A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

An amazing introduction to the genre.......2007-08-25
I was recommened this anthology by a friend as a good first book to try in the m/m erotica genre, and WOW, I was blown away! I enjoyed every single story, and I can honestly say that that has never been true of any kind of anthology I've read before. I liked some more than others - Stormclouds, Dry Bones and Surrender were exceptional - but I didn't dislike any of them. All were instantly engaging *and* believeable in a very short space, whereas so many other anthology stories I've read have not been able to pull that off.
I was also pleasantly surprised at how romantic the stories were - I appreciated the hot sex, but was really hooked by the depth of emotion portrayed within such a broad range of characters. I even teared up several times, and in my head all of the couples who might live happily ever after, do.
Kudos, also, to editer Rob Knight, who put them all together for me. I will absolutely be recommending this to friends, but I'm not sharing my copy!
Save a Horse: Ride A Cowboy!.......2007-04-03
Wow! Rob Knight found some truly HOT stories here. I liked them all and felt they all had not only sizzling sex, but, more importantly, some really good plot lines. Some of them should have been written as full length books, especially my favorite: Jourdan Lane's "Surrender." Hot, sexy cowboys steaming with mutual attraction and, at the same time, serious conflicts between them. Lane's story could well be the core of a much longer, even more satisfying book developing not only the two protagonists but a couple of the secondary characters as well. Not all of the stories ended "happily ever after," but they were satisfying in their conclusions. This book is well worth a try, and it will prove to be hard (so to speak) to put down.
Amazing Stories.......2007-02-27
This book contains amazing stand alone stories about life and love. I was expecting just erotic interludes, but this book is sooo much more. Each story envoked a different emotion from me, and no two stories are the same. I was most surprised by Sean Michael's story. My fav was Chris Owen's story. She is fast becoming my number one.
I recommend this book, as one reviewer said, truly a "treasure".
Well Thought Out and Sexy!.......2006-11-28
This was not what I expected. These stories are long, little books within a book. Truly great stories. Hot and beautiful. I have no regrets. Cowboy up.
Cowboy gay romance at its best!.......2006-09-22
This amazing collection from Torquere press is a must have for us into M/M romance. From the relatively lighted hearted "Barn Dance" by BA Tortuga to the poignant "This Legacy in My Hands" by Vic Winter, there is not a lame one in this collection. Each one is well written filled with angst and emotional content and of course the hot sex. My favorite is Dry Bones by Parhelion, which is just a few notches above the rest. This is a gem of a story which left me wishing for more. The highly charged "Stomclouds" by D Coleman is a close second followed by "Above Snakes" by AM Riley about overcoming fear of being a gay cowboy. "Surrender" by J Lane is a delightful read and there is just something in "The Gaucho Code" by J Talbot which just tugs at my heart strings. Definitely a collection to be treasured.
Book Description
Samantha
When she manages to get herself hired for the cattle drive, all of Samantha's prayers seem to be answered. The hundred dollars she'll earn will pull her family's Texas farm out of ruin and pay off their debts. But keeping the cowhands fooled that she's a boy becomes harder than she'd expected where one cowboy in particular is concerned.
The Cowboy
Matthew Hart wants two things: to forget the tragedies he witnessed on the front lines of the War Between the States, and to reclaim his cowboy life. The last thing he wants is the responsibility of a tagalong youngster on the cattle drive. His closed mind and hardened heart are territory best left unexplored, until a fateful moment turns his world upside down.
Matt discovers what and who "Sam" really is, and he is furious. But soon a stronger emotion takes hold, and bound by Samantha's secret, Matt is torn between revealing her identity and his own sudden and frightening love for her.
Customer Reviews:
Samantha and The Cowboy.......2006-02-01
Samantha was now Sam. There was no escaping the feeling of having to pretend she was a boy. But the hardest part was making sure no one found out. After getting her mother to agree to let her go on a cattle drive to earn a hundred dollars, Samantha starts to fall in love with Matt the handsome young cowboy on the drive. After crossing the river, where she nearly drowns, he finds out her secret. She was not Sam the boy he was a friend with; she was Samantha Jane who now he was beginning to fall in love with. When Jake, the trail boss, finds out she is a boy, he orders Matt to take her to the train station. But Matt stands up to him along with the other men on the drive. She now knew she was a true trail hand. When Samantha returns home with the hundred dollars, she is just in time for the town dance. Matt shows up, and they spend the whole night dancing. They end up spending the rest of their lives together. I liked this book and would recommend it to any one who likes adventure and romance.
