Book Description

A comprehensive manual on the skills of Christian meditative prayer, including the history of the Rosary, the history of the devotion, the theology behind it, and its many connections to art, architecture, liturgy, and other forms of prayer. Includes a chapter on each of the fifteen Mysteries, examining them from archaeological, anthropological, textual, and other viewpoints, and a thorough explanation of the many promises conveyed by apparitions of Mary to St. Dominic and Bl. Alan de Rupe, drawn largely from the Fathers of the Church. Throughout the text, the immense spiritual and social benefits of the Rosary and of meditative prayer emerge through the stories of the great saints who re-converted England, France, Italy, and other countries by encouraging the practice.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-01-29

An absolutely fabulous book by a wonderful, witty writer...wish I could tell more people about it...nothing compares in breadth and knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every seeker of the Truth.......2003-07-26

This is an excellent book. It tells of the early history leading to the development of the rosary. A history of a people seeking a closer communion with God. The author tells a story that needs telling -- a story of heresies and misunderstandings, of the power of the rosary to draw us to the saving power of Christ. This is a story about how the rosary should be said and has been said over the course of centuries. This story is easy to read, well organized, and answers the call of the many who search for an answer to the problems besetting the Church today. It is excellent reading.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2003-05-17

I was really looking forward to this title based on the other reviews and the index which was full of saints .... What I found was very disappointing.

Although the author seems initially quite successful at building credibility with his reader - the tone is quite authoritative - not popular piety -- and the content at first glance seems well researched. But when the author mentioned that marriage is the main reason the Roman Empire fell - I started to get nervous. Marriage at best may have been one of several factors, and thats perhaps a stretch - but to assert it is the primary reason for the fall of the Roman Empire is outrageous. And worse in that it calls into question the other facts that the author presents in this work.

The meditations are also very wanting. They seem devoid of any personal touch and they are hardly suited to meditation or even a 'science of the saints' type of consideration of related virtues. The author throughout the book is long winded and seems to enjoy relaying facts irregardless of if they have any relevance to the content. For example, I'm not sure how or why a reflection on the 'agony of the garden' somehow launches into a discussion of how all competitive sports are evil.

Finally, although the list of resources seems extensive, I was disappointed overall with the selections of saints quotations used throughout the book.

Overall, I know that rosary books of any meaningful size are hard to come by (hopefully this 'year of the rosary' will change that), I'd start with 'The Rosary, The Little Summa' or 'Mystery Stories: A Journey Through the Rosary'

5 out of 5 stars Something Wonderful.......2001-09-20

I found this book to be simply wonderful. I borrowed it from the library and wanted my own copy. It can appeal to a person of any denomination since it includes early Church history, cultural history, philosophy. It gives an excellent discussion of the reasons why the Catholic Church things the way it does and the reason behind many Catholic beliefs that may seem difficult for non-Catholics.

5 out of 5 stars Rosary.......2001-01-17

This is a very detailed but clearly written work on all aspects of the Rosary. As a non-Catholic who is becoming more and more interested in the Catholic Church, I found this book very enlightening. It wiped away many of the prejudices I (as a long-time Baptist) had held toward the Church. I would recommend it to everyone, especially to those seeking a better prayer life.

    Book Description

This is the first book to introduce the fourteen joyful and highly symbolic events that make up the Via Lucis, the Christian Way of Light, an ancient spiritual tradition celebrating the post-Resurrection life of Christ on Earth.

The Stations of the Light, with its “good news” of healing and salvation, is becoming an increasingly popular devotion throughout the United States and the world, and was recognized by the Vatican in its Jubilee 2000 campaign. While Christians of all denominations are familiar with the Stations of the Cross, few know how to celebrate the Stations of the Light, a practice that came into being through inspiration from ancient Roman sources.

Stations of the Light is a clear and inspiring guide to making this ancient ritual part of contemporary Christian life. The stations mark the fourteen sacred events in the post-Easter story, from “Jesus Rises from the Dead” to “Pentecost: The Risen Lord Sends the Holy Spirit.” For each one, Mary Ford-Grabowsky presents a variety of spiritual practices that invite readers to form their own realistic and sacred image of the event. Beginning with relaxation and releasing the imagination, these exercises are designed to help convey the story and foster inspiration, and include ancient and contemporary meditations, reflections, and prayers; as well as journal writing, artwork, music, and mantras.

