Customer Reviews:
Thinly veiled political propaganda.......2007-08-16
The book started off so well and then it went basically into political propaganda about how the oil and medical insurance companies run everything. I was hoping that it would be something like "Gattaca" or "All the Beautiful People", but instead the people are just being segregated because of their health. Realistically, the government would want people to be made smarter and faster and not necessarily healthier (though it would be a nice bonus). I was really disappointed.
good premise, not so good writing.......2007-04-30
After reading the back of the book, I decided to read this. The premise was unique and interesting, and it sounded good. However, after reading it I regret ever having done so. The writing was poor, and the author seemed to flit from one thing to another without a thought of consistency or plot development. One moment she meets new people, then she flees again, then she suddenly develops an aptitude for telepathy. Its hard to figure out where the author is trying to go with anything, and the book as a whole was just a mess. I definitely do not recommend this.
The Best Book.......2007-03-06
I chose to read this book for my book report, i thought it was just another so-so book. I started reading it and in the beginning it was a little bland. After the first couple of chapters it's an amazing adventure. If you like this book, or at least think that you'll like it, then you'll love The Barcode Rebellion.I totally give this book a 5.
If given the choice, I would have put it down after the first page........2007-02-16
I put this book on a list for my Young Adult Literature class, but now I wish I had of saved the space...for something better. Too much is covered in this book. Trying to make me believe we're in the future fighting against the evil Global corporation that controls everything blah blah blah over does the whole book for me. Could someone please refer me to a good Science Fiction novel...for Young Adults!
Prequel to The Bar Code Rebellion.......2007-02-14
Kayla Reed thought her life was over when she didn't get an art scholarship. But that was all before her father died and the Global Officers were after her. In the year 2025, you get coded on your 17th birthday. Kayla's parents had the bar code and her best friend, Amber, had it too, so why was Kayla against it? Kayla's father never wanted the bar code, but she didn't see why until her mother claimed it killed him. Since her father died, Kayla's mother did everything to get rid of her bar code and warned Kayla not to get it. When Kayla wanted to know why, her mother always told her it wasn't safe for her to know.
The bar code tattoo started in Europe and worked its way around the world. It becomes required in the U.S. halfway into The Bar Code Tattoo. Without it you become an outcast. Funny things happen to people who get the tattoo. Some miraculously get promotions, others get demoted until they become nothing. When Kayla discovers the secret behind the tattoos, she is fully against bar codes.
I loved this book because I always wanted to know what would happen next. The Bar Code Tattoo is the prequel to The Bar Code Rebellion. Readers ages 12+ will enjoy this book as much as I did.

Hats off to D.M.Cornish so far..........2007-06-13
I am a Library Media Specialist who oversees two K-4th elementary school libraries. Though not appropriate for the K-4 age range, it is a must have for a middle/highschool library. The title may seem misleading for some, it's a book I'd definitely classify as fantasy not horror.
The book's editor, Timothy Travaglini, seems to put it best, "If Charles Dickens was in a writers' group with Mary Shelley, Philip Pullman, Lloyd Alexander, and Clive Barker, and if he took it upon himself to write a fantasy novel, allowing his fellow writers open opportunity for input, I think this is close to what he would have created- a sophisticated, intelligent, deeply detailed, obsessively compelling, utterly engaging tale-at turns gripping, poignant, always exciting, and wholly original." I couldn't agree more. I can't wait to read Book Two.
Move over, Harry Potter!.......2007-06-05
(This Monster Blood Tattoo series is also available in a CD)
Watch out, Harry Potter; there's a new kid in town. He's got a girl's name, a heart of gold, and a mighty streak of bravery considering he's just a poor foundling. Yes, a foundling is an orphan, but, unlike Potter, Rossamund Bookchild grew up in a school for foundlings, surrounded by others seemingly like him. Yet Rossamund is different from the others: he's largely introspective and he harbors a soft spot for many of the monsters that stalk the Half-Continent.
