Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Magic Eye Mania.......2007-01-12
This book is packed with more images than any other I own, and more vivid colors. I have a lot of favorite pictures, and I love that there are varying degrees of difficulty and depth so theres something for everyone in this book. My only regret is that I cant frame a couple of them as abstract art on my walls. If your looking for an all inclusive book of Magic Eye visual art, this is definately my top choice and top recommendation.
Some good images here, but some duds, too........2006-12-25
(3.5 stars) I've always been a huge fan of Magic Eye images, and I wanted to find a large collection that might keep several grandchildren busy and having fun during the winter holidays. This collection of 3D images, however, proved to be something of a disappointment. Though there are several hidden pictures that are clear and very professionally done (an image of football players and one of an eagle hunting, for example), about twenty-five percent of the images are either unclear, ill-defined, or uninteresting as subject matter.
Two "glass" images are simply the 3D version of the flat image. Five pages contain "no image" at all. Two mazes appear, but only one can be solved--the other has two dead ends at the beginning. Other questionable images include two jet planes with a target site superimposed, making the picture appear confused, a chariot race in which the chariot is unclear and the driver looks like a triangle; and Saturn with its rings where the bottom half of the planet is so hard to see, that the image look like a ranger's hat. Some images of little interest include those of yin and yang, a tapestry weave, an ugly cone, a cube, a car driven by a wolf, a ball seen through mesh, op art, symbols for male and female, four puzzle pieces, and penguins (not polar bears) in front of an igloo (?!?).
I really enjoy this series, but this selection was not interesting to my audience, who felt that many images were just too much work for an image of little interest. In total, I found fifty-seven of the eighty-eight images to be acceptable to good, and two are excellent. Thirty-one, which I marked in the corner so people could skip them, were inferior and detracted from what could have been a terrific collection. n Mary Whipple

Magic Eye Gallery: A Showing Of 88 Images
by N.E. Thing Enterprises
I am pleasantly surprised that this treasury of eighty-eight colourful random-dot stereograms is still around. The publisher is apparently the leading pioneer in this field. I thought the 'craze' had faded towards the end of the nineties.
Personally, I am also fascinated by random-dot stereograms. My first exposure to them happened when I attended the PhotoReading workshop in 1992 & then reading Andrew Kinsman's wonderful book, 'Random Dot Stereograms', about the same time. Besides books, I have also amassed a large collection of posters & post-cards in the same genre.
My personal stance towards random-dot stereograms is that they help to demonstrate the two specific phenomena of human perception i.e. binocular disparity & stereoscopic vision.
Although they are great fun to play with, I find them very educational in understanding - & appreciating - how the brain really works! In actuality, each of your two eye balls take in sensory data independently from each other. To see a random dot stereogram, your two eye balls must work together as a coordinated team to sustain a soft focus (or unfocused gaze). In other words, it takes two eye balls to tango!
For some people, random dot stereograms may be difficult to see (especially during the first attempt) when compared to conventional visual illusions found in 'Can You Believe Your Eyes' & 'Seeing Double' by J Richard Block respectively.
I often notice that many people can see the colourful random dot stereograms more readily than the black & white ones!
For your further visual entertainment, I would like to suggest the following collections, also published by N E Thing Enterprises:
- Magic Eye: A New Way of Looking at the World;
- Magic Eye Vol 2;
- Magic Eye Vol 3;
- Magic Eye: A New Bag of Tricks;
To conclude this review, I can only say that when you can readily see random dot stereograms, irrespective whether they are in colour or black & white, you will be able to understand & appreciate the power of 'splatter vision' practised by secret service agents, army snipers, fighter pilots, martial artists, fast readers, animal hunters & nature observers.
AMAZING.......2005-01-15
This book it TOTTALLY amazing. it has a hidden 3-d image inside a 3-d backaround. I do not even no how they do it without 3-d glasses. It is so easy to use to when you get used to it. later on you will just start starring into random pictures. You may think that is stupid but even though it sounds boring it, you will be sitting down starring at one picture for so long. You will love the stunning 3-d effects. I started getting into this by buying a 3-d spongebob book. It didn't include 3-d glasses so I borroed them. Then I tyhought myswell have some fun wlile I have the 3-d glasses so I searched the internet for pictures that need 3-d glasses. I found so much. Then I learned the cross eyed one. I get that one. Then i learned the parrelell trick. That was o.k. Then I found a wierd site in my search results. It said "magic eye". I looked at it. Then the next day I hatdto give the glasses back. I was sad. I looked at that site again [...] I noticed it did not need 3-d glasses and there was only one image of it instead of 2. I looked into it. I did not believe it at first. I thought it was fake. To see if i was right I printed one out. I looked at the directions. I got fustratted because I couldn't see it(it was saturn). right befor I was about to put it down I saw a big 3-d circle made of stars. Then a ring sorrounded it. I was amazed
Nice images, but book is falling apart.......2005-01-04
The images in the book are cool and there are a lot of them, but sadly the book cannot take much handling-my copy of M.E.G. has about 3 pages that have detattached. I have other 3-d image books and they are hard cover with durable binding, which is very necessary since the book gets a lot of handling when people are trying to see the images especially for the 2 page spreads.

