I had borrowed this book from the county library but I ended up buying myself a copy after I finished reading it in just one day. I loved it so much after reading just a couple of pages from the book. I've seen many different side of the story to the Empress from different authors but I would have to say that I love Anchee Min perspective better. I realized that I was feeling what the empress was feeling through out this book and the sequel, which I also bought "The last empress". Its a must read. After reading both books, I did the research myself. Wow! I can't believe such thing exists in history. This is the best book I have ever read and bought!

I highly recommend it if you are interested to learn about China and like a great story that pulls you in completely. Extremely well written. Smart, colorful, solid writing. I read it in a day and a half, could not put it down.
The story continues in "The Last Empress". Read the first book first otherwise it's not a full picture.

This book has alot of practical information and has much more detailed culture information about many different orchid families, also has information about small orchid families that I have not found in any other book about orchids.This book also gives step by step instructions on how to repot or divide several different types of orchids including paphiopediliums and Phrags.

I am an amateur orchid grower and have read a variety of books on the subject. So far, this is the best book I encountered and the most comprehensive. Not only that, it is a work of art, printed on high quality of paper. The pictures are outstanding and so is the carefully written text. This book is also just loaded with inexpensive ideas on various small projects that you can do to improve your results. If you are going to get one book on orchids, this should be it!

I believe that this is the best book out there on orchids. Mr Cullina covers the important and often allusive culture issues confronted in growing orchids in real depth. He provides thoughtful, comon sense explanations for his reccomendations that go way beyond those found in other books I have read on the subject. The second half of the book details the cultural requirements and rates the difficulty level of 100 species of potential interest to growers with experience levels from beginner to expert. Much more than a coffee table book, Understanding Orchids is a valuable reference that belongs in every orchid enthuiast's library.

As a relatively new orchid grower, I found this to be one of the most useful books for a beginner. In addition, it is written is a very accessible, friendly style, with many examples of the author's struggles to succeed with orchids. I highly recommend it!
A great book for beginners.......2006-11-05
I bought this book as I was starting into the hobby of Orchids. The book is extremely informative on the basics and attempts to discuss common problems people have with Orchids. The most interesting sections are those on potting mediums and the individual orchid varieties commonly found at florists or even the grocery store.
biggest problem with the book is that it seems to convey the idea that any of the solutions will work which is not the case. Successful orchid growing requires an understanding through trial and error of what will work in your home. There are some basic tenants for everyone; however, they get lost in the details.
All in all, it's a great reference book and I would strongly recommend it.

I looked through a variety of popular orchid books before purchasing this one. I found it to be the most comprehensive. It covers different growing environments (indoor, outdoor, under glass), care, cultivation, and diseases. The directory includes a description, complete with beautiful photos. Chapters are presented in a logical manner. My husband has extensive experience in growing a variety of flowers including azaleas and clivias. He found this book had many helpful and specific tips on orchid growing.

This book doesn't have many pictures of orchids but it does have a lot of good, basic information. I have and use several books including Ortho's All About Orchids and Complete Guide to Orchids and Rittershausen's Growing Orchids. I've learned from all of them. Orchids for Dummies has suggestions that none of the others have. It also has a good index.

This is a great book for beginners growing Orchids. The only drawback I saw was whether or not to prune after the blooms fall. I still don't have the answer to that question. But this book does cover a lot of other areas and was easy to follow and understand.

Orchids and those who love them.......2007-09-16
This is an interesting book about the obsessions and lengths of the people who love and collect orchids. There are ups and downs in this account.
The story is well told. The main character is John Laroche, a huckster in trouble with Florida authorities for poaching orchids from public lands. Orlean tells Laroche's story, while using it as a springboard to examine the various aspects of the obsession with orchids some people have. There are stories of orchids being stolen from growers, certain strains fetching high prices from foreign buyers, and an obsession bordering on madness in collectors of the flower. There are very few lengths to which collectors and poachers will not go to get their hands on prize orchids.
Laroche himself is a complicated figure. On one hand, he is a criminal who has always tried to come up with get rich quick schemes to avoid working. He has a broken moral compass and thinks nothing of doing things to people not accepted by society. But, Orlean also explores the backstory that made Laroche who he is. We learn of his failed marriages, bad family life, and the crummy luck he has experienced. He comes out as being a complicated character. By the end of the book, I didn't know if I should root for or against him.
The main drawback is that Orlean sometimes goes into too much detail about side issues and minor stories. These digressions take away from the general flow of the book rather than enriching it.
This is a good nonfiction book, especially for those interested in environmental matters.

