Better than an owners manual.......2007-08-13
This book is better than an owners manual for cs2, taking you through step by step instructions, if you already know something just skip that section, if you don't then it works, and it's easy to understand. The pages are color coded, great index and it has lots of picture examples.
must-have for photographers.......2007-05-30
i would recommend this book to anyone who is a photographer or thinking about taking up photography as a hobby. it's an amazing book and has very nice tutorials. i've been using it for about a year now. the price is very nice too.
Lots Of "Eureka" Moments Here.......2007-05-29
I've taken an abbreviated Photoshop class only to leave with more questions than answers. Fortunately, our teacher appreciated this fact and recommended this book to all the photographers in her class. I have not been disappointed except for lacking the time to work my way through this massive tome. Every time I open this book I discover another wonderful timesaver or neat trick to improve my photographs.
As good as it gets.......2007-05-14
Even more than I could expect! This book is intended to teach digital photography with Photoshop to make your photos get a new level that you could never imagine before. But if you want to learn the camera or tips to make your photos better without using your computer this is not what your need. One plus is file format explanations. And if you want to get muscle, this book is perfect for you too; because it's made with the best paper I saw in a book with photo quality in all pages the weight is a ton.
Good formatting.......2007-04-10
Besides being a good book about CS2 I really like the color coded chapter edge tabs. Frequently, it is the little things that make a difference.

Wes Howell's take on Adobe Encore........2007-08-08
My viewpoint on software books is predicated on my lack of schooling in computer software; with that in mind you know I'm hard to please, especially with a big program like Encore to work with. Howell's book is a general introduction to Encore, and as such misses the point. For example, my interest in Encore revolves about Manual Slide Shows---and Howell doesn't even mention this technique. Apparently I have reached the point in my working with Encore that I need more specific information, which I suspect many others working with Encore also need. In the above context two much better books areThe Focal Easy Guide to Adobe ® Encore DVD 2.0 (The Focal Easy Guide), and the Adobe Encore DVD 2.0 User Guide, which ships with Encore and isn't sold as a stand alone text, for whatever reason. I have a collection of 6 Encore instruction books and I would put Howell's book below the above referenced books.
What I would like to see is some sort of technical "cook book", wherein a person could look at experienced people's favorite routines and comments.
It worked for me.......2006-02-15
I've already done some very basic authoring in Encore and wanted to add motion menus to my repertoire. I also wanted to learn more about encoding for DVD and how Encore integrates with Photoshop and After Effects. While I haven't read any other books on the topic, I think this book is a great starting place.
I do agree that there's some confusion where Encore 1.5 is concerned, however that didn't stop me from enjoying/using the book. I found that by reading the whole book from front to back I was able to easily follow along and correct any minor discrepancies that came along. I also agree with the reviewer who said that the updated material was not on the website. The author does provide tutorials on the site and they may be more up to date, but he never provides any correction to the published content, at least not that I could find. This was not a deal breaker for me, but absolutely could cause a headache for someone with little or no experience with Adobe products. (When I first started using Encore, I had the same problem with the default menu too.)
All in all I found this to be an excellent "missing manual" for Encore. I've referred back to it several times for a quick answer and was able to find exactly the information I was looking for quickly and easily. I think the book it thorough enough to take you from zero to making a killer DVD without a problem. My two cents... If you want to learn Photoshop, Premier or After Effects, buy a book on that topic. If you want to learn about authoring a DVD with Encore and how to make it play with those other programs, this is the one for you. Thumbs up.