5 out of 5 stars "Stations of the Light" ancient practice brings fresh inspiration.......2007-08-27

This book came with me on a recent personal retreat. It uses the major events surrounding Easter, and the season immediately following the Resurrection, as the focal points for contemplation at each station. I didn't know when I packed the book that it would become a major inspiration for my time apart from the daily busyness of a Pastor's life. (God provides what we need, just when we need it most.) I had been through some extra struggles in the course of the past year, and had just been given some new challenges to face. A day apart to think and pray was desperately needed. "Stations of the Light" provided a way of looking at these challenges through the lens of God's enduring love and promise in Christ. I picked it up, thinking I might find some restful thoughts to comfort my soul, and I couldn't put it down! I found not rest, but courage for continuing the journey of faith. I was reminded that whatever new surprise life might bring, whether joyful or sorrowful, delightful or challenging, this too is of God. I entered the retreat with dozens of questions, and this book helped me focus my energy as I walked along the 14 stations of light. At the end, I knew with Julian of Norwich that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, all manner of thing shall be well." An experience of loss became for me a welcoming ground for spiritual understanding. I discovered opportunities to know myself better, to more fully live out my calling, and to better serve God and other people. I took the book back to my church and used it as the basis for a 24 hour prayer vigil for my congregation. We set up several of the stations around the outer perimeter of the sanctuary, with pictures downloaded from the web and quotes from the book as prayer-starters. It was very well-received by those who participated in the vigil. I highly recommend this book for those with contemplative souls!

5 out of 5 stars Consecration to Our Blessed Mother.......2007-07-04

For the person who is seeking the meaning of what is Consecration to Our Lady and what is the process , I would suggest that they look no further than this book. It is intended for those who are seriously considering this spiritual activity/commitment and who require explicit guidelines and a sense of being completely informed. It is in its own way a course on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Not only for Pius X.......2006-11-06

A wonderful guide to starting on the road to holiness.

Regardless of whether or not this book is held in esteem by the Society of Pius X (not opening the debate on whether or not the society is schismatic), this devotion has been accepted and recommended by the Church long before Vatican II, and has continued to be recommended by holy priests who remained under Rome after Vatican II. This is simply a complete collection of the writings that Saint Louis Marie de Montfort recommends. It is crucial that we, as Catholics, do not discourage it.

5 out of 5 stars NOT AGAINST CHURH DOCTRINE.......2006-08-19

The actual book is written by a saint according to the Catholic Church. The break away group that another review talks about are considered break away because they want to continue to hold mass in the Pre-Vatican II mode, but not because their doctrinal beliefs are wrong. In any case the actual writting is translated from St. Louis De Montfort who is still deemed as a great saint and furthermore this consecration by formula of Montfort is done and esteemed by many excellent Priests. Pope John Paul II said Montfort's Formula changed his life and started his path towards sanctity

