1 out of 5 stars This book has been done before, called Missed Fortune 101.......2007-09-22

Sad to see people trying to ride the coattails of another book and rip it off so blatantly. The orignal book called Missed Fortune 101 introduces the world to these strategies. Well Stop Sitting comes in and basically changes a word here and a word there to try and be different. For example Missed Fortune 101 talks about "going down the highway of life with one foot on the gas and one on the brake" Ms. Snow talks about going down the highway with 4 flat tires and a broken windshield...Come on!

Read Missed Fortune 101 Missed Fortune 101: A Starter Kit to Becoming a Millionaireto read the real story first, Read Stop Sitting for a rehash, if you like that kind of stuff...

I know I'm gonna write a book called Elbib and have it start out with a guy named Aaron and a girl named Emily who live in the jungle, then get kicked out of the jungle for eating the forbidden vegetable...

5 out of 5 stars Looking for answers.......2007-08-19

I, too, was in awe after reading this book. The ideas are presented in a simple, easy to understand way, and it seems to me to be very logical. I'm no financial genius, rather a former math teacher and the numbers seem to work on paper. But, really, after the awe has worn off and reality hits, what's the catch? This seems too easy. If this idea has been in existance for several years, then why hasn't it caught on with the "masses?" Why don't more financial advisors recommend this? Is there something I'm missing or does it really work that simply and just nobody knows about it? Somebody....give me the real scoop!

1 out of 5 stars Very, Very dangerous book.......2007-08-02

As I began to read this book, my first challenge was to get over the unearned arrogance of the author. Marion Snow may have a "scientific mind" and have a little experience in the mortgage industry selling people mortgages, but she is no financial planner.

The book is absolutely full of errors and misrepresentations of how some very complex financial products work. She literally demonizes financial planning professionals who have spent years of their lives helping clients and studying the ever changing landscape of both financial planning, estate planning, as well as the Internal Revenue Code.

Some of her VERY dangerous errors are as follows:

First, nearly all of her calculations discuss saving taxes at a 30 or 33% tax rate. While this sounds good, the average American is nowhere near the 33% tax bracket. The 33% tax bracket does not begin for most married Americans until they have over $195,000 of annual income.

Secondly, the insurance products that she describe do not function as she indicates. On page 110, she casually mentions that her insurance strategy will work as "long as you are careful not to deplete your cash value." She does not mention that the "tax advantaged policy loans" she advocates are 1)charged interest by the insurance company, and 2) taxable if the policy lapses in later years. Additionally, she neglects to mention that Universal life policies have increasing costs which will cause them to lapse using her strategy.

Third, all of her calculations are "assumed and hypothetical." They do not address real numbers. About halfway though the book she indicates she "got her insurance license" just to verify her findings. Unfortunately, an insurance license is viewed by most credentialed financial planners with the same reverence that training wheels are viewed by Olympic bicycle racers...

Fourth, her mortage strategies advocate taking illegal tax deductions - the tax deductions she describes are not allowable to the degree the advocates, in the tax brackets she uses as examples. The deductions "phase out" well before a taxpayer can use them to the degree she illustrates. Simply put - the numbers are INCORRECT.

Ms. Snow should spend a few years in school and learn what she is talking about - and a few more years working with real world financial clients -before being arrogant enough to throw stones at those who do.

She is flat wrong in many areas and will hurt a great many people who take her cutesy approach to financial planning seriously.

1 out of 5 stars What's wrong with Stop Sitting on Your Assets.......2007-07-29

This book uses fuzzy math to reach predetermined conclusions.

No only is the math flawed, but what's worse is that the book ignores the tax code and 264(a)3 specifically (which dramatically affects the concepts discussed in his books).

There is no such thing as a tax free, money management free, expense free "side fund" as she discusses in this book.

It is clear that the author does not understand how money grows in the real world and does not understand life insurance (which is ironic since the book is about building wealth using indexed equity life insurance).

