Book Description

After September 11th, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. By ingenuity and sheer determination, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded right of entry into Ground Zero.

For 9 months, during the day and night, Meyerowitz photographed "the pile," as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. Influenced by Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange's work for the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression, he knew that if he didn't make a photographic record of the unprecedented recovery efforts, "there would be no history."

Marking the 5th anniversary of September 11th, Phaidon Press has published this extraordinary new book AFTERMATH: THE WORLD TRADE CENTER ARCHIVE with photographs and text by Joel Meyerowitz, which will feature, for the first time, the vast collection of Meyerowitz's previously unpublished photos from Ground Zero along with the engaging account of his experience in his own words. This historic publication is the only existing photographic record of the monumental recovery efforts post-9/11.

From portraits of the people he met to the accidental beauty of the ruins at dusk, AFTERMATH features 400 breathtaking color photographs, many taken with a large format camera. Bronx-born Meyerowitz brings his trademark sensitivity, intelligence and eye for beauty to these poignant images that will hold an important place in American history.

AFTERMATH brings to life the tireless determination of the scores of individuals who assisted in the clean-up process, including construction workers, police officers, firefighters, welders or "burners," engineers, crane operators and volunteers. Presented on a monumental scale, and interspersed with fascinating stories, the book documents the transformation of the site chronologically from piles of devastation to an empty pit six stories below ground. This landmark book offers current and future generations the opportunity to finally travel inside a forbidden city where thousands were brought together by a common cause.

"I was taking pictures for everyone who didn't have access to the site," says Meyerowitz in AFTERMATH, "so I decided to work with a large-format wooden view camera. This camera was impossible to hide, but it enabled me to make images of the fullest description, with a sense of deep space. I wanted to communicate what it felt like to be in there as well as what it looked like: to show the pile's incredible intricacy and visceral power.... I could provide a window for everyone else who wanted to be there, too--to help, or to grieve, or simply to try to understand what had happened to our city."

The World Trade Center Archive, consisting of thousands of Meyerowitz's images, is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York where it is available for research, exhibition and publication. For the past few years, a small selection of these photographs was featured in an exhibition, "After September 11: Images from Ground Zero," which traveled to more than 200 cities in 60 countries, reaching over 3.5 million people.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of photographs by a very gifted photographer.......2007-07-14

I first saw photographs from this collection at the Museum of Modern Art in Salzburg, Austria. Anyone who entered the gallery was immediately struck by a panorama of ground zero on one wall, each emitting an audible gasp, then standing before it for several minutes in silence. Meyerowitz is an extremely gifted photgrapher, and I recommend other of his collections for viewing. Cape Light: Color Photographs by Joel Meyerowitz, Tuscany: Inside the Light: Inside the Light (Photography). The "Aftermath" collection is the only archive of the activities following 9/11 at ground zero, and it is quite moving. Meyerowitz had access to many vantage points to capture for posterity the many facets of ground zero and this tragic event in our history. Viewing these photos takes time and thought, as Meyerowitz has also included brief descriptions and stories about each photograph. You will be struck by many emotions, sadness, anger, shock, and awe. But, there is an eeriness and a beauty, as well as hope in these photographs, inspired by the photographer's exquisite eye for detail, composition, lines, faces, and light. Photographers, professional and amateur alike, will deeply appreciate and learn from these aspects. Anyone to whom I have shown this book has been as immensely moved as I, from the UPS driver who delivered the package, to my father, a refugee of WWII, who still cannot speak easily of the events of 9/11. This book is highly recommended as an addition for one's library.

5 out of 5 stars A True Memorial.......2007-04-13

Aftermath represents the efforts of Joel Meyerowitz to document the destruction and cleanup of the World Trade Center following 9/11. This is a beefy coffee table book that is large enough to give his photos some real impact. Unlike most photo essays, however, you won't find hundreds of beautiful images. After a couple of pages show what New York's skyline once looked like, you are confronted by image after image of the horrific destruction of these huge landmarks. There are also many instances where we see the people who worked the cleanup site. Many of these are the most moving images as you can imagine the emotions that sometimes overcame these men and women who were there every day for months on end.

