Good Effort on Cracking the GMAT by Princeton Review.......2007-08-03
This book helped me a lot in my preparation for the GMAT. It gives really good examples of using things like process of elimination, pacing during the test, and GMAT tendencies to help improve your score. This book covers each section of the GMAT in great detail and has a good number of practice questions of varying difficulty. The online practice tests are useful but the scoring seems to be a little off (I scored 30 to 50 points higher on the Offical GMAT practice tests and on the actual test). I would buy this book as the "how to take the GMAT" guide and the Official Guide for GMAT Review for actual tests questions from past versions of the GMAT. As mentioned in another review the DVD is pretty worthless. If you want to watch it I would suggest watching it first just to get an overview of the test and then delve into the book. Here are some of my tips for the GMAT: 1) Find out if the school of your choice uses the scores for the writing assessment. The one I hope to attend does not which allowed me more time to prepare for the other sections and cut my test time by an hour. 2) Finish the test... from the practice tests I learned that not finishing will cost you big time. Even if you have to guess on some questions you will come out better by finishing the test compared to getting a few more problems right but not finishing. 3) Take your practice test at a location away from home (library, coffee shop, etc.)... this will get you prepared for taking the test in a different environment. 4) Time yourself on practice questions to get a feel for how long you can spend on a problem. Cracking the GMAT has a good section on pacing which will give you a game plan going into the test. Good Luck!
THE RIGHT STEP TO START .......2007-07-04
This book guide you from point A to point B, but not for all. It is the right step to prepare yourself. There are so many of the same, but be careful to pick the one best for you.
I passed using this.......2007-06-23
I had only a few months to study and not every day and I only used this book (and the free practice test that the Gmac mails out) and I got a 500 on the test. It was harder than the SAT but the advice on the video w/ the book and the practice tests ( I recommend that one focus on the tests above all) and you can do well. I did not study as much as I could have
Better than nothing.......2007-06-08
I found the questions to be a bit rudimentary. The classes might help. but you're probably better off with Kaplan, etc. classes and mentoring.
Test Prep material is good. Tests are below average.......2007-06-05
This book is good to refresh your concepts and to browse over quickly what you probably forgot since high school, but thats about it. The tests are totally way off the actual GMAT.
Especially the Math section on the online tests is too simple, and the actual GMAT questions are a few notches higher.
All in all, not worth buying. You could probably get one from a library to use. I'd recommend Kaplan to this one.

ehh, it was all right.......2007-07-14
this book isnt the best to use if you're completely lost in calc and hoping to cram it at the last minute. i had a really good teacher for calc so did not have to rely on a prep book too much, but still i found this book helpful in just doing practice problems. for 2007, the practice frq they provide you in this book are nothing like the ones on the actual test. but i'd have to agree that this book is on the easy side, so beware.
A TREACHEROUS BOOK. Shame on you Princeton Review .......2007-06-15
Let me preface this by saying that I took the AP calculus test in the mid 1980's and now have helped my daughter with a self-study course on calculus in preparation for the 2007 test. After going through a total of 4 study guides, 2 textbooks, and the last 7 years of available free response questions from the actual AP test, I found this guide to be not only inadequate but also treacherous. It will instill a false confidence which will become glaringly obvious to you when taking the real test.
The AP calculus (AB or BC) has become considerably harder in the last 4 years. Like most other books, this book seems to have been developed for the test as administered in the 1990's. In order to pass, not only do you need to know your calculus - it is also mandatory that you know how to use your calculator in order to solve calculus problems. This book completely ignores this basic fact. Unlike other books (see my other reviews), there is no section on this important topic. The only reference is in the first pages when the book states that a calculator is allowed on certain parts of the test and that the Education Testing Service recommends a calculator. The fact is that a calculator and its proper usage are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL in being able to solve some of the problems on the test (I also fault the testing service for not making it crystal clear that certain problems cannot be solved without the calculator). Princeton Review ought to know this simple fact which becomes obvious to anyone who has looked at the openly provided past free-response questions from the actual tests. For example, a question regarding volumes of revolution of an area between two curves has appeared on virtually every free-response section over the last 7 years. Each problem could not be solved without the use of a caculator in determing the points of intersection to use as your limits of integration. Rather than focusing on techniques of integration (which was a big deal for the earlier test in which calculators either weren't allowed or weren't capable), the emphasis has switched to integration via the calculator.