Of all the books in the marketplace which discuss Equity Harvesting, this is by far the worst one.

1 out of 5 stars Why put down similar strategies?.......2007-07-28

This book basically says the same thing that the best selling book and the author that first introduced this concept says. It's very unfortunate that people that are teaching and discussing viable financial strategies feel they need to become so hysterical about putting down other people who recommend the same concept. I find the information in this book to be valid and certainly an excellent financial strategy for anyone who has home equity and the discipline not to spend it on consumables, if separated.

However, hysterical badgering of similar concepts makes me feel uncomfortable and drives me away from this presentation.

Anyone who's been to a high school or college has noted how students of the same race seem to stick together. Beverly Daniel Tatum has noticed it too, and she doesn't think it's so bad. As she explains in this provocative, though not-altogether-convincing book, these students are in the process of establishing and affirming their racial identity. As Tatum sees it, blacks must secure a racial identity free of negative stereotypes. The challenge to whites, on which she expounds, is to give up the privilege that their skin color affords and to work actively to combat injustice in society.

5 out of 5 stars Read it now. If you've read it, read it again........2007-10-02

I swear, this woman must have visited my High School cafeteria, because everything she writes hits home. I haven't read this in a few years, but it still rings home to me. Whenever I see it, I give the same reaction that I would get when other people who read it saw me with the book- "Oh, you're reading that!" It's not just about the black kids sitting into the cafeteria, it goes well beyond that. The stories shared are excellent. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Good insights, but a little histrionic.......2007-09-06

I am really glad I read this book, because it gave me a different perspective on some things. However, I think she was very biased: she never really considered any alternate viewpoints besides her own, and never gave a White viewpoint on racism any credit whatsoever (the most she did was agree that here is a problem). Some of the racist remarks she quoted I thought had more to do with cultural differences than racism, but I know that those assumptions are still annoying as I am part of a group that has a subculture and dislike it when people assume that I am part of that subculture as well. Some of those remarks, though, were just completely ridiculous as she went so far to complain about being washed "whiter than snow" in church. She completely and totally missed the point of that phrase which comes from the verse "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be washed whiter than snow." NOTHING to do with race whatsoever. It is a METAPHOR. Examples such as these are why I put "histrionic" in my title.

There are also other issues I wish she would have addressed/covered more thoroughly (ie, over-education about prejudice, reverse prejudice, perceived prejudice, etc). I felt like she was saying "WE are always right. White people are always wrong." And yes, I will agree that we are mostly in the wrong, but any psychologist worth anything knows it takes more than 1 to maintain a system. ie, Who are those actors in the media perpetuating those stereotypes? Not White people in makeup! So MAYBE it's not JUST evil White people forcing these stereotypes on everyone. I just wish she would have been a little more BALANCED.

Most of the studies she quoted were at least 10 years old. I checked one that I thought was very interesting, only to discover it was 25 years old. In the topic of racism, you have to stay up to date as things change so rapidly, hence the three stars. At times, I wanted to quit as it was occasionally tedious, querelous, and inconsequential. As I said, though, I am glad I read it as I did gain new insight. I REALLY liked how she handled the topic of racism with her kids, and I would like to do the same. She made some EXCELLENT points and had some good ideas. It is very thought provoking, even if you ultimately wind up not agreeing with her 100%. Surely, though, there must be a better book out there on racism. If not, someone should write one as this book is terrible for educating Whites on the problems of being Black (or another race). Of course, I am sure I will now be labeled as a "racist" for not agreeing with a PC book. Oh, wait, I am White, therefore, I am ALREADY a racist. Why bother trying? If you are White, according to Tatum, you can never win no matter what you do or how hard you try to stop the cycle.

