The book is awesome. Beautiful pictures. Very well explained. DVD is very good, even funny. Pay attention to what they say more than what they look like. Glad to have this !
Nymph-Fishing Rivers and Streams.......2007-04-04
The book is well written and extremely informative. The CD is informative, but hokie. I would definitely recommend this product for anyone that is interested in learning to fish with nymphs. It is also worthwhile for those who are interested in improving their nymph fishing techniques.
nymph fishing rivers and streams.......2007-03-23
one of the best books i've read on the subject, pictures are wonderful and help explain quite a bit, dvd included as well...Very easy to read and informative on techniques as well...
Nymph-Fishing Rivers And Streams: A Biologist's View of Taking Trout Below the Surface.......2007-02-19
Great book for a beginner nymph fisherman. Enjoy the large color pictures and illustrations. Rick tends to get bogged down with the specifics of aquatic insect entomology. I guess that's to be expected by an author that has a Masters in aquatic entomology. I wish the book would of had more information, pictures, and illustrations on what different patterns are used to imitate the aquatic insect trout regularly feed upon.
Nice review of various nymphing techniques.......2007-01-14
Good photos and nice explanations of "how to" fish with nymphs using different nymphing techniques. Tackle suggestions are a nice touch. While the book is somewhat basic, the DVD is a real hoot to watch--some corny humor (that I appreciate) and some great demos of how to fish the nymphs.

Better Trout Habitat: A guide to Stream Restoration and Mana.......2001-11-01
This book provides an in depth review of the methods and techniques used to provide habitat characteristics to a variety of streams. The writting style is excellent for both the lay reader as well as someone with a scientific back ground. However, it does not dwell on some fot the more technical details which requires a more technical level book to provide more indepth details. However, as a general manual to habitat resoration it provides an excellent background as well as the necessary caution needed when conducting these types of instream restoration projects.
Good Trout Habitat and Life Cycle Reference.......2000-06-07
This book offers a good variety of man-made trout improvement structures, but the current (2000) state-of-the art in trout habitat improvement trends toward a more natural, vegetation and channel reconstruction approach. This book provides excellent design guidelines and background information on trout and their life cycle, and perhaps the most useful part of this book was the author's ability to teach the reader enough about the habitat requirements of trout to allow the reader some latitude and innovation with their habitat improvement designs.
I personally enjoyed the workable, readable and philosophical approach to fish habitat improvement, and I believe that this book would be a good reference for anyone who wishes to improve trout habitat.
Remember, an ounce of habitat preservation is better than ten pounds of habitat restoration efforts! (Also, the information in this book will help the reader become a more effective trout fisherman!)
Book Description

awesome.......2007-01-28
If you want to learn from one of the best, jump all over Tom's books. Any book you pick will be loaded with info. Tom will tell you just how its done.
the very best of its kind.......2004-08-13
rosenbauer's books are, in my opinion, the very best introductory and intermediate fly fishing books available. this particular book about reading trout streams is an absolulte gem; we learn about different water types, the needs of trout, the relationship between water type and insect activity, etc.
everyone needs to learn to cast, tie knots and identify basic kinds of trout foods; this book will help any fly fisherman better understand where in the water the trout actually hold, how flows and other seasonal changes affect trout habitat, and will eliminate some of the time that we all waste fishing 'dead water.' an excellent read and even better teaching material.

Book Description
Pennsylvania is renowned for its well protected and uncrowded trout streams, and this guide has established itself--after two editions and more than 30,000 copies sold--as the trusted resource for resident and visiting anglers. Many of the 10,000 miles of classified trout water in the state is easily accessible from major population centers. But this massive, complete work also includes smaller "secret" streams in remote regions. This third edition has been completely redesigned, as well as updated and expanded. Fourteen streams have been added. Features include: extensive insect hatch charts keyed to each stream; advice on matching the batch with the right flies; local fly patterns; color photographs and detailed maps; at-a-glance headings for each stream that tell you how to get there, what to bring, regulations, and highlights.

