It's difficult to imagine a harder first act to follow than The Kite Runner: a debut novel by an unknown writer about a country many readers knew little about that has gone on to have over four million copies in print worldwide. But when preview copies of Khaled Hosseini's second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, started circulating at Amazon.com, readers reacted with a unanimous enthusiasm that few of us could remember seeing before. As special as The Kite Runner was, those readers said, A Thousand Splendid Suns is more so, bringing Hosseini's compassionate storytelling and his sense of personal and national tragedy to a tale of two women that is weighted equally with despair and grave hope.

We wanted to spread the word on the book as widely, and as soon, as we could. See below for an exclusive excerpt from A Thousand Splendid Suns and early reviews of the book from some of our top customer reviewers.--The Editors

It's not the opening scene, but rather one from a crucial moment later in the book when Mariam, one of the novel's two main characters, steps into a new role.

Early Buzz from Amazon.com Top Reviewers

We queried our top 100 customer reviewers as of March 6, 2007, and asked them to read A Thousand Splendid Suns and share their thoughts. We've included these early reviews below in the order they were received. For the sake of space, we've only included a brief excerpt of each reviewer's response, but each review is available for reading in its entirety by clicking the "Read the review" link.

Joanna Daneman: "His style is deceptively simple and clear, the characters drawn deftly and swiftly, his themes elemental and huge. This is a brilliant writer and I look forward to more of his work." Read Joanna Daneman's review

Seth J. Frantzman: "Khaled Hosseini has done it again with 'A Thousand Splendid Sons', presenting a new, dashing and dark tale of two generations of women trapped in a loveless marriage, bracketed by great events." Read Seth J. Frantzman's review

Donald Mitchell: "Khaled Hosseini has succeeded in capturing many important historical and contemporary themes in a way that will make your heart ache again and again. Why will your reaction be so strong? It's because you'll identify closely with the suffering of almost all the characters, a reaction that's very rare to a modern novel." Read Donald Mitchell's review

Lawrance M. Bernabo: "All things considered, following up on a successful first novel is probably harder than coming up with the original effort and Hosseini could have rested on his laurels in the manner of Harper Lee, but as "A Thousand Splendid Suns" amply proves, this native of Kabul has more stories to tell about the land of Afghanistan." Read Lawrance M. Bernabo's review

Amanda Richards: "There are parts of this book that will have grown men surreptitiously blotting the tears that are on the verge of overflowing their ducts, and by the time you get to the middle, you won't be able to put it down. Hosseini's simple but richly descriptive prose makes for an engrossing read, and in my opinion, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is among the best I have ever read. This is definitely not one to be missed." Read Amanda Richards's review

N. Durham: "All that being said, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is a bit more enjoyable than Hosseini's previous "The Kite Runner", and once again he manages to give we readers another glimpse of a world that we know little about but frequently condemn and discard. However, if you were one of the many that for some reason absolutely loved "The Kite Runner", chances are that you'll love this as well." Read N. Durham's review

John Kwok: "Khaled Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is a genuine instant literary classic, and one destined to be remembered as one of 2007's best novels. It should be compared favorably to such legendary Russian novels like "War and Peace" and "Doctor Zhivago"." Read John Kwok's review

Thomas Duff: "Normally I'm more of an action-adventure type reader when it comes to novels and recreational reading. But I was given the chance to read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (author of The Kite Runner), so I decided to try something out of my normal genre. I am *so* glad I did. This is a stunning and moving novel of life and love in Afghanistan over a 30 year period." Read Thomas Duff's review

Charles Ashbacher: "This book manages to simultaneously capture the history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years and how women are treated in conservative Islamic societies.... In many ways it is a sad book, your heart goes out to these two women in their hopeless struggle to have a decent life with a brutal man in an unforgiving, intolerant society." Read Charles Ashbacher's review

W. Boudville: "Hosseini presents a piognant view into the recent tortured decades of the Afghan experience. From the 1970s, under a king, to the Soviet takeover, to the years of resistance. And then the rise and fall of the Taliban. An American reader will recognise many of the main political events. But to many Americans, Afghanistan and its peoples and religion remain an opaque and troubling mystery." Read W. Boudville's review

Mark Baker: "I tend to read plot heavy books, so this character study was a definite change of pace for me. I found the first half slow going at times, mainly because I knew where the story was going. Once I got into the second half, things really picked up. The ending was very bittersweet. I couldn't think of a better way to end it." Read Mark Baker's review

