5 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes of Media Programming.......2006-01-28

This is a very solid job at describing a constantly moving target. The authors (the first and third are at California State University-Fullerton, while Brian Gross teaches out in Jakarta and has enjoyed extensive experience in all three media) help to bring ever more important Internet content into the media mainstream with their treatment. Chapters cover the history of programming in all three services (and related areas such as video games), sources of television programming, sources of radio and Internet content, development of content for each of the three, testing of audience reactions, elements of successful programming, factors influencing television programming, factors impacting radio and Internet content, scheduling strategies for each of these services, program evaluation, changing and canceling programs, and ethical issues. The book is more descriptive than critical in approach, and helps readers get behind the scenes to better understand the players and process.

Thank goodness this classic book has come back into print! Though The Technique of Film Editing has not been revised since 1968, it is still the single most comprehensive and engaging volume on film editing. Karel Reisz and Gavin Millar introduce readers to every aspect of the editor's craft. They provide a concise history of editing and describe editing style as it applies to every genre of moviemaking, including the many types of narrative and documentary films. The particular demands of wide-screen filmmaking, cinema vérité, and the avant-garde are also covered. Reisz and Millar's account of the differences between smooth and abrupt editing and their remarkable sense of editing for dramatic effect rather than for realism make this book an essential for apprentice editors, as well as for those who want to know how filmmakers understand their work.

Book Description

First published in 1953, the original English version of the book was reprinted 13 times without a word being changed and in translation it has become the standard work on the subject in the Spanish Czech, Polish and Russian languages.

In 1968 the original text was reprinted as it stood, as it was felt that any attempt to revise or reinterpret it could only blur its spirit. the second edition has now also reprinted 13 times. On publication the film director Anthony Asquith said `this book is an absolute must not only for film technicians but for every intelligent filmgoer' and more recently i has been said that `it is probably the most successful film textbook in English, and has had a great influence on the technique of the cinema.' By
reisuing this book, unchanged apart from the new cover and slightly larger format, we hope that a new generation of aspiring film editors will continue to derive much pleasure from this classic text and, moreover, it will treble their enjoyment of every visit to the cinema.' Film director, Anthony Asquith `All who are creatively and written and compiled by Karl Reisz, with the help of some of the finest brains in British film production must become a standard work.' Film producer,
Michael Balcon.

Bible of Film Editing
from an editor and editing professor-
editors must have it- simple as that-- would be wise for other filmmakers to read too

5 out of 5 stars comprehensive fantastic.......2005-09-01

I found an old copy in a library and searched this out. I bought the hardcover one on amazon cheaply. It has been revised for so long you may as well buy the old. it's not just about editing and goes through how to sequence shots for action (a chase) etc, goes through some citizen kane shots. Has quite a few pictures of sequences and other stuff. I highly recommend it. It's a massive book.

5 out of 5 stars Want to make films? Read this book!.......1997-11-24

First you have to find it. Incidentally, I am sure it is not extremely difficult to find, for I happen to have found it accidentally in a film book store in Hollywood. Needless to say this book provides any potential film maker with an exciting view of the craft, turning mechanics into art. It is written in a clear style and in an almost profound way it will change the way you understand cinema and editing. Reisz and Millar will teach you how to turn the art of film into film art.

4 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide and not just for compositors.......2007-07-08

If you've ever been on set and heard the catchphrase "fix it in post" this book is for you.

Not only is the information detailed and thorough, but also extremely readable. Some ironic asides demonstrate Wright has the experience to back up his text. He covers all levels of compositing, from basic luminance keying to green-screen/blue-screen, to color corection and matching foreground and background elements, motion tracking, alpha-channels (to premultiply or not premultiply) and the differences between film and video.

The book is not software specific, and the enclosed exercises and demonstrations can be done on most software with compositing features -- including Photoshop!

Why four stars and not five? The extra money demanded for addional exercises seems to be an unfair gouge. But the book is definitely worth the cover price! Even if you have no immediate aspirations at all to composite something, you'll at least see just how tough it can be.

Producers, Directors and Camera departments (aspiring or experienced) can all learn something here -- and with any luck they'll learn it before they light their next green/blue screen.

Too bad the cover is so damn ugly.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-08

I bought it based on the first Edition and I wasn't wrong.
Its even better.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-05-13

This is a very complete and engaging book.
It's generic enough so that you can learn a lot regardless of your software/manual tools;
But it focuses enough on certain programs, that it is still useful for those specific users as well.
It was a gift for a relative, but I spent a few hours reading before giving it away...

5 out of 5 stars A must have for your VFX library.......2007-01-05

If you're new to the effect industry or a seasoned pro this is still the bible for understanding what is happening under the hood of a compositing software. This is not software specific, but be it 'Shake' or 'an other' this will help you truly understand the what, when and why.

