Book Description
Now anyone can learn a foreign language while commuting to work, running errands, or even taking a trip with the family. The new all-audio Drive Time series starts with an ingenious “On-Ramp” CD that eases language learners into Spanish, French, Italian, or Japanese with simple, practical expressions and engaging warm-up exercises. Three additional CDs contain 18 lessons that cover all of the essentials—vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and basic conversation.
Drive Time also includes a 64-page reference guide for anyone who would like to see spellings or read dialogues as a review—from the passenger seat, of course!

Useful if Used with Behind the Wheel Spanish/Not Alone.......2007-08-14
I have purchased virtually every Spanish course I could find on Amazon.
Some are great, like Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs and text.
Others are medicore, like Drive Time Spanish.
Drive Time would be better if they cut out the horns blowing and all the other cute tricks that distract rather than teach.
Aside from this and other drawbacks, I do feel that the course is worth purchasing if used with another superior course such as Behind the Wheel Spanish.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour
Impossible to follow.......2007-07-31
CD 1 starts off great! The speaker reviews words over and over, and they're used in sentences repeatedly. It moves nice and slow, which is valuable when you're trying to drive (Drive Time...)
By CD2 they quit the repetition, and they speak the words so quickly, there's absolutely no hope of keeping up.
I gave up
Not for beginners but a great tool for those with prior exposure to spanish.......2007-06-12
This audio collection is a definite tool if you have had previous exposure to learning spanish. If you are a beginner with no experience in learning the lanuguage, this series probably moves too fast for you and is a little more difficult to comprehend. I had 4 years of spanish in high school but had a 4 year lull where I didn't study the language so I lost a lot. This CD set offered a quick reintroduction to the language on the first CD and then takes off into some of the grammar and a lot of dialogue. This is a very valuable tool in learning to feel comfortable speaking the language. I listen in the car on the way to work and back and have listened to each CD several times so it sticks in my brain. I would reccomend to anyone who has taken at least a year of spanish in the past and feels comfortable with the basics such as pronouns, simple phrases and some verbs.
Drive Time Spanish (Living Language).......2007-05-31
I have a little Spanish behind me, though I never took a formal class. I also live in a place with a lot of Spanish around me. Therefore I didn't need to crawl through the basics. For my modest skills, this series of lessons moved at a suitable pace. After 10 or 12 lessons -- about an hour's worth -- I could string a few original sentences together in a pinch and I was starting to think in Spanish a little. I'm not doing it in a car so it is very noticable that the lessons build on a highway driving theme but you gotta start somewhere and highways are as good as any place. The pronunciations are academic, not like Spanish speakers really talk but isn't that always the way?
spanish.......2007-05-14
the first cd was good, the second went to major grammer and was difficult to learn from. would not recommend this for beginners.

