This book is, in a word, ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!! SO BUY IT NOW!! It's written by a woman who obviously loves fellatio to the bottom of her soul, and who has developed superlative and awesome technique -- making her a true Grand Master of Fellatio!! Truly mind blowing techniques to add to your oral repretoire! In terms of substantive tips, it beats other books on this subject hands down. It is shorn of nonessential details and distills to essence the art of great fellatio -- and thus gets straight to the point. It makes us want to write a similar book on mind blowing cunnilingus -- so let's find a publisher.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Time.......2006-06-06

I found this read to be somewhat informative prose wise, entertaining & very informative visually. Ms Taylor does a great job of relaxing the reader, let's face it, many women find giving oral sex repulsive. I know because I do sexual counseling. Having said that, I found a lot of her info a tad boring or repetitive, probably because I have read "Blowing Him Away", "Going Down","The Ultimate Guide To Fellatio" etc. etc.
The fun title definitely caught my eye, & if you are a novice, married 20 years or just plain curious, this is a MUST read! Every woman having sex with a man should know this info & be comfortable performing fellatio, which can be VERY sexually exciting for women!
Yes ladies, you can get extremely aroused with the right mindset & knowledge. This is where I think Ms. Taylor's book has the most importance. She delves into:
1)mental preparation
2)making it fun ie; poprocks
3)giving some tasteful (no pun intended) photos on how to achieve it all, mentally & physically.
Women are, for the most part, taught, "only bad girls do that" or they hear how awful it is from their peers or sisters. We are given thousands of subliminal messages that sex is
a) dirty, especially penises (how many penises do you see in R rated movies?)
b) messy,
c) inconvenient, but most of all....
d) a natural thing. Therefore we don't feel it necessary to read a book on sex, I mean, It's "natural" right? GO READ THIS BOOK & learn about good sex. Let me end by adding, one of the later photos shows the woman lying down, head back & the penis entering from above (deep throating). This excellent technique originated from Linda Lovelace & no,not all women who go down, deep throat, you do what is comfortable but don't limit yourself either. Regarding swallowing...99% of the time he won't even know whether you did or didn't, he is too absorbed into the wonderful orgasm you have given him (keep a towel handy). MY fun tip of the day, (I can't recall if this was in the book) get a hot cup of tea or coffee, swish it in your mouth a few seconds & drive him crazy, several times. Have fun ladies, I mean that....& you will after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sure, it's giving! But equality comes elsewhere!.......2005-11-16

I had already reviewed a few books on fellatio - but the cute title of this text really caught my eye. "You Want Me To Do What?" It's not how I feel. But in these "I'll-do-you-if-you-do-me" times, the idea of giving oral sex might seem to be a little one-sided. However, when one really gets deeper into it (or takes it a little deeper), one soon discovers that there are a lot of other satisfactions to be had from performing this most loving of acts, (mainly emotional).

The book follows a very logical progression, starting off first with mental preparation ("Why do this?"), some definitions (like the "gag reflex"), and a recap of male anatomy (the most useful landmark being what the author calls the "Taylor Spot," after herself, which is the area on the underside of his organ, just below the head, which is where a man is most sensitive).

[...] On that score, the large page size and simple layout does give it some resemblance to a bound college thesis. This just means, unfortunately, that the text is too large to carry around in your purse - in case you forget what you're supposed to do. But there's another reason you might not want to read this book out in public - and that's because of the pictures.

Compared to the other works I've read, the most refreshing - and titillating -- aspect of this book is the fact that it is replete with PHOTOS! The images are strictly black & white and almost clinical in their matter-of-fact presentation. But they are certainly much more effective in communicating exactly what it is one is supposed to do. There's an erect phallus in about 90% of the photos (or a dildo that looks just like one) that is either being licked, kissed, and sucked, and then massaged by hands and between breasts! There's never more than at most an inch of penetration, so the photos are just a tease. But for those of you more apprehensive, seeing another woman's lips lovingly caressing and encircling the tip of a man's tool can certainly be very reassuring.

The author spends a fair amount of time sharing some external techniques, which she likes to give cute names. "Grooving," "The No Handed Catch," "Teasing the Taylor Spot," "Peek-a-Boo," and "Rippling," to name just the biggies.

As a hint for greater penetration, the author suggests letting him slide along the roof of your mouth as he goes deeper which will help to avoid the gag reflex. For fun, there's a humorous photo where the head - and the tongue beneath it - are both completely covered with Pop Rocks (carbonated candy) which is the author's favorite treat. There's even an illustrated section on how to use your mouth - to fit him with a condom (which is probably a good skill to know if I should ever decide to become a prostitute!).

