5 out of 5 stars Loving it.......2007-01-30

I love this huge book. It gave me background on the artists that I wasn't expecting, and discovered new artists that I hadn't seen before. Covers a wide spectrum of styles too. It's my #1 coffee-table book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-01-20

An absolutely brilliant book. It bridges the gap between coffee table book and text book. An excellent overview of pinup art with glorious reproductions of the original pinup girls.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pin-Up Art from a Bygone Era.......2004-12-23

This coffee table book is a good cross-section of sexy pin-up art of a bygone era that knew that showing less was more. These renderings are definitely more enticing than a lot of today's artists who don't leave anything to the imagination by showing a girl spread-eagle on the hood of a car.

Definitely a "must-buy" or at least a "must-peruse" the next time you see it at a bookstore or on someone's shelves.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Collection of Art & Artists.......2003-06-02

This is one of the finest collections of pin-up art from the talented artists that brought these beautiful women to life. These were very risque for their time but they were a true celebration of women. This is the kind of open mindedness and genuine appreciation missing from today's society. Women are wonderful, intelligent, beautiful people and life would be a tragedy without them. There...I said it!

5 out of 5 stars From The Garage To The Coffee Table.......2003-02-04

This is an excellent overview of the genre, on an artist-by-artist basis, from the classic era of the mid-twentieth century. All of the artists here are deserving of recognition, though only a handful of them are truly well-known and adequately documented in print elsewhere. All of the many artists here are well-represented; the reproduction is flawless, and the commentary is intelligent and well-researched. The original edition is my point of reference here, so I can't vouch for this one fully, but it appears to have maintained the integrity of the earlier printing and is a very handsome production as well.

Book Description

Careful planning, camaraderie, reliable weapons — these were the WWII GI’s necessities. Pinups provided a different kind of support, mentally transporting American soldiers from the perilous front lines into the accommodating arms of gorgeous, nude, or barely clothed women. Featuring art by such legendary pinup masters as Gil Elvgren, Billy DeVorss, Rolf Armstrong, and Zoe Mozert, this colorful collection commemorates the strange blend of innocence and erotica that characterized the 1940s pinup. Louis K. Meisel has gathered over 300 of the era’s most striking images, arranged into six different themes from Nudes to Swimsuit and Seaside to Indian Maidens, Pirates, and Gypsies. Meisel’s introduction expertly examines the idealized settings and dreamy drawings of a uniquely American icon.

I enjoyed this book. I only wish that it would be bigger and longer. A great bathroom book

4 out of 5 stars A celebratory look at a classic and risqué American art form.......2007-01-11

When someone else mentioned this book was small, they weren't kidding...to give you a frame of reference, the dimensions are slightly less than that of a standard DVD case. I suppose I can't be too critical about this point as Amazon does have the dimensions posted on their site, and I just neglected to notice this when purchasing.

Published by a company called Collectors Press, Jeepers Peepers! A Gallery of American Pin-Up Art is about 175 pages long, and about 160 of those pages feature pin-up art from the 1930s through the 1960s, presenting roughly over 300 tantalizing images divided into seven different categories (the editorial review states six, but I counted seven). The categories included are as follows (in order);

1. Nudes
2. Playful & Sporty
3. Swimsuit & Seaside
4. Exotic
5. Indian maidens, Pirates (yarrgh) & Gypsies
6. Sheer Beauties (lingerie)
7. Glamour

Up front there's a six-page introduction written by Louis K. Meisel, who's apparently `owner and director of one of the largest and oldest contemporary art galleries in the world'. The introduction is very informative as Mr. Meisel certainly seems to know his stuff (unlike me). My favorite quote from this section is as follows;

"There was no problem with political correctness; feminism was decades in the future. The pin-up girl was how girls and women wanted to look and how men and boys wanted them to look."

As far as the images, they're presented cleanly and in a very professional manner. The paper stock is decent and glossy, allowing the images to shine. As I mentioned earlier there's over 300 images crammed into about 160 pages, so sometimes you'll have one, two, or even three prints on a single page. There's also a concerted effort to identify the particular artist, the date, and title of the work (when possible), which is about the only other text in the book beside the aforementioned intro.

A few things I noticed while perusing through the book...

Apparently it wasn't uncommon for alluring women to get their skirts caught on everyday objects, resulting in said garment riding up to reveal that which we're normally not meant to see. One example would be the act of using a ladder to put something (i.e. books) on a shelf. Ladies beware, as not to catch your hem on one of the rungs when you're coming back down (ladders seemed particularly fiendish devices to operate)!

Another interesting phenomena...back in the day, when an attractive woman was walking her dog while her arms burdened with groceries or some such thing, there was the extreme possibility of having the naughty, mischievous pooch tangling its leash about its owners legs, thereby causing the woman's undergarment to fall about her ankles, followed by a gust of wind coming along (perhaps from a passing bus) and popping the poor woman's skirt up just enough to reveal a healthy pair of gams (and perhaps then some).

