Book Description

Artwork from 30 of the industry's top photographers is used to highlight both clear-cut shooting strategies and colorful, cutting-edge approaches to family portraiture in this handbook intended for idea gathering and inspiration. Advice on focal length, perspective, and maximizing the potential of digital equipment highlights the technical aspects of family portraiture while group posing strategies demonstrate how best to flatter each subject and convey a sense of family unity. A lengthy discussion of lighting—the backbone of portraiture—and the manipulation of shadows and highlights instructs photographers on how to create mood and interest in a variety of lighting scenarios, both indoors and out. Specifics on adjusting body lines, colors, and shapes, working with young children, and creating a comfortable atmosphere ensure that the photographer captures the unique personality of each family with dynamic and attractive images.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2007-09-28

This book is very helpful with posing techniques, lighting and other tips. Well worth the money. Lots of quality photo examples. Great to have in your reference library.

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas for group Photography.......2007-09-10

There were so many inspiring examples in this book. I loved the ideas for photographing large groups. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to perfect the art of photographing families or groups.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, comprehensive book.......2007-08-23

As a retired professional photographer I expected the finer points of family portraiture to be missing. Instead, it was excellent both in the fundamentals and in the detailed aspects of photographing groups. As a retiree I am using it for in-depth review, and I love it. My wife and I studied with Monte Zucker many years ago and we were happy to see his work included, along with Bill McIntosh and other fine professionals.

4 out of 5 stars Great photos.......2007-08-11

The book was great in it's explanations about what techniques to use for the best possible shot. I'll be using it's techniques from now on.

5 out of 5 stars Great Hobby Photog.......2007-07-21

This book is very readable. It is short and to-the-point. This is the type of book to pick up, read and then go do the things described. I read quickly and started my own photography experimenting. I also enjoyed being able to go back and quickly find answers to my questions while working. This is a very user-friendly book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2007-09-03

Most of the things covered in this book are already known to photographers that have worked in the field, but for photographers starting in shooting models, this guide gives them a good start in the field.

Even though the book is titled 'A Step-by-Step Guide for Photographers', the information in here is even more valuable for models. Info on height classifications, measurements, posing, etc. I'd say all new models, and those that want to be models, this is a 'must have' book.

5 out of 5 stars Professional model porfolios.......2007-08-10

This was a fantastic book. So much information. Every model and photographer should read this.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful hints to helping models.......2007-06-13

This really helps with up and coming models who need a bit of direction.
I share this book with every new model I use.
Brings ideas to both of us.
It helps the models understand thier side of the business also.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-03-12

It's very pro, a little out of fashion, it's a 2004 book, so that's normal I guess. If you don't work in the USA market, it is a good guide about how to work.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic "Glimpse" into the world of shooting for models.......2007-02-15

This is a fantastic book. It provides great information about doing photography with a model's portfolio in mind It provides good examples with lighting guides, and dips the reader's toe into the fashion/modeling industry with just enough information to excite some readers - and scare others away. this is a good thing.

I just longed for more information; it lacked information about the modeling industry as a whole, particularly modeling agencies and how the work. this is good information for a photographer who wants to help models break into or maintain effective work with such agencies. Sadly, this information was lacking in the book, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. This information could help photographers work better with agency models on their portfolios.

That said, this book has a plethora of information on portfolios, the dos and do not, and plenty of other supplemental information that can be applied to any situation involving model photography.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very Disorganized!.......2007-07-12

Sample pictures do not have a clear description of which poses are good or bad. You have to read text which is usually in different pages to determine the expalantion of the poses.

Writer is not clear in his explanations and is hard to follow.

I will not buy any other books by this author.

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I had hoped.........2007-03-27

This book did not have the creative and interesting posing techniques I had hoped for. Outdated is the best word I can think of to describe this book.

