It was slow but was recieved on time. Book binding came loose but book still great.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price and the time for new NX users..........2007-05-25

I bought Nikon Capture NX as soon as it was available, intrigued by descriptions and magazine reviews, and hoping to speed and enhance my RAW workflow. Unfortunately, the accelerating press of work, the need to get post processing done on a never-ending stream of images caused me to put off making the switch from the old Nikon Capture 4.x.x lest my fumbling and incompetence with new software slow or affect the quality of my work.

Up front I'll say that his explanation of control points (U-Point Technology, as NIK puts it) was worth the price of admission. So yes, I'm fully satisfied that I've had my money's worth out of this book. Also, I'll say that his elementary explanations of curves, levels, and histograms was worthwhile; most users of imaging software already know the information on some level, but his blunt, unadorned explanations was refreshing, and I took something of value away from reading his perceptions on these subjects.

However, unlike some other reviewers, I didn't find the book to be particularly well written, assembled, or edited. It had a rush-to-market feel to it throughout. There are references to "sidebars" that are not really sidebars; some may have been referred to but left out. At least I was unable to find a couple of them, flipping back and forth through the pages repeatedly and in vain. Also, I get tired of imaging software books written by and primarily for dedicated Mac users. PLEASE...don't get me wrong; I think Macs are wonderful. I have previously owned several. But despite the fact that artistic types and imaging professionals comprise a larger percentage of Mac users than the market as a whole it's a Windows world, like it or not. I would prefer to see Windows screen shots used and Windows keystrokes emphasized. It's niggling, but there it is.

Bottom line: If you have or intend to purchase Nikon Capture NX but haven't used it yet, buy the book and spend an evening with it. If you've already adopted the software and made it a part of your daily or weekly workflow, you probably won't find the same value.

5 out of 5 stars Capture NX - Real World.......2007-05-12

The book is well written, easy to understand following the authors instructions.
One minus point: the book is poorly bound, after using it for one week it started to come apart.

5 out of 5 stars Real World guide for a Really Great Program!!.......2007-04-11

I'm not sure what the other 2 reviewers were expecting from this book but I found it to be a great guide for my workflow.

Mr. Long cuts through the clutter and gets to the brass tacks on how to use this program quickly and easily.

Sure, as the other reviewer alluded to, he doesn't go as deep as the manual-but using this book in conjunction with the manual is a 1-2 punch. Anytime I want to learn more on any of the subjects he covers, I go to my manual. This isn't a replacement for the manual--it is a supplement to the manual.

Learning the ideal use of Control Points (worth buying Capture NX alone for this feature!) and getting a real persepective on the software makes all the difference for me.

The section on selection brushes cleared up a lot of confusion for me and opened up a whole new world for my photography.

Thanks to Capture NX and this book I'm spending far less time in Photoshop and other programs and getting a finished, deliverable picture while keeping an archive of all of the steps along the way.

[...]I can't wait to see Vincent Versace's new DVD set coming out as well.

Buy this book, you won't regret it.

Michael

3 out of 5 stars Not much more than a user manual.......2007-04-10

My first impression was received when I picked up the Amazon.com box and felt how light it was. This CAN'T be it. I'm used to the REAL WORLD series containing very thick and detailed books. I was surprised by the 220 page book, and felt that $35 was probably a little steep, but looked on the bright side - a 220p book is a heck of a lot easier to tote around than a 400p bible. I put my impressions aside and dug in.

Ben divides the book into 8 chapters: 1) Intro; 2) Basic Theory; 3) Interface & Basic Workflow; 4) Preparing to Edit; 5) Basic Image Editing; 6) Advanced Image Editing; 7) Version Control and Batch Processing; 8) Output.

Basic Theory is a quick intro to terms like Raw, jpeg, white balance, non-destructive editing, and it walks the beginner through reading a histogram. The Interface & Basic Workflow chapter introduces users to the NX toolbars and defines the steps in a basic workflow as: Importing, culling, adding metadata, sorting, editing for "picks", outputting and archiving. Ben gives a brief description of each, such as "you can import your images directly from your camera using a cable connection to your computer. Nothing new here, and it has very little to do with Capture NX. However, this could serve as an informative overview for someone just beginning digital photography.

Chapter 4, preparing to edit, is a basic (very basic) overview of color management. This is, again, geared toward the beginner, and not very specific to Capture NX. It doesn't go deep, but this is a book about NX, not Color Management. So, about 75 pages into the manual we finally get into Chapter 5 and editing with NX.

In Chapter 5, Ben walks us through his recommended sequence of edits: Geometric corrections, remove color casts, adjust tone & contrast, perform color correction, final tweaks, sharpen for output. He introduces us to the tools used to make the edits and does a good job of clarifying the difference between Base Adjustments and Edit Steps and why (whenever possible) Edit Steps should be used instead of Base Adjustments. Rotating, straightening, cropping, flipping and resizing are covered, as are auto levels, auto color, and levels and curves. While most of this book is geared toward the beginner, I didn't feel that there was enough of an explanation within the levels and curves section to give a solid understanding to the beginner. If you are looking to learn NX levels and curves, you are probably better consulting a Photoshop book like REAL WORLD PHOTOSHOP CS2 and taking that understanding to the NX curves tool.