Grady Harp: "Hosseini takes us behind those walls for forty some years of Afghanistan's bloody history and while he does not spare us any of the descriptions of the terror that continues to besiege that country, he does offer us a story that speaks so tenderly about the fragile beauty of love and devotion and lasting impression people make on people." Read Grady Harp's review

Robert P. Beveridge: "When I was actively reading it, the pages kept turning, and more than once I found myself foregoing food or sleep temporarily to get in just one more chapter. When I had put it down, however, I felt no particular compulsion to pick it back up again. It's a good book, and a relatively well-written one, but it's not a great book. Enjoyable without leaving a lasting impression." Read Robert P. Beveridge's review

B. Marold: "While the events in Afghanistan and the wider world create a familiar framework for the stories of these two women, it is nothing more than a framework. The warp and weft of everyday life, and the interaction of the two women and their close relatives is the heartbeat of the story." Read B. Marold's review

Daniel Jolley: "Khaled Hosseini has written a majestic, sweeping, emotionally powerful story that provides the reader with a most telling window into Afghan society over the past thirty-odd years. It's also a moving story of friendship and sacrifice, giving Western readers a rare glimpse into the suffering and mistreatment of Afghan women that began long before the Taliban came to power." Read Daniel Jolley's review

Book Description

After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-10-04

I decided to read this book because I read "The Kite Runner" which I liked a lot. I saw that Khaled Hosseini had written another book which was on the Bestseller's list so I got it. I loved it from the very first page to the last word. It was one of the best books I've ever read and was extremely powerful. Everybody needs to read this!

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2007-10-04

I enjoyed this, just not as much as I thought I would. I prefer the author's first book.

If you're a die hard fan of the author it's worth checking out. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good, just paled in comparison to the first.

2 out of 5 stars A best seller? Really?.......2007-10-03

Not sure why this is a best seller. I was a little disappointed with this book. I bought it after reading all the reviews but it was a sure let down. I gave fiction a try after a while...maybe thats why? The story however sad and close to truth is very common. I have read plenty of blogs and newspaper articles with similar story line. Why the special treatment for this book?

Readers beware. The brilliant, breathtaking conclusion to J.K. Rowling's spellbinding series is not for the faint of heart--such revelations, battles, and betrayals await in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that no fan will make it to the end unscathed. Luckily, Rowling has prepped loyal readers for the end of her series by doling out increasingly dark and dangerous tales of magic and mystery, shot through with lessons about honor and contempt, love and loss, and right and wrong. Fear not, you will find no spoilers in our review--to tell the plot would ruin the journey, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an odyssey the likes of which Rowling's fans have not yet seen, and are not likely to forget. But we would be remiss if we did not offer one small suggestion before you embark on your final adventure with Harry--bring plenty of tissues.

The heart of Book 7 is a hero's mission--not just in Harry's quest for the Horcruxes, but in his journey from boy to man--and Harry faces more danger than that found in all six books combined, from the direct threat of the Death Eaters and you-know-who, to the subtle perils of losing faith in himself. Attentive readers would do well to remember Dumbledore's warning about making the choice between "what is right and what is easy," and know that Rowling applies the same difficult principle to the conclusion of her series. While fans will find the answers to hotly speculated questions about Dumbledore, Snape, and you-know-who, it is a testament to Rowling's skill as a storyteller that even the most astute and careful reader will be taken by surprise.

A spectacular finish to a phenomenal series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bittersweet read for fans. The journey is hard, filled with events both tragic and triumphant, the battlefield littered with the bodies of the dearest and despised, but the final chapter is as brilliant and blinding as a phoenix's flame, and fans and skeptics alike will emerge from the confines of the story with full but heavy hearts, giddy and grateful for the experience. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition." Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur's answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling's most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley's Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I'm sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gets better every time but there should be sequels and prequels!.......2007-10-04

I'm quite certain that thousands of people have already reviewed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It was really funny to see people reviewing this alleged final installment in the Harry Potter saga before the book even came out. But after reading it through a few times and listening to it on audioBook CDS as narrated by Jim Dale (FIVE STAR PRODUCTION!), I thought I might throw in my two cents worth.