Okay, so there isn't really a new kid in town because Foundling's Rossamund doesn't live in the UK or Hogsmeade, but the Half-Continent has its own thrills. A semi-medieval world full of pirates trading child slaves on the vinegar seas and electrified warriors, or fulgars, fighting monsters in the name of the Emperor, Rossamund's land is intriguing indeed.
During his eventful journey from Madam Opera's Estimable Marine Society for Foundling Boys and Girls to his first job as a lamplighter in High Vesting, Rossamund falls in with a particularly adept fulgar, Europe, and a jolly, quick-thinking postman, Fouracres. Undoubtedly, it will be the adventures of this trio that D.M. Cornish explores in the following books, as Foundling is the first in the Monster Blood Tattoo series. But Rossamund has left behind dear friends at school-all adults, the only ones mature enough to appreciate the boy's heart-who are bound to show up again with their own troubles.
Aside from the exciting plot and lovable characters, what really makes this book is the fact that Cornish is an illustrator. Sketches of characters in fantastic costumes and intricately detailed maps of the empire show up occasionally. Plus, the book contains a glossary of words peculiar to the Half-Continent, charts explaining the imperial calendar, and drawings of the many types of boats.
As you say cheerio to Harry Potter and his friends this summer, hop into a landaulet and get ready to explore the threwdish woods because Rossamund Bookchild is waiting.
Armchair Interviews says: If you want to know what those words mean? Get a copy of Foundling and start reading.
A new series perfect for readers looking for something a little out of the ordinary.......2007-02-10
Rossamund Bookchild --- a boy with a girl's name --- is a foundling who has lived in Madam Opera's Estimable Marine Society for Foundling Boys and Girls ever since he was discovered as a newborn abandoned on Madam Opera's doorstep. Rossamund's early beginnings are unique but hardly uncommon as he lives with several other orphaned or unwanted kids. The children are given a quality education ---- which includes defense against monsters --- and are trained to lead productive careers, often in the navy.
While he has many promising opportunities, living in the Society isn't always easy for Rossamund. The boy is often teased by other children and tormented by a notorious bully named Gosling, who believes he's better than everyone else because of his manor-born childhood. Although Rossamund is given extra attention by his aging Dormitory Master Fransitart, the marine society's dispensurist Master Craumpalin and the beautiful parlour maid Verline, he anxiously waits to leave the crowded orphanage and get the chance to explore the rest of the wide, mysterious Half-Continent.
Then an agent named Sebastipole makes an unexpected visit and offers Rossamund an apprenticeship as a lamplighter. Rossamund is disappointed as he looked forward to a career like that of his mentor Fransitart but nonetheless takes the agent's offer as his great opportunity to leave the marine society and begin the next chapter of his life. After much preparation and anxious waiting, the day arrives and Rossamund sets out on his journey to High Vesting. He is given instructions to take a ship that will bring him to his destination. Unfortunately luck is not on his side and he is lured onto a run-down cromster called the Hogshead manned by the cunning Rivermaster Poundinch, who deals in the gruesome dark trades. However, Rossamund's fate is yet to be sealed and he makes his grand escape under a hail of cannon fire a few days later.
The excitement is far from over for Rossamund when he crosses paths with an infamous fulgar (an electrifying type of monster hunter) named Miss Europe --- known for her numerous monster-blood tattoos --- and her creepy factotum (personal servant) Licurius. What is supposed to be a simple ride-along leads to another part of what is already turning out to be an epic adventure for the young foundling as he figures out his place in the world.
MONSTER BLOOD TATTOO is a well-crafted original new series by up-and-coming writer D.M. Cornish that is sure to create buzz among fans of fantasy and those who like to read something a little out of the ordinary. With a detailed Explicarium (a glossary of terms and explanations including appendices), Cornish brings to life the compelling Dickens-like story of a boy making his way in a complex, wildly imaginative world.

