Book Description
The project that captured a nation's imagination.
The instructions were simple, but the results were extraordinary.
"You are invited to anonymously contribute a secret to a group art project. Your secret can be a regret, fear, betrayal, desire, confession, or childhood humiliation. Reveal anything -- as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before. Be brief. Be legible. Be creative."
It all began with an idea Frank Warren had for a community art project. He began handing out postcards to strangers and leaving them in public places -- asking people to write down a secret they had never told anyone and mail it to him, anonymously.
The response was overwhelming. The secrets were both provocative and profound, and the cards themselves were works of art -- carefully and creatively constructed by hand. Addictively compelling, the cards reveal our deepest fears, desires, regrets, and obsessions. Frank calls them "graphic haiku," beautiful, elegant, and small in structure but powerfully emotional.
As Frank began posting the cards on his website, PostSecret took on a life of its own, becoming much more than a simple art project. It has grown into a global phenomenon, exposing our individual aspirations, fantasies, and frailties -- our common humanity.
Every day dozens of postcards still make their way to Frank, with postmarks from around the world, touching on every aspect of human experience. This extraordinary collection brings together the most powerful, personal, and beautifully intimate secrets Frank Warren has received -- and brilliantly illuminates that human emotions can be unique and universal at the same time.

Totally engrossing.......2007-09-26
I bought this as a gift for my twenty-something brother. I started to glance through it a little before wrapping it, and ended up sitting with my nose in it for an hour. Really cool coffee-table book.

Secrets shared are a wonderful thing........2007-09-05
Big time fan fot he website and love this collection of books. The honesty makes me laugh, cry and feel totally connected to others. A birlliant project.
Amazing.......2007-08-24
This book absolutely amazing and unique. Sure there are 3 books so far from him, all with the same postcard concept, but each book is direct and revealing. I found myself looking into my life and relationships and thinking that the post cards are saying and showing exactly what I felt/remember feeling. The pages are beautiful and colorful along with the words and writing that somehow display exactly what the writer was feeling. Even if you only read a few pages every once in a while, it will ground and humble you, pick you up, and make you want to be a better person. Truly amazing.
Amazing book, amazing video trailer to go along with it.......2007-08-16
I have been a fan of the Postsecret phenomenon since the first book came out. They are moving, and make one feel that you are not alone. Everyone has baggage. quirks. Human beings have alot going on. You must see the Book Trailer just posted on Youtube, it is inspirational, a work of art and makes you want to buy the books! Go to Youtube and search for Postsecret, and watch!! Its extraordinary!

This is a fantastic book as are his others great insight to the human mind, plus makes you laugh cry and think.
Filled with insights.......2007-09-05
As a fan of the cult show this is the book to read lots of theories about the symbolism and meaning of the show. A great read pack with insights.
Interesting look into other's minds........2007-08-09
I think this project is amazing. After reading all of the books and getting the updates every Sunday from the website, I have come to realize that everyone has their own bag of crap to carry. It's a very interesting look into the minds of people and the secrets they carry around with them. Some funny, some sad. If you would like a book that is read in one sitting (everyone I have let see it has to look through the whole thing), this is the book for you.
Great!.......2007-07-15
It's the reading equivalent to searching through someone's medicine cabinet. It'll make you cry and make you giggle. Ultimately, it will make you contemplate your own secrets!
People Have Secrets Both Dark and Light.......2007-07-07
And secrets have power. It is a courageous and amazing thing to write down a secret and post it on a website. Some secrets are sweet, some are deep, and some are heartbreaking. But with each secret I read, I know that my secrets are not crazy. I'm just a normal person, like everyone else.
Amazon.com
At the beginning of 2005, Frank Warren launched a new blog called PostSecret as an experiment in community art, inviting strangers to mail him anonymous postcards that made art out of their innermost secrets and then posting a selection of the cards every week on his blog. Within a year, his blog was one of the five most popular in the world, and his first book, PostSecret, was one of the surprise bestsellers of 2005. My Secret is his second book, a collection of cards from teens and college students--none of which has been shown on the website--that carries the same emotional power and creativity that have made Warren's project a phenomenon.