Each time I have read the book or listened to it narrated, I have found more depth and deeper layers than I had discovered in the previous go around. (It also compelled me to re-read or listen to the other six books!) I originally was skeptical that J.K. Rowling really had a set plot line for all seven books or that Harry Potter popped into her head fully formed as she has claimed when the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone came out but I can see now that she definitely had a main plot line right from the beginning (even if she made minor changes along the way in sub-plots and such). I only deeply regret that she didn't emphasize Wand Lore more in the first six books as well as why Albania was important to Voldemort. I found the Wand Lore absolutely fascinating and regretted that she didn't explore this more throughout the series as the concept of a wizard or witch's wand becoming something more than just a way to perform spells but rather a friend who makes the journey together in the life magical. The way she had Ollivander speak of wands in the first book and the last book make me wish she had created a "Wand Lore Class" at Hogwarts. Harry would have been much more prepared for what was to come if he had taken such a class.

Though I loved the book as a whole, I personally found the epilogue weak and very poorly detailed, leading me to believe that J.K. Rowling is most likely going to write sequels of Harry Potter in his adult years and hopefully well-written prequels. For instance, here are just a few things that I, as an avid Harry Potter fan would like to have seen answered in the epilogue: What happened during those nineteen years between him facing Voldemort in their duel inside the walls of Hogwarts and the Potter family showing up to see their children off to school on the Hogwarts' Express? Where are they living? If Number 12 Grimmauld Place, how do they keep Mrs. Black quiet? What is Harry doing for a living? We know Neville is a teacher at Hogwarts but not a peep or hint as to the principle characters except that Ron has learned how to drive, leading me (us?) to believe they are not living in a Wizarding community such as Godric's Hollow. What is Hermione and Ginny doing? I really thought Hermione would become a professor but nothing is mentioned. Is Harry an Auror or did he perhaps follow in Ollivander's footsteps? Why should Draco Malfoy be allowed freedom? What happened to Luna? What happened to his cousin Dudley? Perhaps he'd end up marrying a witch? Wouldn't Aunt Petunia LOVE that? LOL.

So those are my objections to the epilogue and some of the reasons why I feel the series will continue. I would buy the books! But the epilogue notwithstanding, I found Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to be a riveting book filled with grand images, contemporary issues that we muggles have to deal with, a range of characters and plot twists that can entertain adults such as myself, teenagers (Chapter one really isn't for kids in my opinion) as well as senior citizens such as some of my family who read the book at the same time I did when it was released. Moreover, I genuinely felt at though J.K. Rowling truly came into her own in this book as an author and it would be a shame to see her not continue entertaining us with stories of the witches and wizards of Britain!

If you haven't yet read "Year Seven" in the Harry Potter saga, I have tried hard not to spoil the ending. (I hope I have succeeded.) Though I was thoroughly well-versed in the Harry Potter universe in preparation for The Deathly Hallows, many of the things that happened took me by surprise. I believe you will thoroughly enjoy the book. As an aside, I personally recommend the Deluxe Edition though it is a little more spendy. It's a legacy item that if kept in good condition is surely going to be worth something far more than what you originally paid for it. My questions regarding the epilogue undoubtedly give away certain things but enjoy the book, regardless of the epilogue. I genuinely hope that J.K. Rowling will give her fans more of the magical world of Harry Potter and his friends. There are definitely dark wizards that weren't dealt with and The Deathly Hallows themselves are now in play for some future "next gen" Voldemort to try to claim for him or herself. In short, J.K. Rowling has left the Quidditch field wide open and in my opinion, the Golden Snitch hasn't been caught yet. She should give her fans some true closure and/or allow other authors to pick up where she has left off.

So I commend this book to you as you journey into Harry's seventh year of magical education even if he barely spends any time at Hogwarts during that year. We can hope to hear about Dumbledore, James and Lily and even Severus Snape in prequels. And there is so much material for sequels into Harry Potter's future. But regardless, if Ms. Rowling chooses not to satisfy our curiousity, we can always imagine what the future holds for the characters based upon what she has written. Enjoy and prepare to be shocked, disturbed, tantalized, confunded, stupefied and even surprised!

5 out of 5 stars The Incomparable Jim Dale.......2007-10-03

Even though I ordered 3 copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" I was the last in my family to get ahold of the book. I wanted undisturbed reading time and that is a rare commodity. I rushed through the book since I needed to know what happened and missed many of the details in my hurry to finish. I was able to really enjoy the subtleties driving in my car and listening to Jim Dale read the book to me. My inner voice is not nearly as rich as Mr. Dale's and I was enchanted with his reading of the story. I found myself sitting longer than need be in parking lots and in my driveway waiting for a chapter to end. To term Mr. Dale versatile doesn't do justice to the variety of voices he produces. Each character came alive and I found myself even more attached or repelled by many of them after hearing the cd. Can't believe the saga is at an end.

