5 out of 5 stars READ ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-30

This book is elementary reading(as stated in another review) but to someone that doesn't know a lot about these techniques, like myself, will find this book very informative indeed. This book involves rural and urban areas of infiltration technique. It involves countermeasures against detection. Gives you tactics on how to deceit the "guarding" dog and security personnel alike. It goes into everything from barbed wire fences to seismic detection cables ran under obstacles. How about foot stepping for stealth? Disappearing in shadows? Ingress and regress technique rules? Meditation techniques before the infiltration? YES! YES! YES! I am telling you this book is loaded with up-to-date tactics. I may be a beginner but I know a knowledgeable book when I read one. Detail is the ultimate success in this book. Easy reading and with practice, like everything else, easy learning!! GOING SOLO OR IN A TEAM. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Buy it! I honestly don't believe you will regret it. I am reading it for my 2nd. time through. There is also some history in it by the way to top it off. I hope you find this review helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Too much variance.......2006-12-19

The content in this book varied a great deal. Some of the information was presented and I began saying to myself, "Yes, that's true, and anyone who has interest in these things AND has common sense would see that" while some other information was incredibly interesting and certainly not your everyday type of knowledge.

I would agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the information was presented in an elementary way, but some of the information was fairly complex and should be read over a few times if the reader does not have an inclination to the detailed workings of the eye (one of the most interesting sections of the literature of the book). Again, there is variance, not only in the commonality of the informaiton (common sense vs. relatively unknown information), but the applicability of the information (some things could apply to anyone, anywhere at night and some would only apply if you were infiltrating an enemy base and a convoy was entering simultateously) AND the complexity of the information (some information could be understood easily by nearly anyone who could read the words themselves and other information requires prior knowledge to grasp well).

Finding a median somewhere would be helpful because the jumps in complexity etc did make the book much less useful and admirable than it could have been (as I'm confident Dr. Lung could make it). Nonetheless, I cannot ignore the useful information, which is why I give it the score I did.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of material covered.......2006-08-30

This is one of my favorite technical manuals I own. There are very few books I have found that focus on actual sneaking around. Instead of being like a military manual, it shows methods that even a single operator could utilize. Also focused on historical night fighters and time-tested methods, including ninja and middle eastern assassins. I'll have to admit the illustrations aren't that great, but they are adequate enough to get the point across. Unlike other books, you can tell that this one does not "hold back" information that some people would disagree against others being allowed to learn.

3 out of 5 stars QUestion.......2006-05-06

I was wondering what were some of the techniques, etc. for developing ur senses and other stuff. I want to know more in depth what this book says before I buy it.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference for this topic...........2004-07-14

This is the first book I've read by this author but not the first book of this kind I've read. I found Knights of Darkness to be quite engaging. The historical aspects of the book are quite good without being annoying. The author provides a healthy dose of history without making it a history book. Likewise, he provides a great deal of practical (or should I say "tactical"?) information which I found to be useful to someone in those kinds of endeavors. Along with this information, he also gives historical proof of it's effectiveness.

I was especially impressed by the section on developing your senses, as this is not the first time I've read this type of information. Several other books I've read mention the necessity, and advantage, of developing your senses. I am personally taking this to heart. After all, having better developed senses should benefit in all areas of life.

Mention has been made of the simplicity of this book. In defense of the author, the majority of people write on a third-grade level and read on a level not much higher. In an effort to reach the majority of readers, an author shouldn't write on a level challenging to college students. "Write simple, write for the masses."

I was also impressed with the author's inclusion of criminal organizations. Many authors would find including criminals as a "good example" to be distasteful. However, criminal organizations often use methods to achieve their goals which are wholly applicable to the topic of the book. As the author states, "If a tactic, technique, or training method works, use it, no matter what its origins. In other words, whatever gets you through the night."

In conclusion, I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. I would recommend it to anyone seeking information in this field.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the environment.......2007-07-25

Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some kind of unpleasant air pollution of late, so we feel proud to be putting something back.

5 out of 5 stars I now have a composting toilet behind the house.......2007-06-21

This was our primary source material for building and maintaining our composting toilet. Works great, saves on water, makes for good plant food, and only smells like sawdust inside.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2007-05-12

This book combines humor, biology, humor, facts, humor, and specific instructions. Did I mention humor? ;-)

It is also incredibly thought-provoking. The author points out that we are one of the few countries that defecate in our drinking water.

