different types of writing in Scripture and how to approach them, and other practical tips on how to get the most out of your Bible reading time. They even give some pointers on what to look for when selecting a Bible translation. Though I disagree with their conclusions about the TNIV (I'm a NASB man myself) the translation information was still worth reading.
In summary, I wish I could give this book six stars. Despite having read the Bible daily for over twenty years, there were a lot of things that hadn't really occured to me until I read this fine book. The authors give a lot of real world insight on how to get the most out of reading the Bible. In the end, isn't that something that we all want? I liked it so much that I passed on my copy to a friend.
Book Description
Helps people read the Bible as a whole; and even when the whole is narrowed to whole books, helps readers to see how each book fits into the grand Story of the Bible.
Customer Reviews:
Good start for serious bible study.......2007-08-08
This is one of the first books recommended by my pastors after I accept Christ in September 2005.
Due to the fact that I want to build a good foundation of proper bible study methods, this book serve as a good foundation for myself. Other than these, I use it in conjunction with Elements of Biblical Exegesis by Michael J. Gorman, Biblical Interpretation: An Integrated Approach, Revised Edition by W. Randolph Tate, and Hermeneutic Spiral by Grant Osborne.
It lay out the basic elements of genre analysis and how each book should be read in its own term. he book can be further complemented by Hermeneutic Spiral where you are further introduced other concepts of biblical exegesis and study.
It is a good investment and you will not regret it.
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-13
I think this book is one of the best resource books I have every had. I use it everyday as I do my daily Bible reading. It helps you understand what to look for as you read the Bible. I recommended this book to others and have purchased 7 more to distribute to friends.
Very good reference book.......2006-11-10
This book is very useful for the average person wanting to dig a little deeper into the Word!
Why How to Read the Bible Book by Book is a must for students of the Bible.......2006-03-15
I believe that How to Read the Bible Book by Book is a must read for students of the Bible because it guides you through the Bible in simple and kind manner. It will make you want to read the Bible in a fresh and new way. I have been studying the Bible formally for over forty years now and I beleive that any book that will help enhance ones study of the Bible is a must read.
I would highly recommend this book for your reading.
Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart have done an excellent job in opening the Bible to the person who needs to know and get a good overview of the Scriptures.
Good Biblical Introduction.......2006-03-05
Dr. Fee's presentation of the biblical material is clear, concise, and up to date. He takes the fruits of biblical scholarship and makes them available to the average lay reader, while not losing sight of what the original authors of the material intended. A strong point of the book is the fact that it situates each of the biblical books and the material they contain within the historical horizon of Israels encounter with God and the World.
For the careful reader Dr Fee's material will help define the central importance of the issue of the 'mission to the Gentiles'--which first presents itself in Genesis narrative, particularly when God initiates the covenant with Abraham. God's choice of Israel is the beach head from which the salvation of the world is launched. This fulfillment of God's purpose is dramatized by Israel's encounter with the nations about her and her response to that encounter right up to, and including the New Testament and continues to the present.
This is high drama, indeed, and this book helps the average person to see the drama and, better, their place in it.

Book Description
APPLIED CALCULUS, 3/E brings together the best of both new and traditional curricula to meet the needs of today's students. The author team's extensive teaching experience and proven ability to write innovative and relevant problems has made this text a true bestseller. Exciting new real-world applications make this new edition even more meaningful to students in management, life and social sciences. This book will work well for those departments seeking a middle ground for their instructors.
APPLIED CALCULUS, 3/E exhibits the same strengths from earlier editions including the "Rule of Four", an emphasis on concepts and modeling, exposition that students can read and understand and a flexible approach to technology. The conceptual and modeling problems, praised for their creativity and variety, continue to motivate and challenge students.