4 out of 5 stars Tatem's thought provoking book is a must read!!.......2007-08-24

I was required to read this book before entering my freshman year of college. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the importance of every word written, feeling as if I would never finish the two hundred and twenty pages required. However, as I began to understand more of Tatem's philosophies, the book gradually became easier to get through. This is definitely not a quick, light read. Tatem's topics spark ideas which you immediately want to discuss with someone, obviously causing each chapter to take more time to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book though. Being brought up relatively race conscious I was surprised at how much I really didn't know. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is ready to further his/her racial awareness.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-07-25

This book arrived in time for school and I was very pleased with its condition.

4 out of 5 stars Provocative perspective.......2007-06-27

I found really good thinking in this book that helped me rethink my own position on race issues. the impact was, for me, breakthrough in some respects. The book is well worth the effort for anyone who seeks to be truly thoughtful about issues of race and diversity.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2005-08-29

When I first started thinking about starting my business in the early-mid 90's I picked up this book and devoured it. Then, it sat on my shelf as I pursued my 'corporate ladder' and took care of pets part-time.

When I decided to open my business full-time I again referred to the book. It really kept me inspired and ready to move forward. However, I did find that many of the suggestions were somewhat outdated -- using paper to track clients and schedules was never part of my plan -- but the basics of what they recommend you track/keep were great -- and I adapted the info to my on-line database. Since then, I've switched to a third-party service for an on-line database for client info, but the info I learned from the Mangolds' book was great.

I did read this book before Patti Moran's and tend to refer to it as the original 'bible' in my mind. But both books cover the same territory and give you a good overview of wht to expect. Petsitters are generally GREAT with pets and like the idea of spending time with them, but often have a hard time with the business side...this book is a great guide and reminder that you are in it to make money.;

As my business grew (http://www.peggiespets.com), I started helping other pet-sitters start or enhance their own businesses, ([...]) and this is a book that I include on my reading list for clients.

It's a good book that should be part of your learning library to continue to provide outstanding service to pets and their people!

5 out of 5 stars MY SUCCESS STORY.......2005-08-12

When I took early retirement after 25 years in the Banking industry and began a career in pet sitting, I found a treasure in "The Professional Pet Sitter." It is a gem not only in the useful information it contains, but also in the caring philosophy conveyed by its authors, Lori and Scott Mangold. Whether you are considering pet sitting as a full-time or part-time venture, this book is valuable. With time being a precious commodity in today's fast-paced world, I found that "The Professional Pet Sitter" provided clear-cut, easy-to-locate details on how to establish a successful service. As a further boon to launching a pet sitting career quickly and effectively, all appropriate business forms are included in the book. Thanks to the Mangolds' encouragement and expertise embodied in "The Professional Pet Sitter," my business is now in its sixth year and flourishing.

Bert Stern / Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting

Bert Stern, the famous commercial and fashion photographer of the 60s, was the last to be granted a sitting by Marilyn Monroe six weeks before her tragic death. The three-day session yielded nearly 2,600 pictures—fashion, portrait, and nude studies—of indescribable sensual and human vibrancy, of which no more than 20 were published. And yet these few photographs ineradicably shaped our image of Marilyn Monroe. This book presents the complete set of 2,571 photos. The monumental body of work by the master photographer and the Hollywood actress marks a climax in the history of star photography, both in quantity and quality. It is a unique affirmation of the erotic dimension of photography and the eroticism of taking photos, and it is the world's finest and largest tribute to Marilyn Monroe.

It just proves how captivating she was. And the pictures are incredible and haunting at the same time since she died 6 weeks later. If you are a devoted Marlyn Monroe fan, you need this book. It's worth the money because there are over 2500 pictures and it is not a small book. I believe it is 9 pounds! She's beautiful and the pictures definitely capture her beauty, even at age 36!

2 out of 5 stars Duplicity dogged the Dachshund......too many broken animal legs.......2007-09-16

I think this new author is good.

However, most people who read mysteries with animals do not want to read about kittens whose legs have been purposely broken. I stopped there. Then I went back. Next thing I knew, I was reading about a MONKEY whose legs had been purposely broken.

What is this thing the author has about having animals tortured like this?