Amazing!.......2006-12-29
Finally, a fantasy book I can get into! I'm so sick of the Tolkien-style fantasy being regurgitated again and again and again and again and it was so wonderfully refreshing to have someone with the same level of passion, concept, and world-building skills as Tolkien, but a world that is all his own. I have always been more of a monster hunter fan and I knew I had to have this book once I learned that montser hunters - or bogle-fighters, if you will - were going to play such a key role in this. I love this world and this series. So, thank you, D.M. Cornish for telling us your story and revealing to us your world!
Great world-building.......2006-12-04
This novel was a pleasant surprise for me. From the rather awful title and cover, I pictured an intense horror story filled with evil, haunting monsters . . . but thank goodness it was nothing like that.
Rossamund, a boy at Madame Opera's Marine Society for Foundling Boys and Girls, longs for adventure. When a man comes looking for a boy to hire, he sets off at last on a journey to become a lamplighter for the Emperor.
At times Rossamund seemed a little too simple of a character, but the other characters definitely made up for that. I especially liked Europe and Freckles. The different monsters and bogles were interesting to read about as well. Most of the descriptions were very cool, making you picture the scene perfectly, but some were a little overdone.
I was deeply impressed by the author's hugely in-depth world-building skills. One third of the book is an appendix, with the meanings of different terms he's invented for the world of the "Half Continent". I loved the author's illustrations in each chapter as well.
All-in-all this was a fun tale of adventure that will amuse and intrigue readers of fantasy. I most likely will pick up the sequel. ***1/2

Book Description
Jack's best mate, Charlie, has always been effortlessly cool. When Charlie wakes up one day and finds a mysterious, moving black tattoo on his back, it's a clear sign that he's even cooler than Jack thought. To top it off, Charlie is suddenly able to fight like a kung-fu master, fly, and control the minds of others. Yes, he's got super powers.
Or does he?
Jack soon learns the terrifying truth: Charlie's incredible powers come from an age-old demon called the Scourge, who is using Charlie to bring about its evil master plan. To stop the Scourge, Jack and Charlie join forces with Esme, a girl with super powers of her own, trained from birth to fight the demon. But time is running out, as Charlie falls deeper under the Scourge's dark spell.
When the Scourge vanishes with Charlie, Jack and Esme follow their friend from the streets of London into Hell itself, where they face horrors that may well cost them their lives. Can they survive to outwit the Scourge, save Charlie, and stop an even greater evil?
Customer Reviews:
Best book I've read so far this year!.......2007-05-13
This book is simply excellent. I had expected this book to be a good read, but not THAT good of a read. This book is filled with fantasy, magic, a wonderful plot, twists and turns, interesting characters that come alive, magic and more. Anybody that graded this three stars or lower...well? I don't know why. Hmm?
This story starts with two normal teenage boys, Charlie and Jack. Even though they are both ENTIRELY different people they've still been best friends for as long as they can remember. They end up running into a man named Nick who is the leader for a small group of people called "The Brotherhood". The Brotherhood's job is to keep a demon called the Scourge from escaping and going back to Hell. They don't exactly KNOW his intentions but they do know that they are very bad. The Scourge has been let out and it's up to Jack, Charlie (?), and a butt-kicking woman from the Brotherhood, Esme to stop the caos and save the world from the forces of Hell. They'll be going on an adventure they'll NEVER forget.
I hope that you all at least try this book and I hope that you enjoy as much as I did.
HAPPY READING!
Gladiator meets The Matrix.......2007-03-08
It took me weeks to read this book
Much longer than it should
It's long and sometimes rambles, though
It's basically quite good
For several thousand years or more
Entrapped beneath a tree
There lies the evil demon Scourge
Who's yearning to get free
He snares an unsuspecting host
To help with his escape
The Black Tattoo's his trademark
And it's always changing shape
A battle with the Brotherhood
Soon puts them to the test
Can Esme and the loyal Jack
Derail the Scourge's quest?