We are featuring seven postcards from the book here: see two of them on this page, and click on the numbers below to see five more.

My Secret.......2007-09-21
This book is classic, just like all of the other PostSecret Books. A must have for the PostSecret collector. You are not alone.
It is nice to know others have secrets!.......2007-09-14
What a really cool way to express yourself! I know for a fact that letting go of a secret makes life a little easier sometimes...and to have the opportunity to see what others have let go of is pretty neat. I wish it were longer!
Inspiration.......2007-08-23
This is an fascinating book filled with people's deepest secrets. It's beautiful to be able to open it, and feel as if hundreds of people have poured their hearts and creativity onto the pages. It's a thrill when you come across a secret and applies to you as well, makes you realize you aren't alone. Visually appealing, along with being the best kind of memoir, this book is a must have along with the other post secret books.
Love it; wish i could share it.......2007-07-18
I've done it a million times, but I still love flipping through this book and reading the secrets. I only wish that it was all "school appropriate" so I could share it with my students. Power points will have to suffice until they come out with a PG edition. Sadly unlikely...
Awesome Idea...tons of fun to read!.......2007-07-17
I love post secret and the person i gave the gift to also loves post secret! Its a great gift idea and tons of fun for everyone!

Book Description
Daring and provocative, these images of the female nude push the viewer's limits and enters 'forbidden territory'. Argentini plays with our notions of privacy and constructs a deeply erotic universe where it is hard to know what we will find--our hidden sexual fantasies or a parallel reality? These charged images are both sophisticated and raw, with a dark and extemely refined glamour all their own.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-08-24
For starters: this book is a monster. I had the package dropped off in the mail room and wondered, "what the hell did I order?" The box was massive and weighed a ton... I thought I may have ordered a slab of bricks and forgot.
Once inside I opened the package. I quickly realized this was a well printed book. From the padded felt cover colored in red, to the nice paper that gripped your fingers. That, alone, made up for the cost.
Ibegan going through page by page. The color was all vivid. The women were beautiful and the poses were elegantlly seductive. I turned each page to find something new and exciting.
After about 50 or so pages, I began to get restless. It was almost TOO much book to be consumed all at once. I went through 10 more pages and decided to put it down. My mind couldn't properly digest everything it was taking in and I needed a break. 2 or 3 hours later I sat down to view more. This time viewed 20 pages before I had to close the book. The photography was great and the concepts are executed with precision. As a budding photographerI was overwhelmed with his skill. It was too much for me.
I have gone back to the book several times. I have probably viewed each image 2 or 3 times by now. There are some images that still resonate in my mind. It's definitely a book I would suggest to others.
I show many of my models, makeup artists, and wardrobe stylists. They react with different opinions. Some see it as trash. Others see it as art. Annd ohers are indifferent.
disappointing.......2007-07-12
the pictures are...frankly mediocre. I would suggest another one named Erotique--it's ligher, less expensive, and has better pictures.
I do NOT recommend this book.......2007-06-15
The women in this book are, for the most part, lifeless mannequins. In general, I didn't find the women to be photographed in a way that was either erotically attractive, or artistically attractive.
It's good, but could be shorter........2007-05-17
I like this book and the quality is superb, the models are beautiful, and the poses are excellent. However, I thought that the same could have been accomplished in a smaller size and shorter version which would have saved on cost and price. It got a little repetitive as it went on, in my opionion.
I highly recommend this book as one of the best ones out there for nude/erotic photography. It's classy and it really highlights beautiful female form with excellent lighting. What I also enjoyed is that the sets are all environmental and not studio. I hate those studio nudes that look so fake and posed. It was a good learning book for me.
Great with one exception.......2007-05-13
The imagery presented in this book is truly stunning and imaginitive. As a man that truly appreciates both beautiful women and photography, my only criticism is that the body types of the models could have been a little more varied, Otherwise, this a great book.
