Book Description
“I don’t have two lives,” Annie Leibovitz writes in the Introduction to this collection of her work from 1990—2005. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.” Portraits of well-known figures–Johnny Cash, Nicole Kidman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Keith Richards, Michael Jordan, Joan Didion, R2-D2, Patti Smith, Nelson Mandela, Jack Nicholson, William Burroughs, George W. Bush with members of his Cabinet–appear alongside pictures of Leibovitz’s family and friends, reportage from the siege of Sarajevo in the early Nineties, and landscapes made even more indelible through Leibovitz’s discerning eye. The images form a narrative rich in contrasts and continuities: The photographer has a long relationship that ends with illness and death. She chronicles the celebrations and heartbreaks of her large and robust family. She has children of her own. All the while she is working, and the public work resonates with the themes of her life.
Customer Reviews:
Great photography book.......2007-09-17
I've been wanting this book for a while and to have found it here for under $75 I was excited and bought it immediately. A Photographer's Life: 1990-2005 by Annie Leibovitz mixes photos of famous faces and intimate photos of her family, close friends and a few landscapes. I really enjoyed all of the photos. The book is so big I have yet to get through the whole thing! It was well worth the money I am defiantly now a fan of Leibovitz.
not a copiest.......2007-09-14
Great artists are inspired by others and yes, one can see other photographer's work in Annie's. I consider her one of the greats, right up there with Irving Penn, Avedon, Mapplethorpe and found the text very interesting. This book is a bargain considering the depth of information and production quality.
The size of this book!.......2007-09-10
I was surprised at the size of this book! It is much thicker and larger than what I thought and I think it is good value for money. It provides the reader with an insight into the photographer's life and gives the book a very intimate feel. Not all the pictures are flattering to Ms Leibovitz and her relatives and seeing these ordinary photos of people not looking at their best makes you feel as if you are looking at people that you also know. An interesting mix of photos of celebrities and everyday people is presented.
One point of critisizm - why do they print a good photo over two pages and then cut it in half by the page break? A good picture deserves to be printed on one page so as to see it as a whole.
A Celebration of Ugly and I Don't Care.......2007-09-01
This book is perfect for today's society and culture.
Page after page I couldn't help thinking that Ms. Liebowitz was getting back at everyone because God made her so unattractive. It seems it runs in the family -- the photo of her sisters would frighten a scarecrow. Her parents look like fools, the photos of Sontag are disrespectful, and even Brad Pitt is at his worst. Ugly, ugly, ugly...
Yes the world is cruel and not everyone nor everything can be beautiful... it is merely that this book is blatantly defensive.
Well ... is exactly like the title says ..........2007-08-26
... no more no less.
Do not expect to see more than an "allowed invasion" on her life in B&W.
Self promotion, just it. But who didn't, right?
If you can take some lessons "through her personal eyes", good for you.
I believe from everything you can take something good.

Akaine: Her Life, Her Art, Her Poetry.......2007-08-01
I love this book. I have recently purchased 5 so I can give them away to my family and friends
Remarkable Story, Remarkable Talent.......2007-07-24
Whether or not you are a Christian the story of this remarkable young girl will inspire you. Her artwork and poetry will touch your heart and stretch your imagination.
Akiane.......2007-07-12
I am the great believer in never putting anyone/thing on a pedestal. Time changed all. However, Akiane is the nearest anyone has come to breaking my stance. The book is written not from a professional angle, but rather from a good lay person, which to me is a better way for an autobiagraphy for someone so young. An astounding account of what she has achieved so far. A must read for anyone who questions spirituality and belief in what is.
Remarkable Talent.......2007-07-12
I am amazed at this young girl's work. What a talent! And she is using it for God--which makes it even better. I would highly recommend this book.
