    Book Description

Brad Schiller's text, The Microeconomy Today, 10/e, is noted for three great strengths: readability, policy orientation, and pedagogy. His accessible writing style engages students and brings some of the excitement of domestic and global economic news into the classroom. Schiller emphasizes how policymakers must choose between government intervention and market reliance to resolve the core issues of what, how, and for whom to produce. This strategic choice is highlighted throughout the full range of micro, macro, and international issues. Every chapter ends with a policy issue that emphasizes the markets vs. government dilemma. And Schiller packs his chapters with the facts of economic life—real stories and applications, not fables. This is a book that teaches economics in a relevant context with careful pedagogy. Schiller 10e is for students motivated by real-world policy issues who want to become economically literate. This is a book students actually READ. Schiller is also known for its cutting-edge and current coverage of today’s issues.

    2 out of 5 stars Terrible Quality.......2007-03-06

I've just started to try and read this book as part of my MBA, however the book is of terrible production quality. The pages are all out of order, and some are falling out as I turn over the pages. If you have this book mandated as part of a course as I did, you'll just have to live with it, otherwise choose another book that you don't have to hop around in just to get the pages in order.

Although the concepts are presented in a fairly understandable way, they are not tied together well for someone new to macroeconomics. Particularly annoying are the missing variable definitions for formulas. With Barron's as a supplement, it makes more sense.

    4 out of 5 stars Macroeconomy Today.......2000-04-14

This textbook is quite a comprehensive of introductory macroeconomics. Great graphs, well-explained, carefully thought out. The one downside is that it is quite idealistic, as one would expect of a neo-classical economist. The author does not recognize flaws in the theories nor does he acknowledge that the real world is not so cut-and-dry and ordered as we would be led to believe. However, as stated before, this is a wonderful introductory text for anyone who wants to understand the economy today.

    4 out of 5 stars Expansive review!.......2005-10-17

I have been keeping up with AV via periodicals and product pamphlets. This was to me not a lot of new information but for folks who are just starting out, this would be a GREAT place to begin. Not too tech-y, tech-y enough when it needs to be. A decent overall offering that does what it says.

2 out of 5 stars NOT for Everyone.......2005-09-16

I purchased this book as a requirement for a new job. I recently left the practice of law and went to work for a company that designs, sells and installs home theaters. Having graduated from law school, one would think I could understand just about everything. Wrong. This book touts itself as one that is for the masses - the everyday schmo who is looking to do this themselves. While extraordinarily well written, it is NOT for everyone. It is overly complex and technical for the everyday guy and is more apropos for electrical engineers or experts in the field. finally, the issue I received was supposed to be a recent edition and, if it was, it's already painfully out of date and needs revamped.

3 out of 5 stars Some good stuff here - Some is total nonsense!.......2004-08-28

Robert Harley is a "high-end audiophile" and you need to keep that in mind when reading thru any of his books. In "Home Theater For Everyone", he provides a lot of useful information. But he also supplies a lot of "hokum" as well. That is, there is much in this books that he states as fact when infact it is nothing more than his own (often erroneous) opinion.

If you are already well-versed in audio/video equipment, you'll know when Mr. Harley goes "off-the-wall" with his crazy statements and conclusions. But if you're new to the world of audio/video, I say "buyer beware". If you follow all of Mr. Harley's advice, you will end up spending thousands of dollars on overpriced equipment and unnecessary frills.

Buy the book for the great general information Mr. Harley provides. But be wary of some of his conclusions and advice. One area where I strongly agree with Mr. Harley is when he advocates to do your own shopping and make your own judgements.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of good information and tommyrot.......2004-06-09

Much of the information in this book is good, but a couple of issues need to be addressed. Tomlinson Holman, a good engineer, is the man behind both the THX professional cinema house certification and the Home THX certification program for home theater components. I have a substantial issue with, particularly, the latter because it consists of a secret set of parameters, which are divulged only to licensees under nondisclosure. Because the requirements are themselves secret, how can anyone judge their validity, or the comparative value of the certification?