One last point of advice is that this book does not stress the concepts that are in turn stressed on the current tests - fundamental theorem of calculus, average value of a function by integration, and problems that depend on interpreting graphs and data points.
The book goes through each topic in calculus in a perfunctory manner that appears to have been adequate for the test I took in the 1980's, but not for the current exam.
When chosing a book, keep in mind that the test is no longer a simple can you integrate and take a derivative by hand type of exam. If you can solve the problems in this book, you may be prepared for the multiple choice non-calculator based parts, but you will NOT be prepared for the AP test as a whole.
absolutely fantastic.......2007-05-23
This book was amazing. I was really struggling in getting anything higher than a 3 on practice exams so I bought this book. It's true that the AB and BC materials are not separated, but it does include information noting which subjects are BC only. All you have to do is take note of that info and mark those sections BC yourself.
With the exception of two or three lessons, the lessons in the book were thorough and really helped me to understand the material better. The formatting was easy to follow as well and it didn't make me feel like I was doing a lot of work. I don't have my score back yet, but I can definitely say that this book helped. I'll definitely be using the rest of it for my BC exam next year.
Cracking the exams.......2007-05-16
I found this book to be helpful in some capacity. Although it covered all the necessary topics, I did not find it to be that in depth (it would probably help AB test takers more than BC). Some of the explanations made it more confusing than it was without the book. The practice tests were good, but did not provide explanations for the answers, which was a big downside. The essay questions provided in the practice section were so much easier than the actual test, so they didn't help either. Overall, a good basis for studying, but do NOT rely solely on this if you want to do well.
Dissapointing.......2007-05-12
This study book did not live up to the expectations set by other study books even by the same company. It was frought with grammatical, spelling, and factual errors. The explanations were confusing, and it offered little practical advice about how to actually take the exam well. If you need to study Calculus AB or BC for an AP exam, I strongly suggest that you try another company. This book was a dissapointment.

Good tests. Quick review.......2007-09-03
The tests were definitely the best. The review's a little brief but very very helpful for the essays, not so good for the multiple choice though. By reading this book and 5 steps to a 5, i got a 5.
Three Stars for a Score of Three.......2007-07-21
I just got my test results back, and I was relatively happy with a three. I outlined this book in the weeks before the testing day and I have to say it did help. My teacher also made us read specific chapters of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." Even though "Zinn" became the most popular swear word among my class, the book helped me superbly in my essays. I would recommend both Zinn and this for a good score of at least three, and possibly four if you studied harder than I did. If you are looking for a five, I would reccomend going to more than two sources - buy a few books and study off all you possibly can.
It worked .......2007-07-03
Our child received a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam. Aside from having a stellar AP U.S. history teacher, the student obviously gained a huge advantage in test-taking skills from this volume.
okay for a quick overview.......2007-06-12
Personally I don't think this book is very useful because it is too concise. You will not do well on the AP test if you depend on this book completely. In fact, I think you will fail the essay portion if you did not study from any other book. However, this book is good for a quick overview and can refresh your memory if you know the stuff well.

Joe Bloggs who?.......2007-07-23
To begin with, the Joe Bloggs approach designed for the retarded is a major flaw in this book. Almost every explanation encountered dealt with this average-student on the SAT who almost always misses the hard questions, thinks like an idiot and scores less than the average on the actual test. Bla bla bla approach which paradoxically (!?) occupies half of this book.
The book is filled with all kinds of paranormal approaches, irrelevant references ( the one where you are told to compare the reading section with the tale of a thief who robs banks???)
On the other side, there are some things to consider : three almost realistic tests with an experimental section, some hard math questions well worth passing through ( though I noted some errors in giving the right answer...)and excellent reading passages.
Yet I cannot help not being haunted by that famous Joe Bloggs whenever I open this book so...Try the College Board book instead.
passing the sat test.......2007-06-08
MY GRANDSON WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE TEST AND THE BOOK REALLY HELPED HIM PASS THE TEST.
