Book Description

Muhammad Ali is one of the most remarkable personalities of our time and the greatest sportsman to ever walk the earth. To honor this living legend, TASCHEN has created a work that is both epic in scale and just as unique and vibrant as the man himself. It is more than appropriate that a worthy tribute to his life would reflect the scale of his achievements, and "GOAT - Greatest of All Time" proves itself up to the task.

Four years in the making, and the most comprehensive look at Ali to date, "GOAT" tips the scales at 34 kgs (75 lbs) and is 50 cm x 50 cm (20" x 20") in size. 800 pages of archival and original photographs, graphic artwork and articles and essays - many of them previously unpublished - chronicle six decades of his life in stunning detail. To cap it all, the project takes place with the participation of Ali himself and those members of his inner circle who have been closest to him over the years: from managers and key ringside cornermen to friends, family and children; from spiritual and other advisers to broadcasters, essayists and journalists.

No stone has been left unturned in telling this remarkable story: the book features written contributions from hundreds of writers and photographers, as well as over 3,000 photographs of Ali's dazzling life. Plus Ali's own insights, writings and drawings, and reproductions of fight posters and classic memorabilia.

In addition, new work - commissioned from artist Jeff Koons - gives the Ali mythology a twenty-first-century edge and an entirely contemporary context. "GOAT" will come in two versions: the (Champ's Edition), limited to the first 1,000 copies and featuring a specially-commissioned congenial multiple by Jeff Koons as well as four silver gelatin prints by Howard L. Bingham, signed by the photographer and Ali himself. The remaining 9,000 copies come with a photo-litho made by Jeff Koons. All 10,000 copies are individually signed by Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons.

If you love Ali get his own SOul of A Buterfly or the other bio - if you can find it, as it really gest into the soul of this great man, and into his depp and abiding faith, which is a place no one any longer goes.

Of course if any of the three thousand or twelve thousand DO get to Ali and his family it will make up in a SMALL way for all the millions managers and damagers stole form him, and will get distributed to good working charitable and humanitarian organizations that actually help people, as Ali gives it all away to those in need, unless Bush has declared him officially a funder of bad and dubious causes

so if it goes to Ali, live large y'all

First things first: This book has got talent. It might have once weighed in at a measily 40 pounds (500 pages), but has built up its strength and is now a strong contender. Few could question the book's power when it overcame several best sellers, rising up the non-fiction ranks like a soaring upper cut to truly punish George Foreman's jaw. The only question remaining for the experts is this: Will this book have what it takes to take on in a heavy weight bout its subject ?

5 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing book.......2005-01-24

I had a chance to check out this book at the Tattered Cover of Denver

It is MASSIVE and HUGE

The photographs inside are amazing! It definitely attracts the non-reader, and visual lover, within all of us

The price is VERY steep - only purchase if you're a REALLY big fan

Otherwise, I at least suggest that you find a copy, just to see what a really huge book, about a pretty big dude, is like ----- the book is a feat, in itself - just like Muhammad Ali

1 out of 5 stars Ali as object of conspicuous consumption.......2004-07-21

I revere Ali. I had the honor of meeting him for an author appearance for a previous photo essay book when I worked for a New York-based publisher. The Champion Edition at $10,000 and the cheaper edition at $3000 are antithetical to who the man is, or has been. He has always been a man of the people, and not a sycophant for the wealthy who buy books like they buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway. If there was any information about proceeds from the sale of the books benefitting someone other than the publishers and authors I would feel differently. As it is, this is just an opportunity for those who'd have sent him to jail for avoiding the draft to own him. I'd wager that they care less about what the man stands for than that they can now own something their friends can't afford. If you love Ali and have $3000 or $10,000 to spend, give to a charity in his name.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars!.......2004-05-09

"Goat: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali" is seventy-five pounds of the finest photos, essays and articles on the man himself. The packaging is great, with a box to protect the cover from shelf wear.

Nearly every photograph in this huge book is a work of art, many of which have never before been seen. The composition and details of the photographs are amazing. I found myself staring at them for hours.

The hefty price will scare off many, but it really is worth it. Don't forget that it comes autographed by Ali and Jeff Koons. (Meaning it will only go up in value.)

Overall, this beautiful book really is the ultimate tribute. It rates at least ten stars!

