Lovely Large-Format Book of John Sexton's Earlier Works.......2003-03-15
Quiet Light is a large format book (12x13 inches) containing 51 duotone plates of John Sexton's photographs taken 1974-1988. The title refers to the naturally "quiet light" of dawn and sunset which provided the illumination for the photographs within. The photographs are mostly of the natural world and range in perspective from close-ups of plants to sweeping landscapes. Some of the photographs are excellent, some mediocre, but the collection really conveys a specific mood and gives the viewer a strong sense of the style and themes of John Sexton's work during this period of time.
The quality of the paper is very good. It is difficult for me to comment on the quality of the reproductions because I haven't seen the original prints of any of them. In looking at the plates closely, it seems to me that some shadow detail has probably been lost. That always seems to be the case in fine arts photography books.
I particularly appreciate the technical information that Mr. Sexton thoughtfully provides toward the back of the book. The type of camera, lens, filters, film, exposure, and development information are given for every photograph. This will answer all of those "how did he get that shot" questions that every photographer, casual or pro, will inevitably ask himself/herself.
A worthy addition to any collection of nature photography or fine arts black-and-white books. A great introduction to John Sexton's work. A nice synopsis of his work from this period.... And a fine choice of adornment for your coffee table as well.
adding to the body of photographic images.......1999-11-09
what is unique about his work...beyond the technical expertise...is the newness of the work....most of the images avoid the cliches and thus fill a void in large format photograhpy...which has a tendency to become repetitive...many of the images are totally new to me, i think he did some work in finding unique material
Remarkable B&W photographs.......1997-03-05
John Sexton is a master--but you already knew that. His photographs show both a deep
technical understanding of the medium and an eye for visualization that I envy even more. Every time I open Quiet Light I want to rush out with my 4x5. That is; after I've turned the last page of this magnificent book. If you practice the Zone System, this volume is a must. If you do not, this book will make you want to. If you enjoy looking at photographs that make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end, this book is for you too.
Black and white photography at its best........1996-06-02
Quiet Light is a spectacular book of black and white
photographs. The images are superb and the reproduction
is extremely well done. "Quiet light" refers to the
very soft light found before sunrise and after sunset.
Such light requires long exposure and special technique.
Sexton masters this. The book is a "must" for anyone
who appreciates fine art black and white photography.

Wonderful!.......2006-02-26
Of all the Brian Andreas books, this is my favorite. I love the bright and colorful illustrations and the wonderful quotes. This book makes a terrific gift!
"If you hold onto the handle, she said.........2004-04-27
..it's easier to maintain the illusion of control. But it is more fun if you just let the wind carry you."
Like sayings of Pooh, Brian's elemental life-isms are poignant and insightful, and come from the soul of an eternal child. They are easy to carry around in your head and heart, and make my crazy life a little bit more bearable.
The book itself is also a delight to peruse, with vibrant renditions of his offbeat artwork and funky fonts. Even the cover binding and paper seems chosen with love and care, "Traveling Light" is a treat to touch and hold.
Just add warm blanket, a cup of tea, and someone to share reading it aloud to.
(I have only one of his prints so far!)
Touching short tales of life.......2004-03-14
Familiar with Brian Andreas' black and white drawings in his previous books, I was delighted to find this book in color. With three Andreas prints hanging in my home, I've found this artist and author succinctly illustrates stories from my inner life as if that life were as easily accessable as my outward appearance.
Andreas' knows how to tell a complete, touching and usually whimsically humorous tale in only a sentence or two. He captures the essence of situations in a few words, then illustrates the same situation with drawings equally economic and whimsical.

