This is a true study guide and will help not only in preparation for exams but will help understanding the textbook better.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard by which All Obstetrics Texts are measured.......2004-07-15

There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics. Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics. Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals. Perhaps there are those who prefer their Obstetrics with a little voodoo. For those who want to know the most up-to-date scientifically based Obstetrics, Williams is your book!

4 out of 5 stars A great text book..........2007-01-02

I ordered this textbook for an MSW course, and it's wonderful. I love all the examples and the software that comes with it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Edition to a fantastic text.......2005-08-10

This new edition of the text once again proves that these authors are the masters of single subject research. I have used this text for five years in my graduate methods course and am completely satisfied with their coverage of the material of single subject research design. Just when a researcher thought it could not get any better, this new edition comes along with updates to the software.

Get this book.

1 out of 5 stars enough is enough.......2005-03-22

I was pleased to hear that this text had been assigned in a graduate research course at my graduate school of social work. I'm seriously disappointed. I would not recommend this text's continued use. It is excessively repetitive, constantly restating previous material (commonly referred to as 'rehashing'), and, as a sidebar, i can't help but mention an irritating habit of unnecessary references to material yet to come ('we'll talk about that more in chapter 14.'). The writing style is terribly wordy, and in a weighted, clunky pseudo-conversational style that rarely is effective in a textbook. The actual technical information is obscured in a constant river of verbiage, usually in page after page of solid block text, the least helpful format when learning technical information (or when subsequently searching for specific information or techniques). The result? It serves as a strong sedative. Finally, the authors repeatedly express apologies, in what eventually (by page 350) feels like an obsequious and cloying manner, for putting forward an empirical and accountable approach to clinical practice. The worst, though, is the repetition of material, as if the reader were an idiot. The sheer relentlessness of it is what is so galling, and at $100 bucks, neither affordable nor worth the investment. There are other texts out there with clearer, cleaner, more articulate prose, that are more respectful of the reader, and at half the price, such as the classic and affordable: Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings by Alan E. Kazdin. Ignore the pollyanna reviews above and below, and avoid this text, or if on the syllabus, protest and suggest an alternative.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in Practice Evaluation.......2003-11-13

Bloom, Fischer and Orme continue to make an unique contribution to improving practice in the human services by providing a road map by which practitioners can evaluate their effectiveness. I've been using their text book for over 15 years in teaching practice evaluation and in has been an invaluable help. The new edition has a CD Rom with SingWin, CAAP,and CAAS which I was able to install in Windows XP Home edition. You must install CAAS before CAAP for it to work. The sofware computerizes record keeping, score computation, and graph construction. I strongly reccommend this textbook for human services faculty.

    Book Description

The Closing of the American Mind, a publishing phenomenon in hardcover, is now a paperback literary event. In this acclaimed number one national best-seller, one of our country's most distinguished political philosophers argues that the social/political crisis of 20th-century America is really an intellectual crisis. Allan Bloom's sweeping analysis is essential to understanding America today. It has fired the imagination of a public ripe for change.

5 out of 5 stars The value of a liberal education........2007-07-08

"Men may live more truly and fully in reading Plato and Shakespeare than at any other time, because they are participating in essential being and are forgetting their accidental lives. The fact that this kind of humanity exists or existed, and that we can somehow still touch it with the tips of our outstretched fingers, makes our imperfect humanity, which we can no longer bear, tolerable. The books in their objective beauty are still there, and we must help protect and cultivate the delicate tendrils reaching out toward them through the unfriendly soil of students' souls. Human nature, it seems, remains the same in our altered circumstances because we still face the same problems, if in different guises, and have the distinctively human need to solve them, even though our awareness and forces have become enfeebled" (p. 380).

Allan Bloom (1930-1992) was a professor of philosophy and political science at the University of Chicago, and the subject of Saul Bellow's final novel, Ravelstein (2000). In his bestselling book, The Closing of the American Mind (1987), Professor Bloom draws from his training as a philosophical thinker and his long career as a teacher to describe "how higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students."

