Great!.......2007-04-22
This book is soo cool. My friends and I have a ball reading this book. It has great content
Great for Beginners.......2007-04-18
This book was very helpful. When in doubt I turn to reading and I was completely clueless on how to please a man orally. I had no idea what to do before I read this book. I'm surprized my boyfriend put up with me feeble atempts, after learning how to perform correctly. I know he greatly appreciated this bit of literature, even though he laughed when I first recieved it in the mail.
I'd say it's an excellent book for beginners, and help me get the basics down real quick. Although if your looking for something more advance, I would probably try a different book.
Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2007-03-26
I found this book to be really fun!
This book has fun and flirty illustrations throughout. I found it to be rich with quick tidbits that are called Sadie Sez they are neat to read. This book covers anything you need to know head to toe to please your man! It even has backdoor play and helps your relationship open new erotic doors. It will help with lube choices and fun cute names for different techniques she describes them in full detail and pictures! Tickle His Pickle by Sadie Allison is amazing and will even cover impotence in men and give us (the partner) "help" in deciding how to "help" him through it wink wink nudge nudge. As well as being a nice quick read it is a small book so you can fit in your carry on luggage or purse even a backpack. I would highly recommend this book to every type of couple or non couple. She has a few safe sex ideas thrown about in the book. (As her little friendly reminder). High quality material covered in this book. Tickle His Pickle written by Sadie Allison is not for someone without a funny bone (it will make you giggle at her creative take on the male anatomy)! I bought another copy to give away to my friend! Worth every penny I spent to buy this! Just a little recommendation check out her other books she is a spectacular author! Just type in her name and pow books written by her. Enjoy!

The Absolute #1 Bestseller in 6 Very Competitive Categories for 20 Straight Months!
Leading scientist and best-selling author at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com reveals the results and scientific breakthroughs from 110 landmark clinical studies, and 10 years of dedicated work, which guarantee that you will always have massive "steel erection", full ejaculation control, great endurance and multiple orgasms due to The VIP Muscle(R) in the safest, fastest, easiest and cheapest possible ways.
Hello, I am Alan Ritz.
If you are like most of my friends, you may be searching for the
perfect blend of science-based recommendations and simple step-by-step plans for fast and effortless achievement of better erection, performance and multiple orgasms. If you become increasingly discouraged in the search for simple, safe and clinically proven approaches, my
"very good book" J. Gilbert, ForeWordreviews.com reveals all scientifically guaranteed methods and solutions.
The book contains
everything you will ever need to know and use. Discover step-by-step how to achieve and maintain for the rest of your life significant stamina, hardness, ejaculation control and volume, sensitivity, libido and number of multi-orgasms with or without a partner. The recommendations are fool-proof. You
don't have to learn or practice any exercises as most of the similar books require. What is more, all of my competitors use "may" when talking about the results. Save weeks and even months of workouts and dieting for
not guaranteed results.
Take advantage of
my breakthrough discovery- The VIP Muscle(R), which is the real generator of male multiple orgasms. It takes
less than 15 seconds to find it and any sexually healthy man can use it for multi-orgasms in a matter of days. Experience daily this
exclusive euphoric pleasure very few men know about. Achieve the ultimate in multi-orgasmic (solo) sex quickly and effortlessly.
Avoid contracting the PC muscle (located below the testicles) or manually stimulating your prostate gland as other authors recommend because this leads to hyperactivation of the executive ejaculation nerves in your genitals.
This causes/worsens premature ejaculation in the long term! You may try it for yourself and then come back to me for the
safe alternative- the VIP Muscle. What is more, the latest published clinical studies point that premature ejaculation is usually caused by overproduction of the stress hormone Adrenalin. The other common reason is inflamed/enlarged prostate, which is also addressed in my book. All of my competitors still recommend outdated mechanical exercises, although it is well known today that this is exclusively a biochemical/internal problem, which is the fastest and easiest to solve out of several discussed in my book. Discover also why erectile dysfunction/impotence occurs and what its natural, simple and permanent solutions are.
Ladies, you can secretly help your men with the "stealth" advice from the book.
90% of the discussed supplements are
undetectable. Easily find out from simple questions and answers how to diagnose and eliminate his deficiencies
even in 72 hours. You may select between common food sources or very affordable, safe and undetectable supplements, which are available everywhere. He will need a multi vitamin and mineral formula as well as one little-known supplement for one area for improvement. My objective is to show you how to achieve maximum results with minimum investment.
Significantly improve his sexual health and overall performance in bed to get every time the quality and quantity of sex you want in order to be
very satisfied. Thus, you will both enjoy a healthier and stronger relationship and better sex.
The book provides
the latest, crucial research for men of all ages, including teenagers. I have recommended science-based ejaculation frequency for each age group to
prevent overejaculations. They lead to more than 24 major health problems, incurable by medical doctors, which seriously undermine their sexual life. The list includes premature ejaculation, anxiety, emotional eating, aggressive/depressed behavior, low back pain, lack of libido and power, dizziness, hot flashes, blurry vision, etc. They are usually caused by deficiencies of little-known substances in your biochemistry and nervous system. The book's content is focused mostly on them. You can solve naturally all of these problems for up to 100% with time by following the advice from the book.
