Book Description

" Criticizing Photographs: An Introduction to Understanding Images is now in its third edition and it has become the standard in photo criticism and theory courses throughout the United States. The book contains an elegant pedagogical apparatus founded on the four critical activities that Terry Barrett so ably illuminates -- describing, interpreting, evaluating, and theorizing.

Moreover, Barrett's analytical categorization of photographs into ideal types including the aesthetically evaluative and the interpretive (to cite two examples) has provided readers with a highly original and useful way to think about how photographs are made to function in the world." Louis Kaplan, Southern Illinois University

2 out of 5 stars Goes on and on.......2006-04-30

Includes miles of intellectual blather. Fits well into sexually charged point of view of photography. Uses most horrific and grotesk as examples. On page 33 in third edition author mentions head decapitation as one photographer's "external" influences. Uses sexual pictures as examples. Generally a politically correct lightly negative type discourse on photography. I feel sorry for the students subjected to this pulp.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction........2004-10-15

Having never taken a course in art appreciation, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to interpreting photographic images. The comment above about this book serving as a framework is a good one. Essentially any photograph will fall into one of the categories, giving the viewer a frame of reference within which to interpret and appreciate the meaning of the work. It forces you to slow down and think about each photograph you encounter, ultimately enriching the viewing experience. I highly recommend it for photography aficionados and photographers alike.

2 out of 5 stars Criticisng Criticism.......2002-06-11

A look at the subtitle to this book, "An Introduction to Understanding Images", might lead one to believe that it is about photographs and what makes them good or bad (or if there are such things as "good" and "bad" photographs). But instead it is about photographic criticism, primarily written. And even then it really doesn't tell you very much about how to write criticism yourself, or how to interpret what you read, or how to develop patterns of thought that would enable you to criticize in a useful fashion. Instead most of the book is concerned with the pigeon holes into which different kinds of photographic criticism can be put.

An unstated thesis of this book seems to be that the criticism of photographs is an art form itself. Certainly anyone who has read something like Walter Benjamin's "the Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" might agree. But if it is an art, then it has both form and content, and any book claiming to teach one about the art (I almost said craft) had better address those points. To know that there are theoretical schools like Postmodernism or Feminist Theory is useful to those trying to organize photographic criticism and may be helpful to the photographic critic who is trying to decide what his own approach is, but knowing that these schools exist does not help a critic as much as a knowledge of how to look at a picture and organize a written commentary.

Fortunately, the book has a number of examples of written criticism, including several examples of different critics addressing the same picture. Unfortunately most of the criticism addresses the content of the photograph without considering how the form relates to the content or how, as Mark Schorer has said, technique leads to discovery. For example, Ansel Adams' photographs rely upon the range of light from the whitest whites to the blackest blacks to make their statements about the grandeur of the American wilderness. Unfortunately, nothing in this book considers photographic technique for the critic, although there are plenty of opportunities. For example, there is an ambiguous picture by Robert Doisneau taken in a Paris Café showing a younger women and an older man. The picture is grainy and the depth of field shows the women more sharply then the man. Both of these techniques should contribute to the possible interpretation of this photograph, and yet they are not mentioned.

I think the photo critic who wants to improve his art would be far better served by learning something about photography, and then reading actual criticism, like John Szarkowski's "Looking at Photographs". "Criticizing Photographs" should only be considered as a supplement to such studies.

5 out of 5 stars useful and excellent book for students of photography.......2000-12-26

I have read Persian (Farsi) translation of the 2nd. edition of this book. Thanks to Mr. Barrett and the translators of the book. It helped me to understand how to criticize photographs and I found it a unique book in this field. After searching in Internet I found out that Mr. Barrett Has revised the book in ashort periodof time. I suggest, as a student of photography in university, to all studentd in the world to read the book. Again thanks to Mr. Barrett.

5 out of 5 stars "It takes more time to make a picture than to appreciate it".......2000-11-21

This is an excellent book.

These are some questions the book deals about: How a photograph is made? What are its purposes? How should its context be considered? Was that photograph made or taken?