good information /but not as detailed.......2001-06-18
this book covered alot of streams that i hoped it would but i thought the information was not as detailed for each stream as i would like to have read.this book i feel still is a must for every PA. fly fisherman
Trout Streams and Hatches of Pennsylvania.......1999-12-03
If you fish for trout in Pennsylvania, buy this book! The author was born next to a trout stream in PA. He has actually fished in most of the streams he writes about, and provides accurate information about the streams and the hatches to expect. It contains maps and the locations of the special project areas (e.g. artifical lures or fly-fishing only). I have tried a number of streams based soley on his recommendations and have not been disappointed. This is the second edition; it contains a number of streams not included in the first. It is practical and clearly written.
Book Description

Best Fly Fishing Book I have found........2007-04-25
The information is great for someone that wants to learn about fly fishing the South Platte River. If you asked me about the South Platte River this book would be how I explained it.
Excellent guide.......2003-02-11
I found the book extremely informative. The reputation of the South Platte is that of a stream with very selective trout. This book saved me years of guesswork and research.
The files that are recommended are essential to success. The first time I visited the South Platte I was armed with the arsenal of size 24's and 26's files and went home after landing about a dozen fish. Thanks Roger!!
A superbly presented guide to trout fishing.......2001-02-04
Roger Hill's Fly Fishing The South Platte River: An Angler's Guide is a superbly presented and comprehensive guide to trout fishing on the Colorado's South Platte River. The aspiring angler is treated to an informative discussion of mayflies, caddisflies, and midges that must be imitated to fish the waters successfully. The text is enhanced with recipes for more than a dozen flies with tying variations specific to the South Platte; tips on equipment, information on the unique nature of the South Platte, and illuminating photographs. Fly Fishing The South Platte River is a "must" for anyone wanting to enjoy the adventure and thrill of fly-fishing the South Platte.
In need of an update and better graphics.......2000-09-27
The material is a bit dated. Can you say Two Forks dam~! I was greatly disappointed in the minimal discussion on the specific sections of the river. His discussion on the flies and such was quite good, but I really wanted something with a bit more depth talking about the various stretches and the different type of entomology.

Book Description
Three miles downstream from Grayling, Michigan, is the Holy Water, a stretch of the Au Sable River that is some of the most storied trout fishing water in the country. One man, perhaps more than any other, has adopted this magical place as his own, nurturing, protecting, and sharing its secrets with generations of anglers over the years. His name is Rusty Gates.
In Seasons on the Au Sable, Rusty imparts his substantial knowledge of how to fly fish this blue-ribbon trout fishery. And he should know. The Gates Au Sable Lodge is nestled along the banks of the Holy Water, and his legendary fly shop is a cast away from the Main Branch. His book begins with the most important month of the year--April, the season opener! It follows the progression of insect hatches that occur in northern Michigan, many unique to the Au Sable. Along with Rusty's stories and personal reflections on the river, the book includes practical advice such as which flies to use, the best time of day to fish, and what impact weather may have on hatches and fish activity.

