James Patterson and Peter de Jonge's The Beach House opens with the death of a handsome townie on Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons, where being a single-digit millionaire is laughable and being poor is unthinkable. Peter Mullen is a high school dropout who parks cars at the private bashes of the superwealthy Barry and Campion Neubauer. When Peter is found dead on the beach, the Neubauers and their friends insist that he drowned, but his brother Jack, a law student who saw Peter's body, knows he was beaten to death. As Jack uncovers evidence of his brother's secret life, he begins to realize that the very rich are indeed different from the rest of us. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and Jack's patiently plotted payback for Peter's death is one that the Hamptons will not soon forget.

There are no big surprises in The Beach House, but it's vintage Patterson, with plenty of action, villains with hearts blacker than obsidian, and a working-class hero who pulls himself up by the bootstraps. Patterson and de Jonge previously coauthored the inspirational golf romance Miracle on the 17th Green, but this new game of money, mayhem, and murder clearly suits them to a tee. --Barrie Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Quick, Suspenseful Read of the Summer.......2007-07-27

I could not put this book down. I especially enjoyed Patterson's reference to real life scenarios and applaud his accounts in multicultural writings and versatility from music references to basketball. The book will keep you on your toes. I wish there could have been a better ending as I really liked 'Tom'. Definitely recommend it especially for the not so serious reader, like myself. I thoroughly enjoyed it and you will too.

2 out of 5 stars Beach House - Not my favorite by a long shot.......2007-07-19

I just never got into this book. I'm an avid fan of James Patterson's books... I've purchased so many at airports across the country it is almost comical.

But this one never really drew my in like most others. There just wasn't enough depth to any of the characters and their relationships to each other were missing something. And the ending just did not make sense. I didn't feel there were enough clues to lead me to say "aha" at the end.

Short story - I was disappointed. I won't quit reading... just disappointed in this yarn.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-11

I loved this book! I read it in a day and a half, couldnt put it down. Loved the plot-people taking the law into their own hands. highly recommend!

3 out of 5 stars BY James Patterson & Peter De Jonge?.......2007-06-14

I think Patterson could have done without the help. I like Patterson's style and move-along plots. This plot however, with the autopsy on Peter's body getting passed off as a drowning-suicide, was a disappointment. The rich buy the courts, but not with the kinds of evidence the coroner presented. The ending really frosts the cake when they have their "Kangaroo Court" in the abandoned Beach house over a two-day span. Since it wasn't terrible, I can only give three stars.

J. P. Landry, author of Hazard 666

What a waste of time spending that much time, then to have an ending that doesn't make sense at all!! Feel that I wasted my time and money on this one. After recently readingJudge and Jury , hard to believe its written by same person. If you want a good one, pick up Judge & Jury.

Book Description

Advance praise for Sharehouse Confidential "John Blesso is the maestro of his Fire Island orchestra, madly conducting the participants in his hedonistic social experiment. It's an entertaining punch that connects, making it surely the best beach read of summer or, better yet, the television successor to Sex and the City."
- Graham Murphy, McSweeneys

Sharehouse Confidential: Sex, Drugs, and the Single Life Inside an Epicurean Beach House, an uproarious memoir, recounts the adventures of author John Blesso and two-dozen New York City singles living under the same communal roof.

Desperate for distraction after shelving his seven hundred-page novel, Blesso renovates a seven-bedroom beach house on Fire Island, and serves up full-throttle epicurean living. Blesso and his sharehouse members, friends and strangers alike, madly search for a soul mate-or maybe just another Saturday night escapade. He tries to observe rule number one: don't hook up with other house members. But when the late-night jacuzzi sessions start bubbling, leaving only bikini bottoms standing guard, rules are easily broken.

Achingly funny, Sharehouse Confidential charts the battle between body and soul as Blesso strives to make sense of post-9/11 America.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not what you're thinking...........2007-07-26

I was expecting a completely fluffy book about a bunch of jerks. What I found was excellent writing that was humorous, contemptous of the Bush white house (extra special bonus!), and dedicated to painting a picture of a group of people that love food, drink, a good laugh, and a beautiful view. Makes you want to be in the house, no matter your age...