I can't read her, which is too bad, because, aside from these animal torture scenes, I think she is good.

I could deal with the death of the dying Dachshund (sort of), but most writers who feature animals realize they are writing for animal lovers.

We are not looking for horror, or even the sadness.

I am so sorry this author can't do without the cruelty to animals in her mysteries. I sat down thinking I was going to have an entertaining read, and ended up depressed.

Could you try again, and leave out the animal torture?

We know animals are mistreated, and most of us contribute to funds to make sure they are not. We don't want to read about it in what I supposed was sort of a "cozy" mystery.

I definitely DO NOT recommend this to any animal lover with a heart.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent series.......2007-06-14

Another very nice job by Ms. Clement. Interesting story with a main character that is changing and growing as she works though her personal tragedy. The information on pet behaviors and care are a nice addition. Most of all the mystery is pausible and the characters are interesting. I vacation in Siesta Key and the author's local details and observations are right on the mark. Readers note: I am a very tough reviewer so consider my four stars a high recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been an excellent book but..........2007-06-06

I wish I could have given this book a higher rating. 99% of it is highly enjoyable with excellent writing, well-drawn and interesting characters, and a beautifully depicted setting. But, unfortunately, this otherwise terrific writer chose to throw in some really nasty bits of animal cruelty that ended up staying with me longer than the positive qualities of the book. I usually enjoy passing books along to my mother and sisters, but I really couldn't do that in this case as I know that they would find certain elements of the book far too disturbing.

5 out of 5 stars Good Series.......2007-06-03

I enjoyed both books in this series. I like the incidental information given about animal behavior, the Siesta Key setting, and the fact that Dixie is an interesting character. I like that she has depth and although she has men in her life she cares about and who care about her, she doesn't need to be rescued by them. (Must be something to do with her 3 showers a day and her endless supply of "clean white Keds" HA!) I'm looking forward to #3.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for dog lovers.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed Blaize Clement's writing style and her characterization of the main character. What makes this book infinitely enjoyable are the details around the Sarasota area. Having just visited, I felt part of the story due to the details.

I'm not a dog lover, but related to the story all the same. I look forward to reading more about Dixie.

Book Description

For the first time, a sitting judge blows the whistle on America’s out-of-control courts.

A judge for more than twenty years, Robert Dierker has enjoyed a distinguished legal career. But now that career may be on the line. Why? Because he is breaking the code of silence that has long kept judges from speaking out to present a withering account of how radical liberals run roughshod over the Constitution, waging war on the laws of nature, the laws of reason, and the law of God.

Even those outraged by America’s courts will be shocked by Judge Dierker’s story of activist judges, deep-pocketed special interest groups, pandering politicians, and others who claim to stand for tolerance, equal rights, and social justice, but actually stand for something quite different—something closer to totalitarianism.

Citing not only Judge Dierker’s own experiences but dozens of other recent court cases, The Tyranny of Tolerance shows how the courts enable left-wing activists to ram their dangerous agenda down the throats of the American people. Consider:

• Why do the courts claim the power to tax us?
• Why is a Christian fired when he voices opposition to his employer’s favoring homosexuals?
• Why are airline pilots sued and sent to “diversity training” for recommending that suspicious-looking people of Middle Eastern appearance be kept off planes?
• Why does a judge who defends a monument to the Ten Commandments in a courthouse lose his job?
• Why are speech codes imposed on employers, university students, lawyers (and judges!), while “artistic” indecency is protected from even the mildest regulation?
• Why are peaceful abortion protesters thrown in jail, their right to free speech crushed?
• Why are white and Asian students denied admission to colleges and universities in the name of “diversity”?
• Why is an enemy fighter captured in Afghanistan granted access to U.S. federal courts, overturning judicial precedent safeguarding the president’s wartime powers—to say nothing of common sense?

With this passionate insider’s account, Judge Dierker reminds Americans what’s at stake in the battle for the courts: the Constitution, the success of the war on terrorism, the freedom to worship God, the ability to keep our families safe, the institution of marriage, and much more.

