    Book Description

Above Las Vegas, aerial photographs by Robert Cameron and text by Jack Sheehan. The Luxor pyramid, next to the Excallibur kingdom, across the street from the New York New York and the MGM Grand theme park. There's no logic to how this hyperbolic architecture, all work together, but somehow it does. Then get out of town and revel in the rose and crimson of Red Rock Canyon, explore the white peaks of Mt Charleston, the Colorado River, and the Hoover Dam, or go east to the cathedral spires of Bryce Canyon and Zion. The wonders were formed over 50 million years, and yet the Strip is just 50 years old. Geologist fear not; mankind has bearly made a dent in any of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Lucky Vegas.......2005-05-18

This was Camerons last original photo essay and it is a nice creshendo. Vegas is not the most beautiful place Cameron has photographed, I mean in all fairness who can compete with Carmel, Yosemite, and San Francisco, but he makes Vegas sparkle with his fantastic eye. Vegas is a city that photographs well, the desert colors really respond to the camera, one can't help but be amazed at all the construction and I'm from Houston! As a man from the west, it was fiting that Vegas should be Cameron's last hurrah, I mean if this city does not symbolize todays Sunbelt I don't know what does. I may have not chosen this city to be his last, but that does not dampen my appreciation of his talent and the beauty of his photography. I highly recommend this book as I do all of his wonderful photo essays.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning, crystal-clear aerial tour.......2004-04-21

This review is really a review of all of Robert Cameron's books of aerial photography. He has many, including books of New York City, San Diego, L.A., Chicago, etc., and every one is packed with huge, colorful, full-page aerial photos. Cameron also knows a lot about the history of the cities he photographs, writing insightful captions, and many times including old aerial photos for side-by-side comparisons.

Cameron doesn't just shoot random shots - he focuses in on landmarks, buildings, neighborhoods, parks, events, etc. The shots are so clear that, if you've been to the city, you'll be able to pick out details you remember, like a park bench you sat on or a statue you admired.

As far as the Las Vegas book goes, well, this city changes so much that now, in 2004, some of the photos are a little out of date. For example, the Bellagio was not even dreamed up yet, and the New York New York is shown under construction. Still, the wide variety of shots, from the Strip and Downtown to the sprawling suburbs to the Hoover Dam, canyons and deserts from the California line to the Arizona line, make this book exceptional. You can spend quite some time just taking in the details on a single page.

5 out of 5 stars Best Photos Ever Of A Fantastic City.......2001-02-25

I've always been a fan of photography from the air and have taken many myself. Robert Cameron has shown the beautiful city of Las Vegas in a way that most other books on Vegas (and there's a lot)lack.

The photos are crystal clear and have captions that explain the photo. Probably the most intriging of the photos are the ones of the Hotel and Casinos. The Luxor, MGM Grand, and the Stratosphere are all excellently photoed.

A great soverniger for anybody wanting to go or have been to Vegas.

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Overview Of Mark Klett's Landscape Photography.......2002-03-30

It's a pity this elegant book is now out of print, since it traces the artistic evolution of Mark Klett, one of our foremost American landscape photographers. Combining his knowledge of geology with his interest in photography, Klett saw himself originally as a direct artistic descendant of great 19th Century American photographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O'Sullivan. Indeed, one of his earliest projects was to photograph again the same locales these photographers photographed during their work as official photographers to several U. S. government scientific surveys. Klett's work shows a deep affection and appreciation of the American landscape, especially the Southwest. Yet it is also a series of cautionary visual tales noting how we have inadvertently ruined that landscape through pollution and other signs of human activity. Hopefully this splendid book will be published again soon.

      Book Description

Two hundred color photographs by David Muench show rock paintings and petroglyphs in the arid regions of western North America, extending from Baja California north to Washington and from Wyoming west to California. Most of the locations are remote; many are secret. The photographs are organized into ten geographically-based styles: Great Basin and Mohave Desert, Green River, Colorado River, Little Colorado River, San Juan River, Gila River, Rio Grande, Columbia River, Chumash and Anza Borrego, and Baja California. Anthropologist Polly Schaafsma describes the cultural and physical context of each of these stylistic traditions, which range in age from six thousand years ago to the historic era.

        Book Description

"This is a shocking, powerful, moving, disturbing, ultimately hopeful book. We all stand in debt to Patsy Cravens for having the imagination, the determination, the skill, and the heart to capture this almost-forgotten portion of the past and preserve those fragile memories that could so easily have been lost. They are now, thanks to her, a permanent part of our state's history."

