5 out of 5 stars Don't start your professional photography career without this!.......2007-09-06

More than 80% of new businesses fail and photography studios are probably one of the more susceptible to failure. Being a good photographer and understanding the technical skills necessary to be a successful photographer are a good start, but succeeding as a professional photographer and running a studio require a lot more than just being able to handle a camera.

This is where this excellent book comes in. Written by a professional studio photographer, it leads you through setting up your business, dealing with clients, marketing & selling for a variety of market sectors, as well as legal issues, advertising and much more.

Everything is clearly written and explained, backed up by the personal experiences of the author. Easy to read and digest, this is the perfect introduction to the business of photography.

As a professional photographer myself, I can honestly say that I wouldn't be where I am today without this book. Being a professional photographer is 10% photography and 90% business. Dealing with that fact can be hard for many of us, but this book is of invaluable help.

3 out of 5 stars was hoping for more.......2007-08-06

I was dissapointed that the author mainly discussed wedding photography. I understand this is the bread & butter of the business, but the book should have therefore been titled: "How to Start & Run a Wedding Photography Business." If you are looking for info on starting other types of photography studios, you may be better suited to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars A good read........2007-06-14

A good book. Very American in style, but lots of useful tips for the young photographer.

5 out of 5 stars Covers every possible detail.......2007-03-21

This book is like having a best friend in the photography
business sit down with you and tell you exactly how it all works.
The author spares no details and covers every single aspect of the business he can possibly think of.
This book has a very practical, down to earth common sense approach that is encouraging but realistic at the same time.
I can't think of anything he has left out.

5 out of 5 stars This should be called "the Photographer's Mentor" - an exceelent read........2007-01-15

This book is a must have and a must read for anyone wanting to begin the business of sudio photography and looking for solid advice and clear instruction on how to do that intelligently. In his many years as a successful photographer, with more than 1900 weddings in his portfolio, Lilley brings to the table the practical do's and don'ts needed to for one to suceed.
Lilley works through all the day to day aspects of how to run a studio, including where to locate your business in the community based upon the market share of the public that your brand of photography is aimed at. He shares his detailed insights on how to handle the images from digital cameras with redundant copies. He gives great instruction on how to solicit the funding for a new business by using a business plan, and how to solicit a customer based through marketing yourself to your public
He provides a strong framework of how to shoot and what to shoot when it comes to weddings, portraits, high school senoirs, etc. and the workflow for each of these widely differing types of photography.
If you are going to buy one book to read before plunging into your own business as a photographer this is the one book you must buy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A concise guide to the business of photography.......2007-09-06

As a professional photographer I found this book to be very useful in the early stages of starting my business. After spending much time doing all the things I thought I should be doing (and not getting very far!), I read this book and realized that being a professional photographer was going to mean much more than just being good at photography.

Like many businesses, professional photography requires skills in marketing, selling, advertising and dealing with people. This book introduces all these concepts and more, together with a lot of interesting case-studies of people who have switched to photography from other careers, and how they met the challenges of doing that.

Professional photography can be very rewarding and is an excellent business to be in - but make sure you get off on the right footing by realizing that 90% of it is knowing how to run a business. This book is an excellent way to start.

2 out of 5 stars Studio Photographers ONLY.......2007-07-30

Apparently, and according to this author, the only business you should open as a photographer is a studio. Everything else is pointless.

That being the case, she should have made that clear in the title.

The money I spent on this book was absolutely wasted, and I won't buy anything else without reading the reviews first.

Totally useless.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the start-up studio.......2007-01-14

Not Everything you need to know to start a business but a LOT of what you need to know. No book has Everything you need to know. I recommend this book to those who have not been in business before and want to open a studio. Great advice on customer service and dealing with the public.

5 out of 5 stars good for beginners.......2006-03-27

I have studied "fine art" photography for a long time now. This book was very helpful to me as I've been timid about using my skills & knowledge to start a business. the book is encouraging and informative. For me it was perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful information for budding entrepreneurs.......2006-03-24

I have to agree, only partly, with some of the previous reviews that say the author is stating the obvious. It may be obvious to a seasoned, professional photographer who has been in business for years - but to someone just starting out, it's valuable information. She uses stories about mistakes she has made, learning the hard way, and gives advice on how to avoid making those same mistakes (e.g. the "use tax" flub and the tax penalties she paid for her ignorance). As she says, good photographers are not necessarily good business people. I think this book does a good job of giving prospective photography business owners a real, down-to-earth, inside look inside the life of a photographer who is in business for himself/herself. Her writing style is very enjoyable to read, too.

Book Description

Photography is in the midst of a revolution. Rohn Engh shows part-time and professional photographers how to compete with the big agencies by using the Internet--the new frontier of stock photography sales--and by determining how their images, both traditional and digital, are delivered and paid for. A comprehensive guide, sellphotos.com covers everything for photographers from Internet basics and the nature of the stock photography trade to building their own web sites and operating their own business.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good photo marketing and business book.......2004-07-02

If you've read Rohn Engh's previous book titled Sell and Re-Sell Your Photos, then you might want to skip SellPhotos.com. Approximately half of the information is straight out of Sell and Re-Sell Your Photos.

