Book Description
With the advent of digital video cameras, anyone can shoot and produce a video for very little money -- in fact, hundreds of thousands of people are doing so. When video photographers look for guidance, they don't want to read a big book cover to cover -- they want help on their particular problem immediately.
This compendium of solutions is designed to allow anyone to dig into each problem category and quickly find the necessary guidance. Each solution is 2-5 pages in length, most with at least one photo or diagram illustrating the situation. With the help of this book, even a complete neophyte can take advantage of Chuck Gloman’s 22 years in the video trenches and use hard-earned trade secrets to make their videos look professional.

Disappointing.......2007-07-23
This book gets one star because it does have some useful practical tips. T. Leitner's review has already said much of what I wanted to say in regards to this bloated work. As mentioned, its full of anecdotes that serve as filler rather than helpful information. What's worse is that its not even entertaining prose but nonsense like this, on working with models, "This woman was God's gift to earth. She had the kind of beauty that few have been blessed with, and when you looked up beautiful in the dictionary, her picture was there. And to make matters even more uncomfortable, she was wearing some exotic perfume that would turn a mortal's brains into dust."
This book does not live up to its promises. Patrick Sherman's review was also right on.
Good practical tips.......2006-12-01
I initially saw this book on Amazon and saw that people recommended the book "DV Filmmaking From Start to Finish" by Ian David Aronson. Well, I purchased that book and still haven't read it through. I have, however, just finished reading 303 Filmmaking Solutions which I found much more interesting.
It's true that not all of the "solutions" are actually solutions, but that aside, it's very interesting to read the various obstacles that the author comes across and his method for overcoming them. That alone is worthwhile knowledge to have, regardless of whether your situations are similar or completely different. At least you come away from the book with some ideas for solutions.
I found the book did bog down a bit in the lighting section. While it was all worthwhile knowledge, I think the lighting section could've been more dispersed throughout the book, rather than in one long section (if you intend to read the book from cover to cover).
The only other issue is the author's sense of humour made me cringe the whole way through. There were about 4 remarks I found funny, the rest were painful. An excerpt:
"Therefore a video frame is made up of odd and even fields (no relation to Sally Fields)"
Aside from that, I'd certainly recommend the book to upcoming filmmakers.
Not much.......2005-09-08
303 ways to shoot anything basically. Such as how to shoot a birthday, how to shoot a girls birthday, how to shoot a birthday on saturday.. you get the idea..
self-important.......2005-03-15
I don't understand why this book has the ratings of the other reviews here. It is a big disappointment. While this book has some interesting tips between the lines (that's why I give it 2 stars instead of one), it is merely a rambling of a self-important producer. The 303 "solutions" are at best 303 anecdotal stories. Take solution #96 "How to Shoot in a Boat" for example, it reads, in its entirety "I always seem to get the jobs of shooting from some kind of moving vehicle. You've read my exploits in the air and on the ground, but what about in the water? Shooting footage from a boat is a skill that someday I will master. Not wanting to delve into jet skis, Ski-Dos, or speedboats, I will be discussing motorboats and sailboats." Great solution Chuck! That really makes my filming much better. Perhaps it would be possible to cut down this book into 99 tips and solutions, but in the style its been written it would still be painful to read and extract useful information. Furthermore, the cover says, "solve any video or edit problem in 10 minutes or less". Not only is that untrue but also shows how silly this book is. The picture of a consumer DV camera also has nothing to do with the content, because Chuck uses big professional equipment throughout this book, stuff that takes more than 10 minutes to just unpack by the way. I haven't found a good book to suggest as an alternative yet, but don't waste your money on this one. Try any other.
