Product Description
Within the pages of this dazzling book, readers will find 20 of the most significant new homes designed by Bassenian/Lagoni Architects of Newport Beach, California. Inspired by the architecture of Southern Europe, yet totally new, these graceful, time-tempered homes display up-to-date floor planning, the finest amenities and picturesque landscaping. Built in the canyons and along the coasts of California, as well as in the deserts of Nevada, theses homes echo the architectural forms, textures and motifs of structures built in the hill towns of Tuscany and the plains of Andalusia. The homes range from stunning Tuscan courtyard homes in Rancho Santa Fe to a trio of walled and tiled Spanish/Andalusian designs in Irvine to an amazingly versatile family-recreation hacienda in Las Vegas. Each home is depicted by glorious color photographs, both inside and out, as well as a detailed site plan and colored floor plan with furniture in place. A special section for each major project entitled Its In The Details gives readers a close-up view of the architectural design and building details that make these homes extraordinary. A very helpful Annotated Projects List at the back of the book provides a complete listing of the builders, structural engineers, landscape architects and interior designers who contributed to each project. Also included in the book is a Forward by A. David Kovach, a distinguished housing marketer and design commentator, as well as an Introduction by Aram Bassenian, AIA and Carl Lagoni, AIA, Chairman/CEO and President, respectively, of Bassenian/Lagoni Architects. For consumers, this inspiring and well-crafted collection will serve as a valuable resource of ideas for design, landscaping and interiors created in the Old World style, but with a fresh California twist. For professionals and students, this remarkable book will provide examples of innovative floor planning, adept use of forms and materials and execution of a comprehensive design vision that has become the hallmark of Bassenian/Lagoni Architects.

Impressive, but . . .just a bit too "sterile".......2007-09-20
I must admit, their use of natural stone, brick, and the way they are able to manipulate concrete to create their desired effects is very impressive. Also, I'm sure these homes fit their particular market niche and are just what their clients are looking for -- no doubt they have the business and marketing end of things right on the mark. For this I will give them 3 stars. However, being a design book, I do have some criticisms. While many of the exterior elevations are extremely impressive, I found the interiors somewhat out-of-touch with true Tuscan style. I realize that is why it is called "reflections", but in most cases, they seemed way too "modern" in spirit -- they somehow lacked a European feel. They also seemed quite glossed and sterile -- almost soul-less. Although they seemed to have lots of room for a party, the way they were decorated would be monumentally disturbed or destroyed by even light revelry, not to mention if there were children or pets in the house. In some respects the design was outright dishonest, as one house had two garage entries whose doors were completely landscaped over. Now, maybe the landscaping is hardy enough to endure being driven over on a daily basis, but the broken impression was that they were trying to hide the garage access with landscaping and 'natural stone sidewalk, even though the garage doors themselves made no effort at all to conceal themselves. It seems very strange and un-natural. I would like to see a book with alittle more of the spirit of the design in it, not just all the, admittedly, beautiful building materials and craftsmanship which is clearly manifested in these houses -- and maybe that's it right there: these struck me more as expensive houses than as homes. I am glad I bought the book; I will definitely use it as a reference. I'm also glad I bought it from a used book dealer at a discount.
Building a house? You need this book! Fantastic!.......2007-08-24
Buy this book, its cheaper than an interior decorator!
Awesome ideas and the floorplan is included for every single home.
This book showcases the marrige of modern home and old world feel. Its a perfect blend and you could practically hand a page to an architect and say... I want that! Great source material for inspiration.
American dream houses.......2007-05-21
This book is beautifully presented and features some truly amazing HUGE American houses. To me it's just a bit too glossy though. The golden lighting and hosed down grounds and roads to make everything that little bit more shiny goes against the gritty, rustic, traditional houses I was looking for from Tuscany and Andalusia.
If you're looking to build a house, there's some great floor plans and architectural notes though.