In this book several criteria (even opposite ones) about photographs are also analyzed and compared, leaving to the reader the decision about the one(s) to take. The process of understanding a photograph is not simple, but this book is a nice guide to follow.

At the end of the book, examples of reviews are included, as a reference not only for students, but also for the person who simply would want to talk about a photograph. Moreover, advice concerning the redaction is also given.

4 out of 5 stars Ingnore the title, this books a winner!.......2007-01-10

I purchased this book for my wife when I got her a digital camera for Christmas. It was well worth the money. The book explains photography as well as post processing which is a critical part of digital photography today.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work.......2006-10-16

Matt Bamberg's book Digital Art Photography for Dummies is an excellent resource for both the beginner and the advanced student of Digital Photography. I have read the book and of especial interest to me were the numerous overt and subtle suggestions about technique and execution. Suggestions which I have used to great effect to dramatically improve my own compositions and to better concentrate and focus my shots.

In addition I really benefited from the suggestions regarding how to process and enhance your work, post shooting. One of the more important foci of the book regards how to transform your work from more simple photographic imagery into more complex renditions which can be considered artistic. Matt explains these techniques for image modification easily and logically and it was not difficult with the right equipment and software for me to begin experimenting with altering my works to produce far more spectacular work. Work which others have expressed interest in. I have even become my church photographer and have recently had other people ask me to undertake photographic assignments on their behalf. In addition I have started the process of taking previous shots and altering them for inclusion into my written works, as graphic enhancements to my writings.

However the book also contains a myriad of techniques which are useful and helpful for the amateur and for the individual who uses photography as a part of their other work. I am often involved in investigations and through some experimentation and adaptation I have used techniques suggested and explained by Matt in order to clarify, focus, and render my investigative photographs far sharper, clearer, and more relevant for my clients. So the book has indirectly benefited me professionally as well.

I have enjoyed Matt's book, have visited his blog and site, and found him to be an accessible and helpful author. Additionally he obviously knows his subject matter and is therefore professionally well-qualified. He seems very experienced and yet eagerly experimental, two traits I like in any individual who is trying to teach me something new.

I have Matt's book and consider it a valuable addition to my personal library on the subjects of both art and photography.

I recommend the book.

Jack.

This is a great book for anyone using digital photography -- whether
you are just starting out or have some experience. There is something
for everyone! I found it to be a great source of information when it comes
to Photoshop. Of all my Photoshop books, I find I reach for this one the
most. It is permanently planted by my computer for quick reference when
I need it. It has GREAT editing tips and is easy to read and comprehend.

5 out of 5 stars Going digital...making art...this book shows you how!.......2006-03-10

I know Matt Bamberg's writing and love his blog (digitalartphotographyfordummies.com). If you're new to photography and confused by all the terms, Matt takes you through the basics (although he says the book assumes you know the principles of photography, he patiently explains the technical stuff). If you're a seasoned pro, skip the refresher course and just enjoy the fabulous photos--which, by the way, everyone will appreciate.

I'm the outgoing vice president of NLAPW Palm Springs--we were honored to be among Matt's first speaking engagements--and have seen our members create beautiful digital art photography. Thanks to Matt's book, I now know how it was done! Artists seeking to sell and exhibit their work will find great career guidance. For other shutterbugs, the book will eliminate some of those photos that you cringe at later (I know I have a few!)

The image manipulation tips in Photoshop are extremely valuable. This is a terrific book, even if you've only toyed with the idea of doing digital photography. Matt's vivid, lively prose makes this a pleasurable read.

5 out of 5 stars You must get "Digital Art Photography for Dummies" if you shoot digital........2006-01-25

If you are a digital photographer that is starting out or trying to get into the "art" side, then this book is for you. This book is well written, easy to understand, and full of excellent images and great walk throughs. I can tell that Matt is very comfortable with this topic and is an expert in his field. It touches on many easy ways for new shutterbugs to expand their knowledge without taking the fun out of photography. His Adobe Photoshop knowledge is also very useful when post processing scans of film, slides, or negatives as well as existing digital images.
Matt, thanks for your time and energy in writing this book. I will recommend it to both family and friends.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too stylized.......2007-08-28

The pictures in this book are very beautiful, but I was hoping for more discussion of the basics of outdoor nature/flower photography, like lighting and composition. This book spends a great deal of time with mutliple images and zooming and "special effects" which are interesting but not really helpful if you are trying to take better pictures of flowers. Also, it seemed sort of repetetive at times.