4 out of 5 stars What happens next??.......2007-06-01

This is a story in need of a sequel. Will John become the next big fish in the little pond of Kismet? What will happen when Bush leaves the White House, the drugs start fading, and now matter how old he gets the girls stay the same age? Could the main character of this book run far or fast enough to leave the summer of 2005?

This book was a good, light read. The author's voice translated onto the page in a casual way that coaxed me into immediately trusting him as a narrator, despite his rakish reputation. Trust is needed in a story with so many aspects. Blesso ties in the story lines nicely. You can tell the rhythm Blesso writes in is the rhythm he speaks in as some of the paragraphs were obviously stories honed through countless tellings long before they reached the page. On one hand I appreciated the tact he showed his friends and lovers but I would have enjoyed more emotional depth on all sides; as is, I found it hard to keep the characters straight based on their physical descriptions. Sharehouse Confidential could have been meatier, but it must have been hard to flesh out characters you only get to know over a few weekends. It was nice to hear about an American struggling with our role in the war--boiled down, this is more than just a "summer read". I would have enjoyed another 100 pages.

I'd recommend this book to my friends and I would definitely buy the sequel to find out what becomes of the hardest working man in sharehouse business.

5 out of 5 stars Not your mother's beach book.......2007-04-23

While I could easily describe Sharehouse Confidential as a great beach read, I wouldn't be doing the book, or John Blesso, justice if I stopped there. True, it has the qualities of a great beach read--it's sexy, funny, and breezy. But John's candor and honesty also give this memoir a refreshingly raw feel that we rarely get with all of the glossiness that has become our culture--kind of like Kismet itself.

Buy this book and plan to read for a long stretch. You won't be able to put it down until the end--and then you'll be disappointed that it's over.

5 out of 5 stars Just delicious!.......2007-04-20

A great memoir is more than the story being told - it's so much about the voice of the author, and right from the introduction, one can't help but love the sound of John Blesso's voice - smart and funny and thoughtful and sexy. The fact that he tells a great story makes this book impossible to put down unfinished.

And it is a fun read - clever and flirty and indulgent. All-weekend parties, covert hook-ups, table dancing, where the participants are real and interesting and funny and sometimes brilliant, and sometimes flawed. It's also strikingly poignant at moments - the idyllic life as an escape from scary times in a scary world. Food and drink and sex and community as counter-programming to the fear and hate. There's stuff that makes you think, and stuff that makes you laugh. He really strikes a wonderful balance, and it just makes for a highly enjoyable read.

I read this book at breakneck speed, at times literally laughing out loud (amusing to my fellow commuters, I'm sure). The included recipes at the end are an added bonus, though I barely skimmed them before turning right back to page one to read it all over again.

Like the salacious and decadent meals that title each chapter, Sharehouse Confidential is absolutely delicious.

5 out of 5 stars More than a guilty pleasure.......2007-04-14

First things first...the book is a delight. I was enthralled and captivated inside of three sentences, and based on the title and subject matter, it seemed destined to be a book that I would recommend to others with the verbal headline "it's a guilty pleasure." To my surprise, while the elements that often serve as the building blocks to a guilty pleasure (they are right there in the title) are certainly in effect, this is a beautifully written memoir of a man on a journey. For those looking for an infectious romp, the hedonism is rampant and plentiful; though at it's core, the author paints an intimate and vivid picture of the path that led him to buy and maintain this summer haven. His courage, his fears, his setbacks, and his ever present willingness to wear life like a loose garment really had me rooting for him. As each page would turn (and they turn fast!), I found myself enraptured as John attempts (not always successfully) to ride the line between headmaster and housemember. Not to mention, the details of what it takes to run a house like this one gave me a newfound respect for anyone who takes on such a project. The house, the participants, and the events are described in such masterly detail; I will say this: I have been sober for ten years....I have a wife and two kids...and I still want to join John Blesso's sharehouse. Do yourself a favor....buy this book!