5 out of 5 stars harry potter.......2007-10-03

It is a gift for my grandson and it looks fine. I had a hard time finding it anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter Book 7.......2007-10-03

An exciting conclusion to the Harry Potter series. I recommend this and each of the books in the series to readers of all ages.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE - contains 2006 PDR on CD, NOT 2007 PDR CD.......2007-09-11

This was published before the 2007 PDR on CD was available. If you want the more up-to-date 2007 PDR on CD, instead get the PDR Electronic Library 2007 on CD. Amazon has it for $59.99 which is 40% off listed price! The 2007 PDR Electronic Library has the full 2007 PDR + PDR Nonprescription Drugs/Dietary Supplements + PDR Ophthalmic Medicines + PDR Drug Interactions/Side Effects all fully integrated on one CD. So it is much more up-to-date and much more comprehensive and much more portable!

5 out of 5 stars 2007 Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) Review.......2007-06-08

I purchased the 2007 Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) as a Mother's Day 2007 gift for my Mom. My Mom is a nurse, and she has been a nurse for almost 55 years now. She is 71. Mom had not had an updated PDR in close to 10 years, so I got her a new one.

5 out of 5 stars Medical Treasure!.......2007-05-09

This book is absolutely essential if you want to keep up with the newest in medicines, diseases, cures, and much more! It is the same book you see on your physicians desk and the same one I have saw my physician flip through when he needs to look something up!
Don't miss your opportunity to own a copy because you will not be sorry!
P.S. Ideal for nurses, CNA'S, physicians assistants, and others in the medical field that wants to be updated regularly.

3 out of 5 stars Know What You Buy.......2007-02-13

The PDR is commonly thought to be a complete drug reference. While the strength of the PDR is that it includes complete FDA approved prescribing information for the drugs inside, the weakness is that the drugs it includes is not comprehensive. The publisher depends on drug manufacturers to provide the information that is included in each edition. For this reason, new drugs almost always are included; however, older drugs that are beyond their patent life may not be included.

Further, the PDR only includes FDA approved information. As any Physician, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or Pharmacist knows, off label drug use is common. If a medical professional is looking for a printed drug reference that is truly comprehensive, look for Drug Facts and Comparisons or AHFS Drug Information. If one is looking for a handbook, consider Lexi-Comp Drug Information, AHFS Essentials, or Drug Facts and Comparisons Pocket Edition.

4 out of 5 stars Information not disclosed to buyers!.......2007-01-21

As usual, the 2007 PDR was what I expected. Very comprehensive.
The only thing I found a little misleading was the fact that the advertised edition of the PDR on-disc (CD), that was was included with the 2007 PDR, was a 2006 edition and it's use expires part way through 2008. Most buyers would probably assume that the "PDR on disc" offerd would be the 2007 edition on CD. Also the fact that these software editions have "time-limited functionality" should also be mentioned. I believe that this information would influence a buyers decision to purchase the product. I attempted to check and see if this information was currently available on the Amazon site but this purchase option is not longer offered.

5 out of 5 stars Great asset for POD authors.......2007-09-23

When I purchased this book, I was really quite skeptical. I figured that it was just a promotion of Amazon.com and not really any useful advice.

Then my wife and I published our first children's book, Santa and Sam's Big Secret through Outskirts Press. Although OP did a wonderful job of publishing the book, the major portion of publicity for the book was left up to us. We have been following some of the advice offered by Brent Sampson and we do believe that it is helping with the promotion of our book.

Sell Your Book on Amazon is an easy read. You can easily skip over chapters that you do not feel interest you, and still come up with many ideas that will help you to promote your book.

I would recommend this book to any authors who are using a Publish On Demand publisher. It will surely enhance the sales of your book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to sell books too!.......2007-09-12

I wrote a book called, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." It took three years to write. I spent another year sending it to publishers before I finally found a small publisher willing to work with me.

The Great Day came. I held my baby in my hands. I knew the world would proclaim her beauty. I was wrong, very wrong. A few friends and friends of friends bought the book. I was stunned and hurt too. But I kept trying to market my book the old fashioned way. I contacted the major book chains. To them I did not exist. I sent over 100 books to bookstores, and I never got a single order. I sent about 100 books to major newspapers, and I never got a single review.

One local bookstore, New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon was very helpful. But the support of one local bookstore was not enough. I was almost ready to give up, but instead I went to Amazon and joined the Amazon Advantage program. I sold perhaps 20 books. Victory at last! Amazon loved me and I loved Amazon! And then I did not sell another book on Amazon for about a month.