A tale of evil and of good
With other stuff as well
A floating shark, a bat and
Gladiators down in hell
The dialogue is sometimes weak
The plot may be confusing
But though this novel is quite dark
You'll find some parts amusing
For readers who are 9 and up
And know what they're about
It isn't Harry Potter
But it's well worth checking out
Amanda Richards, March 8, 2007
Very interesting read.......2007-01-25
I got the book on tape out of the library and wasn't sure what to expect. Overall, I liked the storyline a lot though some did drag a bit. I agree with one of the other reviews, some of the dialogue was cliched, but I did find myself laughing out loud quite a few times...the chinge (spelling?) was one of the funniest to me. The descriptions of hell were pretty cool, and I like that most of the second half of the book took place there. Those parts were much more interesting.
I recommend it to anyone that likes fantasy.
Good story for kids. Much less for adults........2007-01-18
This book will appeal to kids who are fantasy fans but offers far less crossover appeal to adults than the classics of the genre (e.g. Harry Potter or A Wrinkle in Time). While there are many creative bits (Godfrey, for example) the writing is *very* straight-forward and plodding. This is not to say it is poor, but it offers little to keep an older mind engaged. Recommended for kids 9-16 or so, but if you are an adult fantasy fan or precocious child I'd recommend you give it a miss.
Sam Enthoven maintains his marvelous standards.......2007-01-18
The Black Tattoo is a fantastic book that I would advise everyone to read. It is a story of friendship through hardship and of how true friends can conquer all. It is comedic at times, and the characters seem incredibly real. Leigh

again: quality from hardy marks publications.......2000-07-05
do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history should have this book. and all the other four issues. they are all out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by don ed hardy. whom you should know.
this volume is entitled "tattoo magic" and covers the following topics:
1. religious christian tattoos. apparently it already says in the bible that you should not tattoo your skin. here they elaborate on that believe, and prove that according to history it can't just be quite true...
2. inventive "cover-ups". here they show step by step progress of the cover-ups. all of them perfectly executed by don ed hardy himself. inspiring for any tattooer, i'd say.
3. sacred calligraphy. this chapter is only two pages long, and has only a short text about tattoing in the holy language of sanskrit. nevertheless, very interesting. (it inspired me for yet another tattoo...)
4. tattoing charms. here you get good background information on how this is handled in thailand. and how important it is there!
5. dragon tattoo design. not much new information if you already know about this subject, but some great photographs of works of various artists are shown.
6. tattoo magic. tattoo magic!
7. interview with richard o. tyler. an interesting talk with an interesting person. richard o. tyler was, amongst other things, a tattooer who believed in the magic of it, used very special home-made inks and tattooed only according to astrological laws.
as in all the other "tattootime" issues, all the photographs included are very good, and so are the "suggested further reading" listings at the end of each article/chapter.

Book Description
Bailey Morgan isn't the type of girl who shows a lot of skin, but somehow, she ends up in a dressing room at the mall with her friend Delia applying a temporary tattoo to her lower back. Never one to suffer fashion doubt, trendsetter Delia knows exactly where she wants her own tattoo: on her stomach, right where her shirt ends—can you say "midriff"? Annabelle, the quiet one, chooses the back of her neck, and tomboy Zo plasters hers on the top of her foot. The tattoos will last for three days, and Delia's sure that with them, the four friends will absolutely kill at the school dance.
Unfortunately, killing is just what someone has in mind, and Bailey, Delia, Annabelle, and Zo are in for the battle of their lives. Along with her tattoo, each girl receives a gift—a supernatural power to help them in their fight. As Bailey's increasingly frightening dreams reveal the nature of their enemy, it becomes clear to the girls that it's up to them to save the world. And if they can get Delia to stop using her newfound power to turn gum wrappers into Prada pumps, they might actually stand a chance.

