Spirituality, optimism, career planning, and self-help neatly blend together in this highly useful guidebook on living one's true purpose. Step by step, Adrienne shows readers how to discover one's calling (learning how to take advantage of synchronicity, intuition, and "uncommon sense") and organize life accordingly. This coauthor of The Celestine Prophecy does not promise a payoff of material wealth or worldly fame. Rather, she suggests that "writing your own job description" and "doing the dream" will result in a more spiritual and meaningful life. Her most impressive leadership comes in the section called "Deep Water," where she addresses the obstacles and suffering that frequently block the path to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide helps readers uncover the unsuspected, untapped power of synchronicity and intuition that will bring success, satisfaction, and serenity.

Everyone really has a purpose in life, says Carol Adrienne in her new guide to harnessing the power inside yourself. The question is: How do you learn to go with the flow and let your true nature guide you?

Chapter by chapter, The Purpose of Your Life explains how to locate the source of your innate energy and focus it, how to align yourself with the natural forces that swirl around us always, and how to develop the intuition that fosters synchronicity. The book is packed with illuminating anecdotes and profiles of fascinating people -- from artists to urban planners to Zen masters -- who describe how they found their own purposes. There are practical exercises throughout, along with charts, self-questionnaires, and other tools that help you understand yourself and your deepest aspirations.

As you learn to recognize and trust the voice of intuition, you'll find new doors opening and new possibilities everywhere. You'll feel invigorated by the potential you've unleashed, a power that will only grow with each new accomplishment. And you'll discover the serenity and satisfaction that come only to those who are living life to the fullest. The Force is with you -- all you have to do is reach out and start to use it.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide book for a seeker of Purpose.......2007-05-30

Carol Adrienne has written an excellent primer on the subject of Purpose. Whether you are a writer or speaker on the subject of Purpose, this book provides some important guidelines to simplifying an otherwise complex subject. The insights and the 'Talking to Yourself'sections at the end of each chapter are especially helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellant career guidance.......2006-03-09

I found this a very helpful book filled with ideas for people to find their purpose. I am a career guidance councelor and ninety percent of my clients do not have a purpose for why they are doing what they are doing in their work. They come to me saying "somethings missing in my work or life". It's often because they do not have a purpose which this book can help them create. Purpose is something we create or decide on. Many people think it's something mystical and we discover it by accident. This book gives people specific tools to help identify a meaningful purpose.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2004-02-16

The optimism in this book combined with its emphasis on the link between intuition and synchronicity was infectious. I wanted to learn more! A new book that I stumbled across has become my companion to this one. It is called LUCKY YOU!, by Randall Fitzgerald, and it takes this book's themes and subject matter and adds to it information about using dreamwork and meditation practices and even prayer to help create streaks of good luck in our lives. Both books are relentlessly inspiring and full of optimism and hope. I liked all of the stories and the author's own anecdotes about creating good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring true stories and practical spirituality!.......2003-10-07

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide has put together this excellent collection of suggestions, ideas and true life stories to inspire one to find one's higher purpose, and a jolly good job it does! It is interesting, well-written and entertaining throughout, with each chapter finishing with a few straightforward questions and exercises to move you on in the right direction. Part three, "deep water", deals masterfully with the darker and more difficult experiences one sometimes has while trying to connect more deeply with the soul's purpose.

A major theme is developing an awareness of synchronicity (meaningful co-incidence) experiences as guiding posts for deeper personal development. There are a large number of interviews with people from a wide range of backgrounds, all of whom have come to find their unique purpose through such ideas. Quotes from the famous such as the Dalai Lama and Frank Zappa (!), and not so famous are also highlighted throughout the text e.g."intuition is the creative, universal intention expressing through you" and "either I am lost, crazy and screwed up, or I am found and on a difficult part of the path".