Book Description

The idea of a photographer asking New York women he meets randomly to pose nude for him is not exactly new -- books with similar approaches include Peter Gorman's Naked in Apartment 7, Greg Friedler's Naked New York, and at a stretch, even Richard Kern's New York Girls -- but Andrew Einhorn does the job proficiently. Einhorn is in his late 30s, and according to his biographical paragraph, he lives in Manhattan and works as a photographer, videographer, editor and comedian.

The photographs are in black and white, taken in different people's appointments. The women look like they are mostly in their twenties, with a few being slightly older. Each has about 8 or 10 photographs, most about 4" x 6" in size. Einhorn manages to make his models relax and there is often a sense of fun to the pictures. (He also appears naked in the background in a few of the photographs.) Most of the women have tattoos, belly-button rings or nipple piercings. The first woman, Skye, has two kittens with her, clambering over her and looking very sweet. The contrast between the fluffy kitten and the metal of Skye's nipple rings is effective. Many other women pose with their cats or dogs. Other models use other props. Andrea smokes a cigarette in many of the pictures of her, while Cara inhales some marijuana in one. Various models lounge about on sofas, sit on the floor, or pose standing for the camera. Sometimes they try on different items of clothing or make funny faces.

As a collection of pictures of attractive women, Naked Happy Girls is pleasing and a little unusual. While undoubtedly erotic, it avoids most of the clichés of standard glamour photography. It remains voyeuristic and feminists might condemn it as objectivizing, but it certainly isn't pornographic by contemporary standards. The work is playful and even cheerful, showing beautiful women in natural light. Ultimately though, the book doesn't compare with more provocative and innovative nude photography. There are some strong images, especially those in which the subject looks directly and openly into the camera, because in those, the women convey their own power, and show themselves as equal to the photographer and the viewer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Studies of an urban naturalist.......2007-10-03

Einhorn's images make me think of those nature shows, the ones where the photographer goes into wild to shoot his subjects. Like the successful naturalist, Einhorn lets us see these wild, delicate creatures as they appear in their native environment. And, as the title promises, his subjects all look happy.

This thick book devotes a few pages to each of his models. Each section starts with a few sentences about the model - this one smokes cigars, that one likes red wine, another just bought a kitten. I like that. Just a few words celebrate the uniqueness of each woman, a warm contrast to other collections that don't even allow the model a name.

Black and white pictures allow degrees of flexibility that are hard with color photos. I don't mean darkroom tricks, but choices of light and dark or amounts of contrast. This, along with the subtlety of each model's appearance, just blows away the idea of race. Saying that any particular woman is "black" or "Asian" simply is not adequate. They're people, beautiful people who combine in themselves all the best of humanity's many faces. This isn't an arty or erotic collection, but it's a lot of fun.

3 out of 5 stars Only redeeming feature being cannot go wrong with pix of naked happy girls!!.......2007-08-01

I found this book a bit disappointing. Fair enough, the title suggests it is just gonna be `Naked, Happy Girls' and to that end it could hardly be called misleading. However, I guess I'd hoped for a little bit more. A little bit more composure to the photographs (not posed, just not quite so `passing snapshot'), a little bit more interest or theme than can be generated by a collection of photos of naked, happy girls. Spend a few Summers on the beach with lots of naked people and the novelty of naked, happy girls starts to fade and you need something more, it makes it too much like random photos of people just going about their business. Not a misleading title but once you realize that's the sum of the content it seems a bit........ and?

It feels like if this was a collection of your own photos of your own group of friends it would be perfect, but when it's someone else's collection of people not known to the reader it's too much like looking through someone else's personal photo albums.

Notwithstanding, if you'd like a little book of pictures of naked, happy girls this is just that-and naked, happy girls are always a guaranteed spirit lifter!!