A Tender Story of Faith and Love From Janette Oke
Countless fans of Christian fiction like you were thrilled when Janette Oke released her new series, A PRAIRIE LEGACY. Readers have been rewarded with a touching exploration of the feelings and thoughts of young Virginia Simpson as she grows to be a woman. Now with A Quiet Strength, bestselling author Janette Oke continues Virginia's tale with a heartwarming, romantic novel that mothers and daughters everywhere will love.
Virginia Simpson has learned that grandma Marty was right to insist that when God allows something to be taken from you, he replaces it with something better. The return of Jonathan, their renewed courtship, and the upcoming wedding are all shining examples of that. Still though, the trials and disappointments of Virginia's life weigh heavily on her and the inner strength that has continued to build in her is far from completion.
The first test of her new resolve comes soon after her marriage. Waiting for their house to be completed, the couple has no choice but to live with Jonathan's grandmother. Although Virginia loves the woman, she struggles with having to share her new husband's time. When the house is completed, even greater obstacles arise, challenging both the couple's fledgling love as well as Virginia's inner peace. But like gold refined, Virginia will emerge as a woman of character and godliness.

Marriage, Grandmother, Horses and Mindy.......2004-02-10
Virginia is so anxious to be married to Jonathan that she does not fully count the cost. When reality hits her, she is angry and disallusioned. Her home is finally built and just as life looks promising, an old friend drops in and with her a little waif daughter who ends up being Virginia and Jonathan's. Raising horses is risky and not without long hours - again leaving Virginia to fret. With a baby on the way and an wounded child to heal, horses take priority and Virginia loses her perspective on what is really important. The last straw is when Grandmother breaks her leg and must come live with them. Virginia is ready to throw in the towel when she allows God to speak to her heart and she finally listens. She is able to sort between fact and fantasy, romance and committment and wakes to the real reason for being a family. She is changed forever. Another Janette Oke thriller. Off to book 4!
WOW!.......2000-02-25
I loved the first two books, but this one is the best yet! Virgina has now grown up. At first I was sad that her teen-years adventures were over, but reading about her as an adult has been thrilling. So many things, including an abused child, her own children, a husband, struggles, and her grandmother, happen to her. Through the whole thing she realizes that her relationship with Christ is not what it should be. I think that this book has a great value to it!
Wonderful!.......2000-02-24
Just like the previous reader, I couldn't put the book down! It was such a wonderful story I only wished that I had read the first two novels! I'm a first time reader to author Jannette Oke and I'm happy that found her! It was wonderfully written and very warming to the heart. I was glad to see Virginia's strength renewed during her toughest times. May God continue to bless Mrs. Oke.