I found the chapter on "the void" particularly supportive, especially the section on "holding your centre during confusion, chaos and fear". Carol Adrienne is not afraid to explore the sometimes harsh realities of the spiritual journey, but the book is essentially upbeat and positively inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars A rare find: a generous, gorgeous and intelligent design book plump with photos and information, lovingly designed........2007-05-14

Hawai'i: A Sense of Place, by Mary Philpotts McGrath, is a book written with intelligence, immense respect for its subject, and a true artist's eye. I read the entire book--something I don't often do when the photos are so satisfying--and I was very impressed with McGrath's high level of professionalism and gracious, articulate style. Not only is she at the top of her game but she's heads above all others. McGrath is an artist who `paints' with the landscape, furniture and elements at hand: she integrates the environmental and architectural influences with her clients needs. The photos illustrate the copy perfectly so you can actually learn something while enjoying this book! Another thing she has done is juxtapose charming sepia colored photos of buildings and furniture from Hawai'i in the 1930s 40s and 50s with appropriate full color photos of homes she's been commissioned to redesign. You can compare the old influence on the new. She has elevated what was once considered `kitsch' with an inspired respect for the deeper meaning and grace of Island style. She enhances everything she touches with a gentle knowing hand and it's gorgeous! The book is masterfully designed and plump with tons of photographs. Anyone interested in the beauty of the Islands and how to integrate that love into your home need look no further than Hawai'i: A Sense of Place. It's a useful jewel of a book no matter where you live.

4 out of 5 stars Hawaii a Sense of Place: Island Interior Design.......2007-04-03

This is a slick coffee table type book with lots of great pictures. And, as a coffee table book it works really well. It shows many really nice homes, rooms and grounds in Hawaii. In general, though, it's not as much a survey of Island Interior design as it is a showcase for the work of Designer Mary Philpotts McGrath and the artists and artisans she has worked with. All of these homes appear to be owned by the very rich, who have the means to have a professional designer work with them and near unlimited budget. That said, my wife and I were able to get a lot of design ideas from the details of the scenes presented and were able to get a sense for this designer's vision of Hawaiian decorating.

4 out of 5 stars Great pics for decorating Hawaii-style.......2007-03-17

I read about this book in Sunset magazine. I love Lanais. I want one at my house! It has so many photos of traditional Hawaiian decor and great info about the lifestyle. It's a great coffee table book because of its size and photo content.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabuous Idea Book.......2007-02-24

This book is a treasure trove of design ideas. Perfect for the Aloha decorator. The book is of high quality and the pictures are very professional.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii A Sense Of Place.......2006-12-30

This is a wonderful book! The photos are beautiful & the paper of a very high quality. Although the places photographed are clearly places that cost millions of dollars, I found lots of wonderful, simple ideas that I could afford. And for once I read all of the commentary included!

Book Description

Great writers inspire readers to head out in search of foreign sunsets, but in this instance, they inspired travel writer Michael Shapiro to head out for the great writers themselves. A Sense of Place is one writer's journey to visit all the heroes who have motivated him — to pack a pen and toothbrush, to find out where they live, why they chose the place, and how it influences their writing. In each scene, readers, writers, and travelers are given a glimpse of the locale and surroundings of the writer: Simon Winchester's Massachusetts, Redmond O'Hanlon's London, Jan Morris's Wales, or Frances Mayes's Tuscany. But then it's left up to the writers themselves to situate the reader and describe their lives, their craft, and their remarkable world, which they do with living room intimacy. The result is engaging, illuminating, and transporting for writers and travelers alike.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great traveling book.......2006-09-25

Michael and his interviewees give wonderful perspectives on being home and being on the road. The discussions are about how they've traveled, what they've learned, and what's important in their life. Frances Mayes about the community she found living in Italy. Jonathan Raban on traveling alone. Arthur Frommer on continually learning. And much more. This book isn't focussed on "I went there and this happened" but about life, perspectives. I especially enjoyed reading it while I was on 2 month trip myself. It will stimulate you to think about what's important to you.

5 out of 5 stars A stimulating, inspirational, provocative book.......2006-05-17

Michael Shapiro's conceptualization for the format of "A Sense of Place" was a stroke of genius. I found the book in the travel section of a bookstore. However, I feel-strongly, that "A Sense of Place" also belongs under the "Literature" and "Writing" headings.