In addition to the photos, Mr. Meyerowitz also shares some anecdotes about what he went through to get these photos. He also talks about some of the people he met. I found these stories at least as powerful as his words. Most Americans were obviously distraught by the events of that day, but most of us were also able to start moving on with our lives and slowly put it behind us. But these people were there on the ground confronting the effects for months. Recovering bodies and personal objects, as well as being asked by survivors to put mementos on the pile of rubble as little memorials to their lost loved ones.

This is not the happiest book you can buy. It doesn't have the prettiest photos or the most elegant prose. But it may be the most worthwhile book I've ever purchased. I would urge everyone to buy a copy and read it cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentary.......2007-03-28

I have other books on the 9/11 disaster but this is by far the most comprehensive. The photographs are excellent. The price was reasonable for the quality.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible 9-11 Photos!!.......2007-03-04

Of all the books on the aftermath of 9-11, this is absolutely the best ever!! These photographs are stunning and capture all of the remaining structures at Ground Zero. This is the most comprehensive book I have seen to date. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Too many words, not enough images.......2004-06-13

This book is more of a written history of street photography than a visual history. Too much space is given up to text, and there aren't enough images to satisfy.

Nevertheless, the book is an interesting read, or should I say an interesting skim. I skimmed through the text, stopping to read interesting bits here and there. Had those interesting bits been retained, much of the rest of the text eliminated and more images included, it would be a 5-star book.

One other comment is that the emphasis is on American street photography, to the point that some notable non-American street photographers are excluded completely.

5 out of 5 stars street photography descibed in detail.......2004-03-01

A history of street photography described in both text and photos. The authors are well knowledged in the field and provide a very well layed out book that is enjoyable to read. A great coffee table book.

4 out of 5 stars it's the photos..........2002-05-22

BYSTANDER embraces the social & cultural history of street photography. It touches upon the works of master photographers, yet leaves out so much about the actual photographs.

Trying to follow Meyerowitz's & Westerbeck's conversation, both obviously deeply emotional about the subject of street photography, simply went over my head in a rush of technical details & passionate positing as to why which photographer did what.

It is, however, the photographs in BYSTANDER that draw you back, again & again. The earliest ones that beg to have been enlarged, so rich in texture & composition; the later ones with their implicit social commentaries.

When we say that a picture is worth a thousand words, we're not kidding! Each & every photograph, even those that I couldn't make head nor tail, tell stories of our predecessors' lives & times, letting social history unravel before our eyes.

BYSTANDER is for everyone who loves to look at the past - the everyday, angular, shadow & light city past, through the window of a camera.

4 out of 5 stars well done..........2002-04-16

first off, the authors do a fine job presenting to the reader an insightful history of street photography. they especially succeeded in explaining (or at least theorizing) how the various photographers came to create their respective photographic styles by finding sources of influence in modern art, architecture, and of course each other.
although there are other reviewers who believe the authors didn't give enough credit to hcb for shaping street photography into what it is today, it is important to note that even in the chapters which focus on the american photographers hcb is continuously cited as a major influence. just remember that this book is a history of street photography, not a bio of hcb!
i also agree with the reviewer who thought the photo placement within the book was a little inconvenient at times. but that minor problem does in no way detract from the overall value of such an insightful look at the history of street photography. enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Misguided.......2001-09-09

