Book Description

“'You will do foolish things' said the great writer Colette, 'but do them with enthusiasm!' And that, my darlings, I have done! So put your feet up, relax, and let me take you on one woman's journey through the beguiling, bewildering wilderness of romantic encounters, replete with puppy love, Latin love, smoldering lust, stardust, obsession, high comedy, high camp, and all manner of peccadilloes and misadventures. A rollicking, madcap ride through the wide-open countryside of love. Just watch out for land mines.”
--From My First Five Husbands . . . And the Ones Who Got Away

People always ask me if I'm like Blanche. And I say, 'Well, Blanche was an oversexed, self-involved, man-crazy, vain Southern Belle from Atlanta -- and I'm not from Atlanta!’” -- Rue McClanahan

Who can forget Rue McClanahan as the sexy Southern vixen, Blanche Devereaux, on the Emmy-award winning series The Golden Girls? With her breezy sex appeal and sharp comedic timing, Rue infused her character with a sassy joie de vivre that captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Now, the actress behind the magic reveals her life in and out of the spotlight in a laugh-out-loud funny memoir about love, marriage, men, and getting older that is every bit as colorful as the characters she plays.

Raised in small-town Oklahoma in a house “thirteen telephone poles past the standpipe north of town,” Rue developed her two great passions—theater and men—at an early age. She arrived in New York City in 1957 with two-weeks worth of money in her pocket, hustled her way into a class with the legendary Uta Hagen, and began working her way up in the acting world against the vibrant, free-spirited backdrop of the sixties. That’s when she met and married Husband #1—a handsome rogue of an aspiring actor who quickly left her with a young son. Still, she was determined to make it on the stage and screen—and in the years that followed, rose to the top of the entertainment world with a host of adventures (and husbands) along the way.

From her roles on Broadway opposite Dustin Hoffman and Brad Davis, to her first television appearances on Maude and All in the Family, to the Golden Girls era and beyond, My First Five Husbands is the irresistible story of one woman’s quest to find herself. Now happily married to Husband #6, Rue is proof that many things can and do get better with age—and that with tenacity, talent, and a little help from Saint Dymphna, even a small-town girl can make it big.

Told with Rue’s saucy wit and Southern charm, My First Five husbands is a deliciously entertaining take on life and love from an irrepressible star.

2 out of 5 stars Light hearted reading.......2007-08-23

I love Rue McClanahan and couldn't wait to get her book. It was a fun read and I did enjoy it but don't look for too much depth.

5 out of 5 stars "Frippery combined with fierceness".......2007-07-14

I love "The Golden Girls" and couldn't wait to read Rue McClanahan's autobiography. She writes in a manically bubbly style, gushing over the highs and lows of a long show-biz career and a love-life so hot it would make even Blanche Devereaux blush.

Eddie Rue McClanahan was born into a conservative Oklahoma family during the Depression, and from an early age wanted desperately to be popular. Popular, to Rue, meant being loved and adored by men, and she was always falling in love too easily. She was a struggling stage actress in New York with two quick marriages and divorces under her belt when she met Norman Lear who began casting her in TV sitcoms. Two more divorces later, she landed the role of the man-hungry Blanche on "Golden Girls," The Golden Girls" The Golden Girls - The Complete First Season and world-wide fame. Breast cancer and husband number 5 bring her story up to date.

I was fascinated with Rue's unfailing optimism, her gritty determination to succeed as an actress, and her abysmally poor decisions when it came to men. I gave up counting how many affairs she had, and was appalled at how quickly she married and then lost interest in her husbands. Some were physically and emotionally abusive and some were just weird. Now in her seventies, Rue is still the ageless coquette, the belle of the ball. She names names and doesn't pull any punches in this book; Rue's fans won't be able to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-07-05

Excellent book to read for fun. I found this book very enlightening and couldn't wait to read in the evenings. Ms. McClanahan writes a totally honest and unbiased book and I'm amazed at all the twists and turns that she experienced in her career and person life. She tells the story like a true Golden Girl would tell it. However, she must have been busy constantly because 'The Golden Girls' show is only a small part of her career.

5 out of 5 stars So much to love!.......2007-06-13

As someone who is 21 years old, I'm sure a lot of people are wondering why I'd be interested this book, but I absolutely adore Rue McClanahan and always have since I was little girl watching Golden Girls. This was a wonderful book. I enjoyed hearing about all of her experiences and revelations. She has a brilliant writing style and as someone mentioned before it is definitely like listening to great girl talk from one of your girlfriends! This was such a fun read and I'm sad I finished it in two days. I wish there was more to read!!! It deserves more than 5 stars. Thanks Rue for making me laugh for the past 18 years of my life!