Fortunately, Judge Dierker shows how we can defeat the radical liberals’ tyranny of tolerance. By wresting back control of the courts and restoring the legal, moral, and religious principles embedded in the Constitution, we can ultimately reclaim the republic the Founders bequeathed to us.

This makes Levin's Men in Black look like a scholarly book. Tyranny of Tolerance makes no attempt at considering the complexities of some of the questions that the author discusses. In fact, loaded with inconsistencies and incoherence, it is at best a rant. A simple example should suffice: he insists that judges should follow the intent of the Constitution and its plain meaning. If that is the case, he should argue that the narrow purpose of the 14th amendment was not to announce a broad principle of equal treatment, but a specific protection for black Americans. The Congress that wrote the amendment enacted affirmative action laws favoring blacks. Instead, like the judges he criticizes, Dieker "morphs" the amendment into a rule that he favors. Readers serious about understanding judging and the Supreme Court ought to read Kermit Roosevelt's book about Judicial Activism.

5 out of 5 stars A Needle of Truth out of the Haystack of Judicial Deception .......2007-05-27

Political Correctness is a passive aggressive form of tyranny but one of the most dangerous tyrannies nonetheless. It is passive because it is subtle and has the power to make its victims feel guilty for opposing it and thus easier to subjugate. It is dangerous because by the time we get fed up with it and decide to stand up to it most of the damage has already been done.

The Judicial code of silence is just such an example of this damage. How can sitting judges, with more job security than most Americans can dream of, be bludgeoned into silence so easily? Nothing more perfectly demonstrates the tyranny of political correctness, masquerading as "tolerance."

Judge Dierker as written a good book. He is bold and courageous for doing it and will no doubt suffer career ostracism, if not death threats, for it. He reminds me of the scientists who break their own code of silence to speak out on the hoax of anthropogenic global warming. The machinations of both of these elements of political correctness have the goal of transferring more control over the personal lives and finances of ordinary Americans to a government in the hands of the enemies of truth, justice and the oh-so-politically incorrect "American way."

If you are one of those who is fed up with being pushed around and dictated to by mad power hungry moonbats this book is for you. It affirms that you are not alone.

5 out of 5 stars The Code Exposed.......2007-05-27

"Tolerance" is one of those words that have a positive connotation so it is no surprise that the Democratic Party has co-opted it as one of its watchwords. However, in THE TYRANNY OF TOLERANCE, judge Robert Dierker insists that the drive to achieve tolerance has reached such a manic level that the word now implies tolerance for some is a zero sum game that inevitably results in intolerance for others. Such a wish to force tolerance on those whom the tolerant deem intolerant is now reflective in a broad swath that cuts across all sectors of America. Those who see themselves as dispensers of tolerance call themselves liberals, but Dierker more correctly terms illiberal liberals. As a circuit judge of the Twenty-Second Judicial Circuit of Missouri, Dierker, over a twenty year career on the bench has seen it all, and during those two decades has seen a negative transformation in the basic legal framework of his court and by extension, the United States. At the core of this metamorphosis is the evolving view held by the Left of the Constitution. Originally, seen as the cornerstone of our republic, it has slowly been eroded away from meaning what it says to what a leftist judiciary says it means. Now, the illiberal liberals use it to force an agenda on the very fabric of our society, one that includes filing "lawsuits to kick the Boy Scouts out of public parks, to get sodomy into a constitutional right, to throw peaceful abortion protestors in jail, to allow abortionists to pull babies three-quarters out of the way of the womb and kill them, to crush pro-lifers' rights of speech and assembly, to nullify the reproductive rights and parental rights of men, to bankrupt the firearms industry as a means of disarming a free people, to impose racial quotas on employment, and to eliminate God from the Pledge of Allegiance." (Page 3)

