The subjects of photography and computers have tremendous breadth and depth. Understanding either one can be a challenge, especially if you're a beginner. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Digital Photography does an excellent job of breaking the ice as it introduces readers to photography, computers, and digital cameras.

The book really does start at the beginning, with a short history of the camera and photography, plus the basics of composition. But it progresses quickly into an overview of today's digital tools. Instead of bogging down the reader in myriad details about camera models, computer software and hardware, and other minutiae, the book gives an overview of the available technologies, describing which system or format is best for different kinds of tasks. This is a good thing--hardware and software evolve rapidly, and some of the details mentioned in the book as "up and coming" are now standard. (See the sections on camera resolution for examples.)

After a look at how the gear works, the text dives into a lesson on photography basics (composition, lighting, shutter speeds, and lens focal lengths) and the details specific to digital photography (image resolution, monitor and printer calibration, and compression). The companion CD-ROM includes a demo version of Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and chapter 13, "Improving Your Images," goes into detail on using this image-editing application to improve the pictures you've already shot.

What good is instant digital photography if you can't instantly share your work on the Web? Chapter 22 addresses this specific issue, covering the basics of building a Web site (nothing fancy) and how to compress and upload your favorite pictures for everyone to see.

No particular platform is favored in this book--the contents of the CD-ROM are compatible with both Macs and PCs. Overall, this book succeeds at teaching the principles and basics of how digital photography works, and how to set up for it. Practical, useful, and enlightening, this is a good first step on a complex road. --Mike Caputo

3 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Digital Photography (3rd Edition).......2006-03-15

The book should be updated as most digital cameras - point and shoot and DSLRs have more than 2 or 3 megapixels. A lot of the info is pertinent no matter the megapixel size when it comes to correcting the photos with computer software.

2 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2005-10-28

Unfortunately this book is too far out of date to be of any significant value. The section describing the various types of cameras is no longer accurate and information regarding software, files sizes and formats is of little use.
If you are looking for a guide to using your digital camera this book will only give you basic definitions of the terminology and process involved in digital photography. The sections on composition and lighting are good.
There is a primer on Photoshop Elements. Again this section is out of date as it refers to Elements. 2.0. (At the time of this review Elements is currently in version 4.0) While this section does provide an adequate introduction to the various capabilities of Elements, most of what is found in this book can be found on Adobe's own descriptions of the product.
I have never returned a book to Amazon before but I will be returning this one. It is simply too far out of date and too introductory to be worth the cost.

2 out of 5 stars Steven Greenberg did good job, but the book binding is awful.......2002-09-07

I bought the book yesterday and already read half of it. The content is great, very helpful and easy to read BUT the book binding is awful. This disappointed me a lot. I am wondering if all 'Alpha' books have same 'quality' of (un)binding...

Except this problem, the information provided is really helpful and written in a friendly & clear manner.

I enjoy a lot the author's style and personally I would like to see another Steven Greenberg's book, more detailed on Part 3 of the book ('Let's Take Pictures').

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners!.......2002-04-04

I read this book two years ago after buying my first digital camera. I gave it away after reading it, so maybe it's not a keeper as a reference, but even so, I have to praise this book very highly for the insight into digital photography that it's given me. I've bought two other digitals since, and find that the lessons that I learned from this book are with me even to this day. If you're a beginner, and wish to understand this technology, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get started in digital photography.......2001-08-03

I have had a digital camera' a Kodak DC280 for many months now. I have ben a 35MM amature for over 30 years and this book has helped me make the transition to digital photography better than anything else I could have done. Before I got this book, I had many problems with doing this as the manuals on the software were very poorly written and had many things just skipped over or missing entirely. Before I got halfway through the Book there were many things that helped me greatly That were just not in the manuals that came with the software. It has made everything much easier and faster. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting in digital photography.

1 out of 5 stars If you are a true idiot-- buy this book.......2006-04-22

Obviously one can't fault a book for catering to idiots when their title actually claims to be for "Complete Idiots" however....I was under the impression that the title was simply a marketing gimmick designed to insinuate that this book covers all the aspects of the subject. Well, I was wrong.

