not all that it's cracked up to be .......2007-09-20
kind of vague not as much technique as I expected, but i dont regret buying it
A big disappointment.......2007-09-20
I was very disappointed by this book and don't agree with the glowing reviews.
I am a photographer who was interested in the difference between film shooting and digital shooting in a wedding situation.
I found this book to be VERY basic and is more appropriate for someone who is brand new to the wedding photography.
Even with that I found the information stated the obvious. For example, I think working with flash to be one of the more challenging areas of being new to digital. There were some basic instructions and some pictures that would be in my waste basket not shown as some "cool" effect.
All in all this is a general text for someone who may never have been to a wedding and/or has very little exposure to wedding photography. I would not recommend this book to anyone above the amateur level.
Worst photography book I've tried.......2007-09-06
I find it hard to find anything to agree with the positive reviewers. After reviewing this book, I conclude that some photography books are just about selling books, not valuable instruction. This one does not provide anything but the most very basic input. If you are not completely new to photography, then this book is probably too basic for you.
I purchased this book because I have a couple of weddings booked as an assistant & 2nd shooter, and like you wanted something to "bone up" on that I may otherwise miss. I flipped thru each section, but decided to return the book instead of spending valuable time reading further. This book is so basic, covering the most basic camera functions and simple personal interactions, that it is not worth the time to read thoroughly. My teenage daughter has taken some high school basic photography classes, and politely commented that "this book is silly".
A wedding shoot is critical to the couple, and there are no 2nd chances for a re-shoot. If you really feel the need to cover the basics, I suggest one covering general photography elements, practicing, and returning to weddings after those become second nature. Although a different genre, I can recommend Michael Freeman's "Light & Lighting in Digital Photography".
Awesome Book!.......2007-09-04
I am new at wedding photography so I purchased this book. It is absolutely the best one I have read so far. It covers everything! Glen Johnson walks you through every aspect of the photography business. It is much more than a "wedding" photography book. It covers everything- from equipment to lighting to everything. I love it!!!!!
Glen Johnson knows what he's talking about..........2007-08-28
Very inspiring book and one thing I've noticed about Glen is he is all about helping others. Many photographers want to keep the secrets to themselves, but Glen let's all the good stuff out in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in Wedding Photography as he gives you such a wide range of information covering nearly every aspect of the wedding photography project to completion and gives several recommendations on current products on the market. I even noticed after reviewing Glen's website that he offers this book signed by him from his website. It's much more affordable here on Amazon, but it's different to get the signed version. My hat's off to Glen for an outstanding book.
I recommend this book to the non-traditional photographer. This would appeal more so to the photo journalist or the portrait journalist as this is Glen's photography style. Thanks for putting this book together Glen!

ASIN: 1592001084 |
Book Description
"Digital Family Photography" offers comprehensive and easy-to-follow advice on how to make the most of "people pictures" of all kinds: from simple but essential techniques to more advanced and challenging projects. People and families are easily the most popular subject for photographers, be it by traditional film or digital photography. This book embraces both image capture and post-production techniques, with the emphasis on working digitally. With full-color and a portrait layout, the photos in the book are truly brought to life. Aimed at those new to photography, this book is useful for anyone who has been enticed by the value, quality, and efficiency that digital cameras have to offer.
Customer Reviews:
Poor quality photos and instruction.......2004-02-27
I purchased the "Landscape" book by the same publisher and thought it was very good so I then purchased this book. Night and day! The photo and printing quality of this book is terrible. Most photos are so washed out or dark that you can't understand the point the author is making regarding instruction. Additionally, the photos themselves appear to be printed at around 100DPI or so and have banding, etc. . .
The instruction is not bad but given the poor quality of the photos and printing it is too hard to decipher what he is trying to say.

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-02-07
i was very disappointed in this book. i have been using digital for years now and my landscapes are turning out very good, however, my snapshots of kids and everyday events don't turn out so good. i thought i had finally found a book to help with this. however, the author spends so much time covering camera basics and fixing photos in photoshop. why does every camera "how to" book do this? i wish they would just stick to the subject. however, even the couple of chapters that were devoted to actually photographing your kids was not very helpful. she covered the rules of thirds, and a few lighting tips. that's about it. i was very disappointed in the material, and for the price, it just isn't worth it.
Great basic portrait guide.......2006-08-14
The author knows that professional portraiture involves many different things, from proper attire to posing, to lighting, and marketing. This book covers all the bases. If you're looking for a comprehensive introduction to portraiture of families, this book has what you need.
Great digital book.......2006-02-24
Kathleen Hawkins have created a great textbook for professional photographers in the children and family market. Kathleen's marketing ideas alone are worth twice what the book costs. It is definetly worthwhile.
Not for the experienced digital pro.......2005-08-09
My disappointment is that the book is geared for the photographer who is still using film (who are they?). It is helpful to those who have not made the transition yet but is redundant to those who have already been using digital and Photoshop. The upside: The photos are lovely, and the packaging and album layouts are great too.

Customer Reviews:
A Pretty Good Primer..........2007-01-14
Avid Made Easy is an interesting read for those new to non-linear editing and to the Avid system in particular. The author, Jamie Fowler, prepares you well with the history of NLE and Avid before you do your first exercise. However, torward the end of the book, your practice exercise is left unfinished despite the author's earlier promise to clean it up. Also, installing the companion disk can be a bit confusing. It's best to download and install Avid Free DV from the Avid website, then follow the book's directions for for installing the exercise and its related files from the companion CD. Other than that, Avid Made Easy is a great tool for learning the basics of the Avid editing system.

Book Description
Family Computer Fun: Digital Ideas Using Your Photos, Movies, and Music will give you ideas for dozens of fun projects to enjoy with your family. The book starts with a quick tour of what's needed for the projects in the book, which doubles as a guide to buying a new PC or products to enhance your current one.
Projects in the book include creating custom photos albums to share, editing photos to add effects or retouch, uploading home movies to edit and burn to DVDs, sharing video or photos over the Internet, and turning a PC into a home recording studio. Later chapters offer a quick guide to streaming video and audio to a TV and stereo in the living room.
The author creates each project with tools that are both affordable and easy-to-use, and finishes with pointers to more advanced software should you want to explore further. Unlike other books on digital media, the activities in Family Computer Fun are designed with the family in mind, with software that anyone can use and projects that will be fun for the entire family to explore together.
Customer Reviews:
your PC as a media centre.......2005-10-09
Bond shows how your PC can be an invaluable and fun part of your life, if you want to capture and manipulate pictures, video and audio. The idea is to transform the PC into a digital media centre. Now, to be sure, there has been a lot of hype about this kind of thing, from vendors. Here, you can see for yourself what is easily achievable by an average or new PC user.
Many of the comments in the first part of the book are directed towards a reader who might already have been taking traditional photos for years. (Decades?) Bond explains a photo editing package called PhotoShow. This can trivially remove redeye from your photos of people that you took with a flash, for example. With traditional photos, redeye was a constant affliction to be endured. But now, it is remarkably easy to remove. PhotoShow has many other features, of course. Like annotating a photo with text. Or rescaling and rotating the photo.
Later parts of the book discuss manipulating audio and video. Not surprisingly, these operations are more intricate than simply editing single images. But Bond explains how, with the right software, you can also understand and apply these ideas.