The Rust Man Drops a Bomb on the Fly Fishing World.......2007-09-27
You may think you're an accomplished fly fisherman, but you don't know jack about the sport until you've read this new treatise by Rusty "F'in" Gates. From how to tie Dave's Hopper to how to skin the face of a scumbag who interferes with your cast, Rusty tells it like it is. He brings you all the raw secrets of fly fishing, something no author has had the balls to do before.
From the moment I set eyes on Bill "Duke" Sodeman's introduction, in which he relates a story about the time Rusty caught a trophy brookie and beat a drifter to death with it, I was transfixed. This book truly takes you into the seedy underbelly of the fly fishing world with a level of honesty and brutality that I simply was not prepared for. Every chapter took my breath away.
Sure, this book covers the basics, such as how to choose your equipment, how to make a variety of casts, and what to do in given environmental conditions, but plenty of books do that. Where this book shines is its presentation of fly fishing's all-night cocaine binges, orgies with teenage groupies, and shocking violence perpetrated against fish and man alike. If you are not a fly fisherman, this book will challenge your fortitude as it dares you to pick up a rod and venture into the wilderness alone. If you are a fisherman of any skill level, this book will give you the tools you need to survive on the bloodthirsty Holy Waters of the Au Sable river.
Pass this one by at your own peril.
A most relaxing read!!!.......2007-09-12
This is a book for all flyfishing lovers...Turn the TV and radio off, open the windows to hear the birds, bugs and wind and to smell the out-of-doors. Then settle into your favorite chair and savor every word of this refreshing book. You can hear the river and in a minute or two, you are there...on a mini-vacation. Rusty Gates succintly captures the mood and the mystery of the great North and in particular, the "Holy Water" of the famed AuSable River in Michigan. What a tribute to a grand river and what better author than Mr. Au Sable, himself. I am hoping for another book by Rusty in the future.
Wisdom from the guardian of the river!.......2007-05-25
This book is a glimpse at the year in the life of a man and a river. Rusty Gates, along with Anglers of the Au Sable[...], is the guardian angel of a river system that is the jewel of Northern Michigan. The book contains the week by week fishing logs and thoughts that any angler visiting this area would benefit greatly from reading. The book is written in a way that makes you feel like you're talking to Rusty in his shop on the banks of the Holy Waters. A must read for Northern Michigan Troutbumm's!

A must have.......2007-08-07
This book is fantastic. The author literally fished almost every stream and wrote about them. The book is filled with photos and maps to help get a visual on what he is describing about each stream. I also found helpful the places to stay and eat he suggested. Make notes of your own next to each stream he wrote about. A must have when scouting new trout streams.
Excellent reference guide.......2003-11-07
I am a guide and fly fisherman in SE Minnersota and still refer to this book when I explore new water. Almost as good as having a guide with you. Mel Hayner MINNESOTAFLYFISHING.COM

Fly fishing in Oregon (Mostly).......2007-08-04
Leeson writes so well and describes his responses to rivers and fishing so clearly that you almost experience the rivers with him. I don't fish but I read it happily and then shared it with my brothers (who do fish).. If you fish, read it; if you don't fish but like Oregon rivers, read it anyway.
We need more great fly fishing books.......2007-04-03
If you love fly fishing, and like me, don't get on stream enough, settling for a good book on the subject is the next best thing. This was very enjoyable reading. This and Trout Eyes by Bill Tapply are the two recent books I've really enjoyed. I just wish fine books like this on the subject were published more often.
better than expected.......2007-02-06
I ordered my book 2 weeks before classes started and it was at my house within a week. i was amazed. and the quality of the book was excellet. saved me tons of money at the college bookstore, thanks a million.
Read slowly, it speaks to your soul........2007-02-06
I received this book from my son. He knows me as well as anyone. He knows I'm struggling with my "fishing experience" and looking for direction. I don't need to catch the biggest fish or experience the newest destinations. I need to fish. I need to fly fish. Ted Leeson helped tell me why. This book spoke to my soul. It corrected my direction. I have read many fishing books, some technical some just good stories. The first time, and I'll read it again, I read this book I realized early on that I needed to read it slowly, introspectively. I was in this book. Mr. Leeson spoke to me. He answered my direction question when he said, "In the end, to fish well is to cultivate an arrangement of time and place, of circumstance and perspective. We arrange ourselves into the arrangement, and if the collusion is careful and lucky, we reap a kind of enclosed moment of some sharply felt beauty and significance." The Habit of Rivers is a special book and I recommend it to any fly fisher looking for direction or confirmation.
One of the Best Modern FF Lit Books.......2006-06-23
Well writtne and thoughtful, Leeson's book, along with his splendid "Jerusalem Creek", are just what the brotherhood of angling literature looks foward to - On teh same Shelf with Thomas McGuane, Bill Barich, Harry Middleton, Chris Camuto, R. Haig Brown, Russell Chatham - well, you get the idea. Highly recommended