Excellent Choice for the Non-Math Student.......2007-03-31
This is a magnificant calculus book. It is aimed at students in business, the social sciences, and the life sciences. This is done by first the examples and problems. But perhaps even more important the wording of the text is such that these students will understand what they are trying to convey and to clearly show them how calculus can be used to solve problems in their particular field.
At the beginning of the book, three pages of the Preface, the applications discussed in the text are listed by: Business and Economics, Life Sciences and Ecology, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences. Under these headings are subjects like: Value of a Car, AIDS, Cancer Rates, Abortion Rate and so on. These are subjects that will have some interest and applicability to students rather than the old traditional problems like water flowing into and out of a bucket that used to be the mainstream of teaching calculus.
Finally, calculus marks a transition in the study of mathematics for a student. Up until now he studied arithmetic every year in school, maybe he finally got to a bit of algebra and trig. Now he is exposed to a whole new world of ways to handle problems that go beyond anything he has seen before. This book eases the student into an understanding of how to approach these problems better than any I've seen.
Harvard.......2007-01-31
Sorry to bother you with this review. The authors of this book are distinguished professors at Harvard University (a fine school, no matter what anyone says). Professor Gleason, in particular, is a mathematician of world-historical importance. In a sense, taking lectures from Gleason is not worse than having a lecture from Laplace or Poincare or any of the other great lights of mathematics. I confess that I haven't seen the book or held it between my hands, but I couldn't just leave it here with only a one star review of a disgruntled student. Really, the book has to be better than a single star if Gleason even held it in his hand once.

Solutions? Please!.......2007-05-17
This book only has every other odd. And the solutions are hard to follow, just like the accompanying text book. If I wasn't taking class in a classroom environment and only had the books to rely on I'd be in bad shape.
A waste of Money.......2007-01-05
This book was a real waste of money. Only a select number of odd problems were worked out, and it always seemed to be the easier problems. Much of the time just the answer was given, which could be found in the back of the textbook. This is the perfect accompaniment to a very confusing, poorly written textbook
Helpful for the selective few .......2007-01-04
This is a good companion book for the math book that follows. The answers are given in good detail and explained enough that you could follow what they are saying. The only real problem I had with the book was, it only had the odd answers. You are practically buying an extended version of the back of the book.
Useless solution guide.......2006-12-13
When doing problems for the textbook, it seemed that the solution guide did a pretty poor job in describing the correct way to do the problems. Oftentimes it did not even have a sample for each type of problem in the section review excersises. The solutions found in the back of the book were an adequate enough solution guide for at least the calculus class I had taken.
Not that you have much choice........2006-11-14
Not all odds are listed. Most of the ones needed in my course were not there, probably by teacher design. The text book that it goes with is just as bad. If you can take a class from somewhere else that uses another book especially if you need the examples to follow. I found it hard to learn from as a returning student.

Calculus, Single Variable, Student Solutions Manual.......2005-09-14
I bought this Student Solutions Manual as your website suggested along with Calculus : Single Variable. The solution manual was the third edition while Calculus, Single Variable was the fourth edition. You need to correct your website because the solutions manual does not match the text book. I did return this book.

Worthless.

Save your money for a voluntary root canal!.......1999-10-19
This book is so pathetically minimal that I award it...1/10 of a star. (It may be useful in starting a fire in your fireplace...maybe). DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS SOLUTION MANUAL! It only includes about every other odd solution, and most of the time, it shows just the (often incorrect) answer. The worst part is, that same answer is usually in the back of the textbook! It is definitely not worth even $5.00, so save your money!

Book Description
In the aftermath of infidelity, couples often struggle with emotional turmoil and sometimes make decisions they later regret. Getting Past the Affair helps them overcome the initial shock, understand what happened and why, and think clearly about their best interests before they act. Based on the combined insight of leading marital therapists and researchers, this unique program encourages couples and individuals to take things one step at a time, whether they stay together or part ways. Research shows that roughly two-thirds of those who use the approach find it significantly beneficial, making it the only program to have been empirically tested--and proven--to help partners restore trust and rebuild their marriage after an affair. Even in cases where reconciliation is impossible, this compassionate, insightful book emphasizes ways for readers to recover personally and avoid emotional scars so they can pursue healthier relationships in the future.