Outstanding!.......2007-03-16
I truly love interior design, and this is one book that is beautifully done. I'm so very pleased with adding this book to my design collection. I highly recommend this one to anyone that would like more ideas and dreams for their homes.
Love It!
Tuscan Homes.......2007-01-04

Book Description
From Sonoma wine country in the north to sundrenched La Jolla in the south, and from Malibu's seaside enclaves to Palm Springs nestled in the desert, California's distinctive regions are home to many of the world's most stunning swimming pools.
Since the ancient times, when manmade baths enhanced the gardens of Egyptian nobles, pools have been built as the ultimate symbols of luxury and leisure, providing a means of capturing one of nature's most elusive elements. Soon after the pool arrived in America in the nineteenth century, California became a mecca for pool owners, where many advances in pool design have been made over the last century.
Reflections on the Pool presents 40 perfect pools in 100 brilliant color photographs. These include the vibrant, Mexican-style architectural design of Ricardo Legorreta and the avant-garde, sensational creations of John Lautner, and illustrate the theories of the renowned landscape designers Thomas Church and Isabelle Greene.
Each section of the book features a type of pool, or an element of pool design. Pools imitating nature, lap pools, architectural or highly ornamented pools are discussed in detail, as well as historic pools such as Hearst's Neptune Pool at San Simeon or Thomas Church's vanguard kidney-bean-shaped design of 1948, and other early California examples that set precedents for the pools of today. The introduction outlines technical aspects of design, and gives a brief history of the pool, including the influence of Hollywood on its popularity.
Whether you own a pool or wish for one, and wherever you live, Reflections on the Pool is a color-infused, fresh, and inspirational display of the boundless possibilities in pool design.

Inspirational and Substantive.......2000-08-10
Detailed analysis of a few each of several different types of pools: lap pools, "natural" pools, indoor pools, famous pools, etc., all in California. Not a construction manual, but full of details worth considering when designing a pool. A must for anyone considering getting a pool on a difficult or very special piece of land.
A must for landscape designers and architects.......1999-05-03
This excelent book is focused exclusively on design. Very inspiring and unique. Do not expect to find anything about maintenance, it is a book meant for designers. A must for landscape designers and architects.
A topnotch swimming pool anthology.......1999-01-27
The photography is fabulous. Many of the pools were designed by the author, but this does not detract from the book. It is well balanced. The chapters include: the natural pool, lap pools, infinity edges, indoor pools, historical pools, among others.
A truly inspirational look at swimming pools.......1998-07-06
A lovely book, plenty of inspirational photography and sufficient detail to inspire the intended pool builder or professional. Coffee table interest

The Napa Valley is justly famed for its winemaking. It's also home to the people responsible for that reputation, prominent vintners like Mondavi and Duckhorn, as well as lesser-known wine stars including Larry Turley and Tony Soter. Michael Chiarello's Napa Stories, written with Janet Fletcher, profiles these and others whose lives are intimately entwined with Napa wine production and enjoyment. A Valley resident for 15 years, Chiarello knows many of his subjects personally, and has also cooked for many of them at his award-winning restaurant in St. Helena, Tra Vigne. This personal involvement gives his book's narrative immediacy; his cooking savvy results in the book's selection of delicious, accessible valley recipes, such as Roast Chicken with Fennel and Cheese, Grilled Lamb Loins with Napa Cabernet, and Bing Cherry Compote with Basil Gelato.
