Book Description
very woman who's had a baby knows how difficult it is to take off the extra weight, despite those unrealistic articles promising that you'll be back into your pre-pregnancy clothes within six weeks. Postpartum dieting can actually add weight and slow down the metabolism, making it virtually impossible to shed those stubborn pounds. Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell-After Pregnancy shows women why it's so difficult to lose the weight quickly, and why, if women don't adopt a sensible eating and exercise plan (as opposed to crash dieting), they will probably never take off the extra pounds. Whether you had a baby five days ago, or five years ago, bestselling author Debra Waterhouse shows women how to shed those hard-to-budge post-partum pounds, sensibly and healthfully.
Customer Reviews:
Depressing and discouraging!.......2007-04-27
I hated this book! I found the author's cutesy vocabulary and lighthearted "oh well" attitude in response to quite possibly never getting my body back to be nothing less than infuriating. Her description of waving a little white flag to 30 billion fat cells, and how they "protect their precious goldmine of fat" oblivious to months of exercise, and increasingly more stubborn with dieting, is obnoxious as it is frustrating.
I felt that she was telling me certain goals are hopeless and that the only way to cope was to throw away my old clothes.
I know that isn't true because (it was a tight fit), but I wore them home from the hospital! And I know I can improve from there.
Don't listen to her! You can do it!
I found that "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" was much more liberating, and will help me prepare for life and possible pregnancies down the road.
Awesome Book!.......2006-08-26
This book is perfect for the mother that wants to lose weight the HEALTHY way. No gimicky diets. Debra Waterhouse really helps you accept your post-pregnancy body and love it for the healthy baby it produced. She doesn't just focus on losing the weight, but regaining a new appreciation for your body and your self. The author doesn't make you feel guilty or build up unrealistic goals. I just had my son 3 months ago and picked up this book for a healthy way to lose the baby fat. After reading it and starting on Debra's PEACE plan, I have a new love of my body and am beginning to have a healthy relationship with food.
Very Informitive.......2005-09-19
This book was very informitive and helpful in understanding what the average woman's body goes through after pregnancy. I was surprised that it takes so long to get back into shape after giving birth and according to this book there is no getting into shape a few months after. Its a waiting game - which I guess is a little disappointing but the truth helps.
The most useful book I read about pregnancy weight loss.......2005-06-26
I lost 40 lbs of pregnancy weight in 3 months after my baby was born. I was nervous about my weight gain for this pregnancy (why is everyone else just gaining 25 or 30?) and was ready to accept that "you add 10 lbs for each baby" mentality. I'm the type of person that gains weight easily if I don't watch what I eat, and had never lost the extra weight I gained thru dieting alone. I was very thankful for this book. First and foremost it gave me confidence about myself. It's OK to be fat after giving birth!!! It's such a simple common sense but when you're flying high on hormone and busy with a newborn, it's hard to see yourself in the mirror and still look 6 months pregnant. The 2nd most helpful part is DON'T even think about dieting or exercising in the first 6 weeks post partum. Some women rush into things but the book emphasizes recovering well from childbirth. I completely agree with it. And I patiently waited 7 weeks before I started to exercise, even after that I didn't overdo it. About 20 min a day, 3 days a week. I didn't go on any special diet. I followed normal portions for myself and eat healthy (again, this is just common sense but I would've be desperately try all sorts of crazy dieting fads to lose these 40 lbs if i hadn't read this book).
I wont' lie, I still hated to see my body in the mirror for the first 2 months, but with the explanation from this book about fat cells, and the self esteem I gained, I had a very good recovery, no post partum depression or baby blues even though I was up 20 hours a day. I want every pregnant woman to read it before childbirth (after childbirth you'll have no time, trust me). It gets rid of a lot of myth, and will get you on the right path to losing weight in a healthy way.
worked for me!.......2005-06-05
After the birth of my 3rd child, I was concerned about losing the extra 25 pounds I had gained. This book really changed my life in that it gave great tips and information that I didn't find anywhere else - about food journals, duration of exercise, and when to start trying to lose the weight. All her information was right on, and when I followed her suggestions, the pounds melted off so quickly that everyone around me was amazed. Don't get me wrong, it took a lot of hard work, but after reading this book, I realized that if I worked hard for 2 or 3 months, starting at 3 months postpartum, that I would see the results I wanted. After 2 months of hard work, the 25 pounds were long gone, and I felt really great about my accomplishments.

Useful Teacher Tool.......2001-01-23
This book is good for introducing the traditions of Chinese New Year. I have used it with Special Needs children,Bilingual students, and now my son's preschool class. It has photographs of parades, families celebrating the holiday, and the traditional Lion Dance(dragon dance). It is a great way to teach the holiday and multicultural issues for all ageas.