Wonderful recipes. The lemon cake is the best. Probably not the best cookbook for those allergic to shellfish.

5 out of 5 stars Take this to the farmers' market!.......2005-09-30

We bought a copy of this for our beach house hosts and liked it so much I had to get one for home, too. As another (more negative) reviewer noted, none of the recipes is earth-shatteringly new, but rather natural combinations of ingredients that you might not come up with on your own and want to try. In this way, the book reminds me of Cucina Fresca or Cucina Rustica, which are similar in sort of simply preparing good, fresh food. The author has a nice, casual writing style. Beautiful pictures, nicely laid out. I use this book a lot along with Italian Vegetarian (Jack Bishop) when I have some produce or a seasonal veg and am wondering how best to use it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Recipes which are quickly and easily prepared.......2005-09-07

There are numerous theme cookbooks on the market, so what makes Barbara Scott-Goodman's The Beach House Cookbook a winner? For one thing, it uses the theme of seaside freshness to create feasts based on seafood and fresh vegetables. So readers should have an affection for fresh seafood in order to appreciate The Beach House Cookbook. From an Oyster and Vegetable Bisque to Grilled Swordfish with Mango Salsa, emphasis is on recipes which are quickly and easily prepared, lending to beach picnics and vacation cooking.

5 out of 5 stars Already well splattered. I keep it next to the salt........2005-07-01

This is a great cookbook! Made the lobster and roasted veg salad last night and got raves.
The best thing about it is just looking through the table of contents or leafing to a random page on your way out to shop - it sparks a better idea than you might have had for what to cook that night. Also, every recipe has a least one special "spark" idea or component that lifts the dish to a place that makes the meal special and memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Seafood - who could ask for more?.......2005-07-01

The table of contents started me drooling (look in the See-Inside-the-Book above). The book makes good use of readily available seafood plus fresh fruits (for fruit cobbler or a sundae). Sure, the recipes may be found in a variety of cookbooks, but this pulls together the ones you want while at the ocean.
A few recipes use ingredients that I wouldn't have on hand (capers, chickpea flour), but most are straight forward. The color photographs really whet your appetite.
This was favorably reviewed by the Baltimore Sun saying it "captures the evocative moods of summer."

Known for her moving characters and emotional honesty, Mary Alice Monroe brings readers a beautifully rendered story that explores the fragile yet enduring bond between mothers and daughters.

Carette Rutledge thought she'd left her Southern roots and troubled family far behind. But an unusual request from her mother -- coming just as her own life is spinning out of control -- has Cara heading back to the scenic Lowcountry of her childhood summers. Before long, the rhythms of the island open her heart in wonderful ways as she repairs the family beach house, becomes a bona fide "turtle lady" and renews old acquaintances with her mother that she will earn life's most precious lessons -- true love involves sacrifice, family is forever and the mistakes of the past can be forgiven.

MONROE IS A WONDERFUL AUTHOR,AND HER NOVELS ABOUT THE LOW COUNTRY IN THE SOUTH ARE SIMPLY CAPTIVATING. SHE AND ANNE SIDDONS MAKES YOU WANT TO GO TO THE SOUTH LOW COUNTRY AND STAY THERE FOREVER. THIS STORY IS WONDERFUL AND IS SO REAL AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS,AND FAMILY MEMBERS SO OFTEN HAPPEN IF PEOPLES LIVES. LOVED THE BOOK !

4 out of 5 stars Great Summer Read.......2007-07-16

The Beach House was a great summer read. I have always wanted to spend
a summer in a beach house on the east coast and this story had me wanting
it even more. Learning about the Loggerhead turtles was an extra
added bonus. Looking forward to reading other Mary Alice Monroe books.

3 out of 5 stars Well written but boring.......2007-06-29

This book is an easy summer read, very well written, with an interesting theme of the loggerhead turtles. However, I found the story itself very uninteresting, nothing beyond what most of us have in our own families.