If you are truly a "complete idiot" and have never seen or used a camera before, then possibly this book is for you. And if that's the case, I doubt you're reading a book on the subject. But if you want a book that is up to date, addresses some of the more interesting and needed questions about photography (including more than one page on lighting) and read beyond the 2nd grade level, then I would suggest another source. This book also seems to have been directed at a 1980's consumer. There is little discussion of digital cameras and 80% of the book is focused on traditional SLR's-- and if you have a traditional SLR you're a professional photographer (one would hope) and that means it's unlikely that you're buying a book called THE IDIOTS GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHY. THis book is currently gathering dust on my bookshelk while I scour the internet for relevant info about this subject. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Informative Book.......2004-08-05

I got this book as a gift for Christmas. I think this book has all you need to know about film and the type of camera you might want to buy. It also helps you understand lighting, film, and creative things to do with photography! It also gives you things to watch out for so you don't make a mistake. I constently go back to it for ideas and I'm finding more helpful things everytime I open it. I think it's an excellent book for beginner photographers.

        2 out of 5 stars Photography Like a Pro - brief synopsis.......2003-03-08

This book is a more-or-less well written manual; however, I must admit that a lot of the information in this book is not very well presented, and often confusing (especially if this is a first time that you are encountering the subject). More detail should have been given to differences in aparture settings, and examples were lacking. Depth-of-Field was poorly explained, and while this book starts out with something as simple as a single-use camera, about 50% into it, explanations are assuming that you are very familiar with the concepts before reading this book. I must say that if I were a true beginner, I would not benefit from this book very much at all. I am not sure if there ever will be a book that will have a smooth transition from basics to advanced techniques, and will include many examples, but this book fails completely.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a great teacher!.......2001-11-28

I think Mike Stensvold really knows his stuff, and is really up on all things photographic. His humor is engaging and helps me learn more effectively and efficiently. I hope he'll write more books like this, as I aspire to one day be a great writer and photographer like him!

        5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2000-06-16

This book is amazing. It covers everything from using disposable cameras at wedding receptions to having fun with filters and lenses. The pictures help explain a lot of the ideas the author is presenting, too. It's not all a piece of cake, and the author doesn't assume you are an idiot. Luckily, he's an excellent teacher. Like he writes in the book, use what you find helpful, and skip whatever doesn't interest you or what is beyond what you're willing to learn. I have already been trying out some of his tips for animal and outdoor shots--the pix turned out great!--and can't wait to try more advanced tips.

5 out of 5 stars Why Fumble When You Can Read It in Detail?.......2001-04-09

There are few things as satisfying and fun to the videographer as making professional movies - videos that you actually want to watch a second time or more - and Apple's iMovie software is THE tool to do just that. You get superb results from an inexpensive piece of software - IF you can use it. While the program is exceptionally simple, there is only an on screen "Help Menu," and we all know how those work: everything but the question you need answered, it seems. Into the void has rushed Brad Miser with wit and wisdom, and with all the answers and instruction you need and then some. His Idiot's Guide is a marvelous introduction to video/movie making, and he walks you through composition, editing, mixing, enhancing, titling, effects, and stuff you never thought possible when you bought that video camera (or even thought about buying it). Miser is one of those very few authors that are effectively "high tech" and "high touch," he writes with clarity, and with an obvious love of his subject. If Amazon would allow it, I'd give this six stars.

5 out of 5 stars One idiot's review of The Complete Idiot's Guide to iMovie2.......2000-11-30

iMovie2 does not come with an instruction book, and the iMac booklet helps precious little, so I was pleased to find Brad Miser's Idiot Guide (which is a series I like anyway). The book is both imformative and insightful, plus a lot of fun to read. It got me going with iMovie in very short order, and when I emailed Mr. Miser to clarify a point, I got a prompt and effective answer. Highly recommended.

I really like this book. It covers everything about Photoshop Elements 2.0, and it is really well written. I especially like the chapters on working with photos and the chapters on layers.

The disk that came with my book has all of the files too; I guess whatever problem there was before is taken care of.

It's a great book and I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Clsoe to being grreat but . . ........2003-01-28

The premise of this book is that you will learn by doing. The only problem is that you can't do that because the examples/ aren't on the CD. As an addtional problem, the software that is supposed to calibrate your monitor is also among the missing. Maybe the CD is for an earlier orlater edition but it makes the process very frustrating. Frustrating because the book is very well written and quite comrehensive. And you must have a book if you are to learn this very involved convuluted, if very useful, application.

1 out of 5 stars Missing files in book CD.......2003-01-12

Although the book has good intentions ... well written and to the point,I can hardly recommend it on account of the fact that a number of the files that are referred to in the book are missing on the CD. In particular,a crucial chapter 7 on layering refers to a file in the Chapter 7 folder part of the CD. The folder is not present on my CD and neither is the file. Without it this particular section of the book is valueless.