303 experiences.......2005-02-25
This book is a good book for references and is not a book on making a movie per se, but it still has some valuable information that I would have never learned from my teacher at my local college. He show you a lot of different solutions for certain situations which is really good, but a lot of the solutions have to do with lighting which is good but at the same time it leaves you wanting more of the non-lighting solutions. But what really caused me to give this book a four-star is that all his solutions are examples of his past jobs, which is the principle reason to make this book and is a good thing(to learn from his experiences) but, he digresses from the teaching of the solution to further educate you on irrelevant info. He also has a humorous approach to the solutions which was really a plus. Overall this book is good as a reference if you can get past the irrelevant stuff, but other than that, like I said, it is a good book.

Great Book for Learning All About Windows Media Player 10.......2005-03-20
This book is exactly what I was looking for. I am going to do a program in my Computer User Group on Windows Media Player 10. I am not an expert, so I needed to learn as much as I can as quickly as possible about this subject. This book is thorough and written in a way that makes this material interesting and entertaining. As Paul says in his book: "Windows XP makes its treasure-trove of functionality easy to discover, but a lot of the really dazzling stuff is still buried and unobvious." This book makes it obvious. Thank-you for writing this book.

Essential Companion to iMovie3.......2003-07-29
As Erica says "iMovie can do a lot more than you might ever expect from a free product" Having spent a lifetime editing film and then video by the traditional methods I found computer editing with iMovie both a revelation and a revolution. You can use it as an easy way to put together family and holiday videos but as this book shows it has hidden power to allow you to make high quality productions.
Written in a clear and authoritative but friendly style it provides step by step guides to accomplish a wide range of visual and audio effects. The author comes up with a set of solutions based on her own practical experience. This is a hands on book written by someone who enjoys the challenge of pushing iMovie to the limits.
You can read it cover to cover and be impressed by the attractive layout and use of colour but keep it within reach of the Mac ready to provide the answer for any new effect you want to create not only with iMovie but also with Quicktime. As a generous extra there is a disc full of plug ins and other helpful software - some of it written specially by the author and not available elsewhere.
Erica's first book about iMovie helped me rescue a major project which had refused to open from the hard disc and the this one has a wealth of new material on how to exploit the added features in iMovie 3 and solve some of the issues it raises. If you use the software this book is essential to fully exploit iMovie 3
More of the same...and that's a good thing!.......2003-07-17
In iMovie 2 Solutions, Erica Sadun gave us cool tricks with low (or no) cost additions to iMovie 2. Now iMovie 3 is out and the tips from the iMovie 2 book are....still working. Some of the same tricks show up in this new book, but that is expected with a program like iMovie. As I said about iMovie 2 Solutions, if you're looking for a basic iMovie how-to book, look elsewhere. That's not what this book is for. This book is going to show you how to use iMovie 3 and a few mostly inexpensive pieces of software to do the kinds of tricks that you would spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for high end DV movie editing software packages. The high end software might do it easier and maybe faster, but the learning curve, not to mention the cost, is so much higher. The new tricks are well worth the cost of this book. Ms Sadun writes very well. Clear and consise without talking down to her intended audience. All the tricks are laid out step by step, with examples shown not only in the book, but also on the very useful companion DVD. The software included on the DVD is also a nice bonus. If you're really brave, you can make your own iMovie plugins! Many very useful plugins are included to get you started, but this will whet your appitite for the huge assortment of practical (and some not so practical, but fun) world of iMovie plugins. Hit the search engine of your choice and type in "iMovie Plugins". OK, what software will you need to do these tricks? A graphics program like Adobe Photoshop Elements for less than 80 bucks (although you could also use any decent graphics program), and Apple's very own QuickTime Pro (the free regular QuickTime will not do) for [a few] measly bucks. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to go beyond iMovie's feature set without spending a fortune.

Customer Reviews:
For video?.......2006-04-05
First of all I kind of expect a touch of sense in graphics and layout when the book treats the subject Photoshop. The interface reminds me of a Spanish course book I had in 8th grade wich also made me puke.
This book treats video in as many pages as I have fingers.
The book is for them who never seen Photoshop before.