4 out of 5 stars Carolina family dynamics.......2007-06-22

An odd mix of realistic situations for the main character with an undertone of romance novel in the latter part of the story. The love of coastal nature and realistic, but inspiring, treatment of relationships among the women made this a book my wife and I have given away to others. Definitely light and fun enough to warrant a place in the beach bag for your next trip to the beach house.

5 out of 5 stars The Beach House.......2007-05-29

I read the Beach House and fell in love with the characters. Couldn't wait then to read the sequel. Mary Alice Monroe creates great peolple and educates you at the same time. The turtles were wonderful and so interesting.

Book Description

A chronicle of a solitary year spent on a Cape Cod beach, The Outermost House has long been recognized as a classic of American nature writing. Henry Beston had originally planned to spend just two weeks in his seaside home, but was so possessed by the mysterious beauty of his surroundings that he found he 'could not go.' Instead, he sat down to try and capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to: the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued that, 'The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.' Seventy-five years after they were first published, Beston's words are more true than ever.

Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews.
Your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks.

On The Outermost House: Henry Beston's account of his year on Cape Code in the 1920s is a classic. It's worth reading just for the poetic lines. Here is an example:

"For a moment of night we have a glimpse of ourselves and of our world islanded in its stream of stars--pilgrims of mortality, voyaging between horizons across eternal seas of space and time."

Highly recommended!

I particularly enjoyed this book as it is set in an area that has a large simularity to where I grew up and I particularly liked the lonliness and bleakness that I identified with.

5 out of 5 stars Beston is without a doubt the best!.......2006-10-03

I wouldn't dream of heading for the Cape without this book--Henry Beston captures the Cape more beautifully than any other author. THE OUTERMOST HOUSE is one of those enchanting books which improves with each rereading.

Since Amazon hasn't provide a link between Outermost House, by Beston, and The Winter Beach, by Charlton Ogburn (ISBN 068809418X), I would like to suggest here that, if you like Outermost House, you will almost certainly enjoy The Winter Beach, as well. From the jacket description: "A naturalist and man of rare wisdom shares with you his journeys along the Atlantic shore."

3 out of 5 stars Bird-watching the Soul.......2005-11-13

There's an H.G. Wells story (in Bloom's anthology for children) called "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes"; the title character is struck by lightning and undergoes a visual hallucination in which he believes he sees a desolate island, or as he puts it, "Dark sea and sunrise! And yet I'm sitting on a sofa in old Boyce's room!...God help me!" I didn't think much of the story at the time I read it, but now, on reading "The Outermost House," I find it a remarkably excellent and relevant critique of American nature writing. Surrounded by friends and family, Davidson's gaze is turned inward-or rather projected far outward-to a pristine setting that becomes a horror to the reader.

I'm surprised I didn't like Beston's book better. The introduction makes comparisons to Whitman, which drives me crazy. There is no triad of selves; in fact, I didn't find the author good company, with his external, concrete eye. The objective details never gain in implicit resonance like those in Hemingway's "Great Two-Hearted River," for example, in which concrete actions assume ritualistic meaning. The book is a quick read, and it's a good thing, because there's only so much I can take of foam, little birds, wind direction, and dunes. (There's something passive about the narrator; I'm trying to remember something Bloom wrote about Robinson Crusoe in this context.) Perhaps it's a matter of temperament; I mean, I'm as introverted as they come, but I was lonely reading this book, and I kept waiting for augmenting meanings; perhaps it appeals to a more concrete, introverted type, a bird-watcher in other words.

The prose is beautiful in places, but it's not exactly Proust on the ocean, either. It's always so curious to me that American writers, to get elemental or visionary, go to nature, while Europeans still get to enjoy culture. I guess we don't have a Bois, like Proust, with which to associate feelings of longing, nor do we have earthy peasants or Duchesses whose very names carry traces of soil. And isn't there something ultimately selfish in the isolated nature-observer? Maybe that's part of the appeal-the freedom from the demands of family and culture-the illusion of primal interconnectedness. In any event, not Whitman! Matthew Arnold, sure! Ironically enough, I felt Arnold's "melancholy, long, withdrawing roar" every other paragraph. Ultimately, this is a thoroughly PAGAN book in which the soul-less thrumming of cold insect life is celebrated, the sun is worshipped, and human sacrifice (in the form of deaths and drownings at sea) is required. Have we progressed no farther in the past millennium or so? Cold comfort.

