Book Description
Crime Scene Photography is a book wrought from years of experience. The material has been carefully selected for ease of use and effectiveness in training, and field tested by the author in his role as a Forensic Services Supervisor for the Baltimore County Police Department.
The forensic photographer, or more specifically the crime scene photographer, must know how to create an acceptable image that is capable of withstanding challenges in court. The photographic theory and principals have to be well grounded in the physics of optics, the how-to recommendations have to work, and the end result has to be admissible in court. Crime Scene Photography blends the practical functions of crime scene processing with theories of photography to guide the reader in acquiring the skills, knowledge and ability to render reliable evidence.
* Contains over 500 photographs
* Covers the concepts and principles of photography as well as the "how to" of creating a final product
* Includes end-of-chapter exercises and a companion website that gives variations on correct and incorrect approaches to the exercises

Mediocre Photo Book.......2007-05-14
I was disappointed in this book. I waited so long to be able to afford it and I feel that I paid 10 times what the book is worth.
As a photography instructional book, it is mediocre. As a book to help advanced amateurs learn crime scene photography, it is next to useless.
The first chapters put me off and I skimmed the rest of the book looking for the value - I did not find it.
Book Description
From documenting a homicide scene to recording the detail of a bite mark, photographs can communicate more about crime scenes and the appearance of evidence than the written report. Photography is a valuable tool for recording the crime scene and explaining evidence to others.
The Crime Scene and Evidence Photographer's Guide is designed to be a field reference for those responsible for photography at the crime scene. It may be used by law enforcement officers, investigators, and crime scene technicians. It contains instructions for photographing a variety of crimes scenes and various types of evidence. It is a valuable reference tool when combined with training and experience. The Crime Scene and Evidence Photographer's Guide is also a helpful resource for students and others interested in entering into the field of crime scene investigation.
Designed to be carried in an evidence kit or camera bag, this 66 page, 5 " by 8 " publication contains step-by-step instructions for photographing crime scenes and evidence. It includes 42 example photographs, eight diagrams, and three tables.