Help is here!.......2007-06-12
I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to live through infidelity. I have read several books and this one had so much helpful information. It was written in a way that didn't attack the participating party or the injured party but gave good information for all parties involved. Unfortunately my spouse chose not to read the book with me but reading it really helped me to understand and validate what I was going through. If you are faced with the heartbreak of infidelty this is a must read book. If you don't read anything else, read this.
Book Description
True Tales of the ridiculous, the silly, and the just plain weird cases doctors face—lampooning the medical bureaucracy that makes practicing medicine and getting medical care such a headache.
Doctors have a sick sense of humor. This is the deep, dark, and hilarious secret of the medical profession revealed by the irreverent Dr. Douglas Farrago in his popular satirical magazine, Placebo Journal—affectionately known by its thousands of fanatic readers as “Mad magazine for doctors” and called, by U.S. News.com, “raunchy, adolescent, and very funny.” Now, in The Placebo Chronicles, Dr. Farrago has compiled the best of the most outrageous and uproarious true stories to come out of the ERs and examination rooms of doctors all over the country.
Submitted by actual physicians, these are the stories they tell each other at cocktail parties and in doctors’ lounges, trading sidesplitting and truly unusual tales of their most embarrassing medical moments, the grossest things they’ve ever seen in medicine, their favorite Munchausen patients, and much more, including “The X-Ray Files”—mind-boggling anecdotes and images of the oddest foreign objects doctors have removed from patients. Not for the faint of heart, the humor in The Placebo Chronicles is brutally funny—just what the doctor ordered to guard against the ill effects of an M.D.’s worst enemies: the Medical Axis of Evil, a.k.a. drug companies, HMOs, and malpractice insurers.
Fully illustrated with fake advertisements—for pseudopharmaceuticals like OxyCotton Candy and Indifferex (the mediocre antidepressant)—this refreshingly honest collection invites doctors and patients alike to share the laughter, a liberal dose of the very best medicine.
Customer Reviews:
Are You a Doctor or a Patient?.......2007-07-30
I could see what was funny about this book and I appreciate the serious dedication required to get through the grind of schooling and to actually practice. I can even appreciate the contempt these practitioners must feel with patients that don't adhere to regimen, or narc seekers who think they are pulling the wool over the practitioner's eyes. These issues were presented in a very humerous fashion by the Doctors - often it is a hoot.
But it also made me sad because though things are better than they used to be, there is still a core problem with communication between doctors and patients. For various reasons, certain people get a certain kind of treatment and labels that others don't. There is a documented problem with gender, race, and class bias, and it doesn't take too much imagination to see that it might cut both ways. I could go on for a while about this subject but I won't - google it.
The contempt some of the doctors unload about their patients was for me a bit hurtful. I have often sat on the other side of a doctor's desk, not always the case but more often than not a person with a HUGE ego who is irritated at the prospect of having to explain what is wrong to the yokel patient. I have been treated like dirt, or a drug addict by MDs for perfectly legitimate and well documented problems. But judging from this book, I guess we are all a pain in the butt to these guys. They must be relieved that the healthcare crisis is keeping so many people out of their offices.
I liked the book but suggest another book, this time BASED ON THE PATIENT'S EXPERIENCES OF THE DOCTORS. Now this could be really really funny! With chapter headings like, "The Doctor Who Didn't Think I Knew He Was Manually Raping Me and Other Stories", and "How Can I Get This Doctor To Listen To Me Outside Of Batting Him On the Head?" or "I Told Him I Was Allergic To That Stuff". It could be really funny!
I took special note of the litigation issues these doctors express concern about. I've had at least three egregious, actionable, horrible snafus done to me by MDs over a period of about 25 years. I have NEVER taken any of these practitioners to court, even when I was urged to by other professionals. I imagine more people don't file than do, and the doctors should be more appreciative of that.
Read the book to find out about the other side; you've got to have compassion for them but keep a balanced view and look out for my new book, the companion volume, coming out soon.
Reality bites!.......2005-12-18
This book is the one you reach for after a long, hard day with whiny patients, screeching moms and parents who keep forgetting to give their epileptic kid his phenobarbital.
You need to put it all together and solve the mystery of how so many people make it from day to day with the worst habits and total inability to take care of themselves...
The irksome part of being a doctor is that you start out thinking it is all so noble and then you realize that in a room full of patients, staff and you, no one would ever agree with you.
Placebo Chronicles will radically revise your perspective as a health care provider and remind you how to get by from day to day! A great book for anyone who wants to know what real life in health care is like...Warning: you will never be able to watch any of those "dramedy" medical shows without snickering over their rank stupidity ever again, so read at your own risk!
mybookopinion MISSED THE POINT.......2005-09-29
As a st doc I can attest to the many stories in this book...in particular are the 2am ER narc seekers, heres a hint people, wether its in the ER at 2am or your FP at 10AM if you are a seeking narcotics everyone knows it, no one beleives how your rx was stolen, or how your toilet has passed so much codeine it should be given its own DEA number. Great read for those looking for some relief from the PC world we live in when you can be sued for telling a patient she is too fat and the once noble profession has been reduced to something akin to a walking lottery ticket, you can find refuge in the chronicles at least until that sheriff tracks you down with that subpoena.
To the reviewer with the 40 lb tumor heres a hint: the fact that these stories make headlines are a testament to their rarity. It is also getting more difficult to practice medicine due to the bulging waste lines...palpating organs is more difficult due to the fat folds so I can see how a tumor maybe missed in a 500 pound pt. On another note, spend a few weeks in a county ER, ride with an ambulance crew, spend a few days fighting with an insurance compnay to pay for something, or take a listen to some drone pharm rep lecturing about their product using scientific words and biostatistical analysis that were probably not taught between the time they left the sorority and the time they got the drug rep required implants and you will realize that making fun of these things is the only way to keep sane. I didn't even mention the paranoia at being sued by everyone you lay your hands on.....Or you can save yourself a week, read this book with an open mind and you will be inside the ER to see the 42 year old at 3AM for a cough they've had for the last 2 years but just got around to it at 3AM on a Friday or argue with the mom loaded with gold about the $4.00 bottle of Tylenol her kid needs...then watch her throw the Rx out getting in a better car than what you drive wondering why?
I sure hope this is farce..........2005-09-26
I sure hope this is farce. It reads like a bunch of articles written by the doctors of the several people I know who have been turned away by their doctors for being hypochondriacs (or worse, in case of the several "my favorite Munchausen" sections of this book), only to turn out to have incurable bone cancer, breast cancer, giant ovarian cysts, and blocked up gall bladders. If the first doctor had not called up the specialist for a laugh (see the "new doctor vs. old doctor" list), these conditions may have been caught before they reached the critical or fatal stage. Read this if you want to get inside the head of the doctor who told you that you're fat and lazy rather than the one who caught finally "caught" your 40-pound tumor (true story).
Better than NEJM or AAPA journal.......2005-05-31
LOVE love love this book. As 15-plus year PA in ER and General Practice have NOT had the "Residency" Blues but have incountered most if not all of the patients/providers in this book. If one cannot keep a sense of humor and balance, I question if one can truely provide "medical care". Big thumbs-up for Dr. Farrago, and can't wait for more books, columns, papers from The Placebo Chronicles!