More little-known information and solutions provides my "excellent" H. Froeschl, Bookreview.com, simple and very effective lifestyle program
Your Scientific Diet(R) for Men, which guarantees fast and permanent weight loss and natural prevention/solutions to obesity-related hypertension, impotence, and other challenges in the healthiest, cheapest and easiest possible ways. Your Scientific Diet(R) for Women was just released.
Discover how exactly popular "jelqing techniques", "penis enlargement devices", and "sex pills" will
severely harm your sexual health. Some of my competitors recommend them but I only expose them!
As a scientist, I stick to exact numbers, verifiable scientific data, clinically proven methods and guaranteed results. That's why all of the recommendations include only substances approved by the
US Food and Drug Administration, and the essence of
110 references to leading medical, urological and research journals. This guarantees
100% safety, reliability and credibility of the provided in some cases scientific breakthrough information.
I guide you step-by-step what, when and how to use. Thanks to feedback, I had anticipated most of the concerns and objections that may arise. The book is professionally edited and organized for fastest access to any part that interests you the most. There are also numerous step-by-step plans and examples from real people, including me as well. So rest assured that
everything is simple, enjoyable to read and easy to understand and follow. That's why you will never get stuck, especially when there is
nothing to learn or practice. Any apprehension from understanding science-based information will quickly disappear and you can benefit from it right from the first day. (continues below)

Practical and Results are Absolutely Amazing........2007-02-19
FABULOUS! Thank you Alan Ritz. Buy this book and carefully listen to the author following his recommendations I GUARANTEE you are going to likely have results. The book goes over a wide range of issues regarding enlargement, premature ejaculation, dysfuntion, impotenence, multiple orgasms and male sexual health. INcluding, addressing all the magic, uneffective potentially dangerous options that don't work and all the rhetoric sold bought into. I can't say enough good things about the book. This isn't just take a pill all your challenges resolved what have you. Pay close attention to the nutritional advice it's particularly helpful. I take my suppliments four times throughout the day all the way to evening. Do what I call conditioning exercises. Drink pleanty of fluids limiting my caffiene and be conscientious about what I eat. Can't emphasise enough to be patient with yourself really open up. And, to NOT overdo it on vitamins, minerals, ETC. Adequate amounts continuously, more isn't better. Alot of this is associated with one's degree of comfort. Along with this you might want to looking into learning a little bit of meditation to compliment or yoga type of material though, not necessarily that important depending on your individual sircumstance. Breathing that sort of thing. Lastly, knocking off smoking's would be considerably advantageous. All I can say is GET this book. Invest in following the recommendations making them a habit they're actually rather simple. Just making some adjustments brings results rather soon. Few if any men and relationships won't benefit. Look forward to reading his diet for healthful living! 5+ STARS***
6 STARS . . .how about 7?.......2006-08-19
This book is everything it is said to be. To know that there is an answer to ED other than the new ed pills should be talked about on the local news. I've only been following the advice in this book for a couple of weeks and can tell you that it helps return to (steel). How often remains to be seen. For the first time in my life I feel positive about finding a wife without having ED hanging over the relationship like a dark cloud.
I became a Sex God!.......2006-03-08
Wow, the results are INCREDIBLE! I needed just 4 days to increase my endurance from 15 minutes to 45+! You can hardly imagine what kind of confidence booster is that! My sensitivity was the first thing that dramatically increased within 48 hours and it’s great now! My erection is harder than ever and I am confident that it will gradually expand. I am sooooooooo excited, happy and proud of my brand new abilities and superior performance in bed. Women also notice that I have changed for better and are more willing to get out with me as well as to get laid more than ever. I can’t recommend this exceptional book enough!
Highly recommended!.......2006-03-08
This is the book for you, if you are looking for a 6-star guide with exclusive content based on many landmark and referenced scientific discoveries. Are they very important? Definitely yes because I have never thought that every aspect of my sexuality can improve so quickly, effortlessly and without spending a small fortune on little-known supplements which I found in my local drug store. This book is nothing but a blessing for every man and his partner. That’s why I urge you to give it a try.
"VIP", hands-free, multi-orgasmic ecstasy every time!.......2006-03-08
Hi everyone. I also came back to support this incredible book because it delivers what it promises and my sexual life has improved so much. My favorite part is the breakthrough "VIP muscle" and multiple orgasms. I have always strived to be on top as well as to be the active partner. Well, not any more. Ritz is right by saying that the "Mountain Peaks position" allows the best and strongest orgasms. I simply have to lay on my back so my tigress can jump on me and synchronize the contractions of my VIP muscle with her movements for hands-free, mind blowing, multi-orgasmic pleasure!
She is so happy that I don't insist any more to be on top most of the time and both of us have really "ultimate sex" every time. I'm so happy and proud to have a copy. The best part is that I still have more than half of the suggestions to try out because they are so many and all of them are incredible! Get a copy and see for yourself.

Book Description
This book contains no nudity. No profanity. No sexual material of any kind. And yet it just might be the most obscene thing we've ever published!
Penis Pokey is an illustrated board book with a large die-cut hole in its center. Every spread features a dazzling full-color illustration with one thing missing a banana, perhaps, or a fire hose, or a sea serpent. Male readers can complete the illustrations using the talents God has given them.