This book together with - Ron Brinkman's 'The Art and Science of Digital Compositing' - also available at Amazon, will hold you in good stead throughout your career.

It truly gives you the 'wow' factor.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-12-15

Even advanced compositors will glean juicy bits from Steve Wrights' effort. I've read all the standard texts and this one stands with the best. Clear, friendly prose makes this book a comfortable read; read it two or three times and you'll find that you get a little something out of it on each pass. Whether your work end up in print, video or film, this is a must-have book.

5 out of 5 stars a good Book for discover the tricks!!.......2007-01-09

5 out of 5 stars Thank God Somone's Listening!!.......2006-03-17

Tired of the usual "Blah, Blah, Blah" in computer books? FINALLY - somone is listening to the needs of graphics professionals and students wanting to learn tips and tricks for doing these effects and animations! Foster not only shows you HOW to do these techniques, but more importantly, WHY! I have found this book indespensible in my advancement way beyond the basic tools and functional training of other After Effects books. If you want to learn animation or do any kind of special effects on your own, then get this book NOW!

5 out of 5 stars extremely useful.......2006-03-06

have bought many books on after effect and photoshop.
This is so far the best ever. Easy to use, easy to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the complete beginner..........2005-12-21

I have to say that you MUST need a solid undertanding or at least the basics of After Effects before getting this book. Also, there are not many figures to ilustrate the projects in an easy way.
Get the book if you have good knoledge of After Effects.

3 out of 5 stars Book Could have been SOOOO Good............2005-10-11

This book seemed to cover all the topics I wanted to get me in to being able to doing some of the things that I wanted to do right away with 3-D photo montages and working in 3-D space with AE and Photoshop but the book skips far too many steps and assumes you can read minds and know the "in-between" steps to get from one set of instructions to the next. I would not recommend this book to any one who does not have a very good grasp of AE. If you know AE very well then this may be the book for you. As for me I guess I'll just have to go back to my Total Training DVD's but I was hoping to get up and running a little quicker.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Behind the attitude, there is a lot to learn here.......2007-09-29

As mentioned, Mr. Yewdall really knows his stuff, and the personal approach is unique and highly effective. It's rare to see a subject like this tackled in such a personal manner, and on that level it works.

However, as a "read" it has its problems. It is extremely lenghty, the writing is at times long-winded, and much of the information is unnecessary. The Pro Tools chapter should probably be removed entirely as it shows a lack of real awareness of how the system is being used by professional operators. (and it really doesn't seem to be his strength anyway.)

More troubling for me was the attitude. He has quite an ego, and his anti-intellectualism is not a positive influence, not for those practicing sound arts nor those who work with them (producers, directors, editors). In many ways, his book is geared toward all practitioners in film, and I fear that his attitude reinforces the perception many people have of the bitter sound guy.

However, while I found that aspect tiring, there's no denying that this is easily the most revealing book on audio for film I've found. If you want an in-depth look at the nuts and bolts process of film sound, you'll definitely learn a great deal in Mr. Yewdall's book.

4 out of 5 stars The Practical Politics of Motion Picture Sound.......2007-08-03

This is the first book I've read on the specific topic of sound for films. I saw this listed on the Berkely School of Music website as a listed text book, so I figured if it's good enough for them....
There's a lot of great technical tips on many aspects of sound recording, from on-camera dialog, sound effects in the field, foley stage, to editing both linear and non-linear. The only thing less touched on was some techniques on the final mix of a soundtrack, even though the process of it was covered.
This book would be better for someone who's getting ready to enter the professional field, or just starting as tons of politics are discussed which at points made some chapters seems like an E! Entertainment report. Funny, but a little overkill for someone not in "the business".
Lastly, I would have liked to hear more about the mistakes the author made and how he learned from them, with solutions and the problem solving techniques used. Most references are on how everyone else made the mistake of not listening to the author, which comes across a little snooty, but I get the point. Good basic tips and setup for using ProTools as well. If you don't mind all the politics, and camera talk, then this will be a great read and learning expierence.

3 out of 5 stars This book needs a new edition!.......2007-06-05

There's a lot of really good stuff in here - clear, concise, and helpful, even if the author is a little hubristic at times. Sadly, all of the information dealing with computer-based audio is at least ten years old: the author mentions applications like Sound Designer and the 'Audio Media III' hardware card, which went out with beige Macs.