Adobe Encore DVD 1.5 not supported as promised.......2005-03-24
I regret buying this book. The cover has a big sticky stating see his website for updates to Encore 1.5, but there is nothing there. I am following the first tutorial in chapter 4, and page 108, step 12 says "choose menu>new menu..... keep the black background for now.... Well my menu is not black, but is an NTSC_Radiant Menu with 6 chapter buttons already on it.It apppears Encore version 1.5 differs from 1.0 in this regard. In addition Tutorial.mpg length in time doesn't match what is depicted in the book, consequently GOP's occur at different times. MPEG requires Chapter points to be at GOP's. I find this misleading in that it doesn't follow his directives. I thought I could just do the tutorials and whizz bang be done, but this book is more trouble than it's worth. I wasted my money
Reads like a page turner novel.......2004-12-18
I'm dutch. No good books in dutch hence the US language. I'm a novice to DVD authoring and I needed to jump start my knowledge.
I could understand this WITHOUT the software in front of me. It doesn't get easier. It saves a lot of time and prevents you from making those early mistakes. Big bang for a (cheap, vs euro) buck
Covers the essentials, then digs a bit deeper.......2004-05-11
As a reasonably experienced DVD author, I just wanted to get up to speed quickly and see how Encore relates to the DVD spec. I have been trying to get a handle on button highlights and how to use them creatively. Understanding what they are and how to use them with motion video has taken my projects to a new level. The book was already worth the money, 350 pages, and a DVD with an hour of free advanced video tutorials is included. The advanced topics and integration principles alone make this a solid purchase. Highly Recommended!!

Customer Reviews:
Useless for the beginner- not recommended.......2006-06-13
This book is a complete and utter disappointment. Nothing is explained well, you are just told to "do this" and then "do that".
Typos everywhere as well, and in the places where you really don't want to have typos- the instructions. Many of the things you are told to do are just flat out wrong- leading to extreme confusion and frustration in the various project steps. I had to give up on this book because the examples don't even work when you follow the directions. That and I absolutely hate those Ellen and Zak kids, the examples in every chapter.
BUT I did find a great book that I recommend 100% for people new to Flash. I was comfortable with Flash animation after working through the first couple of chapters in "Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Hands on Training" by Yeung and Weinman. I recommend that book extremely highly, and I recommend you search it out and buy it immediately. Forget about this other crummy book.
Good examples with clear comments - easy to apply.......2004-10-14
Hi, I do not have time to sit and go through code line by line. I want to plug the functionality straight into my current project. The commenting and standalone nature of the examples means this is ideal for the professional.
Need Lots of Proofreading.......2004-10-06
I am so disappointed with this book. From Chapter 1, it refers in its exercises to files which do not exist and the files which do exist are already completed when the exercises refer to it being the starting point. I echo the other reviewer's comments, "what's the point of it if it's already completed?" Alex Michael should take a page from the Lynda Weinman's series, and writer Rosanna Yeung's detailed yet, easy to follow and well-illustrated book, "Flash MX 2004 Hands-on Training". What a waste of money for "Animating with Flash MX". I'm better off creating my own exercises for my students instead of using this book as my text.
Less technique rather plug-n-play.......2004-02-02
The techniques in this book are extremely basic as well as superficial. There is very little "how or why" a technique (or script) is being used, which prevents you from customizing the examples for your own use beyond replacing the graphics with your own. There are many spelling and other grammatical errors. For instance, the error "optimisation" (should be "optimization") is found throughout the book. I was disappointed with this purchase quite a bit.
This is an amazing book.......2003-11-12
The first real computer book that looks at animation. It is well written, and delivers information in a very straight-forward way. But most of the front part of the book is very basic stuff. You have to read on to get into the guts of the world of professional animation. If using Flash MX for professional development, this is a must have. If you are just beginning, this is also a great book.
The tutorials were easy and results were rewarding.
I have already, within a week tested my animation on a PDA (PocketPC), video, web, the only one I have still to do is interactive TV. I give this book top marks.

Terrific Digital Printmaking Book.......2002-09-18
While searching out another photography book, I stumbled upon this one and bought it on a whim. What a revelation! I am totally thrilled with the book, the authors' writing, and the info - both aesthetic and concrete - inside. I've had several print b/w darkrooms - bathroom affairs that I've loved - but no longer have the space. I really have missed the print-making experience. Thus Creative Digital Printmaking opened new and exciting doors to me. Even better, it clearly explained how to handcolor digiprints, something I'd done with my b/w images, but never imagined I could do with a digital print.