I feel cheated. Erik Eliason
Don't bother.......2006-01-18
With the tons of Photoshop books out there is one should be at the bottom of the list or not on the list at all. Being a veteran photoshop user and having bought quite a few PS books in the past this one is the worst I've come across. I bought this thinking it would cover information for using PS for video that other books hadn't covered. Not only was the information in this book incredibly basic it was also very hard to read.

Great reference tool!.......2004-11-19
A great reference tool that's much more informative and instructional than the documentation in Apple's DVDSP manual. When I want to learn how to do something in DVDSP 2.0 this book is the first reference tool I pick up, and I've rarely had to look elsewhere. Apple ought to have Erica write their tech manual on version 3.0!

Final Cut Express Solutions.......2004-06-20
I had been using iMovie for about three years and started feeling that I had pretty much mastered it. Not that my movies were going to win any Oscars, but rather, my creativity was limited by what iMovie would allow me to do.
Apple must have heard me grumbling about iMovie and must have known I couldn't afford Final Cut Pro, so they created Final Cut Express. When I finally received this software, I realized I was over my head; I didn't even know how to begin using it. My solution was getting the book "Final Cut Express Solutions" by Jason Cranford Teague and David Teague.
One of my initial observations was the full-color pages throughout the book. Most software books are black and white and boring. I found myself looking forward to the next chapter because each chapter builds on previous chapters. As I progressed through the book, I used the project files and clips provided on the Companion DVD to help me learn each chapter.
The first chapter, "The Hardware Setup," was very informative. The authors take the time to advise what hardware is important to the success of your editing in Final Cut Express. Since then, I've purchased additional memory (I now have 768 MB SDRAM) and a 160 GB external FireWire hard disk for my iMac.
Audio is an area I need the most training with. Chapter 8 "Adding Audio," gives me exactly what I need to be able to fully utilize all the audio control Final Cut Express has to offer. I learned about room tone and world tone; recorded silence in interior and exterior areas respectively.
Titles! I was so limited with iMovie titles, that all my movies had the same look. Chapter 9 "Adding Titles and Finishing Up," offers a wealth of titling options. The authors even provided a section on "Creating Final Cut Express Titles in Photoshop."
A very unique and very powerful tool the authors use is the "Movie Night!" feature. At the end of each chapter (except Chapter 10), you'll find a purple box that highlights a movie where the authors talk about some unique editing features of that particular movie. What's really cool is how the authors use each movie to further discuss that chapters' topic. For example, in Chapter 9 "Adding Titles and Finishing Up," the authors explain how Alfred Hitchcock used a title sequence to capture the audience at the beginning of the movie "Vertigo."
I'm not a Final Cut Express expert yet, but with the guidance found in "Final Cut Express Solutions," I find my movie making abilities far beyond what I was doing with iMovie. The authors say it best, "That is what you will get out of this book: a thorough understanding of what it takes to get a movie made." If you have Final Cut Express, get this book. If you don't have Final Cut Express yet, get it soon, then get this book.
Not Enough..........2004-03-08
After completing several projects using various versions of iMovie, I've recently made the switch to Final Cut Express to increase my editing capabilities.
I'm disappointed in this book, which was offered for $40 at the Apple store when buying the Final Cut Express software.
The text lacks in-depth information about FCE's video and audio filters, and fails to adequately cover the software basics. The authors' suggest their own website for more information, but there's nothing on it.
I'm going to try Tom Wolsky's book and hope for a better guide.
Final Cut Express Solutions review.......2003-10-29
Before you read Final Cut Express Solutions or invest in the Final Cut Express software, it's important to realize that Final Cut Express is not for everyone. Some people are quite happy with iMovie. And yet others want more latitude in their creativity. Final Cut Express does just that and Final Cut Express Solutions will show you how.
Personally, I find Final Cut Express to be intimidating. It's not as novice friendly as iMovie, but that's the price you pay when you get more creative options. Final Cut Express Solutions does a great job of walking you through the process of creating your own movie. The book has a nice flow to it; it doesn't just jump in with all the neat stuff you can do with footage. Final Cut Express Solutions tells you exactly what the steps are in creating a movie and explains what you're seeing, right from the very first time you open Final Cut Express.