This book has very vivid details. There was one time when Samantha thought that one of the men was going to figure out her secret when the author describes her breathing: " Her breathing started coming in shallow little pants as though it was as afraid as she was that the fella would figure out she was a girl." I like the way he describes things, he makes me feel that I'm in the book.
This book expresses the emotions of the characters very well. When Samantha and Matt are having fights, you can see how much she tries to stop the fights and just likes pleasing everyone. ""She thought she'd go crazy if he kept up this silent treatment. It was such a peaceful night, a good night for mending fences." "I love herding cattle at night," she said quietly. "I find it calming." Silence. Heavy, palpable. Thick enough to slice with a butter knife. "I reckon we're really lucky that the cattle didn't stampede this morning." Nothing from him. Not even a turn of his head. "Have you gone deaf?" she snapped. The only thing worse than being yelled at was being ignored. "How long do you plan to stay angry?" she asked. "Forever." The pain cut into her like a rusty bayonet. She didn't want to admit how much she'd come to like him, to care about him. What ever the feeling is the author makes it powerfully known.
I liked the character Samantha because she was brave and did something that women back then wouldn't have thought of doing. She didn't mind doing what she had to do, even if it was dangerous. She faced all of her fears and became a good trail hand, even when the odds were against her because she was a girl and had never done anything like that before.
Samantha and The Cowboy is a book that is adventurous and touches the heart all at the same time. Anyone, who reads this book, will instantly fall in love with it.
Definitely one I will read over and over.......2005-07-07
This book was not the least bit boring. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I had read the entire book. From this book, I was able to taste the real flavor of the south, and the life of a cowboy on the prairie. Something about that wide open expanse of land and that bright sun shining in the blue sky, with dozens of hot cowboys riding their horses just does it for me.
I'm not going to give a summary of the book, because plenty of other reviews already have, but I will tell you what I loved about this book.
It was so fun to see how the main character convinced the cowhands that she was a boy. And when the boys stripped down in front of "Sam" to take a dip in the river--not knowing she was a girl...now that was priceless!
And when Matt found out that Sam was a girl after he saved her from the river...and suddenly began noticing her soft "girlish" features, such as her beautiful green eyes, delicate hands, and of course her curves. He was furious of course, because she had lied to him, but he was instantly attracted to her and couldn't stop thinking about how much he wanted to hold her. This made it extremely difficult for Matt to decide whether or not he would give Samantha's secret away, which would cause her to be kicked off the cattle drive and destroy her chances for earning the lifesaving $100 dollars for her struggling family.
Well, I don't want to give the whole book away, so I'll let you read it yourself, and leave you by telling you that this was a funny, colorful, romantic story set against the backdrop of the South after the Civil War.
And if you love this book, you will probably also love Lorraine Heath's other Avon True Romance Novel for Teens, called Amelia and the Outlaw.
very cool.......2004-04-27
this was one of the best avon true romance books that i have read so far!! i especially like the part where matt finds out that samantha is a girl. boy is he mad at first! (excuse the pun) if you didn't read this book yet i really recommend it.
Go Samantha!.......2003-10-22
I didn't think this book looked good from reading the first chapter, but it definitely gets better. Samantha's family is having a hard time since her father died and her brother lost his arm in the war. She signs up for a cattle drive, and the adventure begins! She actually makes a band of cowboys think she is a boy. Soon she falls in love with Matt, a fellow cowboy. But she can't say anything, because she's a boy. Eventually Matt finds out she is a girl and gives Sam a run for her money, literally. He threatens to tell on her, which causes a big problem. But everything works out in the end and everybody lives happily ever after.
too-tame bodice-ripper.......2003-08-04
Avon True Romance presents Harlequin-style fare: beautiful people fall in love at first sight and then must overcome some conflict to be together, the conflict usually being that one of them already has a significant other. In this series, the beautiful people happen to be young adults.
In Samantha and the Cowboy, a southern belle who has spent much of the war supporting her family and doing a man's work disguises herself as a boy and joins a cattle herding expedition to make the $100 her family so desperately needs to get through the coming winter. She falls for the man who hired her against the boss's wishes. Matt distances himself from people because of all the friends he lost in the war, and doesn't take kindly at first to being saddled with a greenhorn, but "Sam" breaks through his reserves.
The stories are predictable, sweet and innocent, but the writing is solid, the covers attractive and the historical details accurate. I don't think any teens will pick these up if they are already avid fans of adult series romance, but younger teens may find them appealing and won't find any objectionable material -- perhaps to their dismay.
