Great basic book to get you started .......2007-09-27
I found this book to be helpful in some areas and lacking in other but I did learn quiet a few helful tips on photographing children. The most important thing and it is covered throughout the book is lighting. It talks about where to take pictures and at what time of day is best. This book focuses mainly on outdoor or inside pictures with natural light and touches here and there on artificial,it would have been nice to have a little more on artificial lighting though. There are so many examples of pictures the author has taken so you will know exactly what she is talking about and gives you lots of ideas for portraits and what type of angle/frame is best for different age groups, everything is explained very clearly. I really enjoyed reading this book and I feel that it has truly helped to improve my photography skills.
Good, but basic.......2007-05-31
I bought this book expecting more than what it was. Perhaps it was my fault for not spending more time researching before I bought a book, but whatever the case, I still think this book was slightly lacking. It was a very quick read with many common sense ideas which could be found easily by reading articles on the internet.
If you're just starting out with any type of photography, this may be helpful to you. If you've been taking informal pictures for awhile, you will likely already know most of this information.
I've learned alot..........2007-05-14
This book has been very informative and the images help explain what the author is saying. I'm very much a visual learner and this book has been enjoyable to read and I think it's improved my photography skills. Wish I'd had it with my first baby instead of 5th but I guess it's never too late to learn new things.
Buy it BEFORE you have a child!.......2007-04-10
This is truly a great book that gives you a ton of good advice without overwhelming you with all the terminology! Be sure you buy this book before you expect to photograph children, if possible (when you're still expecting a baby, for example). I bought this book when my baby turned 10 months, so two things happened:
1. By now, I've been trying to figure out how to take better pictures for so long that I stumbled upon some solutions on my own, and found some advice in shorter guides available online. I could have learned as much and more from this book in just 3 days had I purchased it earlier. Now, some of the stuff in the book seems repetitive to me, but I'm hoping to have my husband read it and start taking better pictures as well, so that it's not always Daddy and the baby in all the pictures.
2. While I was learning all the tricks on my own, I missed dozens of golden opportunities. It might sound funny coming from someone who shot thousands of pictures already, but I get very upset looking at my baby's first weeks and seeing all the mistakes I made and chances I missed.
So, once again - great book, get it early!
Well done!.......2006-03-25
A great little book that takes all the mystery out of taking photos of your baby or child. Step-by-step instructions, how to avoid common pitfalls, and LOTS of top-notch illustrations to show before-and-after comparisons and how-to's. If you are a parent or a photographer bent on taking world-class photos of the little ones, this book is a must-have. Michel Heron couldn't make it any clearer or more simple. I wish I had this book 20 years ago when my son was a little guy!

Hints for Capturing Childhood.......2003-09-17
Photographing children is both a joy and a challenge. The innocence and vitality of children make them ideal subjects, but more often than not, children have too much energy to sit still in front of a camera for too long. Jonathan Hilton's book on photographing children can be of great assistance, especially for people who want original looking photos of quality, rather than simply a snapshot. His book offers tips on posing, lighting, taking formal photographs, candid, and special occasion photos. He also handles challenges such as costumes, the use of props, and best capturing children in their natural state as children. He also includes tips on intergenerational photography. To illustrate his points, Hilton includes the work of many other photographers, most of whom are professionals in England. Personal favorites include the work of Juliet Greene, Majken Kruse, Robin Dance, and the exquisite black and white photography of Belgian photographer Georges-Charles Vanryk
Digital photographers will not find specific information about equipment as film photographers will, but the ideas of this book will give inspiration to any camera enthusiast.
A lot of practical information about photographing children.......2000-01-07
This not very big book (about 150 p) has a lot of practical information about photographing children - childreen moods and how to deal with them, photographing different generations, single child and groups of children, use of various light sources indoors and outdoors and so on. There is a lot of good photographs of children illustrating all chapters.
This book is not for the total beginner in photography - it does not say much about how to photograph but it focuses more on what to pay attention when you photograph children.
Some nice photographs but little technical information........1999-02-06
I was disappointed that this book never delved into the guts of photography- the film. Some of the pictures are beautiful and the editors offer type of camera and lens used but that's all the information there is. Nothing about lighting, posing, processing, etc. I was hoping for something more informative.