That said, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the stock photography business. It covers a variety of business-oriented topics, such as forms, letters, pricing, marketing, legal issues, etc. The author's words are very encouraging--by the time you're done with this book, you will feel confident enough to run a successful stock photography business.

As for "Establishing a Successful Stock Photography Business on the Internet," this book falls short. This book was published in January 2000, when the internet was still very much the wild west. The internet, as well as technology in general, has evolved quite a bit in the past few years, making some of the information in this book obsolete.

If you don't mind weeding out the obsolete information, then I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2004-06-12

The book was decent and informative but out of date.It does give you a good idea about using the internet and setting up a web site to help sell your photos in the marketplace.
It was published in 2000. It refers to using windows 95 & 98 and modems with 2800 baud. It is out of date, he needs to update the book.
I paid a discount price of 13.99 for it but it should be selling for less.
I read his other book "How to sell and resell your photos" which was a very good book for photographers thinking of going into stock photography.
It would be nice to see an update with the newer XP operating system and newer software programs and web sites listed.

3 out of 5 stars SellPhotos.Com: Your Guide to Establishing a Successful Stoc.......2003-03-18

This book does have alot of good information in it about establishing an online stock photography business.

I gave it three stars because it is severlly outdated on the technology and URL's that are included as examples.

4 out of 5 stars SellPhotos.com.......2003-03-17

This book has alot of information to help the novice get started in the right direction. There are several tips and points that can help almost anyone get started in Stock Photography.

A major problem that I have with the book; some of the information is dated. The technology is mid to late 90's and several of the links in the book used as examples are broken URL's (they don't work)

5 out of 5 stars Author shares enthusiasm and experience.......2001-09-10

This is a wonderful combination of enthusiasm and practical advice. He is like a kind uncle who wants to show you his favorite subject and help you decide how to make your own version of photography work.

It is almost a month today, I have not yet received the book.

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement in a book.......2007-04-05

When I get discouraged and feel I don't have what it takes as a photographer, I turn to this book. The information is simple and shows you that any quality shot can find the right buyer. I have reread this book over and over and its the most valuable tool in my arsenal of books.

1 out of 5 stars Books that sell.......2007-01-08

There's nothing new in this book that haven't already been said. I was fairly disappointed, as I was hoping for a book that explained to the point what people want to spend money on, and how to technically go about to get those images. Instead, I get "advice" that is nothing more than common sense.

In my opinion, you can skip this book entirely.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2007-01-03

This is an amazing book full of good tips and beautiful photos. The text is very clear and concise. The author is an amazing photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent advice, could use an update.......2006-07-13

Lee Frost is an extremely able photographer who also happens to be quite a practical businessman. In Photos That Sell, he shares a good deal of what he has learned about taking and marketing photos successfully. He begins by walking you through the main markets that are likely to be open to your work and then moves on to what types of shots you can best hope to sell. Helping to iilustrate all of this is a collection of hundreds of Mr. Frost's photos. The variety and quality of these photographs is worth the price of the book all by themselves. It's fairly impressive how deftly he shifts between portraiture, landscape, and still life photography.

If this book has a shortcoming, it is that it could stand revising to bring it current. In the digital age, things have a way of changing quickly and this book is now 5 years old. While the book does cover digital technology, it was written in a time when digital cameras were far less capable than they currently are and many markets have opened up to them as they have improved.

Overall, I would certainly recommend the book. If the author brings out a new edition to cover the ever-increasing role of digital photography then purchasing it will be a must for budding freelancers.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Fooled by the cover.......2007-08-05

I have purchased many exellent photo books through Amazon.

But this book is purely trash. The pictures are the kind you will find in german/english
page 3 newspapers.

Alle the pics are early 80's (book first published 1988), and this is clearly a poor
reprint, without much added in 2005.

If you like page 3 girls, ok. But if you are serious about glamour photography, stay away.

3 out of 5 stars Good information... bad image examples!.......2007-08-03

Great information but at the price of some really bad images really keep this book from being a definitive source.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated glamour.......2005-09-12

This book would have been a nice try about 25 years ago. Now it is outdated and oldfashioned. The genre has developed rapidly, and the 'glamour' of the 80's is not so glamorous any more. The pictures look aged, and, then, we have the digital world nowadays - just an information for the writer ;)

1 out of 5 stars Canned , boring and not glamourous .......2005-02-16

First, the look inside on this website is not what is in this book,
but of another edition. The photos are so simplistic and boring.
.........................................................
..... Glamour?.. Def. of Glamour: An air of compelling charm, romance, and excitement, especially when delusively alluring. ........ This book has 95% nude women, many with their legs spread open, or breasts and crotch as the focul point. Photos a
15 year old boy would take and like or for men who see only this aspect of women.