Are we serious? Yes! Is this funny? Absolutely! Will this be a terrific hit with college students, bachelorette parties, and exhibitionists of all ages? Of course! Penis Pokey is far and away the strangest and funniest novelty book we've seen in a long, long time.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth it, but don't buy used.......2007-08-18
I intended to read this to a friend, but was so "excited" to be reading that I was unable to fit my pop-up into the hole. So, I made him read it to me instead. We both enjoyed it a lot!
This is "One size fits most", but if it doesn't fit you, congrats! I hope it gives your ego the same boost that I got!
Adult fun for the kid in you!!.......2007-01-25
Reminiscent of the board books of yore, in which your fingers stood in for dancing balerinas or firemen, but updated for the age you are now (wiener cowboys anyone?). One look at the cover will give you the idea, but looking inside will nearly make you pee your pants laughing. A great gift for those you don't know what to get. Sized for even the largest contributor, and secretly funny to even the most uptight.
My only regrets are:
A. I didn't think of it first
and
B. Someone is bound to sue me if I do a photo shoot featuring this product
A great buy
Made the soldiers laugh.......2006-12-15
I sent this to my son who is in the Army in Iraq. He got it today and emailed me that it was quite the hit in his group. They all really laughed. They need things to make them laugh over there... last he heard, someone was running over to the chow hall to try and find a banana... I guess you can only go so far, even in the Army!
suggestion.......2006-11-11
I think it would not be a good idea to economize by buying a used copy of this book.
Great Bedtime Book.......2006-11-10
This book will make you laugh and perhaps even shed a few tears! Hilarious! Mr. Behrens, we can hardly wait to see what you come up with next!

David M. Friedman's A Mind of Its Own is a cultural examination of the penis, from ancient Sumer to the present. Friedman convincingly suggests that humankind's various and contradictory attitudes toward the penis have been instrumental in mapping the course of both Western civilization and world history.
Friedman begins with pagan attitudes: ancient Greeks considered the penis a measure of a man's proximity to "divine power," while the Romans, whose generals were known to promote soldiers based on penis size, saw it as an indicator of earthly strength. Thanks to the spread of Christianity, the "sacred staff became the demon rod"--a fearful manifestation of the devil. Theology gave way, grudgingly, to science. In the Renaissance, anatomical discoveries allowed for the possibility that this "agent of death" was, in fact, only a "blameless instrument of reproduction." Subsequent chapters discuss the penis's role as a racial yardstick; its "defining role in human personality" as asserted by Freud; its politicization; and finally, through the likes of Viagra, its objectification as a "thing ... impervious to religious teachings, psychological insights, racial stereotypes and feminist criticism."
Friedman's study of what he calls the "symbolic muscle" is filled with fascinating side trips (castration cults, ancient graffiti, the anti-masturbation "semen-retention movement," aphrodisiacs through the ages, and, to modern eyes, risible medical practices with the likes of monkey glands), as well as a rich cast of characters (Leonardo da Vinci, John Kellogg of cornflake fame, Kate Millet, Clarence Thomas, and Walt Whitman). The book is informal, but well researched (and documented), entertaining but not cute, wide-ranging but not sketchy, and simultaneously irreverent and respectful. --H. O'Billovitch
Book Description
Whether enemy or ally, demon or god, the source of satisfaction or the root of all earthly troubles, the penis has forced humanity to wrestle with its enduring mysteries. Here, in an enlightening and entertaining cultural study, is a book that gives context to the central role of the penis in Western civilization.
A man can hold his manhood in his hand, but who is really gripping whom? Is the penis the best in man -- or the beast? How is man supposed to use it? And when does that use become abuse? Of all the bodily organs, only the penis forces man to confront such contradictions: something insistent yet reluctant, a tool that creates but also destroys, a part of the body that often seems apart from the body. This is the conundrum that makes the penis both hero and villain in a drama that shapes every man -- and mankind along with it.
In A Mind of Its Own, David M. Friedman shows that the penis is more than a body part. It is an idea, a conceptual but flesh-and-blood measuring stick of man's place in the world. That men have a penis is a scientific fact; how they think about it, feel about it, and use it is not. It is possible to identify the key moments in Western history when a new idea of the penis addressed the larger mystery of man's relationship with it and changed forever the way that organ was conceived of and put to use. A Mind of Its Own brilliantly distills this complex and largely unexamined story.
Deified by the pagan cultures of the ancient world and demonized by the early Roman church, the organ was later secularized by pioneering anatomists such as Leonardo da Vinci. After being measured "scientifically" in an effort to subjugate some races while elevating others, the organ was psychoanalyzed by Sigmund Freud. As a result, the penis assumed a paradigmatic role in psychology -- whether the patient was equipped with the organ or envied those who were. Now, after being politicized by feminism and exploited in countless ways by pop culture, the penis has been medicalized. As no one has before him, Friedman shows how the arrival of erection industry products such as Viagra is more than a health or business story. It is the latest -- and perhaps final -- chapter in one of the longest sagas in human history: the story of man's relationship with his penis.
A Mind of Its Own charts the vicissitudes of that relationship through its often amusing, occasionally alarming, and never boring course. With intellectual rigor and a healthy dose of wry humor, David M. Friedman serves up one of the most thought-provoking, significant, and readable cultural works in years.
Customer Reviews:
interesting historiography.......2007-02-22
*A Mind of Its Own* started off fantastic, opening with how witches were burned for having contact with the "devil's rod". However, the book's ending wasn't quite as great, concluding with impotence and Viagra.