Wow!.......2007-08-27
Guys this book is really something nice to get your hands on .... Will cunningham has done a very nice job, explaining the complexities of the software in a very jolly and entertaining manner..
thank you Will
A Classic.......2007-03-30
If there is such a thing as a classic software instruction book, this is it. In my efforts to learn Houdini I have watched the Gnomon DVDs, done all the tutorials that come with the software, and taken a class at Gnomon. Then I got this book. Of all these resources, this book has been the most fun (not that the class and the DVDs aren't great too). I wish I had started with this book. The book is extremely well-written and fun to read. If you are starting out with Houdini, start with this book first. It will give you a solid grasp the basics of Houdini plus a lot more and you'll enjoy reading it!
good tutorials!.......2006-11-11
I am working out of this book right now and am enjoying it. The projects are fun, and the author manages to explain Houdini clearly without being dry. So far, I have been able to complete the lessons with the Houdini Apprentice Versions (a free downloadable version of the package). However, I don't think this book is for beginners to 3D CGI because a lot of information is tossed at the reader. Sometimes I felt that I was taking a drink from a firehose! A little knowledge of Unix and scripting will help the reader understand expressions. Overall, the book is good value for your money.
An excellent resource for Neophyte Experts like me.......2006-04-16
Houdini is vast, but easily knowable. I know a chunk of Houdini's capacity, having used it and its predecessor, PRISMS professionally for fifteen years or so. The richness of Houdini always allows for one's eyes to be freshly opened to its potential, however. (Jebus, I *wish* my dog would stop farting! - Man, that's foul!) Sorry... What was I saying? Oh yeah... I left my copy of the book at work, and now I'm trying to find some of its content here at Amazon, so I thought I'd take a moment to say that *this* old FX god finds Will Cunningham's book, "The Magic of Houdini" to be accessibly written, chock full of useful stuff, and right now, inconveniently indespensible. [UPDATE] I went to work just to get the book, and it told me what I needed to know, and now I can model that metacarpal like nobody's business! Yay Will!
Best book on Houdini ever.......2006-03-22
Well, the only book on Houdini, but coincidently, this book is an excellent resource for all levels interested in Houdini. Information is clear and the examples are well constructed and useful. It does really scratch the surface of the program, but Houdini would be impossible to teach in one volume.
You should also buy this book if you are interested in Derivative's Touch Designer, since many of the concepts apply.
Hopefully the sales of this book will encourage other authors and publishers that there is a market for Houdini materials

PHOTO_MAN.......2007-09-19
This is an excellant guide for either an owner or prospective owner of the PENTAX K10D dslr camera. It goes into detail about each feature of the camera, and doesn`t hesitate to make his approval or disapproxal of a feature. Anyone that owns a PENTAX K10D should have this book as a reference guide--This is a MUST.--BILL RHYNE
Comprehensive guide.......2007-09-05
This compact and comprehensive guide is great to keep in your camera-bag. It covers everything that the manual does but in greater detail and with examples of photographs taken using the techniques described. If you are a new K10D user, whether you are experienced with SLRs or have only ever used P&S before, you will find it invaluable - flip through a few pages whenever you have a spare moment and you will discover some new possibility on the feature-rich K10D.
simple, straightforward.......2007-08-14
Burian, does a great job of taking the mystery out of adjustible, digital slr cameras. A logical, progressive, step-by-step approach, leading to a non-intimidating familiarity, with a highly sophisticated device. This is surely the best manual-assist books I have ever read in my 37 year passion with photography. Well done! I wish you would write one about the operating manual for the software as well.
All you need to know to create K10D magic - crisp, clear & concise.......2007-07-26
Mr Burian - who also wrote the Sony Alpha manual in this series - truly is a hands-on professional who obviously has used the camera extensively. He shares his knowledge and experience in crisp clear language and doesn't hesitate to offer advice on important settings. Properly, he devotes more than adequate time to RAW (digital negative) photography. After more than half a year of camera ownership, I still learned a great deal - some of it quite revealing.
To keep costs down, illustrations are black & white; some quite stunning and nearly everyone making a photographic point. Some line art would have been helpful - the photo of the 4-way navigation control (p. 40) barely reveals the all-important directional arrows, and stating that 'the menu has four tabs' hardly takes the place of a line drawing as shown in the Operating Manual. Not to worry though, as the balance of the figures is sharp, detailed and very much to the point.
Complete newcomers may wish to pick up the point-and-shoot basics from the unusually well-done Pentax K10D User Manual before moving up to this book. Moreover, the author assumes you have the latest automatic lenses - ignoring the fact that many users retain Pentax loyalty because of consistent backward lens compatibility. My old manual f4 80-200mm zoom is sharp as a tack, but learning how to properly meter exposure using the manual aperture ring would be appreciated by many readers (hint: use the 'green button').
These minor detractions aside, the sections on exposure adjustment and flash photography alone are worth the very modest price. Well Done!
No color photos..........2007-07-20
This book is pretty good.. I just find it ironic that a book about digital photography even while discussing topics related to color such as white balance etc, the book offers no color photos to emphasize its points, all the photos are B&W. Seems like an odd choice by the publisher given the current technology for color printing of books...

