A Good Gentle Start.......2006-06-27
This is a very sensitive book. The couple is gentle in their terminology and not likely to scare a person new to magick or energy exchange away.
Much of our culture looks at sex as carnal and bad no matter how loving or monogamous the relationship. This book gently introduces the reader to healing those feelings about sex in a positive way.
This book is going to disappoint any practiced magicians or tantrics but it is a very good book to introduce people to a new broader way of loving their partner and sharing in the sexual experiance together.

I am a devotee of Charles and Caroline; I have attended so many of their seminars that now, because I am a CTE I go to the weekend seminars for free. This book is their teaching, reading it for me is hard because I have heard them say the same things so many times. It is ancient wisdom. It is learning that is unchanging and essential for enlightenment on this path.

This book offers to teach Westerners something about Tantra. But there is a gross misonception in this book that needs to be clarified:
"Sexual energy is divided into three distinct types. First: the energy having to do with the reproduction of the race and the health of the physical body in general. Second: the energy having to do with the spheres of thought, feeling and will. Third: the energy that is found related with the Divine Spirit of man.
Indeed, sexual energy is without a doubt the most subtle and powerful energy normally produced and transported through the human organism. Everything that a human being is, including the three spheres of thought, feeling and will, is none other than the exact outcome of distinct modifications of sexual energy.
The control and storage of sexual energy is certainly difficult due to the tremendously subtle and powerful nature of this energy. In addition, its presence represents a source of immense power that can result in a true catastrophe if one does not know how to handle it.
Within the organism, there are certain canals through which this powerful energy must normally circulate. When this energy infiltrates the delicate mechanism of other functions, failure is the violent outcome. In this case, extremely delicate centers in the human organism are damaged, and in fact, the individual becomes an infrasexual.
All negative mental attitudes can lead directly or indirectly to these violent and destructive catastrophes of sexual energy. Hatred of sex, hatred of the Sexual Mysteries, disgust or repugnance towards sex, disdain for sex, an underestimation of sex, fear of sex, passional jealousy, sexual cynicism, sexual sadism, obscenity, pornography, sexual brutality, etc., turn the human being into an infrasexual.
When man and woman unite sexually in the Perfect Matrimony, they are truly ineffable Gods in those voluptuous moments. Man and woman united sexually form a divine androgynous being, a male-female Elohim, a terrifically divine Divinity. The two halves, separated since the dawn of life are united for one instant in order to create. This is ineffable... sublime... this is a thing of paradise...
Sexual energy is dangerously volatile and potentially explosive. During the secret act, during sexual ecstasy, the pair is surrounded by a tremendous, terrifically divine energy. In these moments of utmost joy and ardent kisses, which ignite the depths of the soul, we are able to retain that marvelous light to purify and totally transform ourselves. In short, those who continue to spill the sexual energy through the orgasm inevitably face disappointment, disiillusion, and they never enter into the real work of positive, White Tantra.
All White Tantra requires the absolute renunciation of the orgasm.

While it is true that we in the West have very disturbed notions about sex and sexuality, it should be kept in the mind that genuine Tantra harnesses the most powerful energies in the human organism: the creative forces. If you use these energies to create more lust, more attachment, more false security, then quite simply you are deepening your suffering. The sexual energy can enslave or it can redeem; but are you sure you know the difference? If there was a manual for our relationship, shouldnt it be one that takes love seriously & Tantra deeply, yet comes off lightly? I recommend this book to you as a guide on the new path-- sexual healing and an honest look at how We might work together. Sure it has a lil bit of "pyramid-hat wearing," but what's Tantra with out a lil' Shiva, Shakti and Chakra action? This book covers a very real method for developing stronger and more harmonious relationships, and I would say that's why this book excels more than the average tantric tome. Breathing together as a daily ritual; "no fault" communication; and a section on healing the sexual wounds of past relationships all make for a useful and informative easy read.
For Us, as we grow on new levels.