The book uses a combination of text and screen shots to guide you through the various features of Final Cut Express. I find screen captures to be an absolute must in any software tutorial. And this book is heavy on screen captures, pretty much one for every command or feature that is being shown. There is also a CD-ROM that accompanies the Final Cut Express Solutions text, which provides project footage to show what the various features of Final Cut Express can do. You can even edit the footage for practice. In fact, the book refers to the footage as it shows you various features. I would recommend using the CD-ROM along with the book as indicated in the text of Final Cut Express Solutions.
Final Cut Express Solutions is organized extremely well and serves as a quick reference for various functions of creating a movie. Chapters follow a roughly chronological order in the process of making a movie, focusing on topics such as importing footage, editing, audio, and many more.
One requirement that is spelled out right from the start is that you'll need QuickTime Pro. You can buy QuickTime Pro directly from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime) for $29.99. Final Cut Express works seamlessly with QuickTime Pro and is necessary for some of the topics that the book covers.
This is the only Final Cut Express guide I have reviewed, but I have reviewed one other Sybex book, iMovie 3 Solutions, an excellent book. Final Cut Express Solutions follows an identical format and feel and is also an excellent book.
Final Cut Express is not a book that you will read and then just put away on the shelf. It is an excellent reference book that you will need frequently as you delve more into the advanced features of Final Cut Express.

Don't expect an iMovie how to.......2003-02-23
As always, begin at the beginning. If you're looking for an iMovie manual, there are plenty of other authors to choose from. That is NOT what this book is about. Ms Sadun has written a book that borders on heresy. How to take a free program and make a movie that does the types of things only previously available for programs costing hundreds (and thousands) of dollars. What do you need? QuickTime Pro (30 bucks), and Adobe Photoshop Elements (Less than 80 bucks if you shop carefully). Almost any effect you can think of is covered by this book. It really is that good. Granted, doing the same thing with higher end (and much more expensive) video editing software is less complicated and probably takes less time, but the point of the exercize is not always the destination, but the journey (How Zen!). Let's face it, if you're a video professional, you already have the latest from Avid, or Apple, or something like that. If you're editing your son's birthday or a friends wedding, this book is a must have!
Chris Seibold MyMac.com Book Review.......2002-10-24
Say you make a fairly great movie with the worlds greatest program: iMovie. Still, you think your newly birthed video masterpiece lacks something. Perhaps it's a unique blend or a splashy title. At the moment of export you might stop and wonder: "Should I upgrade to Final Cut Pro?" I can answer that question for you, just follow the following formula: (Money you plan to earn from this movie)+(Money you plan to earn with next 10 movies)/(cost of Final Cut Pro)=Justification. If "justification" is greater than 1, I say buy the program. If not it is far wiser, fiscally speaking, to stick with iMovie.
Does that mean you're stuck? Have you reached the absolute limits of iMovie? Are you forever wondering in a morass of lifeless titling and yearnings for a few special effects? Heck no, if you're willing to mess around with a couple other programs for a bit. Of course saying you're not stuck and showing you how to unstick yourself are two different things. So, you'll have to trust me, you're not stuck. That tidbit should be worth a nickel. To actually get unstuck you'll have to pony up $40.00 for iMovie 2 Solutions . With this handy offering by Erica Sadun you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how much you can get out of iMovie if don't mind mixing in a few other apps.
iMovie 2 Solutions is not really so much about iMovie, it's more about extending iMovie with the careful use of a few programs. That is not to say iMovie 2 Solutions doesn't have iMovie specific info, it does in spades (want to change the default "My Great Movie Title"? See page 4). Most of the iMovie specific tips are redundant or of little value. The value lies in combining iMovie with programs such as QuicktimePro, Adobe Photoshop Elements (nee Photoshop LE, I suspect if you have a copy of Photoshop LE most of the tricks will still work) and a few other assorted programs. It might seem strange to buy a book ostensibly about iMovie that focuses so heavily on other programs. Trust me again when I say it's money well spent as long as you realize iMovie 2 Solutions is in no way an iMovie tutorial or reference but indispensable if you want to trick out your movies to the maximum level of Jurassic Parkness..