5 out of 5 stars Untold Secrets of Cinema Sound.......2005-02-27

Mr. Yewdall, the author, puts his long time experience into this book. Avoiding pitfalls with producers to working with budgetary constraints while producing academy award winning sound is probably the main emphasis of this book. The CD that comes with it is quite valuable, containing sample audio clips to demonstrates the author's points at various times. This book will save you atleast 2 years of experience in motion picture sound. It's worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of sound for films.......2001-04-28

I found the book very entertaining to read, Yewdall tells many personal stories which he uses to illustrate points. In fact, I read it more like a novel. He passes his knowledge, and experience to the reader through stories of things he's done, and has seen in his many years recording, producing and creating sound for motion pictures. Some is fact, some is opinion, but his opinions are clear and are backed-up with his own unique style of logic.

There are also more technical areas of the book that cover topics like mic placement, how to record cars/explosions/dialogue, how to catalogue your own sound effects libary, etc. This book would also be useful to directors and producers who want better sound in their films. There's definately lots to learn about sound, and the author has done a good job giving the reader an idea about what motion picture sound is all about.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2007-03-13

Whether a practitioner of the craft or someone who enjoys viewing non-fiction films, Documentary Storytelling is an invaluable resource. Sheila Curran Bernard's award-winning experience in the genre shines in this extremely practical book. From casting to treatments to editing, Bernard covers all the basics in great detail. But what distinguishes this book is her dedication to storytelling, a concept often lost with the technical wizardry available at our fingertips. Bernard's breakdown of the three-act structure and comparison of the narrative spine to a train offer wonderful lessons for novices and reminders for experienced filmmakers. Her analysis of existing documentaries illuminates the three-act structure. Bernard's main points are reinforced at the end of the book, thanks to a series of interviews she conducted with experienced documentarians. The reader is left with a practical how-to guide to make documentaries, as well as the critical skills to analyze non-fiction films.

In short, Documentary Storytelling is a must for students and anyone who wishes to engage in documentaries!

    5 out of 5 stars a rarified gem.......2007-06-07

....the first book to make sense of it all...where to put the camera...how to stage the scene...how to help actors find the performance...it teaches these things as much as any book can, and will save you the cost of one third of film school

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2007-03-27

This book is filled with valuable and helpful information for budding directors. I'm currently in the process of putting everything in this book to good use. The thing I like about this book is that it's not just one of those books that says you need to storyboard everything, because unless you have good drawing skills that really isn't feasible. The book gives an in depth look on how to pre-plan your film shot by shot and the use of floor plans to illustrate camera set-up's. It's so simple, but this is the type of thing that will make you prepared when you come to shoot, instead of just winging it.

4 out of 5 stars practical approach to dramatic direction.......2007-02-06

For an aspiring film or video director interested in analyzing scripts for dramatic elements and then planning the staging for the camera, this book is an outstanding introduction. It gives both a general overview of the process and then analyzes several scenes from famous films. its emphasis is on the dramatic content first, then the visual. It is not strong in the area of shot planning, storyboarding, or complex shot design sometimes seen in modern films. And it does not deal with subtle editing effects. But it is a good introduction to classic film direction and presented in a classroom style. Someone with a strong interest in film drama, from a viewer's point of view, might also find this book interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars A closer look.......2006-11-10

This book pulls no punches on the minute technical details that go unnoticed but not unexperienced in the director's craft. It's like taking a great class in the technical structure of directing. I haven't had this much fun reading a film book in a long time.

    5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down!.......2002-03-08

The author intelligently and thoroughly guides you step-by-step through the directing process. I learned a lot by his scene analyses of a few popular films. Great book, very much worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Author knows what he is speaking about.......2007-07-22

The book covers comprehensive topics about its subject: from psychoacoustics to (for example) sound editing techniques to (for example) film sound synchronization methods to (in the last chapter) dynamic range for various media for master prints. First that comes to mind when I remember the accompanying CD is the demonstrations of various microphone directivity patterns (but there is something more in it).

The topics aren't discussed in very deep levels (but are good enough), but are reinforced with author's wide experience I would like to admit (examples how the sound was worked out are taken from such films as "Jurassic Park", "Star Wars"). I found this book very interesting as I didn't know very much about film sound techniques, for specialists this book is of lower interest I think (although it contains some handy material, e.g. comparisons of various sound recording formats, etc.)

Contains some errata, but I cannot find it right now.

    5 out of 5 stars 1 of 3 great books on film/video sound.......2005-12-28

This is an excellent book though it contains many errors in the mathematics of decibels. The other 2 greats books are: Audio in Media by Stanley R. Alten and Sound for Picture by Tom Kenny.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Intro you will ever have.......2002-04-13

An easy to read, logical guide to practical production sound. If you only ever read one book on audio this should be it.

    2 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2001-12-16

Should bore the socks off you if you have a pulse.

5 out of 5 stars Probably One of The Best Books about Sound.......2000-12-28

This is an amazing book. It contains every aspects of Film TV Sound in depth (including newest techonologies like Surround stuff) and it is easy to understand. The CD is not what you expect from this book but anyway it is useful.