Friedman presented how the penis was viewed, throughout history, through various lens: historical, social, religious, psychological, medical and feminist. My only problem with this book was that the last half was mostly medical (Freud, psychology, psychoanalysis, penile reconstruction, testicular transplants, impotence, etc.). So, the end became a little dry.
There were a lot of information and tidbits that I didn't know about the penis. I'm sure that we're familiar about the Greek and Roman's view on and culture around the penis. However, there are so much more to know about these people. The pagan and the religious views were interesting as well. It was amazing to see that the early Christians had numerous dialogues on the penis, especially the semen.
I was very interested in reading about the history of the correlation between penis size and race. This wasn't about how a race or an ethnic group have been stereotyped on their penis size. It was more about the white view of the black penis and how they responded to it.
The feminist view on the penis was enlightening. I've always wanted to know exactly how it started and it pretty much made sense. However, it was interesting to see how the penis have divided women among themselves, despite them being avowed feminists.
I think there are so much more that Friedman could have covered in the cultural history of the penis. I wish that Friedman had included the pop cultural view of the penis. I can only think of one example that Friedman did. He mentioned Robert Mapplethorne's (sp?) (who was gay) controversial photo of a semi-erect black penis. Speaking of gay, I'm surprised that Friedman didn't bring up the homosexual view of the penis.
Nonetheless, you're going to read about so many people who have made a contribution or an impact on the penis. Such people are Da Vinci, Thomas Clarence, Freud and so many more. If you've always been curious how the penis have been viewed throughout history, then this book is for you.
Wow!.......2006-08-15
I learned a whole lot about the history of the Penius that they don't tell you anywhere else! And I'm only in Chapter 2! Nicely written and easy to follow. Reads like a story rather than a weighty text book.
Got Penis?.......2004-01-30
Ok, those who get squeamish over penis need not apply here. This book is covered in it from cover to cover, and men and women alike will find this an interesting dissection of it. The author gives us a history lesson in the penis from ancient times to the current day erectile dysfunction boom. He focuses quite a bit on Mr. Frued, obviously for the fact that this man was penile fixed and injected his theories right into modern day psychology textbooks. I found the most interesting part regarding the racial penis, as it was a new look at racism in America and abroad.
I was a bit disappointed that the book didn't include much pop culture regarding the penis. However, the areas the author chose to look at were very appropriate and provided new insight on that organ both men and women find fascinating.
More Than Expected.......2003-10-20
I had seen this book on Amazon before and by-passed it, thinking that it would be little more than an anthology of dick stories, past and present. Do not make that mistake. This is a well-researched book that investigates the religious, scientific, racial, political and psychological dimensions - pun intended- of the penis throughout Western History, from Ancient Greece to Viagra. On the other hand, do not fret that it is a dry tome;the author presents the material in an entertaining manner with just the right amount of ribaldry. So interesting is the book that I read the entire 300+ pages in two sittings.
a wonderful and wonderfully thorough book.......2003-08-15
it's not often i pick up a non-fiction book as engrossing and entertaining as this one. it was like a novel i didn't want to put down until i finished it. friedman presents a wonderfully detailed overview of, as the title promises, the cultural history of the penis. this includes the place of the penis in religious history, freudian psychoanalysis, feminist theory, racism, and psychopharmacology. the author provides enough background and context that it's like reading a well-constructued primer on each of those subject areas. most highly recommended!

In Throwim Way Leg, Australia-based mammologist-raconteur Tim Flannery recalls scientific expeditions in the wilds of New Guinea that convey both the thrill of discovery and the negotiations necessary to bridge huge clashes of cultures. A world expert on New Guinea's fauna, Flannery has discovered 20 new species during his two decades of research. Yet his ability to convey unalloyed adventure in his taletelling makes these scientific expeditions read more like hair-raising, funky Redmond O'Hanlon-style travels than disciplined, scholarly field trips. Energy and danger run high.
Terrific thunderstorms and aircraft mishaps rattle Flannery during his travels. Yet the most memorable quality of Throwim Way Leg is Flannery's incorporation of humans into the natural world he writes about, often contrasting the jungled New Guinea denizens with stark modern technologies. He writes rich profiles of those he has met, and his images are memorable and meaningful: crowds of people gaping at a single television set; the remote landscape of Mt. Albert Edward dotted with cattle, Swiss chalets, and the smoky fires of the Goilala people; the malnourished Yapsiei greeting him reeking of the "sweet, sickly smell" of grile, a form of ringworm.
Ultimately, Flannery looks ahead and sees that the age of discovery is not at all complete in New Guinea, as so much remains unknown. But, in an often-told tale, modern political forces are at work, reshaping those unique natural and cultural environments that Throwim Way Leg explores with such vigor. --Byron Ricks
Book Description
Flannery travels to the unexplored regions of New Guinea in search of species that science has yet to discover or classify. He finds many -- from a community of giant cave bats that were supposedly extinct to the elusive black-and-white tree-kangaroo -- and along the way has a wealth of unforgettable adventures. Flannery scales cliffs, descends into caverns, and cheats death, both from disease and at the hands of the local cannibals, who wish to take revenge on his "clan" of wildlife scientists. He eventually befriends the tribespeople, who become companions in his quest and whose contributions to his research prove invaluable. In New Guinea pidgin, throwim way leg means to take the first step of a long journey. The journey in this book is a wild ride full of natural wonders and Flannery's trademark wit, a tour de force of travelogue, anthropology, and natural history.