It's in the path of boats coming from Miami to the West Indies and is the place to see in the Caribbean before you die. Casa de Campo is the Caribbean most complete resort by far where any possible hobby in the world could practiced at world renowned conditions -besides skiing, except if you change it for water-sky-. The book about the Casa de Campo's Marina is definitely a 5 start in class, quality and content. This is the real thing in Caribbean Elegance and Luxury where you'll be able to find some of the most exclusive houses in the region.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Keep Secret in the Caribbean unveils........2007-03-02

This is the only book available about Marinas from an architectural standpoint. Blueprints, sketches and more than 300 full-color pictures are a never ending source for one of the most luxurious approach to Caribbean Architecture. It's about the renowned Marina at Casa de Campo, La Romana, Dominican Republic and is a must for anyone willing see from the inside out as many options as possible to recreate a tropical paradise despite if it's and apartment or a houses under 2,000 sqf or a masterpiece above 20,000 sqf.
In contrast with W.R. Blain's book for "Marina Developments" -That is an excellent and maybe the only book about Marinas from a structural standpoint- this one is an architectural approach to Marinas and all the elements around it such as Yacht Club, Apartments, Houses, Restaurants and all related services. It's full of details and references in a text that is catchy and easy to read. My only concern was that I thought it was pricy in the first place despite that it was printed and bounded in Italy, but Blain's book is above the $250 and this one is more related to interior design and architecture so it's worth 5 out 5 starts.

3 out of 5 stars Silly stuff, this.......2007-09-29

This book begins as one of Patterson's trademarke mindless reads. I love a good mindless read sometimes as they do wonders for clearing out all of the cobwebs in my brain dedicated to serious matters.

Beach House whipped along quickly, suspense building, carrying the reader along on a brother's quest to bring justice to the dearly departed when the whole story just gets stupid. By the end of this book, I wasn't sure if I should just laugh, or laugh really hard.

5 out of 5 stars A Page Turner.......2007-07-22

This one will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. The story of Jack Mullen and his family's quest to find the true story of his brother Peter's death will definitely keep you interested. I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars FAST PACED AND GOOD STORY.......2007-04-04

there are several not so good reviews here as everyone has different taste; but I loved this book. I read it in 3 days and could barely put it down. Action starts from the beginnig and does not let up. Great page turner as far as I am concerned..

2 out of 5 stars Fast food meets paperbacks.......2007-01-25

In "The Beach House" we're given Jack Mullen, a 2nd year law student and summer intern with one of New York's most prestigious law firms. The book opens with Mullen's impulsive and irresponsible younger brother, Peter, working as a parking valet at the annual summer party of a well-known billionaire. Peter is lured away from his duties to the nearby beach, where he's shot and his death covered up to look like a drowning. It's up to his older brother, Jack, to find out what really happened that night and make sure that Peter's killer comes to justice.

Sounds innocuous enough, but the way Mullen eventually decides to get justice was not just implausible, it was utterly ridiculous. It was almost as though Patterson consulted with the local 6th grade class to come up with an ending. Yeah, it was that hokey.

On a positive note, the presence of De Jonge as a co-author was discernable here. The writing was actually a bit better than the last few solo Patterson novels - not necessarily in terms of plot, dialog, or character depth, but in terms of some original metaphors and turns of phrases. They seemed like they were coming from fresh blood, and I'm assuming De Jonge was responsible for that.

Also, although devoting the prologue or first chapter to the events of the murder in a mystery/thriller novel is nothing new, it was a bit of a twist to do this in first person narrative format using the voice of the murder victim himself.