We now have two composting toilets. The one we spent over a $1000 for before we bought the book and the $50 one we built after we bought the book. Guess which one is easier to deal with?!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this!.......2007-03-12

Wonderful book that I wish everyone would read. Great information.

1 out of 5 stars Insightful and well grounded book.......2007-03-10

The author created a masterpiece with this book, combining his vast experience of producing humanure with scientific insight, and great humor which made the book fun to read. I'm convinced that composting manure is the safest way to safely deal with our own excrement. Our society has got to be crazy to be flushing this immensely valuable resource to be dealt with later as it ends up polluting our rivers, oceans, and drinking water. I highly recommend this book to any concious reader who would like to greatly reduce their impact upon this earth.

    Product Description

Chris Shaw spent ten years working in London hotels, all the while using his camera to both document the hotels unexpected human spectacles and keep himself awake through the long hours of his shift. Whether capturing prostitutes waiting between Johns, weary hotel staff, the inebriated and profligate guests, or the details of the hotels faded grandeur, Shaws images transcend the physical boundaries of a place, and instead capture a state of mind in which few people would choose to stay more than a night. "The thing I like most about the pictures is the large element of what I call the chance meeting, the times I was so tired I lost the artifice and techniques of photography. I just took photographs to keep me awake. It became artless. The people I photographed, these episodes in the social fantastic would heighten and illuminate my whole night, often making a difficult job and my twelve-hour shift bearable. The sum of the book is really a hotel of my own imagination constructed from several hotels I have worked in and some Ive stayed in as a paying guest. In reality these hotels bear little or no resemblance to my actual pictures. It just depends on how you look at things. In my experience heaven and hell are places right here on earth, and you can stay in either one." --Chris Shaw

5 out of 5 stars Pictures capture the chance meeting and the finer world of hotel life.......2006-07-24

Photographer Chris Shaw spent ten years working in London hotels, using his camera to document the hotel's patrons and oddities and keeping himself awake on the late shift. LIFE AS A NIGHT PORTER offers a shelving challenge to libraries; but as an exhibit piece or addition to a serious college-level photography library holding, it can't be beat. Pictures capture the chance meeting and the finer world of hotel life, with large-size, often murky, black and white photos of employees and residents alike capturing and documenting another night world. It's a rich world of the underworld and comes to life in Shaw's presentation.

      Book Description

In the tradition of Brassa''s Paris at Night, Peter Hujar's Night brings together 43 hauntingly beautiful images of New York City. These pictures--most published here for the first time--illuminate a New York that has all but disappeared, one populated by the late-night demimonde, crumbling cobblestone streets, and landfills before the coming of Battery Park. Photographing costumed Halloween partygoers, dilapidated domestic interiors, cruisy city parks, and trash-strewn parking lots, Hujar has left behind his own unique record of New York streets and their denizens, one as indelible as that of Weegee or Berenice Abbott. In a time before AIDS and a downtown before gentrification, Hujar's sometimes playful, often bleak photographs have an underlying sadness that is bound in the palpable mortality of his subjects, from revelers to decaying urban landscapes, all wrapped in a velvety blackness broken only by street lamps, fluorescent office windows, and his camera's flash.

        Book Description

Today's cities shine brightly at night, illuminated by millions of street lamps, neon signs, and incandescent and fluorescent bulbs burning in the windows of office blocks, apartment buildings, and homes. Indeed, the modern city is in large part defined by this brilliance. In contrast, cities before the end of the 19th century were dominated by shadows and darkness, their oil lamps mostly ineffectual against the night. The introduction of modern lighting technologies in the 1870s--at first natural gas and later electricity--transformed urban life in America and around the world.

This promethean story and its impact on the shape and pace of life in the American city is engagingly recounted by John A. Jakle in City Lights. Jakle reveals how artificial lighting became a dynamic instrument that altered every aspect of the urban landscape and was in turn shaped by the growth of America's automobile culture. He examines the technological and entrepreneurial innovations that made urban illumination possible and then explores the various ways in which artificial lighting was used to enhance -- for reasons of commerce, safety, aesthetics, and mobility -- such public spaces as streets, festivals, world's fairs, amusement parks, landmarks, and business districts. From the corner street lamp to the dazzling display of Broadway's "Great White Way," City Lights offers a lively and informative investigation into the geography of the night.