It is pretty clear that Dierker is a conservative judge who takes a view of society that includes a refusal to expect a guaranteed level playing field of wealth and justice. The Left, in his view, wishes a society that is based on a Marxist redistribution of wealth and a utopian guarantee of justice for all to be achieved by legislative fiat. Historically, whenever any society is instituted under Marxist rules of wealth redistribution and socialist guarantees of employment and institutionalized multiculturalism, the result has inevitably been economic collapse as with the Soviet Union or social dysfunction as with most of multicultural Western Europe. These calamities Dierker is determined to avoid. In an overly brief coda, he notes how a concerned citizenry can reverse this decades long slide toward collapse and dysfunction. He writes that voters can demand judges who will decide issues based on what the Constitution says, and not on what agenda they would prefer it contain. Congress must be persuaded to curtail runaway judges by explicitly abolishing corrosive and divisive policies like affirmative action. And finally, Presidents must be chosen at least partly on their willingness to defy power-hungry supreme courts as Lincoln did when he authorized suspension of habeas corpus in Maryland in 1863. Dierker exhorts us to realize that it is not too late to wish to be intolerant of the perverted brand of tolerance now bandied about by the illiberal liberals.

This book is very importent to any who are concerned about the current fact the liberal judiciay is out of control and taking us down the road to complete judicial autocracy.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! The Truth about the Legal Thought Police Pogrom.......2007-03-20

WOW!! This Book is a Rare Find - and a Very Important One.
Using Clear and Unambiguous language to explain in straightforward terms the current state of Constitutional Law and the Judiciary in modern Weimar Amerika - Judge Dierker has both produced a Masterwork of American Letters, and Turned Over the Rock on the Ugly underside to the attack on our Country by Radicals within the alleged `Legal Profession' using the pretext of `Tolerance' as a platform for a Draconian Political Thought Policing attack on Society and the Constitution.

For those thinking of attending Law School (or already there) - this book is Vital, particularly as it covers Basic Issues that are Now Censored by Law Schools and Constitutional Law Texts (like Justice Scalia's Dissent in Romer v. Evans - where he discussed Homosex Bias in Legal Education - and was Censored from the Cohen & Varat Text Book for it) - and does so in a refreshingly candid manner.

In fact, this book is so complete and yet concise, that if one supplements this book with the Cases it Cites (available on the Net for free) - it would serve as a Far Better Constitutional Law Text than most of those on the market. I say this as a Constitutional Law Scholar / First Amendment advocate who graduated with Distinction from the McGeorge Law School - and was threatened with extreme physical violence by a Professor (Myers) while a student in retaliation for daring to support Justice Scalia's (censored - but not forgotten) dissents in class.

For those who are Not Lawyers - Read This Book!! In barely 200 Pages Judge Dierker lays out the Major Cases and Players and Scams that are the stock in trade of the Radical Gender Feminist / Homosex Attack on Society. He does so in an easily understandable and lucid manner, that allows Citizens (and not just the self anointed `legal elite') to understand what is really going on, and how the scam is being run. For many the legal system and Supreme Court is a mystery beyond comprehension - but in the Tyranny of Tolerance the system is dissected in a manner understandable by all.

This Book truly lays bare the inner workings of the Legal System - and Identifies the Strategies and Tactics that have been used to turn it in to the Enemy of the People, and a tool for the self anointed power elites to enforce their Pander or Perish agenda - BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) through the Tyranny of the `Tolerance' police.

Book Description

Richly researched, told with sweep, speed, and balance, here is a biography of the man who was arguably the Plains Indians' most revered, most visionary leader. Tatan'ka Iyota'ke--Sitting Bull--was the great Hunkpapa Lakota chief who helped defeat Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. But more than that, he was a profound holy man and seer, an astute judge of men, a singer and speaker for his people's ways. In the face of the army, the railroad, the discovery of gold, and the decimation of the buffalo, he led his band to Canada rather than "come in" to the white man's reservation. To render Sitting Bull in context, the author explores the differences in white and Indian cultures in the nineteenth century and shows the forces at work--economic pressure, racism, technology, post-Civil War politics in Washington and in the army--that led to the creation of a continental nation at the expense of a whole people.