Mr. Harley, on the other hand, is no engineer at all, nor even a hands-on amateur, but a promoter. He combines occasionally astute observations with technical nonsense, so that even when his conclusions appear to make sense you have no idea how he got there. Simply put, he often either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he does and is simply writing what equipment vendors and the gullible want said.

3 out of 5 stars Detailed info, much of it dated, more current books out ther.......2003-07-09

This author obviously knows what he's talking about, but the book is dated and too detailed on some topics and not enough detailed on other topics to really provide a good broad brush of the topic. There's lots on audio, but not enough on much of what is going on today, like Windows XP Media Center Edition and PVRs and DirecWAY and other things. This is a consumer electronics focus in an increasingly broader industry. I've put a lot more into my home theater than he's talked about. I'm buying Home Theater for Dummies to see what they say -- their outline is broader and their edition is just out.

    Book Description

A third of the entire history of cinema is represented by films produced from 1970 onwards. Cinema Today explores this history, what may be referred to as the Third Age of world cinema, and the films, people and technologies which have shaped its development. The work of film-makers who have made a significant contribution to the film industry during this period is also highlighted and discussed.Cinema Today begins by examining the moment at which the modern blockbuster was born. In the early 1970s a string of spectacularly successful films such as MASH (1970), The Godfather (1972) and Jaws (1975) transformed the economic climate of Hollywood and the power relationship within it. The first half of the book looks at New Hollywood and explores its recent and continued development through film genres including Crime, Science Fiction, Horror and Comedy. The book identifies how social and economic change influenced the development of films, assesses the impact of emerging new waves of cinema on Hollywood and Hollywood's reaction to these changes. Influential directors such as Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, George Lucas, Spike Lee and Steven Spielberg are all featured in these chapters along with their films. We then move onto the world stage where Edward Buscombe explores the unique style of film output from Australasia, Africa, India, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and South America. Specific film genres and trends of these regions are highlighted and discussed in relation to the social and economic climate of the time. Many of these film industries, such as French, Indian and Japanese, are significant centres of world production. In these chapters, Buscombe examines the Bollywood cinema of India, art house cinema of France, the British comedy, Japanese crimefilms and Mexican horror films. The films of Bernardo Bertolucci, Pedro Almod+var, Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski, Luc Besson, Mike Leigh, Ousmane Semb+ne and Chen Kaige are just an example of the range of work discussed. With a comprehensive directors' filmography, a bibliography, chronology and index at the back of the book, Cinema Today is an invaluable reference tool.

5 out of 5 stars Explores the cinematic history, films, people, & technology.......2005-05-09

In Cinema Today, author and movie historian Edward Buscombe explores the cinematic history, films, people, and technologies of movie making from 1970 to the present day. Beginning with the rise of the blockbuster in the early 1970s, Buscombe shows how a string of spectacularly successful films such as MASH (1970); The Godfather (1972); and Jaws (1975) transformed the economic climate of Hollywood and the evolution of how movies were made, distributed, and marketed. The first half of Cinema Today covers the "New Hollywood" and the rise of genre films including Crime, Science Fiction, Horror, and Comedy, as well as the rise of such influential directors as Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, George Lucas, Spike Lee, and Steven Spielberg. The second half of Cinema Today focuses on the unique style of film output from other parts of the world including Australasia, Africa, Indian, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Specially attention is devoted to the "Bollywood" cinema of India, art house cinema of France, the British comedy, Japanese crime films, and Mexican horror films, as well as the specific contributions of such directors as Bernardo Bertolucci, Pedro Almodovar, Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski, and others. Enhanced with more than 700 iconic and behind-the-scenes images, as well as a comprehensive directors' filmography, a bibliography, a chronology, and an index, Cinema Today is a seminal and strongly recommended addition to professional, academic, and community library Film History reference collections and Cinematic History Studies supplemental reading lists.