Having read nearly a dozen Patterson novels now, and having reviewed several of them here on Amazon, a disappointing trend has emerged with this author. With Patterson churning out 5-6 novels a year now, it definitely shows in declining quality. Nobody can be that prolific without having to skimp on ingredients. Even the typography in these books is repetitive, along with the annoyingly short 2-3 page chapters. Bottom line: I can't escape the feeling that I'm being served fiction from a drive through window. About the only thing missing is a tinny speaker and the words "Do you want fries with that?"

From a larger perspective, Patterson's books reflect an American culture that has totally lost the concept of "moderation" and instead insists on "saturation." The end result of this "if one is good, 20 is better" mentality is that there ins't much good to say about quality, only quantity. I'd be much happier with one decent book a year from this author rather than the half a dozen mediocre ones that he feels compelled to crank out.

2 out of 5 stars I'm not cheering.......2006-09-02

The jacket of this novel promised I would be cheering at the end - but I wasn't. The concept here is that a young lawyer, frustrated by a justice system that has allowed his brother's killer to remain free, kidnaps the parties involved and televises a multi-day trial of his own in order to convict the killer in the court of public opinion.

This is just ridiculous. The final "courtroom scenes" are hard to believe, and the notion that the authorities wouldn't be able to trace the source of the television signal over course of the trial is preposterous. It is impossible to believe that such a hair-brained idea could ever work and no reasonably intelligent young lawyer would think that it could.

Of course, in Patterson's novel it does work (that's where the cheering comes in). Patterson has written some decent novels but this isn't one of them

Book Description

The cottage holds a special place in our minds and hearts as a place of retreat, peace, and relaxation as well as an expression of a family's own personality. In this elegantly illustrated book, architect and teacher Catherine Tredway presents 25 unique plans for a variety of cottages designed to meet a wide range of needs and lifestyles.

Inspired by the many regions of North America, Tredway's designs feature the

distinctive architectural elements of an Adirondack cottage in the woods, a Minnesota lakeside cottage, a California cottage by the sea, and more. In addition, each design incorporates architectural details unique to a particular region and is shown in the author's full-color rendering accompanied by elevation views, floor plans, and close-up drawings and photographs of architectural details. The text highlights the historical background of the architectural style on which the design draws.

Part practical plans book and part inspirational idea book, this exploration of the beauty, function, and style of the cottage is a must for cottage owners, would-be cottage owners, and those who just like to dream.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-08-03

The book was okay, not quite what I thought it was going to. It does have some interesting plans, but not what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars 25 Plans for Retreats, Cabins and Beach Houses.......2007-01-29

Nicely illustrated exteriors and floor plans, good photographs, lots of suggestions, and a bit of education thrown in. Well worth reading.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2006-08-16

There are some ok ideas in this book but it suffers greatly from a cramped layout. It's not easy to browse and most of the photo are cropped so close one almost feels claustrophobic just flipping through the pages

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-01-23

Although there are pictures scattered throughout the book, they are mainly of small details and accents, rather than a total view of the houses. Also, it seemed that some of the pictures were not even of the design that was being featured. I found it difficult to get any perspective of relative dimensions or the overall feel of the design from simple line drawings and floor plans. Perhaps a better book for someone more familiar with architectural drawings than for someone just starting out and looking for inspiration. Finally, not many of the designs were of what I would call a cottage, with square footage at, or higher than most average homes.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Dreamer.......2001-11-03

This lovely book proves that a picture is worth a thousand words. I am in the beginning stages of planning my dream retirement home, and I have been looking for a few select books to convey the sense of style I want. This book is the best I have found so far. Tredway's designs are very well thought out -both beautiful AND liveable looking. There are lots of photos of completed structures along with the floor plans and elevations. Please note that as of 11/03/01, the web-site listed in the book is not working. Highly recommended book.

Book Description
A pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes.

This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn't happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table.

In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day.

