5 out of 5 stars The Photographer's Business Bible.......2007-03-12

If Your the type of photographer who just wants to shoot nice photos this book may not be for you. But if your trying to start a business as a photographer you may want to strap yourself in. I find that ASMP Professional Business Practices in photography: Sixth Edition is the perfect book to get photographers started in addition to lerning how to run a photo Business in the real world. Some of the contents reenforced what I already knew while other contents helped me with some of my weak points. ASMP Professional Business Practices in photography covers a large specturem of different types of photography and I will no doubt refer to the book in the future.
Sometimes young adults will tell me that they want to become photographers and I just tell them to major in business and minor photography, But if you missed that boat this book is the next best thing.

4 out of 5 stars A Camel.......2005-07-16

Amongst professional photographers it's almost an axiom that they knew little about the business end of photography when they started taking pictures for a living. This book aims at remedying that condition. It has chapters on assignment and stock photography; pricing and estimating; negotiating fees and agreements; rights and value; formalizing agreements; copyright; electronic technology, business and marketing strategies; book publishing; and professional services. Unfortunately, like a camel, which is a horse built by a committee, this book varies widely in its usefulness for the business of photography. Among other reasons, this is because the chapters, and sometimes parts of chapters, are written by different authors, so that the work is not integrated and some important business areas are omitted.

The first two chapters which deal generally with the nature of stock photography versus assignment photography are quite good and will be helpful to anyone making the transition from one type to another.

Some chapters are first rate. The chapter on pricing and estimating takes an economic approach rather then asking, "what are my competitors charging?" It asks the question what price does the photographer need to establish in order to support himself and his business. Unfortunately, the book is not blunt enough to say that, if you don't expect to get the resulting price, you shouldn't be in the market.

At the other end of the scale is the chapter on marketing. Apparently six different authors each contributed their own uncoordinated efforts. There's some good advice here, but my litmus test was whether the book contained some discussion of how a fine arts photographer finds and approaches galleries. There wasn't much help here.

One area that many photographers encounter trouble with is keeping the books and paying income taxes. Unfortunately there were no references to these subjects. Even if all the book did were refer to a basic text or software, like Quicken or Quick Books and Turbo Tax, which were readily available at the time of publication, it would have been helpful.

This book is a useful guide for the professional photographer to keep on his shelf for a quick answer to many questions he may encounter in business. But for detailed answers, professional photographers will require more help in running their business.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Landscape Photography Around.......2007-09-22

For someone who invested a bit of cash in two Nikon DSLRs, filters, cases, accessories as I have, I am just happy to find a book that showed me what the cameras I have would be capable of doing if I used what I had properly. I took numerous examples from the book and went out did what was written and the photos I got were great. I also purchased some gear the author recommended which benefited me on my shoots as well as not buying some stuff that I really would not need thus saving some money. The pictures, settings and filters listed in the book allowed me to make a quickie card list of situational shooting scenes that I carry with me for quick reference till I get good at this. Everyone who is interested in landscape photography needs this book. What started out as just something to do, has turned into a full time hobby with the help of this book. Five stars plus is my rating. PS I take the book to read at work during opportune times to gather as much as I can from the book. The author did a great job.

5 out of 5 stars Includes the details you've been searching for!.......2007-09-17

The excellent National Audubon Society Guide to Landscape Photography, includes camera and exposure info, plus which filters are used and even how the filters are oriented in their holder! Filling a book with pretty pictures (as National Geographic's guide does) teaches me nothing. Telling me how to orient and expose using a Graduated Neutral Density filter (a la Audubon Guide) will allow me to duplicate their results!

It's also VERY "digital friendly", comparing each technique for both film and digital cameras.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars National Audubon Society Guide to Landscape Photography.......2007-05-13

An outstanding book. Probably learned more from this book than I have in 30 years of experience. Directly to the essence of what one needs to know to get into the field knowing what one really needs to know no more no less. Very very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2007-04-18

I've read many books on landscape photography and this is easily the best. Here, an excellent photographer tells you exactly what he does - how he thinks about lighting and composition, what equipment he thinks is important, how he manages equipment, etc. It is specific, interesting, intelligently written and illustrated with beautiful photos.

I consider myself to be an intermediate landscape photograher. This book fleshed out a lot of concepts I have been slowly becoming aware of. Now instead of sort of knowing what I'm trying to accomplish, I'm more certain.