—from the introduction by John Boles, Professor of History at Rice University and editor of the Journal of Southern History

First settled by Stephen F. Austin's colonists in the early nineteenth century, Colorado County has deep roots in Texas history. Mainly rural and agrarian until late in the twentieth century, Colorado County was a cotton-growing region whose population was about evenly divided between blacks and whites. These life-long neighbors led separate and unequal lives, memories of which still linger today. To preserve those memories, Patsy Cravens began interviewing and photographing the older residents of Colorado County in the 1980s. In this book, she presents photographs and recollections of the last generation, black and white, who grew up in the era of Jim Crow segregation.

The folks in Colorado County have engrossing stories to tell. They recall grinding poverty and rollicking fun in the Great Depression, losing crops and livestock to floods, working for the WPA, romances gone wrong and love gone right, dirty dancing, church and faith, sharecropping, quilting, raising children, racism and bigotry, and even the horrific lynching of two African American teenagers in 1935. The Colorado County residents' stories reveal an amazing resiliency and generosity of spirit, despite the hardships that have filled most of their lives. They also capture a rural way of life that was once common across the South, but is now gone forever.

This is the latest of the books that I have read by Tony Hillerman. While writing entertaining fictional storys, his addition of real places makes them very believable. My next project is to visit these places using this book as my guide.

"...a skyscape of feathery cirrus clouds stretched southward toward Mexico. To the west over the Painted Desert, they were flushed with the afterglow of sunset" From `Dance Hall of the Dead"

At a book signing in Ft. Worth to benefit a homeless shelter, Tony Hillerman expressed how much fun it was to make this book with his brother Barney.

This book contains 200 spectacular pictures from all over Hillerman country. Many pages are picture only with the caption on the page prior or after. The text among the pictures is a combination of history and exerts from Hillerman novels. Now when you read the novels these pictures will come to mind.

Re3ading this book and looking at the pictures will make you homesick even if you have never been there.

        Book Description

With the exception of Yosemite, the magnificent landscape of the Southwest was the favoured subject of Ansel Adams, and he visited the region frequently throughout his life. It was there, in the early 1930s, that he decided to make photography his lifes work. Included are a selection of Adams iconic images of the Southwest as well as some less well known works ranging from the Rio Grande in Texas to Death Valley in California. His photographs of the Grand Canyon are a particular focus of the book. The pictures are complemented by an introduction by Andrea Stillman and a selection of Adams vivid letters about the region.

4 out of 5 stars ". . . the light that comes from the mind and the heart.".......2000-11-16

The 86 black and white images in this book reflect dozens of visits by Ansel Adams to the Southwest over more than 50 years. Adams liked what he saw, and felt that "this land is offering me a tremendous opportunity; no one has really photographed it."

This volume has two weakneses. The images are often too small to accurately reproduce the detail that Adams intended us to see in the foregrounds and backgrounds, and many are over inked. Second, the introduction by William A. Turnage is not up to his usual standards. He makes a number of strange assertions such as that Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941 (poorly reproduced in this volume) is "beyond doubt, his most famous photograph." Hmmm. What do you think? In other places though, Turnage adds interesting details about Adams' introduction to the Southwest and the influence on his photography of Paul Strand.

The book contains many letters from Adams about his experiences in taking the photographs, including many near disasters with his station wagon breaking down. One of the really interesting ones is to Patsy England in 1936 in which he says that in many ways the "Carlsbad Caverns are symbolic of my life; beautiful and exquisite things that exist only in the light of the moment." That may be the finest characterization of Adams' work that I have read.

Here are my favorite images (as reproduced here) in this book:

Saint Francis Church, Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, c. 1929

        Monument Valley, Arizona, 1937

Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona, 1942

White House Ruin, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona, 1941

Big Room, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, 1942

Burro Mesa and the Chisos Mountains, Big Bend National Park, Texas, 1942

Farm, Autumn, near Glendale, Utah, c. 1940

Tree Against Cliff, Zion National Park, Utah, 1947

In Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah, 1947

Manly Beacon, Death Valley National Park, California, c. 1952

Grand Canyon from Yavapai Point, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, 1942

Grand Canyon from Yavapai Point (Bright Angel Canyon), Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, 1942

After you have finished reading about Ansel Adams' adventures and learning in the Southwest, I urge you to take your own driving trip through this beautiful country. Be sure to visit the spots that Adams did. I also suggest that you be sure to add Sedona in Arizona, Mesa Verde, the Meteorite Crater in Arizona, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West in Scottsdale, and the Navajo reservation to the areas depicted here.

See the most beautiful places you can as often as possible! The beauty will seep into your soul.