"Rich" is the word which consistently entered my mind as I read the interviews with each of the 18 writers whom Shapiro included in this book. His questions were pertinent, knowledgeable, and provocative. The authors responded in kind. I am convinced that he has created a jewel of a reference book in a literary and philosophical sense. The feed-back he elicited transcends mundane travel writing per se--far and away.

The moment I started reading "A Sense of Place", I sensed that Shapiro had a special touch which immediately put his subjects at ease. I believe this gift greatly facilitated his ability to surmount the disjointedness of the standard Q&A format. He further enhanced the fluidity of the interview process through his consummate familiarity with the work of each writer.

Shapiro's choice of authors was judicious. These people are not guidebook writers. They are world-class thinkers, explorers of the esoteric, articulators of original thought. I recommend this book-unequivocally.

5 out of 5 stars Very good..........2006-05-15

I bought this book as soon as I read the list of writers who were interviewed for it. I was not disappointed. The experiences these writers have goes far beyond just two weeks of vacation like the rest of us. They have really seen a lot of the world - and not just the vacation spots. I really enjoyed reading all the different perspectives of these people. And they are just that: people who have seen something different and have shared their thoughts and experiences.

There were one or two writers that I did not care for, but I enjoyed reading their interviews anyway.

I was a little bit surprised to see Author Frommer's name on the list because he does guide books. I have used and enjoyed the Frommers Guides for years. It was good to read about him and his life as well.

One way I judge a book is how disappointed I am when the book is nearing its conclusion. I felt that most of these interviews were too short. I wanted to hear more from them. I have looked at and purchased some books of some of the persons interviewed. I guess I can learn more about them from their books.

4 out of 5 stars All the best in one place..........2006-04-27

I have been reading this book for 8 months now, and I'm still not finished......Because each time I read a new interview with a writer that I become intrigued with, I put this down & go and read that author's books.

This book is outstanding. I started reading travel/adventure memoirs about three years ago, my first being "Falling off the Map" by Pico Iyer. Pico's in "A Sense of Place" as well as my other favorite, Bill Bryson. Jeff Greenwald and Redmond O'Hanlon were both new to me from this book, and I highly recommend reading their books. I also found out which author that I would be better off staying away from. (Paul Theroux) I just didn't click with his viewpoints.

All of the interviews are enlightening - and I think I'm finally on the last one. I'll be sad when it's over. I really enjoyed learning about so many authors in a genre that I am just starting to sink my teeth into.

5 out of 5 stars Travel writers are generally interesting .......2006-02-25

I just finished reading "A Sense of Place". The author was on Rick Steves' podcast (public radio show) and was interesting enough that I ordered the book and read it.

The book opened me up to some other writers that I hadn't read and will in the future. While I've read some of Simon Winchester, Jan Morris and Isabel Allende and subscribe to Arthur Frommer's magazine, I picked up on Pico Iyer and am reading him as I write this. Bill Bryson and others strike me as potential interesting reads as well.

I sent an email to the author who immediately responded with a thank you for the communication. Reading a good book, especially one that leads you to other good books, is always a pleasure.

There's nothing more tiresome, either at the outset of a novel or thrust into the middle of one, than a lengthy description. So the sky was blue and the clouds a billowy white and a sheepdog lolled in the middle of the dusty lane. Get on with it, already. This is not to say that setting is not of utmost consideration to a fiction writer (or to any other writer). Jack Bickham applies the tip-of-the-iceberg theory to setting: "You should have a rich lode of factual information on hand before you begin to write," he advises here, "and should know how to sprinkle in those facts a few at a time." In Setting, from the Writer's Digest Elements of Fiction Writing series, Bickham explores the ways in which the setting one chooses affects the other elements of the story. "In real life as well as in fiction," Bickham warns, setting "tends to form character." The setting you opt for will determine what else you may and may not include in your story. Bickham has advice on how to communicate your setting to your readers, how to research a given setting, and how setting varies according to genre. He includes a "setting research form" that would be a nifty thing to take along when you're on the road. And remember, he says: "you must never deviate from verifiable facts." Even if the southern town you've chosen is completely imagined, you must never let the crape myrtles bloom before late summer. --Jane Steinberg

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Solid advice.......2006-03-05

Another excellent effort by Jack Bickham. Unfortunately his last book as he died afterwards.