Finally a Great Book on Photographing Children.......2007-06-17
Cheryl Machat's sensitivity and unique perspective are wonderfully apparent in this collection of photography lessons. This book is from an artist for an artist. Machat, with technical perfection and a soft heart, sees kids. The pictures are raw and the children are real. This book may not appeal to the frightened beginner who wants/needs to doll-up kids, but parents and artist are going to love it. Check out her work at Cherylmachatdorskind.com. Unbelievable!
Just plain bad.......2006-08-19
I will admit that the text is not bad. There is some good advice on every aspect of photographing children. However, what is bad about this book is that the photographs are just horrible. Compositions are poor, lighting is poor, focus is poor. If you are looking to learn a lot about photographing children, you really won't from this book.

Good for Beginners.......2005-09-07
I am a fledging photographer/hobbist and I gained some very good ideas about lighting and arrangements for portraits. I cannot tell you what should be a standard, but for a fairly new photographer, this book helped.
I didn't care for this book.......2003-04-15
This book is somewhat lacking for me. It didn't have anything specific about children photography. I do not really recommend this book if you have books on basic lighting, posing, or other specific area of photography because that's all this book covers. Keep your money and purchase some other book on photography children.
Very Good Book!.......2000-10-24
This book was very helpful to me! Mr. Box not only shows how to set up lights, background, and camera for the picture, he also tells how to talk to children and get them relaxed to take pictures. I love to photograph children, and it's very difficult to get many children to look natural in a pose. Mr. Box gives suggestions on how to get the child to pose naturally, and how to get a beautiful picture that shows the child's personality. His tips on lights and lighting were very helpful to me. This is the best book on child photography that I've read so far.
Professional Secrets for Photographing Children.......2000-07-04
The most inspirational photography book I have read. This book is the manual for all photographers who desire to create heirloom style portraits of children instead of the standard studio shots. Doug has filled the book full of photographs and the necessary information to produce such lovely imagery. Through out the book, Doug has included helpful hints on how to get the results you want while working with children. This book will be a reference of mine for years to come.

Book Description
While color photography is the expected style for children's portraiture, this book teaches photographers the skills they need to create highly marketable black-and-white portraits of children. Guidance is provided for seeking out locations and props that are the most amenable to black-and-white portraiture of children-from portraits with siblings on the beach to a child alone with a treasured toy. Tried-and-true secrets are given for getting kids to behave, while also making sure that the children are having a good time-crucial for capturing those PRICEless expressions that set every child apart from the crowd.