1 out of 5 stars Utterly disappointing, do not buy this book!.......2007-03-11

I cant begin to describe how utterly useless this book is. The title suggested a book that would provide eduction and insight to posing for portrait and wedding photography: the reality is so far from the truth you wouldnt believe!

The poses and photos shown are amatuer, pathetic and laughable... at best. I constantly had to show my girlfriend the photos and commentary and we would collapse into fits of laughter....in fact, that might be the one positive comment I can make: it's a good laugh!

The photos used are very old (lots of 1980's glam fashion here) and the models are stiff and ill at ease. They look more like firing squad victums than examples of portrait and wedding subjects. The poses are over-done, look fake and staged to a painful degree.

To top it off, there is little teaching or recognisable educational structure to this book. I read it (a painful process) from start to finish and felt I learnt nothing. Nada, zip, zero. What a waste of time and money.

Do yourself a big favour and DO NOT buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best one I have read .......2007-02-16

My model (daughter) and I use this book as our posing bible.
It has improved the appearance of our photos one hundred percent.
By reading the book, we now have the ability to spot "bad" poses and to work out better ones.
I never realized there was so much to hand, feet and head position that went into making THE photo you are looking for.
If you only purchase one book to help you grow as a portrait photographer, this is the one.
Don't expect pretty people in pretty poses, this is a how to book that builds from one pose to next.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-11-09

This book was just what I was looking for! All of the tips and hints throughout the book have made me a more conscious photographer. The art in the book shows what you should and shoud not do while posing clients. It's an advantage to see the good and the bad right next to each other to advance personal critques.

Product Description

This is the picture-taker s bible on lighting, posing and taking gorgeous photographs that will increase sales and profits. The guide is organized as a thorough and detailed shooting script for a typical wedding day. 144 pages, 8 1/4 x 11

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The perfect level of detail for a beginner.......2007-06-12

This book covers all the main topics of wedding photography for the beginner. Not too much detail on camera settings; the focus is more on things you want to be aware when photographing the different parts of the wedding from before the wedding until after the reception. Pictures are great as examples and text is easy to read and understand.

2 out of 5 stars Only for film photographers.......2007-05-19

I got this book hoping for info geared for digital photography, it has none. The book was written when digital photography was just becoming popular. It is good for formal wedding posing ideas, but it gives no technical info for digital photography. All of the info is based on using film.

3 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2007-04-29

I am a beginning photographer but after having reviewed Digital Wedding Photography by Ken Johnson, this book I would say is a distant 3rd. Overall the book is well very simple, well written but low on explaning tecniques. This book dealt with more emphasis on wedding workflow from the dressing room to church and beyond. As a photographer I think we all know that already....I would have been happy if emphasis was put on techniques and tips on how to capture the moment. If this was my first book I may have been impressed with it but sorry folks Ken's book is far more superior in quality overall.

2 out of 5 stars Not rocket science.......2006-07-31

I was hoping for a book that offered some real value - an easy to read, quick to digest volume that provided some real insight. But this is basic content that may be of value to those who have never taken a picture before, most likely using the "professional techniques" verbiage in the title to attract more buyers. It certainly got me!

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2006-06-30

After several years of photography and being frustrated with the results I was getting I finally decided that maybe I did need to read the manuals that came with the camera. After countless hours of trying to decipher what exactly they were trying to explain to me, it became clear that I needed something a little more "user friendly" that would still provide the necessary information to help me get the results I was looking for. After looking over several books I settled on Professional Techniques for the Wedding Photographer by George Schaub. I am not a wedding photographer by trade, in fact I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to a wedding (including my own). I found this book to be quite interesting as Mr. Schaub went through several lighting techniques that can be used not just for weddings but for all portraits. The book was written in a concise manner giving you the necessary theory behind lighting followed up with a real world example with diagrams of where to set the lights. After reading this book I still hate going to weddings and would rather go to the dentist than sit through a session with the new couple showing their wedding photos. But at least I understand how the photographer got the results they did and how I can recreate them to make me a better photographer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent photographic reference.......2005-09-30

This is a MUST-HAVE book if you take photography seriously. There is so much that goes into taking a photograph and getting the right lighting equipment to make a shot look the way it does. This book is amazing. It is a huge hard-back book filled with pages of classy nude photographs and implied nude shots that are taken from many different angles, backdrops, and with various types of lighting: both outdoors and indoors.