A variant on this would be a similar woman, arms burdened with whatnot, trying to exit a telephone booth, only to have her skirt get caught in the door! Oh my!

Then, of course, we have the poor woman at the bowling alley...just as she's chucking her ball down the lane her underpants fall down about her ankles, right at the same time her skirt is blown slightly upward by, I suppose, the air pressurized hand dryer located by the ball return. How many pins did she end up knocking down? Who cares?

My favorite section of the book is the Playful & Sporty portion, as it presents various situations as the ones listed above, most with a similar tone, that being of the `oops, look what happened to me!' variety. As if those kinds of things ever happen in real life (maybe they do, but sadly, never in my presence).

I should probably mention this was sort of my introduction into the world of pin-up art, as while I've been aware of its existence, this is the first book I've purchased exclusively devoted to the subject. That being said I'm sure there's better books out there in relation to the material, but in terms of a general and economical introduction I think this worked out well as it covered a number of different themes along with presenting works by a decent number of artists over a healthy period of time. The flipside? The prints presented are often on the `smallish' side, especially those where two or three appear on the same page. All in all the positives outweighed the negatives, and even given that which I know now (with regards to the size), I'd still have bought the book.

5 out of 5 stars A solid diversity.......2006-09-24

JEEPERS PEEPERS! A GALLERY OF AMERICAN PIN-UP ART receives a fine introduction by New York gallery owner Louis K. Meisel, whose gallery specializes in pinup artwork by top artists from the 1930s through the 60s, as it provides a gorgeous set of color pinup illustrations by a wide range of artists. These don't just come from calendars, but are from commercial art, wartime posters, and more, going beyond the usual pinup collection focus to display a solid diversity of models and approaches to the pinup.

3 out of 5 stars Thanks to Brown & Bigelow.......2006-07-17

I think it's only worth buying if you want an inexpensive introduction to the art of the pin-up. There are about two hundred and sixty paintings included but unfortunately they are crammed into a 6.5 inch by 5 page size with many three to a page (sort of large thumbnails) and this is the problem with all of the Collector Press mini books, they are too small to really get the best out of the subject. Other books reprint consumer ads in this small size!

Another slight annoyance with this book is that it concentrates on artists from the twenties to the forties with a few from the fifties, so no Al Moore, Bill Medcalf, Freeman Elliot and no giants of the genre, Vargas or Petty! In fact the artists that are included seem to be mostly the ones that Collector Press have already published books about.

Where would pin-up art be today without the foresight of calendar printer Brown & Bigelow to more or less create the concept and print millions and millions of girlie pictures that could even be used to tell the day and date especially in garages and light industrial units across America. Dozens of pictures in the book are from their calendars. Well done B&B!

Much better I think to search out author Louis Meisel's definitive book 'The Great American Pin-Up'. You even have two to choose from: the chunky coffee table version (ISBN 3822884979) and the less costly reduced size (ISBN 3822817015) both are well designed and printed with over nine hundred pictures by every American artist up to the seventies.

5 out of 5 stars A NOSTALGIC LOOK AT PIN-UP ART .......2006-07-03

Before magazines like Playboy came along the ideal dream woman for men to enjoy was usually provided by a bevy of talented pin-up artists in magazines and calendars. Pin-up art has enjoyed a tremendous resurgence in popularity over the past decade but "Jeepers Peepers" from Collectors Press presents the men...and women...who got it all started back in the 1930's. The book begins with a short history of pin-up art and introduces us to some of the legends of the field such as Rolf Armstrong, Earl Moran, Alberto Vargas, Zoe Mozert, and perhaps the greatest of all, Gil Elvgren. The book presents 176 pages of their stunning art covering various subjects such as nudes, sports, swimsuit, Indian maidens & pirates, exotic, and glamour.

What you get in these pages is really far more interesting than you get in photographs. What stands out especially is the use of color and shadow that you simply don't get in a mere photograph. There is Edward D' Arcona's magnificent 1930's nude redhead lying on a divan by candlelight that is simply breathtaking. And Zoe Mozert (one of the few female pin-up artists) provides "bubbles" with a gorgeous nude blonde playfully blowing bubbles from a pipe.

Perhaps no pin-up artist was more playful than Art Frahm who had a whole series of pin-up that he did that found his female subjects caught, literally with their panties down...around their ankles, usually with several amused men looking on. Much of the work in the Exotic sections comes from the 20's and 30's when American's fascination with places like Egypt and the Orient were at an all-time high and reflected in works like Armstrong's "The Enchantress" showing a striking Egyptian woman dressed only in sheer silks.