History of Street Photography! - I grabbed the book. Sat down. leafed through, then stopped, read one chapter in full. And put it down in disgust. "History" implies a systematic approach, a viewpoint as well as recounting of names and facts, it implies ANALYSIS. And the latter the authors are simply not qualified to provide. Of the many paragraphs describing images of Henri Cartier-Bresson here is what sticks in mind: they are "weird", grey, somehow "wrong". By the end of the essay on HBC we find out that "at one time he was the most famous photographer in the world" (citing from memory) - and the major reason why the world decided so is missing - the authors neither understood themselves, nor were qualified to pick up the right explanation from the published criticism: HCB (which he confirmed nimself) applied knowledge of painting to photographic "instant compositions". His images are artist's sketches from life and have to be analyzed as such if they are to be understood at all.
Instead of analysis and examples of correct reading/interpretation of included photos the authors fill space with anecdotes: some American writer accompanying HCB was so much irritated by the latter that he felt like pushing him under the wheels of a truck.
The history of street photography according to the book is such: XIX century, HCB and Europeans, and two larger chapters on Americans, in toto exceeding the first half of the book. Obviously, the centre of all interesting developments is the USA, the rest of the world does not count. In the end we are supplied with another empty and voluble script of a conversation between the authors expostulating Winogrand (on the lines of "do you think that where HCB would stop, HW would push it harder - yeah!")
My conclusion: if you want to understand street photography as an artistic development, turn to other books, such as the excellent "Henri Cartier-Bresson and the Artless Art" by Jean-Pierre Montier (ISBN 0821222856).

Redheads, by Meyerowitz, is a tasteful gallery of full-color photos. It includes both sexes, as well as all body types and ages (and all shades of red). There is no text; the focus instead is on the subjects, who show remarkable variety of expression and posture. One of the few complaints I have with the book is the limited photojournalism; nearly all of the photos are composed the same, with the subject(s) centered and posed looking at the camera. Overall, the book is fairly good, and very good if you prefer redheads.

    Book Description

Originally published in 1979, Cape Light became an instant classic and one of the most influential photography books published in the latter part of the 20th century. Common scenestiny figures on a beach, a porch railing against a storm-darkened sky, a blue raft against a summer cottageall are transformed by the poignant light of the Cape and the photographers subtle and luminous vision. This exquisitely printed book captures every nuance of color and light in that unique juncture of sky, sea, and land that is Cape Cod.

I love the pictures of my old haunt. Ptown has some of the worlds most beautiful light.

5 out of 5 stars this is it!.......2003-01-09

I first saw this book while i was looking through the photography section at the University of Guelph library. This book probably influenced my photography more than any other. Unfortunately, it also made me start doing shots with my nikon that are better suited for a large format system. The introductory interview with the photographer is possibly the most interesting discussion on the topic of light and photography. If you plan to become anything more than an amature photographer, PLEASE get this book NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Takes your photographic breath away.......2002-03-04

Ansel Adams said that this book was his favorite book of color photographs (the reason I bought it, long ago). Meyerowitz's use of little contrast, incomparible colors, and unusual subject matter makes this a must MEMORIZE book for all serious photographers. If you don't go nuts over his photographs, you don't like photography as much as you thought you did.......

      Book Description

Hours after two airplanes hit the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001, Charlie Vitchers, a construction superintendent, and Bobby Gray, a crane operator, headed downtown. They knew their skills would be crucial amid the chaos and destruction after the towers fell.

What they could not imagine -- and what they would soon discover -- was the enormity of the task at Ground Zero. Four hundred million pounds of steel; 600,000 square feet of broken glass; and 2,700 vertical feet of building had been reduced to a pile of burning debris covering sixteen acres. Charlie, Bobby, and hundreds of other construction workers, many of whom had helped to build the Twin Towers, were the only ones qualified to safely handle the devastation.

Everyone working the site faced the looming danger of the collapse of the slurry wall protecting lower Manhattan from the waters of the Hudson River, the complexity of shifting tons of steel without losing additional lives, and the day-to-day challenge and emotional strain of recovering victims. Charlie Vitchers became the go-to guy for the hundreds of people and numerous agencies laboring to clean up Ground Zero. What he and Bobby Gray make dramatically evident is how the job of dismantling the remaining ruins and restoring order to the site was far more complex and dangerous than constructing the tallest buildings in the world.