Many nuggets of information that are indespensible for the writer. Here are a few:

When writing multi viewpoints you may want to introduce each viewpoint with a bit of setting to re-acquant the reader. For example. When Brenda, who just finished that horrible exam in History, left the classroom. . . .

Setting can set the mood. ie The dark clocktower with its crumbling facade rang yet again signifying Joe's soon demise. . . .

Setting should be brief and never stop the movement of a story.

Setting can provide a metaphor to underlie your story's theme.

How important it is for the setting to be factual.

When setting can be made up.

I could go on, but you should see the point. This is an excellent reference that will push your writing from hack to salable.

3 out of 5 stars Exhaustive Information - A Good Reference.......2004-10-14

Who knew there was so much to setting? This is a difficult read from cover to cover (as I trudged through it), but it is a good book to keep around as a reference. Not excellent, but good. This isn't so much a "how-to" on writing setting but more of a "why setting is important".

At the beginning of the book the author (Jack M. Bickham) explains that not enough detail is given to setting in writing classes and offers this book as a means to fill that gap. However, Bickham touches on most aspects of writing from the perspective of setting. So, is your plot weak? Look at it from your setting.

I would recommend that you read the first chapter or two and then keep the other chapters in mind if you feel you are stuck in a story and believe that an adjustment to setting could bring your story back to life.

3 out of 5 stars Rating the Elements of Fiction Writing series.......2001-04-22

I've read all the books in the Elements of Fiction Writing series and this is how I'd rank them.

"Scene & Structure" "Characters & Viewpoint" "Beginnings, Middles & Ends"

The above three books are invaluable -- must reads. They are the best of the series, in my opinion, and are packed with good information on every page. Well-done.

"Conflict, Action & Suspense" "Description" "Plot" "Manuscript Submission" "Setting"

The above five books are good, solid reads. Again, they contain good information and cover the subject decently.

"Voice & Style" "Dialogue"

To me, the last two books need to be rewritten. They are by far the weakest of the series. Both suffer from an annoying style, particularly Dialogue, and both are very skimpy on real information. Neither one is very helpful.

This is the order in which I'd recommend reading them.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping the Focus.......2000-07-05

Another Writer's Digest book that offers a multitude of ways ensure that your reader has a visual and sensual focus on place and time in your stories. The author not only tells you why setting is so important in supporting the plot and characters, but gives pleanty of exercises to help you create a clear picture of where and when your story takes place.

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable Information at so little cost!.......2000-03-09

As a "mature" student I was in awe of the insights the author was giving us which he has obviously learned on the anvil of experience. As an avid reader I was able to relate to his comments and advice and found myself nodding in agreement. This book is easy to read and full of practical advice, and examples, just the book for budding writers.

5 out of 5 stars Know Where We Stand, Then We Know Where We Are.......2002-03-16

My understanding and practice of landscaping is limited to the home and garden variety. Even at this level of home maintenance my skills and interests are limited. And I should be vacationing at a national park, say, the Grand Canyon or Yosemite, I would be as Moses standing on Pisgah taking in the general effect of the scenery from a distance. It comes as an entirely new revelation then, for one to be connected to or be part of a landscape takes more than Scott's fertilizers for the lawn, bordered fences, or sightseeing the Yosemite Valley.

After accepting a teaching position at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the author and her poet husband make their home in the Finger Lakes Region at upstate New York. There, the author begins her interrogative journey on this vast landscape of terra incognita and eventually finding herself (and does her family) to belong to the land(scape) and not merely as a transient trampling through it with indifference.

The book is repleted with historical anecdotes, myths, and local interests. It's is not a technical tome about geography, history, and anthropology of the Finger Lakes. Rather, this is the author's journal of how she strives to be with the land upon she dwells. As the author discovers, the landscape is the embodied lessons of the past for the present, and instructions for the future. The scenery of a place is only a prop. Without a landscape there can be no scenery. And that what makes this book rare and instructive.

Deborah Hall's work has filled a void in my understanding of our culture. I now think more about the history, the town, and the neigbhorood (including neighbors) where I live. Perhaps too, I will come to know the land where I stand, and not just my own lawn.