Cheers

Lloyd

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to happy girls and classic silver based black and white photography.......2007-06-10

Indeed it is a line up of happy girls without much clothing around. All photographed in a good mood and by a good mooded photographer. These moods reflect well in the photos and it is a pleasure to read the introduction per person and view all photos one by one.

The book certainly shows that silver based black and white photography on film is very well suited for figure studies. With what seems like thousands of shades of grey the girls's skins tones are brougth onto paper very delicately.

Well done!

5 out of 5 stars fun and engaging photos.......2007-03-29

I'm a stickler for facial expressions--to me, they can either make or break a photograph. There's nothing worse than a model who looks stiff or uncomfortable or basically just emotionless. I was happy to find that the women in "Naked Happy Girls" look confident, comfortable and expressive.

...a cute little book with a liberal amount of fun and engaging photos.

5 out of 5 stars perfect gift indeed.......2006-12-27

I, too, bought this as a christmas gift for my boyfriend. It is very tastefully done and it's alot longer than I expected! I also like the way Mr. Einhorn "sets the scene" in a paragraph or two before each girl's shoot. It makes for intresting reading and gives them individuality... not just a myriad of [......] While not every girl is smack-you-in-the-face-beautiful, it is fun to find beauty in every girl. I will definately get Bubble Bath Girls based on this book.

Book Description

This book features an amusing collection of signs from around the world. Divided into chapters by type (animals, men, stop, danger, weapons, transport, children, toilets, work, "no!", etc.), the signs demonstrate how different cultures portray the icons with which we are all so familiar. The diverse selection of photographs is accompanied by texts describing the cultural and social significance of signs. You may even learn things from this book that could save your life the next time you travel!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars odd, fun book.......2004-12-12

This collection of 1000 signs covers everything from postings you see every day to those that are unique to various locations, such as Australia's kangaroo crossing sign. Chapters are: Animals, Man, Stop, Dog, Transport, Children, Miscellaneous, Danger, Weapons, Toilets, No! and Work. Not much text, printed in English, German and French. Photos are in color. Photographers and locations credited, but no index. This is a goofy but fun book, and interesting to leaf through.

5 out of 5 stars Signposting around the planet........2004-07-10

The title of this intriguing chunky photo book has a word missing, it should have been '1000 ROAD SIGNS'. Actually probably about 940 official highway signs and the rest being privately made but still relating to roads. The three-language text for the twelve chapters (Animals, Man, Stop, Dog, Transport, Children, Miscellaneous, Danger, Weapons, Toilets, No! and Work) is on single pages and mixed into the relevant photo sections. Considering that the subject matter is rather uninspiring, visually this book looks rather good, photos are twelve, six, four or one to a page and there are plenty of spreads with one photo.

There are some pretty weird signs, too. One from South Africa has an explanation mark in a triangle with three words below, 'CAUTION ROAD STOLEN', Australia has a no swearing sign, a red outline circle with a red diagonal across the body of a man, by his head there are five marks, *!#"?.

I'm not quite sure who this book is aimed at, highway engineers and transport planners, graphic designers, or readers who go for quirky books (me) but as it was produced in conjunction with Colors Magazine (Taschen published their '1000 Extraordinary Objects ISBN 382285851X) you can be assured of something a bit different to leave on your coffee table.

Book Description

Color and Mastering for Digital Cinema explores the implications for motion picture post production processes and changes required to the supporting equipment and software. While a new concept to the motion picture community, the selection of the wide gamut, output-referred XYZ color space for digital cinema distribution is based on decades of color science and experience in other industries. The rationale for choosing XYZ and the other color encoding parameters is explained and the book also provides a full case study of the development of DLP Cinema® projectors by Texas Instruments. Finally, this book explores how the XYZ color encoding concept can be extended to support enhanced display technologies in the future.

This book contains:

* Brilliant 4-color illustrations that compliment the color science explanations

* Never before published industry information from author Glenn Kennel, a world leader in digital cinema color technology

* Descriptions of key issues and background on decisions that were made in the standardization process

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read in the most part.......2007-05-11

This book is an interesting mix of quite technically (and mathematically) detailed chapters and lighter, more readable text. Certainly not a good choice for anyone totally new to color theory or digital cinema but a very concise account of the current state of the industry with some very interesting historical perspective.