Complete Spanish.......2006-08-13
Great for beginners or for anyone wanting to review and improve their Spanish. Great price!
Not for a drive................2006-05-21
These Audio CD's (with what I thought was supplemental written materials) were purchased for learning in the car and are pretty useless without reading the accompanying books prior to listening to the CD's. I have only listened to the first one - and it is just lists of names/words. These may be a good complete beginner course, but definitely not an audio one.
Useless waste of time.......2006-03-14
I bought this for my fiance to use in the car as he travels a lot. I listened to it myself and found it to be very unhelpful.
The CD's did not explain anything, or why they just repeated words.
Not a trational way to learn a language.
Not useful at all - try a different one.
Who needs this [...] when there are better PODCASTS?.......2005-12-26
There are so many awesome podcasts for language that do a much better job teaching the language. I think they're better because they lack the stilted artifice so common with language CD's such as this one. Moreover, the speakers on the podcasts speak slowly, giving you the chance to really practice. Last, that's the best way to acquire a second language because it more closely approximates the way we all learn our first language - from our slow speaking mommies!
And the podcasts are free!
Best value in its price range.......2005-08-16
This is a great value product for a beginner. With a coursebook, 3 cd's or cassettes and a dictionary, the beginner will have an easy time settling in to the new language, and there is ample vocabulary and phrases to keep them moving forward. For a package so complete the price is outstanding.
The coursebook eases the learner into the language with several lessons on pronunciation, the alphabet, the vocabulary that is most useful (like numbers) or that is easy to remember or associate with (like days of the week, months of the year etc), and lots of cognates.
The course then gets into common sayings, dialogues, greetings and useful phrases before slowly tackling the grammar. Each of the 40 lessons has a few exercises that put to use the vocabulary, phrases and grammar covered in the lesson. Verb conjugations, tenses, word order and other rules of grammar and syntax are all demonstrated in small batches throughout the course. Never in great depth (hence the word Basic in the title) but everything that is essential in everyday speech (hence the word Complete).
The audio portion contained on the 3 cd's are coordinated with the coursebook. Bold text vocabulary and phrases in the coursebook are pronounced on the cd's. The early lessons are heavy in audio as the student needs to hear the sounds of the language to begin to develop their pronunciation skills.
The third part of this package is the dictionary, invaluable during and after finishing the course. The learner can begin to use vocabulary most relevant to their own needs, and apply them with the basic knowledge gained from the course.
The combination of a basic but able coursebook designed for the beginner, the all-important audio, and the dictionary for continued self-study make this a very well-rounded course for the beginner. The low price is simply unequalled. This package has better value than a comparably priced Teach Yourself course, and is more complete than Pimsleur Quick and Simple or Instant Conversation. This course will give someone a good foundation with the right tools to build upon, if worked through to the end diligently. In my opinion it is the best value course for a beginner in it's price range.
Book Description
Listeners have enjoyed classical music recordings for more than a century, yet important issues about recorded performances have been little explored. What is the relationship between performance and recording? How are modern audiences affected by the trends set in motion by the recording era? What is the impact of recordings on the lives of musicians? In this wide-ranging book, Robert Philip extends the scope of his earlier pioneering book, Early Recordings and Musical Style: Changing Tastes in Instrumental Performance 1900-1950. Philip here considers the interaction between music-making and recording throughout the entire twentieth century. The author compares the lives of musicians and audiences in the years before recordings with those of today. He examines such diverse and sometimes contentious topics as changing attitudes toward freedom of expression, the authority of recordings made by or approved by composers, the globalization of performing styles, and the rise of the period instrument movement. Philip concludes with a thought-provoking discussion of the future of classical music performance.

For Charles Rosen a masterly description of the effect recording music has had on the playing of it.......2005-10-26
Charles Rosen in 'The New York Review of Books' considers this book to be a masterly description of the effect recording music has had on the playing of it. He mentions one major effect and that is the substitution of great precision in performance at the expense of a certain spontaneity and warmth.
Rosen then in his review goes on to discuss certain technical features of playing music( especially piano) and how they have been effected by recording.
This work is one especially suited for those who have real knowledge of classical music.

Good place to start..........2006-10-17
When I was preparing to leave for Japan this was the first book I picked up to help with my language preparation. Imagine how surprised I was to find out when I got there and use some of the phrases on my new Japanese friends they said "Yes, we understand what you want to say but that's not what real Japanese people say." Later on in my study, my Japanese friend found the book, got a pen, and started changing the phrases around to suit a more natural style.
In short; this book is a good starting off point for learning Japanese but in no way should be considered modern or comprehensive.
IMPORTANT NOTE! If your are going to get this book, make sure you are getting the CD's too. Japanese in a language where the vowel sounds are totally different from English and a long vowel sound can totally change the meaning of a word. (EG. The words "hospital" and "hair salon" in Japanese have VERY similar pronunciation, you need to hear the words spoken it to produce it correctly.)
Good book for beginners.......2006-07-24
I started this course book and cd collection and I really like it. Unlike most tutorials it starts off with the basics of grammer: understanding vowel and consonant pronounciation. Starts off with everyday words for each, very short lesson to show you how to pronounce all the vowels and consonants and then you listen to the CD after every lesson to hear exactly what you are reading. Just like learning our own native language it teaches everyday words first, just like we learned apple, Monday, dollar etc first and then sentences. It also explains syllabary. I've picked up many tutorials trying to learn Japanese and so far this has been the easiest to understand and relate to. It's not repition from a tape/CD it's actual learning how to understand and speak it. THEN you can go on to learning kana, kanji, writing etc. Some complaints I read is that it doesn't use the Japanese characters or real-world sentences and situations. Well this is like learning in elementary school. You learn letters, then the words, then the sentences and essays and so on. You don't just jump into writing long words and sentences when you don't even know how to read yet. My only complaint is that with this and all the tutorials is that it's difficult for me to hear some of the words so I have to keep playing back the entire lesson just to replay one word that I have trouble with (on a CD).
Helpful but not perfect.......2005-10-03
I am in the process of studying Japanese to prepare for living in Tokyo next year. Learning Japanese through the Living Language series is helpful but also has some drawbacks. The biggest drawback is that the writers fail to include pronunciation helps in the text itself, however they do indeed provide native Japanese speakers to help in the accompanying three CDs. Also, they spend the first four or five lessons on various grammatical topics, which can actually be a little confusing when trying to learn a new language. Other language series jump into learning words and phrases by repetition, citing the fact that to really learn any new language you must practice repeating it over and over out loud and not worry at first about grammar and syntax. That being said, I will seek to finish the 40 lesson in this course and hope it better prepare me for my year that will be spend in Japan.