Math questions are NOT representative.......2007-01-19
I am an SAT tutor and instructor (with my own company) with over 9 years' experience, and I used this book recently in a 3-session SAT refresher course that took place just before the October 2006 SAT. The students improved overall in the Critical Reading section, but they actually DROPPED in their Math scores on average (the students had fairly high Math scores at the start). I had used Math questions exclusively from this book as review, and I will never make the same mistake again. The book, and Princeton Review in general, does not have a good grasp of the style and "flavor" of actual SAT Math questions. An experienced SAT tutor who has worked with the official and real SAT questions should be able to detect small, but important, differences in the Cracking the SAT Math questions as compared to official SAT questions. For one thing, the last few questions on a section are not tough enough, and they are a bit off in the style and emphasis on "question types." The Math coverage and questions are probably good enough for a student scoring below 550 on the Math section, but I would hesitate to recommend them to any students scoring 550 or higher on Math. On the other hand, the Critical Reading and Writing sections are probably strong enough for students of almost all levels. As for the claim from one reviewer that the practice tests in this book are "extremely accurate" and preferable to those in the Official SAT Study Guide, I would have to STRONGLY disagree with that assertion. I've already stated that the Math questions are not representative, but readers should know that the Critical Reading questions, while fairly representative, contain some blatant (and sometimes subtle) errors in the answer choices and stated correct answers. For good practice alone, stick with the Official SAT Study Guide and the College Board Official SAT Online Course.
author does not know grammar.......2007-01-15
My 16-year-old son ordered this book. I took a quick look at it today and found two mistakes on the first page I checked, page 295, question 3. The author insists that "none" always requires a plural verb, but all the best usage manuals (Fowler, Follett, Garner, even the OED) say that it may be singular or plural, with plural being more common. The sense is clearly plural, not singular in question 3 ("none of the fish are native"). Also, in question 4, who in the world would ever use "you and me" instead of "us"? Why is someone who is tone-deaf to his own language trying to teach it to students? I want my money back.
Joe Blog approach.......2007-01-15
Princeton Review challenges the ETS (the test's creator) party line on prepping and coaching. By studying patterns in the ETS answer choices and question sequences, Princeton Review came up with what it calls the Joe Blog approach. At its core, Joe Blog says that on easy questions, go for the obvious answer that Joe Blog (a hypothetical Joe-Average) would guess; on the hard ones, avoid the "obvious answers, because they are "tricks" to fool Joe Blog. Even for top scorers, the Joe Blog techniques could add points by increasing the odds of successfully making educated guesses on the toughest questions. Moreover, the Princeton Review writers do provide excellent practice beyond the Joe Blog approach. They seem to have studied the content of the test better than most authors. If there is one flaw, it is that the explanations to the practice questions need a lot of work.
While not perfectfor everyone, this book is still an important and helpful resource. I do recommend this book overall.

Good for Laughs, Not for Practice.......2007-05-30
This book's review is great and actually had me laughing out loud in my school's library. The list of rhetorical devices and such was very helpful.
However, if you need a book to practice, this is NOT the book for you. The multiple choice in the practice tests were NOTHING like the real AP.
Buy it for the review, but for practice tests, try something else.

school required purchase.......2007-08-23
The high school required the purchase of this book for the AP Chemistry class. I was pleased it was so easily accessible and used copies were available. The school year just began, I am sure it must be a good source of help for the students since the teacher is requiring it at the beginning of the year.
Great review book.......2007-07-27
This book covers almost all topics you'll see on the actual test. And it really helps if you need an overall review just before the test.
However, it didn't cover much on the Organic and Nuclear chemistry. Well, even though these two topics are not emphasized(about 5 MC), you really need to go over them if you really want a 5 on the test.
And, do every question(including the free response questions).
Be confident, the actual test will be easier than you have thought.
cracking the ap chemistry exam.......2007-06-12
The book was written in - in PEN! All the answers ! It made for a waste of time and money to get a book you could not use as a study tool.
A Very Concise Review Book.......2007-05-23
This review book has been really helpful in preparaing me for the AP Chem exam. Unlike other review books, this book does not include a whole lot of review information. This is good because when you review, too much conceptual reviews can actually hinder the review process, something that Baron review books tend to do very much. In addition, the problems on the back of every section are very useful, although it's actually a little harder than the actual problems on the exam. Overall, this book has been very helpful.
AP Chemistry .......2007-05-14
This book is an excellent review source for the AP Chemistry exam. I was very satisfied with the material. The only problem noted was that the free response section of the review is not in the current format of the test. The material, however, is relevant. Would highly recommend this book!