Pleasure equals happiness?.......2003-12-01
Honestly, has anyone acheived happiness through sensations? Granted, we experience some brief enjoyment, but inevitably, disappointment arrives... Those who seek happiness through sensations are always disappointed: that is why we have the symbol of the Satyr. The Satyr is focused on sensations but he is never content... Be sincere with yourself and realize the truth of this in your life: you can never find happiness through supposed "ecstasy" - you may find a brief moment of escape from the problems, but when it is over you are left with the same problems. This is not Tantra. Real Tantra provides the complete transformation of suffering. One cannot transform suffering so long as one has desire. Desire is the root of all suffering. We suffer because we do not have what we desire. When we get what we desire, we suffer because we are afraid of losing what we desire. There is no contentment. Contentment comes when the desire has been removed; then there is nothing missing, there is peace, joy, the true ecstasy of the Consciousness. I highly reccommend this book. It describes the background and philosophy of Tantra without losing the reader. It also provides a guide to Tantric practices, with pictures and instructions, which are easy to follow and positive. This book will show you how to achieve new heights of happiness and enligtenment with the help of a loving partner or alone, although most of the book is geared towards couples and how to work together. I think any couple that reads this book together will benefit their relationship and their individual psyches.

Another book on sex magic, well worth picking up. Frater U.D. avoids being pretentious and expresses the concepts behind sex magic in a clear and coherent manner.
I particularly liked the exercises he included, which he made very accessible. His use of references gives him another bonus in my book.
I also liked that he presented sections of sex magic for people who aren't heterosexual. It's strill relatively rare to see books that offer that for people who choose to live a different lifestyle. I only would've liked to have seen a more comprehensive section under kink.
A disappointment.......2005-12-18
the so called 'secrets' that are mentioned in this book have not been secrets for decades. the majority of the book is a history lesson about the OTO.
Tyson does a much better job on inner planes lovers and his techniques work but are very dangerous. see my review on Donald Tyson and Sexual Alchemy.
if you are truly interested in secrets of western sex magic, i would look further afield than this book.

Frater U.:D.: has provided a practical guide to sex magick, one that's been long overdue in occult literature. A brief overview is given of the history of Tantra and the `Inner Alchemy' of Taoism in comparison to western sex magick, dispelling common worries and fears regarding this much misunderstood branch of the western magickal tradition. He comments on the tendency of certain types of authors to `try to tackle a subject about which they know little only because it sells well', while noting that others often tend to exhibit `a vein of arrogance which looks down on the readers and believes that they are not yet "mature" enough for "real" knowledge'. I fully share his opinion that `secrecy has its place during learning and practicing, but not among authors who claim a desire to convey knowledge out of an inner commitment' (pg xi). Fortunately, this excellent text avoids these pitfalls.
Finally, a book on sex magick clearly written for both men and women, removing the patriarchal bias common to most texts of this genre. 'Secrets of Western Sex Magic' is aimed at consensual adults of any sexual preference or orientation, be they gay, straight, or bisexual. Even going so far as to state that `there is no such thing as total heterosexuality, as there is no such thing as total homosexuality' (pg 162); while in principle I agree, I am certain this will be a point of contention amongst many readers. He suggests that the practitioner aim for the more balanced androgyne, as he says: `Without making needless distinctions, traditional attachments and moral codes are set aside in favor of `Do what thou Wilt'. For the sex mystic, sexuality is a holy expression of one's highest destiny anyway' (pg xii).
Frater U.: D.: does an excellent job laying the ground work and getting, or informing the magician the `right' state or frame of mind, noting that `...it is not necessary to become a perfected, fear-free being to practice sex magic. It is only necessary to face up one's own fears and inhibitions with brutal frankness. If magic shall actually lead to freedom, than it must be transpersonal freedom, optimum in breadth of choice, and not some predefined norm which once more degrades humanity and wants to impose some new straightjacket' (pg 16).
U.: D.: refers to western magick as `applied mythology', referencing many ideas found within chaos magick, noting that `it does not matter which of the models you choose so long as it convinces you personally.' Recommending that one should `become familiar with as many models as possible, because each system has its limits and flexibility is needed for magic' (pg 83), instead taking magickal theories and ideas as `mythical truths' rather than restrictive objective absolutes. Though he cautions that one `should not overdo the individuality of our own correspondences. It is useful to follow traditional correspondences for metals, numbers, colors, gems an deities because they have a certain consistency.' While commenting on the power of `traditional' symbols, because `to use them is to tune into the traditional `current' of these magical symbols, making it easier to work with other magicians from a common basis' (pg 80).
Briefly, he discusses various OTO factions and the higher grades involving sex magick, and how they've chosen to represent them. While also combining numerous practical techniques, beginning with the more basic meditative and silencing of the mind, some pranayama, sigil magick, invocation as well as some physical discipline, and even a few aphrodisiac recipes are given - all without dumbing it down, while still remaining `down to Earth'.
As little background as possible is given when it would sidetrack from the original topic at hand, and in place he instead provides relevant and specific references for further information; which, while being both concise and useful, can also be a little frustrating at times. Then again there is only so much space one can dedicate, and as much as it does cover there is no substitute for experience, as he notes `in many respects it had to remain incomplete. It is my opinion that material, fleshy experience should always be preferred to purely mystical speculations. Only when this has been mastered will sex mysticism make any sense, and only then can the symbols become alive and images turn into reality' (pg 217).
Above all this book is practical, easy to read, astonishingly direct and honest in its approach and language, not to mention beautifully illustrated. Techniques and variances are explained in detail and are well-written. It's a shame more of his works have not been translated into English, especially those referenced throughout the book, numerous articles, essays, etc., which are, as far as I know, only available in German. Highly recommended.
German Occult Sex Magic.......2003-09-01
First off, nowhere does it state that this book is about the Tantra. This book is German Occult Sex Magic at its finest and most practical. It is about magic, about using your sexual energy, releasing it, and bringing about changes.
I grew up reading the likes of Cavendish, Waite, and others, and, personally, I like this book. It's breathing exercises are fantastic, it's sigil magic is great. It's inspiring and never sets on my bookshelf for very long.