I would not recommend this book for beginners. For example, if you don't know how to quickly relate aperature, shutter speed, depth of field and ISO and evaluate their inherent tradeoffs, there are a lot of good introductory books out there that explain these types of things in great detail. But if you have been shooting landscapes for a while and are looking for insights, this is the book for you.

Book Description

How does the spectacle of the sufferings of others (via television or newsprint) affect us? Are viewers inured-or incited-to violence by the depiction of cruelty? In Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag takes a fresh look at the representation of atrocity-from Goya's The Disasters of War to photographs of the American Civil War, lynchings of blacks in the South, and the Nazi death camps, to contemporary horrific images of Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Israel and Palestine, and New York City on September 11, 2001. In Regarding the Pain of Others Susan Sontag once again changes the way we think about the uses and meanings of images in our world, and offers an important reflection about how war itself is waged (and understood) in our time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Book that Everybody Must Read!!!.......2007-09-15

Susan Sontag only passed away recently. She was more of a philosopher, social activist, literary critic, and essayist than a fictional writer. In this book, she points out British writer Virginia Woolfe's view of war in today's society. War is a crime and an outrage where ever it might be whether it's in the boardroom, Wall Street, Sarajevo, Kabul, Baghdad, etc. War comes in many shapes and forms but what does war really mean to us. Is it about killing human lives or what about the destruction of the human soul in our society, we are transformed by the images displayed on cable television about the two wars going on and the lives lost. We are close to four thousand American soldiers being killing in Iraq. We had no reason to go but we did and now we must clean up the mess. I totally support our troops overseas because they are selfless human beings who would sacrifice their lives for their country. But what about the leaders who sent them there only to return home in coffins or end up at Walter Reed Medical Center for the injured veterans. Are the injured better off than the casualties? Maybe not because they have to live with their images of war and their actions. Sontag's book works because it makes us think about war without thinking so much about it. Where do we stand? Of course, it would be a perfect world without war and peace prevailed but war is a fact of life. Maybe Sontag should have used examples of wartime strategies that are not so gory or gloom with images of death and destruction. She did not live long enough to see Hurricane Katrina's devastation of the Gulf Coast. What about the business world where casualties are not just in coffins but at the unemployment office? This book made me think so that's why I'm writing about this situation. We lose 18,000 Americans every year because they lack health insurance, that's six times the amount of the victims of September 11, 2001. Maybe we don't have to declare war, uninsured Americans are at war with a society who has neglected them or disregarded their needs for whatever reason.

4 out of 5 stars Suggestive but incomplete.......2007-01-10

Sontag's essay is concerned with the moral implications of looking, through photographs, at people who are suffering or dead. Much of the book is a history of war photography, which is intimately bound with the history of public tolerance of violent photos. While Sontag does not provide any revolutionary ideas, the essay is a succinct and thorough examination of the issues surrounding photography. And, if there is no grand thesis to keep in mind, her exploration is full of smaller, thought-provoking observations. She notes, for example, that displaying photos of dead bodies is less taboo the more foreign and faraway those bodies are. Until she pointed it out, I had not even realised how North American coverage of 9-11 included practically no pictures of corpses, although picturing the dead in foreign conflicts is an expectable way of rallying support for the victims. Her remarks on the way a photo replaces the memory of the thing itself are, if not surprising, good to have restated.

Sontag also does not ignore the uncomfortable reality of the pleasure which most people have in regarding suffering, but in this as in many areas of her essay, I wished that she would go further, spend more time teasing out and elaborating her analysis -- I wished, in other words, that she had written a real book-length book, not a long essay. On the other hand, the incompleteness of her discussion means that it is particularly good at stimulating further thought, at opening questions rather than closing them off.

