Book Description
The English garden, no matter how grand, is an outgrowth of nature, while the French garden, or "jardin a la francaise, " is a place of formality and grandeur. The origins of the latter are to be found in the Italian Renaissance, which sought inspiration in antiquity. Architects were hired for gardens for the first time, and expected to create a work of art by taming nature to their purposes. The French garden makes use, above all, of geometric design, symmetry, repetition of decorative elements, and perspective created by seemingly endless rows of trees, carefully tended paths, and man-made linear bodies of water, cascades, and fountains. The French garden is an intellectual conception that culminated with Andre Le Notre and the sumptuous and vast gardens he created for the Sun King at Versailles. The King, the court, and the newly rich all sought to express their power through the chateaux they built, inherited, or bought, as well as through the richness of the gardens that surrounded them on all sides. Into these, they integrated statuary by the great sculptors of the day, as well as stone and metal pavilions and other follies.
Versailles set the tone for Europe's palace builders, and thus it is no surprise that the French garden became part of every royal or aristocratic residence built since. For the first time, all the major French gardens have been gathered here in one book, all specially photographed over several years. Among the thirty-six seen here are Versailles, the Tuileries, Saint Cloud Marly, and Villandry in France, as well as Queluz in Portugal, Drottinghulm in Sweden, Peterhof near St. Petersburg, and Schonbrunn, the Habsburg Versailles. This is a major reference book that will delight travelers, gardeners, and historians.

SPLENDORS OF FRANCE.......2006-09-04
A beautiful book from cover to cover. The images are crisp and the subject matter simply breathtaking. The French garden is the Italian Garden talken to the formal extreme. The master of the French garden, the incomparable, Le Notre, brought the formal garden to its apex, with his work at Veax le Vicomte and Versailles. This book does a wonderful job of capturing the French garden at its most spectacular. If you have any interest in formal gardens are just appreciate amazing photography and beauty in general, then i can't imagine you not loving this book. As for the the other reviews comment about this not being a self help book on French formal gardening..i concur, but honestly madame, were you going to go out and create the the Neptune Fountain at Versailles? I suggest u invest in a copy of the Sun King's notes on the gardens of Versailles, they are well written and quite in depth, I mean what else did Louis have to do, I suppose... I mean get real; it's good to be da king..
Gorgeous book.......2005-08-04
If you are looking for a coffee table book with gorgeous pictures, this is definitely a wonderful book. If you are looking for a book, as I was, that would show you photos of complete gardens so that you might create your own French-inspired garden, this is not the best choice. However, it is a delightful addition to any garden library. If you have been lucky enought to visit France, it brings back fond memories of the landscape. Enjoy!

Book Description
This is the first indepth study of an architect and landscape designer forgotten in scholarship as a result of the precarious historical circumstances in which he pursued his career. Forced to flee France during the Revolution, Ramée spent his life as a nomad, working in Belgium, Saxony, Hamburg, Denmark, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and the United States. Staying only briefly in most places, he was often forgotten, and his works subsequently attributed to other architects. In this reconstruction of his career, Paul Turner demonstrates how Ramée, in the process of his travels, transmitted innovations from country to country and created a unique synthesis of the design currents of the Neo-Classical Age. This study, the result of a decade of research, brings to light not only Ramée’s lost works but also his relationships with diverse clients, including aristocrats, merchants, poets, educators, American land developers and others.

Book Description
Published on the centenary of the death of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), this stunning book celebrates the artist’s depictions of his native Provence. While Cézanne is recognized as one of the fathers of the modern movement, this publication focuses on his own sense of achievement, especially as a painter exploring the landscape in and around his hometown of Aix-en- Provence. Although he spent time elsewhere in France, especially Paris, Cézanne repeatedly returned to Provence, where he lived nearly all of the last twenty years of his life.
In studios at the Jas de Bouffan and at Les Lauves, and on painting expeditions into the surrounding countryside, Cézanne created some of his most original and compelling works, not only landscapes but also portraits of local characters, friends, and family; still lifes, and imaginative figure paintings, such as the monumental bathers painted in the last decade of his life.
Beautifully illustrated with some 160 paintings and watercolors, Cézanne in Provence offers fascinating insights into a true genius in the history of art and his beloved native countryside.

Excellent Book on Cezanne.......2007-02-12
Great prints and a number of well done articles on Cizanne's work.
A Beautiful Journey.......2006-03-09
This book is a lovely accompaniment to the Cezanne in Provence exhibit. The narration is beautifully written and describes the beautiful landscapes that Cezanne painted. It provides an interesting chronology of Cezanne's life and works.
Beautiful Book.......2006-03-01
This is one of the most beautifully done catalogues I have purchased recently. The color and clarity of the reproductions are excellent. The paper used has a dull mat finish which enhances the quality of the reproductions. If you love Cezanne's painting (which I do), then this is a must have addition to your library.