There are diagrams for the photos to show just exactly where the lighting was placed (and what type of light) to achieve the affect. Most of the male nude photos are monochrome and although it said "male nude" - there isn't a nude penis shot which I thought was kind of odd. I had kind of hoped to see more in the male category. Shooting a guy in blue jean shorts isn't exactly a male nude shot. However there was excellent light detail described on the torso with the highlights and shadows.

My only real complaint is that there are some excellent diagrams that seem great but the author neglected to show the correlating photograph that went with it. There are maybe 10-20 like this. But the rest of the diagrams have photos. So the good outweighs the bad.

One thing I love, which deserves five stars just for this: the entire book is designed so that someone WITHOUT a digital camera can achieve these effects. I LOVE digital and rely on it completely. But this book shows how you can get these amazing effects with a simple 35mm as well.

Overall, the rest of the reviews are right. The photos are classy, the quality is superior, excellent source of information. I wish there was just a tad more versatility when it came to other angles or expressions. But for the mood this book went to capture, I think the author did an amazing job.

I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Falls short of expectations, missing images.......2005-09-09

There is a reason this book is so cheap. I am going to say the other book from Rotovision "photographing people; portraits, fashion, glamour" is a much better book overall. This book has fairly tame nudes, and is missing one or two images it has diagrams for, most notably 'marie' on page 43. It is really boring and there are enough ringflash shots that by the time you see the 4th one, you are ready to tear those pages out.

It lacks creativity, and the set ups are often duplicated with a different model and different photographer form a slight change in angle, so you have loads of filler. Probably a good book if you are a guy with a camera looking to be taking nudes and replicating stale images.

The manipulation pages are a waste, they tell you nothing and there are only a few of them.

5 out of 5 stars Great depth, yet easy to understand.......2005-09-01

Has a great variety of lighting situations from natural light to as many as 9 lights, most commonly 2-4. Shows use of reflectors, absorbers, soft boxes, backgrounds. Talks at the beginning of each chapter about the mood associated with each type of picture and then theorizes different means of attaining that mood. Each shot has easy to read plan and isometric diagrams of the shoot setup, and the pictures are full page and first rate. I wish all photo books were like this one! Now if only they could supply me with a source of willing models....

5 out of 5 stars Lighting the Nude by Alex Larg.......2005-07-11

Beautiful, a lot of photograps with diagrams, is worth the money I spent.
But you need to have a basic understanding of light, light manipulation and photography to take maximum advantage of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT RESOURCE........2005-01-09

This is one of those books that you'll never regret to buy. If you know the basics of photography such as how cameras and lighting work, this book is a real mind-candy to read. My tip for you using this book is to follow each session by putting yoursellf into a photographer's position who took the pictures in the book, and execute your own virtual session applying your own photographic knowledge. This will surely invoke your creativity like no other. This book won't tell you any super special secret than other books. But each case study is highly practical and honest. This giant collection of real world case studies will satisfy anybody interested in nude and studio photography.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Tips.......2007-06-14

This book provides great tips for beginners like myself.

3 out of 5 stars This is rather a photo book, not book about taking photos........2007-03-06

A said before, book consist of basically "well, i was there and i asked {ModelName} to do this, and she selected this pose, which makes this nice image" paragraphs...

So this book is collection of images with few not to detailed sentences about every shot.