With stunning full-color photographs donated by Joel Meyerowitz -- a celebrated and award-winning artist and the only non-newsroom photographer allowed access to the site -- and first-person oral accounts of the tragedy from the morning of the attack to the Last Column ceremony, Nine Months at Ground Zero is a harrowing but ultimately redemptive story of forthright and heroic service.

For all the crowds who were compelled to come to Ground Zero in those first traumatic months to see for themselves, pay their respects or simply offer moral support, most did not get close enough to see what these men and women who worked "The Pile" saw. Their lives will never be the same. Dedicated first and foremost to bringing home the victims, cutting a giant tangle of twisted steel and pushing compressed concrete--1.8 million tons of "debris"--the ironworkers, heavy equipment operators and other tradesmen who worked the site were heroic in their selfless determination to work fast and see the job through to the end. Reporters were not allowed inside and workers who talked to them could be fired. Unprepared for the horror they would see but pushing through, day after day to get the job done, these men and women came together in an unspoken bond which could not be breached, even by members of their own family. This is a story everyone should know. God bless them all.

5 out of 5 stars We owe a debt of gratitude.......2006-05-31

The "outside world" owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who worked hard to respectfully recover those who were killed on 9/11.
This book goes a long way to bring those of use who observed from afar closer to what happened in the aftermath.
The courage to step up and the morality to do what is right is imbedded in these individuals.
      Thank you.

      5 out of 5 stars 9/11 HEROS & ANGELS.......2006-05-26

This book is a terrific account of the story of the recovery from the Pile to the Pit at the WTC Site. In contrast with the twisted and bitter 'American Ground' written by William Langewiesche some years ago, 'Nine Months's firsthand hand accounts from the rank and file men and women from the FDNY, NYPD and Constuction Trade show the human efforts and bursting hearts that forged those involved in the recovery into a band of brothers. Their desperate efforts and hopes again inspire us through this account.

It was worth waiting for until now to hear their stories in their own words and much applause to Glenn Stout, Charlie Vitchers and Robert Gray for putting this together for the rest of us. No one should miss it.

5 out of 5 stars For All Those Construction Workers Who Were "In The Pit".......2006-04-25

Thank you Bobby, for imortalizing the experience, and heartache, of us all.

      5 out of 5 stars Unsung Heros.......2006-04-25

Wonderful book that captures what really went on to clear out Ground Zero and how recoveries were handled.. Charlie Vitchers is an amazing man and is so modest for all that he accomplished. He brought compassion to recovery. Without his direction and authority recovery and clear up would have been chaotic. I highly recommend this book if you want to know what really happened at Ground Zero on Sept 11, 2001

My grandfather, a Bostonian, purchased a home on Cape Cod, berore 1910. About five generations of his progeny have enjoyed The Cape since that time. A part of most of my summers - since 1935 - have been spent on the Cape. Mr. Meyerowitz's photographic essay truly captures the essence of The Cape. The beach, the redheads, the old home scenes all strike a chord of memories. I recommend it to all Cape Codders, wash-ashores, and prospective visitors.

Lovely lights and colors I found invading silently into my heart while I turn on a photographer's book.
Have ever seen the book 'Bay/Sky' ? - Maybe/Surely that would be another expression of 'Do you know what photographic ecstacy is ? '.
Joel Meyerowitz reveals off a tremendous tales from the Nature with none of words ; Only with Lights. Colors, Darkness, Mists, Waters, Clouds, Sky ... . More over it, ultimately What a living on Earth is all about ... .

After anyone whoever see this book, then he/she should ask to others - Have you ever seen the book Bay/Sky ?

Joel Meyerowitz's lightworks are in silence, yet it's echos are standing as perpetual existence !

A MUST-SEE photographic masterpiece it is.

      Book Description

Joel Meyrowitz is one of the world's best-known and best-selling photographers; his Cape Light has become a color photography classic with 100,000 copies sold.