Illustrated with photographs and drawings by Albert Marrini

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Outdated Sources and Colonial Attitude.......2003-10-01

Marrin's book makes significant use of outdated sources, many before 1970, as well as romantic photographs and illustrations. Although the book is impressive for a young adult audience, with its bibliography and textbook feel, the lack of current scholarship on Sitting Bull is apparent as one reads through the chapters.

I would not recommend this book to any age group. The perpetuation of colonial attitudes is prevalent in Marrin's book. As well, the lack of Native voice is apparent. Marrin often negates Lakota spirituality and projects the romantic, utopic Indian with phrases like "Oh no! He was none other than the buffalo god!" The heavy (and skewed) emphasis on war and killing in the middle chapters begs for historical qualification- and makes for barbarism for children who have little frame of reference.

This book suceeds in keeping American Indian people in the colonial time warp and does little to portray Sitting Bull in an humanistic fashion.

4 out of 5 stars Almost fabulous.......2001-07-31

A complete, well-researched, well-rounded but dry portrayal of this historic figure and time period. Marrin succeeds in conveying that a Lakota's way of viewing the world and his place in it differed from the white man's, and thus our own. Sitting Bull is portrayed as a great leader and warrior from the viewpoint of his people, but we are led to see how his actions were understood and portrayed differently by contemporary journalists and historians. Not as moving as Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, but evokes the same sense of remorseful wonder at the needless pain, suffering and loss of life imposed on Native Americans by the United States' "Manifest Destiny" policy and those who carried it out.

5 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming Biography.......2000-11-04

I thought that this book was a very good book. You could read this book and never put it down. This was a great book for an assignment or just for fun. They tell a lot about his biggest battle " The Little-Bighorn". If you like really good books you should read this.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough.......2000-09-27

This is a fine history book for Young Adults, in the tradition of Russell Freedman's prizewinning photobiographies. Carefully researched and footnoted, the book also includes a list of further readings and an index. The body of the book is clearly written and substantial - indeed, adults interested in the subject would also do well with this one. It contains many direct quotes from primary sources, along with many fascinating photographs of the people involved, and hand-drawn illustrations by Sioux people who witnessed these events. The facts are presented in a straightforward manner, and while there is natural sympathy towards the unjustly dispossessed tribes herein, overall the book is remarkably balanced. Depth is given to people such as Custer and Major James Walsh. I like the way readers may draw their own conclusions rather than having them forced. There are few clear heroes or villains here, rather there is historical truth and tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth, thought-provoking, excellent biography.......2000-05-06

This is the most balanced and in depth book I have ever read about Sitting Bull, and, in fact, about his people. I read a lot of children's books, and I feel this one deserves an award for the well-balanced look at both the Native American and the expanding USA nation view of the place of the American Indians in the new culture. Incredibly well researched and well written, fascinating throughout.

2 out of 5 stars Good points, but not my culture.......2007-05-15

I borrowed this book from a friend, because it seemed, at a glance, that it might give some insight about how to find a constructive path through a conflictual situation, without rejecting that conflict.

I think the book delivers on this some. Indeed, some of the points in the final chapters were quite enticing to me.

Unfortuantely, the author and I have profoundly different personal cultures (for lack of a better word). In this book, Mr. Mindell sees the world mainly through power/oppression relationships and group distinctions (e.g. race, gender, sexual orientation, etc), and while I don't dispute that those exist, I don't see them as centrally as the author does. As a result, many of the ways he describes situations focus almost exclusively on (say) how members of one race group felt oppressed by those of another, or one gender by another or the like. I suspect that if you do see the world this way, you'll find this book has many good things to say to you. Since I don't, it didn't.