5 out of 5 stars Sontag adds here name to the after postmodernism movement.......2006-05-30

Sontag questions her ideas that have influenced half a centary. She is not alone Terry Eagleton (After Theory), Elain Showalter, Sandra Gilbert, and even Derrida (life.after theory) have done the same

4 out of 5 stars Visual means are not enough to understand visual realities .......2006-01-22

As another reviewer of this book on Amazon has pointed out the title of this book is somewhat misleading. This is not a general consideration of the subject of how we regard the pain of others. And it is too not even a comprehensive treatment of how we regard the pain of strangers when that is represented to us through the media. It is rather a kind of historical consideration of the subject of representation of war through visual images, and how that has effected its intended audience.
Sontag begins with the horrifying representations of Goya, considers Civil War photography, images of the two great wars, including images of the Holocaust, representations of 9/11 and of recent horrors in Kossovo, and what her publisher refers to as Israel/Palestine.
As another Amazon reviewer has pointed out she does not really make a coherent strong argument. Her essay is a loose discursive one, written in her ordinary complex, awkward and difficult to understand style.
One important insight she has is that 'photographs' will always have a place for us because we can contemplate and remember them in the way we cannot the flow of images in video or film. The startling images that remain in mind of horrors of war are those given in photographs. And she too points out that it is the content of these photographs which is important, and that often the work done by amateurs who catch a vital moment is more memorable than that of professionals. This was she writes the case with many Holocaust photos, and also with the photos from 9/11.
Sontag wrote this book while she herself was going through the pain of terminal cancer. And for me this gives her absorption with the subject a certain authenticity.
Nonetheless I believe that she has only scratched the surface of the questions raised about the 'public presentation of the horrors of war'. The guilt over being entertained by the nightly news horror is one question i.e. whether 'looking at such photos' is not in a certain way a kind of 'moral failing'. But of course this when the 'turning away' can also be a moral fault.
But this leads to what I believe is a major error in the whole enterprise, the whole laying out of the subject. Photos alone , video alone cannot give enough background and context to make the reality wholly understandable. To see something horrible and be repelled by it( a little girl running naked with her hands up as in the famous Vietnam war photo, or emaciated bodies lying on bunk beds unable to move- as in photos of the liberation of concentration camps) is humane, and moral. But to really understand those realities, and all the realities which she is writing about a person has to know what is going on in a deeper way.
Here I come to another kind of criticism of Sontag, one which relates to her work in general. Her extreme - left often anti-American views have always repelled me. In this book she talks about how militants from both sides of the Israeli/ Arab Palestinian conflict look at their own victims. She picks as the Israeli victim one blown up in a suicide - bombing in Sbarro pizza in Jerusalem. And she picks as the Palestinian victim a child hit by an Israeli tank shell. These examples and her presentation of them it seems to me expose a basic misperception and immorality in her whole enterprise. The Israeli victims in Sbarro including four members of one family were civilians who were deliberately targeted. A photo of their scattered remains would no doubt be horrifying. A Palestinian child torn apart by a tank shell would present a no less horrifying picture. And it would fill every decent person with revulsion. But the fact is nonetheless that Israeli tankists do not fire deliberately at civilians. In fact they have orders to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties. This is in complete opposition to the policy of Palestinian terror groups who aim to murder and maim.
Being horrified by the images does not enable us to understand fully the reality.
Again the main point is that a more comprehensively truthful approach to the visual representations would have to closely relate them to literary presentations.
Finally. Sontag makes the point that the horrors of war cannot be understood really by those who have never really been in such wars. I believe that she is probably right. But that does not mean that those who have been exposed automatically have higher moral judgment.
As I understand it Sontag throughout her writing life, raised real questions but provided most often inadequate and even morally mistaken answers.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Career Bookend.......2005-08-23

I think this book would be more aptly called "Regarding War Photography" or "War Photography as Metaphor" (keeping Sontag-style titles intact). Unfortunately misnamed, this is a book about the effect of war photography on the viewer. It's about representation and what the image means to us, what the absence of an image does or doesn't mean to us. Not a book about the pain of others, it demonstrates how images of others' pain shape our views of their pain.

Sontag writes a brief history of war imagery, beginning with the advent of photography (the result of the amount of time required to take a picture) to faster and lighter cameras (likely to capture, rather than to re-recreate or to show only war's aftermath), to television, to the present (the internet, constant access and the expectation of constant access to images). She goes back, pre-photography, to discuss a few specific paintings that depict war or other suffering. She describes the methodology of the photographs--often naming specific images and photographers--analyzes their impact, how the images are viewed during the war and, because of the images, the war thought of by future generations.

Her interpretations are largely familiar and unchanged since "On Photography," but "Regarding the Pain of Others" discusses only war photography. That her analyses are expected doesn't detract from them; Sontag's input about this topic is valuable -- some early war photographs are staged; specific atrocities have become more urgent or real after being viewed; photojournalism is given a special veracity unlike other art forms; images shape our memories of wars that took place in prior generations. Sontag is clear about disbelieving in "collective memory" and states that it is the artifacts, photographs, we are left with that determine our feelings.