Useful Crime Scene Info.......2007-05-14
Considering the price I paid for this, it was a decent value. It does not have as much as I wanted, but what it has is useful.
Outdated.......2006-01-25
And too expensive! This book is a small (5x7) spiral bound notebook that came out in 1997. Nothing about using a digital camera obviously. The pictures are small, B&W, and grainy. $24.95 is asking way too much for an outdated book that is lean on information to start with. I had hoped to get more info on shooting traffic collisions but there are only 5 pages!
Don't waste your money...
To think a tree was cut down for this..........2005-08-29
64 pages of obvious materials. Take photos from all perspectives. Take close up photos of evidence. Document all photos. I know, amazing isn't it (sarcasm). How someone can find this book "enlightening" that doesn't have an interest in its sale, is questionable to if they are competent as an investigator.
That's the substance of the book with some basic mentioning to photographic technique that any novice with a few months would know or have access to. There is little substance to this book. Look elsewhere for information.
Perfect Experience.......2005-08-22
The book was in excellent condition and I received it within the time promised.
ESSENTIAL PART OF A SOCO KIT.......2002-04-30
Having just started as a Scenes of Crime Officer with Leicestershire Constabulary, in January this year, and successfully completed my 9 week initial training course at NTC, Durham, I find this book a very helpful guide for photographing evidence at crime scenes. This book deals with many different kinds of things I have yet to encounter/experience as I am only now just starting to go out on my own, having been tutored for the past month or so. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to do this type of photography and to those who use photography in the job.
This book is a great introduction to the subject of crime scene and evidence photography as the pictures contained therein are excellent and the beginner is not overwhelmed by technical jargon. Although slightly high in price, I feel the book is still worth owning and it is a precious part of my SOCO kit and use the useful information provided when out in the field.
I like the fact that the book is spiral bound and easy to handle; I like the style and format of the book especially the diagrams and helpful step-by-step check lists and sample photographs.
Customer Reviews:
This book is terrible.......2007-08-16
This book has several un-truths, and is horribly out-dated (even though this edition was updated in 2006) They have very little information on digital photography, and definitely focus on the use of photography in smaller departments (and even smaller departments have gone to digital, as it is cheaper) Unless you HAVE to have this book (as I did, for the IAI CSI certification) don't buy it. TERRIBLE!
Could be a lot better!.......2004-02-05
I have read many books on the subject of Police Photography and/or Forensic Photography and this is the best book on the market. Having said that, "Police Photography" lacks clarity in describing techniques and much more.
As an instuctor of "Forensic Photography", not to be confused with "Crime Scene Documentation", the book either goes way over the head of most Police Officers who read the book, or they are left scratching their heads because certain questions remain un-answered.
In particular, the chapters covering Infrared & Ultraviolet photography require the non-physcist (99.9% of all Police Officers) to re-read those chapters mulitple times, after which they are still left bewildered by what they just read.
The equipment that is referenced throughout the book is either outdated or to expensive for most departments to afford.
While the book is the best on the market, buyer beware that it lacks a great amount of information on techniques and/or information is severly lacking.
Become a Great Police Photographer.......2001-01-08
This book has all the basics of photography. It is technical in nature, but has some great police pictures too. There is an excellent glossary of photographic terms in the back. Even though the book basically assumes you will be using a manual SLR, it covers use of old cameras right up through digital cameras. The techniques of good photography never change, even if the equipment does. This book concentrates on the type of pictures that police officers take, not taking picture of flowers,, animals, or people like most photography books.
Book Description
The Second Edition of this bestseller combines directions for the old tried and true methods of photographic documentation (cameras, films, lighting sources) with analyses of the latest methods used in the practice (video, thermography, digital imaging). Specifically, Redsicker discusses the "how-to" of basic photography, shows the essentials of videography, and offers the fundamentals of aerial, underwater, and surveillance photography as they relate to the presentation of evidence in court. Redsicker presents this information in a practical, step-by-step fashion that is bound to enable students and professionals alike to use any camera to produce their own documentations of forensic evidence. The introduction to each chapter approaches the subject of forensic photography from its "how to" basics to the proper and accepted methods of presentation of forensic photographic evidence in court. The subject matter is then presented-accompanied by illustrations and numerous examples-as a medium against which practitioners can compare their work. The glossary of terms provided at the end of the book is beneficial to the forensic photographer in the preparation of reports and courtroom testimony. Overall, The Practical Methodology of Forensic Photography, Second Edition is both a learning tool for the student of this specialized field and a necessary reference manual for the professional community. It is as useful in the classroom, laboratory, and attorney's library as it is in the field during investigation.

Quick response!.......2006-02-28
I ordered plenty in advance of needing it, and it was shipped rapidly. Thanks!
Disappointing and out of date.......2005-05-06
I bought this book as I need to be better at taking photographs during investigations of workplace injury incidents and hoped it would help.
It was therefore disappointing to find that the book (published in 2000) mostly offered suggested reading that was 20 to 30 years old.
The equipment suggestions were also dated (even allowing that the book might have been prepared in 1999).
The subject range was mostly in the range of police and fire service work even though forensic work can cover much more ground.
This is the most expensive textbook I have bought for many years, and so, overall, it was not good value for money for me.
Not worth a purchase.......2001-01-23
The author completely misses the mark with the title. It should be "How to be Fire Photographer Groupie". The author is apparently a civilian photographer with no law enforcement , crime scene investigation experience. The major topics covered are private investigator fire photographer applications with no real technical advice. He seems to justify the lack of technical advice by stating early on that he assumes the reader knows this information. My guess is the author lacks real world experience and does not know what really happens at a crime scene. Take a pass on this book.