Book Description
The Fat Baby is an epic collection of poignant and often controversial stories photographed and written by acclaimed social documentary photographer Eugene Richards (b.1944). The culmination of a dozen years of reporting, both on and off assignment, these stories, each one different in style and tone, immerse us in the lives of Honduran coffee growers, members of a Kansas City street gang, drought-plagued villagers from Niger, and doctors in an embattled Bosnian hospital. They chronicle the birth of a first child, an explosion of family violence, the struggle of a farm family to hang onto its ancestral home, and the unearthing of a half-hidden grave said to hold the remains of a slave. Described as having an acute, sometimes hard-edged visual sensibility and a literary voice, Richards writes in order to come to terms with the complexities of what he is observing. At a time when photojournalists are often relegated to illustrating the ideas of others, he persists in interweaving his words and photographs to create boldly narrative stories that bear witness to the dramas of real lives and comment on the times in which we live. Deeply personal and prodigious in scope, The Fat Baby is a tribute to the emotional power of photography and a celebration of storytelling.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning book.......2004-05-14
It is a deeply moving photojournalistic record of the highest probe. Painfully honest, profound, harsh, unnervingly personal and exceptionally remarkable, this book is one of the best on my own personal and yes, unfairly short list of truly great photographers.
To all aspiring photographers and to established practitioners, I would suggest that perhaps instead of searching for your own style or buying the latest tool in the growing digital photo arsenal -- save the money and get the Gene Richards? ?Fat Baby? collection published and printed with care by Phaidon Press.
Hopefully it will serve you well as a "lighthouse" showing you the right direction while you navigate in the frustrating, never-ending search for new assignments. Perhaps constantly reminding you of what powerful photojournalism can be when commercial compromises and opportunistic careers are not the only options.

Book Description
“One, two, buckle my shoe. Three, four, shut the door. . . . . Nine, ten, big fat hen!” “Baker uses an imaginative array of acrylic colors for his hens--greens, purples, and pinks to contrast with the warm, yellow straw background. There are lots of things to count, such as sticks, eggs, chicks, and hens. A fine choice for toddler story hours.”--School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
Lovely Artwork - a review of "Big Fat Hen" (paperback).......2007-04-25
This is a book that re-illustrates the old One-Two-Buckle-My-Shoe rhyme; this time with cute chicks and fanciful hens. The book begins with mama hen chasing after 1 dragon fly, while 2 eggs wait to hatch. It goes on to show two cute chicks buckling a shoe, which is really rather silly and just the sort of thing toddlers find funny. [When I read this to my son, we both laughed with glee as the cute chicks 'pick(ed) up sticks'.] The book finishes with a flurry of hatching and dozens of soft yellow chicks.
Three Stars. [C+] Lovely artwork. The familiar rhyme of One-Two-Buckle-My-Shoe is retold in a cute fashion using chickens. Suitable for a gift for babies and toddlers, it is perhaps not the best acquisition for the home shelves as there is only one poem.
What a find!.......2000-07-31
I bought this book sight unseen and absolutely love it. I'm a kinder teacher always on the prowl for books with folk stories and nursery rhymes. Big Fat hen is... 1,2 Buckle My Shoe. The illustrations are fabulous and the kids, love the rhyming. It's a popular pick in my classroom!
Great book!.......2000-01-22
This is a great first book for a child, lots of counting and things to see in the pictures if you are really paying attention. Your toddler/preschooler will love it!
My 2 year old daughter loves this book........1999-04-25
There are ample pictures to count on each page that match the numbers on the page. The illustrations are gorgeous and she always claps when the chicks hatch. We read it every night.
Our four month old grandson is fascinated with this book!.......1999-01-06
Our grandson loves this book and learned to turn the pages at four months. The coloring and graphics appeal to him. Another grandmother gave it to us and she was right on target. It is the only book we've found that holds his interest and that he doesn't chew instead of read.
Customer Reviews:
Favorite Childhood Memory.......2007-07-12
My Dad used to read this book to me and my 3 siblings. We would giggle as he would do different voices for each character, especially the "and now I am also going to eat you". I have the original 1971 version (very well-loved & well-read), and all 3 of my own children have grown up with this tale. It is a great story to pass on to generations!
Something different!.......2006-06-11
This is an excellent book, which I had when I was a kid, 31 yrs ago. I am now looking to purchase it to share with my new baby.
Great for preschoolers.......2006-05-24
This story has repetitive text that preschoolers adore. The predictability allows kids to finish the sentences for their parents as they read them the story. The characters have funny names (Danish), but the ending can be disturbing for sensitive children. A great story for learning the short a sound or final t sound.
Fun book.......2005-02-21
I remember this book from my childhood. It drove my mother crazy to list all the items the fat cat ate. The names were very silly like Skolinkinlot & Skohotintot. I was just searching for this book to read to my boys and I seem to have lost it. Such a bummer. I hope I find it soon. If not, I'll have to order a new one! This book is too funny not to share.
"What have you been eating, my little cat? You are so fat.".......2003-08-09
I'm so happy to see others love this book as much as my sister and I do! It's so fun to read out loud!