Summarizing Bloom's book in a short review is no easy task. He believes in "the good old Great Books approach" to education, and observes how students, in a culture of movies and rock music, have "lost the practice of and the taste for reading." He not only believes the high incidence of divorce has left students less critical in their thinking, but argues their lax sexual mores deprive students of what Plato described as the "erotic" element in education--the element of excitement, mystery, and longing inherent to a liberal education. Bloom believes the "openness" of cultural relativism--the practice of valuing the opinion of each person equally--undermines critical thinking with indifference, devalues the study of languages, philosophy, and science, and deprives students from searching for the truth that leads to a higher life. In his book, Bloom is concerned with nothing less than "the state of our souls."

Professor Bloom's argument is carefully reasoned, and reveals a great mind at work. The Closing of the American Mind is truly profound. Although it was published twenty years ago, it remains relevant nonetheless and should be considered essential reading in understanding the value of a liberal education in our society.

    4 out of 5 stars Necessary Questions.......2007-05-22

This was the most difficult fun and knowledge seeking free time reading I have done in years. At times Dr. Bloom was speaking to me, freely articulating my own disappointment with the academy. His comments about the free fall of traditional inquiry and the current status of the social sciences and humanities was piercing. Since I was born in the 50s, the transformations he spoke of that became so apparent to him in the 80s were experienced in the public school and university careers of those of us born in the first decade or so after WWII.

In spite of the delight in reading Dr. Bloom's astute observations of those years, in no time, the next pages would lose and confuse me, forcing a re-read and consultation of other sources. Ironically, this exemplified the point he was making since those areas had to do with philosophy. (Plato is next.) Nonetheless, this is a marvelous work of incredible intellectual depth by a very scholarly man who was aware, and somewhat saddened, by the trends of his times.

The book is long, requires real dedication, but in my opinion it was well worth the read. The first two thirds of the book seem as if they are not related to one another, but then, by the last part, especially the chapter The Sixties, all the detail about the German School, Marcuse, Plato, converge. Although the 60s seemed groundbreaking and exciting to the youth of its time (including me), Bloom ventures to state, quite convincingly, that it was void of intellectual gravitas due a highly stylized, yet simplistic view of its philosophical and historical context.

Dr. Bloom also greatly delves into the role of the university and his founded fears of the compromise of the special status of inquiry in the academy being wedded to popular culture and politics. He repeatedly asserts that there's a lack of support, in his experience even among some professors, to uphold the bigger questions of existence, philosophy, religion, science, culture - what have you - that transcend popular culture and politics.

On the topic of politics, one might be tempted to state that Dr. Bloom took sides, and that his opus has left-right implications. It may have appeared a bit critical of what is commonly thought of as the left, but the notion of being "progressive", of throwing off tradition, of being less discriminate about what is good or evil, ugly or beautiful, right or wrong, tends to be the territory of the modern left. I never felt he was simply being opinionated, but that he just attributed his assessment of the late 20th century academia to certain movements and philosophies that permeated many areas of the university. Dr. Bloom greatly laments what the university has become because he clearly loved the institution and believed it was indispensable to the knowledge and mysteries of mankind.

    5 out of 5 stars See Evan Sayet's analysis..........2007-05-19

Evan says that Prof Bloom's book influenced him, but Evan has expanded on the reasons why Modern Liberals act like they do.

I recommend everyone watch Evan's talk.

You can find it at YouTube by searching on "Evan Sayet". Choose "How Modern Liberals Think". It's phenomenal.

    2 out of 5 stars Nice Intro..........2007-04-24

The best part about this book was the intro. In fact all you need to understand what the late Mr. Bloom was trying to put forth is in the introduction.

The rest of the book is a chore to read. The confusing and tedious writing style leads to a lot of re-reading of sentences to figure out the point the author is trying to make. Someone should have counseled Mr. Bloom that "Brevity is the soul of wit."

5 out of 5 stars An analysis of historical importance.......2007-03-26

This is a truly outstanding analysis of what went wrong with America in our generation, and how the erosion of our freedom accompanies the decomposition of our culture.

That said, let's get the other editorial reviews off the back page and up front where folks can see them:

The New York Times Book Review:
An unparalleled reflection on today's intellectual and moral climate....That rarest of documents, a genuinely profound book.

    The New York Times:
Remarkable....hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy.

The Wall Street Journal, William Kristol:
Brilliant....No other book combines such shrewd insights into our current state....No other book is at once so lively and so deep, so witty and so thoughtful, so outrageous and so sensible, so amusing and so chilling....An extraordinary book.