In most of the photos, the woman's face is either upright (taking it from the front), or horizontal (coming down at it from above). The most daring view comes towards the book's end - when her face is leaning back - and her subject is approaching from above and behind her. This posture positions her mouth and throat more in a line, and the technique she's demonstrating, of course - is deep throating!

There are other postures in which to do this, but this is the only one featured in this book. Even so, I think many women might still find this dramatization to be very helpful. What's important here to understand is that the mouth and throat are normally at right angles to each other. In this position, the appendage can't go any further than the back of the mouth. Ladies, if you don't lay your head back - trying to take him any deeper will only make you choke! Trust me!

The section on swallowing is woefully brief. Taylor basically leaves it up to each woman to decide for herself what to do! As an alternative, she suggests having him finish across your face (which is shown in an accompanying photo). I personally found the thought of this to be hugely degrading. It's also missing out on a great emotional opportunity. Ask any man and he'll tell you that nothing says "I love you" more than swallowing - while not doing so, unfortunately, probably says just the opposite!

One of the biggest advantages of oral sex, which the author just touches upon, is its convenience. When women always insist upon having an orgasm every time he does (as female equality has told us we should), then sex, unfortunately, can sometimes loose its spontaneity. For me, a better type of equality for women (than tit-for-tat orgasms) would be to allow ourselves to be a little bisexual instead! Speaking from experience, nothing is more emotionally and physically enthralling - than to spend some time with another woman! It is, of course - why men love us so much!

To conclude, if you're looking for a light-hearted and informative guide to performing oral sex on your man, Taylor's "You Want Me To Do What?" might really hit the spot - without getting you all choked up! I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Great Information, Poor Presentation........2005-06-30

This book was written and published by Taylor. Mind you the woman knows a great deal about fellatio and the book is highly informative if you can get past the fact that this book lacks a certain amount of eye candy I've become accustomed to. How do I begin: the cover, the numerous photos that are far from publishing quality, the layout of the book, and then there is the writing. All of which is distracting to a very informative book on one of my favorite acts.

Taylor covers several wonderful things in this book but I was distracted by the delivery. Are looks important? When it comes to a book, it is to me. The message is good but if I can't concentrate due to the poor quality of the book what's the point? I just think this book had so much potential.

All that said, there is great stuff in this book that is good. My favorite is putting a condom on with just my mouth. Taylor pretty much covers everything from deep throating to popping candy all with her own brand of wit and slang. It's a great education but the delivery could use some work.

I gave this book three stars for the information it contains but couldn't give it any more.

4 out of 5 stars a Great Gift.......2005-04-07

This book makes a lovely gift for the young newlyweds, at least the groom will thank you! my sweet sexy husband, Norman, bought several copies of this, one for us, and a few to give away.

Grandma was over the other day, and was flipping through it, as it sat on the coffee table - my oh my - she was surprised! you may want to keep it in a safe hiding place, especially if you have kids in the house, or a mother comming over.

over all, it's a good one. Norman likes to think he's "teaching" me things, but, i knew all the techniques long ago - but he's sweet.

Norm asked Grandma what she thought, after she set it down, she said "aint' nothing new under the sun, but it's nice to see the pictures."

The book is beautiful. Can't believe the price...would have paid a lot more for the quality. My husband loved it too! We just celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary. It's a perfect gift for any newlywed or engaged couple.

4 out of 5 stars Great wedding gift!.......2007-08-24

I bought one for my sister and one for myself. It is simple and cute and takes all the hard work out of scrapbooking our anniversaries. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great gift!.......2007-08-22

We first received this book as a wedding gift. Each year we fill in the new information. What I really like about it is that it isn't so detailed and time consuming. If you're like me, if it's going to take too much time, it just keeps getting put off until you forget the info. This isn't like that at all. It's nice & to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Great find!.......2007-08-12

This was given to me as a shower gift with some beautiful pens. It's been really a nice ritual to fill it out with my husband every year and to look back and see how the story of our marriage progresses. I am giving it as a gift for the first time and an very excited to see how the recipient likes it.

5 out of 5 stars Our Wedding Anniversary Memory Book.......2007-08-03

I got this book for my husband for our first anniversary. I figured it covered the paper aspect as well as the time aspect of the gift giving. We enjoyed filling out the book together. The illustrations are beautiful.