Satisfying Whether Or Not You Like Fantasy.......2007-09-11
TATTOO tells the story of four friends, Bailey, Delia, Annabelle, and Zo, who pick up temporary tattoos at the mall one afternoon. Despite the protests of tomboy Zo, the girls they put them on to show off at the big upcoming school dance, and from the moment the tattoos make contact with their skin, everything changes, and the girls are finding themselves with new and unexpected abilities: pirokinesis, transmogrification, mind control, and premonition. At first their powers seem like fun, especially to fashionista Delia, who loves the fact that she can now change the color of her nails on a whim, but it doesn't take long for the girls to realize that their newfound powers also come with new responsibilities, namely a great evil that essentially wants to destroy the world. It may seem a little cliché that at this point the girls of course realize that only they can save the day and restore the balance of the universe in time for the school dance, but it doesn't read that way. The girls are smart, sassy, and loveable, and each girl's personality is distinct and well-developed. The supernatural plotline is also done well, and the fairy world and ancient mythos is intertwined perfectly with the present day. Perhaps most impressively for a young adult novel, it's not totally predictable, and it's these fun surprises as well as the little details that Barnes writes so well that make this novel definitely worth a read.
A fun snack of a book.......2007-07-11
Lighthearted, fast-paced, and funny. I loved the idea of temporary tattoos bestowing magic powers. The mythology got a bit complicated, so I skimmed over it, and certain scenes involving humming and foggy tendrils didn't seem as scary as they should be. I never got a real sense of dread when the villain showed up. But I didn't really care, because I was having too good of a time watching the friends together. Delia made me laugh with her fashion obsession even in the most dire times, and petite butt-kicking Zo reminds me of myself or my sisters. I actually didn't see the ending coming, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Loved it!.......2007-06-30
I read TATTOO a few months ago and couldn't get the story out of my head. Barnes, a talented author, effortlessly weaves a fast-paced plot with memorable characters. I can't wait for her next book.
A trip to the mall can really change your life........2007-01-15
"Just another Friday afternoon trip to the mall.
We totally should have known better."
When fifteen-year-old Bailey and her three closest friends hit the mall every Friday, they expect the same old routine: Delia will swoon over new cosmetics and clothes, Zo will act as if shopping is torture, but gladly visit the food court, Zo's cousin Annabelle will quietly take everything in, and maybe, just maybe, Bailey will run into her longtime crush, Kane.
On this particular Friday, everything seems normal until the girls meet a saleswoman at a booth. The mysterious woman finds the perfect accessory for three of them: a metal choker for Delia; a crystal on a chain for Zo; and a hair barrette for Annabelle. Bailey, she says, must select something for herself. As she looks through the accessories, she accidentally knocks open a drawer, spilling its contents. What looks like a piece of paper catches her eye. It turns out to be a packet of temporary tattoos, and, encouraged by Delia, that's what she buys.
A short while later, while the girls are trying on clothes and discussing the big dance on Monday, they divvy up the tattoos. As soon as Bailey's tattoo makes contact with her skin, she feels a chill, then heat, as colors swirl and voices chant in her mind. She briefly passes out.
At first, her friends seem to have no adverse reactions to the tattoos. However, it soon becomes apparent that each girl has obtained a supernatural gift which is somewhat related to her personality and the placement of her tattoo. Introspective Annabelle, with her tattoo on the back of her neck, now has the power of mind control. Emotional Bailey, marked on her lower back, can conjure and manipulate fire - also known as pyrokinesis. Sassy fashionista Delia, boldly displaying her tattoo on her midriff, can transmogrify objects, reshaping them and making them into other things. Tomboy Zo, her best (tattooed) foot forward, starts having visions of the future.
The situation quickly becomes serious. The strange voices keep repeating foreboding words in Bailey's mind, speaking of the Blood of the Sidhe. That weekend, as the girls continue to experiment with their powers and research the Sidhe, Bailey's dreams turn to nightmares. The voices warn her that She is coming. But who is She, and what does She want?
When an uninvited evil crashes the school dance on Monday night, the loyalty, intelligence, ingenuity, and strength of all four girls will be tested. The tattoos and powers may or may not be temporary, but it is their friendship that must last in order for them to survive.
Worthy of a sequel, I recommend Tattoo by Jennifer Lynn Barnes to teens and adults who like contemporary supernatural thrillers that utilize ancient myths and give ordinary teens extraordinary powers.