Interesting story - biological and anthropological.......2006-08-20
Flannery is the Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Museum. This book recounts several of his expeditions in Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya in the 80s and 90s.
He's the opposite to Douglas Adams. In approaching some similar topics in his `Last Chance to See' Adams was primarily a writer. Flannery is primarily a biologist - the writing came second. Thus there's not the wit, and the style is often understated. In some cases this is quite charming as he pretty casually relates some harrowing incidents (such as getting stuck alone in an underground crevice). In contrast his vocabulary can get a bit ostentatious: he'll use always use a word like `ossuary', for example, rather than graveyard, and in one case he used a word I've forgotten now that from the context must mean something like overeating, but didn't even appear in my complete Macquarie dictionary. (Ah, another amazon reviewer had the same problem, although they were impressed by the obscure vocabulary, while I was unimpressed by same: 'farcarted' gets nothing from any online dictionaries - the only place it turns up in a google search is in these perplexed amazon reviews. Maybe it's an in-joke.)
These are exotic places and creatures, and Flannery capably recalls some real adventures. Part of the strange appeal of this book is shaking your head at some of the near-insane deprivations and risks his biological obsession has entailed (hence the insightful description of another reviewer, `bloody mad scientist'). Moreover half the fascination is anthropological. He generally does very well walking the line between eulogising and demonising the tribal Papuans. He ably conveys some of the dilemmas of contact between ancient and modern, such as the time when in all good faith he acceded to requests to sharpen all the knives in a village, but then was appalled to see several villagers accidentally cutting themselves deeply because they'd never had anything but blunt edges. He does tend towards the assumption that any loss of traditional culture is automatically bad, but honestly allows us to see some ugly things that challenge this assumption.
Towards the end of the book, as much to his chagrin as ours, we're not able to merely enjoy the excitement of discovery of species because of the context of ugly mistreatment of Irian nationals by their Indonesian conquerors. I got the feel that none of us wanted this to be a `political' book, particularly not a partisan one, but in telling his story it becomes unavoidable. Flannery again to his credit is very careful not to say `all Indonesians', or `all the mining company workers', but sadly his biological expeditions are somewhat overrun just at the end by encounters with some brutal racism, at times incidental, at others structural.
Amazing scientist, unexceptional writer........2006-05-16
Without a doubt Tim Flannery ranks with the world's greatest scientist/explorers. He has a wealth of fascinating and valuable tales to tell from his travels to New Guinea. However, the book has little coherent structure. It's just a series of (mostly) unrelated stories, like he might recount over dinner. The details of his trips are incredible, but by the time I was half way through, I began losing my interest and felt I was re-reading previous passages.
Breathtaking, humorous and poignant.......2004-09-09
Flannery is one of a kind. He is to New Guinea what Perry and Amundson are to the poles, a first-comer .... one of the first to explore and document the stone age peoples of the mysterious island wilderness in the last days of its age of innocence.
Yes, there are cannibals, with bones in their noses and gourds worn on their penis, yet Flannery somehow manages to get the reader to empathize with these people, to understand their foibles and traditions, and to feel regret that their ancient ways are going, going, gone ... forever. Take the chapter where he goes in pursuit of the Bulmer's Fruit Fly Bat -- you suffer with him the agonies of failure and the desperations of the search, and the exhilaration of success. Or follow along with his learning experiences among the native tribes and come to actually understand the hows and whys of the way the led their lives, even to discovering there were (to the natives) valid reasons for their rare acts of cannibalism.
Although he describes some of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world, the reader comes to know that Papua New Guinea will never rate very highly as a tourist destination, but you'll have to read this book to appreciate the reasons why.
Think you couldn't possibly be interested in such things? Try twenty pages of this charming book; the images will lived in your memory forever.
Hooroo, Tim! Bonzer yarn, mate!
Exciting and sometimes hilarous natural history book.......2003-05-26
I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful book! In it, mammalogist Tim Flannery regales us with tales from his many years in New Guinea, searching for new species of mammals on the island, the second largest in the world. A difficult island to work in - highly mountainous; extremely few roads, most villages so isolated that they can only be reached by small planes flying to landing strips hacked out of the jungle; parts of it some of the rainiest spots on earth, some areas receiving 11 meters or more of rain a year; possessing many dangerous animals ranging from crocodiles to snakes to huge spiders; tropical diseases and parasites a real problem in many areas (including malaria and scrub typhus, from which Flannery almost died from when bit by an infected tick) ý Flannery had his work cut out for them as he spent over two decades on the island, both in the eastern half, the independent nation of Papua New Guinea, and the western section, Irian Jaya, part of Indonesia.