2 out of 5 stars Only if you have doubts.......2007-08-01

This book will answer all your questions about training your dog but won't teach you much about how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to clicker training.......2007-02-19

I've known about clicker training for years now, but I always dismissed it as a valid training method. I didn't see how you could reliably train a dog when you were dependent on a clicker and food treats. After reading this book I've had all my questions answered.

Melissa Alexander fully explains all aspects of clicker training, as well as some of the concepts of operant conditioning. The book is laid out in a Q & A format and each question has a sidebar with related questions to refer to. I found this feature incredibly useful as the questions in the sidebar were nearly always questions that had already popped into my head. She also offers quotes and success stories that are both encouraging and humorous (like the dog who unintentionally learned to put her head in a box instead of her toy). The sections covering reinforcement and punishment was very clear and really helped me to understand why this training method works so well.

While I wouldn't recommend this book as a stand-alone clicker manual (it's mainly about theory; not much on training specific behaviors), it's an excellent book for what it is. Definitely something you should add to your bookshelf if you're new to clicker training.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-01-17

I had read a number of books on Clicker Training, all of which were helpful to varying degrees, before I read Melissa Alexander's Click for Joy! As I read Click for Joy!, I realized this would have been the very best book to read first, as it covered all my questions so completely. Of course, it was a great book to read after having read all the other books I've read for the same reason. The way the author has organized the material is very helpful for all kinds of mind sets. Someone who wants to read the book through from A to Z gets great foundation before going onto more techical information, but if you are like me, when I read about something, I tend to have all kinds of questions that I'd like to address right now. Ms. Alexander has organized each page with cross references to more information on particular subjects on that page. The language is easy to understand, as though you are having a personal visit with Melissa. She also has a chapter explaining in detail how to train a number of basic behaviors to perfection... very detailed explanations. After going through these basic behaviors, she explains how to organize your own plan for trainng other behaviors. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Clicker Training.

I have found Peggy Tilman's book, Clicking with Your Dog, Step-by-Step in Pictures, to be a great companion book to Click for Joy! because it goes into picture detail for many more behaviors beyond the basic behaviors in Melissa Alexander's book. IF a person is limited in book funds and wants to understand clicker training, these are the two books I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Goof Proof Your Clicking.......2006-08-16

What a great way to see what potential you have for correcting a mistake before you do it. I am training two pups at once. Sure enough, as soon as one of them gets it, the other does too. So, if I make a mistake they will both learn it. This book handles the individuality of each dog and lets you see ways to better your abilities by zeroing in on potential problems before they occur. I am using it with the excellent Clicking with your Dog book and think the set makes a perfect combination for the joy of clickertraining. Also, little hints like what kind of treats to use, alternates to food, etc. make this full of useful surprises. Also, the advice on how to make the behavior "perfect" lets you know how far to push each activity before moving on to the next. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent training book!.......2006-08-10

This book is excellent in every way. Melissa Alexander writes in a style that is both substantial and understandable and this is one of the most user-friendly books I have ever read.

I am definitely a better clicker trainer as a result of having read this book. From now on when I recommend a book to get started with clicker training, it will be this one.

5 out of 5 stars Essential knowledge for those who make beer at home.......2007-09-15

I bought this book as a stepping stone into the world of creating beer. Not only does this humorous and insightful tome offer advice on the essential equipment needed to brew beer, but does so in a way that is wonderfully organized and succinct. Mr. Papazian's book covers every aspect of beginning homebrewing and better homebrewing, as well as offering a glimpse of the more advanced world of creating your own wort from grain. The three main sections of this book are divided into skill and experience level, are very well organized and leave you with the feeling that anyone can make good beer. If you want to start brewing your own beer at home, buy this book and "How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time" by John Palmer. You won't be sorry you purchased these books.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners to intermediate.......2007-09-03

This book was at my side when I started homebrewing and I strongly recommend it for beginners. I found that getting over the hurdle of brewing the first batch was the most intimidating thing, and brewing becomes much easier starting with you second batch. This book is excellent at walking a total newbie like I was through the process of the first batch. Plenty of detail, descriptions and steps laid out. The book also has a good catalog of different beer types from around the world, a handy guide to their ingredients, and then a long list of straitforward recipes that help you brew them. Pretty good hops list too. I've recommended this book to anyone I know who's getting started.