This book got me a 5!.......2007-09-16
I tried Barrons, Kaplan's, and this one and Cracking the AP World History is probably the best study guide for AP World History.
During the whole year, I learned nothing from my AP World History class. Two weeks before the test, the only thing I did to review for the AP World History exam was read this book along with Kaplan's AP world history guide and I received a 5! After the test, I was hoping for at least a 3 and I got a 5 all thanks to this book! The review material in this book isn't as detailed a Barron's, it's just right so I didn't take too long to get through the whole book.
I would also recommend buying Kaplan's if you want to sharpen up your DBQ skills...but in my opinion, this one is the best.
I GOT A FIVE!!!!.......2007-09-01
well this book isn't that hard of a read. i was so stressed before and after this test. don't be. it's actually not that bad. go with your gut because you don't have the time to second guess and as by my suprise i thought i was going to recieve a two or three on the exam and i got a 5! but do study it is key!
BEST BOOK EVER.......2007-06-09
I was out for 15 weeks last year so I taught myself the whole course in a week (I was really bored). It tells you what you need to know, the practice tests are harder than what is on the real AP (which is good) and I think I got a 5 on the exam (I really knew what I was doing). My reccomendations: Take Practice Test 14 BUT DON'T WRITE IN THE BOOK. See how you do. Then go over everything start to finish and take Test 2. You should get a 50/70 if you want a 5. Bad things: Explains the essay's in an impossible way. Use your teacher to explain it.
Confusing?.......2007-05-16
I have to say, the book really does give vary valueble information when it comes to how to execute the multiple choice section of the AP exam, but when it comes to instructions for the dbg, compare and contrast, and for the change over time, It is hard to get individual infor out of the book. The only examples of DBQ's in the prep section on dbqs consists of dbqs they tried to make into compare and contrast questions. Also, they should be a little more up front abotu what you have to do, and make sure there is some seperation when it comes to knowing what you have to do for each seperate essay. It also does a vary bad job of explaining the importance of grouping when it comes to the dbq. But the cover is water resistent. My friend spilled water on it and nothing bad happend.
BURN IN HELL AP WORLD HISTORY!.......2007-05-15
This book makes me want to throw myself off the l'Arc de Triumph (oohh, the book loves to talk about the French Revolution, "Let them eat cake!" and all that malarckey!!!), then bring myself back to life just to drown myself in the Nile (which is also covered in this book, oooh the longest river in the world, WHO FRIGGING CARES!!!!!) and have it all videotaped and sent to the publishers of this book to show them what a dreadful mistake the World History exam really is!
Otherwise, a helpful study guide for your exam.
No hard feelings to you, PR Cracking the AP World History Exam 2006-2007 Edition, it's just the actual exam deserves to die.
With love,

The Book That Gives Hope.......2007-09-16
First let me start off with a background. I was a junior when I bought this book and I was barely pulling C to C+ in my AP Biology Class. The Class seemed standard and the teacher was great. My problem was that, as interesting as biology was, I found it hard just to memorize so many things in such a short period of time ( The textbook was 2000+ pages!)
The time to take the AP test came and I needed to review. I was starting to look for more of a 3-4 then the 5 i wanted. I bought this book in hopes of just passing the test. Well this book did that and much more. What this book has to offer is tremendously useful. After taking the test, I saw that this book went over just the things that were the MOST important topics of the exam ( about 60% of the AP biology topics take up 80-90% of the exam).
This book goes into detail on the important topics which is split up into chapters. After each chapter is a chapter review test which helped you remember each topic in a very strategic way. It sound pretty typical but they way the book is constructed helps you remember TREMENDOUS amounts of information in its relatively short review section ( roughly 3/4 of the book the last 1/4 is a Practice Test)
I was pulling a C in the class but I managed to get a 5 on the AP Biology test. Just think about what wonders it can do for you. I bought the other CliffsAP review book and that one turned out to be pretty much useless to me. I highly recomend this book if it is the only book you can afford to buy for this Class.