In all, I was pretty disappointed by the depth of the material. This book spends too much time teaching you how to do basic things like rotate and crop (if you can't figure out how to do this yourself, you are in trouble) and doesn't spend enough time discussing techniques like how to sharpen in NX. In fact, Ben glosses over image sharpening in about two pages by giving a brief definition of Intensity, radius, and threshold, but not mentioning how he uses these three settings to create sharper images for the web or print output.

In Advanced Editing, Ben walks through creating masks for image edits, and through color control points. Finally, the Batch Processing and Output chapters look at these features within Capture NX. Note: I've found batch processing to be very slow, but the book offers no hints on how to speed it up.

In all, I was disappointed with the content. There aren't many books available on Capture NX and it would have been great to have a comprehensive bible around this tool. Unfortunately, this book is more like an expanded version of the Nikon (Nik) manual and offers little new material to someone who has played with Capture NX and knows a little about photo editing.

Other notably missing topics are: Optimizing your PC to use NX, troubleshooting NX, any tips & tricks, creating templates or sets. Overall, for a very good software product, this is a disappointing guide.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent academic introduction to aerial photography.......2004-08-25

This book is an outstanding, in-depth introduction to the science of aerial photography. At the outset, it must be said that this book does not tell you how to bring in, register, or project your aerial photo in a particular GIS application. What it does tell you is how that photo came about and how it might be interpreted or used. The text reads well, but does require the reader's full attention to absorb all the information.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, could be better.......2007-03-09

I give this book 3 stars, but that doesn't mean it's not worth buying. The author provides a straightforward process workflow for setting up your digital camera, exposing and capturing your shots, uploading and post processing your digital files, and preparing them for output to an album.

The problem with this book, however, is that it follows the guidelines of most Amerhest books. It's only 150 pages, and in many places the author could have added more information. I want to read more about how he sets up his filing system in Adobe Bridge (which is the file organizer he explains how to use.) I also wanted to know why he uses Bridge over say iView Media Pro? And it's interesting that he doesn't mention two of the big digital imaging applications on the market today: Adobe Lightroom and Apple's Aperature, both which handle RAW images faster and more efficiently than Adobe Bridge. If Bridge is all you have, then this might be a useful book.

The best chapters in this book are about setting up Photoshop actions for processing wedding photos. He explains about a dozen actions that should be a part of every wedding photographer's arsenal. He also explains how to use Adobe Camera Raw, mainly because he correctly encourages his readers that it's better to shoot in RAW mode than in JPEG.

I think Lee would have been better writing a three-part series about digital capture and workflow, simply because the process is so very important to how a photographer makes his or her money. If she lacks a good, solid workflow, she can start out making a $100-200/hour but end up making a lot less in the post-production process.

So yes, this book is worth reading if you're looking for answers to build your workflow, but it will leave you wanting to know more.

Book Description

The major function of photography is to capture a picture from what is in front of you. Whether a picture of the family pet or advertising spread, the acquisition of the scene is the first step in the digital image process. Digital Photographic Capture takes that first step and it breaks it down in detail so you can understand and better manipulate the mechanics of the process.

As we transition from the silver halide base of photography to an electronic enabled future, we can step to the side and look at the intersection of these processes. Today it is not that one is superior in all situations, but that in the imaging world hybrid imaging maintains uses in unique applications and has certain advantages.

Digital Photographic Capture explores construction and functions of the various parts and processes used to capture images. Sensors, lenses, creation, storage, and hybrid imaging are all broken down into basic explanations, enabling the photographer to have a basic understanding of the photography today. This is your new introduction to photography.

* Discusses capture for cameras, scanners, and non traditional imaging devices.
* Learn how the design and functions of sensors effect the way light is captured.
* Explore lens dynamics needed for digital cameras and how optics create the "telephoto" effect with digital cameras.

5 out of 5 stars Digital Mysteries Revealed.......2005-05-25

Once you begin reading Glenn Rand's fascinating, attractive book, you start to realize how much you didn't know about digital imaging and what's going on inside the digital camera you just bought. It's not an essential read for using your camera, but it's essential if you insist on understanding what is becoming one of the most valuable and most important technical advances of the last century and this one. In my own writing, I found myself turning again and again to Digital Photographic Capture for authoritative inforamtion on the technical esoterica of photography.