By now the interested reader will begin wondering: "Just what kind of stuff will this book show me how to do?" I can't list all the tricks iMovie 2 Solutions covers (that's a lie, I could actually list all the tricks, but this is a review not an index) but I can point out a few that seemed particularly cool to me. Ones I particularly include: the "Big Titles" trick, See through Big Title trick, Movie in Movie trick and customized QuickTime skin playback tip. and, my uber fave, use iMovie to work on a silver screen sized movie instead of the default TV sized screen (a tip worth $999 clams for those who posses nice cameras but not Final Cut Pro). The aforementioned tips just scratch the surface of iMovie 2 Solutions there is plenty more movie making goodness contained within the wraparound softcover.
So we have established the book contains useful tips and/or tricks. Hence it's time to get down to style and presentation. After all, the world's most clever tip isn't worth much if it is presented in an obscure incomprehensible format. This is not a problem with iMovie 2 Solutions. The tips are presented in easy to follow steps illustrated with small thumbnail sized photos. The average number of steps seems to be about ten but range up to a still manageable twenty actions to get the desired effect. The writing is fairly comprehensible providing you know a bit about iMovie a little about Photoshop and a smidgen of QuicktimePro. If you don't know much about those programs I strongly suggest you read the book from the very beginning, it makes the going much easier.
iMovie 2 Solutions also comes with a super nifty CD that contains every program the author asks you to use to augment iMovie and a visual tutorial of each chapter. If you're on a 56k connection the 40-dollar price tag is worth the disc alone. If you're a Mac user from way back the disc is reminiscent of the floppies that came with the earliest Mac Bibles. By that I mean the disc is chock full of nifty utilities and such. You can have plenty of fun with the stuff on the disc without bothering to read the book.
Summation time: This book shows you plenty of stuff you never thought you could with iMovie at a reasonable price and gives you the tools to follow through.

Step beyond the beginner's guides.......2002-08-24
This book covers so many useful tricks that every iMovie owner should invest in it. Owning Quicktime Pro is essential for many of the tricks - as is paint program - but it's money well spent. Everything from picture-in-picture effects to professional-style cuts and edits are covered in extremely well illustrated step-by-step guides. Of course there are some very cheesy effects that no-one should use in anything other than an ironic style, but there are also essentials such as J and L edits, better titles, overlays.. This book can help postpone the time you need to step up to Final Cut Pro - so effectively you're saving yourself $ ;-)
Great Book!.......2002-07-18
The format of the book does an excellent job of separating the "you can do this ... " stuff from "Here's HOW to do this ... " stuff; something far too few manuals handle well. After a tiny bit of off-line coaching from Sadun (who was very helpful and courteous), I had no difficulty stacking a video clip inside a clip inside another clip, and learned more about QuickTime than I'd ever known before. I found that it is not for a complete novice; the book has some hidden assumptions about the reader's proficiency, mainly that the reader is more proficient than a rank beginner and can leap into the process. All things considered, I am more than satisfied with my purchase!
Promotes other software products.......2002-07-09
I understand that this is a tips and tricks book, not a user manual, but I was disappointed by the frequent referals to other software packages like Final Cut Pro, Quicktime Pro and other products. Tell me what I can and can't do with the product I already own!
The manual could do a much better job covering the basics.
The novice iMovie and iDVD user is faced with understanding where one product leaves off and the other begins. To an experienced user, this may be obvious, but for me, at least, it took a long time to figure out that something as simple as chapter buttons are are not available through either product. (The iMac help desk expalined this to me).
If you're a sophisticated user, I suppose this book has some cool ideas. As a novice, I'm very disappointed.