The Tuscan countryside is among the most well-loved on earth, for its beauty, its natural bounty, its magnificent light. Award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz and novelist/playwright Maggie Barrett have combined talents to create a loving and personal portrait of Tuscany through the seasons. Meyerowitz provides the breathtaking images; Maggie Barrett offers poetic, evocative commentary that pays loving tribute to this alluring rural world. They take you inside everyday Tuscan life and landscape, and also capture the warmth of the people who live there and their profound connection to the land.

Joel Meyerowitz, who has published 14 books, is a Guggenheim fellow and an NEA and an NEH award-winner. His photographs have shown in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art. He was the only photographer granted access to Ground Zero, where he persistently captured both the devastation and the dedication of the many workers who toiled at the World Trade Center site.

Maggie Barrett is the author of three novels and a collection of short stories. Her play, Give it Up, was performed off Broadway.

      5 out of 5 stars From a Different Stance.......2006-11-15

There have been a surprising number of negative opinions about this view of Tuscany, comments that may make the potential buyer avoid the book. This reader found something different here, something unique to this volume and view of an area of the world that seems to have become everybody's dream location.

First, the book is soft hued. Joel Meyerowitz is an accomplished photographer who is able to photograph just about any subject and make it more sensitive. Here he walks us through Tuscany along with writer Maggie Barrett during the various seasons of the year. No, there are no color-saturated view of sunflower fields, vineyards, or the glowing sunlight that permeates the summers of Tuscany. Instead we begin with Winter and proceed through Spring, Summer, and Autumn and are given the quality of light that changes with the seasons as much as the crops and produce and landscapes do. The result is a romantic, poetic, fine marriage of image and word that allows us to let the mystery of the countryside and its inhabitants and treasures subtlely come to life.

This is not a book for those eager to find the best travel locales or for those who want some visual information for making paintings. This instead is a book of dreamy visions, images altered by light as seen through different hours and seasons. This is a poet's collection. Grady Harp, November 06

1 out of 5 stars Tuscany:Inside the Light by Joel Meyerowitz.......2006-01-16

I ordered this book, expecting something entirely different. I am extremely disappointed and I am sorry I spent the money for it. I expected to see more street scenes and tips to help you paint the "old Tuscany" style. There are only landscape scenes, and nothing like I would like to paint! Nothing there looks like what I think Tuscany style is!

5 out of 5 stars Pure and unfiltered.......2004-09-08

This is not a book about Tuscany as a series of pretty pictorial pictures, instead this is a book about looking and seeing a landscape transformed, shaped almost by a particular light, brilliantly sunny or gloomily misty.
There is a pure humbling feel to this body of work, whose subject Joel Meyerowitz has not re created in any grand graphic sense but simply drawn our attention to. Joel has created such a sense of place that one feels transported to the 'real' Tuscany, but we in turn are asked to look and consider our own surroundings and lives. What is and what could be.
      A brilliant book.

      2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING!!.......2004-01-17

I was expecting so much, and received so little! Don't be fooled by the beautiful cover! All the pictures seemed similar in washed out colors and shape, as if the photographer never left one area of Tuscany. He captured very few of it's many facets. Out of the 79 photographs, there was only about 15 that did anything for me. And there was not ONE photograph of the fields of sunflowers that Tuscany is famous for. Only a picture of dead ones in winter!
Tuscany is breathtakingly gorgeous, and vast, with so much character! Very little of that is captured in this book. It didn't do Tuscany the justice it deserves!

2 out of 5 stars Tuscany Inside the Light.......2004-01-16

If you are familiar with Meyerowitz's gorgeous book "Cape Light" you will be disappointed in Tuscany. The Cape Cod book was published by the Boston Musuem of Fine Arts and contained wonderful color saturated plates. Tuscany, on the other hand, looks like an amateur effort. The skies are washed out, there is little definition in much of the landscape photos and it is simply mediocre and uninspiring. I am assuming this is the fault of the publisher since Meyerowitz is, in my opinion, a first rate color photographer.