"What Size Is Your Cholesterol?"
An Essay by Arthur Agatston, MD
You may think that the title of this article is a mistake and that I meant to say, "What Number Is Your Cholesterol?" But the fact is that the size of your cholesterol is just as important as the total number. If that surprises you, there is a good chance that much of what you think you know about cholesterol is wrong and that what you don't know about cholesterol could be killing you.

Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. As I explain in The South Beach Heart Program, the earlier you know where you stand in terms of your risk for heart disease, the greater your chance of preventing a heart attack or stroke in the future.

Before I go into how you can find out the size of your cholesterol, let me give you a little background on cholesterol in general.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The South Beach Heart Program.......2007-09-22

I am a Registered Nurse and believe that this book WILL save lives if people will use his program. I brought my total cholesterol down 80 points in just 3 months-in my case, using old-fashioned oatmeal and 2 tbsp. milled flaxseed EVERY morning for breakfast and THEN following the South Beach Diet for the rest of the day. (I cannot go almost completely without carbs, it doesn't work for me.)My HDLs (good) are OVER 85 and my LDLs (bad) are less than 120. Triglycerides were great, at less than 100.My doctor was so shocked, he searched my records to make sure he had not prescribed a statin medication! I hope this is not too technical and helps you.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2007-09-07

From the author/cardiologist of the popular "South Beach Diet" comes "The South Beach Heart Program" -a book designed to get and keep your heart in shape via a 4 step plan.

Step one is getting on a good diet. It should come to no surprise that the diet plan recommended is the heart healthy South Beach Diet. Step two is the exercise portion and the book recommend walking and strengthening exercises, particularly your core. The rationale here is that you can't keep your heart strong and exercise if your other muscles are weak. Step three is about getting the right tests. In other words, the earlier you get the tests, the better your chances are of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And finally, step four is getting the right medications one might need.

Good for anyone concerned about being heart healthy, I recommend this book for due to its comprehensive discussion of its subject in plain language. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers needing help making healthy lifestyle changes. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Enlighting.......2007-08-27

Gave me the tools to help myself. Wish I had the book twenty years ago.

2 out of 5 stars The South Beach Heart Program .......2007-07-06

I thought it fell short in providing "do's and dont's" for the diet. It was a wealth of information on the diagnosis and treatment of heart desease. I was looking for step by step instructions on how to follow the diet, I did not get much information at all on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The South Beach Heart Program: The 4-Step Plan that Can Save Your Life.......2007-05-26

This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all adults and probably on an exit exam for high school students. I have bought five copies of the book and given four away to friends and family. I will probably buy a few more. This book tells the reader how to analyze the problem, measure it and deal with it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Cookbook for South Beach Quick Meals!.......2007-09-24

This book is exactly as described. It has recipes that we have already used more than once! It is the only cookbook I have been using since we received it in the mail!

4 out of 5 stars It is Good, But is it Complete?.......2007-09-20

There is a lot to The South Beach Diet that makes it so popular, and this cookbook makes a perfect addtion to the diet book. However, I think that we in North America, while chasing the perfect body, forgot about what really matters - the perfect health.

I am a creature that trusts everybody, but not without a dose of skepticism. Therefore I always make a point of trying new approaches on my own before expressing any opinion. After going trough The South Beach Diet I realized that Agatston is just updated version of old Atkins. Although these two low carb approaches certainly bring good results from the point of loosing weight, I am not really convinced that this is what one needs to focus on. First of all, it is a hard diet to follow, and sooner or later one is bound to break some of the rules. Secondly, I find that in a healthy diet we need carbs the same way as we need fats and proteins.

Out of all approaches to losing weight, the one that makes most sense to me is presented by Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year" Using simple language he talks abut all aspect of health and longevity. Following some simple food combination guidelines, and not letting your stomach direct your actions are the basic things that one needs to do. As the author advises: "Eat to live instead of living to eat!" I think that this is the most important thing when considering nutrition. South Beach Diet is good and working, but Agatston missed this one point...

5 out of 5 stars good addition to the diet book.......2007-09-14

This cookbook is a good supplement to the book. It provides a number of tasty alternatives that were fairly easy to prepare.