Book Description
The Third Edition of CALCULUS reflects the strong consensus within the mathematics community for a new balance between the contemporary ideas of the original editions of this book and ideas and topics from earlier calculus books. Building on previous work, this Third Edition has the same philosophy as earlier editions but represents a new balance of topics. CALCULUS 3/e brings together the best of both new and traditional curricula in an effort to meet the needs of even more instructors teaching calculus. The author team's extensive experience teaching from both traditional and innovative books and their expertise in developing innovative problems put them in an unique position to make this new curriculum meaningful to students going into mathematics and those going into the sciences and engineering. The authors believe the new edition will work well for those departments who are looking for a calculus book that offers a middle ground for their calculus instructors.
CALCULUS 3/e exhibits the same strengths from earlier editions including the Rule of Four, an emphasis on modeling, exposition that students can read and understand and a flexible approach to technology. The conceptual and modeling problems, praised for their creativity and variety, continue to motivate and challenge students.

This solutions manual is pretty much a waste of money (just like the textbook this is used for). For some reason, it answers every OTHER odd number. Basically answering problems 1, 5, 9, and so on. Other times, it actually skips some of those numbers!
The only reason why I gave it 2 stars is the fact that the problems the solution's manual does answer actually did help a little. Unfortunaly, it can be wrong once in a while, as my teacher can contest.
Don't waste your money on this unless you can find it for at most, a third of the price. Even then, the frustration probably still isn't worth it.
Calculus: Student Confusion Manual.......2002-02-07
This "solutions manual" only offers answers for every fourth question. The most painful part is that the so-called solutions are merely the answers from the back of the text book put into complete sentences; there is NO additional instruction.
Unfortunately, Amazon does not offer any way to properly rate this waste of money.

