Spiritual Gardening: Creating Sacred Space Outdoors.......2007-07-19
I have a little garden sanctuary where I like to puddle about, meditate, read, or contemplate. This little spot evolved over the years as I changed and grew. There have been some major renovations as well as some small detail tweaking. Still, I felt that there was something not quite right about my little garden. Something was missing so when I saw the book Spiritual Gardening, I had to pick it up.
Spiritual Gardening is a multi-faceted book that every gardener will find useful. There are ready made layouts for a variety of different feels ranging from traditional gardens to more flexible designs. Not only are these designs explained in a physical form but the author also looks to the symbolic and sacred meaning behind the various elements and how they combine into one coherent picture. This connects the reader naturally to other sections of the book that look specifically at symbolism of color, space, and texture.
Throughout the book there are also colorful pictures of various garden designs, elements, and plants. Looking at these photographs really starts to spark the imagination and bring that personal sacred space to life. I can't wait for spring. I can clearly see my little sanctuary now and am eager to make a few modifications.
Just what I was looking for..........2007-01-04
Having just moved to home with very neglected gardens, I wanted a different approach. This lovely book was perfect.
Did anyone even look at the galley proofs?!?.......2004-05-24
It must be said that this is a beautiful book! Photographs, paper, color, layout -- and the text could/would have been, too. But starting on pages 46/47, the text is totally dismembered -- big chunks missing [go from one page to the next mid-sentence and find an entirely different sentence being continued], and big chunks repeated. It made no sense to stumble through the next handful of pages, or try to read beyond: love the photos, but can't keep the book.
None of the other reviewers here mention finding this mess. Are there different printings out there?
Enhanced with lush and beautiful photography.......2004-05-03
Enhanced with the lush and beautiful photography of John Glover, Spiritual Gardening: Creating Sacred Space Outdoors by Peg Streep is a compendium of horticultural inspirations and contemplative wisdoms with respect to creating a garden that would function as a personal spiritual sanctuary from the cares, concerns, stresses and problems of our daily lives. Not merely a nice thing to look at, an effective spiritual garden would engage all of the senses and connect our minds and hearts to an inner balance of tranquility, aroma, and healing. Drawing upon ancient traditions (including those of Zen Buddhism and Native Americans), Spiritual Gardening will enable anyone to design a very special sanctuary combining earth, wind, light, water, and living plants.
At Your Own Risk.......2001-06-07
Read SPIRITUAL GARDENING by Peg Streep at your own risk. After seeing an excerpt in Oprah's magazine, I purchased and read this exceptional book. It truly changed my life. I will never be the same. It took me outside, introduced me to the place of gardens in history, the value of gardens, the many kinds of gardens, and the love and care of gardens. It inspired me to read magazines on gardening, buy hundreds of dollars worth of gardening books--which I cherish, "delve" into the philosophy of feng shui, evaluate my backyard, enhance my backyard into a garden creation--perennials, benches, statues, chimes, birdfeeders, a gazing ball, and enjoyable dreams of more beauty to come therein. It's a passionate and fun obsesssion! SPIRITUAL GARDENING is my favorite gift to give to those I care about. The book is beautiful. It is full of color photographs of varied gardens. The writing is inspirational and full of memorable garden quotations. It's one of my most valued possessions!

Customer Reviews:
enjoyable, easy to follow.......2007-03-09
This is a nice straightforward book. Good for the begginner. Does not contain any spells or try to explain a great deal about magic, but does have a good dictionary of magical plants at the back. Focuses more on the gardening aspect but gives advice about different types of magical garden design. I enjoyed reading it but it is more of a starting and reference point than a bible.
A highly readible and easy-to-use account.......2004-11-08
The Charmed Garden: Sacred and Enchanting Plants for the Magically Inclined Herbalist is a straightforward, alphabetical listing of various common plants and their occult or magical applications. An introduction to cultivating a garden of a specific symbolic theme heralds the entries of individual plants; each entry covers the basic theme of the plant, its description, habitat, tips and warning (both magical and of a practical gardening nature), and magical uses. The Charmed Garden is primarily a resource concerning magical properties, more than a gardening refernce, and is meant as a supplementary resource specifically for experienced gardeners. A highly readible and easy-to-use account.

Insightful and inspiring.......1999-09-01
Thanks to Robert Hamma and his book Landscapes of the Soul, which has helped me to look at the places in my life in a new way. In this book, the author suggests that there is no ordinary place, for the presence of the divine is everywhere, all we have to do is be attentive. Hamma encourages readers to listen, to smell, to taste, to touch, and to see, so that we might better develop a sense of place. Throughout the book the author shares some of his own experiences and explains how different places have had meaning in his life. But he also looks at cultural and religious traditions to see how place has had meaning throughout history. One great feature of this book is the exercises at the end of each chapter, which allow the reader time to reflect more personally on places in his or her life and what impact they have had. This book truly is full of insight and inspiration!

There's also a DVD included !!.......2006-03-10
Very intriguing quest for the lost empire of Shang Shung, sacred land of Dzog-Chen according to the Bon religion of Tibet, accompanied by heart-fulfilling pictures and a beautiful commentary. There's also a DVD sleeved in the back flap of the book that puts in motion picture the whole book thru the gracious words of the commentators and the Bon lamas. The DVD alone is worth half the price of the package and the hard cover together with the waxed paper of the book make the purchase an absolute must for all people interested in Bon culture, religion and Dzog Chen of ancient Tibet.