Book Description
One of photography's watershed moments occurred in 1965, when the cover of Life magazine featured Lennart Nilsson's photograph of a living human embryothe first time life at such an early stage had been captured on film. His classic bestseller A Child Is Born featured stunning photographs of life in the womb and earned him the sobriquet The da Vinci of medical photography (Chicago Tribune). Now, in this major work, Nilsson's extraordinary images encompass a full human lifespan.
Using the world's most exacting equipment, Nilsson reveals the interior form of the entire human body and its intricate workings as never seen before, in a book that is as stunning to behold as its contents. Featuring thoughtful essays by both a noted scientist and a renowned editor, LIFE shines a penetrating light on all of life's fundamentals.

Incredible Images.......2007-09-26
The pictures in this book are an amazing insight into our own bodies. The quality of the photographs is incredible and provided me a greater appreciation of the miracle that human bodies are.
the book "Life".......2007-08-26
I have never seen such unbelievable pictures. It is so hard to believe that a tiny camera can take pictures inside the womb. The pictures show the true miracle of life.
So AMAZING!!.......2007-07-05
I love this book. I bought it for my brother and sister-in-law who were expecting, and it was amazing for them to be able to see what the thing growing inside her looked like a little bit.
Life.......2007-05-14
A vividly beautiful photo journey of reproduction. Thank you for this artistic evidence of life.
Fasinating.......2007-05-09
This is an absolutely beautiful book! I was looking for pictures for our Children's Ministry regarding Life in the Womb and this book has been an awesome answer to my search. The vivid colors and details - It has so much more than what I expected.
Book Description
The first in-depth biographical study of the brilliant but elusive architect who fundamentally redefined twentieth-century architecture.
Now ranked with Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe, Louis I. Kahn brought a reverence for history back into modern architecture while translating it into a uniquely contemporary idiom. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with colleagues, coworkers, clients, and family membersand illustrated with many previously unpublished photographsthis book documents the uniquely American rise of a poor immigrant to the pinnacle of the international architectural world. It illuminates the richly diverse personal relationships Kahn had with such clients as Jonas Salk and Paul Mellon, and the romantic entanglements that mystified even those closest to him. While celebrating the genius of Kahn's art, the book provides an invaluable portrait of the man who created it. 200 color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended for any college-level collection concentrating on architectural history........2007-08-09
The biography of architect Louis I. Kahn, whose work is now ranked with Frank Lloyd Wright and other notables, represents the first in-depth survey of an architect whose works redefined 20th century architecture, and uses over a hundred interviews with colleagues, clients and family members to reveal Kahn's life, influences, and his sudden emergence as a notable architect. Illustrated with many previously unpublished photos documenting the rise of this poor immigrant, and including extensive family documents from archives, LOUIS I. KAHN: BEYOND TIME AND STYLE surveys his personal relationships, clients, and the extent of his genius. Highly recommended for any college-level collection concentrating on architectural history.

A Brilliant Architect Newly Appreciated.......2007-05-16
Everyone knows that books can be turned into movies. Less frequently are buildings turned into movies, but that was part of the appeal of the unique 2003 documentary _My Architect_ by Nathaniel Kahn, about his architect father Louis I. Kahn, whom the son did not know well except through his buildings. The film was an introduction for many people to Kahn's architectural work, but other architects had held Kahn in high esteem. The film showed why, and now Carter Wiseman, an architecture critic and teacher, has written an accessible and handsome biography, _Louis I. Kahn: Beyond Time and Style: A Life in Architecture_ (Norton). The documentary excited the curiosity of many who will now want to look at Kahn's life and works in more detail, and while Wiseman's book does not have the personal quest of the film, it does an exceptional job of explaining the life of an enigmatic figure whose importance in architecture is, over thirty years after his death, increasingly well appreciated. Many rank Kahn as second in importance to twentieth century architecture only to Frank Lloyd Wright himself.