Aside from this, perhaps the biggest problem I, personally, found with this book is that it tends to tell me THAT things happened in various workshops rather than SHOWING me it happen, so there seemed little I could learn. In part, this may be an inevitable byproduct of the written medium, for I believe part of the author's fundamental approach is to react to the emotion of the moment. Without at least a video recording of an event, you're not going to be able to sense that moment, and what ends up on the written page is "dead" by comparision.

I did like the reminders that helping a group find they have shared interests, or moving people away from thinking towards feeling can be helpful. I also liked the notion of the various role playing activities that were mentioned in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Powerful.......2003-07-02

We read this book as part of our readings in the LIOS program. The book grabbed by and kept me engaged all through it.
It is an earlier work, but I feel it is probably one of the most engaging books on group transformation that I have ever read. I'll be reading more of his work.

5 out of 5 stars Peacemakers, you need this guidebook on group process........1998-12-18

Is your group breaking apart from internal conflict? You need to sit in the fire. Don't let them get away with playing the innocent victim of the wicked other side. Make them keep talking until they learn from each other. Power politics will just add to the spiral of violence, throw gas on the fire. But your sitting in the fire can facilitate bringing the community together.

The author says "... we want to insist on peaceful behavior: line up here, single file. ....." "But the world is not composed of docile little groups" "... engaging in heated conflict instead of running away from it is one of the best ways to resolve the divisiveness that prevails on every level of society - in personal relationships, business and the world."

Are you concerned about global trends? Do you want people to learn to share this earth? You need this book to guide you. Jump in and lead a deep democratic process. Be a midwife at the birth of our sustainable global community.

"Severe conflict can threaten to separate or be facilitated to bring a community together." "If violence is admitted and addressed, it is less destructive than if it is repressed. Going consciously into battle is an intense experience, but one that revitalizes everyone. You are renewed in hope. You find not only solutions to issues, but something more precious. You find that a battle does not mean the end of the world, but the beginning of the river called community."

This tape is quite lovely to listen to and really helps to put you into a relaxed state for yoga. However I didn't realize it was audio not video! Although a nice, small book with sketches of the poses accompanies the tape, I found that for me this was not really useful; I am disabled and find a video tape more helpful. I do use it in conjunction with other tapes which are video.

4 out of 5 stars The Sitting Mountain Series.......2007-01-11

I found this CD easy to use and very practical containing a booklet with illustrations and clear instructions on moving in and out of the poses. Lakshmi includes the physiological benefits of each of the postures included in her series.

4 out of 5 stars Chair Yoga is Great!.......2001-06-20

Chair Yoga is a wonderful alternative to regular floor exercise yoga when you have been sitting at your desk too long or on a confining airline flight. It gets you moving, stretches you and gets the circulation going again. It's also great when you just don't think you have the energy for a full blown yoga session or you've temporarily injured yourself in some way that traditional yoga might be too much of a strain. I can see where it would be fabulous for wheelchair-bound, disabled or frailer seniors. Try it - you'll like it - no love it!

I would love to see Lakshmis'chair yoga placed into the curriculum of all nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and hospitals.Lakshmis'nurturing voice, encouraging words, and strengthening postures are a gift towards healing. It would have been a wonderful healing tool for my father who had become wheelchair bound in his last years.

5 out of 5 stars Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga: Sitting Mountain Series.......2000-07-09

This presentation of do-able yoga is presented as two items: a cassette and a tutorial book the size of the accompanying cassette. It's handy size makes it portable and useful anywhere. The two blend beautifully with the book itself wonderfully helpful. The drawings are excellent. The audio instructions very, very clear. The quality is outstanding and a must for ANYONE interested in the many benefits of yoga without having to be on the floor. It is also for those who sit at a desk for long periods of time, for those perhaps interested in ways to relieve stress by stretching and breathing during a busy day, for those physically unable to practice a more traditional method. Lakshmi has created a package that is worthy of heightened attention by anyone newly intrigued by yoga or by folks, like myself, who have practiced yoga for a number of years. Thank you for this gift, Lakshmi!