OK, if You're Interested in Photoshop.......2007-05-08
I recently finished my certification in Fire Investigation and have since taken a course in Digital Crime Scene Photography as well as reading a couple books on digital photgraphy. I was disapointed in this book, as the majority of it dealt with managing your files with software, not actual technique. I was hoping for something a little more along the lines of a "how to" book, with regards to shooting technique and lighting. I have since returned the book and am exploring other options.
Complete book.......2003-11-28
This is a compact book (just 256 pages), for people who may need to get a general but complete idea of the matter.
And, as the matter is not that common, it's important to find in a single book so many arguments put together.
The step by step concept of the book allows beginners to start "thinking" as a forensic photographer.
The accompanying CD, with images and exercises, provides a basic and easy to understand introduction to the use of photographic elements used in legal / forensic investigations.
As a professional, I find this book too short and lacking in some details. Also, I think it's time for an updated / revised edition.

- Now I have had a chance to read through this book. I only wish that I had done so earlier.....All in all, "Forensic Genealogy" provides a fresh view of the many methods and objects that genealogists have used for decades. This one is a "keeper." I enjoyed reading "Forensic Genealogy" and suspect that you will also. You can learn more about this book and some of the techniques discussed at http://www.forensicgenealogy.info.

Forensic Genealogy: A Recomended Resource.......2006-04-30
This is not your usual basic family history book. It effectively teaches one how to think and analyze way outside the box. Once you have gathered all your family's pertinent material, this book will take you way beyond birth, death, and marriage records. The author brilliantly demonstrates how to use city directories, weather data, photo intelligence mensuration techniques, sleuthing approaches, and even a chapter on DNA testing and tracking. This is a wonderful teaching vehicle and reference manual. We would recommend it to all serious genealogists.
The author takes a highly technical subject area and transforms it into understandable tools for one to use with excellent examples from her own family investigations. This book is a mind expanding read, and we rated it a high four hearts.
Must Have for dating Pics.......2006-04-25
This book is fantastic for dating photographs. I have bins of photos that I have no clue when they were taken. The tables in here help you to pen point the dates using things you'd never think of. Once Miss Fitzpatrick was able to use a cash registar and some old ads to determine the date of a picture! The more meaty sections are when she uses the light of day to name the exact location. Now that was amazing!
Last year I had the oppurturnity to meet Colleen. She is the nicest woman and ever so intelligent! Her passion flows throughout her work and makes the book enjoyable and fascinating to read. A genius in her field, Miss Fitzpatrick gives you the tools, the websites, and the frame of mind all in this book.
Inside are charts and tables giving you dating for when each type of photograph was made, describing to a tee how to distinguish your photo.
Also included, though I've not had much time to examine that section, are chapters on reading between the lines in directories and census images, ect.
Without this book I would still be clueless. It truly is a must have.
A thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction.......2006-04-11
Forensic Genealogy is a unique contribution to genealogical studies that will enable the novice genealogist (and even the experience genealogical researcher) to utilize diverse resources and methods for developing their genealogical family histories that combines established and conventional genealogical research techniques with cutting edge advances in forensic investigation techniques to identify, understand, correlate, and detail their ancestry. Enhanced throughout will illustrations, this 182 page instructional reference shows how to create a "database" to construct a family story (including cultural profiling). An avid genealogist, Colleen Fitzpatrick offers a thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction to the subject of identification and analysis using everything from surname studies to non-paternity events, to cladograms and pairwise mismatches. Readers will learn how to become a kind of "digital detective" in analyzing documents, photographs, and records of all kinds. Concluding with a chapter on "There Will Always Be Mysteries Left", Forensic Genealogy is a welcome and seminal addition to personal and professional genealogical reference library collections. Also very highly recommended is Colleen Fitzpatrick's related instructional reference DNA & Genealogy (0976716011) with its focus on the genetic trail an ancestor leaves behind which can be traced through Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA testing, offering heretofore unavailable genetics-based expertise to genealogical inquiry for non-specialist general readers with an interest in developing their own genealogical inquiries.