A Love Affair of a Book.......2007-06-13
Written in English, French and German, "Paris" not just a guide book, but a memory book of exquisite design, superb photographs, and the highest quality printing on thick, finely-textured paper. Note that the type is a bit small, even with reading glasses.
These featured photos from the internal pages of the book don't fully capture its beauty and artistic design. When was the last time you ran your fingers over thick, finely-textured paper and experienced genuine quality for $16.40? Like Paris, this book is not "slick". It's the equivalent of a Bergdorf Goodman cashmere sweater.
Organized by arrondisement or neighborhood, each page captures the very soul and character of Paris, immersing the reader in the atmosphere and sensuality of the streets, shops, hotels and restaurants. I was completely seduced by each page.
Anjelika Taschen introduces both the seasoned explorer of Parisian neighborhoods and the first-time visitor to new haunts. Stop by the Grande Herboristerie Parisienne de la Place Clichy, a shop stocking more than 900 herbs that produce an infinite number of individually-prepared remedies for a multitude of modern maladies. I've been to Paris more times than I can count, and I found many new experiences for my Sept. visit.
Plan ahead in your gift giving or personal travel schedule. Unfortunately, this jewel of a guide book is not immediately available in the U.S. and is on a 1-3 week delivery. Buy a few copies in advance and put them in the closet. You will have a unique, memorable gift for special friends, family and business colleagues of every age, male and female.
Book Description
"If you are looking for a celebration of life in a small space, turn to the French garden for the answers."The Evening Standard
French country gardening has experienced a renaissance in recent years. While the great French heritage still thrives, its traditions now provide inspiration for fresh delights and creative expression, as vividly demonstrated in this beautifully photographed volume.
The book reaches into every corner of France, from Normandy to the Riviera, from Picardy to the Pyrenees, revealing in exquisite detail the full extent and exciting diversity of the modern French country garden. A magical and intimate "grandmother's garden" on the ancient Via Aurélia combines fruits, herbs, flowers, and vegetables; "gardens for the five senses" focus on sensual stimulation; "natural" gardens protect local ecosystems; and formal gardens incorporate witty and subversive variations on the traditional pattern. 236 color illustrations.

Beware-this is a reprint!.......2006-07-30
This is a reprint of a hardbook in softcover form with a new cover photo. The content is wonderful but I already owned the hardcover and thought it was a "new book".
Book Description
The purest of human joys
Enduring inspiration to countless artists, Provence is a rural paradise, a verdant, fertile environment that offers endless opportunities for those practitioners of what the philosopher Francis Bacon called "the purest of human joys".
The art of landscape gardening demonstrates more than almost any other activity the human need to create havens of peace and contemplation. Benignly fashioning nature, the landscape gardener responds to what is present, as well as importing dazzling exotic plants and trees to reveal an extraordinary new world of the senses. Provence then is a gardener's idyll - a place where the extremes of "wilderness" and the symmetry of geometric construction come together in some extraordinary designs.
These creations, building on the qualities of the area - light and a dry climate - do not divorce themselves from their surroundings but rather create the impression that indeed the whole of Provence is one magnificent garden. Whether employing the region's evergreens, its widespread shrubbery (for topiary), its lavender meadows, its plentiful herbs and spices, or its "desert" vegetation - cactus and the like - the soil's the limit and the imagination the only perimeter fence.
From the humid tropical to the unspoilt hills, from the cubist inspiration at Hyères to the Zen patterns of Erik Borja, and from the coast to the valleys, only in Provence can you say that you walk in gardens as varied as dreams, yet as sensual as life.

books and art by elizabeth muray.......2004-05-31
Elizabrth Murrray's books and art work are beautiful and inspiring. I am contributing these volumes to the public school of my grandchildren to accompany thier new school garden. She has a new book of art by children in Equador called Nantu Aujujae but I couldn't find it with your search, I wanted to include it with the other Elizabeth Murray books for the school. I hope you post it soon.
Murray's book is the next best thing to being there........1999-10-23
An easy read and visual feast, Monet's Passion exposes methods behind the color, texture, layout and scents of his magical gardens. It magnifies one's experience visiting the gardens or his works in galleries, and is a valuable companion to the painter's many works.
The book motivated me to visit Giverny, France........1998-12-14
Beautiful photographs of the gardens at all seasons. Plant lists. The author tells about the history of Giverny and her experiences as a gardener there. It would have been helpful to know which US zones the plants would be hardy in.
Book Description
Warmonger, womanizer, and autocrat, Louis XIV may also have been history’s most fanatical gardener. At Versailles, twelve miles outside Paris, France’s self-styled “Sun King” created not only Europe’s most lavish palace, but, beginning in 1661, the most extensive gardens the Western world has ever seen. Assisting Louis in this enterprise was the low-born gardener André Le Nôtre, whose character and temperament were as different from those of his sovereign as it is possible to conceive. Where Louis was ruthless and relentlessly driven, Le Nôtre was down to earth, witty and amiable – and also phenomenally talented. While Louis could strike fear into the highest in the land with just a look, Le Nôtre enjoyed the king’s trust and friendship for more than 40 years. In this lavishly illustrated book, Ian Thompson tells more comprehensively than ever before the intertwined stories of an extraordinary garden and an extraordinary friendship.

LOUIS' EDEN.......2006-11-08
Louis XIV was fortunite in his association with the great Le Notre or I should say he was lucky to have the power of the devine right monarch, so he could steal him from Fouquet and Vieux le Vicomte to work on his Vallala, Versailles. Louis was king incarnate, he was the state, period, the epitome, the very definition of the devine, absolute monarch, and he knew exactly what he wanted and with the genius of Le Notre he created a garden that was and to this day still is the envey of the world. This book does a fine job of capturing Le Notre's gardens at Versailles at their best. The text is enlightening and the images are well conceived. If you have any interest in Versailles or French Formal Gradens, the I highly recommend this book.

Monet's Garden: Through the Season at Giverny.......2000-04-26
As a long time fan of impressionist art, Claude Monet and gardening, I found this book very informative. The setting is Monet's former home just outside Paris, France. The book details how the grounds were renovated under Monet's direction and how upkeep continues on the grounds today. Many of the settings such as the Lilly Pond are pictured and described in detail. This book is well worth the purchase price for Monet fans.