The photos are of poor quality--primarily nude women done like simple snapshots of your wife with an adequate camera. If the women were clothed you would not think much of these photos. Not artistic or glamourous at all. The technical information is weak. A bunch of photos of breasts, butts and open crotch shots.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Badass.......2004-02-15

My main fascination with photography recently has been lighting, so before reading this book I decided to read "Lighting for Glamour Photography". I almost wish I had read this one first since it covers glamour lighting in great detail, plus a whole lot of other stuff.

I just finished reading it today, so it's still sinking in, but if you plan on taking beautiful pictures of women and taking it seriously, you pretty much have to read this book. It's a career's worth of experience in an easy to read book.

I've got to say though that some of the 80's style pictures are pretty laughable, especially the 80's sunglasses! Ironically, the author mentions how ludicrous things like sunglasses look when they go out of style!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Style Not For Me.......2006-10-08

I dislike the book on the basis of several factors. I would like to think of a photography book as an instructive book for creating photographic art. If the pictures in this book represent the end product of the book's instruction, I would trash the book. Fortunately, his text is much better. I find the pictures garish, overly saturated in color, poorly composed, poorly scaled, and in a few prints, the images were manufactured. He admits to assembling one or more pictures by using Photoshop to add insects to other pictures.

Secondly, graphic's art of the book is terrible on the basis of unbalanced font size and font style. On one page he will use 50+ point text, 14 point embolden text, and 7- thin text! The substance of the book appears in the 7- thin text. Who wants to read in 7 point thin type?

Thirdly, I don't like book's layout. The layout places the main subject of the pictures across two pages and the binding of the book!

On the positive side, it is clear that John worked patiently to capture the images of the insects, some of which in their own right are wonderful.

The bottom line is that I find the book very disturbing, and had I kept the receipts, I would return the book to Amazon in favor of another.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2006-08-15

I have a strong interest in photography & have shot over three thousand photos this year. I never realized how restricted I had become. After reading John's magnificent book, I have become inspired to break out of the circle & into a more creative outlook. His photos are not only inspiring, but beautiful. The techniques are fun & limitless. I have shot plenty of macro subjects, but not in the way he has, nor have those concepts ever crossed my mind. Also, the language & helpful hints have the reader (me) eager to learn more. I enjoyed the book very much & know I will keep going back to it when I feel unimaginative, or on days when it seems that there is nothing to shoot - he has shown me that there are a lot of interesting things to shoot, you just have to be willing to open your eyes. Close-Up is a book that I recommend to all photographers amateur or advanced - even if you have never used a camera outside of a snapshot, this book is jam-packed with stimulating photography & just may inspire you to go out & see what you can do!

5 out of 5 stars Astounding Photographs.......2004-09-10

I wish I could write two reviews of this book. One would be as a book on macrophotography techniques. I would give that book one star. The other would be as a book of close-up photographs. I would give this book five stars. The thrills I encountered in this book led me to the second choice.

John Brackenbury is a zoologist who has developed a distinctive style of macrophotography. He has developed special equipment that allows him not only to shot sharp, large pictures of insects, but also his own style of shooting which he calls panoramic close-up photography. His technique tries to place the camera in the position of an insect to view the world as an insect sees it. This means that not only are the photographed insects and plants tack-sharp but also the distant backgrounds like trees and buildings. He has conquered the problems of depth of field with a specialized camera that he built that can close down its aperture to f/256! He uses huge banks of special lights to provide illumination for this unusual camera.

What pictures he takes! As I write, I'm looking at a large picture of a locust in mid-flight from a leaf and both the leaf and the locust are in absolute focus. You can count the hairs on the locust's legs and see each sharply etched vein in its wing. I flip to another page and look at a chrysopa in flight, framed by the sharp foreground wings of another chrysopa. The only problem with these pictures is that the insects are so sharp, and the surroundings equally sharp that the pictures seem almost fake, because this is sharper than we can see with the human eye.

Moreover these pictures are not just technically superior. The author has captured a strange beauty that no human can see with the naked eye.

The author has also captured some pictures that are not of insects or plants that use the same techniques, like that of a huge pair of earrings in the foreground with a much smaller woman wrapped in a shawl in the distant background, both in full focus. While these pictures exploit the technique, they leave me wondering just what is going on.

The other side of the coin is that although the book is subtitled "Creative Techniques for Successful Macrophotography", I learned nothing that I could use in my own work. Even if I thought I could build a camera like Brackenbury's, there certainly isn't enough of an explanation to begin to point me in the right direction. Most photographers will learn more about close-ups of the natural world by reading the 27 pages on the subject contained in John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide".

And yet the pictures are so magnificent that even if I haven't learned a single thing about how I might replicate his technique, I was inspired to try to improve my own macrophotography.