Move over CSI.......2006-03-23
Don't put away those old photographs and documents. You are not through with your families history until you have read Dr. Fitzpatrick's book "Forensic Genealology". There may be many hidden secrets in all those old items. This book will teach you to look at them like a "crime scene" and discover their meaning for your ancestor.
Getting hooked on analyzing photos!.......2006-03-17
You will never look at a photo in quite the same way after reading this book. Many of us have so few photos from our families past that it makes every one of them important to telling our families history. The author helps us to be critical and wise examiners of the clues we have from our past. As one reviewer already said, the same pictures are examined as you progress through the book. There is just too much to learn to get it all in one place. Even if you didn't have any photos, there are excellent resources mentioned that could be used in any genealogy research. The book encourages the reader to extend family research beyond the usual sources like the census and city directories and dive into what the location was like where they lived, what was their occupation, what was the weather like and many other similar questions that can be pursued by extending our view of our family who lived in a location at a given time in history. I think the enthusiasm of the author is catching. It encourages that driving force to figure out and analyze the photos as evidence of our history. It is that push to go beyond the obvious for more clues.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for the open-minded investigator.......2007-02-26
Since one of my books is cited two or three times by Nickell, I may be considered biased. But "Camera Clues" is a good training ground for would-be investigators who want to learn how to study evidence before formulating hypothesis.
Nickell is rational, honest and uninterested in the sensational exploitation of celebrated crime photography. He also understands and delivers a fundamental truth: Every good photo analyst knows what he or she measures rather than what they see. In investigating the Kennedy assassination in particular, most so-called experts seem to have forgotten this sage truth.
Finally, it's a pleasure to have someone call my book "sensible." Hell hath no fury like conspiracy addicts scorned, and "sensible" is quite a change from some of the other names I've been called over the last decade and a half. Thanks, Joe.
Excellent summarization of gleening clues from photographs.......1998-01-27
_Camera Clues_ is an excellent reference for gleening clues from photographs and for serving as a basis for continued library-research into the multitude of topics covered. This book is an excellent launch pad from which to delve into the history of 19th century photography in general; some history of photographic equipment; some history of photographic technique; the interactions between general history/context and photography; as well as the more modern topics of trick photography, faked photographs, photographs used as legal evidence, and special effects. Even more important than the excellent summarization of information in this book is the extensive bibilography, as this book is written with full college-level expository-writing endnotes.
I have been restoring and copying my family's 19th-century photographs. Starting out from a basic exposure to 19th-century photographs on paper, glass plates, and metal plates, I learned much about the history of 19th-century photography from this book which is otherwise lost knowledge to the common person in this (almost-)21st-century world. I am actively using the bibliography for further investigations into focused topics.
If there were ever another edition, I would suggest more, more, more of the same, pulling in more history, more explanation of various discarded photographic technologies (e.g., carbrotypes, Lambertypes and the restrictive licensing of their patents), more context, more techniques of tracking down negatives from photography studios of old, etc. I find that there are 2 separate audiences for this book: 1) historical photograph detectives for geneological/etc work after the death of subjects in the photographs and 2) modern trick photography for establishing truthfulness, such as for a legal case. I think that both audiences hunger for greater treatment. I would request splitting this book into 2 volumes, where each volume is double or triple its current size, focusing in depth on the specific needs of those 2 disparate audiences.
The views contained in this feedback are the personal opinions of Dan'l Miller and are in no way connected with his employer or any other organization.

A great career introduction for kids.......2007-06-21
This book is well written using cases in which crime scene photography has been used to help solve crimes and exonerate the wrongly convicted. It shows kids the reason behind why photography is an important aspect to the overall crime scene investigation and gives insight into this type of work as a potential future career. It's a good one to pick up for any kid who might be interested in crime scene investigation and/or photography in general.