Book Description
The world's fascination with the Russian imperial family endures, and with this stunning book a new spotlight is added. Jewels of the Tsars, the first book to examine the family's unparalleled collection, is illustrated with extraordinary photographs taken under special conditions at the Kremlin's Diamond Fund, and accompanied by 18th- and 19th-century portraits and photographs of the Tsars, their families, and their court. Prince Michael of Greece, a Romanoff descendant, writes with an insider's knowledge of his family's passion for rare and beautiful jewels, and their place in the troubled history of Imperial Russia.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely Book, not enough!.......2007-07-16
The Romanov ladies, dressed for a court function, dripped precious gemstones from top to toe, each Grand Duchess trying to outdo another in grandeur. Most of that jewelry has been lost, sold, the stones removed. Those who escaped the Revolution were lucky if they managed to take a small collection of their jewels with the, and most had to sell what they brought into exile to support themselves -- after they had written and sold their memoirs, that is. The memoirs of those who saw the Russian court in all its splendour, however, make it clear that the jewelry shown in this book doesn't begin to give one an idea of what the jewelry of the Romanov court ladies was like, though it tries admirably. I, too, would love to see a book on all the jewels of the Romanov ladies -- it might be impossible to find the information now, but the Soviet government apparently does still have some of the pieces left behind.
What is "different" about this book........2007-07-13
The pictures are, of course, beautiful, and show fabulous jewelry. However, what I enjoyed the most was the background information that the author was able to give. Since he is related to most of the royal families of europe, he has unusual access to jewelry, paintings, historical records and inside information. For anyone interested in the time of Imperial Russia, this book does not disappoint. At least one of my friends has also bought this book on my recommendation. I would also suggest this author's book "The Crown Jewels of Europe. If you can find it.
Wow great visual of the jewelry of the romanov's.......2007-05-08
I was really blown away by the pictures of the Jewels, especially the cherry earrings for the new Brides, I had read about these earrings but it is nothing to actually seeing how large the stones really are. Good historical pictures with various pieces. A wonderful index for the historian trying to get a handle on the lifestyle of the upper classes and the royalty of russia before the revolution.
Stunning.......2007-04-13
I highly recommend this book. The photography was perfect and the text was just right.
Excellent.......2007-03-10
Maybe one of the best of its kind, certainly the best in my collection.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2007-06-06
Got this books last christmas, and I was blown away. Have always been interesting in design, fashion and history. This book has it all. Great design on the book (maybe a little hard to handle since it quite big in size), great photos, lots and lots with detail from the garments, and the best, it give you a look in to the past.
Best Illustrated Historical Fashion Volumes Available!.......2007-04-09
This is the most beautifully illustrated book available on the history of fashion. I have looked at many, but none are so thorough and definitive for the 18th to the 20th centuries. The publisher lists the book at $49.99 (unbelievable for what you get!). It has been reprinted several times since I first became aware of it. Each time I have missed my chance to get a copy -- It seems to sell out quite regularly. After almost losing hope, I was finally able to get a copy of this latest edition!
The current edition is a set which consists of two large volumes. The first covers the 18th and 19th centuries, and the second is devoted to the 20th century. These two tomes are in a sturdy outer case. The illustrations are clear and detailed, making it easy to examine the construction used for the garments, and also are displayed so that one can see the overall beauty of the craftsmanship. They are truly works of art! Text is at a minimum; the books consist first and foremost of these beautiful illustrations.
A nearly perfect tome on Fashion history.......2007-03-13
Everything is perfect in these two volumes. Was terribly upest when the first issue (single volume) was discontinued, but this one tops it. Clear photos, specific research and exceptionally well laid out. My students beg to look at it, and THE PRICE! Incredibly inexpensive for a book of this sort.
Makes a great gift- and can substitute for barbells when needed.
What a beautiful book!.......2007-03-02
When visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art I found this book, and let me tell you, what a find! It is quite impressive in size, detail, length, and quality of pictures. The books range from the 18th century to present. The set consists of two magnificent volumes. Whether you love fashion or are simply interested in how people in centuries before us lived and dressed, get this book! By the way- this makes an amazing coffee table book. Not many (female!) friends and relatives can leave my house without taking a look at the set. Would make a great gift as well. Well worth the price.