Kahn came with his family from 1901 in Russian-controlled Estonia, moving to Philadelphia in 1906 when he was five. He quickly showed skill in drawing, and got into a public art school for talented youths, then to the University of Pennsylvania to study architecture. In 1930 he married Esther Israeli, a scholar pursuing her masters in psychology. They would remain supportively married for 44 years until his death, but he had many affairs and children by two other women by whom he had children (one of whom was the documentary filmmaker Nathaniel) and with whom he maintained a type of family life. The problem in his relationships was not that he was promiscuous, but that his devotions were simply not marital; his widow said that "his first love was architecture and everything else came second." Like so many other artists with peculiar private lives, however, he is best judged simply on his art. That art is surprising and humane. Wiseman's book has scores of photographs of Kahn's most important works. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, has a gorgeous courtyard encompassing a view of the Pacific, flanked by study towers for the researchers, each of which has a view of the ocean. The Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is an astonishing huge crystal of cubes and cylinders that emerges from a moat, with an interior of Piranesi-style complexity that obliges members of parliament to interact with staffs and public. The Phillips Exeter Academy Library is ostensibly a solid masonry cube on the outside, but with huge circular concrete facades inside, a celebration of circular and cubic geometry that allows a public space with vantages for anyone to see what others are doing in the building.
What is wonderful about one building after another is that the brutalism associated with massive poured concrete is lightened and humanized; these are sensitive, even poetic, works, with none of the oppressiveness of modernism. Wiseman quotes David Rinehart, Kahn's friend and fellow architect: "For Lou, every building was a temple. Salk was a temple for science. Dhaka was a temple for government. Exeter was a temple for learning." Kahn may have been Jewish, but he was never observant of religious custom. His buildings, however, show an intense spirituality; viewing even pictures of them, it is easy to understand how people entering them have feelings of awe as if they are entering cathedrals. Wiseman's portrait of the man and the buildings is a welcome tribute to a twentieth century master.
A superb study of a master architect.......2007-04-04
This book far exceeded my expectations. I am generally not a fan of Wiseman's writings, as in the past he has judged my own mentor (a figure treated more positively in this book too) very harshly. Neither here nor there, other than to say I was skeptical about this book when I picked it up.
But I have to admit it's great. Wiseman's biography of one of America's greatest architects is balanced, entertaining, and packed with astute judgments. Louis Kahn had a convoluted family life (maintaining several families at once, hidden from each other), and even his professional relationships were unusual in their combination of intimacy and distance. Wiseman brings Kahn's architectural accomplishment to life in the context of this personal complexity.
The book is well illustrated and the photographs support Wiseman's discussion - Kahn's development of a new architectural language beyond International Style modernism. And Wiseman is excellent in describing the importance of Kahn's role as an educator. This book is a great introduction to a figure of towering accomplishment, and if Wiseman does not capture all the complexity of such an enigmatic figure, he is as close as anyone has come in writing.

An intimate photographic journey through Edward Gorey's home.
Customer Reviews:
A home filled with curiosities and wonders........2007-08-09
This is a beautiful book of photographs and text that allows the reader an intriguing view of the home in which Edward Gorey lived and the collections of curious objects, books, and cats he filled it with.
The photographs are large and beautiful - haunting even - and there are lots of them. There is just the right amount of text to cast some light on the man behind the house and his elusive character - anecdotes about his life, his work, his friends and the things that inspired him.
If you are fan of Edward Gorey, or of eclectic interior decorating and design, and displaying collections of antiques, this book will be a treasure in your library.
Amazing.......2007-04-10
That's really all I can say. I have been waiting for this book for a long time, and it was the most incredible thing. Amazing photos. Read up on Gorey first, though. The details are some much better when you get the little visual jokes Gorey set up in his day-to-day life.
Inside Edward Gorey's house..........2006-02-01
If you are an Ogdred Weary fan...this is a truly wonderful book. Photographs of the exterior (peeling paint and kind of saggy porch) and the interior rooms of the house on Cape Cod in Gorey lived and worked, along with his cats and figbashes, piles of thousands of books, assorted rocks and oddish things, and the expected miriad of curiosities. Alas, or delightfully...just the environment one would expect of the eccentric Edward. A cabinet of curiosities...a delight!