The Washington Post Book World, S. Frederick Starr:
Rich and absorbing....A grand tour of the American mind.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best advanced text on the market.......2005-10-06

This textbook is a very detailed and very up-to-date exposition of Neuroscience, and in my view, for the more advanced student it is one of the best books out there. What it is NOT is a simple, concise introduction for people who are studying the nervous system for the first time. If you are taking an entry-level Neuroscience course you are likely to be overwhelmed by the amount of detail, and, like some of the other reviewers who gave this book a bad rap, might blame the book for the fact that you can only take in so much detail in a first sitting, and fail to see the forest for all the trees. So if you are new to Neuroscience, read something like Bear et al "Neuroscience - Exploring the Brain" first, and only once you have absorbed that, turn to this beautifully detailed book for a much closer look at the subject. The chapters on Vision by Clay Reid and the Hearing chapters by Brown in this book are quite simply and without a doubt among the best textbook chapters on these topics anywhere, (and much better than anything you will find in Kandel!)

4 out of 5 stars Most up-to-date text on the market.......2005-03-28

I'm a clinical academic neurologist with an MS in neuroscience some 25 years ago, and I decided to read through this text as a means of bringing myself up-to-date in the field. This textbook accomplished that task admirably. I will agree with some critics that parts of it were far too detailed, especially the sections on molecular neurobiology, where too often things got bogged down with discussions of a protein's biophysical properties, for example. Another caveat is that there are some production defects--the pages around 200 are not in the right order, and I found a few diagrams that were mislabelled. But the illustrations are really gorgeous. I've made extensive use of the CD, which contains all the figures and their legends, for Power Point presentations to the neurology residents I teach. I would suggest that future editions of the CD incorporate some videos and animated diagrams that could better illustrate some concepts, e.g., details of signal transduction, which is REALLY complex and was hard to follow in the text. But Kandels text is now several years older and as the pace of neuroscience is so incredibly rapid, this text contains more of the latest info.

    2 out of 5 stars Too detailed.......2002-05-29

This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.
The smart money would go with the Kandel who clearly defines
his purpose at the outset of his classic book.
(I notice that the reviewer ,who bestowed the text 4 stars, and the author both call San Diego their home.)

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Fundamental!.......2001-04-22

I was rather lucky to take my chances and go-for-a-buy for this title instead of the much more cited "Kandel-Fourth Edition"... The book is really awesome, well-written and edited, with many good first-time-seen illustrations. It spans the whole field of contemporary Neuroscience (from biochemical to cognitive and clinical) with extreme efficacy and reference. The authors did a great job integrating the contents of each section with clarifying examples and extensive references, making it ideal even for new-comers. As a medical student with research interests in this vast field, I was very pleased with my decision to buy this textbook.

5 out of 5 stars A must in any med-school.......2000-08-20

This book can make any person understand the basic aspects of Pathology, it requires a good level of Histology knowledge ( not more than a good approach of the previous course ). Excellent images and explanations make this issue a good purchase.

The only drawback I've found is the fancy words the authors use to define something it's easy to understand, but after all I think it's a vey good choice.

    Book Description

The Power of Appreciative Inquiry describes a new strategy that inspires people and brings about a higher performance level in any organization. This method encourages people to study, discuss, learn from, and build on what works well when they are at their best, rather than focusing on what's going wrong.

The theory, practice, and spirit of this approach to organizational change is described in plain language. The authors provide guidelines for defining the change agenda, initiative, or project; forming the "steering team"; and launching an organization-wide kick off. Case histories demonstrate how organizations can attain sustained positive change by studying their strengths.

    5 out of 5 stars A Life-Changer for Me.......2006-12-12

Appreciative Inquiry is a process that I feel is one of the most powerful there is for - as the subtitle of this book says - offering a practical tool to create positive change. It's easy to talk in abstract terms about change and improving the world, but it isn't often we come across a way to actually make it happen in concrete terms. AI is one of those tools. This book offers a very thorough guide to the history, mindset, methodology and diverse potential use of this powerful process. In addition, it was instrumental in the startup and methods that I now use in my own coaching, consulting and training firm. It was both an inspiration and a way of approaching the world that has helped me grow tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars The right balance of principles and methodology.......2006-11-03

As an OD professional, I own a dozen different books on AI. This book is the one I most frequently buy for my business leader clients because it offers a great balance between principles and methodology. The clear writing, ongoing case examples and useful tips make "The Power of Appreciative Inquiry" a powerful resource for consultants and managers interested in putting AI into immediate practice.