Book Description

In The Lure of the Local, Lucy R. Lippard, one of America's most influential art writers, weaves together cultural studies, history, geography, and contemporary art to provide a fascinating exploration of our multiple senses of place. Expanding her reach far beyond the confines of the art world, she discusses community, land use, perceptions of nature, how we produce the landscape, and how the landscape affects our lives. In this extensively illustrated, beautifully produced volume, she consistently makes unexpected connections between contemporary art and its political, social, and cultural contexts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Just for Writers!.......2003-09-08

I picked this bad boy up at the museumstore at SF Moma. It is a handsome, weighty book, with a beautiful, interesting cover. The book made a good impression on me.

My wife and I decided to buy this book because we have been interested in the theme of "landscape as witness". This is a concept we read about in Nancy Spector's accompanying essay in the Cremaster Cycle Guggeinheim museum catalog. Basically, the idea as it is expressed in Barney interpreted by Spector is that the landscape is a character in the narrative created by art.

As a brief survey of Amazon.com will reveal, Lippard is a well regarded writer on art. Honestly, I'd never heard of her before. This could have something to do with me not being intimately familiar with the New York City art scene or otherwise involved with the art world except as an occasional museum goer. Art is sort of at the periphery of my set of interests.

None the less, I found this a comprehensive, at times brilliant, survey of both artistic theories about the concept of place as well as a thorough documentation of the specific expressions of these theories in art work. Lippard's scope of reading and breadth of knowledge about art all over the United States (this book is entirely about the U.S.) is nothing short of stunning.

The actual form of the book is a little difficult to explain, The book has a five part structure, each part with a title: Around Here, Manipulating Memory, Down to Earth: Land Use, The Last Frontiers: City and Suburbs and Looking Around. Each of these parts contains sub-chapters that are titled with various aspects of the five parts. Lippard's style is basically to situate each chapter with a brief survey of what other writers have said about the "subject", followed by a description of different acts of arts intermingled with commentary. Each of the pages also contains images with substantive critical passages. Along the top of each page, there is a running essay about the author's experiences growing up in Maine.

I found her work to be fairly comprehensive: Although she has end notes and a thorough bibliography, I found myself doubting that any of them so totally nailed the relationship between art and the concept of place.

If the author or her representatives are reading this, I would recommend updating this book in another couple of years.

Lippard is a self-declared liberal. Although I did not always agree with her analysis, I admired the manner in which she was able to outline her bias in a non-intrusive way. She could be more forceful with her arguments. I don't think anybody could begrudge her opinions.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for interdisciplinary artists.......2002-03-25

If you are a person who cares about places, an artist who is looking for ideas on how to incorporate a place-based ethic in your work, a nomad who longs for a greater sense of rootedness, or an environmentalist who wants to explore new ways to communicate, this is the book for you. The depth and breadth of Lucy Lippard's experience of America is impressive. She has lived in Maine, New York City, and New Mexico, and has collected stories of artists who are reflecting on their relationship to the place they live from around the country. The book is incredibly diverse, looking at the issues of homelessness, the changing face of the American West, the unique personalities of suburbs, rural areas, and big cities (to name just a few topics) through the lens of geography and art.

The book is well written, although it might seem challenging to some. Expect a left-of-center view from a respected and extremely knowledgeable critic and observer of American life.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Insightful Product.......2003-07-04

This is perhaps the most interesting Bible I have ever seen. What the editors have done is taken the text of the Bible and arranged it chronologically (based on both factual historical timeline and scholarly evidence for authorship dates) so as to create a Bible that moves through both time and events which are chronicled therein. This is by no means a "carry to church" or devotional version, but more of a study Bible meant to place Biblical narratives and events in the course of human history into perspective, and to exhibit how they may have intertwined in the fabric of the past. This would be an excellent Bible for every history teacher to own.

Book Description

When Georgia O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917, she was instantly drawn to the stark beauty of its unusual architectural and landscape forms. In 1929, she began spending part of almost every year painting there, first in Taos, and subsequently in and around Alcalde, Abiquiu, and Ghost Ranch, with occasional excursions to remote sites she found particularly compelling. Georgia O'Keeffe and New Mexico is the first book to analyze the artist's famous depictions of these Southwestern landscapes.