5 out of 5 stars Digital Photographic Capture.......2005-05-08

Dr's Rand, Litschel, and Davis have written an outstanding, definitive text which should be mandatory reading for everyone making the switch to digital. The authors successfully guide the reader through ten chapters discussing the technicalities of digital image sensors, lens basics, image output, exposure basics, and file formats just to mention a few. There is enough detail here to satisfy even the most keen minded.
The authors start each chapter with a brief overview of the chapters contents and define key photographic terms in the side margins as the chapter unfolds. Additonally, the text is illustrated with detailed visual color schematics reinforcing the points made by the authors in each chapter. Finally, the authors wrap up each chapter with a brief summation and include an extensive list of chapter terms. There is also some great photography in each chapter also!
The authors are to be commended for guiding the reader to a technical understanding and focusing on information that is fundamental to digital imaging both past, present and future.
This book should be in the library of anyone curious about what goes on under the hood of their digital camera. Yes, it is technical but not so technical that a beginner could not understand it. A must read! Highly Recommended!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it!.......2001-08-06

What an excellent guide to photagraphy, with excellent pictures as well. As I started to look at this book I saw talent on first hand. The way each picture supported a different figure of photography. I hope to see more books like this one and 'Capturing the Night With Your Camera' soon.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Informative.......2000-07-26

This book addresses a realistic approach to the current world of photography. It's not just digital cameras and computers: it's film, illumination and composition. Carucci feels that certain ideas are necessary to produce a good image regardless of the technology. The book is well written, though it seems that some of the passages, especially at the chapter beginnings, are a bit too creative. The book doesn't read like a textbook. Instead it's friendly, especially to the newbie. His introduction is poignant and the images are incredible. The kid turned into a statue is both shocking and wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for contemporary phohotography.......1999-10-26

The author of this contemporaray photo manual is not caught up in the technology, rather he uses a common sense approach to new technology. The book starts off with the thought process and preaches conventional rules of pictorial composition, instead of the technical jargon that so many books of this type contain. One has to go no further than the book's introduction to realize that Carucci bridges the gap between art and technique. As for the images, I forgot for a moment that this was an instructional manual. The artwork is first rate. That's not to say that the writing is less than clear and informative. I especially liked the child/statue composite. I recommend this book to anyone interested in digital photography.

4 out of 5 stars Very Cool........1999-06-14

This one is better than most of the books in its category, although by far is not one of those "most complete guides". Good writing style, Real life examples. Type of camera, film and exposure settings are listed next most of the example pictures. What this book has that others don't, is a pretty good overview of digital input and output(especially printers and scanners), and how it's related to "film" photography. Highly recommended for beginners.

I couldn't agree with the previous review writer more. This is an outstanding book. If, however, you're just starting out in digital photography and want to learn the basics, this book may offer more detail than you want. If you're a bit farther along and want to know some things like how sensors work or why lenses made for digital photography differ from lenses made for film cameras, this is your book. The author goes into quite a bit of technical detail in a way that is never overwhelming and usually a lot of fun.
The book is also printed well and the numerous illustrations are excellent.

Understanding Digital Cameras: Getting the Best Image from Capture to Output, by Jon Tarrant. Focal Press, Elsevier: Amsterdam, Boston, London, etc. Paperback, 346 Pages, 2007, [...]
Reviewed by David J. Marcou for Publication on amazon.com --

Two very worthy elements reside side-by-side in this excellent follow-up to the 2003 predecessor book by this gifted author, `Digital Camera Techniques' - i.e., excellent technical insights into every aspect of digital camera work, and human touches of kindness and interest.
Jon Tarrant has put in his time over the years experimenting with and analyzing cameras, prints, and related photographic equipment and supplies, especially with regard to the human life around us. And though he always writes with a fresh eye for that life, he has paid his dues. He has edited three international photo magazines, including the `British Journal of Photography,' and he still writes technical studies for that magazine. He has also contributed both writing and photos to many other magazines, newspapers, and books. In addition, he is very good about employing others in his books, like other photographers (including Paul Stewart, Michael Ruskin, and Andrew Stevens), who have joined him with model images that teach in basic and advanced ways, how to operate and utilize digital cameras and images.
One lesson of particular merit is the notion that a flash warning light should not always be heeded. Too many times, people use flash to spoil images, by wiping out visual details in the foreground, like shadows and silhouettes that would be gorgeous without flash. On the other hand, Jon also points out how fill-in flash can be advantageous, as when one is shooting a family portrait with family members standing backs to the sun. Other key lessons include keeping your subject in focus despite, or while showing, movement or complex fields of view. Fine-art printing is also covered, as is color quality, plus working with models, among many related subjects here. Jon also points out that a photo should generally be in-focus when made, but that the Normal setting not the Fine/Sharp setting should be utilized in-camera, with exceptions to be sure, so the image can be sharpened further, on-computer.
In `Understanding Digital Cameras', one feels that Jon Tarrant fully understands each camera's and subject's basics and nuances, and imparts his carefully obtained wisdom to the reading public - a public he continues to capably educate in the most advanced forms of modern photography.

There are essentially two parts to this book--one in which the author explains how a digital camera works (the information can be found just as clearly on the Web), and one where various photographers demonstrated how they took pictures that they felt were good examples of digital camera work. I can't find a use for the book or any of its information.