The book is organized around the illustrated profiles; in addition, Chiarello provides fascinating vignettes, such as Right Grape, Right Place; Napa Cheese; and Napa Wine, that elucidate the winemaking process (touching on such matters as varietal planting, fermentation, and blending) or celebrate the relationship of Napa food and wine. The Valley's compelling beauty and multicultural richness are captured in 150 color photos, which also depict the dishes in all their savor. With a resource list for authentic Napa Valley products, the book is an intimate blend of personal and territorial history--telling visual depictions, good food, and, of course, good wine. --Arthur Boehm

Excellent work Michael, as always...........2005-12-02
Put it this way folks...if it has Michael's name anyway affiliated with it, you can do no wrong by picking it up. Be it his cookbooks, product lines, restaurant, etc. Same holds true with this, lesser known (sadly), work. It is simply a gorgeous, gorgeous treatise to Napa Valley, and as a San Francisco native now living far away from home, I treasure this book. I find that I probably cannot muster together the adequate words to do it justice, but at this price (Bargain priced now), definitely get it. You will not regret it.
The Perfect Big Coffee Table Book!.......2002-11-14
Frankly, this book cost more than I usually pay for a bottle of wine. If this book were a bottle of wine, I would buy a case of it and share it with my very best friends. After savoring this classy book the wine you experience will never be the same.
Even though Steven Rothfeld's photographs of the Napa Valley and Chef Michael Chiarello's gorgeous presentation of some outstanding cuisine are very pleasing to the eye, the most impressive thing about this book is the history of Napa Valley that unfolds between the photographs.
This book is a beautiful seminar on how amazing it is that you can actually buy so many good bottles of wine. Although I have been to Napa Valley on several occasions and have taken more than a few tours through the various wineries, I did not fully appreciate all that is involved in making a good vintage.
The history of this famous valley and the many trials and tribulations of the wine makers along with the fickle role of Nature that goes into that bottle of wine you just uncorked will make that first sip a lot more meaningful.
Just Wonderful.......2002-10-15
This book is an absolute delight. The sheer intimacy of the stories make you feel like an insider, and it provides an insight to the pioneering spirit that has created an industry. I was completely (and very pleasantly) unprepared for how much I enjoyed this book. It is truly a treasure.
The Real Napa.......2001-08-30
This book is amazing. The stories told by the families are so rich and real that one truly begins to understand why the Napa Valley is so special. Michael Chiarello really does such a nice job with the families in the style and respect he shows (just as I have seen in his Tra Vigne Cookbook, and his PBS shows - Season by Season, and Michael Chiarello's Napa). The photography really brings one right into parts of the Napa Valley that have only been known previously by the people that live there. The recipes are so special too, as they come from the kitchens of these families and from Chiarello. This is simply the best book ever on this very special and beautiful place...America's Tuscany.
Beautiful photos, moving stories of Napa.......2001-08-28
The perfect compliment to a great Zin! Passionate and personal accounts of what moved some of the most interesting vintners to create great wines and how they celebrated their accomplishments. Unlike any book I've seen on the Napa Valley, and Michael brings alive the stories and traditions that make this place unique!
Book Description
Matthias Grünwald's world-famous Isenheim Altarpiece ranks among the most powerful expressionistic works of the Northern Renaissance. Characterized by great emotional force, exquisite handling of color and brilliantly interwoven subtleties of Christian iconography, the multi-paneled altarpiece has remained the object of intense scholarly interest and the main attraction of the Musée d'Unterlinden in Colmar, France.
Ruth Mellinkoff offers an original analysis of the altarpiece, uncovering the late medieval popular beliefs that underlie its unusual visual content. She places its rich imagery within a tradition of Christian art, and stunningly, discovers Lucifer among the angels observing the Nativity.

The Philosophy of a Private Investigator.......2007-03-19
Josiah Thompson taught philosophy at Yale and Haverford. Unhappy, he turned to a new career as a private investigator in San Francisco. The `Prologue' tells of his first assignment in shadowing some union leaders during a strike. Somebody had damaged equipment of a cable company, so the leaders were followed. There is a typical divorce case. A rich man's younger wife is straying, and they want photographs. Then Thompson write of his experiences as a philosophy professor, and his extra-curricular activities (Chapter 2). [That quote by Stimson is taken out of context; an off-the-books operation was shut down (Chapter 3).] Thompson is on a mission that "Sam Spade" never knew. Chapter 4 tells of a business trip to New England. Thompson got valuable information for a client.