Rewarding Book.......2007-05-13
If you want to learn integration techniques and become a whiz at basic computational calculus, you need another book. If you want a book that gives you a lot of proofs and tons of examples, you also probably need another book.
So why do I give the book 4 stars? The answer is _the problems_. I used this book for 3 semesters of calculus, and I felt like _I_ actually discovered a lot of the machinery of calculus just by doing the problems. It's a great feeling to discover rather than be taught. That's what this book helps you do.
Of course, this means you will probably have to do a few more problems than the teacher assigns (unless the teacher is very in tune with the book and knows exactly which problems are related). Also, when you get to techniques of integration, you'll probably need to refer to other books for examples. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it is always better to learn from multiple sources.
One big downside is the cost. But, unfortunately, that's a problem with all American text books. Try to get a used copy.
Oh and about the book and solution manual not giving many solutions... Don't worry about it. When you solve most of these problems, you _know_ when you get the answer because everything will click and make sense. As for integration problems, just plug 'em into your TI-89, Maple, or the free Wolfram Online Integrator to check your answers!
In summary, this is a genuinely enjoyable book for problem solvers. Don't be scared by the other reviews. They are actually correct, in a way, but are simply coming from a somewhat narrowed perspective.
Great Book!.......2006-01-08
I don't know why so many people dislike this book...I probably learn in a different manner than they do. I've had to learn most of my calculus through Stewart's Early Transcendentals book, which I found very dry and mostly uninteresting. Luckily, I bought this book while I was taking a year off and taught myself calculus, having never even heard of a limit or a derivative before.
If you like thinking about the ideas behind things, and then learning about the formalism and mathematics of it, then this book is for you. If you prefer proofs, analysis, and "learn these steps and solve these problems" examples, you'll probably want to find a different text.
I can remember, though, the JOY of actually deriving things for myself, like how to calculate the volume of a solid rotated about some line or some such nonsense, because I could understand exactly what was needed. That is how I would describe this book: It's not a book about proving theorems and making you memorize a bunch of rules. Instead, it makes you really understand the subject matter, so that you can use the ideas of calculus to solve a variety of problems, even if they're problems you have no idea how to solve when you first read through them!
That is one thing that this book taught me that I found indespensible. You don't have to know how to do something, because you might be able to figure it out yourself instead of having some professor or text book or internet article tell you how to! Perhaps this approach is a little too ambitious, and I'll admit I spent a lot of time going through this text trying to reason things out, but it was time well spent.
So I suppose my advice would be not to buy this book unless you have to (for a course), or you're really willing to go through those problems spending a lot of time thinking about how to apply the IDEAS presented in the examples and text to the problem at hand. In the latter case, I think you'll find that the time you invest in this book will give you unexpected rewards.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST!.......2005-07-04
This is the worst calculus book out there.
One reviewer says "This book is for good students." I disagree. I am a good student at a tough university and I hated this book. Out of 35 students who took my calc class only 2 got an A. I was one of the two. So you can take my word because I worked my ass off to get that A. THIS IS THE WORST BOOK ON THE MARKET. Why?
1. Not enough examples
2. The examples are either super easy or super hard
3. Poorly explained concepts
4. Questions on things hardly explained
5. Tons of ambiguous questions
6. Poorly designed text
I could go on and on... Just skip this book. Please. It will make me feel better.
Total Dissapointment.......2004-10-29
I am using this text to teach myself Calculus. Explanations are skimpy, and offer very few practice problems with each of the steps worked out. Only odd answers are printed in the back (and some odd answers are not printed). I'm using the Schaum's OutLine Series, and it's MUCH MUCH better. I bought this book used, and for what I paid for it, I could have gotten the Schaums Calculus and Pre-Cal, and still had enough left over for dinner and a movie. Sad.
Awful.......2004-07-20
Ok this textbook does not teach at all. It basically just provide examples that is it. IT doesn't say why you do it or explain the calculus at all. The way the book explain calculus does not help at all when it comes to doing the problems. The answers in the back of the book does not match the problems throughout the chapters.
As an undergrad, this book is not student friendly at all. I basically did not use the textbook and depended on the professor and math tutoring. I love math and I understand it, but this book does not help. I am unable to learn from this textbook.