I was ready to give up. But I knew my book could help readers feel better about themselves. I had received dozens of touching letters that left me feeling happy that something I had done made a difference in the world. Besides, I needed the money. Family illnesses had depleted my bank account and my debt was mounting. So, instead of quitting, I did an Amazon search for books on marketing books, and I found, "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon," by Brent Sampson.

I wish I had found this book a year ago. If you have a book you are trying to sell, or if you want to write a book, buy this book. Unless you are that rare writer who pens a bestseller, you will find yourself alone in a big jungle. Amazon gives you a path out of the jungle, and Brent Sampson's book is the guide.

Honestly, I have just started implementing his suggestions. So I have lots of work to do. After I finish this review, I will ask him to be my Amazon friend. I might ask him to review "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." He said to mention my book as often as possible without being obnoxious. And finally, he said Amazon friends are important. You see, if you become my friend, whenever anyone goes to your Amazon profile and clicks on my picture in your Friends section, there's a chance I will sell a book. And if someone clicks on your picture in my Friends section, you might sell a book. So, do you want to be my friend? Good heavens, I feel like a little kid again.

I will make a deal with you. In a year, I will write another review of "Sell Your Book on Amazon" and let you know how I am doing. Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

5 out of 5 stars Every author's dream book about Amazon.......2007-09-09

Reviewed by Tyler R. Tichelaar for Reader Views (9/07)

Brent Sampson's "Sell Your Book on Amazon" is the book I have been waiting for so I can understand how Amazon ranks my books and how I can better promote my books on Amazon. As an author myself, my books have been listed on Amazon, but I had no idea I had any control over how popular they could become.

While I had already been doing a couple things Brent Sampson suggests, primarily writing book reviews, I learned there is a great deal more I can and should do. Brent Sampson takes us step-by-step through the jungle of Amazon. He explains to us about creating an Amazon-Connect account, which includes a profile to show up on your book-detail pages. He explains in detail all the aspects of the Book-Detail page for a book. And he provides instructions for all those features on Amazon such as writing book reviews, participating in listmania, creating tags, and "So You'd Like To" guides. Throughout the book, he gives excellent advice. Not being the most computer-savvy individual, I never would have figured out on my own the many features he discusses. I guarantee "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon" will sit by my computer for a long time and be frequently referred to as I learn to use Amazon to my advantage.

My greatest revelation from reading "Sell Your Book on Amazon" is that Amazon is not only a bookstore but a networking site for authors. I have already been promoting my book at other sites like Myspace, Facebook and Shelfari, but I now realize Amazon is a fantastic networking site to meet readers, and to group and associate my book with other similar and more popular books in my subject area. I am guessing it is far more effective and lucrative than those other sites as well.

I would say "Sell Your Book on Amazon" is 95% user-friendly. I actually sat at my computer and followed the steps on Amazon as I read the book, so although the book is only 164-pages long, it took me a good week to read through it, spending a few hours each night working on my author profile and creating tags and lists on Amazon. I did get a bit confused at times, but I think that's because Amazon may have changed the placement of a few things on its website. I hope Mr. Sampson is diligent about keeping the book updated because I think it is already a bit out-of-date in one or two places because of Amazon's website changes. The only addition I wish the book had was a chart listing all the different addresses for Amazon programs--Amazon-connect, a seller-account (part of Amazon-connect), an associates account, and the different email addresses to contact Amazon depending on the section you need help with. My head rather swam as I grew to realize you don't just have one Amazon account, but probably several different ones depending on whether you're selling or directing traffic from your website to Amazon, or simply purchasing from Amazon. I did greatly appreciate the several pages in the back of the book designated for notes. I now have several pages of notes for quick reference when I need to perform a task on Amazon.

Brent Sampson also recommends authors tell people to go to Amazon and write 5 star reviews for their books. He even asks the reader to write a five star review for "Sell Your Book on Amazon." I am happy to comply with his request, and at the same time, follow his advice that I sign my review with a plug for my own book.

- Tyler R. Tichelaar, author of "Iron Pioneers" available on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars A useful book.......2007-09-06

In a nutshell, this book has some invaluable information for anyone who wants to sell books as a self-published author. For me, even with all the research I have already done, it was a mini-education. I paired it with Sell Your Book on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!! This one is the best out there.......2005-11-24

you can skip to any chapter and read that topic without having to read the first chapters. Go to what you inquire and the author will present it as standalone material. THis is like the bible of Magazine How-to books...