The chapter on Glamour truly shows off its women in all their glory, dressed in beautiful gowns and adorned with fabulous jewels and other accessories, all looking like Hollywood starlets out for the big movie premiere. Billy DeVorss has a magnificent piece of a blonde in a dazzling red gown, taking a moments rest after an exhausting evening.

Jeepers Peepers is really a looking glass into decades long past and into the styles and humor of the day. While there is still pin-up art today, sadly that sense of humor and innocence is long lost but still lives on in this great book.

While there certainly are some very nice images in this short book there are also some cheap nude photos that are not that well done. Also this book was to expensive. For its reletively small amount of content it shouldnt be any more than 15 to 20 bucks.

5 out of 5 stars A BIT OF THE HARD STUFF, PLEASE!.......2005-10-04

This is the third volume in SQP's Erotic collection of art, photography, and comic strip art. The Artcore books are decidedly more explicit than most of the material from SQP and as such is for mature adults only. What certainly sets the Artcore series apart is its eclectic blend of different forms of erotic material. Robi is Co-owner of the German comic book publishing house "Schwarzer Turm" which publishes translated versions of famous comic books such as "Usagi Yojimbo" as well as comics of German artists. Alraune is an explicit comic written by Robi with art by Toni Gries. A short Alraune strip leads off this volume. Next is the photo section featuring nude model Jana who has posed for erotic artist Drew Posada. This is a 12 page, very explicit spread featuring this beautiful, blonde model. The photography is first-rate and the close-ups are brilliantly clear.

The last two-thirds of Artcore feature erotic pin-up art from some of the top talents in the business including John Hul, Lorenzo DiMauro, Sonia Roji, Marcus Gray, Pete Tapang, Cane Hoyer and more. If you've never seen the work of Erik Drudwyn he's perhaps the most dazzling of the modern erotic artist whose work is photo-realistic genius. Drudwyn provides four painting including the eye-popping piece called "Stardust" featuring a red hot blonde virtually shimmering in all her glory.

Oliver Schramm provides four darkly haunting, black & white pieces and Andreas Raufeisen provides six pages of erotic bondage art. Finally Michael Dutkiewicz, another top talent provides not only the cover to Artcore Volume 3, but a half-dozen interior paintings including "Solar Flare" featuring a nude fire-eater and the self-explanatory "Pole Dancer". This is truly an international production. The book is 80 pages in full color printed on heavy, glossy stock. This is definitely the stronger stuff but a very polished presentation.

      Book Description

A collection of 1950s & 1960s pin-up art spotlighting the inimitable creator of Torchy.

The Pin-Up Art of Bill Ward continues Fantagraphics' dedication to showcasing the best of the classic pin-up artists. Culling through thousands of images, editor Alex Chun has selected the best of Ward's Conte crayon pin-ups, including many of his infamous telephone girls, many of which have not seen print in almost half a century.

When Ward passed away in 1998, he left behind a body of work that spanned six decades and by all accounts, more than 10,000 pin-up cartoon illustrations. Though he is best known for creating comics' Golden Age blonde bombshell Torchy in the 1940s, Ward's strongest work was produced in the late 1950s and early 1960s for the Humorama line of digest magazines.

In those countless cheap and long forgotten men's humor magazines, Ward's voluptuous "girly" drawings shared the pages with photos of Bettie Page and Mamie Van Doren, and pin-up cartoons by the likes of Archie's Dan DeCarlo and Playboy magazine's Jack Cole.

Thumbing through those digests, it quickly becomes evident that Ward was Humorama's dominant pin-up cartoon artist. His mastery of the Conte crayon allowed him to produce unparalleled textures, including the wonderful sheen on satiny curve-hugging dresses and on black thigh-high stockings that became Ward trademarks.

Ward's other trademark, of course, was his penchant for drawing extremely well endowed women accentuated by tiny waists, and whether playing the role of office secretaries, arm candy at cocktail parties or vamping it up in a boudoir, his women played to multiple fetishes adorned in opera-length gloves, lacy lingerie, and five-inch stiletto heals. Sometimes bawdy, but never tawdry, Ward's top-heavy Humorama women always managed to maintain their allure, innocence and glamour that made Torchy so popular.

The Pin-Up Art of Bill Ward is presented in the same attractive sotfcover format as The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo and The Pin-Up Art of Bill Wenzel.

For those who can't get ahold of the hardcover, now-sold-out _The Glamour Girls of Bill Ward_ (also edited by Alex Chun) or who can't afford the huge _The Wonderful World of Bill Ward_ (published by Taschen), this is a cheap, readily available alternative with enough of Ward's classic glamour girls to satisfy all but the most hard-core, completist fan of Ward's work. The book is published in trade-paperback format, so the illustration reproductions are not as big as in the other two books, but the quality is quite satisfactory.