I certainly expected more from this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good start but becomes repetitive........2007-02-13

The book isn't very good at really explaining how the shot was created. So if you want to learn about how or why a certain setting was used in detail, this isn't the book for you. If you want to get some good ideas of tasteful nude/portrait photos, this could be the ticket. Some of the narratives of the motivation behind the shot is helpful. However by the end of the book, you may end up disappointed that you read the whole thing. About half way through the book just skim the verbiage and enjoy the photos.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality photos, no real information.......2007-02-09

I brought this book a while back and was not happy with it, lucky for amazon I'm a lazy person when it comes to returning things, especially onine. The photos are poor, they look like someone used a compact camera to take the shot, and with no artistic or creative skill either.

There are maybe a few pictures which may be considered close to pro level but as a non pro myself I can already acheive better quality pictures. i expected more than this, there was no depth to the pictures on how they were designed or envisioned by the photographer, just a bunch of random pictures.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-01-30

A great combination of practical advice and creative insight. This book shows real talent in protraying a delicate subject matter. The use of different locations and lighting techniques shows off Mr. Lemon talent and skill. A must have for any glamour photogher's library

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2007-08-09

Every Digital Photographer should have a copy of Kevin's book. This is the book I've been waiting for... Kevin Kubota answers the questions I've been asking about digital workflow for years, his simple straight-forward language makes it easy to understand. Kevin's also willing to teach you little tricks with layers, masks and effects that will give your photos a polished look. Kevin's willingness to share his artistry & expertise is a rare find; his laid back manner in doing so makes this book well worth the price!

2 out of 5 stars Expected More..........2007-07-28

I wanted more from this book... it left me a bit disappointed. It was not very user-friendly. He barely skims the surface when explaining difficult concepts, making it hard to understand him. I was left disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to digital, but worthwhile for experienced too.......2007-03-11

This is a great book written with obvious enthusiasm for photography, but particularly digital photography. Kubota reveals all the tips and tricks you'd ever need to make the transition from film to digital, but the book is just as useful for those already on that path who might need some structure or guidance to get organised!

I found the sections on workflow to be very useful, although it does focus on one software program that not everyone will purchase. The photo effects and ideas on Photoshop actions was also excellent - it has saved me hours of time doing conversions to black & white, reducing file size for the net etc.

All in all an excellent book!

2 out of 5 stars A promotion for his PS actions..........2007-02-25

If you happen to like K. Kubotas actions - then buy them and forget about the book - really its not that much of a book but just a promoion for his Ps actions. There is a 6-7 page chapter in the book wich contains a littel image enhancement - three or four tutorials on his Ps actions. The rest - setting up PS, shooting raw ect you can read about in much better books like Martin Evenings or K. Eismanns.

5 out of 5 stars great tool!.......2007-01-04

Great book for photographers working to get a grip on Photoshop. Kevin Kubota is a known talent and teacher and does a marvelous job giving simple, easy to understand instructions and I use what I've learned from the book everyday I work in Photoshop. I've recomeded it to my fellow photographers and I bought another copy to send to my daughter who is a photographer in Australia.

Book Description

Designed for professional photographers who are already well versed in the basics of lighting, this book will take their lighting to the next level, adding the flair and refinement that can turn professional images into world-class photos. Each chapter explores a different master photographer, with a thorough analysis of signature techniques, a look at the creation of his or her top images, and a discussion of past photographs that presented lighting challenges. A virtual master class, this book presents the teachings of nearly two dozen photographers for a fraction of the price of a single photography seminar.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-08-08

I always refer to customer evaluations before deciding to buy a book and this is no different. Honestly, I have never been disappointed so far! This is a great book for all portrait photographers. It gives us a good overview of the techniques of the different masters considered to be the best there is. This is a good book! It should have been titled an overview of marter portrait photographer's techniques....grab one and you will never be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece work by Michelle--again!.......2007-04-13

Michelle takes you through the photographic lighting styles of some great photographers-this is a must buy if you'd like to look how various top photographers see lighting in different scenarios. I know, as I'm not only a Lighting Master at the annual Photo Plus Expo in New York, but I'm one of the chapters in this book.