4 out of 5 stars Five Husbands and She Kept trying!.......2007-06-12

I am happy for Rue McClanahan who finally found happiness with number six, Morrow Wilson. They are happily living in New York City with their cat, Bianca. Rue's autobiography is touching as revealing. I never cared for Blanche as much as I cared for Vivan on Maude and Aunt Frances Crowley on Mama's Family. The book explained that Rue was having health problems which explained her absence from Mama's Family. Lucky for millions of others, they got to see her in the role of a lifetime playing Blanche Deveraux for eight seasons on the golden hit, The Golden Girls. It brought her international fame. It's a popular show around the world especially in England where even British sitcom stars like the late John Inman and Frank Thornton sing it's praises. I love Rue's almost tell-it-like it is biography. Her love for Brad Davis and many other lovers as well as the gay following of the Golden Girls which I didn't know there was until I read the book. She writes about her difficult labor with her only child, Mark, who she writes fondly and dedicates the book too. She doesn't mention Wicked on Broadway. She does not slight or offend any of her co-stars of the past. I wished there was a photo of her as Aunt Fran and Vivian on Maude. To me, she'll always be one or the other. I have seen Golden Girls enough and while I admire it's writing, acting, and the sensation that it caused on television. I still think Rue rather as Aunt Fran, the old maid journalist and aspiring writer. If Mama's Family hadn't been cancelled, Rue would still be playing Aunt Fran to Betty White's Ellen but I think the funniest thing was when Vicki Lawrence sent a male stripper to her hospital room when she was recovering as a present. It was something more of Blanche than of Aunt Fran.

    Book Description

Five-Star Basketball Camps have long been synonymous with quality basketball instruction -- some of the best players in the world have been Five-Star campers: including Michael, Patrick, Isaiah, Moses, Christian, Alonzo, Grant, Stephon, The Rainman, Elton, Allan, Jayson and Vince! In 1999 eight former Five-Star Campers were selected as NBA first round draft picks: Elton Brand, Steve Francis, Richard Hamilton, Ron Artest, Trajan Langdon, Dion Glover, Corey Maggette and Jumaine Jones! As a longtime leader in basketball instruction, Five-Star feels it must continue in its quest to educate young players about their sport. About 20 years ago, Five-Star published a book based on the drills and teachings of their boys' camps Five-Star Basketball Drills, that has become an essential part of every coach's library. In 2000, Five-Star compiled and produced the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art collection of drills by girls' and women's coaches ever assembled. Ten thousand copies were sold in the first two years of its publication. In 2003, we are pleased to announce the publication of an updated version of Five-Star Girls' Basketball Drills with more of what was loved in the first edition: more great drills, more great coaches, more information on how to make the most of your playing time as a player and how to get the most out of your team if you are a coach!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good practice material.......2007-05-15

There are a great variety of drills from all over the country and different programs, and they encompass every skill development need and many possible numbers of players I could be working with at any one time. It is a great boost to my normal practice plan and drills.

    5 out of 5 stars A Five-Star in Your Basketball Coaching Library.......2005-01-26

Join some of the nation's finest womens' coaches as they share the drills they use at the most premiere women's camp in the country. The book contains ten chapters (over 100 Drills) that examines everything from nutrition to skill development. Coaches sharing drills include Tara Van Derveer, Joe Ciampi, Matt Brzycki, Kristie Curry, and more.
If you truly understand basketball this book is even better than the First Edition. Although in-depth, this book is not complicated or hard to understand. It is a user friendly resource, that any coach or player, should possess. This book is a must for the beginner, intermediate and/or advanced player/coach.

5 out of 5 stars Many Great Drills.......2005-01-26

I couldn't be happier with this book. It gave me many drills to use with my team from some of the best coaches in the game.
It's a great addition to any serious coach's library.

Anything by Sandra Scoppettone is really good and just keeps getting better. Beautiful Rage is her very best so far.

    1 out of 5 stars Scoppettone's Worst Ever Effort.......2005-07-13

Scoppettone's storytelling in Beautiful Rage lacks her usual passion, and the action and characterizations seem forced. All the elements of a good novel are here, but the spark seems to be missing. This is most noticeable in the dialogue, which is especially wooden and stiff.

I will give Ms. Scoppettone another chance, as I've been made to understand that she herself isn't very fond of this book. My copy of This Dame for Hire is next up on my reading list.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2004-09-11

I really liked this book a lot. It's not the usual serial killer tale. The characters are strong and the story's a good one, fast-paced and compelling. It isn't at all like Scoppettone's previous crime novels. Read it -- you'll like it!