Not MUST HAVE, but definitely NICE to have.......2005-09-10
This book wouldn't mean much to anyone who isn't already a Gorey fan. I own (and love) the compilations 'Amphigorey', 'Amphigorey Too' & 'Amphogorey Also', so have a head start. I also have the auto(?) biography 'Ascending Peculiarity', which is almost a necessary co-requisite to this book - it helps explain the cats, and many other Gorey details. Now that the individual books are available again, I'm tempted to get them too, because they are such nice objects - but only if the kids promise to share with me!
A specialty item for the true Gorey collector.......2004-04-05
Even dedicated fans of Edward Gorey will probably know very little about his personal life: he was an enigmatic recluse and few were permitted past his front door. Photographer Kevin McDermott's Elephant House will delight students of architecture and photography, providing rich duotone works of Gorey's intriguing home and its contents. A specialty item for the true Gorey collector, Elephant House is an impressive photographic showcase and a welcome addition to both architectural studies and photographic studies reference collections.

Life 2008 Diary (2008 Desk Diary)
ASIN: 3822839949 |
Book Description
Planet earth, home sweet home
In the year 2000, world-renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting set out on a personal journey to photograph the evolution of life on earth. He made pilgrimages to true time capsules like a remote lagoon in Western Australia, spent time in research collections photographing forms of microscopic life, and even found ways to create visual parallels between the growth of organs in the human body and the patterns seen on the surface of the earth. The resulting volume is a glorious picture book of planet earth depicting the amazing biodiversity that surrounds us all. Lanting's true gift lies beyond his technical mastery: it is his eye for geometry in the beautiful chaos of nature that allows him to show us the world as it has never been seen before. From crabs to jellyfish, diatoms to vast geological formations, jungles to flowers, monkeys to human embryos, LIFE is a testament to the magical beauty of life in all its forms and is Lanting's most remarkable achievement to date.
Customer Reviews:
An amazing book!.......2007-06-08
If you are not familiar with Franz Lanting's work this is an amazing first book to buy. It is full of stunning photos of a close approximation of the earth as it once was.
As has been said it makes a great coffee table book but is also a great addition to any library. For all the nature and photography enthusiasts out there, here is a great intro!
Lanting impresses again!.......2007-05-17
This is a wonderful book! The photographs are simply stunning and the layout of the book is great. This is an excellent sample of Lanting's work.
High impact book, but..........2007-05-13
Definately an impressive volume. Big, bold and generally with superb pictures. Also a nice concept book- the pursuit of time and change through photos of life and its diversity. However, for a book of this production quality (and it's very high), I was surprised with the number and degree of colour enhanced images and the lack of interpretation - either of the subjects (and their relationship to the theme of time) or of the technical aspects of the photography and the story behind the photographs (for the photo nerds amongst us!). To be fair, Lanting does provide single paragraph descriptions for each photo, but these seem like an after thought enforced by the publisher. Maybe writing is not Lanting's thing, pity, because his photography is impressive. Alternatively, I might have bought the wrong type of book: If you want something visually stunning to leave open on the coffee table, then buy it- it was a better deal than that offered by shops here in NZ!

This is one of if not the most beautiful book of nature photographs I have ever seen.
Best nature photos I have ever seen.......1998-10-22
All photos are done in the field---No staged photos. The patience required to obtain these photographs is hard to believe. This book has the finest nature photos I have ever seen.
Breathtaking photography.......1998-05-21
Not only were the images beautiful, the descriptions and articles on the photographs were very informative. As a nature lover and artist this is a book that I would recomend having for reference
Book Description
The love story unfolds through Maars striking photographs of Picasso and their brilliant friends, most of them artists and writers; in his famous weeping woman portraits of her; and in Mary Ann Caws revealing text. The book is an enthralling revelation of the lives of a wholly exceptional circle of friends.