Book Description

DIRTY WOW WOW AND OTHER LOVE STORIES is a celebration of the lovey, binky, or blankie--known as the "transitional object" in psychoanalytic terms--that eased us through the uncertainties and loneliness of childhood. Bundles of comfort and security fashioned from fluff and fur, these treasured friends have a lifetime of stories sewn up in their tattered bodies: a trip to Paris smushed up in a suitcase, a new home behind the family liquor cabinet, an interminable wait in the lost-and-found bin. With stunning photographs that reveal the personalities within, DIRTY WOW WOW is at once humorous, wistful, and oddly comforting--like a shabby childhood favorite who's tucked away but never forgotten.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2007-09-01

I agree with the reviewer that said this book was just so-so - I really thought this a great book concept and was looking forward to heartwarming stories of people who remember their toys fondly, and funny pictures of wretched, worn, well-loved toys. However, the authors seem to fall short of the promised delivery on the cover - one of the "toys" was simply a photo of torn up cloth and the entry was called "Rags"...and the "story" was about how children may take to rags instead of stuffed toys. I felt a bit cheated. I would much have preferred real people and real stories about their stuff - maybe a photo of an interviewee and toy today and his/her childhood photo clutching the toy when new. I always loved those photos. But this book doesn't have such things - it seems superficial, more an artsy pretty photo book than a book where real legwork was taken to uncover the stories.

This is a darling book of photographs and loving tributes to some of the scruffiest and best loved of childhood "lovies". It's currently getting much attention as my coffee table book and is bringing both smiles and sighs of remembrance to our visitors. I wish only that my own "Lindy", "Andy Pandy", "Ted" and "Snoozer" had been honored among its pages.

I received this book as a gift and immediately had to order it as a gift for my sister who turns 65 next week. Her threadbare companion until our family left it in a motel enroute from Chicago to Seattle, was a small down pillow, called her "My My". She was only four years old, I was nine and I can still remember her cries of anguish.

Almost anyone can relate to this charming book.

Nona Kilgore Power signed her book at BookExpo America and bought some of the hero dogs along -- the animals and their handlers received well-deserved respect from people in the long autograph line.

The author has done a fine job collecting beautiful photos of the dogs and interviewing their handlers on what they did at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Fresh Kills and in Shanksville, Pa. There is undeniable heartache in the fact that so few dogs found bodies let alone survivors. But the search was necessary and the fact that some search teams couldn't hide their disappointment just demonstrates that courage requires forging ahead even if the outlook is bleak.

Some of the notable stories here include that of Piper, a shepherd hero from New Jersey who helped find the bodies of 15 firefighters.

More often, the dogs' role was like that of golden retriever Bretagne (Brittany), from Texas. Her handler Denise Corliss relates in the book, "Sometimes she would leave my side and go sit next to a firefighter. Not just anyone ... she was very deliberate about whom she chose." Often she found a silent firefighter and joined him in a solemn moment.

Corliss remembered how unexpected the dogs' roles were. "One man especially stands out. He started petting Britanny and told me he didn't even like dogs. He knelt down beside her and told me his best friend was missing. His friend really loved dogs and would be very upset if he didn't pet this dog."

Other dogs consoled the families of victims at the Pentagon.

"Dog Heroes of September 11th" is certain to inspire more Americans to get involved in canine search and rescue and to help us remember those dogs, many of whom have retired or passed away in the past five years, who didn't hesitate, despite conditions infinitely worse than those they had seen in training, to search deep voids in hopes of finding people they could help.

If you're a fan of K9 helpers like me, you'll love this book. It was a great look at so many dogs, their trainers, and their stories. Truly great to see and read about all these dogs, their efforts make you feel warm inside :)

Order this book ... and please don't be put off by its pallid subtitle, A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, which doesn't begin to do justice to the utterly unique and moving story contained within. The Color of Water tells the remarkable story of Ruth McBride Jordan, the two good men she married, and the 12 good children she raised. Jordan, born Rachel Shilsky, a Polish Jew, immigrated to America soon after birth; as an adult she moved to New York City, leaving her family and faith behind in Virginia. Jordan met and married a black man, making her isolation even more profound. The book is a success story, a testament to one woman's true heart, solid values, and indomitable will. Ruth Jordan battled not only racism but also poverty to raise her children and, despite being sorely tested, never wavered. In telling her story--along with her son's--The Color of Water addresses racial identity with compassion, insight, and realism. It is, in a word, inspiring, and you will finish it with unalloyed admiration for a flawed but remarkable individual. And, perhaps, a little more faith in us all.