    5 out of 5 stars Appreciative Inquiry.......2006-09-28

This is an excellent book. It is very readable while it explains the theory and foundations of AI. There are examples of its use in the for profit and non profit world. I have been involved in strategic planning for several year with non profits and this is one process that folks get excited about. I would highly recommend this book and "The Appreciative Inquiry Summit" to get a practical outline on how the process can be put into practice with groups and organziations.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Practical.......2006-05-03

As a professional organization development consultant for over 20 years, I have found The Power of Appreciative Inquiry extremely helpful, not only in change consultation but in many other aspects of working with human systems. I recommend it highly.

1 out of 5 stars beware of the positive reviews.......2005-06-17

I bought this book, and it is full of really obvious statements that are not backed by any meaningful examples. A requirements based analysis would have been a lot more useful.

    5 out of 5 stars World Traveler.......2007-07-30

The book is in excellent condition and has been most helpful in planning a trip to Prague, Krakow, and Budapest. Most of the suggested middle-range hotels had already booked which is a good indication that the guide book had good selections.

5 out of 5 stars A top quality guide for business and pleasure travelers alike........2007-07-09

Eastern Europe is Lonely Planet's comprehensive travel guide compiled by thirteen authors who spent 4732 combined hours of on-the-road research, covering the nations of Albania, Belarus, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Each nation's section features maps, festivals and events, specific dangers and annoyances for travelers, a concise mini-history, recommended places to sleep, eat, and see, and much more. "Bulgarians shake their head 'yes' and nod their head 'no'... If in doubt, ask 'da ili ne?' (yes or no?)." At nearly one thousand pages in length, Eastern Europe strives to squeeze in everything a world tourist absolutely needs to know about a staggering diversity of nations, cultures, and customs, and is a top quality guide for business and pleasure travelers alike.

    4 out of 5 stars USEFULL RESUME.......2007-06-08

You won't find the whole information of those countries, but it has an excelent synthesis.

    I'm happy with my purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars 2007 Edition: Well Updated & Comprehensive!.......2007-03-27

Not all Lonely Planet guides are equal, but I found this one to be very good!
It covers pretty much all the former socialist countries westwards from Russia, including the Baltic states, Central Europe, the Balkans, Ukraine, and even obscure, very rarely visited Belarus and Moldova.
It already has a separate country chapter for Montenegro, which only became independent in the summer of 2006!
Inside, you will find all the details that can be expected from this series: in addition to the usual background info on history and culture as well as listings of recommended sights and activities, LP does provide useful practical details like prices and contact details of accomodation options as well as fares and journey times for public transport. These seemed pretty accurate to me, though are bound to change within the lifespan of this book.
The detail provided about each country described of course can't compete with single-country guides, but is probably sufficient for most people planning to visit several countries in one trip. As a rule, there are enough places described to fill at least 2 weeks in each country. In comparision to LP's Europe on a Shoestring which covers the whole continent but goes into more detail about the more visited Western European countries, this one has about 3 times more info on Eastern European ones.
I would highly recommend this book for both those who are still in the planning stages and need info to decide which countries in the region to visit, and for actual use on the road to those planning to visit several countries on one trip.
Of course, if you only want to concentrate on 2-3 countries only, you may find individual country guides more detailed - though right now quite possibly less up to date! LP and Rough Guides both publish such guides to the more popular countries in this region, while Bradt covers even the more obscure ones like Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia or Slovakia as separate titles.
For the region as a whole, this book is the one to get for sure though!

4 out of 5 stars Good on average, but lacking in some respects.......2005-08-25

The guide is up to LP's usual standard, which is good, with good information regarding the backgrounds of countries, cities and regions. Also, almost every town mentioned has maps and plenty of accomodation and restaurant suggestions.