Concise is a very good word to describe this text. By textbook standards it is short - I was able to read it cover to cover on a five hour flight. In places it is too concise - I found the color theory difficult to follow in places and a slightly more long winded, descriptive style might not have gone wrong in those sections. I'm planning to go back and re-read those chapters and they will hopefully beging to be a little more clear second time around!

Overall this is a good choice for anyone with a professional interest in digital cinema and digital intermediate workflow. Those outside the industry or who are looking for a more introductory text should probably look elsewhere.

Book Description

A current overview of Display Systems, written by recognised experts in the field. This book gives practical guidance on the latest technological developments and new application areas of displays which will enable the reader to gain an understanding of the current state of the art as well as the major trends that will shape future applications of displays and display systems. Display Systems offers an insight into display technology with a view to defining its best potential, by focusing on performance assessment and optimum utilisation. It brings together complimentary disciplines of design, hardware and usage, covering a wide range of developments, and is written by leading international experts. The book is divided into three sections: (1) requirements for display systems, covering topics such as applications and evaluation; (2) display technology, covering developments in flat panel displays as well as CRTs; and (3) display characterisation, including measurement techniques and colour specification. Also covered are ergonomic requirements for display systems and their mutual dependence on standards. The book will be welcomed by scientists, technologists and engineers active in the field and also by the developers of a wide range of systems and applications for displays. Its technical content is suitable for final year undergraduate or postgraduate study. The Society for Information Display (SID) is an international society which has the aim of encouraging the development of all aspects of the field of information display. Indeed, it is the only international society dedicated solely to this field, which is broad and interdisciplinary, not only in the scientific sense, but through development and manufacturing to marketing. Wiley SID Series in Display Technology This volume is the first in the series which aims to present a comprehensive technical discussion of the many disciplines which must be combined in the development of display systems. Further volumes will be announced in due course and more information on SID, its aims and activities can be found from its home page.

In the 7 years since the publication of this book, display hardware has continued to improve. You may wonder, is the book still relevant?

Yes, for two reasons. Firstly, the rate of improvement of display hardware has not been as rapid as Moore's Law, which tends to apply to memory/cpu/disk. CRTs and thin displays tend to drop in price far less rapidly.

Secondly, many of the issues described in the book are largely independent of any specific hardware in which they are implemented. Like the suggestions for optimal ergonomic design. Or, in a given display, how to layout the information.

But having said the above, there is one thing that has arisen in the intervening years that is little covered in the book. Nowadays, cellphones have become far more common and far more powerful. The latest have colour displays. As time goes on, we can expect these displays to have ever greater resolution. So now, in some platforms like J2ME, the design of software optimised for such constrained hardware is an important issue.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Great Book on Photographing Children.......2007-06-17

Cheryl Machat's sensitivity and unique perspective are wonderfully apparent in this collection of photography lessons. This book is from an artist for an artist. Machat, with technical perfection and a soft heart, sees kids. The pictures are raw and the children are real. This book may not appeal to the frightened beginner who wants/needs to doll-up kids, but parents and artist are going to love it. Check out her work at Cherylmachatdorskind.com. Unbelievable!

2 out of 5 stars Just plain bad.......2006-08-19

I will admit that the text is not bad. There is some good advice on every aspect of photographing children. However, what is bad about this book is that the photographs are just horrible. Compositions are poor, lighting is poor, focus is poor. If you are looking to learn a lot about photographing children, you really won't from this book.

5 out of 5 stars A guide for amateur and professional photographers alike.......2005-03-13

The Art of Photographing Children: Techniques for Making Better Color, Black and White, Handcolored, and Digital Pictures is a no-nonsense guide for amateur and professional photographers alike. Chapters discuss optimum equipment, lighting, composition, and more, such as how to capture an important moment, and tips for running a smooth photo shoot. The easy-to-follow narration accompanies a wealth of black-and-white and color photographs that keenly illustrate points and principles discussed. Highly recommended for proud parents seeking to succinctly capture their child's milestones on film, family portrait experts striving to improve their craft, and every photographer in between.