I got this book when I was a kid, I could not put it down! It is a great introduction into the world of HAMs, and also has a great description of the Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area, which was interesting when I later walked through the real place.

5 out of 5 stars Amateur Radio to the rescue!.......2003-02-23

I just finished reading this book. I could not put it down! It goes into details about a search and rescue of a 19-year old lost in the mountains. He's a ham radio operator who was hiking up a mountain to take school off his mind. As the tension mounts, ham radio becomes more and more important to being the key to his survival. This book would be of interest to anyone who is even remotely interested in radio communications and amateur radio. In fact, I would recommend this book to a non-ham to get them interested in it! It is definitely worth the 5 stars I gave it.

          Book Description

Daniel Clark demonstrates the dramatic impact unionization made on the lives of textile workers in Henderson, North Carolina, in the decade after World War II. Focusing on the Harriet and Henderson Cotton Mills, he shows that workers valued the Textile Workers Union of America for more than the higher wages and improved benefits it secured for them. Specifically, Clark points to the importance members placed on union-instituted grievance and arbitration procedures, which most labor historians have seen as impediments rather than improvements.

From the signing of contracts in 1943 until a devastating strike fifteen years later, the union gave local workers the tools they needed to secure at least some measure of workplace autonomy and respect from their employer. Union-instituted grievance procedures were not without flaws, says Clark, but they were the linchpin of these efforts. When arbitration and grievance agreements collapsed in 1958, the result was the strike that ultimately broke the union. Based on complete access to company archives and transcripts of grievance hearings, this case study recasts our understanding of labor-management relations in the postwar South.

            Book Description

This sequel to our enormously popular Bonfires and Beacons features 45 more lighthouses on Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior, on both sides of the American-Canadian border. The rugged rocks and vast forests of the Great Lakes region drove early settlers and merchants to develop elaborate shipping networks. As we drive along their shores today, these lakes may appear easy to navigate, but swift currents, hidden reefs and shoals, shifting sandbars, uncharted passages and fierce, fast-moving storms made early navigation a mariner's nightmare. Remarkable stone, brick and wood lighthouses were erected to light the night and safely guide lakefarers in their schooners, steamers, brigs, barques and sloops. Any of these noble structures have fallen into disrepair or have been torn down in the name of progress, but the surviving lights have become monuments to an exciting period in our history and points of pilgrimage for millions.

So to night-wandering sailors pale with fear Wide o'er the watery waste a light appears Which on the far-seen mountain blazing high Streams the lonely watchtower to the sky

            Book Description

A follow-up to The Big Dig--a huge regional success!--the Big Dig that is transforming Boston's downtown is the largest construction project in history. Through a gallery of nighttime photos you can stand at vantage points not even the construction workers have ever viewed. See how state-of-the-art underground and underwater tunnels are relieving traffic congestion as they replace the brutally ugly elevated highway, and how the city's urban center is being re-connected to its glorious waterfront with beautiful open spaces and quiet urban parks.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Dig.......2004-02-16

I bought this book, along with The Big Dig at Night, for my husband, a Boston native. He loved both the books, but would really have wanted, in addition, more detailed maps in the changes that have been made.

1 out of 5 stars All in Skivvies!.......2003-03-13

What is truly remarkable about this book is that the photographer completed his work wearing nothing but boxer shorts!

            1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2003-01-22

I was excited to recieve this book as a holiday gift, but after taking the time to go through it I find I am very disappointed by the generic quality of the photographs. I thought I'd be seeing something new, but it doesn't show me anything I couldn't see myself. Too bad the project is now basically finished and these tired images will be part of the permanent record of the true engineering miracle of the Big Dig. The project and the people who made it deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars A Perspective Most of Us Never See.......2002-12-16

A facinating look at a huge construction project at a time of day most of us are asleep. Of interest for those of us who live with it daily, as well as for those interested in photography and/or construction of difficult and large projects. The images, taken at night with available light and a variety of cameras, provide an unique view into the site and night photography.

5 out of 5 stars Eerie and Beautiful.......2002-12-16

I love picking this book up again and again to flip through the photos. It makes me want to go out and take more photos at night. The views of the Big Dig would be impossible for anyone but this photographer to get--really unique, interesting angles, with a real eye for color, shape and texture. The photos do justice to the monumental nature of the project. Highly recommended--makes a great "coffee table" book. The printing is glossy and sumptuous.