4 1/2 stars really.......2007-03-01
I bought what I think is a compiled version of these two books from a local bookstore. It is similar length and has the same title. I have long been searching for a good fashion history book and this one is fabulous. Nearly every page is a large photo of a real antique costume. There is a nice balance of close-up detail photos and full photos, as well as undergarments and accessories. You can really watch the progression of fashion through nearly 300 years. I also like the amount of text that is written; just enough to explain the style progression and the political environment of the time. A picture is worth a thousand words and trying to explain a garment in text is pointless when you can just look at the picture. The only thing I wish was different is that the modern section (from about the 70's on)features primarily avant garde experimental clothing, not the stuff we actually see on red carpets and runways.
Book Description
The storied and turbulent career of glamour artist Alberto Vargas took him from Florenz Ziegfeld's Follies in the 1920s to Hollywood in the 30s to Esquire magazine and the emergence of the "Varga Girl" in the 40s and, ultimately, to a lasting home at Playboy in the 60s and 70s.
This is the first book on the works of Vargas in more than a decade. It is also the first to include a generous selection of his vivid original drawings and his finest work for Playboy magazine. Along with these highly sought-after pictures, the book features early unpublished works, unpublished sketches, the celebrated Legacy Nudes, and more.
The decade-by-decade narrative essay and captions are by Reid Stewart Austin, an art director at Playboy for 20 years, and author of the bestselling Vargas biography written in 1978 in collaboration with the artist.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but with a few Caveats.......2007-09-22
This book is beautifully produced, with all of the art reproduced in a large format (sometimes across two-page spreads) in luminous color. I am very pleased with this book, and I feel it is a wonderful introduction to Mr. Vargas' incomparable artistry, and serves as a nice retrospective, chronicling his work from his Ziegfeld Follies glamour illustrations of the 1920s and Hollywood starlet paintings of the 1930s, through his work with Esquire and on into the Playboy work of the 1960s and 1970s.
However, luminous and beautiful as the included images are, prospective buyers should be warned that many of the images reproduced herein are either unfinished preliminaries, rough sketches/paintings, or items that were rejected or unused. This does not detract from Vargas' artistry, but may be disappointing to some lovers of his art. All in all, a superb volume for art lovers or pin-up enthusiasts alike, but one that may require some consideration before purchase.
Just breathtaking..........2007-06-08
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and reading about Alberto Vargas, his work, his relationships with his publisher(s) and his wife. The man was an amazing talent. The size of these illustrations were incredible, sorry to see a seam going down the middle ... If I could I'd take them out and hang them in poster frames!
I wish there were even more drawings to enjoy.
Outstanding artwork.......2007-05-30
The Max Vargas Collection is an excellent collection of his finest commercial works. The illistrations and the commentary offers excellent backgroung on his life and body of work. The only thing I found wanting was the large collection of Vargas art that invariably made it onto the noses of many warbirds in WW2 and Korea. There's little refernece to this.
Vargas at his best.......2007-03-10
Great book. Lots of history about Alberto Vargas and his continued struggle to make it in the art world. Well he did make it and how.
THE LEGEND THAT IS VARGAS.......2007-02-18
There are a few legitimate greats, legends of the pin-up and glamour art world whose names are synonymous with style and perfection. There's Rolf Armstrong, Zoe Mozert, Gil Elvgren, and, perhaps the greatest of them all, Alberto Vargas. Vargas first came to notoriety in 1919 when he was hired by the Ziegfeld Follies to paint portraits of the various Follies Revue stars. He would work for several years producing pinups for Esquire Magazine but it was his work for Playboy Magazine beginning in 1960 that made him a legend. The Vargas page in Playboy would become a regular feature for the next decade and a half.