Worth seeking out is a shorter piece Sontag wrote called "Regarding the Torture of Others" (quite true to its title) after the Abu Ghirab prison photographs were released. In a way, it's a finer example of what this book achieves, though far more condensed.

Toward the end, she revisits "On Photography." She's recently re-read it and isn't sure if she agrees with certain elements. She debates herself in a way, though in my opinion, only in the smaller scheme of her general argument about representation and its relationship to fact and result. On a personal level, I was glad to see her revisit "On Photography." It read as a celebration of her groundbreaking work and ways of thinking about photographic representation. The circular nature, yet diffierent topics, discussed at the start and near end of her brilliant life and career rendered this, for me, satisfying and somewhat sad. I will miss her flow of opinions.

Since the 10.5 million images in National Geographic's possession won't fit in a book, the 250 in this moderately glossy, minimally costly collection will do nicely. Through the Lens is a stunning collection of photos judiciously apportioned to represent the regions of the earth, the sea, and outer space; humans and nature; and even the history of the medium--a few historic black and whites contrast dramatically with the eye-popping modern color shots that dominate the book. As ever, the esthetic key to their impact is the use of big, emotional pictures with witty little captions, and whenever possible, startling juxtapositions. A Boston matron's faux-fur coat looks just like her pet Dalmatian (the caption identifies them as "spots fans"). The world's widest street (in Buenos Aires) by night looks great next to a grassy highway overpass for grizzly bears in Alberta. The famous green-eyed Afghan refugee poses in a purple burkha with her 1985 National Geographic cover. A Moscow shopper tries on a snowsuit, oblivious to the huge face in the ad on the wall behind him, whose nose he obscures and smile he bisects. A fuzzy shot of a 1907 inventor testing a multiwinged "Katydid" flying machine contrasts with a crisp 1974 shot of Skylab soaring far above fluffy clouds. Often, what's striking is the juxtaposition of ideas. An Arctic wolf making an impossible leap between ice floes arcs in midair, only its reflection hitting the frigid water. A 1935 Model T "surfs" a steep dune in White Sands, New Mexico. Chorus lines of stuffed cane-toad corpses with surreally clothespinned snouts perform on a taxidermist's shelf. Newborns are lined up like bread loaves in Shanghai. A woman in a white chador sits in the Tripoli airport, the white lines of fluorescent ceiling bulbs radiating behind her head like a saint's halo. This isn't the fanciest photo book of the season, but it certainly is a good deal. -Tim Appelo

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my animal-loving son!.......2002-07-31

Bought this for my son's 6th birthday after reading all the reviews. I am definitely impressed. It has beautiful pictures - to be expected from National Geographic. It also provides a map highlighting the habitat for each animal and a pronunciation key as well. The text is interesting but not too technical for younger readers and each animal gets more than just a paragraph or two. It will grow well with him. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for your Kids.......2001-07-22

My son loves animals and received this book for Christmas two years ago. He continues to read this book every day. He is now six and this book have been his passion. He reads it to find out where each mammal lives and what he or she eats. What I found very good with this book was the fact that this was the book that helped him to start to read as well as got him interested in geography - "Dad, I didn't know that lemurs lived in Madagascar!" - What's a lemur and where is Madagascar?

I have bought a number of other mammal's books for him, but he always comes back to this book, even with the scotch-taped pages and duct taped cover. I recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Instructive reference book on mammals for 3rd grade and up........1998-10-31

This book is an excellent encyclopedic reference on mammals for children and adults alike. It has the high quality photographs that one would expect of National Geographic. The information on each mammal is detailed enough to hold interest, yet no so long as to become tedious.

Best of all, it is readable by many precocious 3rd graders! Adults, however, should not be turned away. This is a great book for animal lovers of all ages.

Book Description

The beauty and spectacle of nature are celebrated in vivid and inspiring images, from the grand edifice of Lone Pine Peak bathed in morning mist to the sturdy and statuesque Douglas firs of the Pacific Northwest to Mount Trundle’s distinctive tilted profile reflected in a tranquil lake. It is nature at its most awe-inspiring. With lush photographs beautiful in composition and vibrant in color, Audubon Nature celebrates nature’s very essence and marvels in its drama. Both a tribute to our unspoiled wilderness treasures and an affirmation of nature’s raw power, this is North America at its most glorious and resplendent.