5 out of 5 stars Most helpful devotion to go to Heaven.......2003-04-28

Human Beings ignore that every day of their life they advance toward their death and what there is after. Even if they ignore it, they head for that. And if they know that, even if they don't want it, they go toward it because God wants it and nobody can resist his will which is competent for everybody WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTION (we will see God who will tell us either: "it is well, Good servant come in the Joy of your Lord" either: "withdraw from bad servant, I don't know you").
And if we say all these things, we can't say the contrary because between two things which contradict each other, one only can be respectable and the other can be rejected: error is not respectable; it is false to think that there is nothing after death and there is no liberty in this thought (God did not ask before our birth if we wanted to live or not: it is the same thing for the death and after the death: there is no truth stronger than that). Freedom is only in truth and not in some false choices as modern man pretends.
Because the most important is to go to heaven and because all happiness on earth is nothing compared to the hapinness of Heaven. On the opposite, because misfortune of hell is very much more horrible compared to all of the most horrible misfortunes of this earth, it is very important to find a means to go to heaven. There is nothing better than the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is wonderful and powerful with God who is his Son. His Son can't stand that our Mother is insulted or offended. But he loves a lot those who love her. Because she has a great influence on her Son and because She prevented him from chastising Human Beings for their iniquities, it is the most useful, the most helpful devotion that we can have. She is so sweet, so kind that she can obtain all the things that we ask if it is conformed to the will of God who doesn't want any evil.
Dear readers, I hope that you will take care of these truths which are not invented by anybody but before we lived on this earth, they existed already and they existed before the very beginning of this world in the mind of God.
The Book of Saint louis de Montfort help to be full of them.
I hope that at the end you will go to heaven which is much less far than we think... Many Human Beings die when they don't plan it: it is a very actual fact that God comes always like a thief; today more than 5000 persons died: where are they now? Only God knows, the only holy thief. And tomorrow it will be the same thing and so on until the end of times. When will this day (terrible for sinners and sweet for those who bravely fighted on earth) happen to us? Let us be ready for this day which can be tomorrow... And the best means is the Blessed Virgin Mary. The book of Saint Louis de Montfort is very good to eliminate all the things which displease to God (only sins displease him and we sin everyday). Let God have mercy on us not only in this world where his mercy is evident but in the other world where alas very few people find it because gate which leads to Heaven is very narrow. God bless you who hear the true word of God.
It is only in his Church which is the Catholic Church that we find the Truth. The Church condamned many heresies like protestantism and many false religions where God is not the Master but arranged by Human Beings and put with other divinities: how can God stand it because he knows that he is alone and there is no several gods in Heaven but only him. Who would enjoy it in his place? It seems like scoffing at him to put divinities equal to him as they are nothing more than fiction beings in the imagination of men. Do you enjoy to be mocked? I don't think so. God doesn't enjoy either.
And for those who don't hear it, I wish from all my heart that you will convert one day before it is too late to the true faith without mixing that with any error that God hates (modern world does that all the time). Hatred of God is so strong that I don't wish you to be in its range because you will feel it alas eternally. And don't laugh for God warned us: "Misfortune to you who laugh because you will cry". But I wish you to labor in this world: "Happiness to you you cry because you will laugh" he also said.
God uses those who are crazy to confuse those who are wise. If you are wise and if I am crazy now (because these truths are crazy for the world), in the other world, I will be wise and you will be crazy, not for a short time like now but for eternity. 2000 years, it is nothing, it is not even the beginning of eternity...
Let Our Mother enlighten you, it is what I wish you from my heart of hearts because for anybody I don't wish hell. And I pray with other catholics who have the true catholic faith for you very much, dear readers. Have a true devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and you will be saved.

Catholics thinking about purchasing this book should know that it is written and published by representatives of the break-away organization the "Society of St. Piux X," that the book bears neither an Imprimatur nor Nihil Obstat from Catholic bishops, and that its contents and commentaries are not necessarily conforming to Catholic doctrine.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Creative approach to Magdalene spiritual practices.......2007-07-20

I loved this book! I found it accessible and based on good scholarship (the author graduated from Harvard Divinity School). In my view, the book is an open-hearted meditation on different aspects of Mary Magdalene in history, legend, and myth. Each chapter covers a different aspect, such as Magdalene as healer, the Gnostic Magdalene, relating to the Magdalene as the Beloved/Friend, and Magdalene as the Dark Goddess (including possible connections to the European Black Madonnas). Houston is very clear that she is offering ideas and possibilities for readers to use and modify for their own practices. She also concludes that any relationship with the Magdalene and (indeed the Divine in general) is best self-defined. While she talks about her spiritual relationship to Mary Magdalene, she never prescribes a certain way for others to approach the Magdalene. No doctrine, no dogma, no proscribed rituals, no clergy, no authorities to submit to.
The book is very consciously written for both men and women. In fact, Houston specifically addresses her readers as "women and men." Just because the subject of the book is the Magdalene and the divine feminine does not automatically exclude men, a fact that the author takes care to note.
As for the "rewritten" prayers, the fact is that many prayers and epithets of the divine descend to us from ancient times, and often have pagan roots. For example, many titles of the Virgin Mary derive from names for pagan goddesses; the Virgin Mary is often called "Stella Maris" (Star of the Sea), a title originally given to the Egyptian goddess Isis. The only "rewritten" prayer in the book is the Gnostic Rosary (the rosary, by the way, also has pagan origins). Some people will enjoy this Gnostic take on the rosary, and of course, some will not. The author lays out a wide variety of ways to relate to Magdalene--she is well aware that not all the practices will fit everyone.
As far as the author's discussion of Magdalene's possible connections to goddess of other cultures, she does so on two levels. First, she looks at the cultural and spiritual significance of the early European legends about Magdalene in light of the pre-existent pagan goddess worship. While Houston doesn't make an historical pronouncements, since good documentation doesn't exist at this time, she points out that Roman colonists established temples to Cybele and Diana (and other gods/goddesses) in England and France, and in addition, the indigenous pagan cultures (for example, the Celts) venerated goddesses of their own. Discussing Magdalene's legendary presence in France and England, and how these legends interacted with the pre-existent goddess worship is a fascinating and completely reasonable subject. Also, much scholarly debate abounds in regard to the Black Madonna statues in Roman Catholic churches, and their possible connection to Roman and Near Eastern goddesses like Isis. Since a high number of these mysterious Black Virgin statues are in regions of France where Magdalene was and still is fervently venerated, talking about Magdalene's connection to these statues is logical.
Secondly, Houston talks about Magdalene on an archetypal and mythological level. This conversation is not meant to be historical, as Houston clearly notes. It falls in the area of depth psychology and cross-cultural anthropology, such as when Houston mentions possible resonances with goddesses of other cultures.
I found this book a great resource and a springboard that helps me think about Mary Magdalene in new ways. My spiritual practice has deepened and I feel a connection with what Houston refers to as "the Magdalene Path," the spontaneous grassroots movement that is demanding the re-inclusion of the divine feminine in the West!