Great Intro Course.......2007-05-22
I used this course before visiting Germany after I graduated from High School. Prior to my trip I studied French in high school (the boring grammar, drills, verb conjugations, teacher saying, " Ecoute tout le monde, repite... "). At first I worried that I had picked up a phrase book that would not be helpful in forming sentances. I was also wary of the idea that only German was spoken on the cassette tapes. The German-only tapes turned out to be more helpful than a burden. It turns out that the proper way to study the course is to review the book prior to and then along with the audio a few times. Then you must use only the audio. When you hear and repeat the audio try thinking of the meaning of the sentance in terms of imagages and feelings instead the English translation.
The results that I experienced were that my listening comprehension in German was better than that of the French that I studied for 3 years in high school. I was able to form sentances more intuitively than by trying remember verb congugations. Latter in college I studied German and I was well ahead of my classmates. In Germany I was able communicate even though I could not have a full conversation.
This course will not get you to fluency but if you learn that way I learn (intuitvlely with little emphasis on rules)then it is a great beginning. There is very little in the way of grammar, but hey, do you really diagram your sentances in the middle of speaking English?
The only drawback is that there are numerous helpful drills in the text that are not included with the audio.
Good... for some.......2007-05-17
I had purchased this set primarily to learn conversational german for a two-week stay in Germany, although I did have some interest in learning the language for a long time. While this set does provide a good method for learning a large amount of the language, it is not easily approachable for casual learners. For instance, it will take a while to get to lessons involving important phrases for travelling.
However, if you are looking for a rather in-depth introduction to the language, this may be just your ticket.
Considering the sheer number of lessons, the coursebook will likely take a few months to get through (at least if you intend to retain the knowledge). The requirement to use both the CD's and the book make it quite difficult to set time for learning. Also, the CD's are filled with German phrases or words without any actual dividers, making for a very muddled and confused rambling of german words - you really need to follow along with the book!
I feel that I am learning little bits, but this program is not as easy to use as others have been.
Complete German.......2005-10-23
I am taking a german class, and hearing the words is helpful. I also like the tests in the text. I wish the text was a larger scale of the font. There are some errors in the text.

Scary book if you've met the people........2006-12-21
Having known some of the people mentioned in this book it makes me want to get out of the industry, or at least go it on my own. At least now in the digital age that is possible. Hopefully the industry has been cleaned up, but I know a lot of it still goes on.
Stench of Corruption Leads To Reagan's Justice Department.......2004-04-04
Knoedelseder's "Stiffed" is the definitive book on Record/Movie Industry politics. The book reads like a mystery novel, but is all true. The book centers around a bunch of "cutouts," these are records that did not sell due to over supply and were returned to the record company. Cutouts are usually sold to a second party at a steep discount and end up on the
shelves of Walmart for $2.99. The artist does not receive any money, no royalties
whatsoever on these items.
"Stiffed" tells the story how millions of "cutouts" were sold, by way of mafia henchmen
working out of the offices of MCA records in Universal City, California. This is a story
of "follow the money." And a story of how Reagan's Justice department interfered in the
process of trying to prosecute MCA record executives.
At one point in the book, a prosecuting attorney wonders if he is stepping on the toes
of some strange alliance of some sort of MCA/Mafia/CIA/Iran Contra connection as
Reagan's Justice department puts the kibosh on his investigation.
Every student of politics should have this book as a reference book. You will see how
"spin control" is really worked in government, and in a powerful corporation.
I recommend this book highly.
Why the music business can be hazardous to your health..........2001-08-10
The sordid story of how MCA Records got "mobbed up" during music biz mogul Irving Azoff's tenure as company president. Knoedelseder starts off with a powerful narrative, but as it shifts from an industry expose into a Mafia fetish, and then into a trial book, it starts to drag. Still, the first third tells you a lot about the underside of the record business economy, in particular, how "cutout" records and counterfeits get into the stores. After that, you'll learn that mafia strongmen and government prosecutors can both be bad for your health and livelihood, lessons which are always good to keep in mind, even though they're almost self-apparent.
