This is a major collection of photographs by Nan Goldin, representing over 35 years' work. This significant body of work begins in the early 1970s with her "Dazzle Bag" portraits and her series of photographs on themes of maternity, family and landscapes. The book contains Goldin's new and recent photographs in narrative and thematic sequences such as "Landscapes", "Self-portraits", "Maternity, Heartbeat" (2001), "My French Family" (1999-2001) and "57 days" (2000), many of which are previously unpublished. It also contains some of the "drag queen" photos of the mid-1990s, the "Cookie Mueller" portfolio of 1989 and the "Ballad of Sexual Dependency" images from the 1980s. Goldin's early black-and-white photographs from the Boston years in the 1970s also form part of this substantial collection. Nan Goldin's photographs are intimate and compelling - they tell personal stories of relationships, friendships and identity, but at the same time chronicle different eras and the passage of time. Their subject matter ranges from drag queens and AIDS to the family, maternity and most recently, nature and landscapes. Laid out in chronological sequences by the artist, like a diary, the material is both candid and affirmative. In addition, a number of short essays are interspersed throughout the photographic sequences. Individually, these texts discuss different aspects or themes in Nan Goldin's work such as the narrative, love and gender politics, while also referencing particular works such as the "Ballad of Sexual Dependency" (1981-96). A conversation between the artist and Catherine Lampert, freelance curator, former director of the Whitechapel and close friend of Goldin, touches on the sources of her inspiration and her life as a prominent artist.

DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND is a lap-heavy, huge tome of the creative photographs of Nan Goldin, many of which have never before been published. Goldin is know throughout the museums of the world as a photographer who knows no barriers for her subject matter: AIDS victims, mental patients, transvestites, poor families, rural landscapes, constructed still lifes - these are but a few of the categories studied and captured by Goldin. For this full color volume Goldin selected the layout and the progression of sections, making the flow of the book even more fascinating; the book is one where she is both artist and curator and the result is a powerhouse of statement.
For devotees of Nan Goldin's work, this book is a must. And for viewers marginally approaching photography as an art form then look no further. A magnum opus of the work of one of America's more significant contemporary artists.

Fabulous.......2005-06-25
As a graduate of Jack Radcliffe's photography program and now one of his models, I have to say that Jack is one of the most remarkable people that I know. He is the most caring person this world possibly has and he shows this in his hospice work. He is truely so proud of this acomplishment and he should. I recently experianced hospice life with a relative and it was heart breaking. But these photographers show the heros of the hospice that give these folks a sense of peace and comfort in a time where they know things will not improve. I highly recommend this book. You wont be sorry.
hard to view.......2001-11-08
i'll admit its hard to look at but the way you get right there in it, is amazing, it's just photographed beautifully. Each photographers style was evident. I especially enjoyed Jack Radcliffes section because his more than any other, i felt was about life under harsh circumstances, but still about life more than death itself.
Hospice : A Photographic Inquiry.......2000-10-14
A book about a place where people go to die will not by definition be a easy book to pick up and glance through. The photographers, Nan Goldin et al, do a remarkable job bring these people to us in a situation none of us would want ot be in. There is compassion and dignity in situations which can all too often lend themselves to the snap and run mentality of today's press coverage. It is worth buying especailly if you have an interest in quality, non-sensational photography.

Urban delight.......2000-05-30
This book is the photographic equivalent to mythical eighties Dennis Cooper novel. Five American photographers, forerunners of their generation, each with a distinct style of his own yet sharing the same subject matters: urbanism, seperateness, violence, Aids, homosexuality, to name a few. These issues are dealt with through the use of portraits, mostly-urnban landscapes and youths. Though some shots are not as good as others, every artist here has at least 2 or 3 gems in his/her collection, and these gems make the book a must.