5 out of 5 stars Invoking Mary Magdalene.......2007-05-26

This book is an excellent guide for everyone, from the intellectually curious and to the serious spiritual practitioner. Houston gives us the background on Magdalene and then takes us step by step through many techniques and practices to strengthen our own life and consciousness.

      3 out of 5 stars Make a religion kit.......2006-11-25

I can't help but feel, after reading this, that there must be a fair number of people, particularly women, who feel alienated by or at least out of sync with traditional religion. That is probably unsurprising since most of the more traditional religions, particularly the three key relatives: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, are very paternalistic, male dominated, almost outright misogynistic, and exclusivist. I'm not quite sure a make-a-religion kit is quite the answer, however, and that is what my impression of the book was.

"Invoking Mary Magdalene" presents the reader with an introduction that is very tantalizing, because it presents the theme that literary texts and traditions associated with Jesus and Mary Magdalene have been suppressed through time by the powers-that-be in the Roman Catholic Church and also by the more jealous of the disciples of Jesus. This is very topical now, since the book and film "The De Vinci Code," which dealt with this same topic, appeared on the scene to raise public consciousness about alternative religion.

Unfortunately, Ms Houston does not stick to the literary documents and information about the subject but wanders from these facts into discussions about the divine feminine, Hecate, Sekhmet, Isis, Astarte, Ashtoreth, Aphrodite, etc. It struck me as a feminist's attempt to creat a religon by for and managed by women. But with this she has gone beyond the concept of the historic relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene to an archaic pantheon that is well past its shelf date and was ultimately passed over by the ancients themselves as unfulfilling.

I was particularly put off by the borrowed and rewritten prayers and meditations, like the Lord's Prayer and the Nicean Creed among others. Prayers and meditations arise from the spirituality of the writer and the community the reader feels with that spirituality. If it doesn't matter where they come from, one might as well recite King Akhenaton's Hymn to the Aton or solar disk.

While I could believe that a mystery religion of the type Ms Houston suggests may well have existed at the time of Christ, I'm not sure that resurrecting it will in any way improve ones spiritual life today. Certainly there were a number of mystery religions that arose to fill the needs of the civilized world during the period of the 1st century BC and that of the 1 century AD: The rituals of Demeter and Persephone for women, of Artemis of Ephesus probably also for women, those of Mithraism for military men, of Zorothustra for both genders, and probably others of which I am not even aware. All of these and Christianity as well, arose as the growth of civilization--and of education--spread more widely and left the individual of the time with a sense that both the pantheon of deities and the large body of philosophical traditions failed to meet the psychological and emotional needs--let alone the quest for answers to eternal questions like "why are we here," and "what is the meaning of life"--at the time. As one of my classics professors once said, it was a time where, if a man named Jesus Christ had not existed, a man like Jesus Christ would have arisen. The time was just right.

Maybe this could be said of Mary Magdalene and our own time, but I don't think that inner peace or answers to philosophical questions can occur just by saying the right formula of words or performing a set of rituals selected ad hoc from a book. It takes reading and contemplation, probably things the author has herself done in order to write the book. But so far as I'm aware, there is no way to achieve spirituality but by hard work and personal growth. If this book helps you do that, fine, go for it. It didn't do anything for me.