    5 out of 5 stars A superb mystery.......2004-09-11

In Snowden County, Virginia, forty-three year old Sheriff Lucia Dove works a missing teen case. Apparently, good girl Julie Boyer came home from school and vanished not long afterward. The only clues are her Internet romance with Floridian Lyle Taylor. Lucia works closely on the investigation with Lieutenant Jack Fincham assisting her. The two cops have the hots for one another, but hide it as he is unhappily married to an alcoholic in denial and has a child. Lucia had a child out of wedlock, but she died in an accident.

Jack's wife apparently commits suicide, but FBI Agent Mike McQuigg, Lucia's nasty ex-husband, thinks murder occurred. He legally searches Jack's home only to find a razor with DNA evidence linked to two other female teen homicides in the area. Lucia believes that Jack is being set up and wonders why Mike got involved in the case starting with the missing Julie. She begins her own inquiries not sure where it will take her, but when she gets there she is in for quite a shocker.

This solid police procedural contains an interesting lead protagonist who struggles with any wrong doing to children because of her daughter's death even if she agreed with the official ruling of accident. The story line is fast-paced and the simmering desire between Jack and Lucia is hotter than the Arizona desert in summer. Though the identity of the serial killer will stun the audience who may think that it seems too way out, fans will appreciate this tense thriller.

      Book Description

Tuya came as a teenaged slave to Potiphar's household, a personal gift from the mighty Pharaoah. Tall and slender, the young girl knew nothing of her past except that she had always been a slave.

Another young slave came to Potiphar, purchased from traveling Midianites. If harnessed properly, Potiphar envisioned that this Joseph would pull more than his share of the work load.

In the household of the captain of Pharaoh's guard, Tuya and Joseph come to share their dreams of better things, freedom, and love. But as quickly as their destinies seem to entwine, they are torn apart. Will the dreams they share destroy them both?

First in the Legacies of the Ancient River Series!

      4 out of 5 stars series.......2007-04-27

this book (and it's two other books) were the first of the "biblical fiction" series i read. and the story of joseph had already been one of my favorite bible stories.
i read all three of these books in a month. and then when i just moved and rediscovered them in a box i reread them and found them to be just as enjoyable as the first.

there is a whole lot of added story line in here and the scripture dosn't interwine as much as i'd have liked but it was all in all a great read.
and if you read this series and like it... you will for sure enjoy lynn austins "chronical of the kings" series.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Biblical fiction with message of faith.......2006-04-05

Dreamers by Angela Hunt is the fictionalized story of Joseph from the Bible. Hunt is always compelling with her Biblical fiction, but this book [...] in so completely that at times I found myself worrying about what was going to happen next even though I know how the story ends! This is just the first book in a trilogy about Joseph and his family and covers the time from his becoming a slave until shortly before his brothers come from Canaan seeking food. I always viewed Joseph as a paragon of virtue in the Bible. While God chooses some shady characters on occasion to use and make His covenant with (Jacob, Samson, even Abram), Joseph always comes out with a shine. This book really showed a different, but completely realistic, side to Joseph. It's easy to see how pride could overtake him. The level of detail of Egyptian life and culture is wonderful. Hunt has done so much research into history; she truly makes it come alive. The message of Dreamers is trusting in God. Joseph has to learn to rely on the Lord instead of himself and his own abilities and trust that God has a plan in mind for him. Tuya also has to learn to trust the Lord with nothing less than her own heart and know that He works all things for good. I've read reviews cutting down the romance between Joseph and Tuya in the book, but this relationship is handled beautifully with restraint and realistic growth between both characters. Angela Hunt has written another wonderful piece of Biblical fiction that can enlighten the heart.

4 out of 5 stars Fleshes out the Biblical tale.......2002-07-01

I liked this book because it had more meat than the biblical tale. I know that many of the supporting characters are fictional, but everything taken in context adds so much more depth than we usually read. I thought it was interesting how Joseph, Tuya, Sagira, and the pharaohs all had lives that intertwined at various points.