The book's instructions and explanations are masterful - clear and concise, yet full of exciting techniques. While the book takes the reader on interesting creative journeys, Airey also focuses on the concrete, such as how to calibrate a monitor and the best way to scan a negative or photograph. The combination works. So do the excellent photographic examples. If you have the urge to make digital prints that last and ones that resonate with and excite viewers, this book will guide you on your way. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Practical and inspiring.......2002-02-18
You can spend weeks following web users groups that discuss specific papers, inks, printers and combinations of archival inks and papers etc. You can subscribe to numerous artists' magazines. But in this book, you can save yourself months, because of Theresa Airey's practical information and lists. The book not only helps photographers looking for quality in printing but it also gives people who hand tint photos good advice with the current lineup of digital materials. From the applications standpoint, I like that this book takes readers from basics to difficult, creative projects. The listings for companies, websites, papers and other media are excellent. To Amphoto Books: Please give us more from this talented and extraordinarily helpful author.
BASIC Digital Printmaking.......2001-12-08
BASIC Digital Printmaking -That should be the title of this book. Perhaps for the amateur photographer who is unfamiliar with basic digital processes. There is so much more that can be done, missed completely by this book.
The book is filled with cheezy Photoshop effects equal to those "star" filters back in the 70's. cheezy, cheezy, cheezy...
Informative & Enjoyable.......2001-11-27
For those who endeavor to perfect fine art digital printmaking, this is the book to read. It is a "how to" and so much more. The book covers paper, ink, techniques, hand coloring and the practical application and intereaction of all of these variables. The book is cogently written and elegantly displayed. It is a must for anyone's library who wishes to expand their horizons in the digital printing arena. Ms. Airey is a master of her craft and it shows.

Customer Reviews:
The most focusted and useful book on the subject!.......2002-05-12
Without a doubt this book is the most user friendly book on technology I've read. It is packed with essential information for everone using digital photography today. It provides help in setting up shots as well as streamling your workflow and a lot more. There is nothing extraneous out this, it's great from start to finish!
DPFGD will be dog-eared before you know it!.......2002-02-16
This book is a must-have for designers and photographers who are moving towards a fully digital production process. DPFGD is a well-organized linear treatment and full of extremely useful guidance relevant to both the broad creative issues and nitty gritty details that we face in our profession. Varis is precise, clear, experienced, and is well backed up by artfully selected examples on every page. This is one book that I expect to look back to again and again.
Great for the Design Student.......2001-12-13
Just fininshed reading Lee Varis's new book. It's a great overall treatment of digital photography for any student of graphic design or even the seasoned art director that may be new to digital technology. The technology discussed is current, and in common use professionally. The discussions of critical concepts of resolution and color are presented in a user friendly, easy to grasp manner.
This book should well prepare the designer going into their first digital photoshoot. It can help in understanding how to achieve all the technology is capable of, and how to get the most from the shoot.
Digital Photography for Graphic Designers.......2001-12-12
This is a must have book for designers and photographers, especially designers of the old school who have been more then a little afraid of going digital and there are many out there. For the beginer designer, this book puts on the page what they will be told about the digital work flow as it exists today.
Lee Varis takes the reader on a digital ride explaining more then enough to get the reader to appreciate the digital workflow.
A must for designers.......2001-12-12
Even though there are many books as there are about digital imaging, none discuss in detail the relationship of designers and art directors with the process (and people) involved with creating digital images.
This book covers a great many of the complexities of digital imaging with a clear, casual style that does a great deal towards clearing up many misconceptions people have about digital photography. Not only does it cover that, but the book goes further into aspects such as pre-press, proofing, editing and printing, and and does so with a very enjoyable, non-technical narrative. Anecdotal writing, along with supporting photography (beautifully printed) helps lend creedence to this book. A necessary text for anyone in graphic design and/or advertising.