5 out of 5 stars A spiritual book and audio CD guide to invoking the sacredness of Mary Magdalene.......2006-09-03

Invoking Mary Magdalene: Accessing The Wisdom Of The Divine Feminine is a spiritual book and audio CD guide to invoking the sacredness of Mary Magdalene, who is mentioned in the New Testament more than any other woman. Chapters include a Magdalene litany for turning oneself over to become a vessel for Divine Feminine grace, teachings on enlightenment Jesus is said to have imparted to Magdalene alone, a guide to creating one's personal shrine to Mary Magdalene, and much more. Written by a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Invoking Mary Magdalene is a profound, reverent, and respectful guide to expressing faith and paying homage. The sessions on the accompanying CD are Guided Visualization to the Cave of Baume (11:45), The Holy Gnostic Rosary (31:37), Union with the Holy Bride (13:00), Magdalene as Grail Guardian and Queen of Shadows Meditation (9:47), and Prayer of Archangelic Protection (0:52).

4 out of 5 stars I loved this book, but..........2006-08-23

This book contains some very solid, practical ways of starting up a spiritual practice devoted to the Magdalene. Unfortunately I could not get past the whole "let's throw Kali, Sekhmet, Hecate, and the Magdalene into a blender!" concept that she tries to sell. None of these goddesses have a thing in common with the Magdalene except maybe their gender. I would've loved to have seen some genuine cross comparisons and rituals between her and very similar goddesses who are equally as popular, and would've made far more sense to include: Isis, Astarte, Aphrodite, Ishtar, and Inanna are just a few I can rattle off the top of my head. I think that she is trying to market this book for the type of person who would be much happier picking up a book on Teen Wicca. Nonetheless, this book has a lot of excellent ideas in it and I found that the information included was just what I was looking for--when I ignored all of the "dark godddess" nonsense, that is.

5 out of 5 stars Great daily meditation book!.......2006-11-06

This is a wonderful daily meditation book. We have ordered several copies and read it every day. It has quotes from Mary's messages to the visionaries at Medjugorje along with bible quotes and commentary by the author, Fr. Beyer. Our entire family finds these messages very uplifting and inspirational. We feel so close to Our Lady, so guided and protected, as if she were speaking directly to us. We highly recommend this book to anyone seeking daily spiritual guidance.

This is a great book. The one review that is negative is about the truth of the apparitions. That person fails to point out Pope John Paul II (the great) rejected the local bishops negative statement not once but 3 times. Who do you trust the Pope of the Century or some locals who got their egos involved and Unity publishing who is in gross error (Satan is strong Our Lady tells us.) I say the Medjugorje apparitions are REAL and I discerned arduously. I had help from above. This book gives Our Lady's messages in a bite size presentation. She is calling us to Holiness for the last time so we should read these messages seriously and do what Our Lady is saying which by the way is biblical and even just common sense. Stop sinning and start living charity toward our neighbor even when it hurts she says. The apparitions are real and I should add this is not the end of the world but Our Lady will no longer have to appear in her transfigured body to give advice through seers. The world is going to change radically to the good, Thanks be to God, after the chastisements and the miraculous sign on Cross Mountain. So read the book and LIVE THE MESSAGES as the Mother of Jesus has asked us to do, Oh so politely. As a mother would ask. But dad is coming home from work and the belt is next it appears especially for those who don't read and heed the messages which by the way are found in every bible. She is calling us to prayer and fasting, as she did at Fatima to "soften the belt" the Father will inflict on us for our sinful disobedience and lack of love toward neighbor and to change us into being like her son so that our joy will be abundant.....the eternal life in Heaven.

1 out of 5 stars There are issues with this book........2004-04-05

I bought this book when I still believed that the apparitions in Medjugorje were true.

I think that this book contains lies. For example this book gives the story of an American farmer who spends everyday 5 minutes at church. One day he gets sick and Jesus comes to visit him. In the French version of a book by Sister Emmanuel, "Medjugorje, the 90's", there is almost EXACTLY the same story, but in her case it is a homeless man in Paris. Almost all the details are the same! My guess is that someone in the Medjugorje team made up this story that was used and adapted for different languages and countries. I would not trust any word from this book or from other Medjugorje books.