Many photographers today spend thousands on camera bodies that change every Monday when the Board of Director's meet, yet they buy cheap lights. Hopefully this book will show you why lighting is to an image what the blood is to your body--without either, you have nothing. This is a must read for anyone interested in photography at every level.

Other great books, of course my own, Garage Glamour: Digital Nude and Beauty Photography Made Simple plus my latest, Rolando Gomez's Glamour Photography: Professional Techniques and Images and keep an eye out for Michelle's newest book coming out later this year! All the best, and remember, we're all students of photography as it's a never ending learning experience. --Rolando Gomez, contributing writer Studio Photography magazine.

3 out of 5 stars There is good info here, but buy her other book........2004-09-23

This book is the exact same as the first half of Annabel's other book Portrait and Wedding photography. That book is hardcover, (this one is not), it's much cheaper here on amazon and it also covers wedding photography as well. It is like two books in one. I think it's fair to argue that Annabel gives many tips in the wedding section that would be helpful to a portrait photographer who has no intention of covering weddings.

Otherwise this is a good book. Lots of helpful tips, but not overly technical. For those who like the technicalities, each image presented in the book is captioned with the technical details of the image (Camera, film type, lens, shutter speed & aperature).

Even so, it is a better deal to buy the hardcover combo portrait & weddings book by Annabel.

1 out of 5 stars Upset I had to pay return shipping.......2004-01-21

It is upsetting that amazon even offers this book. There is no substance here. The book lacks details, and that is what is required when needing to know how to do professional portraiture. I returned it immediately.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2003-05-27

This book was a disappointment. I feel as though I could have written this book myself. Trust me - that's not saying much. There were a few good pictures in the book, but for the most part I found the remainder to be noncaptivating. I disagree with the individual who stated that this book is, "dripping with style." If you consider "style" to be a family portrait posed in front of a rusted out building with pieces of scrap metal and pipe laying around, this book is for you!!! I'm all for "rustic," but this just looked like trash!

5 out of 5 stars Dripping With Personality and Style.......2002-04-08

I was truly surprised and impressed when I picked up this book, not expecting much initially with so many guides to portraiture available in book and magazine form, let alone all the free resources on the Internet. But the portraits here are very strong, though it should be noted that the focus is on Caucasian families, couples and small children. There is a sense of dynamism to all the images and the lighting is especially dramatic for some of the outdoor shots, yet the subjects and equipment used are not exotic at all...the author takes pains to make the reader believe they can take these shots effectively as well.

The style is conversational: Williams introduces a few basic concepts, but this is not structured as a how-to, but more in the style of "think about these things, and here are some ideas". There is structure to the discussion, as Williams talks about makeup, hairstyles, backgrounds, features, equipment, preparing the client etc. But it all feels like you can adapt any or all of her tips to produce similarly dynamic photographs...the author's tips and approaches do not feel constraining or rigid at all.

The book is light on detailed descriptions of technique and lighting, but like the best speakers and authors on the subject, Williams manages to make the reader understand and believe that technique and equipment are secondary to a creative approach and a strong rapport with the client. For each picture, there are details of the camera, lens, and film used, along with exposure information. There are also a few scattered lighting diagrams, but these are minimal.

Going from cover to cover, William's pet approaches become very clear: 35mm and Neopan 1600 for the B&W portraits, medium format (either a Mamiya or Hasselblad) and Provia 400 cross processed for the color. There is a pronounced tilt to the majority of the images, to provide a sense of motion and dynamism. Because of these choices, there are definite elements of style that may not suit everyone, notably high contrast and saturation, full body or three-quarters style portraits (rather than standard head and shoulders stuff), and a (slight) tendency toward high key images. As I favor this look personally, I have no issues, and in fact am delighted with most of what she's done in this book.

Others have commented on the lack of detail around her techniques (particularly the cross-processing, though there's a brief description of why she does it in small print on page 21 that's easy to miss), but the sense she provides is that the technical issues can be effectively managed by a good lab; however, those who want more detail will be disappointed.