As he did in _Glamour Girls_, Chun has chosen to focus on the art that Ward is most famous for, and the art that Ward himself loved the best; the voluptuous, elegantly dressed, Ekbergesque (as in Anita Ekberg, one of the inspirational models for Ward's beauties) lovelies that populated the pages of so many men's magazines in the 1950's and 1960's - and not the raunchier work that he did in his later years, much of which he did strictly for the fee. These classic cartoons, by contrast, were done as much for love as for money, and it shows; there's an elegant lushness in them that doesn't show up in his later X-rated work. The selection includes a healthy number of Ward's (in)famous "telephone girls". While some of the cartoons and drawings chosen for this book are the same as in _Glamour Girls_, many of them are new to book publication; thus, if you really love Ward's girls, you'll want to get all three of the books that are currently in print. Definitely a "must have" for fans of pinup art.

5 out of 5 stars STILL HOT AND HUMOROUS AFTER FIFTY YEARS.......2007-04-16

If you're a baby-boomer or older, chances are you've seen Bill Ward's art, even if you didn't necessarily know the name. Ward was one of the premiere and pioneering artists of what came to be known as Good Girl Art in the 40's and 50's. Good Girl Art refers to those comics depicting attractive women in various stages of undress or, quite often, in some form of bondage. These covers were quite popular in both pulp magazines and comic books of the era and are highly prized among collectors today.

Ward's most famous creation was "Torchy" Todd, the sexy blonde bombshell who made her first appearance in the mid-1940's. Torchy's run in comics was cut short by the crusade against sex and violence in comics in the 1950's. Leaving comics, Ward moved on to work for editor Abe Goodman's Humorama line of magazines that included titles such as Gee-Whiz, Romp, Snappy, Laugh Riot, and more. There he began his prolific run of sexy one-page cartoons featuring his stunning Good Girl Art.

The Pin-up Art of Bill Ward from Fantagraphics packs 260 pages of these classic one panel pin-up cartoons into the book. The Ward female of these cartoons is classic 1950's pin-up: large breasts, thin waist, wide hips, and a round bottom. The classic hourglass figure complete with the pouty lips and eyes that can make any man melt. These women are bawdy and busty and make no apologies for utilizing their physical assets. Fetishists will love Ward's hilarious series of spanking cartoons, which are often girl-on-girl. In one, an angry boss with a black eye is spanking his secretary and telling her, "This will teach you to let my wife catch you sitting on my lap!" In another, a bank President is showing his gorgeous blonde customer what the penalty is at his bank for overdrawing her account.

Among the other cartoons in the book is Ward's series of telephone girl gags. These generally feature one of his gorgeous models lying on a bed or sofa in a negligee or other type of lingerie, talking on the phone. There's also a fair share of Ward's burlesque stripper cartoons. In one, two men are ogling a dancer clad only in panties and pasties. One exclaims, "This is one thing television will never replace!"

Wardss pin-ups are truly the 50'sand 60's American male view of the perfect female. These classic cartoons and drawings have lost none of their humor even after some fifty years.

Typical for a Bill Ward book, this contains a terrific representation of his gorgeous pinup work. The main drawback of this volume is the rather small size, but the great selection of artwork mostly makes up for that. Recommended for any fan of Ward or pinup art.

5 out of 5 stars Dangerous curves ahead.......2007-03-01

Now that Alex Chun's first book on Bill Ward is sold out Fantagraphics have wisely decided there is a market for a cheaper edition. This is not a straight reprint of the original, 'The Glamour Girls of Bill Ward' (ISBN 1560975318) which was a large size portfolio edition, beautifully printed. This current title is much smaller with an edited intro from the original but what looks like a different selection of art. Still good value if you like Bill's art.

Considering that he can only really be considered on the fringes of quality girly art it is amazing that three books of his output have been published in the last three years. Ward claims to have drawn thousands of pin-ups over the years so I expect there will be more titles in the future.

The two from Fantagraphics are good but Eric Kroll's The Wonderful World of Bill Ward, King of the Glamour Girls (Various)with its chunky size, comprehensive illustrated biography and hundreds of pin-ups must really be the last word on Ward.

With over 900 illustrations, The Great American Pin - Up is one of the most comprehensive studies of the genre to appear anywhere.

Taschen's now out-of-print homage to the great artists has been a godsend for sourcing artists and their styles. These lost masterpieces of calendar art have been admired but tossed aside for decades; Leave it to outstanding art book publisher Taschen to assemble a great, great collection in three languages.

A stellar collection of styles, nicely arranged by artist. I'll also recommend Collectors Books' ELVGREN for an in-depth look at the process of creating those timeless images, but for the buck, this is a honey!

Pin-Up Girls From Around The World is the best book I've bought all year. It's funny as hell and the art is so good, it's impossible to describe. The girls are super hot and there are enough hidden pop culture references to keep you busy every time you pick it up. My girlfriend and her friends really like it to because of the clothes, which is kind of strange but whatever. Really, you should check this out.