Book Description

This is a book that will "make you proud to be a member of the human race," says Mirabella, and countless readers have already discovered its power. Written in remembrance of his Polish-born, Southern-raised Jewish mother-who married a black man and raised twelve children, all of whom completed college-The Color of Water is a classic of the memoir genre, a testament to love, and a truly American story.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars If you like stereotypes..........2007-09-27

If you like reinforcing stereotypes, then James McBride's book is for you. Jews have big noses, they only care about money, and of course, his converted mother only finds love through Jesus. But let's move past that. A great mother? Perhaps her children would not have had to eat sugar as a meal or wake up at 3 am (when she came home from work with free food from her employer) to eat-- else they went hungry if she had the number of children that she and her could support. Perhaps living in a house where the dog's feces is kicked under the radiator is not an indication of a strong mother. How about when she pays one fare for the subway and puts herself and the twelve children through on that one fare. These are not virtues. The writing was weak; the message was weaker.

2 out of 5 stars A Jewish Mother.......2007-09-24

Legal History of the Color Line: The Rise And Triumph of the One-drop Rule

A better title for this book would be: A Dark Mulatto's Tribute to His Jewish Mother. The word "black" denies the European Jewish ancestry of the author and his siblings and the word "white" denies his mother's ethnic heritage. Mrs. McBride's Jewish ethnic values were far more important to her children's success than being "white."

4 out of 5 stars Parenthood Pride -- A Mother Must Whimper.......2007-08-13

"Times were different then." Something espoused by the author's mother -- a Polish Jew who grew up in the Jim Crow south before World War II, and then raced away from her self-described purgatory to New York -- where she embraced mixed union, poverty and Jesus Christ.

How people of mixed races could live without constant clamour and request for surrender is not known to the 21st century people -- I grew up with bussing and other issues, but never saw a segregated movie theater, water fountain, or seating area. We really don't know how far we have come. And, we don't know how hard the struggle of others has been.

And, to help us understand that path, we have James McBride's autobiography/biography -- in pica print is his tale and in italic (every other chapter) is his mother's biography written by her son or her autobiography as transcribed from her taped sittings with her son.

Some things which she lived with will astound you -- I refer not to the biracial issues, but to the classic violations of Judeo-Christian ethics by the author's grandfather. As a rabbi and devout conservative Jew, the author's grandfather, we learn, abused his spouse emotionally (if not physically), abused his daughter sexually, and abused the black man in the south for personal financial gain. Interestingly, all had the same achilles heel -- each was a weakened victim. The wife a victim of polio and contract marriage, the daughter a victim of youth, and the black people victims of unadulterated 1930's racism.

Emerging from this broiling escapade by the father came the flight of a young woman to New York (the author's mother) who raised 12 bi-racial children whose faces and hair told most strangers they were anything other than children of a conservative Jew who emigrated from Poland.

In the even-numbered paragraphs (those autobiographical passages of the author), I had laugh-out-loud episodes when he recited events of his naive youth when he asked questions about his race, about his mother's race and more. Like Frank McCourt, he delivers the lines in such accurate manner that you feel as though you are sitting back and watching kids in action doing their thing which we, as adults, can not well remember nor well imitate.

This was solid fun reading based upon an extremely unique factual content.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing..........2007-07-18

I was very disappointed with this book, especially given so many positive reviews. Though I certainly admired McBride and his siblings' ability to achieve so much given so little, I was appalled and even morally offended by the sheer stupidity and negligence of his mother as she is described (apparently in her own words) throughout the book.

I think we the readers are so overwhelmed with empathy and admiration for 12 children rising out of poverty despite obstacles of racism, poor education, no support from extended family, etc., that we forget to ask the obvious question: why would any person raise 12 children in poverty in the first place?? How is this a good decision? A mother has no job and no discernable skills, and is married to what seems like a great man - wouldn't she think after the 4th kid that "maybe I should make sure I can provide for my first 4 children before I have a 5th..or a 12th?"! To me, this is morally reprehensible! And if that's not enough, the book is littered with negligent decision making while raising her 12 kids. For example, when she drives a car without a license, she seriously risks jail time (and bankrupcy/legal problems if she hits something/someone). What would happen to her kids then? I guarantee if this same woman with no license and 12 children ran into your car, you'd be thinking much different thoughts, the nicest being "what a complete moron"! She obviously must have been a good, strong, moral woman, but she was also lucky. For every 12 child family success story, there are probably 100 other abject failures.

If I went into the woods with no water and no food and no sense of direction, and I made it out alive after 10 days of on-the-verge-of-death adventure, you might be inspired by the luck/perseverence/moral fortitude...or you might just think "why did that moron go into the woods with no water, food, or sense of direction"? That's the way I felt about this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective.......2007-07-14

I loved this man's view of his mother and her passions and struggles. He saw her imperfections but chose to focus elsewhere. In a world where so many are looking to blame others for their stations or place in this world, this son took the good that his mother offered and channeled it. I have always believed that one can either focus on the empty cup and rationalize why the cup cannot be filled, or go into the world and seek the fullness lacking. I love that God is the color of water since that is what I have always believed. My God is so colorless and my love of mankind is also based on a true belief that we're to focus outside ourselves and the world will be a better place. Naive one might say?? I say that it is only the truly brave that reach and expect the world to be a better place.