Pleasing, exciting, inspiring, informative historical fiction.......2007-05-29
This Catholic historical novel, published in 1950, has proven a delightful surprise. Although a great reader of historical fiction of all types and vintages, I confess I ordered this book with trepidation, expecting that any sort of religious fiction, consciously marketed as such, might be too sentimental to suit my taste. On the contrary, The Quiet Light is a terrific example of most of the finest conventions in historical fiction: exciting, witty, often stylish, capable of piquing one's interest in the period and its leading figures. It's not at all interested in preaching to its reader, choosing instead to engage his or her attention in the conflicts of the period, whether physical, intellectual or spiritual.
De Wohl apparently wrote many novels about Catholic saints. I chose this one because of St. Thomas's special significance to me, as the patron of scholars. Like the best historical fiction, it not only excites and delights me in its trappings and makes me want to read more, but also led me to investigate the personages and events of the day, to see how well the fictional and historical have been woven. The novel remained at a high standard of quality throughout and was on occasion both moving and exciting. About the only things I can say against it is that it takes an unflinchingly anti-Muslim slant (perhaps not that unusual for a 1950 Catholic novel) and it falls prey occasionally to heavy handed dialogue--not stilted but heavy on exposition. But given the wide scope of the novel, De Wohl is actually pretty subtle at getting the historical essentials across as smoothly as possible.
The novel's somewhat peripheral treatment of St. Thomas is surprising at first, but then begins to make sense as his full story emerges. Thomas spends his days writing, teaching, thinking and praying, while Italy and his family are being torn to pieces around him. The main focus of the story is on political situations, then, (mainly the conflict between Emperor Fredrick II and Rome) which Thomas informs, inspires, and illuminates when the main characters seek him out, but which he only tangentially affects himself. That De Wohl is so capable at evoking this complicated political situation, that he can do so without resorting to tired genre clichés, is the really delightful thing about the novel.
Some brief mention of the people and places this novel manages to take on, within its 377 pages. Historical persons featured as characters include Thomas and Frederick of course, but also the following: Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus), one of Thomas's teachers; the Emperor's sons Manfred and Conrad, each of whom eventually become kings; Edward I; St. Louis of France; William of St. Amour, who writes a treatise against the mendicant orders which Thomas challenges; St. Bonaventure, claimed to be the heart of the Franciscans as Thomas is the heart of the Dominicans; John of Procida, a physician in Frederick II's service--at least I think he's historical; and Roger Bacon. Many other historical persons figure in the novel but aren't characters, including Popes Alexander IV, Urban IV, and Clement IV.
As for place, The Quiet Light roams around Italy quite a bit: Monte Cassino, the monastery; the University of Naples; Parma; Rocca Secca and other homes of the Aquino families. Paris also is visited, mainly Notre Dame and the Convent of St. Jacques. One scene of the crusades (mostly a backdrop for the novel) takes place at El Mohar, which I take to be in North Africa.
A really delightful surprise--probably would make a great gift too! I'm definitely ready for more De Wohl soon.
De Wohl: A Sustained Light of Genius..........2001-11-29
I could not have been older than 12 when I first read Louis De Wohl's THE QUIET LIGHT.
It was certainly not a children's book. Instead, it was the passed-along gift of an aunt --fittingly, a Daughter of Charity who in those days sported the intimidating wings that Sally Field would later demystify for me-- and one of the many books on a wide range of genres and topics she carried on long train rides from El Paso to St. Louis.
THE QUIET LIGHT also was, I believe, instrumental in sparking my earliest desire to write my own novels.
And that is surprising, because De Wohl's narrative, character development, and spellbinding prose made THE QUIET LIGHT much more than the fictionalized biography of Thomas Aquinas I had expected. It was nothing less than a staggering example of compelling storytelling which, by the sheer enormity of talent displayed, should have intimidated any aspiring/wanna-be writer.
Be advised: you will come away from THE QUIET LIGHT with more than the pleasure of having read a masterly crafted novel of the Middle Ages. Rather, you will find yourself informed and educated on everything from the Crusades to the philosopical infighting then being waged throughout both Europe and the Saracen worlds to the intrigues of the Italian nobility and their Germanic, decidedly unholy Holy Roman Emperor. You will marvel at how De Wohl weaves all this into a story that is filled with richly drawn characters, both historical and fictional.
By the end of THE QUIET LIGHT, you may even discover you have learned something about how to tell a story in a way that makes the reader mourn that he or she has reached the end of the book.
THE QUIET LIGHT is that good. So is Louis De Wohl.