5 out of 5 stars All brewers should have this book.......2007-08-23

This book is excellent in every regard. I have not been brewing long, but it has thus far been both a good introduction and a huge reference for all kinds of products and processes in brewing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-08-09

This was a wonderful purchase filled with lots of good information. I am a new homebrewer and really enjoyed learning more about it

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start.......2007-04-28

I've been homebrewing for a year now, and I have used this book extensively during that time. In fact, I still use this book. It is full of all sorts of helpful information and techniques. Also, it provides good background information. This can be used as a sort of manual for homebrewing but it can also simply be read; some of the stuff in the book is fascinating even if you're not ready to start brewing yet. This book can easily get you through your first couple years of homebrewing without the need for additional sources. For those of you who are jsut starting, best of luck!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2007-09-21

This is the standard reference on the subject, but I found it very disappointing. The chapters felt disjointed to me. But what is more problematic is the lack of rigor in the writing. For example, terms are used without being precisely defined; assumptions are made without this being made explicit; and descriptions are given without precision. (A good example of the latter is the section on Huffman coding, where the algorithm is "specified" by giving two examples.)

The book may be good as a reference (time will tell...) but I did not find it good for learning the material.

3 out of 5 stars topics are OK. poorly written.......2007-06-01

Believe me, I have read many many textbooks. Not one is like this book. The problem is that the authors don't explain, to an extent where terms are not clearly defined. I have to frequently stop and GUESS what the authors mean by the symbols and terms, and writing something in that particular way. The flow of understanding is constantly stopped by these intensionally introduced hurdles. I say intensional because from the preface of the book I see that the authors are pretty proud of that.

I think I am already quite good at guessing what the authors of other books occasionally skip. But this one really annoys me. I think it is really a waste of time to have to guess something that is just basic definition.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-05-14

Honestly, this is a great book on Information Theory. Though, I must admit, I was petrified when I got it. I didn't buy it directly from Amazon, but from some other vendor, and when I receive it, the front and back page was all in Chinese! It happens to be someone who bought it in China (for a tenth of the price) broght it to America and sold it. The text itself was in English, fortunately. That's why this days I don't buy anything in Amazon that is not directly from Amazon, unless it is strictly necessary!

5 out of 5 stars Updated, reorganized, expanded Second Edition.......2007-03-25

The preface of this book says, 'This is intended to be a simple and accessible book on information theory.' That's true, but it is aimed at the senior year or early graduate level where a theoretical background is needed for computer science, communications engineering, applied mathematics or similar fields. The mathematical nature of the book says that the student should at least have a background through calculus and a couple of upper level courses in statistics/probability. After all, Information Theory is generally considered to be a branch of applied mathematics.

On the whole, the writing style of the book (other than the equasions) is rather light and entertaining. For instance his discussion on the similarities between gambling and data compression brings a rather complex notion down something we can identify - that's before he gets into the math of course.

One complaint about the first edition of the book was that it didn't have enough problems for the student. This has been solved by the addition of a couple of hundred additional problems. There is also a dedicated web site for this book with more material, including solutions to selected problems.

3 out of 5 stars A good survey of Information Theory.......2007-02-08

Elements of Information Theory was the book I used in graduate school. It takes a topical approach to the subject from standard topics like source and channel coding, esoteric concepts like Kolmogorov complexity, to applied topics like how to get rich by applying Information theory to horse racing and the stock market. Overall I thought it was a good book. It is well written and exposes the grandure of subject. However what it provides in bredth it takes away in depth. Several topics, including fundemental ones like entropy, while well illustrated are not at all motivated - they are just given as definitions. In this I feel Galleghers book is superior. Also there is a real dearth of problems, its unusual to do all the problems in a book and feel you have not done enough to understand the material. Many a time I found myself scouring the web for more problems to augment the ones provided. So if you are looking for a broad view of the subject of information theory, this is the book to buy. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of the fundamental topics get Gallegher.

Book Description

Now available in a 35th anniversary edition, this book describes what happens to us whenever we lose someone or something important. We all need a better understanding of the small griefs in life as well as those larger grief experiences that can overwhelm us. Here is a volume to be kept close at hand. It can be used over the years as you encounter a wide variety of grief experiences or as you assist friends in moving beyond grief to good grief. Examines the stages of grief, from stage one -- a state of shock -- to stage ten -- a struggle to affirm reality.

I worked for Hospice Austin and we used this book in our grief counseling groups. It is an excellent guide to the stages of the grieving process.