5 out of 5 stars Takes technical analysis to a whole new level........2005-11-03

I am in the middle of reading both JM Hurst's original work on market cycles, as well as Brian Millard's modern treatment of cycle analysis. I've finished this one today.

This book is for the technician or trader who wishes to think for himself, and not rely on over-used, and often misapplied mathematical techniques.

Millard instructs you on how to use mathematical tools to extract cycles from stock price data, predict price and time zones, and determine the optimum time period to trade in.

Through simple logic, Millard demonstrates the optimum time period to trade in is between 50 and 100 days. If you are a diehard daytrading scapler, you probably won't like the conclusions he comes to in this book.

Through the simple use of moving averages and envelope channels, you can learn to pick out the low risk points to place directional trades. I've experimented with the techniques for a few months now, and they are very useful.

What is fascinating, is that the trading rules developed from cycles often match up very well with classical chart pattern trading rules.

The author does an excellent job of explaining the mathematical properties of moving averages, and how the use of moving averages in cycle analysis differs from their use in conventional trend following systems.

Some reservations about the techniques: 1. Cycle analysis uses arithmatic scaling for measuring the magnitued of cycles. This strikes me as invalid on time frames greater than weekly, due to the logarithmic price changes over long periods of time.

Point and figure chartists have similar problems--dealing with changes in price level. It is going to be very hard to draw valid channels on some large cap tech stock that declined from 100 to 10 during the bear market. Having said that, for shorter time periods, these methods are fine, and the techniques to measure wavelength (time targets) are still valid, even on monthly data.

    2. The author makes absolutely no use of volume in the analysis. I suspect incorporating volume into the analysis of cycles would improve the results.

    3. The author makes it appear that stock price data is just like any other data. With this, I disagree. There is a psychological element that is missing from this type of analysis. Cycles are not the complete answer to trading, but they are a very good start.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-10-22

I can't beleive the "other review" I just read. I was flabergasted! This book is one of the best of it's type that I have read. I am not the expert and still consider myself a "student", but I've been succesfully trading commodities for over a year and have amassed a small library of books of which this is the best. Contrary to the other review I just read, I found this book to be very easy to read and exceptionally stimulating.

Mr. Millard has taken what J.M. Hurst started and developed it to new levels. In this book he has expanded & built upon the principles put forth by J.M. Hurst. He has since built upon this foundation with his own work on the subject of cycle & channel analysis.

This book contains a wealth of information which can be utilized right away. Millard shows how to use simple paper & pencil methods and also implimentation of numerical methods which are quite sophisticated.

My entire trading methodology has been modified because of this book. To me, Milllards writing is clear, concise, and right to the point. I am not a math wiz and I did have to re-read one section of one chapter a few times for clarity, but this was not difficult once given a little thought, which is well worth the time and effort.

Millard goes into a great deal of detail with regard to trading and shorter cycles. He quite clearly demonstrates that shorter duration trades are more profitable, hence, his comments and conclusions are in harmony and agreement with J.M. Hurst and his book "Profit Magic od Stock Transaction Timing" (also a great book). In fact, Millard puts forth a strong and compelling case for his recommended short duration trades of between 50 - 100 days. As far as I can tell, J.M. Hurst's short duration trades were in the range of 36 - 42 days. Both seem to agree completely if you ask me.

If you are a fan of cycles you will really like this book. You will find valuable information from a notable British investment writer whos has published many other works (and software) as well. Do search under "Brian Millard" and see for yourself.

A great book. By all means - get it. Get J.M. Hurst's book too. They are a great combination!

1 out of 5 stars Read the original work instead.......2000-09-07

This "tribute" to J.M. Hurst is a very difficult read at best. He took the work of Hurst and made it very complex and in my opinion useless in real life trading. The publisher says that this book "clarifies" and "updates" Hurst's original book. Hardly.

I totally disagree with the author's assertion that the optimal trading period is 50 - 100 days. Hurst's main premise was the shorter the cycle the faster profits would accumulate by rolling into other opportunities as soon as the trade was closed, compounding the gains (pg 24).