Flannery is a highly accomplished scientist, having discovered 16 new species of mammals in Melanesia, many of them in New Guinea. Many of these and others are described in the book, and make for fascinating reading. We meet the Black-tailed Giant-rat, the bite from its two centimeter long razor sharp incisors much feared by the inhabitants of the island. The Three-striped Dasyure, a vividly marked rat-sized marsupial predator, one of New Guinea's few mammals active during daylight hours. The Snow Mountains Robin, one of the rarest birds in the world, found in the high alpine regions of the Meren Glacier in Irian Jaya, one of the very few equatorial glaciers in the world. _Antechinus, a small carnivorous marsupial notable in that the male only lives for 11 months, existing only to breed. The diminutive, dingo-like New Guinea singing dog, which arrived in the islands some 2,000 years ago. The six o'clock cicada, a tremendously loud insect that received its name from its trill it emits roughly 6am and 6pm daily. The famous Birds of Paradise, breathtaking in their beauty, several species of which are extremely rare. He also describes the Long-fingered Triok, a black and white skunk smelling possum with the fourth finger of each hand a great elongated probe for finding insect larvae; you never know what he is going to find next lurking in the barely explored misty peaks and dripping jungles of the island.
Three of the most remarkable animals are ones that Flannery discovered or in one case rediscovered. One is _Maokopia ronaldi_, an extinct marsupial herbivore that once dwelt in the high mountain forests. Panda-like in appearance, size, and probably habits, Flannery named this new genus and species from fossils he found in Irian Jaya. Bulmer's Fruit-bat, a bat though extinct for 12,000 years, the largest cave dwelling bat in the world, Flannery was elated to have found them alive in extremely rugged western Papua New Guinea. The one though that Flannery is the most proud of discovering was the Dingiso, a new species of tree-kangaroo he found in the alpine areas of Irian Jaya, a beautiful black and white animal, surprising tame, threatened but fortunately partially protected by native taboos against harming them.
However, as remarkable as all of that is, one could argue that the real stars of this book are the people of New Guinea, particularly the indigenous Melanesian peoples that Flannery spends a great deal of time with and clearly loves. Much of his time researching in the field he was based out of the villages of such people as the Wopkaimin, the Telefol, and the Goilala where he became fast friends with many throughout the island, in both countries, viewing them not as savage barbarians, but as noble, often quite kind people, their older generation vast repositories of cultural and natural history lore. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the books were the many stories about life in those villages, some of the tales tragic, others heartwarming, and many hilarious.
Particularly fascinating was what he wrote about the history of cannibalism on the island. Apparently it did exist in the not too distant past, actually in the living memory of some of the villagers he encountered. Though not an every day occurrence by any means, cannibalism was an important part of New Guinea life; indeed, one group Flannery spent some time with, the Miyanmin, were once avid raiders, and actually referred to the neighboring Atbalmin people as ýbokis es bilong miplea,ý which more or less translates into something like ýour refrigerator.ý Though cannibalism is now a thing of the past, its effects are still felt he writes, as villages once got some of their population from raids of other villages, the adults of that village were consumed and the children raised as their own; now, that is no longer a source of new people for villages and some are facing some depopulation as a result.
Flannery sounds several cautionary notes in his book. Several species of New Guinea mammals and birds are in serious danger of extinction from over hunting. Though New Guinea is still a land largely without roads, more and more appear all the time, opening up virgin lands for hunters, loggers, and miners. Indeed in Irian Jaya the latter two are devastating ever larger sections of the island; the massive Freeport mine, which exports over ten million dollars worth of minerals daily, has destroyed large sections of forest with waste mine tailings.
He also worries about the future of the people, particularly in Irian Jaya. He believes that in an attempt to make that land more like the rest of Indonesia it is causing not only environmental damage but also cultural damage. Indeed there are concerns over human rights abuses in Irian Jaya, of dissidents disappearing, of remote villagers forced to wear modern clothing and abandon their pig eating culture by distant Muslim politicians, who often find native culture abhorrent.
Recommended.
Heights of discovery.......2002-06-12
If Tim Flannery isn't the luckiest biologist in the world, then perhaps he's the hardest working. He possesses a spirit of adventure that may exceed both. His twenty years of exploring the mysteries of New Guinea are superbly outlined and related in this engaging account. Although a mammalogist by profession, his interests range far beyond any academic discipline. We follow his efforts to meet and gain acceptance by the remote peoples of the New Guinea highlands. They are a diverse lot, and every new contact is fraught with uncertainty. He introduces us to the teasing pleasures of New Guinea pidgin, a language adopted by indigineous peoples to cross the nearly 1 000 languages that exist on the island.
Throwim' Away Leg, New Guinean pidgin for a journey, is an appropriate title for this book. Flannery's 15 long-term expeditions took him over most of the island, meeting the people, tracking animals and assessing the changes in the ecology. It is difficult, in this jet travel age to comprehend the impact of "remote people," but Flannery has done it. He's adept at sharing the wonder he felt in his travels. We feel his fears, his joys of discovery, his sadness at the incursion of industrial civilization in an unprepared land. Flannery's account is given with an astonishing detachment. He recognizes the needs of both the indigenous people and the invaders. Cannibalism, so abhorrent to "civilized" readers, is placed in its true framework as viewed by the New Guinean mountain peoples. He's aware of the population pressures on local resources among the tribes, not excusing, but imparting rare understanding of the reality of life in wilderness.
The author's love of wildlife is made clear throughout the book. An encounter with three-metre-long python that tried desperately to throttle him is related with incredible compassion. One can only sympathize with the pilot and passengers who shared the cockpit of a small aircraft with it on its journey to Port Moresby. Flannery's real feelings, however, are for the varieties of tree kangaroos living on the island. He asserts the high point of his travels was the classification of a rare black and white species of this creature. High point, indeed! Three
thousand metres up in the New Guinean highlands, local hunters brought him the chewed remains of two "Dingisios" - enough to identify and describe this rare animal.