I bought this since practical sigil magic was hard to find.
It has the extra specifics & extracurricular activities tied to german sex magic in kind of a handy guide.
I've used the techniques to gain results in doing magic and improving my life.
To those who see it as vile or "black, etc etc"....no duh. This ain't for you. This is not even for people interested in tantra. Sure, it glosses over the tantra subject, but tantra is only a means to an end here. Were here to do MAGIC. Look at your life and see just what kind of MAGIC you've created. Tough to accept, I know.
Anyways, it's a 4 star read since it worked for me. But most of the book's subject matter is extracurricular to the basic sex magic techniques available in practical sigil magic(or on the internet). I just wanted something in my possession.

There are a number of reviews here warning against this book, not for its actual content, but because of the idea of practicing Tantra. I will try to restrict this review to a critique of the actual book. I'll venture to say that I doubt this book was written with the intention of use by dabblers in Tantra without teachers. It is constructed in such a way as to offer reasonably authentic material, though without essential pieces taught by authentic teachers, which are generally the pieces that could get students into trouble, or more specifically, toward some kind of spiritual enlightenment. This is the nature of a secretive, initiatory system such as Tantra.
The primary problem with this work, in my opinion, is its transliteration. Sanskrit mantras are transliterated into Hindi pronunciation (for instance, hring instead of hrim), and genuine tantric practitioners will note that pronunciation is an important component of effective sadhana, at least at the intermediate and advanced levels.
I would recommend this book to those who are already familiar with Tantra, who wish to widen their perspective and have access to a number of useful materials, such as mantras (though, as warned above, they are not transliterated correctly, and those who do not speak and read Sanskrit may not catch this), yantras and useful (if not always correct, in its attempts to capture universality) interpretations, definitions and explications of imagery and practices. I would not recommend it for beginners, although it is useful in breaking the notion that Westerners often have, that Tantra is all about sex (which it most certainly is not!).
too complicated for those new in Tantra and magick.......2002-12-28
This is one of the best books I have seen on Tantra dealing with the Hindue pantheon. This is all too much for a beginner to take in at one time. I mean the auther puts a lot in it. The information is awesome but can be overwhelming for a beginner. I would only reccomend this to a beginner if the student would read it slowly and carefuller or else she/he will not get too much out of it. I love the color plates and you can use these for meditation and tantric purposes unless you feel you are crafty enough to make your own mandalas. He lists the 10 Mahavidya mandalas and in the end section he has instructions for Ganesha Puja. This is not your everyday book on Tantra nor is it filled with useless garbage. The man knows his stuff pretty well.

This book is a must for any serious student of tantra.The information contained is presented in an academic fashion without intimidating the reader.The author presents enough to make his points,complete his lesson,or just impart fact about Tantra without losing the meaning.Great stuff about prayers,yantras,cosmology,and a load more about Tantra.A fantastic book I highly recommend!