        Book Description

Architectural photographer Richard Payne began this photographic survey of small Texas towns as a part-time enterprise—something enjoyable to do in his spare time out of nostalgia, curiosity, and a love of making photographs that reminded him of his hometown. The effort grew into a book that reflects today's Texas small towns and the practice of architecture as a profession and an art.

The brief period between 1880 and 1930 was the golden age of architecture in Texas. The downtowns of small towns were built then, and since about 1950 there has been a general decline, not only in the architecture and infrastructure, but also in the cultural and economic fabric of life in much of rural Texas.

Looking closely at the architecture of some two hundred towns throughout every region of the state, Payne closely documents in beautifully detailed images the current state of our architectural heritage. For him, the art of architecture stems from both the practical need of civic development and from the dedication, hopes, and dreams of architects, builders, and their customers. "Could we learn and apply the lessons small towns offer us?" he asks. "Could we not have, with all our wealth, energy, and talent, buildings, neighborhoods, and cities in which the 'spirit is cuddled, made serene, made at home with its fellow spirits, proud and happy?'"

Payne's answer, represented by the beauty of his photography and the passion of his writing, "is always yes."

"Texas Towns And The Art Of Architecture: A Photographer's Journey" by architectural photographer Richard Payne is a photographic survey of small Texas towns. Payne embarked on this project as a part-time activity -- something to do in his spare time out of nostalgia, curiosity, and taking pictures of places that reminded him of him own hometown. The 'golden age' of small town Texas architecture ran from 1880 to 1930 and reflected all of the early American architectural styles and influences including Greek, Roman, Italian, Egyptian revival, Spanish Colonial, Victorian, Art Deco, Moorish motifs, and a great many idiosyncratic oddities that defy classification. "Texas Towns And The Art Of Architecture" showcases architectural examples drawn from around two hundred towns throughout every region of Texas. Payne carefully documents his beautifully detailed images, many of which rise to the status of art as reflected through the lens of his camera. A unique addition to personal, professional, and academic library collections, "Texas Towns And The Art Of Architecture" is a very highly recommended reading for students of Photography, Architecture, and Texas History.

If you don't smile several times, feel nostalgic several times, and maybe even get a tear or two, while reading and studying the photos in this book, then you must be too young or just arrived from the former Soviet Union.

Page after page in this book called out to me, "You've got to go there," or "Haven't you been there?" Since the book is a compilation of work over a number of years, many of the subjects in these photos are gone. Many more will be gone. Small towns in Texas, and the Southwest in general, are being transformed.

Buy this book. Read it. Go to the places photographed in it while you still can.

5 out of 5 stars SHORT AND SWEET.......2007-08-21

I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT ! I WANT TO GIVE A COPY TO ALL MY FRIENDS.

NO, DON IMUS, IT IS NOT OVERPRICED. IT IS SO REFRESHING TO SEE SOME-

THING UNIQUE INSTEAD OF THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD.

1 out of 5 stars Two Guys, a Big Mouth, and Going too Far...........2007-04-13

I never cared for Don Imus. His views and radio talk were all based on insulting other people, no matter who they were. So this book is as hollow as the man who wrote it. Today, with Don Imus having been fired from radio, after saying one bad thing too many, I can at last say that the whole country have at last seen the man for what he was and said "Enough, Be Gone Now."

1 out of 5 stars A book version of Beauty and the Beasts...........2003-11-05

Having been one of those fat tourists who's enjoyed both Arizona and New Mexico;I was taken by the photos as soon as I opened the book. They are good and brought back many memories. As to the two guys;I'd never heard of them, maybe they've just been out in the sun too long. It's like when the cow kicked over the pail of milk,it sort of spoiled everything.I guess that was why the warehouse was dumping copies of the book for $2.00 .The drawings scattered throughout were good.I would like to make one suggestion,if I may.If the book is ever reprinted;maybe it could be done in Sanskrit ,that way it wouldn't detract so much from the photos.

2 out of 5 stars Great Photography, But..............2001-03-22

As promised, this book has wonderful photography. It really shows off a lot of the beauty we have in this country. However, the language used throughout the book is disgusting. I have not decided whether I will cross out the words with a black marker or discard the book. I certainly would not want a visitor to pick up the book in my home and think I could possibly condone such language. I'm assuming this is the reason the book was offered at such a fantastic price.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, infantile text........2000-12-13

Let me start out by saying I am an Imus fan and have been listening to his program since the 70's. That being said this book was a mild disappointment. The beautiful pictures of the American Southwest are definitely worth the price of admission. But the comments often get in the way. How many times does the phrase "fat tourists" need to be said in order to make a point?(At least three in this book along with other derogatory mentions.)The text seems to be an afterthought and probably could have been omitted all together. But the picture on page 12 alone makes the rest of it worthwhile.