This book contains an eclectic assortment of Vargas art beginning with the earliest work in 1914 and running up through 1975, over sixty years worth of work. It is indeed fascinating to compare his works from the twenties to those of the sixties and seventies. Despite the changes in fashion, hairstyles, and even facial expressions, Vargas' work always had an innate sensuality to them.
The names of the Follies women aren't remembered by most people today but women like Olive Thomas and Nita Nadli were the starlets of their era. His work in the thirties included paintings of Hollywood stars as well movie posters. His subjects included a young Shirley Temple and the sultry Marlene Dietrich.
Several examples of Vargas' sketches are shown partnered with the finished paintings so one can see the progression and changes made along the way. There are a number of two-page spreads in the book such as "Cordillera De Los Andes" a wonderful nude spread of a sexy blonde lying face down. It is simple, yet remarkable erotic. "Blonde Venus" is yet another fantastic 1950's nude spread.
The first Vargas painting from Playboy included in the book is from December 1960 and shows a buxom nude redhead in a pink negligee twisting almost impossibly over her left shoulder to look at the reader. The thing that strikes me about Vargas' paintings, particularly the Playboy paintings, is the way the girls seem to look at you, and you alone with those big, watery eyes. It's no wonder he became so popular with the Vargas page.
The book is a beautifully produced, over-sized hardcover with some 100 full-color illustrations. Highly recommended for all fans of pin-up or glamour art, or those that just appreciate the female form.

Book Description
At Home with Art is about art lovers, their passion for art, and their seemingly unquenchable desire to bring home the works that have captured their hearts. Whether the artworks are Picassos or posters, these people want to acquire and live with the art they love. "I wake up in the morning and exercise where I can look at it," says John Robson about one of the paintings in his San Francisco townhouse. How these art lovers integrate their finds
into their living spaces, juxtaposing their paintings and sculpture with the artifacts of everyday life -- furniture, rugs, books, lamps, objets d'art -- is vividly illustrated here in more than fifty homes inhabited by people for whom living with art is as essential as breathing.
These homes are not mini-museums with art to be admired from a respectful distance. Nor have they been designed by interior decorators whose goal is to harmonize the upholstery with the pictures. Each home has been chosen for its very personal and inspired expression of art and decor, revealing a deep, even spiritual, relationship between the pictures on the walls and the people who place them there. From airy lofts and old farmhouses to sleek city apartments and cozy traditional houses, all are made special by the paintings and sculptures within.
A wide variety of people appear in these pages, from the president of MoMA to a young man in love with poster art, to the writer who has artist friends, to the young woman who inherited pieces from her mother, to the actress whose art travels with her wherever she goes. The kinds of art that speak to them and that they are impelled to acquire range from old masters to outsider art, from folk art to contemporary art, to prints, drawings, photographs, and sculpture. We learn about what sparked their interest in a particular genre, how they make their selections, how they meld them into their homes, and what living with their art means to them.
Though looking at these interiors proves there are no fixed rules about displaying a work of art, special sections on framing, hanging, lighting, and caring for art, from oil paintings to delicate works on paper, provide technical assistance. A directory includes framers, dealers, auction houses, and restorers in major American cities and in London.
Above all,
At Home with Art shows that there are all kinds of art to be loved and cherished, however grand or simple, and that living surrounded by art's beauty can bring boundless personal satisfaction.
Customer Reviews:
An invitation into the homes of collectors........2000-12-31
This book is inspiring because it shows us the homes of many collectors of paintings. It is well written, but there are not enough new ideas that can be incorporated by the reader. Some of the collectors have little idea on how to display their paintings in a way that is pleasing and justifies the works. Many of the dispalys are cluttered and claustrophobic. Yet, there are some splendid homes that incorporate paintings spectacularly. The article on Dorothy and Herbert Vogel is very moving. These extra-ordinary people deserve a book just on them.
A unique and personal view of collecting.......2000-01-12
This is an extraordinary book. Clearly not intended as a scholarly exercise, the authors take us up close and personal with outstanding collectors and their art. These are people I would be unlikely ever to meet, and their personal views and how they are expressed through the works they surround themselves with provide a glimpse into the collecting mind. Many of the homes are wealthy, though some are artists who have accumulated works from their friends. The photos are spectacular, and give many ideas of how art can be integrated into one's home.