There is much about Tantra and Hinduism and it's nature that is valuable in this book. You need to know it and what this "thread" of Tantra is about.
For the web of life is created by many such threads.
Look for yourself on page 26 table 5 to understand the true nature of this Tantra: The Ten Karmas of Mantras!
Look and see for yourself what this path is about: This is a path of power, manipulation and desire.
Only the peaceful mantras of Shanti Karma do not bind you to the invisible "thread" of the dark side of Tantra.
As University graduate in Comparitive Religion and India studies, an ex-personal student of Mr. Johari in the 70s, and as a person who has lived and traveled in the Far East for the last 8 years studying Hinduism and Buddhism, take my advice and do not be led into any New Age dreams or fantasies about the real nature of this type of Tantra.
If you are attracted by the beautiful sensual art of this book and enter into the "Door" where they stand guard and beckon so seductively, know that in this house of Beauty and Music and art Philosophy and Laughter lives deep within the basement a terror of dark magic power far beyond your comprehension:
Dhumavati - She who stalks the burning ground, She who haunts the crematoriums. She who waits in dark places unkown and long forgotten to most living men to caputure unsuspecting souls.
She who is distorted and disbalanced. She who's Yantras and Mantras cause pain, suffering, death and despair. She who does not fear Shiva.
This is part of the Tantra that is contained in this book. Do not think it is myth or old wives tales. It is as real as the primal sounds and patterns that this book contains.
Tread this path as carefully as you would when walking a razor's edge. Do not think it is fantasy, it is indeed a dark reality few can fathom. If you, as a neophite tantrik, think you can cope with the dark forces unleased by the Uchchatan, Vidweshan and Maran Mantras that you may desire to invoke, you are totally deluding yourself.
Beware - amid the images that entice so gently and blissfully also live the the dark side of Tantra and power of Kali ma, Chinnamasta and Dhumavati. When you open this book and when you close it Circle yourself with the protection of the Maha mantra: Om Shanti - Sita Ram, Ram Ram, Hari Ram, Om Shanti Shanti Shanti. Read this book! And take care. For the reader who would enjoy a book which contains an overall treatment containing history of tantra, some tantric scripture and descriptions of tantric worship, this is quite possibly the best choice. I was delighted with the series of colorful ritual paintings loaded with hidden tantric meaning. The other blatantly erotic paintings did not detract but seemed to be simply a publisher's attempt to sell the book to a larger market. (The author asked the publisher not to include any erotic pictures.) These more erotic illustrations were perfect examples of works done by skilled painters and craftsman and could be enjoyed as such. The most fascinating aspect of this book is the manner in which tantra is not only compared with other religions and mythology, but how the author has shown that tantra has evolved from these sources. This book is written simply enough for the novice but also contains more specific information of interest to an advanced reader.
Great introduction to & history of tantra, beautiful artwork.......2002-07-09
The author of this book has written a fascinating study of tantric ideas and practices, focusing on their relation to gnosis, ie., mystical knowledge of god acquired via the winding left-hand path.
Apparently the author was upset when her book was published - it has been marred (gasp!) by the inclusion of dozens and dozens of beautiful, full color illustrations of hindu religious and erotic artwork.
I hope I'm not out of line in suggesting that, from the standpoint of the reader, the artwork is a GOOD THING. Actually, this is the best single source of information conmnection tantra with gnosticism I have have ever seen AND the best single collection of indian erotica I have ever seen.
TWO BOOKS IN ONE! YEAH!
Publishers should listen to authors........2002-02-04
This book is really two books.
The first, an eclectic (and hopefully reasonably academic) collection of thoughts and writings from around the world, more than that I cannot yet say, having recieved the book this morning.
The second, a collection of asian pornography, -some of which is 'tantric', little or none of which from classical Indian texts' gathered by the publisher to 'spice' up the text. The footnotes under most of the pictures look pretty much made up, seem to be unresearched or ill-researched, and bear little or no relevance to the copy.
Had I seen that the publisher decided to promote the subject heading as'Sexuality/Art', I would have not bought the book.
I will not buy books published by Destiny again.
For those of you who think that Tantra to do with sex, I recommend you look at the world around you, and ask yourself "What is? What is not?" Why? Because you are grasping at something that isn't there.
I sincerely hope that the copy is considered and provocative. If so, I shall revise my rating.

I have dabbled in meditation practice for over 10 years... a little bit of this and a little bit of that... and thought I knew what I was doing.
However, after reading this book I realized I didn't really fathom all the benefits of a full on meditation program. This book explains in very simple terms various techniques that can concentrate and focus on different areas in ones life. There have been noticable results since practicing the techniques described in this meditation manual.
The best part of this book is that it makes meditation exciting and adventerous ! That is what meditation is supposed to be - a fun journey of discovery - and here is your road map !
I gave my book to a dear friend that was stuck in a depressed rut and he has since bounced back and been rejuvinated after practicing just a few of the techniques described in the book.
Now I own another copy and this will book will continue to be the best gift I can give to my loved ones: the gift of meditation.