Customer Reviews:
More than just an inspiration for the art of another .......2006-05-01
Dora Maar was according to most observers the woman in Picasso's life , closest to being at his own level of artistic perception and understanding. As this volume makes clear she was an outstanding photographer . The story of her relationship with Picasso, the part she played as inspiration and model for his work, her special role in regard to Guernica, her being the weeping woman of the famous painting, his abandoning her when he sensed ( or so he claimed) her impending madness, her passionate clinging to his memory, her breakdown, her turning to a reclusive life and one of deep religious devotion- are all presented in this excellent and clearly written volume.
There are also representations of much of her work, and of Picasso's in which she is subject.
Maar was clearly a considerable personality and artist in her own right, and not simply the inspiration for another.
Beautiful and insightful book........2003-04-11
This is a wonderful book, full of beautiful b/w images of dora, her photography/art and Picasso's work of her and more! It is really worth getting for your book collection, especially at this price, and it gives you an insight to Dora's life, I think she is fascinating woman living in a time when most photographer's were men. She is truely a pioneer and deserves more credit than being known as Picasso's muse. Very inspiring book.
Historical collections.......2003-03-05
Of some of Dora's photographs, and self portraits are a must have for any Dora fan. It shows her in her later years, it shows her paintings, it goes into detail about her love affair with Picasso as well. This is easily my favorite Dora book.
Dora mysterious, dramatic, definitely not only weeping.......2001-11-09
I would recommend this book to everybody. I am so delighted I purchased this book. It includes everything you need to know about Dora - her personal life before, during and after Picasso. I have always been interested in Picasso and by studying his life, I noticed all the fascinating women in his life. In my opinion, Dora was the one who made a big difference and who had a huge influence on him. Although it was Francoise Gilot, another woman in Picasso's life who gave him two children. Dora's own career and life as an artist (photographer, model, painter) is described in this book from the time she moved to Paris and tried to establish herself as a photographer.
You will not only find Picasso's portraits and drawings of Dora but Dora's own work (a lot of black & white photos taken by her that remind me of Man Ray's work). She truly was a talented artist. This is not often mentioned. Most of the people saw her mainly as Picasso's model and Muse. Dora was a very complex person full of emotions. She could be very dramatic in the way she looked and dressed. This all is revealed in this book. As I said, it has it all: Dora as a private person (Theodora M.) and Dora as an artist, the famous and remarkable Dora Maar. Trust me, with this book, you will get all the information you need. I consider this book a piece of art.
Insightful.......2001-01-08
Picasso's Weeping Woman: The Life and Art of Dora Maar
I am grateful for this book. It is insightful but not definitive. It is not an in depth biography of Dora Maar. A better perception of the psyche of Dora Maar is contained in James Lord's personal memoir "Picasso and Dora". And a better understanding of the cruelty of Picasso is presented in Arianna S. Huffington's "Picasso: Creator and Destroyer". Both I think are necessary to truly appreciate this book as I do.
Since Dora Maar's death in 1997, little has yet been published of her work. She is primarily known as one of the mistresses of Picasso but there was a world of complexity to this woman. She was deeply involved with the surrealists before she ever met Picasso. She knew them all, Breton, Tanguy, Man Ray, Hugnet, Crevel. She was a noted photographer, an exhibited painter, a poet and Picasso's muse and inspiration for seven stormy years culminating in a breakdown that left her a changed woman, a recluse and a religious devotee.
Mary Ann Caws book presents a dazzling panorama of works by both Dora Maar and Picasso including some wonderful comparative paintings of both artists. Dora Maar assisted and photographically chronicled Picasso as he created his masterpiece Guernica. That chronicle is beautifully presented in Caws book.