Fantastically Gorgeous Gift for Sedona Lovers!.......2007-08-30
I love this book. My parents are long time Sedona residents, and every time I visit them I purchase a few of Lindahl's "Secret Sedona's" to take home as gifts from vacation. The photography is phenomenal, as well as the written word, which decribes Sedona in the romantic fashion it is in reality.
An easy read, with pictures worth a thousand words and beautifully laid out, I recommend this book to anyone, whether you live in Sedona, visited Sedona, or have even never been there! (It will make to want to do all of the above.) 5 Stars!!!!!
Precision and Beauty in Secret Sedona.......2007-07-25
Secret Sedona illumines, with precision and beauty, Sedona's swirled red rock country and its ethereal waters.
Larry Lindahl's photos have such depth that it's worth taking them into the sunshine, to see into the purple shadows.
The layers of his text include Lindahl's journal, cultural and natural history, plus a thorough index.
But the book isn't a travel guide. Lindahl's text invites the reader to settle in for a slow read, with supple images, riding the edge of the known and unknown in Sedona.
Here is a lasting cache of awe to enjoy, alongside, or far away from, time in Sedona.
-Jane Yett
Beautiful.......2007-04-05
This is an unbelievable beautiful book and for the price, unbelievable quality. Wonderful book to daydream about Sedona
Secret Success.......2006-11-03
Larry Lindahl's combinations of awsome photography and colorful narative descriptions, reveals not only the spirit and personality of this incredible landscape, but of his own as well. It gives you a glimps into the soul of this artist and his incredible drive to explore, uncover and connect with the land. With great respect and a keen eye, he takes you visually into hidden places most people would never make an effort to see themselves, and shares
his observations and extensive knowledge of each secret place he encounters. A great addition to anyone's library or a great reason to start one.
A Sacred Conversation.......2006-08-17
Can't say how much I have enjoyed Secret Sedona. Lindahl has found such a unique & original voice for his lyrical descriptions of Sedona's magical mystique, its myriad flora and fauna, and its ancient spirits. Equal parts science (weather, geography, geology, biology, botany) and art (his intimate, running conversation with the land, its animals & plants & spirits), this book is simply a joy to read over and over!!
As a fellow Sedonan and landscape photographer, I greatly appreciate Lindahl's stunning portfolio of images. I personally know how hard he's worked to get to these breathtakingly beautiful locations and his work constantly inspires me.
For anyone seeking a deep & meaningful look into the mysteries of Red Rock Country, this is the perfect place to start.

Excellent.......2002-06-29
Mr. Pennick is thorough, detailed and pragmatic. I am thoroughly impressed with this book. In a field where new age mumbo-jumbo can overwhelm practical study, this shines. He has written careful, well researched accounts that clarify the celtic use of the landscape, without falling into anecdote, he gives useful examples, and writes clearly. I will buy more of his books.
10 / 10
Celtic Sacred Landscapes.......2000-04-12
This is a beautifully presented book replete with the author's own illustrations of crosses, knotwork, labyrinths etc. For anyone with an interest in Earth Mysteries or Celtic belief systems this is an essential and informative read. Pennick's style is comfortable, easily accessible yet never too simplistic. One gets the feeling that he truly knows his subject and indeed he should for he has being studying the European Sacred Traditions for nearly thirty years and has written many other books on these subjects such as the Celtic Oracle and Celtic Art in the Northern Tradition. Each chapter is laid out in easy to read sections dealing with a comprehensive range of topics including the symbolic landscape and the Celtic World Tree, sacred groves, the healing powers of wells, springs and stones, caves and the underworld, cities, earthworks, holy mountains and islands, trackways and spiritpaths. Scholarly insight melds with folklore and spirituality yet never descends into over-sentimentalism as so many of these books can do. Pennick awakes in the reader a gentle sense of wonder and a yearning for a return to the times when the earth was embraced as the living being she is, where each tree and stone, each river and spring, bore a name and blessings to bestow, where spirits abounded and the bards sang with pure voices now sadly silenced. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Santa Fe photographer Joan Alessi provides a polychromatic exposition of New Mexico's traditional roadside memorials, descansos, as an art form. Her stunning photography captures the artistic attributes of these decorative crosses while preserving their religious and cultural integrity.
Sylvia Grider's accompanying essay explains the origin and folkloric tradition of roadside memorials. These religious markers are not in themselves unique to the southwestern United States. Rather, they are a universal phenomenon with a long and curious history. The term descanso (literally translated as "resting place"), however, may have indeed originated among the Spanish-speaking vecinos of New Mexico.
"The descansos contained in this book are a reflection of both the emotion and dedication of the devotees as they mourn the passing and celebrate the life of the beloved."--Art Gómez, National Park Service, supervisory historian; (coauthor) New Mexico: Images of a Land and Its People (UNM Press)

Book Description
Archaeology of Natural Places is the first book to examine the special importance that unaltered features of the landscape held for prehistoric peoples. This volume explores why natural places such as caves, mountains, springs and rivers assumed a sacred character in European prehistory, and how the evidence for this can be analyzed in the field. Extending the range of landscape studies, this book makes the results of modern research accessible to a wider audience, including students and academics, field archaeologists, and those working in heritage management.