2 out of 5 stars A Tough Read.......2005-09-05

I found How to Start a Magazine by James Kobak difficult to read and somewhat depressing. The promises on the cover, in my humble opinion, we never fulfilled and the textbook-style format was flat. I felt as if, rather than a telling me "how to" he was telling me all the reasons "not to." He also came from only one perspective--that of a large scale, national publication. My goal is to build a local business-builder magazine. Therefore, much of the information was irrelevant for me. Based on the cover promises, I thought I'd found the ideal book for my needs. It didn't deliver.

4 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2004-06-02

So you want to start a magazine? It won't be easy..it won't be fast--and it definitely won't be cheap!

Author James Kobak took up the unthankful task of trying to write a user-friendly guide to a profession that many magazine publishers study for four years or more at a university or college.

For the most part, Kobak does a pretty good job. He is obviously enthusiastic about the subject. He has been direct witness to the start-up and/or purchase of many magazines. So he knows his subject.

The reader faces one big challenge. Reading this book is like scraping the top off a mountain. Once the reader moves past the initial "you can do it" enthusiasm of the first few chapters, s/he is immediately faced with the immensity of the task that starting a magazine may present. By the time Kobak closes up his last few chapters with the drudgery of statistics, bookkeeping and forecasting, the shackles of optimism will have rolled away from the reader's demeanor and the reality of his/her endeavor will stare him/her boldy in the face.

There is so much information crammed into the 300-some pages of this book that I ran my highlighter dry trying to capture it all. Kobak writes in an unintimidating style for those new to publishing. That said, however, the information is sometimes muddled by sloppy editing and the author's occasional lapses of clarity in his writing.

For its wealth of information alone, this is a must read for anyone who plans on starting a publishing venture without going the college route. Kobak eplains very clearly that starting a magazine is not inexpensive. Perhaps that is why he priced his book so reasonably. So that we readers could learn that fact first.

4 out of 5 stars A relief..........2004-01-23

Every single book that I'd ever picked up about the magazine business was pretty cut-n-dry and hard to understand (vocabulary wise) with entirely too many numbers that made me go "???" But this book was conversational and informative. I found out some things that I didn't know about from the magazine I was writing for. It's a great way to learn about the magazine business if you're starting it on your own or just to understand the behind-the-scenes of what the owners do. He lost me in the end with the numbers but I still enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Experienced Publishers Too...........2003-12-14

How to Start a Magazine is a must read for anyone thinking about starting a magazine, and anyone currently in the business. While the book targets the wanna-be publisher, it is also one of the best books I have read for experienced magazine professionals too. Kobak masterfully describes all of the key competencies of magazine publishing in a straight forward no nonsense manner. Unlike many texts on this subject, this book is full of practical real-life examples of what to do, and what watch out for. The author also does an excellent job of exploring how to expand the business of established magazines into international markets, book publishing, list rentals and custom publishing. This book is well worth your time and money.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a shepherd looks a psalm 23.......2007-10-03

This is such a beautiful book. It gave me a whole new outlook about my relationship with Jesus, my shepherd. We even used this book for a series of teachings at our morning ladies meetings at church. I did not know all the detailed things that a shepherd did for his sheep. And they shall know my voice. Gives me goose bumps !!!!! Thankyou.Lois I. Cazinha

5 out of 5 stars Comforting Read.......2007-08-24

This is a wonderful book of comfort..and excellent for gift giving. Psalm 23 will never be the same after reading this wonderful book by Phillip Keller. His books are touching, real, and applicable.

5 out of 5 stars Building the manager from the inside out.......2007-07-16

This book is a great short read with a long term affect. The information you can learn from this book can build you from the inside out. While looking at the basic understanding from the view of a shepherd (manager/supervisor/leader)you can also see what you desire as a sheep (follower/employee). Take this book and look beyond the expectations of straight out forwrard managment techniques. No it will not give you the ideal bulleted words you want. You actually have to use your thoughts and imigaination, out of the box thinking. Then God through his words of the Psalmist will allow you to explore the source, God, as you become the resource. This book will do nothing for you if you DO NOT act on it. "Action words without action are no action at all."

5 out of 5 stars Shepherd's Look at Psalm 23.......2007-05-15

I can't say enough great things about this great little book. It is full of Divine wisdom and insight as the writer compares us, "Saints of God" to literal "sheep". It is an amazing comparison and one can only truly understand Psalm 23 by reading this incredible book. I recommend it to all - I've bought it for several people. Great read!