Very good Rhigting but only a few serious art photographers in this book all the others don't know anything about photography or art and the "visual" failure to pass the message of the concept they are dealing with at all!
There are a lot of much more better artists that deal with the same matters to choose from.
Is sade to see how the curators and academics that deal with art photography, follow the art dealers and PR people and they are failing on their mission and leading this wonderfull art of photography to pathetic places
one-sided view.......2006-06-21
to call this 'art photography now' is a bold move, and this collection is less a survey than an advertisement for a particular style of photography. the work doesn't vary much from artist to artist, and if you don't like color fictive constructions and digital manipulation then you probably won't like this book. as the trend of this type of large scale, color, set-up, advertising-influenced work fades, this book will seem a sad reminder of a rather lame period in photo history when the majority of galleries, critics, artists, and dealers joined forces to produce (like this title) little more than a shopping mall of trendy, elitist, high-priced commodity under the guise of art.
A trip to 80 (good) art galleries in a single book.......2006-05-08
It is difficult to find good contemporary photography overviews -- typically, you could go to galleries or museums for several years or buy a stack of art photography books and spend days going through them -- assuming you had a strong Art background. This book offers a nice alternative and it is one of the best overviews of contemporary fine art photography available.
Aperture, a respected photography publishing house, has beautifully produced this handsome book with 80 of what they consider to be the best living and working art photographers. The selection is broad, encompasses many areas and is well organized into 7 sections from Portrait to City. Several works from each artist are presented along with a short description of an artist's Work from a curator's perspective. Even more valuable are quotations from each artist describing their Work from their perspective. This alone makes the book worth owning.
Photographers you might know; Cindy Sherman, Thomas Ruff, Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Uta Barth, Joel Sternfeld, Thomas Demand and many others are alongside people you have probably never heard of but should get to know. The coverage of the cinematic, self exploration/psychological, conceptual and to some extent digital influences presented here should be thought provoking. Clearly, the "digitalness" of photography as a medium and all that implies -- interaction and collaboration, manipulation and realism, and authenticity and authority -- is growing in importance and will no doubt be better covered in the future as those artists emerge.
There are only two omissions that would have been interesting to see included; artists such as Gerhard Richter, best known for his painting and who uses photography extensively -- and some of the newest up and comers, like Idris Khan. To be fair, those areas are rich enough to support separate books and you should not let this keep you from buying this book. Overall, this is an excellent way to quickly learn about contemporary photography and you will not be disappointed.

i think this book is one of the best art books available on the market. Every section is divided by the artist and it's explained in a very complete way and very simple to understand at the same time...a real dilight to your mind and a strong pleasure to the eye!!!

it's not the first time for me to go throgh photograpy art books, and i have been into contemporary art and contemporary photography for many years. I can affirm that this book is one of the best and more interesting i have ever read... extremaly attractive and taken into great care!!!

In the intro to The Other Side, Nan refers to the Oscar Wilde saying that "who are who you pretend to be." Through the photography of those closest to her, those excruiciatingly beautiful people whose gender just happens to be ambiguous, Nan shows how our pretending seeps into every corner of our personas. I love this book!!

Nan Goldin captures what it's like to be human in a way that no one else can. Her friends---her family----feel pain and introspection and I felt lonely looking through the book but the rare moments of connection in a world where so many people are alone with their drug addiction, disease, unhappiness, are all the more moving.

It's really sad how Nan Goldin hasn't gottten a single intelligible review for her seminial work, "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency." Her incredibly self-brutalizing protrayl of her life, friends, lovers, are just the sort of photographs we take when we want memories to cut. Most of the photographs are candid, fleshy, and almost dirtied with color. People copulate, hurt, masturbate, alienate each other with the sort of urbane nonchalance that people confused in their own lives inflict on others. In one particular self-portrait, Nan Goldin records her battered face directly after being battered by her lover, her bloodied eye matching her pasty lipstick. That one photograph can rip you to shreds if you let it. Originally, Nan Goldin showed "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" in a slideshow format, which probably has a different feel than the book does. While some of the photos in the book were a little weak in the grain, most of the photos are beautifully reproduced.

I'm glad I didn't buy this book, now that I've seen it. Although the reproduction quality of the photographs is very good, the photographs themselves aren't interesting to me and are even a bit distressing.
I haven't seen the film(s) or exhibitions about Nan's work though. There is some information about her work on the web - take a look at Yahoo.

this is one of the best collections of color photography i have seen. nan and her friends are beautiful and scary and strong and fun and sad. i have seen the slide show and bought the book when it was reprinted. go out and buy it! END

This book accompanies an exhibition of Nan Goldin's photographs, drawn from the private collection of Gerry and David Pincus and jointly organized by the Palmer Museum of Art at The Pennsylvania State University and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Over the last thirty years, Goldin has attained international fame as a photographer who, building on the tradition of Robert Frank and Diane Arbus, has documented the lives of outsiders. But in Goldin's case, the outsiders are her bohemian friends, whom she depicts with poignant and sometimes brutal honesty.
Jonathan Weinberg's essay for this catalogue considers a number of Goldin's now-classic photographs as well as her more recent, almost Baroque forays into landscape. In contrast to most earlier writers on Goldin's work, who have emphasized its documentary character, Weinberg addresses the ways in which Goldin's photographs might be said to constitute "fantastic tales." Weinberg considers the narrative construction of Goldin's work from a double perspective—personal as well as critical—that complicates even as it enriches his interpretations.