This book is an easy read with gorgeous reproductions of photographs, painting, sculpture, and poetry throughout not only from Dora Maar but also from Paul Eluard, André du Bouchet and others. It is a great visual companion piece to books on Picasso's works, photography and surrealism. It will occupy that regrettably tiny portion of my bookshelf devoted to Dora Maar. Thank you Mary Ann Caws for this delightful book

Book Description
Long before their supporting role in Sex and the City, Manolo Blahnik's shoes were legendaryexquisitely detailed, unabashedly luxurious, and impossibly sexy. The epitome of sophistication and taste, they have graced the feet of royalty, supermodels, and movie stars. In these breathtaking pictures by Blahnik's longtime friend, photographer Eric Boman, the shoes take center stage in a dazzling array of intriguing and often lighthearted scenes and settings. A white leather stiletto plays an incriminating role in a suggested crime worthy of Hitchcock. A pale green mule nestles among ferns in homage to Blahnik's recurring botanical themes. The straps of a sandal echo the strands of spaghetti in which it lays entwined. Boman's unerring eye and oddly keen understanding of Blahnik's creations make for spellbinding pictures, full of wit, playfulness, and sole. Elegant allusions to Blahnik's eclectic influences aboundfrom the cinema to history, from the natural world to art and literature. As covetable as a pair of Manolos, this is a book of consummate creativity, addictive power, and unrivaled individuality: a cult object on a cult designer.

Blahnik by Boman.......2006-07-18
I just happened to be in Selfridges/London last year, coinciding with Eric Boman and Manolo Blahnik's book launch. There were queues and queues of eager fans lining up to get their newly purchased books autographed by the fashionable duo. It was all very civilised, even though security guards were holding back the frenzied mob, while Boman and Blahnik relentlessly signed with tireless good humour and charm.
Blahnik has been the ultimate cobbler to the stars since the Seventies, and Boman is a veteran, top photographer who's been photographing beautiful women for years (his most recent book, "Dames" show-cases his portrait-photogaphy). It's fortunate for Manolo that Eric came up with the novel idea of photographing his old friend's shoes. It was also conducive for the book that he supplied the witty 'photographic conversation,' for although Manolo's shoes are the most exquisite in the world, a book would have been pretty one dimensional with pedestrian sole snap-shots of his pumps without Eric's creative input.
Boman has not only managed to produce imaginative photographs of the beautiful shoes, but has elevated Manolo's footwear to museum status. Thanks to his original and highly imaginative photographic compositions, the elegant pumps have been transformed into classical portraits.
Boman and Blahnik's old friend Paloma Picasso has supplied the foreword, helping make this beautifully produced book a must have gift, especially for people with tasteful shoe fetishes and aficionados of superior glossy art books, the kind which are too exquisite to grace coffee tables.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!.......2006-02-24
The genius design combined with amazing photography and styling make for a journey of beauty.A must have for the collector of fashion and photgraphy books.
Good creation to show you Manolo Blahnik shoe art........2006-01-17
I am a photographer and also a high heels collector. There is a project in my mind since one year ago, I want to creat a book to present the art of high heel design, just like this book. I have many ideals. However when I saw this book, I think I need new ideals, or my friend will think that my work is just a copy.
I will rate 4 to 4.5 stars to this book.
shoes...no odor.......2005-12-24

Wacky, Wonderful, Weird World!.......2005-12-23
I have a huge collection of fashion books - both artistic and historical. A friend just gave this to me for our holiday gift-exchange at work, and I am absolutely overwhelmed!
The images are completely striking - strange, beautiful, odd, a little disturbing, and usually quite witty. Some have made me laugh out loud, while others send a chill down my spine.
Of course, Blahnik's shoes speak from themselves as works of art, however the way that Boman has juxtaposed them will the different set-ups or mise-en-scene is truly wonderful. If only we could have such still lifes in the odd spaces of our homes! This book will be a great addition for any fashionista/art lover, and will be the most talked-about *objet* at your next gathering...ENJOY!!!