Bailey, Zo, Annabelle, and Delia were at the mall for one of their routine shopping trips when Delia decided they needed a special accessory for the big dance. Stopping at a little booth in the middle of the mall seemed like the perfect place for each girl to find the perfect item. Delia, the shopping guru, chose a choker style necklace first. Annabelle found a pretty barrette, and Zo found a beautiful crystal that could be slid onto a chain for a nice necklace. Finally, Bailey started to look for something that would catch her eye. As soon as she opened a little drawer and saw a package of temporary tattoos, she knew they were meant for her. A voice inside her head seemed to tell her to pick them up. Not realizing that this moment would change her life forever, she purchased the tattoos and the girls went about their business of finding the perfect outfit for the dance.
Once the girls started trying on outfits, Delia couldn't wait to break open the tattoos. Since there were four of them and four tattoos, she figured each of them should wear one to the dance to really drive the guys wild. Delia placed hers first; she chose a spot on her stomach that would show when she wore a top that revealed a little of her midriff. As soon as Delia put on her tattoo, the room started spinning for Bailey. She heard strange voices inside her head talking about danger that was on the way. She was still a little woozy when Delia decided Bailey needed to wear hers on her lower back, and placed it there for her. As soon as Bailey's tattoo was placed, she fainted from the force of the power that slammed into her body. When she woke up, she tried to warn Annabelle and Zo not to put theirs on, but it was too late. Annabelle had already placed hers on the back of her neck and Zo's was on the top of her foot.
It doesn't take long for the girls to realize that along with these tattoos, they each received a power. Bailey is able to create fire with her mind, Annabelle can read people's thoughts, Zo gets visions of things that will happen in the future, and Delia has the power to transmogrify things (change the appearance of objects she touches just by thinking what she wants). Along with these powers comes a great responsibility. Through the voices that Bailey keeps hearing and the dreams she has every night, she learns about the evil that is coming to destroy the world. Only the four girls can restore the balance in the universe and save the day.
I haven't met a greater group of friends since Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants / Second Summer of the Sisterhood / Girls in Pants (3 Book Set). Jennifer Lynn Barnes creates a wonderful fantasy based in a totally realistic setting. The drama is mixed with just the right amount of humor, which will cause readers to fall in love with all of the girls. TATTOO is a unique story that is sure to satisfy any reader -- fantasy lover or not.

The last in the series........2001-12-03
The final book in this special edition Golden Books series of the first STAR WARS trilogy. RETURN OF THE JEDI finishes the saga begun in A NEW HOPE and continued in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Like the other two books in the series, this book successfully condenses the plot of the movie into a small children's book. Contains some great pictures. Alas, there is no mention of the speeder-bike chase and there are no pictures of the Sarlacc. That's about the only negative aspect of this book. If you've read the first two, this one is a must.
Great intro to Star Wars........2001-12-03
This children's book is a great introduction to STAR WARS. The book successfully compacts most of the important plots of the movie. It also contains some great pictures to go along with the words. A few of the words are difficult for real-young, youngsters to understand, but other than that, that's the only drawback.
An incredibly illustrated book!.......1998-07-05
My 3 year old loves this book. He carries it around with him, spending at least 20 minutes a day looking at the pictures asking me to read it to him. The art work in this book really brings the characters to life. I highly recommend this book for children and Star Wars Collectors.
Pretty darn good.......1998-04-09
This is a very strong book fitting all the characteristics into one great story that fits the star wars mold beautifully. I only gave this book an 8 because I though it lacked some explanation of some important features in this book.

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully illustrated book!!!.......2001-10-24
This is a sweet little story about five princesses that live in a garden. Our young daughters (ages 6 and 3) really love this book, and they would still love it even if it hadn't come with glitter tatoos. Jerry Smath's illustrations are beautiful. They are very classic and they capture the spirit of a young girl's imagination. The only improvement I can think of would be to make this book available in hardcover also!
Great book for little girls!.......2000-11-30
This is the second time I'm buying this book for my 4-year old girl. She loves the tattoos, which go on very well, last about a day or two, then come off with only a little effort. The story is nice, fairly short, and great before bedtime reading. I highly recommend this book.