4 out of 5 stars Good insight from a Shepherd..........2007-04-25

This book was written back in 1970 by author Phillip Keller. Mr. Keller is from East Africa as he was born to missionary parents. There he tended sheep as a shepherd and as his life went on, from what I understand, did many other things his in his life.

This book walked through Psalm 23, as the title purports, from the view of the shepherd which was very helpful. The one that really caught me off guard was the commentary on Psalm 23:5b which states, "You have anointed my head with oil." Keller gives insight that for the sheep, this is done to ward off the flies and insects that come and disrupt the sheep and can actually lie eggs in their nostrils and cause the sheep to bang their heads on trees (sometimes to the point of death) so that they can rid themselves of these larvae. This oil is carefully rubbed, by the shepherd, on the sheep's head and nose to make sure the sheep are not bothered by these insects. This parallel makes a lot more sense when thought of our Saviour anointed our head with oil to ward off the things of this world that can so consume us.
This is just one of the many insights given by a shepherd to this great Psalm that is known by so many Christians and non-Christians alike.

The only downfall to this book is that the author is not a scholar nor a theologian. So, when he starts to unravel some of the Psalm he uses other Scriptures out of place and also draws unbiblical examples with the sheep that fall short of sound doctrine. But don't let this draw you away from the book for the good far outweighs the bad, as the bad only came up three or four times to my recollection.

This book would be a good addition to any Christian who would like to glean more from such a popular text

This book starts from the beginning-- defining the Internet, the Web, browsers, and URLs -- so you don't need to have any previous knowledge about how the Web works. After reading this book, you'll have a solid foundation in HTML, graphics, and design principles that you can immediately put to use in creating effective web pages.

In the second edition, Jennifer has updated the book to cover style sheets and reflect current web standards. She has also added exercises that help you to learn various techniques and short quizzes that make sure you're up to speed with key concepts. The companion CD-ROM contains material for all the exercises in the book, as well as trial versions of Fireworks® MX, and HomeSite™ 5; Adobe ® Photoshop® 7, ImageReady® 7, and BBEdit 7.*

Learning Web Design, 2nd Edition: Unlike other beginner books, Learning Web Design leaves no holes in your education. It gives you everything you need to create basic web sites and will prepare you for more advanced web work. If you are interested in web design, this book is the place to start. After finishing it, you'll be ready for the author's bestselling companion reference, Web Design in a Nutshell.

5 out of 5 stars Be sure to get the 3rd Edition!.......2007-09-13

Hi. This is Jennifer Robbins, the author of Learning Web Design. If you are interested in this title, I highly recommend that you get the Third Edition which is now available. A LOT has changed in the way web sites are built since the second edition of the book was published, and I'd hate for anyone to be getting out-of-date information. Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-03-15

For those looking to start web design this is the book to get. It says illustrated but it should say illustrations on every page. Very very illustrated. One of my favorite things about this book is after every chapter(when HTML is disscused)it provides an appendix showing you the html tags you just learned. Useful as a reference. This book does not leave you hanging. It teaches you every thing you need to create and understand basic websites. About half the book introduces you to html tags and the other portion is about web graphics. Jenn's style of writting is not boring but is often humerous and cozy. I have created 4 websites after reading this book. Buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to get a website up and running.......2007-01-10

I needed to understand how domain names and webhosting worked, plus design, program, test, and implement a website quickly. This book was perfect -- extremely well-organized, with a good Table of Contents and index, excellent examples and helpful (but not overwhelming) reference tables. The book had sufficient detail that I could get graphics loaded and use some CSS to make my text look more professional. I launched a good-looking, no-frills site for a club without any fancy animation, and got it up and running in a less than a month of evenings and weekends. The demo software (BBEdit) was invaluable to getting me started. Good treatment as well of issues with .gif, .jpeg, and .png files, and I feel that I can still learn more from this text should I want to make the site more sophisticated. The discussion of tables was especially clear. I recommend this book for anyone, even if you've never designed your own site or written a lick of html. Those wanting to do online forms to allow users to submit data will need to learn Javascript.

5 out of 5 stars Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML.......2006-11-10

This is this first "How To" book I ever read cover to cover. It works. It is well written, and breaks concepts down without making you feel like a "dummy". It's perfect for a novice like me.