BECUASE OF A "METAL" PIECE THAT CONSTRUCTS THIS BEAUTIFUL CALENDAR, THE PRISON WHERE MY SON IS, REFUSED TO LET HIM HAVE IT. I AM HOPING THAT A SUGGESTION CAN BE MADE TO THE COMPANY THAT DISTRIBUTES THESE. THE AM0UNT OF PEOPLE SHOPPING FOR LOVE ONES IN BOND IS HUGE. I AM HOPING THAT THEY WILL PUT A CALENDAR TOGETHER WITHOUT THE STEEL BAR. THERE HAS TO BE A WAY TO DO THIS. I ALSO WISH TO MENTION THAT HOSPITALS FOR ALCOHOL OR DRUG REHAB AND ALL PSYCHIATRIC FACILITES HAVE THE SAME REQUIREMENTS AS THE PRISON SYSTEM. THIS COMPANY IS ELIMINATING A HUGE AMOUNT CUSTOMERS. I HOPE THIS SUGGESTION WILL BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. I HAVE BEEN A NURSE FOR 36 YRS. AND WORKED PSYCH UNITS MOST OF THAT TIME. THANKS..............

I'd look at the Sierra Club calendar instead. The Sierra Club calendar is in a nicer format (pages are longer and hangs better on your wall), and the pictures are consistently beautiful or awe-inspiring.

Beautiful photos of our America with ample space to write day notes. I have bought this wall calendar various times.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Photographs.......2007-01-29

This book contains full page photos, many of which I had never seen before. The clarity of the photographs is comparable to the digital photos we are able to take now. Although the book consists mainly of photos of buildings (of course) there are many which include pedestrians, carriages, automobiles, signs, etc. I think this book would be interesting to anyone studying Chicago, the history of the time period, architecture, clothing or photography, or to anyone who simply loves old photographs. The only complaint I have is that some of the photos were not dated. Very good book!

5 out of 5 stars Big City Big Look.......2006-07-25

Great look into the "City of Big Shoulders" at the turn of the century. Good aid to understanding of urban America at the beginning of the 20Th Century

2 out of 5 stars Photographs of Chicago during the early 20th century.......2005-07-19

I have been to Chicago many years since I lived in IL from 1933 to 1963. My mother's people came to Chicago in the 1830's.
I found the early photos extremely interesting as I am a former teacher of both high school & college history. I reall liked this book as I had seen it before & could not locate another copy until I saw it on Amazon.
Many Thanks for stocking this item.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Views of Old Chicago.......2000-04-02

I can't say enough about this collection. This book includes a number of photographs that I have not seen in any other book. The large format allows one to see a lot of detail as every photo gets a full page.

Photography has always been an outlet to certain visionaries in our society. Giving them a way to express to others the way they interpret somewhat ordinary and sometimes not so ordinary sights. This collection of images inspires all those who look at them. And then combining these with words of inspiratin and thought provoking prose makes it a treat to the soul as well as the eyes.

Through the years, National Geographic magazine's staff photographers have often elevated stock depictions of "exotic" cultures into haunting glimpses of other lives. In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits presents a century of captivating images of ordinary people from around the world--280 photographs of pleasure, grief, stoicism, shyness and sheer endurance. In thoughtful essays, five photographers frankly assess changing notions of authenticity and discuss their own methods of capturing a stranger's personality on the run. In the beginning, the magazine showed people stiffly posed in their native costumes, viewed as anthropological specimens. Advances in camera technology created a greater degree of intimacy and spontaneity. Then came color film, which ushered in an era dominated by corny themes and perkily posed subjects in brightly hued clothing. The 1970s marked a new honesty in portraiture, a willingness to go beyond the superficial to investigate the small moments that make up daily life everywhere.