However, it is incomplete or simply incorrect in some areas:
    - the costs of accomodations and places to eat are noted in euro's, and, as the exchange rates have changed since the time of writing, there are quite significant increases in costs (in euro's). This can be a setback when counting on this financially
    - some maps are somewhat incorrect; I came across this twice when walking from a train station to the centre of town (real distance was much greater than the distance mentioned on the map)
    - when buying train tickets in Eastern Europe, the procedure for seat reservations differs from country to country. This wasn't mentioned for instance in the case of Bulgaria: there you have to buy a train ticket AND pay for a supplement for a seat reservation (regular tickets only buy transport, no seating)
    - train connections were displayed differently when comparing one country to another; in some information would be in the city chapters, in others it would be in the country directory. Also, the amount of information displayed varies greatly.
    - Often people will travel to Istanbul as well as lots of countries mentioned in this guide, or maybe Greece as well (I went from Istanbul through Northern Greece to Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Hungary, Austria and Slovakia), and nothing in those countries is covered. Perhaps omitting Greece is logical, but at least a couple of pages on Istanbul (geographically in Europe) would benifit the traveller.

And, my big disagreement with practically any LP guide is that makes judgments about destinations, instead of merely describing what is there. These judgments may fall into the liking of the mainstream traveller, but are not a success for everyone.

To wrap it up: this guide is great value if you're travelling to or through Eastern Europe, but especially in the transport area: ask around and don't rely solely on this guide.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous strip that is sadly gone from the papers.......2007-05-10

Thankfully we can still get his books of Bloom County and Outland and of course, his current iteration, Opus.

I have always loved Berkely's quirky look at life, politics, love and what not through the eyes of Milo, Opus, Cutter John and others throughout the years and when I bought this book, I would read 2-3 pages, often before turning out the light at night and would find myself laughing at much of the strips. That's how good they are, even now some 20 years later and I recall reading many of then when they were running in the papers. While some of the strips show their age a little, the strip is as still timeless now as when they were originally conceaved. That's a rare feat in my book.

While it's by no means all of his Bloom County strips, it's a good collection of some of the best and that alone is worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, cheap black & white printing of a great book.......2005-10-27

Despite what the item description says, there are no color pages in this cheap reprinting. The pages are printed only in black and white, and are printed in very poor quality. What a shame, because the book itself is fantastic. I have an original printing of this book and love it. I ordered this reprint as a gift and had to return it because of the poor print quality. I wish I had noticed the other reviews about this problem (listed below) before I wasted my time and money!

5 out of 5 stars Babble on and on and on.......2004-07-19

Bloom County is on my short list of all-time favorite comics. The original form, before short-lived "Outland" or the current "Opus", is long gone, though. Picking up this book was a wonderful piece of nostlagia.

The series peaked some time in the early 80s, and "Babylon" offers a sample of that time. I had forgotten how topical it was, full of references to then-current supermodels, presidents, movies, and sitcoms. Despite that, much of the humor has aged well. Milo's anxiety closet, for example, never needs to end. Various bogey-men (and -women) will reside there for their times, and move on. The anxiety will always be there, however, no matter how silly it looks to everyone else.

Even a book this size can't capture every strip in the five years (82-6) that it covers. That means that some of my favorite characters, like winsome Pistachio, barely even had cameo appearances. I'll take what I can get, though, and this is a pleasant sample.

If you ever liked any strip comic, you liked Bloom County or will like it. Maybe the 80s were before your time, but the characters will still look right up to date. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best of the Bloom County collections........2004-04-13

This book is an overview of the first five years of the strip, ranging from the early strips in which the focus is mostly on Milo, through the introductions of Binkley, Bobbi, Cutter John, Opus, Oliver Wendell Jones, Steve Dallas, and finally, Bill The Cat. Personally, I've always had a preference for the early, pre-Bill The Cat strips; I could deal with the silliness inherent in Opus and Oliver's anthropomorphic computer, but Bill just seemed one step over the line. But I know that he's very popular, and he's here, too. There are a few strips here that were reprinted from the previous three collections, but most of this material is NOT reprints. Of course, much of the humor will be completely incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't politically aware during the '80s, but I suspect that even for such a (hopefully) young person, there's plenty here to enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Full color? I must be colorblind........2003-10-16

Buyer beware: the editorial review states that this book contains eighty full-color pages, but it doesn't. It contains eighty pages that obviously were at one time or another in color, but which are now a messy conglomeration of grays and whites, much like something you'd expect to see coming out of a low-grade fax machine.

Many years ago, I read another copy of this book that did, in fact, contain eighty full-color pages, so I know the pages were in color at some point. However, the only colors on the book I received from Amazon.com are on the front and back covers.