So many things that were a mystery to me were explained. I now can do rollover buttons, animations, add music, etc. But most important is the Web design concepts this book drives home. It teaches how to make a balanced, well structured, and most importantly, user friendly web page. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction.......2006-08-11

Although I have not plowed through this entire book yet, it is shaping up as one of the books I've been looking for to tie up all the different threads that now make up the task of creating a good website. I may never actually create my business website all on my own, but at least I will have familiarity with the various tools that are currently being used so I can intelligently discuss and understand what the professionals are recommending. One of the toughest parts of learning any new technology these days is the constant improvement and changes going on. It's impossible to guess what may become standard and what may be obsolete by the time I finish the book. Books like this at least give an average person like me a fighting chance to keep as current as possible without continuous formal education.

5 out of 5 stars Print T Shirts For Fun & Profit.......2007-09-06

A brilliant book with all the how-tos required by a budding home-business owner and it shows you how to easily print teeshirts for fun and profit just like the title promises.

Can't recommend this book highly enough.

3 out of 5 stars Its somewhat informative.......2007-04-29

This book has good information but I would try to find it used as it is a bit pricey. If you really want the information try to go to a local tradeshow. That seemed to help me more than the book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-03-10

this book really has it all. I bought this book after reading previous reviews and I was not disappointed. It takes you through all of the silkscreening approaches from begining to end. It also gives you loads of resources for shirts and supplies. It gives alot of advice from the business end as well. My book also came with a helpful DVD. Of all the books that i've seen for sale on this subject, I think this is probably your best choice.

4 out of 5 stars Good book Despite Scott Fresner.......2006-12-13

This is a good book despite Scott Fresner. I suggest that you don't buy anything else from him. He will sell you the moon if you let him.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2006-08-07

very thorough. has info on a variety of aspects of the t-shirt business. i am using it in stages as i start my own business. i highly recommend this as a nuts and bolts type book, no fluff.

    Book Description

This bilingual (English-Spanish) catalogue raisonna of Rufino Tumayo's prints will reproduce in color every print--including xylographies, lithographies, silkscreens, artist's books, and the late mixographies--ever made by the great Mexican artist. Tamayo made approximately 320 prints between 1925 and 1991. Many of them were made using different inks, and these ink colors are respected in the catalogue's printing; in several cases, the printing processes themselves will also be reproduced. Comprehensive and expert commentary is made on each print regarding print-run, workshop, and publisher. This project has taken the Tamayo Museum and Foundation in Mexico City almost ten years of research to complete.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-08-03

Not to take anything away from this book, but there aren't a lot of color schemes that I would personally use. Maybe a few here and there, but definitely not enough that I would purchase this one again if I had to. But it does assist you in kicking around some other ideas. Not a bad book, but not my favorite either.

    5 out of 5 stars color index.......2007-03-25

this is a must have book for any graphic designer / web designer!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2007-01-04

It's been helpfull, and explains little things that no one ever explained to me. Good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Yes there are flaws, but still well worth it.......2006-12-29

This book is a great resource for those who sometimes have trouble putting together a good color scheme (and who doesn't have those troubles from time to time?). It's true that the colors won't look exactly the same as they do in the book. But this is still a great source for inspiration when you're stuck. You can use the formulas in the book as a starting place, and tweak them as necessary to make them work for you. I keep this book at my desk, and I and others that I work with refer to it often.

4 out of 5 stars This is a creative tool. Don't use it as a Pantone Color Guide........2006-11-30

    Fun, inspiring, portable, informative, usefull.

With over 1000 color combos grouped into minimally-versatile-titled chapters, concise brainstorming and color usage tips scattered around, and some carefully thought-out touches, this book is meant as a friendly companion who provides fuel for creativity to color users of all types as they explore color combinations for their specific projects, and it proved quite usefull to my design work. The color combos picked show that the author is a keen observer of color trends, as most of them can be applied handsomely to real work.

Obviously targeted towards beginners, it can provide ideeas even to experienced professionals. This is a book that pays out handsomely the more you spend time with it, as it mysteriously manages to benefically influence the color-centers in your brain :)

The book's strong points easily outweight it's few flaws -- color formula inaccuracy (you'll never get the right hues on your screen, use your eyes instead), some "useless" color-combos (meaning I can't figure out ANY style of project where they could be reasonably used), and obsolete info regarding color usage on the web. Some more information on color-theory is also a thing to be desired. Yeah, and don't expect to color like Raphael, Bruegel or Miro :) - even if the samples are provided, they look nothing like the real thing.

Although I feel I somewhat outgrew it and don't use it as often as before, this is one of the books I carry with me everyday at work.