Great with details.......2005-11-04
The details on doing the projects are good and most measurements are stated in imperial and metric which is useful. Both the computer steps and hands on steps are understandable. I really like the humor with the teddy bear shirt and the Andy Warhol style shirt is going to be given alot this Christmas.

Leon Zeisel is in big trouble. He is perpetually exhausted due to an overactive icemaker in the hotel where he lives, he discovers in his mother's desk a confidential envelope from his school announcing that he displays "a troubling lack of fine motor skills," and worst of all, he begins fourth grade under the tyrannical tutelage of Miss Hagmeyer, a black-cloaked, black-wigged, mushroom-eared woman who is obsessed with sewing, a fine motor skill if there ever was one. Insisting that all instruction should stem from the Middle Ages and "The Heavenly Stitches of Virtue," the Hag forces her students to sew an "animile" per month, a stuffed animal of sorts that is not to exceed four s.p.i. (stitches per inch) in the inseam. What happens when Leon decides to sew his end-of-year "Master Piece," the "spitting image" of Miss Hagmeyer, an exact miniature replica down to her liver-colored panty hose? Allen Kurzweil creates a magical, eccentric world where, as in many of the most satisfying children's books, adults are benevolent but flawed--and kids are in delicious control of them. Fans of Daniel Pinkwater's novels will feel right at home with this clever and suspenseful underdog-turns-champion story with a dribble of magic. (Ages 8 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
This book is about a hotel full of animals. And an evil ice maker. And glass eyeballs -- oh, and really old panty hose and Possibly Fake Hair. But mostly, it's about Leon Zeisel and his epic quest to survive fourth grade, despite his teacher, Miss Hagmeyer, and his archenemy, Lumpkin the Pumpkin, a human tank with a deadly dodgeball throw. Luckily, Leon has friends who will stand by him even if his magical plans for rescue and revenge involve ... SPIT!

Nothing Special.......2007-07-13
I can't understand why anyone would give this book a high rating. It wasn't anything special. The writing was very average, the story not very interesting. I guess after reading better books, I have high expectations.
exellent.......2006-10-03
If you like mysteries, spookiness, and maybe even sewing. I recomend this book, because it is funny and full of adventure.Allen Kurzwell put a lot of detail into this book,I didn't dislike anything in this great book.
A Deliciously Quirky Book for Kids!.......2006-09-08
Fourth grader Leon lives with his mother in their eccentric apartment house in New York City. Leon is nervous about going into the fourth grade, and is horrified to find out his teacher is the dreaded Mrs.Hagmire. She is well known for her obsession with sewing which is especially bad for Leon because of his poor fine motor skills. She forces her students to create "animles" (in other words models of animals) sewn from her old panty hose. A bizarre accident involving a jar of spit gives Leon's animle strange powers. This is a fast paced funny book that will appeal to those who enjoy humorous fantasy.
Excitement, magic, and mystery.......2006-02-25
I think that Leon and the Spitting Image is a great book that a lot of readers would love to read. It's about Leon Ziezel and his two friends, Lilly-Matise and P.W., and how they try to survive fourth grade and avoid being caught by Miss Hagmeyer (or "The Hag") their teacher who is obsessed with sewing and medieval things, and Henry Lumkin (or "Hank the Tank") the school bully. But with a little bit of spit, everything could change. I recommend this book for anyone who likes excitement, magic, and mystery kind of things.

A great read for after Harry Potter.......2005-07-29
Leon lives in a world that is far from normal. He resides in a hotel that is regularly inhabited by the strangest of pets and is tortured each night by the Ice Queen, an ice machine with definite personality disorders, determined it seems, to prevent sleep. But Leon's life is about to get even odder - he's entering the 4th grade at a school known for its unorthodox teaching methods.
Enter Miss Hagmeyer, a teacher with ears like a bat, who changes the eyeballs on her cloak to suit the day's lessons and whose hair is rumoured to be a wig held on by Velcro. She's obsessed with sewing and the Middle Ages, and any student wishing to pass 4th grade must master the "Heavenly Stitches of Virtue" and create seven animiles (stuffed animals) to her exacting standards. How Leon navigates the year and comes into his own will delight readers of all ages.
Allen Kurzweil has created a world of magical realism but has kept his hero, and friends, as truly ordinary children facing realities of life to which his readers can relate. Leon lives with his single Mom who works long hours, faces torment by a bully at school and struggles with lessons. The chaotic world around him infuses Leon's story with enchantment and captures the imagination quickly, making this a heart-warming as well as delightful tale.