In Focus draws upon the magazine's complete archives to raise intriguing questions about how editorial choices help define our understanding of the world. For example, in 1981, National Geographic published Sam Abell's elegiac portrait of Rosa--the last of the Yahgan Indians of Terra del Fuego--wreathed in atmospheric smoke against a dark background, in the stately tradition of Edward S. Curtis. We also see one of Abell's unpublished photos of Rosa in her modest home, grimacing as she stands in the blue light of her TV, next to a poster commemorating the restoration of Chile's constitution in 1980. The gallery of portraits in this splendid book includes many memorable faces, from the unnerving grin of the Wodaabe tribesman in Niger (who wears colorful makeup as part of a courtship ritual) to the sunny self-possession of a child in Murmansk who holds up four tiny fingers to indicate her age. Beautiful women abound--they have helped sell the magazine from its earliest days. As the decades go by, people everywhere seem more at ease being photographed. But they remain as fascinating as ever, perhaps because we'll never know what they were thinking when the shutter clicked. —Cathy Curtis

    Book Description

National Geographic Greatest Portraits tells the story of portrait photography through the eyes-and words-of five accomplished National Geographic photographers. The book showcases images never-before-seen alongside award-winning favorites. New and fascinating text reveals photographers' individual experiences photographing people and their evaluation of NG portraits produced during each decade-from the late-19th century until today. National Geographic Greatest Portraits opens with a beautiful and surprising look at National Geographic's contribution to the knowledge of the world's peoples through photography. Five chapters follow, each spanning approximately two decades and covering an era in world history and photographic style. The chapters are: Before 1930 (Exploring the power of photography), 1930s-1940s (The Great Depression and World War II), 1950s-1960s (Bright colors and perky smiles), 1970s-1980s (Back to realism), 1990s-Present (Everything is relative). Each of these chapters is a portrait of the world.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-01-09

I got this as a gift for my cousin who had just finished getting his B.A. in Photography. I had gone to Barnes & Nobles to get it and I was going to buy it and ship it to him but b/c this book is so heavy, it would probably have cost me twice as much. I found it here on Amazon for less and shipping was included!!!

    4 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL!!!.......2006-07-03

This book is gorgeous! The images are amazing and the stories/articles are a wonderful accessory to the photography. AND, what a bargain!!!! It is hard back and HUGE...well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Be inspired by the best of the pros.......2004-12-06

This is truly one of the great books of people pictures, a treasure chest of images truly deserving the self-imposed subtitle of "greatest portraits".

Trust me on this. Having spent almost 40 years in the news business as a reporter, photographer and editor, I have some experience in recognizing good pictures and hiring people who can produce good pictures. By any standard, these are great pictures.

A "great picture" hinges on an intangible called the moment of peak action. Let me explain that by referring to a photo not in this book; the angry defiant look of Sir Winston Churchill in the portrait by Yousouf Karsh of Ottawa, Canada. Churchill was angry because Karsh had just taken away his cigar, which Churchill had just lit of relax after a speech to the Canadian parliament. It's probably the most famous portrait ever of Churchill.

Had I taken that picture, instead of the angry portrait I'd have waited and asked Churchill to "smile". As everyone knows, it would have been a lousy picture of a great man. Karsh had the genius to recognize the precise moment of peak action; likewise, in picture after picture in this book, I saw the same superb talent in capturing the most evocative expression of the subjects. This is the heart of great photography; I think I can recognize it, just as an art critic can recognize a great painting without being able to do it.

Photography is the most accessible of the arts; every parent wants "great" pictures of their children, every lover wants "great" pictures of their beloved, every tourist wants that memorable vacation memory. This book is a superb course in what great pictures look like; it's not just a museum of the finest, it's also a teaching example of "here's what a good picture is like" for anyone who takes pictures. This quality can inspire your quality.

If we are to learn, we might as well learn from the best whenever possible; if we are to enjoy great art, we might as well have the best. This book is an example of both; the price is incredible for such a treasure trove. It's awesome.

Buy it; it'll improve your pictures, and your life.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointingly average and too politically correct.......2004-10-31

Considering the millions of images created by National Geographic over the decades, this collection of portraits of "ordinary people" is disappointing. The images are defintiely not the most striking. The commentaries by photographers and editorial comments do no justice to the collection. The political correctness is overwhelming and entirely unnecessary. For example, the admission "[e]ntire tableaux were arranged to illustrate imagined lives in popular Geographic stories about American cities and states and exotic foreign metropolises and villages." No kidding? That's real news - especially when followed by "[i]ronically, the arrange of elaborate scenes for the sake of photography has become very fashionable these days."

    Huh? What's the point?

Many of the photos are indeed transcendant, but the majority are mundane. Overall, a disappointing collection.

    Jerry