Excellent book.......2000-07-10
An excellent book about the life and times of a great saint. It would be hard to estimate the spiritual fruit which this man's intellect has produced. The Catholic Church as well as intellectual life in general has benifited much from his life and writings. This is a well written book and hard to put down. I gave it four stars, however, because it is a novel more about the historical situation of the saint than the saint himself. Although the book did try and speculate about the some of the motivations of the saint, it failed to tackle his philosophy. Nevertheless, the book is sure to inspire further readings, especially into Thomas' own writings.
edifying.......2000-03-13
This edifying novel about the life of St. Thomas Aquinas actually focuses on the people who were all touched by his serene, cheerful, ascetic way of living. Carefully told through the eyes of the faithful knight-turned friar-turned knight again, his devoted sister, his protective mother, his arrogant brothers, and his fellow priests, the story reveals to us how a simple man brought spiritual strength and renewal to those around him, during a time of great political turmoil. The author does not tell the story through the lips of St. Thomas. At times, we may even feel cheated, thinking to ourselves that the story deviates too much from the simple life of the Dominican monk, to focus on the other characters. However, this ingenious manner of story-telling alludes fittingly to the way Thomas lived: quietly, doing the work of God, contemplating on mysteries only he shared with God, praying for those he loved, and discreetly staying away from all the attention he deserved.
Good, but driven more by context than St. Thomas Aquinas........1999-02-24
In a panoramic fashion, Louis De Wohl makes accessible certain 13th Century aspects and personalities. We discover kings and warriors, court intrigue and noble family feuds, mild brutality and saintly virtue, knights and monastic settings. There is even courtly romance, and an insightful portrayal of the birth of science. Saint Thomas Aquinas is situated very quietly around the edges of the dynamic action of the book. Perhaps too quietly. For the story tells far more about events that happened, or could have happened, than it does about the work and life of St. Thomas. In fairness, however, it manages to relay popular Thomas stories, and provides a sampling of that giant and saintly intellect. So I recomend this book to anyone interested in Saint Thomas, or 13th Century Europe. It is a suitable family book, and would interest readers of historical novels. The work accomplishes making one feel both the frantic upheavals of Medieval Europe, and the reassuring order of Faith and Reason, that St.Thomas did so much to discover and invigorate.

The story of a brave woman and romance.......1998-08-01
I have not found many romances appealing. But this book is different. It's not people doing a bunch of silly things and playing games to attract the opposite sex. It's honest to goodness love. It's about real life. This isn't a fairytale by any means. The language is magical and it will truly steal your heart. It almost made me cry. I recommend this to anyone who likes to read about true love and real life.

Book Description
A wonderful collection of poetry inspired by Vermeer's famous portraits.
Although the paintings of Jan Vermeer continue to be celebrated, very little is known about the painter himselfand still less about the women he painted. Who were they? What were their lives like? What thoughts, dreams, and desires might they yield up if we take the time to truly look at them?
In this elegant volume Marilyn Chandler McEntyre asks these very questions, and she teases out intriguing possibilities in twenty poems arranged side by side with color reproductions of the paintings that inspired them. McEntyre has chosen eighteen of Vermeer's famous womenincluding The Lacemaker, The Milkmaid, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and The Girl with a Red Hatto wonder about.
Rich with imagined detail, these poems each invite the reader to take a closer look at Vermeer's portraits, to celebrate not only Vermeer's artistry but also the significance of the women themselves. McEntyre thoughtfully imagines the personal lives of these women and attempts to capture what Vermeer himself saw in thema contemplative exercise that illuminates the presence of grace in the ordinary moments of life.
A wonderful blend of art and poetry, this volume offers a unique aesthetic experience for personal reflection.

A magical light caught by brush and pen............2001-11-17
DO read this book, and buy copies for gifts! The beauty of Vermeer's paintings as reproduced and explored here can cause a heartquake. This book is ALL beauty: light and shadow, personalities revealed, meditation illuminated.
Will you find 'your' favorite painting, or discover a new one? "In Quiet Light" draws the reader into a communion of like minds similar to that experienced in Quaker meeting. The author, Marilyn Chandler McEntyre, imagines lives lonelier than mine has been; yet there is suggested serenity and self-control, with a hint of subterfuge, in the women described by paints and words.
If I could share a book with a dozen friends, "In Quiet Light" would be my choice this year.
Wow!.......2001-01-04
This coupling of poetry with painting is as natural as putting words to music. The inner light of the subjects' humanity becomes as palpable as the soft light that fills Vermeer's paintings. Wonderful!

Book Description
Bennett, a popular reader and author of more than 30 successful books, here uses poetry to explore the deep ecological bonds between ourselves and the natural world.
Lyrical, at times mystical, Bennett's themes cover the human spectrum--from the mystery of life and death, to compassion for our enemies, to ruthlessness towards those we love.
Bennett dares to entertain lofty as well as ignoble themes, ones that have been around for as long as poetry, as long as human yearning, summoning us back to our own humanness.