Chapter 5 tells of investigating a swindle. Thompson investigated a murder conviction of a wrong man. He located a new witness to the shooting (Chapter 6). This witness had his memory recovered through hypnotism (Chapter 7). The conviction was reversed. [Writing down what was seen at the time is better than delaying testimony.] Chapter 8 explains the action to recover a child from a foreign country. This crossed a moral boundary. The events of the recovery are in Chapter 9. Could astrology affect an operation? Or luck? Chapter 10 concludes this investigation, so different from classic private eye stories.[The `Bay Guardian' named Thompson as the "Best Detective of 1987". Was this some kind of a joke?]
Read if you want to be bored!.......2003-02-18
When I saw this title, I thought, WOW! However, once I started reading, I realized I had made a mistake. It took me three weeks to read (do to falling asleep from the constant droning of the author). If you can avoid reading this, good for you. If you want to read about detectives, realize that this profession is mostly dull (this is from experience) and spend your money on something else.
At last, a real account of a private eye.......2000-01-14
A very interesting and informative read about one of the most misunderstood professions ever. Thompson takes us through some typical days of a modern private detective and soon we realize the old stereotype of a seedy office, bottle of bourbon, fast fists, and a Colt .45 belongs strictly in a '40's detective movie. Thompson points out that the computer is the "weapon" of choice now and it is the staple of the profession. Information gathering is what a detective is paid for and by networking with other computer users and agencies they carve out a living. If you want glamour and excitement, watch an old Bogie black and white. But if you want a true and factual account of what a private eye does and how they work then read this.

Finding Peace in Loss.......2007-08-08
When we lose just a part of our physical or mental being, we can suddenly feel that somehow we are not really ourselves anymore. Dr. Beisser had lost almost his whole physical self, but he shows us so eloquently how to overcome loss by changing his "point of view" both literally and mentally. I have gven a copy of this book to more than one person that I felt by their reading it, it could be of service in some way. I think anyone can benefit form this book, disabled or not and I highly recommend it!!
Flying Without Wings.......2000-10-23
This is an excellent true story. I think it would be very good for people in the medical and/or caregiving professions to read. Dr. Beisser is very inspirational in his journey to overcome his disability. The concepts in the book that were important to me are those feelings and experiences he relays about being dependent on physical care from nurses and doctors. Specifically, I learned alot from what he said he felt like when they cared for him grudgingly or with indifference; and also how he was affected when they simply would not listen to him. I have taken these words into my life and I always try to remember them when I am caring for someone who is dependent on me. Another important concept is the persistence he embodied. He simply never gave up, even when everybody was telling him to 'throw in the towel'. He did accomplish exactly what he set out to do, despite his obstacles. And finally, the concept of gratitude was BIG in this book. He was grateful even for his disability in the end. As amazing as this sounds, it is a pure and simple truth that we all must be grateful for absolutely everything that happens to us. Dr. Beisser shows the reader this lesson in a big way at the end of the book when he talks about his total acceptance of his circumstances and all the personal growth he has attained from those circumstances.
Excellent.......1999-07-23
I'm 25 hispanic female that recently read this book. I just became fascinated for the optimistic attitude and spirit of life that this book has. No words to describe what has done in my life
Superb, life-affirming memoir about life with a disability!.......1997-03-20
Arnold Beisser grew up with two life goals: To be a doctor and to be a national tennis champion. At 23, he achieved his first goal; at 24, his second. The year was 1950.
Soon after his tennis victory, en route to basic training that would have brought him to Korea as an army doctor, he developed a high fever and was brought to a military hospital. Within 24 hours, he was paralyzed from the neck down. As Beisser puts it, one moment he was a doctor; suddenly he was a patient, requiring an iron lung to breathe. He had contracted polio.