Beautifully illustrated and gracefully written, the book accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It reproduces the exhibition's 50 paintings and includes striking photographs of the sites that inspired them as well as diagrams of the region's distinctive geology. The book examines the magnificence of O'Keeffe's work through essays by three noted authors. Barbara Buhler Lynes, Curator of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and organizer of the exhibition, discusses the relationship of the artist's paintings to the places that inspired her.

Frederick Turner offers an illuminating essay contrasting O'Keeffe's fabled aloofness from the well-established art colony in Santa Fe with her intense closeness to the local landscape she so fiercely loved. Lesley Poling-Kempes furnishes a fascinating chronicle of O'Keeffe's years in the region as well as a useful explanation of the geological forces that produced the intense colors and dramatic shapes of the landscapes O'Keeffe painted.

5 out of 5 stars Living in New Mexico.......2007-07-29

I live 12 miles from Abiquiu, New Mexico where Georgia O'Keefe lived and painted the last 39 plus years of her life. One can only imagine the beauty from her paintings unless you've had the opportunity to see it in person. The book does have quite a few of the paintings she did while living in Abiquiu and at Ghost Ranch; however, if you are interested in reading about her life, the book to read is Portrait of An Artist; A Biography of Georgia O'Keefe by Laurie Lisle. I couldn't put the book down!

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Place.......2005-08-20

I've toured her home in Abiquiu, visited the museum in Santa Fe, and now toured Ghost Ranch to view the locales of many of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings. This book is a perfect reminder of these experiences and one I already treasure.

Book Description

The current crisis in geography education has spawned several new books on mapmaking, many of which advocate either recitation and drill or a conceptual top-down model that ignores children's interests. Mapmaking with Children presents an inspired alternative. Maintaining that there is no substitute for hands-on experience, David Sobel places the initial emphasis on local projects--projects that begin in students' own backyards and communities, projects that provide a sense of place.

As Sobel explains, "In the beginning, children's maps represent their experiences of beauty, secrecy, adventure, and comfort. With these affective endeavors as a foundation, I then gradually start to focus on scale, location, direction, and geographic relationships. The development of emotional bonds and cognitive skills needs to go hand in hand in my approach to developmentally appropriate social studies and geography." To that end, his book identifies each stage of development, presenting relevant theoretical issues and several appropriate projects.

In the beginning, students stay close to home, mapping their known world. Gradually, they move on to their neighborhood, developing a sense of place, scope, and perspective. Eventually, once students are older, they explore the nation, the world, even the solar system, creating raised relief maps and contour maps to develop visual literacy and spatial reasoning skills. Vivid illustrations of the students' work are provided throughout to let you observe each stage of development.

Mapmaking, as Sobel uses it, has relevance across the curriculum. In addition to appealing to social studies teachers, this book will be of interest to science teachers, language arts teachers, and math teachers looking for new ways to invigorate the curriculum.

4 out of 5 stars Mapmaking with Children Exactly What I Was Looking For.......2005-10-14

As a water educator for a local watershed organization, getting the idea of a watershed across to elementary school students can be challenging. This book focuses on kids developmental capacities and how they relate to a place at different ages. Not only perfect for classroom teachers, this book should be on the shelves of every environmental educator.

5 out of 5 stars This is a gem of a book........2000-02-02

This is a wonderful, well-written book that will be of interest to a wide variety of people--most of whom will unfortunately probably not encounter it--such as parents and homeschoolers and child development professionals and environmental educators, as well as its (presumed by me) targeted audience of classroom teachers. It is the kind of work that uses one subject to explain much about the world, the way we think and use information. It is also a how-to manual on mapmaking with children. I came away from the book with a very clear understanding of several map projects I could do with my children. Because the book first lays the theoretical groundwork for children's understanding of maps, the actual map projects seem intuitive--experiential education at its finest. The author's passion for his subject, and his scholarship come through. There is much information and guidance on what sorts of maps are appropriate for children of different ages to be encouraged to create--from treasure hunts to classroom maps to sophisticated area maps. I am buying copies for my children's teachers!