The apparitions of Medjugorje have been condemned by both Msgr Zanic and his successor Msgr Peric, bishops of Mostar, who have authority over Medjugorje.
I really recommend to take the challenge of learning more about the hidden side of Medjugorje by reading as many articles as possible.(...)

and always puts me in touch with Our Lady and her wonderful messages from Medjugorje. I was afraid I'd lose the spirit of Medjugorje when I came back to my job and responsibilities, but this book, that I read every morning and evening, keeps me in touch with that spirit and the constant smile and love of the Blessed Virgin.

5 out of 5 stars St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection.......2001-12-02

The monks of the middle ages can be heard singing Ave Maria, Ave Maria from the glossy, A. Joseph Barrish, S. M. illustrated pages of the St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection. Barrish, working with Schoenstatt Sister of Mary, M. Jean Frisk, has created a brilliant reminiscence of the time of incense and flowers in the Roman Catholic Church. Frisk, who holds a masters in Theology with Marian Concentration and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, gives us legends and meditations to ponder as we look at Barrish's stunning, full-page illustrations of dozens of flowers that bear a name or a mythical relationship to the Mother of Christ.
This selection leads us through our shared Christian spirituality in the natural beauty around us through a history of flower legends and names using flowers of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Flight into Egypt, Maternity of Mary, Mary as Homemaker, Mary at the Cross, and Devotion Rewarded.
Among the legends told in mystery plays of the medieval times is that of Madelon who having nothing to give the Babe Jesus was led by the Angel Gabriel to roses blooming at the girl's feet. "The French poet, Emile Blemont, ended his story of Madelon with this quotation: Though thou art poor and hast no gold to bring, Though ice-bound earth no Heaven-sent flowers bestows, Yet give thy heart this Noel to thy King. This is the Legend of the Christmas Rose." (p. 48)
In addition to an excellent appendix, index, and bibliography of gardens and plant listings, this book also is a personal Mary Garden planner. Just in time for Chistmas gift exchanges to allow you to give more knowledge of Faith in a vibrant, beautiful, and interesting way. This quality publication gives artistically, as Christian art has, to those who enjoy studying the nobility of the world around them, as well as to those who plant gardens! Mary's Flowers was a keeper from the time I opened the box. The cover drew me to the book, and as I skipped through the pages I knew for once in my life I had to begin on page one and continue.........not my usual way......I begin in the back........the drawings are magnificent, the stories fascinating and the relativity between the flowers and the Blessed Virgin truly inspiring. The book is one of the highlights of my collection. I only wish I had written it.... JoKay Miltenberger Arcanum OH

      Book Description

A companion to Mary Carruthers' earlier study of memory in medieval culture, The Book of Memory, this book, The Craft of Thought, examines medieval monastic meditation as a discipline for making thoughts, and discusses its influence on literature, art, and architecture, deriving examples from a variety of late antique and medieval sources, with excursions into modern architectural memorials. The study emphasizes meditation as an act of literary composition or invention, the techniques of which notably involved both words and making mental "pictures" for thinking and composing.

4 out of 5 stars Cultivating Mental Expertise.......2005-07-28

This interesting but challenging book examines the disciplined mental habits of Christian monks in the period from late antiquity to the early middle ages. Christian monastic traditions evolved in a world quite alien to modern sensibilities. The monasteries themselves were isolated and insular. Daily life was austere and focused on paying homage to God through meditative prayer. Over time, the monks developed a meditative technology that included memory skills, emotional control, and creative expression. These practices are what Professor Carruthers means by The Craft of Thought, and she does an admirable job of helping moderns appreciate the accomplishments of these diligent and inventive ancients.

The book argues that monastic practices were rhetorical devices that lead their followers step by step to a point where they were able to meditate in ways that illuminated the canonical teachings of their faith. Her point that cultural practices can serve rhetorical functions is well illustrated in the book.

The monks were highly disciplined. They developed specialized memory techniques and applied them to learning scriptures. They were skillful in creating and recalling visual images. Meditation put these skills and others in play. First the monk established facilitating conditions - prostrating oneself while weeping, for example - then he recalled scriptures and used them to devise new visions to better capture the glory of God.

The book was a difficult read for me because of my weak background in medieval studies. Professor Carruthers wrote primarily for her colleagues in this area, and so she omitted contextual and historical background information. I also found the organization of her chapters somewhat loose so that the various bits and pieces did not always come together for me. However, overall I was pleased with the book. It gave me a learned scholar's insights into the cognitive techniques of medieval monastic life.