Book Description
Whether destined to be remembered or forgotten, a cowhand clung to life with all the zeal with which he approached his trade. He was the most loyal of employees, repeatedly putting his neck on the line for a mere dollar a day. Patrick Dearen has brought these reckless and risky adventures to life with colorful stories from interviews with 76 men who cowboyed in the West before 1932 as well as 150 archival interviews and written accounts from as early as the 1870s and well into the mid-twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Telling it like it was.......2006-12-29
Patrick Dearen, a professional journalist and inveterate outdoorsman, writes well and fairly on this unusual subject. He paints a true picture of old time West Texas, its denizens, and of a time now mostly past. This readable account has excellent bibliographic references. The best part is its authenticity and plain entertaining style. It is simply a winner.
Uses actual stories from cowboys before the 1930s.......2006-10-15
SADDLING UP ANYWAY: THE DANGEROUS LIVES OF OLD-TIME COWBOYS uses actual stories from cowboys before the 1930s to blend tales with accounts of heroism and life on the early frontier. A glossary of cowboy language and terminology helps in understanding the accounts, while chapters discuss the duties and lives of the frontier hand.

The Reason Why Books Are Written.......2006-07-20
Bravo to Mike Flanagan. I bought Cowboy Up! and Rigged To Ride back in mid-1999. I didn't like to read much because it seemed that every book I read was "boring". Then again I was in High School and they never chose good/interesting books. I read Cowboy Up! after I first read it, then I hit this phase of not wanted to read, it wasn't because the book was bad, it was more or less not wanted to finish the series because I never wanted it to end. So, by the summer of 2002 I read Mike's second book Rigged to Ride, boy did he do a great job of continuing the swell adventure. I bought his final book "Final Ride" right after it was released and again after I finished the second book I didn't want this awesome adventure to end, so I let it sit on the shelf and collect dust. So now it comes to the present time, July 2006 and I travel by bus a lot to and from work so I need to kill some time so I looked at the book and decided to finish up this series. Spectacular ending, I wish there was more but from the ending I can dream what may have happened. Mike has enlightned to keep on reading and never fear for an ending. Yes, I will miss reading about Clay, Jack, Billy, Tamara, Julie, Terry, etc..., but I will never forget the enjoyable time I had reading these books. This book made me feel like I was a part of it, and I mean that like "The Neverending Story" type of way. I would promote this book anyway that I could. It's great for all ages and an easy read. If you have not read this book yet, do yourself a favor and buy them.
Realistic Rodeo.......2001-11-13
As a participant in various rodeo events and activities, as well as a avid reader of Western contemporary novels, I am use to plain, dull novels in which the author rambles about a topic he or she has no knowledge about. However, this novel captures the reality in every detail no matter how stark it may be to create a remarkable series of events producing the images in one's mind with every fluid word. The author's use of desciptive adjectives provides fuel for a reader aware of the rodeo atmosphere, while also providing ample definative sentences, hindering a unknowledgable reader from making conjectures as to the meaning of various Western and rodeo lingo. The novel accounts the struggles between a lonesome rancher carrying a heavy burden, and a troubled teenager who is a up and coming rodeo legend. They need each other in their own ways, and throughout the novel their triumphs and pitfalls are emphasized in glorious detail, absolving the rancher's heavy burden in the conclusion. Anyone who enjoys the Western contemporary novels would benefit themselves by reading this novel. All to often the author of such novels have no bearing on the subject, and hence loses the reader in the muddle. This novel is crystal clear to all providing knowledge, and compelling the reader to continue on in the exquisative adventure that evolves throughout. It causes the reader to cheer in the triumphs, and fall in silence with the pitfalls. The author always keeps the reader's interest and attention, and causes wonderment as to what will evolve next. The novel engrosses everything that makes up the West and rodeo capturing the tradition that rodeo emphasizes. Warning, this book may entrall the reader preventing the reader from laying in down.
Cowboy Up!.......2001-06-14
This was an excellent book! If your interested in something light and easy to read this is the book for you. It was very entertaining and enjoyable, especially since I know a little about rodeoing.
Great books for all Ages.......2000-05-18
I really liked this book. The story was so great that I couldn't put the book down. This is a book that mom's can recommend to their children. The language was not offensive and their was no sex in the book. This fact along makes it a great book for teens.
The Book For You.......2000-02-05
It's a graet book for all ages. Cowboy Up is a story of one man's struggle to come to terms with his past and a young boy's struggle to build a future. Together they form a bond, through the sport of rodeo that will be tested to the limits. I can't wait until the second book, Rigged To Ride comes out. If you get a chance then you should read it.