5 out of 5 stars Great grief survival tool.......2007-06-21

I buy this helpful grief guide for all those who are close to me who have the necessary grief steps to wade or wallow through.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Succinct, and Invaluable Resource for Grief Recovery.......2007-05-26

I was given this book when my oldest brother was killed in 1995. When your heart is broken and your psyche is reeling from shock, pain, disbelief, and loss, it is too much to fathom to try to read a long, involved bunch of psychobabble. Granger Westberg's Good Grief is an easy read and truly confirms that the stages of grief through which one travels are, indeed, normal. He also tells you that there are times when you need to seek professional help to guide you through the grief process. In the past 12 years, I have given this book to many friends and acquaintances dealing with various types of loss. To a person, they've all told me how helpful this resource is and have passed it on to others. This book is truly a Godsend to the hurting.

5 out of 5 stars A Blessing and So Simple to Read.......2007-04-08

I was a counelor for over 20 years and have given this book or recommended this little book often. The author speaks truth in such a simple and kind voice. I've been helped by it and I know it has helped those I've introduced to the book. Grieving is sometimes compared to the dying process discribed by Eliz Kubler Ross. Not true. Grief is so very different. The tiny size of this book makes it perfect for a grieving person who can barely read anything and certainly nothing too complicated. It's simplicity makes it a great book for all people. It can also be read again and again as the grief process continues and the griever goes through many changes which feel unique to them but which are usually very common to all of us who have had cause to grieve.

5 out of 5 stars Good Grief.......2007-03-23

This small booklet describes the ten stages of grief and is written in such a manner that it is easy to read and the reader need not read each section in order. It is a helpful reference book that is given out at my church's community grief support group, "The Comfort Zone," which is why I purchased a quantity of them.

Book Description

Written teen to teen as a first-person narrative, this is not a book about the Columbine shootings - instead, it's a story of faith, told in Rachel's own words. The book includes first person narratives, journal entries, drawings from Rachel's diary, and notes from her parents and friends at Columbine High School. Additionally, "me pages" (what makes me angry, what I'm aftraid of) encourage teens to explore issues central to their lives and faith. Highlighting Rachel's faith journey from the time she became a Christian, through her joys and doubts, her hopes and dreams, this story is a triumphant testimony that teens will treasure.

5 out of 5 stars engrossing book.......2006-11-13

I highly recommend this book. Based on her real journals, you feel by the end of this book like you knew Rachal Scott personally. Even though it's not the exact journal entries, Beth Nimmo, Rachal's mother collaborated with the writer, and you get the sense that Rachal's true character was captured. This book brings to life a girl mature and inciteful beyond her years. I was humbled and deeply moved by her total commitment to living out her faith in Christ. I appreciate especially her honesty. Her story brings to life the loss of such a beautiful young woman. You don't need to be a teenage girl to read this book, but every teenager should read it.Thank you Beth for allowing us to walk along side her in her last years.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teenage girls.......2006-06-30

I bought this book for my 16 yr. old daughter and her mind set has changed. After reading this book, all on her own she started journaling and recently asked to be baptised. I thank GOD for Rachel Joy Scott and her parents.

I bought this for a teenager I know and she loved it. She is a quiet teen but she made sure she brought this book to church to show it off. It is a thought-provoking book, very well written.

When I first began reading this book it was right when I first wanted to give my life to God. This book helped me sooo much. It's full of inspirational quotes and accounts of a true christian. Her story really had an impact on my life. I bought this book for a few of my friends so that they could also read her incredible story. If you read any book it should be this one!

I actually used this book to put all the recipes into after typing them into some cookbook software (Matilda's Fantastic Cookbook Software). The end product looked great! I'm buying five of these books and am going to give them away to everyone next christmas.

This is one of a very few items I have purchased on the net that I am "more" than satisfied with. I couldn't believe the quality of this book - actually, it is a 3-ring binder. And, I can actually run the pages through my computer printer (my penmanship is very poor). It's wonderful. I was very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Really disgusting fun for kids and adults!.......2007-10-02

Haven't you always wanted to have a truly encyclopedic knowledge of the absolutely revoltingly disgusting facts of life? Well, the most hilarious but well-researched facts are now available to you regarding pimples, poop, farts, burps, hairy ears, maggots, etc., thanks to Joy Masoff's Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty.

I can't honestly vouch for the fact that the book covered absolutely everything as the author claims, but it's really hard to imagine what she might have left out. There's some serious research presented here, along with a lot of laughs! Don't miss out on this book!