This book gives a beautiful introduction to meditation. It answers many basic questions on meditation with great clarity. It also introduces the reader to a variety of simple, fun and effective techniques - there is something for everyone here! A must read- highly recommended!
Great Book to enter into Meditation.......2007-07-06
This is an excellent book that reveals the science behind meditation. It is a must for anyone who wants to start or understand Meditation. This book gives facts about what meditation is and how one can move from just contemplating to actually doing (or being in) it. The book also has some simple techniques at the end which are very simple but make impact on our daily actions. Even for those who are from east some facts about meditation could be very revealing. I followed this book with Guaranteed Solutions (for Sex, Worry, Fear, Jealousy, Attention-need, Ego, Discontent) which takes you further deep into meditation and tells it all about the inner science created by great masters of the east.
A comprehensive introduction to meditation.......2007-07-06
I had been practising a number of meditation techniques for a number of years. This book really connected me to the true essence and the purpose of meditation. It had not occurred to me that there can be such simple and diverse meditation techniques. I've incorporated many meditation techniques into my daily routine and have thoroughly enjoyed them.

Just a warning to those of you who may be looking for an introduction into the actual practice of Tantra...
This book is part of the "World of Art" series. It is very academic in nature, and can be quite dry. I must say that it would probably be a great asset for someone studying art history or history of religion. It is just NOT by any means a "how-to" manual, or an easy read. As the previous reviewer stated, it does not concentrate on the sexual/spiritual aspects of tantra.
Rawson delivers beauty where other books on Tantra fail........1999-12-14
It seems the term "tantric" has become a codeword for "kinky" in the titles and content of too many how-to books available to the Western reader. Perhaps this is because they focus almost exclusively on the titillating sexual rites and positions suggested by Tantric practioners. By contrast, Rawson invites the reader to explore instead the subtle meanings, artistic values and philosophical underpinnings of the Tantric religion. Moreover, Rawson details the Tantric fascination with death and mortality and its implications for our understanding of God. This approach results in a more profound understanding of the beauty and richness of the art and practices of Tantra, and gives us the proper perspective on--and perhaps a key to accessing--the transcendent ecstasy sought by Tantric practioners.
I first read this book as an undergraduate, at a time when I was eager to throw off some of the Joycean "nets" of our western culture. Rawson showed me exactly where I should look for further inspiration. I have since found few books regarding Tantra that succeed so well in providing a balanced and complete view of Tantric culture, in such a succinct and finely illustrated volume. And do not misunderstand: this is not a dry, academic accounting of some cultural curiosity. On the contrary, Rawson communicates the vibrancy and vitality of the beliefs he describes. I found myself enthralled with this work, and Tantra in general, because Tantra places such a high--and exciting--value on passion, sexual ecstasy, and transcendent experiences. An understanding of Tantra might be an ideal balm for the disillusioned Westerner looking to find something more than those answers available in the judeo-christian canon. Whether that be the case or no, this volume is an perfect place to start for anyone interested in the art, practices, philosophy and beliefs of Tantra. And it is assuredly a better place to start than any book whose jacket promises some form of jump-start for your sex life--even if that is what you are seeking, after all.

Extremely Simplistic...boring.......2003-04-05
I am very disappointed in this book. The quality of the designs & line-art is child-level, the paper is not sturdy enough to paint on , almost all the designs were so simplistic as to have nothing to color; for example, many have just 2 blank sections sections only such as yin/yang.
IMHO, skip this book & get "Power Mandalas" instead--its pages are suitable for painting, framing, repeating without boredom & contain a wide variety of complex designs, meditation and color tips, etc.

Very concise explanation for "what is Tantra".......2000-12-28
It's really, really hard to put any religion into words that someone can understand and read in one evening. Philip Rawson succeeds in this task. Part of his success is the heavy use of pictures and illustrations, which makes the essence of Tantra easily understandable to the visual learner.
A fascinating survey of a fascinating subject.......1999-02-05
How does time function? What is ecstasy? What is illusion? How does the kundalini work? These questions and more are answered in the amazing work. In the first half, the author gives a clear and concise explanation of tantrik cosmology, explaining exactly how tantra perceives, men, women and indeed, perception itself. This is followed by a lengthy treatment of the tantrik path of spiritual illumination/transformation which dissolves the world of illusion; the second half of the book features page after page of beautiful tantrik painting & sculpture from India, Nepal and China. I cannot recommend this book too highly.