    Book Description

The classic work on film directing, now fully revised for the millennium

with a foreword by James Garner
    introduced by Robert Wise

The Boston Globe said The Film Director ìis more than a solid nuts-and-bolts textbook. It is a fascinating behind-the-kliegs look at the director's world. Backstage raved, At long last, a book about directing written by a successful full-time practitioner of the craft. The New York Times called The Film Director, "Interestingly written as a clear and well-illustrated handbook for the beginner", and Film Reviewer exclaimed "The aspiring director and the student could not find a more expert and practical guide to the mastering of the directorial craft".

Now, award-winning Hollywood director Richard L. Bare's invaluable work on craft and craftsmanship has been completely revised and updated for a new generation of filmmakers. In it, they will not only learn to direct, they will also perhaps more importantly ñ find out how to get a job directing.

A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at moviemaking, The Film Director uses firsthand examples from giants such as Hitchcock, Wilder, Kubrick, Stevens, and Vidor along with discussions of the working methods of Cameron, Scorsese, Spielberg, and Nichols. The mechanics and techniques of staging and handling the camera are examined, the art of keeping a story moving is explained, and working with actors so that they can give their personal best is analyzed as Bare did with the volume's foreword writer, James Garner, whom he discovered. Richard L. Bare brought George Lucas and Robert Altman to his Hollywood shoots so that they could see how industry professionals really work; now anyone who picks up this book can learn, too.

This is a must read for the beginning director on the way to a first big break, as well as for anyone interested in the challenges and triumphs of the director's art.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good, but not great...........2006-09-19

I did enjoy reading this book but after a while Bare's stories about his more "famous" friends got a little tiresome. And I always found myself wondering, who is Richard Bare? Is he responsible for any of the greatest films of all time? The answer is no. In fact, Richard Bare's greatest achievement was directing all of the episodes of Green Acres. And that's it, most of credits are for television, not film. Personally, if I were to read a book about film directing, I'd like to read a book by a reknowned director, like David Mamet's "On Directing Film". Mamet was able to get through everything that goes into directing a film in a slim 107 page book. I'd recommend that book over this book any day.

3 out of 5 stars LIKED it, but didn't LOVE it..........2002-01-29

The strength of this book is that Richard Bare tells a lot of very entertaining stories that he or other directors have had to face. In doing so, he engages the reader and invites us on his personal journey through his career in making motion pictures. In particular, his stories about Spielberg & Lucas are engaging. Also, I think that the chapter on the two different forms of acting was particularly good.

The weakness of this book is that it is more a collection of "war stories" applied to chapters that are supposed to be instructive. In other words, he has chapters including: "Camera as a directors tool", "working with a film editor", "creating a job for yourself", etc... however, these chapters are not particularly insightful in teaching one about the topic. Part of this is the result of being laid out in what feels like a random order, instead of each chapter building on the previous one. Additionally, the book gets bogged down in that it tries to cover so much that it is only successful superficially.

Again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Thus, I would highly recommend it as a read to anyone that is seeking pleasure. However, if you are after the true "directors" insight... I would refer you to "Making Movies" by Sidney Lumet. "The Film Director" is to "Making Movies" as "Mobsters" is to "The Godfather".

1 out of 5 stars This book ended my film career before it started!.......2001-09-07

In 1972, I was real excited about going to a film school and becoming a filmmaker. In the back of this book, there was a list of colleges offering film degrees. I chose one of those listed, the University of Oregon in Eugene. After a freshman year of fun, I went into my counselor and said I was ready to declare my major in film. "We don't have a film school here." he solemnly stated. "But it's in the book!" I exclaimed. I immediatly tried to get into UCLA, but the wait was 1 1/2 years. Thus endeth my pursuit of a film career (I'm now in TV advertising). I found this book recently in a bookstore and sure enough...it still lists U of Oregon as offering a film degree!!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Practical.......2000-10-03

Richard Bare does a tremendous job in inspiring the novice director giving him/her a down to earth look into what it takes to be a successful director. The insights and historical facts to the realities of movie making made me aware of the passion and courage many directors must have to bring their vision alive. Mr Bare is forthrite and yet encouraging in revealing the truths to what will make a great director. The book is practical and gives a step by step guide to the role the director must play in dealing with cast and crew from pre to post production. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, covers a lot of ground.......1999-05-16

This is a very good book. Bare's knowledge is from experience and is not garnished from other books. Well worth the price.