        5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2002-12-19

I got Photoshop Elements 2.0 and purchased this book at the same time. It has really helped me learn the program. I would highly recommend it for anyone new to the program, or anyone who used the first version and wants to see whats' new. It really covers everything.

So much of this book is dedicated to equipment, I would recommend buying this book before buying any equipment. I only gave this book a "3" because it covers more theory than practical information. For instance, Chapter 24 "Multimedia Madness: Alternative Methods of Distributing Your Video" mentions that you should "choose a codec (compression/decompression) scheme." Then it moves on with out going in to some of the pro/cons of even the most popular formats.

5 out of 5 stars IDIOTS GUIDE TO MAKING HOME VIDEOS.......2001-03-11

AS PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION FOR A LARGE METROPOLITAN NEW YORK COMPANY THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED READING FOR EMPLOYEES DOING EDUCATIONAL TRAINING VIDEO RECORDING AND EDITING. IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND, COMPREHENSIVE AND THOPROUGH. I GIVE IT A FIVE STAR RATING.

        5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2000-05-03

I got this book as a birthday present from my uncle, since he knew that I didn't understand all of the functions on my videocamera. It's helped tremendously--a great basic guide.

4 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2000-04-22

I got this book because the guy who sold me my video recorder recommended it. In it, I found everything I was looking for, plus some things that I probably wouldn't have thought of. Overall, very useful.

        5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2000-04-06

I definitely recommend this book! I recently returned from a vacation with some friends, and we wanted to take our HOURS of videos and make them into something worth watching. The book taught us how to edit the videos down to a manageable size...basically, we cut out the boring stuff! I had never used a computer editing program before. If I could figure this stuff out, believe me--you can! :)

4 out of 5 stars Good for the very green.......2002-05-16

This book is okay for those just starting to explore the camera. It's an almost-too-easy guide that is well-suited to complete novices, as the title suggests. It's actually ideal for younger people and those who've just bought their very first camera and want to start with the basic building blocks. For the rest of us it seems to miss out on the essential premise behind photography guides - how to compose and shoot a half-decent picture. I recommend John Hedgecoe's 'The Photographer's Handbook' - a much more comprehensive guide for multi-level photography skills.

2 out of 5 stars Some good information, but poorly organized.......2000-02-05

This book tries to cover many aspects of photography from equipment selection to photo technique/composition to technical jargon to home dark rooms. However, I found the organization quite poor, with topics such as exposure popping up in various places and other inconsistencies. Also, the author has a definite bias and preaches it strongly. For example, he basically states that you cannot get good pictures from a point and shoot camera, which is certainly not true in all cases.

Also, the information seems somewhat dated, as APS and digital are given zero coverage, and he discusses topics like manual film winding quite a bit.

On a positive note, the chapters on different photographic specialties (macro, portrait, landscape, art, etc.) were well done and informative.

If the writing and organization was tightened up, and new chapters on newer technologies were added, this would be a much better book.

1 out of 5 stars From the bookshelf to the basement in 2 weeks.......2000-01-12

This book covers all the basics, but nothing more. No in depth material at all and it's shocking how so many pages are filled with so little information. This is the first and last "Complete Idiot" book I will buy, and I guess the author was just trying to stay within the limited guidelines of the title. Also, I think any photography instructional book should have good photographs in it. The art direction, photos imparticular, are terrible. This book explains, in basic terms, how cameras work and what equipment you might want to buy, but not much else.

        1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......1999-12-18

Perhaps this book's title is too accurate. It's very elementary, doesn't go into depth about anything and as a result, is not a good reference. Yes, it has the answers to basic photography questions but not much more. I haven't picked it up since I got my Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography.

        1 out of 5 stars Didn't have what I was looking for........1999-11-25

I bought this book because I heard it was more in depth than the competition, and better for an SLR user like me. I usually use my Nikon. I have to say I was pretty disappointed. It talks about shuuter speeds and f/stops, but it's never all that clear or specific about when to set what. There's not much real step-by-step stuff or charts, and I was surprised at how few actual illustration photographs or diagrams. The writing doesn't have much pzazz, but what bothers me more is that sometimes it's so vague or unclear that I couldn't apply what the author was talking aabout. And there's just not much detail. Since I buy photo magazines occasionally I sort of know photo terms, and a lot of times the author's use and definition of them doesn't match up with what I read in the magazines. There's even a whole section on darkroom work, which the author could have spent on more detail in the rest of the book. Does anyone do darkroom work anymore? He should have done something about computer photography instead.