5 out of 5 stars Really Cool Book!!!!.......2007-09-25

This book is really cool! I bought it for my 10 year old son for his birthday. I know he will read it cover to cover and relay all the 'gross and disgusting' facts to us while we are eating dinner!!!! A really neat concept for kids! Gets them interested in reading while learning some unknown, gross facts! Recommended...even interesting for adults too!

5 out of 5 stars Education with a Twist.......2007-07-02

What a great book! My 8 year old was spellbound with it and he got an education along with it, and didn't even realize. Even I learned a thing or two, as well. Easy reading and so informative, great for "kids of ALL ages".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for keeping boys busy.......2007-05-12

This is an ideal book. I bought the book to keep my two nephews occupied during my daughters wedding. This book kept them quietly entertained and amused with whispered "look at this" giggles. It would be a great book for a boy of 8 - 14 yrs old.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2007-02-27

i bought this and the oh, yikes book as gifts for a friend of ours who was turning 7. my daughter (11) wouldn't get her nose out of this one long enough for me to give it away!! she loves it and is constantly reading little blurbs to us from it. great book for huge age range.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for the SCJP exam.......2006-12-13

The Java Language Specification, The Java Programming Language Guide (4th Edition), and the SJCP Study Guide for Java 5 (Sierra, Bates) are essential to passing the SJCP exam. The Java Language Specification gives you the important technical details that textbooks tend to leave out. The best way to use this book is to make small, simple test programs for each chapter or topic (the programs that the authors provide are too cryptic for my taste). This book is not a tutorial and you should have the level of knowledge aquired by studying the Java textbooks by Walter Savitch and/or Daniel Liang. It's also a good idea to have Head First Java (2nd Edition, Sierra, Bates) in your bookshelf with the others - plus anything by Cay Horstmann (Core Java I and Core Java II.)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-01-27

Just the book for the java hungry community. For those that are pressed for cash and cannot afford the book just yet you can visit the java dot sun website to download a pdf version of this book with minor cosmetic changes dealing with copyright. The integrity of the book is otherwise intact. The directory to look for is docs->books->jls. Cheers

5 out of 5 stars For the guts of Java, there's nothing better..........2005-10-18

Are you the type that has to know the "why" and "how" behind how a language behaves? Then this is the book you need... The Java Language Specification, Third Edition by James Gosling, Bill Joy, Guy Steele, Gilad Bracha. Provided you're buying it for the right reason, there's nothing close to it.

Contents: Introduction; Grammars; Lexical Structure; Types, Values, and Variables; Conversions and Promotions; Names; Packages; Classes; Interfaces; Arrays; Exceptions; Execution; Binary Compatibility; Blocks and Statements; Expressions; Definite Assignment; Threads and Locks; Syntax; Index

So why do I say "for the right reason"? Because if you pick it up expecting something else, you'll be highly disappointed. This is *not* a tutorial of the language, nor is it an easy-to-read conversation or discussion of Java. Instead, it's a computer engineering level coverage of how Java is structured and how it works, from the people who wrote it. As such, you're going to find information in here that you'll have a hard time getting elsewhere. You'll find out how the nitty-gritty of how things like classes and interfaces work, and how they *should* be structured. If you're just getting started in Java, you'll likely be over your head by the second chapter. The target of this type of writing would be people who are Java journeymen, and who have gotten to the point where they need to know some of the theory behind features and structure. You'll also need a book like this if you write development tools that target the Java environment. Armed with this book and a solid background in Java, you'll be able to produce software that behaves just as developers would expect.

Don't let the depth and complexity of the material steer you away from the book if you're ready to go deeper with Java. Just don't pick up the book expecting to learn Java for the first time. There are better books out there for that purpose. But if you need to understand the guts of Java, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have for the Java system developer.......2005-07-27

This is it, the complete and authoritative definition of the Java programming language. This edition covers the Java language up to 1.5, so it gives a full description of generics and type parameters, boxing and unboxing, enums, annotation, and all the latest. If you develop Java language tools - debuggers, compilers, etc. - you simply must have this book. If you care about Java details that much, you must have the newest edition.

The typical programmer, someone who uses Java for application development, probably won't find much of interest in this book. This isn't a programmer's how-to manual. Nearly nothing describes how to use the language features. The code samples just illustrate language syntax and subtleties. There's nearly no discussion of the Java APIs, not even the java.lang.* packages or language-dependent reflection features. These are not flaws in this reference manual - this simply isn't a book meant to serve those needs.

Despite its 650+ pages, this really is a concise, precise definition of the Java 1.5 programming language. If you care about the internals of Java or about OO lnaguages in general, then this book is for you.