I expected this to be more about the Orchid Thief, so I was disappointed somewhat by Ms. Orlean's sashaying into Florida history and Seminole history.
When I came to the conclusion that it was as good a book as I'd heard it to be, I was happily surprised!
I've been introduced to hydroponic orchid growing, and it was important to get a feel of the hobby/art!

Actually, watch Being John Malkovich before you read it and Adaptation (Superbit Collection) afterwards.
Adaptation deals with the problems that Charlie Kaufman, played by Nicolas Cage, had adapting this book into a screenplay. It is remarkably true to the book, and Meryl Streep is wonderful as Susan Orlean.
I read the book after seeing the film, and wish I had done it in reverse order.
Like many other reviewers, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but have nothing to add to their comments.
Interesting magazine article with a lot of filler........2007-01-04
This book is interesting yet, as has already been mentioned in other reviews, it probably should have stayed a magazine article. The book, which is already printed in large font, has a lot of sections that are obvious filler to increase the page count. I could forgive these off topic filler sections if they were at least entertaining but unfortunately they are not.

This book has stunning photographs of all kinds of orchids. If you like the front cover, you are sure to like this book. The book is large, not only coffee-table size, but also very thick (and heavy!). With the gorgeous pictures, it would make a wonderful gift for any orchid lover. Unfortunately I haven't seen the main competition, the book "Orchids" so I can't say how they compare, but I can't imagine going wrong with this book.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my mother who is an Orchid nutbag. She was absolutely amazed at the book and how many amazing pictures there were in it. She said it's so big and has so much information that it will take her months to get through all of it.

The style of this encyclopedia is quite pleasing and the colors are spectacular. I have two comments, however. First, the book is very heavy, unwieldy for a reference book. The second remark refers to the choice of clones, especially hybrids, that seems limited to the photographs on hand, leaving many interesting primary hybrids out to the advantage of many (too many) hybrids that are difficult to find, and, in many cases, not very interesting. The book would have been better if it limited itself to species, many of which are missing (e.g. about 15 Cattleya species)or to primary hybrids. Obviously a commercial choice of "pretty pictures" without much information, like parents... Additionally, botanicals are very sparse, although many orchidists are looking for information on them.
In other words, a hybrid book for non-experts, which must be supplemented by many other sources to be truly useful.
What species are there are well done.

This is absolutely the best book dedicated to Orchids. It is a great source of information and has an amazing amount of astonishing photos. A real work of art!!! Every Orchid enthusiast must have this book in his/her library. Deffinitely a great book.
A magnificent book.......2005-10-02
Not only a magnificent book, but also a very useful update (and a replacement) to the out of date Encyclopaedia of Cultivated Orchids (Alex Hawkes), as well as more encyclopedic than Home Orchid Growing (Rebecca Northern) and far better photographed than my old edition of The Manual of Cultivated Orchid Species (Bechtel, Cribb, Launert), or similar texts on highly specific orchid plants such as the various (equally wonderful) books on Vandas and Catasetums. The few 'errata' that I've seen (a misclassified Nobile dendrobium hybrid, a flipped picture) and a handful of different hybrid names that I've never heard of (Kunthara vs. Burrageara) are minor. Exquisite pictures, readable text (without resorting to too much botanical jargon), beautifully laid out, this is a real joy to add to anyone's orchid library.