This outstanding book examines the funny, sad and philosophical aspects of life with a disability and its social consequences. Particularly fascinating are Beisser's stories of the stigma many people attach to disability. His courtship and marriage, as well as his career as a psychiatrist treating professional athletes, make for compelling reading.
Anyone who has struggled in life - because of disability or any other tribulation - will be permanently enriched by this unforgettable memoir.
Book Description
This is the authoritative and long-awaited volume on Berkeley's celebrated Free Speech Movement (FSM) of 1964. Drawing from the experiences of many movement veterans, this collection of scholarly articles and personal memoirs illuminates in fresh ways one of the most important events in the recent history of American higher education. The contributors--whose perspectives range from that of FSM leader Mario Savio to University of California president Clark Kerr---shed new light on such issues as the origins of the FSM in the civil rights movement, the political tensions within the FSM, the day-to-day dynamics of the protest movement, the role of the Berkeley faculty and its various factions, the 1965 trial of the arrested students, and the virtually unknown "little Free Speech Movement of 1966."

A rambling account that could have been better.......2000-12-04
My brother-in-law kindly loaned me his copy of this book. I was looking forward to reading about the genesis of the San Francisco music scene from a real insider's perspective. In it we learn that Darby Slick authored the first of the "hippie hits", Somebody to Love, and was in the vanguard of the embryonic San Francisco psychedelic music scene. We get to meet Bill Graham, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Jerry Garcia, and others while they were still nobodies just trying to follow their dreams. Unfortunately, the book needs massive editing to make it more than a rambling collection of anecdotes that often follow one another without segue. The author's priceless stories are often less than coherent, and it seems that he rarely finishes a thought before jumping to another in a stream of consciousness style. What we do come away with, though, is a tantalizing picture of some of the key players and events that somehow managed - without a plan - to push American culture from straight to hip (at least for a while!). I'm sure that nostalgia freaks will forgive the typographical errors and loose copy editing, but we all would have appreciated a sharper focus.
Great personal account of 1960's San Francisco scene.......2000-01-08
Darby Slick, guitarist for the Great Society and brother-in-law of Grace Slick, has written an autobiographical account of the rise of the San Francisco Sound. Don't You Want Somebody to Love is a distinctly personal perspective on those times -- part self-deprecating, part self-aggrandizing, it's a priceless account, written in an authentic voice by an actual participant.
Much of the text concerns Darby's views on the development of the 1960's scene in San Francisco, and on the rise of the counter-culture in the USA in general, about which he often provides thoughtful commentary. There's also plenty of stuff on the music of the Great Society -- how they rehearsed, how and when songs were written, and who played what, on which song.
There's also a great Stanley Mouse cover, a bunch of reproductions of Great Society concert posters, and a decent, if somewhat random, selection of black and white photographs.
Always read the stuff by the experts who really were there!.......1999-04-20
What a great afternoon-and the book "Do You Want Somebody to Love;" the Reflections of the San Francisco Sound-this is what you have to read-to really put yourself into the picture. Both author Darby Slick; & artist, Stanley Mouse... "MADE" the scene here in the City. You'd see a poster by Mouse, (or compatriot) on a ubiquitous telephone pole-and stand there staring, trying your darndest to decipher the message. If you had gone in the early days to one of the shows around town-you probably would have bumped into "THE GREAT SOCIETY" which figured very prominently in our rounds. We just got left class on an afternoon like today-and were being driven by a buddy who just got a gig chauffering-in the Mecerdes, over to Darby's new place in ForestHills, they had just got back from India, the place was clean & airy. Splendid in its decor; a Tiger-Skin Rug hung on the plaster wall, there were Persian Carpets on Hardwood Floors and light colored Silk Curtains everywhere. And this was a nice place to set up the new studio with a magnificent looking Sound-System, the fancy Control Panel took up about half the room. It was a nice visit-with the local emerging music!