NOT WORTH IT!!!! GET CLIFFS .......2007-06-15
Princeton Review claims to be the mecca of test prep! Well I WOULD CERTAINLY DISAGREE WITH THAT CLAIM BASED ON THIS BOOK! It over summarizes everything + while the pictures and diagrams look nice and all they aren't gonna get you that 3, 4, or 5!!! I mean sure the overall summary of the concepts is correct but the AP exam is really tough.... i know because i just took it!.... and they will expect you to know everything in a great level of detail!!! Especially with the labs.... This book summarizes each lab in 1 paragraph... ha!!! Cliffs does pgs. for each one + tells you exactly what ETS wants! Also the test questions and practice look nothing like the AP
IF YOU WANT TO DO WELL STOP + GO TO WHERE YOU CAN BUY CLIFFS!!!
This book isn't going to help you at all! Spend your money on something better!.......2007-06-12
I agree with everyone who says this review book is TRASH. Honestly, it has so little necessary information for the exam, that you could've just taken the exam without ever studying. I just thank God that I used a Barron's in conjunction with this book. The Barron's makes complicated concepts so easy that a caveman could understand them. Not only that, but it goes into detail and highlights key concepts that you'll need to know for the exam, unlike the Princeton Review. This book does have practice tests, which are always good to do, but that's about it. If I recall correctly, the book has about a page on the Immune system. A PAGE!!! Barron's on the other hand had around 10. Seriously, this book does close to nothing in giving information essential to doing well on the exam.
So, to summarize everything I just said, Princeton Review is horrible and I'll never use another review book by them again, AND go with either a Barron's or Cliff's because they actually know what they're talking about and will prepare you for the exam.
Great Book!.......2007-06-03
To do well on the AP test, you can't depend completely on this book. you should also take a comprehensive AP Bio course during high school. It is best to use this book through out the school year along with your Bio class materials. If you know everything on this book, you will definitely do well on the multiply choice portion of the test. However, if you did not use another AP Bio textbook and depended completely on this book, you might not do as well on the essay portion. For example, this book does not cover the different kinds of biotechnologies really in detail. But on the 2000(I don't remember the year exactly) AP Bio test, one of the essay questions asked you to talk about several biotechnology tecniques (such as PCR, southern blotting etc.). Overall, this is very good book. The wording is very easy to understand and straightforward. It is not boring to read this book (unlike some of the other ap bio prep book, such as barron's) and the book tells you everthing you need to know (for multiple choice portion). Another thing I strongly recommend for studying ap bio test is McGraw-Hill's Biology Essential Study Partner. I think this program can be found online (like in google). This program accompany the biology textbook by Raven (but you don't need to read the textbook to use this program). I am pretty sure you will get a 5 on the ap bio test if you studied everything on Essential Study Partner and Princeton Review's Ap Biology.
The Perfect Review Book.......2007-05-16
This book drew the line at what I actually needed to know and what was unimportant for the AP Test. I feel that it helped me review all the major points and really contributed to my performance on the exam.

Very useful are the "comparable colleges" section which begins with the banner "Applicants Also Look At" and the "Survey Says" section.
Great way to start.......2007-07-13
This book is a great way to start the college search. My kids liked it since the basic facts for each college appear on two pages, quick and easy stats to review.
Huge disappointment compared to the 2005 edition !.......2007-07-11
I saw the 2005 edition of this guide at one of the colleges we visited and really liked it. So I bought it. However the new 2007 edition is so much tamer and more politically correct than the earlier one that it is much more boring and much less helpful than the 2005 version. The student comments have been totally watered down and the star ratings are gone.
Bottom line: you're much better off getting your hands on a used copy of the 2005 edition (which is called The best 357 Colleges).
Book Description
From the Internet to networks of friendship, disease transmission, and even terrorism, the concept--and the reality--of networks has come to pervade modern society. But what exactly is a network? What different types of networks are there? Why are they interesting, and what can they tell us? In recent years, scientists from a range of fields--including mathematics, physics, computer science, sociology, and biology--have been pursuing these questions and building a new "science of networks." This book brings together for the first time a set of seminal articles representing research from across these disciplines. It is an ideal sourcebook for the key research in this fast-growing field.
The book is organized into four sections, each preceded by an editors' introduction summarizing its contents and general theme. The first section sets the stage by discussing some of the historical antecedents of contemporary research in the area. From there the book moves to the empirical side of the science of networks before turning to the foundational modeling ideas that have been the focus of much subsequent activity. The book closes by taking the reader to the cutting edge of network science--the relationship between network structure and system dynamics. From network robustness to the spread of disease, this section offers a potpourri of topics on this rapidly expanding frontier of the new science.