Flannery's enthusiasms and vivid desriptive powers make this book an unforgettable read. His descriptions of the impact of outsiders, from both East and West, portray a land under immense stress. Not only Western mining and lumber companies, who have seared the landscape with roads, mines and felling, but Indonesia's settlement programmes come under his penetrating gaze. He recognizes their needs, but urges better forms of accomodation are required. The biological story is conveyed well integrated with social, political and environmental issues. An all-encompassing study, this book will give the reader many fresh insights and topics for further reflection.

Great field book!.......2005-12-19
This is the book we use on NOLS expeditions, and we have to literally carry these books. It is worth carrying.
a lovely piece of writing about an amazing place.......2003-07-13
This is one of the books that first drew me to Baja california years ago. Unfortunately much of what Krutch saw has inevitably been swept away by the rising tide of tourism & development, but enough remains that Krutch's lyrical prose is more than a eulogy, one can still find some of teh magic that he describes so well here. I would strongly reccomend this book to anyone planning on visiting Baja California and/or anyone who is interested in the intersection between natural history and literature -one gets both here.

Follies Phallic.......2004-09-29
It was a bit tough ploughing through this book ten or so years ago as it seems a little ponderous and self conscious but I'm glad I did. In retrospect I can't think of another book that raised my consciousness quite the way this one did. As a female victim of childhood molestation, I have tried to understand sexuality from the male perspective and it was helpful to read a frank but intelligent and spiritual book by a man about men without intercession and without courtship to the feminine in the audience. I often recommend this book to women who are genuinely interested in a better understanding of men and not just interested in getting them to put the toilet seat down. If you're one of these more enlightened sister types, give the book a try. It's one of a kind in my experience. I also appreciate the Jungian approach to all matters in life and this book is part of a series of books, most of which I have read with interest and appreciation.
an uncommon view lucidly expressed.......2000-09-13
This is a great book for one's 'men's issues' or Jungian bookshelf. Of particular interest to me was the author's elucidation of the archetypal unconscious having 'phallos' qualities intrinsically. Both Freud and Jung articulated the feminine quality of the unconscious, with heroic ego differentiation representing a masculine step (initially)away from it. Yet, metaphorically, why would the unconscious be exclusively feminine? Why would the heroic ideal be exclusively masculine? As our culture's gender roles become more flexible Monick's interpretations will become increasingly useful to analysts and other therapists. This book also contains great photos of depictions of the phallos in art.
A readable intro into the "archetypal masculine.".......1999-10-14
A useful addition to your "men's issues" bookshelf. Especially good for readers not familiar with the new movement to affirm the sacredness of masculinity. -- Craig Chalquist, M.S., creator of the Thineownself self-exploration site.
First things first.......1999-06-27
First Mother then Phallos then the union of the two, all performed WITHIN, has nothing to do with human beings, which is to say LOVE is not human = EROS.
What a silly book........1999-05-06
It's like a lot of Jungiana, a lot of assertions and vapid conclusions. What makes this one worse than most is the pretentiousness of its language and tone. I do not have the impression that the author really has enough depth in comparative religions, anthropology, or even psychology to pull this off, and too bad, because the subject has potential.

Hilarious! Great coffee table book!.......2007-03-08
This book is a fast read. Its full of hilarious facts and great coversation starters for a drunk crowd! Throw it on the coffee table and see who picks it up. I'd recommend it!
a penis is a penis is a penis..........2007-01-19
*The Penis Book* is an interesting "gag gift" of a book that you can give to friends or keep for yourself. In it are interesting facts and tidbits about the penis. This book is designed for anyone (men, gay, straight, women) to read.
In the book, you'll read about if size matters or not. You'll read how straight and gay men treat their penises. You'll learn international words for the penis. You'll learn to vary your metaphors for "spanking the monkey".
There are quirky stuff in there as well. Such as what goes on in the "penis head" toy manufacturing company. You'll read what men think they'll be or do if they didn't have a penis. You'll also read what women would do if they had a penis. You'll read quotes about bulges and self-sucking and odd news.
There are also some little known facts and historical tidbits. A mechanism device was created during one of the World Wars to curb wet dreams. You'll read up on the different names for body piercings in the groin area, such as the Prince Albert. You'll learn of a festival celebration of the penis in Asia.
There are plenty of pictures in this little book. However, none of them are pornographic. There are pictures of penis candies, metal penises, cartoon penises, penis-shaped toys, tattooed penises, painted penises and many others. You'll get to analyzed paintings of penises. It's like a world of penises in this book!
Weird quotes and poems are also provided. You'll laugh, groan and maybe nod in agreement. You'll share with your friends or partner. You'll roll your eyes. You might learn a thing or two.
My favorite parts are the different names of the penis around the world and the different metaphors for "rounding up tadpoles". Some of them would just make you laugh.
There's just so many stuff in this little book, which will surprise you. So, get this book and embrace the knowledge of the penis.
Goofy Coffee Table Book.......2006-02-06
And now I know why they call it a "Prince Albert." Quirky art, Tidbits of history, and tips for men who wish to mingle with polite society. Something fun to leave in the bathroom for guests. Not much you won't already know, but it's funny to read again. All hail the penis!