Delightful Way to Spend an Afternoon.......2006-12-09
I listened to this book as a book on CD and was not disappointed. I'd listened to one of the Stone Barrington books and was only marginally impressed. Almost didn't pick this one up, but I'm glad I did.
Holly Barker is Police Chief of a small town in Florida. Boring, right? Well, once events uncommon to this small town start happening, bullets start flying. Not to mention sparks between her and a delightful undercover FBI agent--Grant Early (not his real name, of course. He is undercover after all!).
While the guilty person was no surprise, the why was.
Since I haven't read Stuart Woods' other books, I had nothing to compare this to and found it delightful. I will definitely choose another Holly Barker book - and hope her new FBI love is in it. He was delightful.
Holly Barker is an idiot........2006-09-26
In this one, small town Police Chief Holly Barker is faced with possible big time mob connections. Is it drugs? Money laundering? Simply high-stakes real estate? One thing for certain, it involves murder and the bodies are piling up. Holly finds a new love interest (as does her father Ham) and once again, the FBI gets involved, much to Holly's consternation.
This is the second Holly Barker book I have read (gifts from a friend) and I really don't think I'll read any more. This one has a bit more emotion than the first I read (Orchid Beach), but it still reads more like a police report - i.e. dull. I do like the character of Grant (Holly's new love interest), but he's really the only character in this book I cared about. Ham Barker isn't in this one much, but I still like him - he's good for some irreverent comic relief, and even FBI agent Harry Crisp started to show some life in this one. Holly, however is a grade A idiot. How the heck did she become Police Chief? I knew who was behind it all the moment the bullet hit the orchid pot! When someone breaks into her house (and this happens early on, so I'm not giving much away), her first reaction is that some pervert broke in to sniff her panties. WHAT? I literally cried out loud that "Your house is bugged, you moron!" She stumbles through things, blabbs to all and sundry about confidential and classified information that endangers her own life as well as others. She's just too stupid to care about!
The final scene is cute, but I'm not so sure it was worth trudging through the rest of the book for.
Another excellent Holly Barker novel!.......2006-08-23
This is Holly's last job in Orchid Beach as Chief of Police before she joins the CIA. It's an excellent story, as all of Stuart Woods' stories are and Stu must know some great women because he writes them quite well. Holly's a star and a great dame and I love the characters in his novels. It's another question of finding out what's going on at Blood Orchid. You'll enjoy it and when you're done, get IRON ORCHID!
BLOOD ORCHID - DOESNT REALLY SMELL!!!!.......2005-08-14
This is a first read by me of Stuart Woods. I found it an entertaining, quick read with a lot of constant action.
Holly and Grant were very amusing. Daisy was my favorite. Very intelligent and added nicely to the plot. Yes, I knew almost immediately who the bad guy was but there was a surprise or two that I liked.
By the time I flew from Tampa to Boston, this book was finished and enjoyed. It did not come up to my Dennis Lehane, Lee Child, Robert Crais standards but I liked it just the same. So there!!!!! :D :D :D

I am a huge Stuart Woods fan and like most of his books. This one is just so-so. It is one of those books that if you have a flight to Denver from Fort Lauderdale and have a day of flying to kill in airports and in the air and the news stand you are trying to buy a book from stinks and only has about 5 books to choose from this book is perfect.

Gourmet Raw Food Made Easy.......2007-10-01
"I am Grateful" is my favourite raw food recipe book. The instructions are clear, the seasoning exquisite and the required ingredients manageable. For some of the upmarket raw food preparation books, you need to shop for a week to get all of the ingredients!!! What's also great is that lots of the recipes are illustrated so you know what it should look like. Some chefs can be heavy on the salt and sugar but Cafe Gratitude gets it just right. A must for anyone serious about the raw food lifestyl
Irish moss in Desserts.......2007-08-16
I've used many of the recipes in this book and they're great! With regard to another comment that was posted about the difficulty in finding Irish moss, the book references purelivingfoods.com for nut milk bags and Irish moss but the website is actually purejoyplanet.com I've ordered both products and they work really well. Just make sure to blend up the Irish moss completely before you add the other ingredients and you'll be on your way! It really does make the desserts come out light and fluffy.

I've got a fair number of raw food cookbooks; this one is up high on the list. The recipes that I've tried have all been very good with little to no modifications needed. Highly recommended. My one frustration is that several of the desserts use irish moss, and that has been difficult to find. But hey, branching out into new foods is good, right?
best raw food cookbook I have.......2007-08-03
This is definitely the best raw cookbook I own. Recipes are wonderful, they are easy to modify, and I love the stories that accompany them. There is a thoughtful resource guide and glossary included with the book.
I've been to Cafe Gratitude in Bezerkeley [ok officially I believe the town is known as Berkeley] several times. Each time it has been an adventure. Making delicious macadamia nut ice cream with caramel sauce with NO dairy still blows my mind.
I'd love to see a Cafe Gratitude spring up in the south bay!

The recipes in this book are a unbelieveably amazingly fabulously delicious. I am completely blown away! The only problem is that I find some of the directions ambiguous and it has taken some experimentation to figure out what is meant and to get them right. It has been so worth the effort though!