Clever Fat Cat is a Charmer!.......2001-05-17
My 2 year old daughter loves this book! She has memorized it and can "read" it to herself! Fat Cat finds himself in a tree and becomes responsible for the eggs in a birds' nest. Fat Cat's friends want him to play but he declines as he is helping the little birdies hatch from the eggs. It teaches a a very timely lesson of accepting responsibility for your actions. This is not a lift-a-flap book, however there are 2 pages that unfold to advance the story. My daughter loves to open those pages. Also, with its big print and simple text, it is a great book for children who are just learning how to read.

Outrageously sassy Junie B. Jones will make young kids crave their daily dose of reading. And with this handy four-volume boxed set, whether they start with Junie B. Jones and Some Sneaky Peeky Spying or Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth, readers will laugh out loud at Junie B.'s hilarious mishaps and breathtakingly horrible grammar. Although the books should come with a caveat--Kids, don't try this syntax at home!--alert parents and teachers can use her malapropisms as learning opportunities for their impressionable charges. The set contains the first four titles in Barbara Park's extensive series (energetically illustrated by Denise Brunkus), including Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business and Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. All are great for reading aloud. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Junie B. Jones is back on audio with a collection of the four books that began the well-loved series.
Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus
Remember when it was scary to go to school? 'Cause it was your first day and you didn't know anything. Meet Junie B. Jones, kindergartner. She's so scared of the school bus and the meanies on it that when it's time to go home, she doesn't.
Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business
It's pooey on B-A-B-I-E-S until Junie B. finds out that her new dumb old baby brother is a big fat deal. Her two bestest friends are giving her everything they own just to see him. And guess what else? Maybe she can bring him to school on Pet Day.
Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth
Junie B.'s having a rough week. First she got punishment for shooting off her mouth in kindergarten. And now she's in big trouble again! 'Cause Monday is Job Day, and Junie B. told her class that she's got the bestest job of all. Only, what the heck is it?
Junie B. Jones and Some Sneaky Peeky Spying
Junie B. is the bestest spier in the whole world. That's 'cause she has sneaky feet. And her nose doesn't whistle when she breathes. But guess what? Junie B. might be real sneaky. And real peeky. But when she spies on Mrs., she could get into real trouble!
Customer Reviews:
Junie B is a hit.......2007-08-28
My 5 year old just loves Junie B. and it has made her want to read because she love the things this girl gets herself into. I just wish proper English was used all of the time because the slang is confusing to our daughter.
Junie B. Jones.......2007-08-21
I tried to read these to my stepdaughter and couldn't get past the bad grammer. My grandmother AND father were both English teachers and it just made me cringe. I was totally against these books until....my 5 year old came home with one two weeks ago and has fallen in love with reading. She reads Junie B on the way to school and even when I'm blow drying her hair at night. She is READING and LOVING it. June B. my not be my thing but it certainly has her attention and she is reading. No, she hasn't become June B. but she has become a kindergartner that is reading at a 2nd grade level. That's hard to knock! I counteract June B. by picking out classics like Heidi and Swiss Family Robinson to read to her for my story time at night. I still can't stomach the language but I'm not standing in the way of my child's reading either.
Hilarious, ingenious, indispensible.......2007-08-17
Barbara Park is an American treasure, and she is one of the funniest writers out there. She has hit upon an improbable heroine and an unlikely template, from which pours forth a seemingly never ending fountain of inspiration. I enjoyed reading these aloud to my 5-year old daughter, stopping often to manage the guffaws commencing from my belly, until she took to them herself and voraciously plowed through the rest of the series. I'll never forget her lying on her back the night after we had read our first one (where Junie hurts her toe kicking a water can) saying to me "Remember how Junie B. had all those problems?..."
I know that I can trust my daughter to chart her course to reading and independent thought with a little gentle guidance on my part, and I appreciate the heroic efforts of Barbara Park to stoke the fire within my daughter's mind, which every new adventure of Junie B. kindles a little further.
The junk food of children's books.......2007-08-02
The Junie B. Jones books I have read are a sad example of children's literature. The grammatical errors are excessive and detract from the stories. The errors would be expected in a child of 2 or 3 years of age but not a 5 or 6 year old. We have three books that my daughter and I have made corrections in but I will not be purchasing any more. There are many other choices in children's literature to satisfy a child's imagination and encourage a love of reading. Stupid is not cute. This junk is pumped out for the masses to gorge on like McDonald's. So enjoy, we've had our fill.
Critics of Junie B. Jones undermine their own argument.......2007-07-28
My wife and I amused ourselves perusing the negative comments on the Junie B. Jones series. In an unintended irony, the critiques are replete with deviations from standard English usage and spelling, just the sort of thing the enemies of Junie B. Jones claim to deplore. These critics are either very careless about what they put up for all the world to see, or they are in dire need of a refresher course on the fundamentals of writing in English.
Our children adore the Junie B. Jones books. To date, we have detected no ill effects from their immersion in these very amusing and relevant stories.