Book Description
Phoebe Halliwell is stunned when her latest vision involves her younger half sister, Paige. The vision reveals to her that Paige is actually an imposter who will infiltrate the Power of Three and break it apart. However, Piper is dismissive when she learns of Phoebe's concerns -- so much so that Cole and Leo end up taking sides as well. Before long, all involved are on edge.
Paige senses that her sisters are acting strangely around her, so when she meets Timothy McBride, an attractive young stranger who purports to be a witch, she decides not to tell them. She wants to have something of her own, separate from her Charmed duties. Secrets are estranging the sisters from one another, and the timing isn't good. Women are turning up all over the city, dead by supernatural causes. The perpetrator may be connected to the sisters' past -- but if they can't work together, they might not be able to stop him.

ugh.........2007-02-10
I thought that this book was okay but it could have been better.. I didnt like how it told the victims point of view and also Darryl's. I love the guy but i didnt really care about how his board meetings were going. The book bored me pretty badly and it made me want to go and do something eles. Usually I can read a Charmed book in about a day or less but it took me about 3 days to read this one. I dont suggest it but if you collect the series, buy it as cheap as you can so you dont waste your money.
mystery.......2004-06-04
i thought this book was a real page turner and you end up not sure which sister to trust, i wont give to much away, plus there's quiet a bit of mystery in this book but it all comes together well during the ending overall a good read
Mirror Image.......2004-02-01
I personally think this book was an amazing novel. It keeps you turning the pages without stoping for a brake. Once you start reading this book, it's hard for you to put it down. At first, the book keeps you intrested with a mysterious begining, later on it begins with a more insightful start. This book keeps your heart racing with unexpected surprises.
mirror image.......2003-11-03
I thought this was a good book as you are not sure which sistersý side to take when it all turns ugly. Although there are twists and turns in the tail they are quite easy to follow so youýre not left thinking, what was that all about? My one fault if I had to find one with this book would be that they reveal the bad guy to quickly they could of maybe left you guessing a little longer. But overall I would defiantly recommend this book to anyone not only charmed fans.
Yet another great Charmed book.......2003-09-04
This book kept me in the dark but I did have a feeling about who the bad guy was.I think they shouldn't make it obvious on who the "Bad guy" is...they should make it where we think that person is bad but really is good and vise versa with the good guy. It's kid of too preidctable. But I still love Charmed! I just have one question...why are Phoebe and Cole still together? When are they going to make a book where they are not together anymore? I guess the book series is different than the t.v series because in the t.v series when Paige's hair is blonde, Phoebe wants nothing to do with Cole but in the book "Between Worlds" they are still together...well sorry I got a little carried away...back to "Mirror Image" I thought this book was great and I can't wait until I read the "Between Worlds" book. So far I've read all the Charmed book and I have not missed a single one. Some of the books were kind of [not good] like "Spirit of the Wolf," & "Date with Death," I didn't really get those books....But I still think that Charmed rules and it beats out all the WB shows! Nothing and I mean nothing can beat out Charmed. It's still number one on my list of "favorites" and it will always be number 1!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Primer for Inkjet Printing.......2006-06-03
For most of us the ultimate goal of making a great digital photo (or a film photo for that matter) is to make a great print. As luck would have it, however, print making can be both the simplest and the most exasperating aspect of the digital process. Issues like color managent and equipment profiling are not concepts that come naturally to most of us. But Derek Doeffinger has done a fine job of putting all of this into simple, clear language.
Sure, pressing a button to get a quick color print is as simple as it sounds, but when it comes to getting a great print, it takes quite a bit of practice and some good basic knowledge. This book is the best primer that I've seen on the subject (and I'm surprised there aren't more good books on this topic). The book covers every aspect of printing including: setting up a good workspace, choosing the right printer, understanding technical issues like resolution, tone/color adjustments and calibrating your monitor, etc. In fact, it's hard to think of an aspect of digital/inkjet printing that Doeffinger doesn't cover.
Incidentally (or perhaps not so incidentally) the book is superbly written and nicely designed--a very fun and informative read. Most important though, there is nothing about this book that will scare you off if you're just getting your first serious inkjet printer and if you're an experienced printer, you'll still find lots of useful information. When you consider that the book costs about the same (or less) than a good ink cartridge or a pack of paper, it's a very good investment.