This book has loves stories, murderous plots, and forgiveness. I liked how the interplay of the different religions came into focus with Tutmosis. It was different, reading about a Pharaoh as a human being.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

      3 out of 5 stars I won't repeat earlier criticisms but.......2002-03-15

I'lll add that there are historical and Biblical problems. However what does not seem to be mentioned in other reviews is the strange brief introduction to Egyptian family "history" before the story begins. Over and over I asked "where did she get ideas like this" and had to conclude since her "facts" are not cited or documented in any way that she must be reading Herodotus or some modern pseudo-historical work based on misconceived ideas about the benefits of finding matriarchical, matrilineal, and matrifocal cultures. Aside from the questionable family "history" there is also the fact that the story itself does not make reference to the introduction in almost any way until we get to the plot to kill Pharaoh in the last third of the book. The idea of creating female character who could have contact with Joseph and playing up the competition of religions is very well played out in the story. The plot and characters were interesting enough to keep me reading. It is less "G-rated" than many stories based on the Joseph tale or almost any modern fictional retelling of a society that readily embraced slavery -- still not as accurate as it could be but is our society truly ready for such accuracy?

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2001-05-21

It was hard to put this book down!! I had read the Old Testament account of the life of Joseph before, but this book brought it vividly to life. It's believable as well as fascinating. Hunt's portrayal of ancient Eygpt is stunning. All of Hunt's books have been wonderful, but this is definately one of the best!!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the 15.......2002-05-09

This is the best book in a great series.

Very realistic. Presents both sides of the argument. Doesn't make any false promises that magick will fix every problem in your life or make it go away with a snap of the fingers--but does show that through magick and faith, good things can be accomplished. The girls face very realistic hurdles due to their Wiccan involvement.

Re: the prior review--I don't think all the difficulties came about solely due to the necklace. Kate had hidden her Wiccan involvement from her parents until this issue made them ask questions. Annie's family already knew and didn't care, but she had not told her boyfriend yet, then chose to come out Wiccan in the school paper. All these experiences are quite realistic and young Wiccans may have to deal with one or all of them at some point.

5 out of 5 stars The best in the series!!.......2002-04-22

Definately the best book in the series. In this book, a ton of things happen. Kate finally reveals her involvement in Wicca to her parents, and the blow a fuse!! While she's telling this to her parents, Cooper's going through a rough spot too. She's suspended for coming to school wearing her necklace that has a pentacle on it. She takes the problem to the school board, but they tell her that she can't wear it. She gets a petition signed to get a revote, and with a little help from Sophia, she wins and is alloud to wear her pentacle. This book was definately the best in the series, and I've read them all. I would definately read this book! Not just this book, the whole series!!!!!!! They're the best!!!!!!!

      3 out of 5 stars Making a Mountain out of a Molehill.......2002-03-23

The Five Paths in the Circle of Three series is the one that deals with the controversy that arises from one of the three heroines - Cooper - wearing a pentagram symbol of her Wiccan religion. However, this does not go down well with her environment at school, and eventually her determination to wear a symbol of her religion leds her into serious trouble. This is a very important book in the series dealing with free-will, religious rights and personal expression, and thankfully the author gives a good account of BOTH sides of the arguement. As much as Wiccans hate it, the pentagram is also a symbol used by Satanists and people will continue to identify the pentagram with them. However, this book helps teach the ignorant that the importance is not the symbol itself, but what it means to the person who is wearing it.
Unfortunatly the entire premise is based on the possibility that wearing a pentagram symbol will led to outrage, violence, court-cases, newspaper articles and un-founded prejudice. I won't deny that there is prejudice against all religions in the world, but I found it hard to believe that all the negative events that occured in the book were simply because one high-schooler wore a pentagram necklace.

5 out of 5 stars Colors of Another world........2001-12-23

After reading this far in the Circle of Three books I've seen the exampls of witchcraft and the effects they have on people. This book has opend the eyes of people including me. In the book Cooper decides to show her belifes freely by wearing her pentacle star which is one of the greatest symbols involved in the Craft. Most are very unconfortable when they see her star. Will Cooper have to give up the pentacle? Meanwhile Kate is haveing trouble telling her parents about her involvement in witchcraft. Will she lose all she's worked so hard for? Also Annie decides to express her belifes in witchcraft freely. Will
her decision bring her world crashing down on her?
I rated this book a five because even though these books are about the girls and their expieriences this one really opened my eyes. And I'd just like to say that Cooper, Kate, and Annie are right, most don't truley know what witchcraft is and what it stands for... it's completely harmless unless you don't know what you're doing. And I know that some wish to make sure their children aren't invovled with the Craft, and I respect that but sometimes the best way to "protect" something, is to set it free.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Factual and VERY well written.......2001-10-23

This book is about the contraversy of the pentagram and religious freedom and freedom of speech. This hit very close to home for me. I deal with this contraversy everyday and the book pointed out quite a few details about both sides of the story. It went into detail about the kind of things kids now deal with and the kind of persucution people like me face. So, it wasn't just fiction, it was fact. It's a must read!! It was by-far the best book written and I give it 5 stars.