At Home With Art Not Your Home.......2000-01-06
Diving into this book, as an avid art collector, one might expect to learn how different people work with the art they possess. This book though is really for those who are stricly ardent and almost excessive collectors who like to jam pack their residences with works galore. What is missing from this text is a careful presentation of how many different types of people display their art. There is too much focus on furniture, collecting passions and interest, and not enough focus on ideas. Overall, I found this book to be somewhat mono-dimensional in the concepts portrayed of how others live with their art. More a picture of what the authors had preconceived than a search for the spectrum of ideas.

A Great Wyeth Book.......2005-10-20
Yes, this IS one of the great Andrew Wyeth books. Everyone interested in this great American artist will love it. This was my first Wyeth book. It was on my shelf for a long time, and I knew I liked his work. After my retirement in 2001, I began painting with watercolors and looked around for some work I liked for inspiration and found only Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth. Later, I was fortunate to see the Helga show in Omaha and found out how amazing Wyeth really is. I spent hours looking at these paintings trying to figure out how he was able to balance areas of color that looked almost poured on next to areas of almost photographic detail. I have read that that's what they call drybrush technique. Well, maybe so, but I call it sheer genius. As with all Wyeth reproductions in books, this one is good, but after you have seen the actual paintings, they are but pale shadows. Nevertheless, I love this book. It is the next best thing to being near a museum where you can see the originals. Wyeth is indeed an inspiration.
He must have been in love.......2005-06-19
I don't mean that Helga was his lover. Still, the artist has an intense experience of his model, and Helga was his model for 15 years.
This is an outstanding book in lots of ways. The subject matter is beyond belief, and the reproductions are good. The visual content is organized well: major pieces are chronological, and sketches and studies are gouped with the pieces they support. I find it very helpful to see the sketches, and see all the variations that Wyeth tried before committing to a more dmanding piece. Those groups of drawings are drawing lessons themselves, in how to explore a visual idea. The text is a bit thin, and says nearly nothing about Helga herself - not a flaw in the book, so much as a step short of what it could have been.
Most of all, the pictures are simply lovely. Helga was a very handsome woman, in her 50s in the lastest of these pictures. Not 'pretty' maybe, but very beautiful - at least, she is presented as very beautiful, and very real. Some of the nudes studies show her arms crossed, oddly compressing her natural curves. That just makes the pictures more genuine for me, showing her as she is, not made up to some anatomical ideal.
Explanatory text could have been more explanatory, but that's OK. The large majority of the book is just the pictures themselves, and I don't mind being alone with them.

Andrew Wyeth One of America's Finest Painters.......2005-05-31
For well over 25 years I have examined and reviewed countless paintings of the Wyeth family (N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, & Jamie Wyeth) who are all phenomenal painters. But the quality of the Compositions, the details of the clothing, nature and the human figure are an amazing spectacle when you review this book of Andrew's work. What an amazing technician he is.
Whether you're an art collector, painter or art critic you will admit that this book contains some of the most intriguing and interesting art.
Andrew Wyeth is a master at creating depth in each picture. The justaposition of figure to landscape or figure to interior items seems to be a heighted sense of "knowing" in Andrew's work. This book helped me to conclude that Andrew Wyeth is a genius who is in full command of his materials. If you think Steven Spielberg is a great film producer than it won't be hard for you to conclude that Andrew Wyeth is also a great painter.
The details in the picture "Farm Road" are excellent. Helga's hair is detailed as if painted with a laser while the leather strap from the bag she is carrying appears worn like real leather. The muted colors of green, brown and reddish tones in the coat and the rich transparency of light emanating from her cheek are amazingly done with subtlety and richness you will appreciate.
My degree in Accounting allows me to be able to count the hundreds of amazing things that are going on in each work while my degree in Art allows me to appreciate the quality of the brush work and the transparency range in each painting.