INAPPROPRIATE FOR THOSE WHO LIVE NEAR THE BEACH.......2004-08-02
I FOUND THIS BOOK INAPPROPRIATE FOR BRAZILIAN PEOPLE BECAUSE WE HAVE BEACHES ALL THROUGH OUR COUNTRY. EVERYONE TAKES PHOTOS ON THE BEACH ALL THE TIME. NO ONE WOULD PAY A PROFESSIONAL STUDIO PHOTOGRAFER FOR THE KIND OF PORTRAITS SHE MAKES.
ALL HER LOCATIONS AND CHOTHING ARE EQUAL AND SHE SEEMED A BIT CONTRADITORY. SHE SAYS SHE DISLIKES HIGH KEY PORTRAITS AND THAT HER HUSBAND AND SON NEVER WEAR WHITE. ALMOST ALL HER PORTRAITS SHOWN IN THIS BOOK ARE HIGH KEY AND SHE ALSO INCLUDED A PORTRAIT OF HER SON IN A WHITE SHIRT ON THE SAND.
Photographing Children in Black & White.......2002-08-05
I did not like this book at all. I'm a beginner and I'm trying to learn everything I can. I felt as though I didn't learn anything from this book. I wasn't too impressed with the photos. I would not recommend this book. I had a professional photographer review the book and she agreed with me.
Enjoyable.......2001-06-13
Helen Boursier made her artistic talent shine. Her book was practical and inspiring. Her photographs are wonderful in how they depict the childs personality without intimidating the reader. Her work and words were inspiring. One of the best photography books I've read.
Photographing Children in Black & White.......2000-10-03
I found this book to be extremely helpful in many ways. From dealing with film selection to "getting parents to step aside", each chapter has multiple ideas regarding photographing children. I was especially pleased with the sections on lighting, groups and adding family pets to the portraits. Also, the photography included in the book is inspiring. I consider this to be a great resource for amateur photographers and a terrific idea book for the professionals.
Children Painted in Black and White.......2000-09-22
"Photographing Children in Black and White" was a pure joy in everyway as the author describes in detail all aspects of a shoot. The fine documented prints in the book illustrate her ability to capture not only the child's physical qualities, but also their unmistakable personality. From the beginning of the book, the author shows her true love for children and the relationship of each of her "shooters" and how they come to life in the pages, whether on a sandy beach at dusk, or in the surf at high tide. The chapters explain everything from what film speed and film works best in certain situations to what clothing the subjects should wear for a shoot. Although technical in nature, the writing was easily understood by myself, a somewhat novice in the field.
I would recommend this book for anyone that wants to learn to all aspects of children's photography. The author's prints tell much more than the book on her creative gift of capturing a treasure of paper...the simple face of a child.

Not what I was hoping for..........2005-07-02
I was disappointed when I got this book. If you are a beginner, than this would be a decent book for you. It does offer good beginners tips and information. If you are looking for inspiring children's photography or great new tips, look somewhere else.
Decent pictures and ideas, but nothing great.......2004-01-02
After reading the book from cover-to-cover and analyzing the pictures, I agree with kiraras: many (or most) of the pictures are of what NOT to do. If you want a better alternative, go to a website that teaches composition techniques and take a bunch of pictures of your son or daughter. If you get the book, compare your shots with Vic's, and I'm sure your photos will be just as good (assuming you can afford a non-point&shoot). The picture on the front of the book is excellent, perhaps the best. Follow the 'Look inside this book' link and see what's on the first few pages; that's as good as it gets: good pictures, not great. If you want 'great' or are a non-studio photographer, this book may not be of much use. However, if you're not good working with kids when photographing, this book may provide you with some valuable information, but nothing outstanding.
Lots of information!.......2003-10-17
I bought this book looking for the author's credibility online and I couldn't be happier.
The book shows information concerning how to select equipment, to deal with children, improve lighting skills, how to choose a good lab, films, making proofs, etc.
It also has lots of inspiring pictures of children.
If not the best, one of the best books I have ever read.Iam proud to own it.
If you want to choose one book on photographing children among many, I vote for this.
Very good book.......2003-04-15
This book is very good. It is complete to the point of ideas on how to get the attention of children of different ages and how to help them smile and relax. The author covers just about every issue concerning photographing children.
This book is good for beginners and experienced photographers because it has many ideas. Beginners will not get overwhelmed with photography jargon, and experienced photographers will get an insight on thinking like a child and dealing with them and the parents. I recommend this book for every child photographer.
Excellent for artists.......2002-12-18
I am a professional children's photographer who was looking for some fresh poses and ideas, and I definitely found those in Orenstein's book. The photos are non-traditional and full of life and movement, but you can bet that almost every last one was a seller -- and probably at a higher price than a boring department store portrait. It's full of great ideas for showcasing a child's personality and developing a creative, personal, SELLABLE style.
I read the reviews before I bought it, and I have to say that the photos are great examples of how you need to learn "Photo Class 101" rules, and then break them. If you are interested in "mall photo mill", standard studio stock shots of kids with tired props in front of fake-looking backgrounds, look elsewhere. But if you want to be more than just a point-and-shoot photographer, Orenstein's book is for you. I would highly recommend it to all those who are just starting out in this fun but often frustrating field.