Unlike many other portraiture books, there is little formal studio photography here...the emphasis is on outdoor and environmental portraiture. Even the studio settings feature mildly tricked up backgrounds for greater interest, though little in the way of foreground objects (as these would probably mess up the perspective created by her tilted compositions). The result, to my eye, is images that pop out of the book as fresh and contemporary. But the flip side is that those looking to learn more about how to do more traditionally-styled portraits with a low-key, serious approach won't be well served by this book.

I gave this book the maximum rating, because it's rare that a book inspires with a fresh approach and compels the reader to go out and try to do things the author's way, or even pay the author for their services. But this book works that way...perhaps not for everyone, but I'm highly impressed.

2 out of 5 stars Not Bad....butlacks details.......2002-03-27

I agree with the other reviewers. There are good pictures in it, but the text is not very interesting. For example, some chapters describe an event with the time next to it. That is not important if all you are interested in is what to put in the picture. The pose, the light, the background, the look, the film, the camera are all important aspects in portraiture but it does not play a major role in the book.

3 out of 5 stars this book is not for everyone.......2007-09-10

if your looking for a book to help you on your way ,forget this one ! if you dont have hassleblad or other high end equipment' forget this book, if your not already a professional forget this book ,if your using digital media , forget this book, the book however does have some good pointers and suggestions, but if avant garde photography isnt your bag,,, forget this book. i was extremely disappointed in the way it seemed to just address the already established proffessional, and last if your not interested in black white and infrared film usage forget this book!
maybe if this book was updated it would be better but that is a big maybe

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book.......2006-03-08

You must have this book and read it... you will learn something and giving ideas... I do not mind what camera they used but the measurement of lenses is very important... I searched throught out the web site... my conclusion are most of wedding photographer I counted used 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and 300mm. My attention is to shot portrait and wedding therefore I bought 50mm and my 85mm is on the way but I could not afford to buy the rest might be the wide lens and zooms

3 out of 5 stars decent, but starting to age.......2006-03-03

The imagery in this book is of a fairly high quality. The locations and scenes look believeable; nothing over-the-top and extravagent like some books show (by that I mean, obviously created by wedding photographers who shoot only for the wealthy in the best locales). The complete lack of digital is a real weak point to this book. As of the time of this review, I'm told that nearly 95% of wedding photographers shoot digital, especially starting out. Therefore the equipment suggestions, while still somewhat informative, are heavily dated (the primary emphasis on medium format, while compelling, is no longer the most efficient way to get going in the business). The images are all high quality and quite inspiring. It's a decent work, but I'll probably buy a few more wedding photography books before finding the one that does me the most good.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for the Budding Wedding Photographer.......2006-01-04

The images in this book are very inspiring. Studying the imagery alone is very educational.

A constant student of light and photography, this was my first book on Wedding Photography. After reading it, my wishlist grew to include more lenses, camera bodies and flash units. And my photo-journalistic wedding photography improved (results may vary ;)

This book will have you thinking more about contemporary, artistic and moody images to be captured on the Wedding day. You'll also begin thinking about your services and the value you can offer your clients. This book will have you thinking about adding an assistant to your list of must-haves for every Wedding job--an assistant who understands your vision and goals for the wedding day adds so much to the quality and quantity of images you can take on that day which (hopefully) is a once-in-a-lifetime event for your clients.

This book does not cover so much about Engagement photos, group formals, or the marketing of your services (although these topics are covered briefly).

I also recommend "The Best of Wedding Photography" by Bill Hurter.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most..........2005-10-25

Get this one! There are scads of average books out there on every subject in photography. Most are dry, dull and a waste of ink and paper. This one opens a window into the soul of the author (well, the photographer.. I think the actual writer was the co-author.) I have the distinct impression this is an expression of joy and enthusiasm from someone who started by doing what she loved and then slowed down long enough to write about it.