It will cost me too much in shipping to bother returning the second unwanted book. So I'm stuck with it. I don't know if I will order this way again. It is too much of a bother to rectify any mistakes. I prefer dealing directly with Amazon.

      Book Description

Building a Home Movie Studio & Getting Your Films Online is the first authoritative handbook for aspiring independent filmmakers and weekend hobbyists interested in learning how to build their own movie studio and get their films presented online.

As heralded in numerous articles in the New York Times and other publications, cinema's newest revolution is the Internet indies--films created by independent filmmakers in their own home movie studios and exhibited on the Internet. With new tools available via the latest digital technology, such as Flash animation software, Web features can be produced easily and inexpensively. Thanks to easy access to the Internet, these features can now be exhibited worldwide without benefit of a distribution contract movie deal. According to Robert Algeri, Web entrepreneur and founder of Shortbuzz.com, "Filmmakers have never had such opportunities. They can get more exposure from one day on the Web than in an entire year on the festival circuit."

"After years of puttering attempts to prove itself as a medium for mass entertainment, the Internet is morphing into a more offbeat version of television that is often more profane and always less formulaic than its broadcast and cable counterparts. And just as millions of people now get information and buy products from previously unheard of sources on the Internet, some--including a few television producers--have begun to turn to it for entertainment produced outside the traditional entertainment industry." (New York Times, 10/30/00)

Today there are dozens of web sites listing thousands of films, from feature length indies to avant-garde shorts, available to anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. Among the most popular sites are Atomfilms, Ifilm, and Pop.com. The most widely heralded Internet film to date, George Lucas in Love, became such an underground hit in Hollywood that private videotapes were passed around. In October, 1999 the film became the first attraction on the streaming-video web site Mediatrip.com. In April 2000 the nine-minute film was released as a video and has sold nearly 50,00 copies. (There are over 250 Star Wars films alone made by fans that can be viewed and downloaded over the Internet.)

Building a Home Movie Studio and Getting Your Films Online shows aspiring filmmakers and other interested individuals how to build their own home movie studio, as well as offering a "real world" step-by-step example illustrating how a film gets transferred from a home computer to a web site for exhibition. Included is a brief history of independent film and its place on the web; a step-to-step "how-to" guide to building a home movie studio and using current technology to get a film distributed online, from video streaming to downloadable films--including live internet Webcasts and recordable CD-ROMS; several case studies, describing how amateurs have gotten their material online and viewed by an audience; an appendix, detailing online film festivals and distributors; and a glossary of simple definitions to technical vocabulary.

Whether building a video streaming web site or submitting work to Internet film festivals and online distributors, this book meets the needs of anyone who wants to get their projects out to a worldwide audience.

What's a movie studio? Sound stages, backlots, wardrobe, makeup, props, and so on. The title leads you to think you'll be able to use their help to construct at least something in your garage, spare bedroom, or other workspace. But, no. You get NONE of this in the book. The title is misleading, since all you get is the same type of shallow information that you'll find in every other home video book. The same stuff about which outdated camera to get, which outdated software to get, and blah blah blah.

        Book Description

Traditional narrative structure hit a wall--or rather it hit the glass of a kaleidoscope--in the 1990s, when art began to function as a kind of editing table on which daily reality could be remixed and recreated. Narrativity considers the importance of new narrative modes, looking not only at the visual arts but at contemporary literature and film, and the mutual influences between them. It tackles the question of narration--its ruptures and mutations--in an age of media culture and video games, where the ludic and interactive principle is an important element. Through reflections on time, duration and temporal protocols, which have taken on major aesthetic stakes, it seeks to reaffirm that the work of art is an "event" before being a monument or a mere testimony--an event which constitutes an experience. And, not least, it considers the artistic games and gambles allowed and forced by all this change.