The Penis Book - A "Must Have" for your collection.......2005-10-15
While in DC last month I saw this book in a store and purchased 4 copies. I read the book and found it completely entertaining, yet informative. It is amazing to me how the penis rules the mind of a man. The book is full of interesting facts and I learned alot. I am going to purchase several more for gifts. I signed the books I gave away. "In the end, they are all dicks. Some are just more special than others." How true!
A must have!!.......2004-11-30
A most enjoyable book that is funny, entertaining...and even educational. There were things in there I had no idea!! For all to enjoy....females and males a like! (A great gift!!)

Book Description
Beginning with an overview of the symbolism of creative forces in general,
The Phallus first examines the representation of male fertility in such forms as the menhirs or standing stones of prehistoric Europe; the Mahalinga and Svayambhu of India; and the ancient Greek Omphalos. The second part of the book surveys the presence of ithyphallic gods in archaic shamanistic religions (the Lord of the Animals), the Greek pantheon (Hermes, Priapus), and the Hindu deities (Ardhanarishvara, the androgyne). Danielou also explores the role of Shaivist and Dionysian initiatory rites in bringing men into communion with the creative forces of life. Illustrated throughout with photographs and line drawings of European and Indian art,
The Phallus celebrates the expression of the masculine in the religious traditions of East and West.
Phallic imagery, in one form or another, may be found in the artistic traditions of virtually every world culture since prehistoric times. Alain Danielou here unveils the religious impulse underlying art that at first glance seems to have no purpose beyond the erotic.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic & Informative!.......2006-09-24
There is a lot of information packed into this 113 page book...and a LOT of pictures! Danielou provides a strong overview of the phallus as a symbol and an object of worship. The Phallus is well researched and chock full of interesting details and myths from around the world relating to the importance of the phallus. One of the most powerful messages I got from this reading is that the phallus was seen as the object of power (a source of life/energy), not the man...the man (according to the text) was the phallus-bearer and it not he was the source of the power/life/energy. I found the entire thing to be very interesting! One minor quibble, I think because this is a translation, there is always at least a little bit of difficulty with flow...though this is really not a problematic translation by any means. I also have to admit, I learned a few things I DID NOT KNOW, and that is always welcome when reading a book! I would definitely recommend it!
The Magnificent Male Symbol.......2002-08-13
Of all the disputes of modern times, the most difficult to reconcile in a dual gender world is the grandeur of the male phallus and its idolization as a symbol of male strength and power. In the Bible, it dons the symbolism of all creation for its functionality and unique character, making it the tool of civilization. Oddly, within that burden rests a world unduly concerned with its exposure and exhibition, particularly in its moments of swollen pride reserved for times of sexual excitement. Contrast the phallus at rest when its devine power is merely imaginable for its capacity and what results is its fascinating dual nature, too often judged by its larger dimension. The tool through which the real "family jewels" are delivered to deposit nature's bounty have been unfairly criticized in our puritanical history. A similar problem occurs for female genitals creating the great shame that burdens society in its love/hate schizophrenic resolve in what attitudes are appropriate in any given situation of that primary focus. Misrepresented by advertisers, condemned by religious leaders, what is a male to do? The pride of ownership by both sexes might be the choice of response along with the tender care that any other physical organ deserves and is consistent with the mental health concerns we take with every other part of our bodies. Yet, the sensitive and private areas reserved for intimacies of enormous emotion and passion are often resigned to shameless hiding to survive where both men and women are conditioned to avoid or ignore these bodily parts so that both are unfamiliar with them throughout their lives. God given body parts that are integral to the sum total of our existence, including the ability to have children, are rarely the product of adults who have already had children for their value has been proven, and appreciation is accepted for its (or their) unique function. No need for shame. There is a need for understanding through the education that might be available to reach acceptance of these parts as no different from other organs of our bodies. Of greater sadness is the ridicule that is produced from the general and common functions these parts are meant to perform in our daily lives that ordinary, unthinking people consider gross. The unnatural contemplation and distain of the phallus, rooted in centuries of conflict, no doubt strives to live a normal life where its unique powers may be accepted and appreciated, and even proudly displayed in art, in sculpture, and when appropriate, in private. Overreaction of horror is unnatural for an educated society distorted by its taboos of shame. For God's finest glory designed for its distinct purpose, it is shameful treatment to condemn and irrationally hide God's artwork.
The Phallus: Sacred Symbol of Male Creative Power.......2000-06-03
I found "The Phallus: Sacred Symbol of Male Creative Power" to be a fascinating book, not only with respect to Alain Daniélou's well-researched explanations of the purpose of phallic symbolism and worship, but also for his inclusion of ancient legends, beliefs, and cultural customs. With so much history and religio-cultural reasoning underlying phallic symbolism and worship, I'm personally amazed, as the author appears to be, that Western civilization, for the most part, considers this such a forbidden subject. In the introduction, the Author extends the amazement with the following caveat:
"Contempt for this sacred emblem, as well as degradation and debasement of it, pushes man from the divine reality. It provokes the anger of the gods and leads to the decline of the species. The man who scorns the very symbol of the life principle abandons his kind to the powers of death."
"The Phallus" is based on what I discovered to be an intriguing subject, and it is written with such clarity that I was easily drawn in, enlightened and entertained. Aside from its stimulating intellectual content, this book contains many beautiful photographs in both color and black and white.