Hurst's "The Profit Magic of Stock Transaction Timing" is a classic text for anyone interested in cycles or swing trading. Buy that book instead.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous and beautiful pop-up historical work of of art.......1999-01-03

This book is sure to sit on may coffee tables of both those who own and ride Harley's, as well as those who appreciate the beauty of the machine, it's legacy and the creativity in which the book was put together. The Harley logo on the front of the book, when pressed, gives the sound of a Harley engine being started and then fades in the distance. I recommend this book for teenage through senior. By the way, I don't drive a Harley or am connected to the company!

    Book Description

Think you know Walt Disney World?

Do you know the backstory of Dinoland U.S.A. that unifies the entire land? Do you know how the former attraction named Dreamflight is commemorated in today's Magic Kingdom? Do you know how Ellen's Energy Adventure mentions the ride which preceded it? Do you know where the references to Horizons and World of Motion are? Do you know how Disney's Animal Kingdom pays tribute to the land it planned but never created? Do you know where the Hidden Kermit is located? Do you know how the four theme parks honor the years in which they opened?

You have probably heard a few "interesting facts" about Walt Disney World over the years. Perhaps you've heard that the windows on the second story of the buildings on Main Street honor individuals of note in WDW history? Or that the company plane Walt used to survey the eventual WDW property from the air now lives at the studios park? It's all true... but these are only two of the interesting facts pointed out in "101 Things You Never Knew About Walt Disney World." And those are only two of the best-known examples. Many of these stories deal with much more obscure, yet equally interesting, pieces of history of the theme parks. You haven't heard all these stories before!

1 out of 5 stars I want my money back.......2007-08-25

This was an unsatisfactory book. Beyond the lack of content, it was poorly edited with entire paragraphs being duplicated in various instances of the 101 'things'. There was little of value that I gained from the book. I bought this because our family will travel to disney for the first time next year and I can't say I have taken much away from it. This book seemed like the type of content that would be handed out on a promotional flyer which had a map of disney on it.

    2 out of 5 stars :(.......2007-08-13

This book contained 101 things I already knew. This book would be great for someone who is going to visit the park for the first time. If you have been studying Disney trivia for awhile you will already know these things

4 out of 5 stars Really Nice Information for the World..........2007-01-10

This is a really good source of cool information for those who wn to add details and depth to their visit to Walt Disney World. Excellent resource for the novice or seasoned visitor.

3 out of 5 stars 101 Things You Never Knew About Walt Disney World: An Unauthorized Look.......2007-01-04

This is an entertaining book. Info. contained within is concise and often repeated in other similar titles. Layout is a bit unsophisticated, but if you are a fan of the Parks, it is worthwhile to read.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't come close to "bowling me over" as author states in review!.......2006-07-24

I was disappointed by this "behind the scenes" book. Not at all as entertaining and delightful as the author wants you to believe. Some interesting facts nestled in a whole lot of information available from other books or Disney themselves. Borrow from the library if you absolutely have to read it yourself

    Book Description

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, and more recently from the jungles of Vietnam to the killing fields of Iraq, Americas soldiers of the sea have fought their countrys battles with famed valor, skill, and perseverance in the face of long odds. But where did the U.S. Marines earn their reputation as being the first to fight? It was on the South Pacific Island of Guadalcanal. There, on August 7, 1942, the 1st Marine Division stormed ashore to begin one of the most difficult and brutal campaigns of military historyand an unbroken string of victories staged across the Pacific. Up the Solomons from Guadalcanal, westward into the islands of the central Pacific, and on to the climactic campaigns of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, these are the legendary battles celebrated in this volume, a lavishly illustrated tribute to the men who led the way against Japan. Nearly 300 combat photographs, many never before published, capture the fighting Leathernecks in training and in battle, landing and mopping up, making inexorable headway through the Pacific theater. Pacific Warriors also gives readers a look at the prewar Corps and its phenomenal growth from a modest two-regiment force to a full six divisions with its own modern air force.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Visual Presentation of Pacific War.......2006-02-14

Pacific Warriors is one of those rare books that absolutely captures the essence of an era. Eric Hammel's photo selection and text sets the stage and allows the images themselves to tell the story of a generation of Marines who fought the battles in the Central Pacific during World War II. These photos remind everyone that the cost of victory over Japan did not come cheap. The combat cameramen captured the close-range fighting brilliantly, and some of the best war photography ever taken can be seen within the pages of this book. If you have even a passing interest in this topic, you need to own this work. Get it on your bookshelf right away, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Nice overview of the Pacific war........2005-09-19

This book covers the full scope of the island-hopping Marines, with vivid pictures portraying what they went through in World War II. However, if you want to follow one Marine who hit Tulagi, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima, I recommend reading "Pacific War Marine."
