Classic Campaigns.. Billboard-sized images!.......2000-03-28
A great design reference.. and a visual feast. These are the roadside images we actually WANT to see. This collection of 166 outdoor works of art brings each decade of the 20th Century to life.. from the birth of the automobile through to modern times. Large images, usually one to the page and sometimes stretching across two, showcase the best in roadside advertising with original art and photos of supersites. Most of the eyecatching designs are award-winners and you can see why.. with traffic-stopping images and snappy copy.
The book's text is minimal.. but the captions tell all you need to know.. including fascinating trivia: "Although the Marlboro audience was originally thought to be female, a tough and rugged cowboy has long been the brand's signature." .. A truly fascinating book!
Book Description
Early in the 20th century, as Americans climbed into their Model-Ts and took to the open road, American manufacturers and retailers discovered miles and miles of new advertising space, and the audaciously oversized billboard was born. For a century, billboards have recruited, congratulated, teased, sold, and seduced us, promoting everything under the sun, from hosiery to war bonds, presidential candidates to rock shows. GREAT AMERICAN BILLBOARDS not only offers a lively look back at changing styles, products, and tastes, but is also an important visual record of this largely unheralded yet ubiquitous American art form.

May be the most comprehensive catalog of billboard photos throughout the 20th Century!.......2007-06-20
In 1908, Henry Ford introduced the world to his first Model T automobile, and with only 150 miles of paved road in America, the American billboard industry first took hold. Billboard advertising is unlike any other advertising in that the sponsor has only a few split seconds to get his message across. By nature, billboards have historically been about immediacy and impact. One need only look through Fred Basten's chronicle, "Great American Billboards" to see the sudden impact an advertiser's message must convey to be an effective marketing tool. Basten's quest began at a 1995 luncheon where he was introduced to Joe Blackstock, the historian for the famed outdoor advertising company Foster and Kleiser. By gaining access to F&K's vaults. Basten was able to assemble what may be the most comprehensive catalog of billboard photos throughout the 20th Century. From the early days of motorcars and now defunct consumer goods companies, to the years of the war effort of WWII ("Smash the Axis. Pay Your Taxes") liquor, movie ads and cigarettes (including the famous Camel smoking billboard in Times Square) America's billboards reflect the times we live in. Basten chronicles the evolution of outdoor advertising from one-color product shots and clever slogans from the 20's and 30's to the 70's era 'less is more' statements to the 80's and 90's versions of the construction board, where three dimensional installations were used to expand the borders of the traditional board to grab drivers attention. (Shamu, anyone?) Unfortunately, most of the book relies on Basten's access to one company's archives and thus it's examples are more limited than they might otherwise be, but 'Great American Billboards' is nonetheless a look at our consumer society from a unique historical perspective.

Book Description
foreword by Joseph Thompson
This book accompanies the exhibition of artists' billboards that opens the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art's (MASS MoCA's) inaugural season. The exhibition comprises a twenty-work retrospective of billboards designed by artists over the past three decades as well as five newly commissioned ones. The retrospective includes works by, among others, John Baldessari, Geneviève Cadieux, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Gran Fury, Group Material, the Guerrilla Girls, Jenny Holzer, Joseph Kosuth, and Barbara Kruger. The new works, made in cooperation with the communities where they will be installed, are by Julie Ault and Martin Beck, Lothar Baumgarten, Sue Coe, Leon Golub, and Gary Simmons.
In addition to the descriptions and color images of the historic and new billboards, the book contains almost three hundred short entries, offering the first broad survey of the medium. More than half of these entries include a small color image.
The book also contains three essays. In "Disturbances in the Field of Mammon: Toward a History of Artists' Billboards," Harriet Senie finds precursors for contemporary billboards in European art posters (Toulouse-Lautrec), modern political posters (Rodchenko), and war billboards ("Uncle Sam Wants You"). She looks at the subject matter of contemporary artists' billboards--racism, feminism, environmental issues, war and peace, consumerism, and AIDS--and at artists' strategies and site choices. Public artist Peggy Diggs discusses the process through which billboards are made and the problems encountered by billboard artists, and curator Laura Heon writes about works in the exhibition, in particular the (often conceptual) billboards that do not "sell" any political message.
Copublished with the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
Book Description
Before MTV and VH1, before books with "Stories Behind the Songs" of popular recording artists, there were Fred Bronson's stories behind the top chart hits. Now in its 5th Edition, The Billboard Book of Number One Hits - revised, expanded, and completely updated - once again provides the inside scoop behind every song to reach the pinnacle of the best-known, most respected record chart in the world, Billboard's Hot 100.
The ultimate music reference source for all pop music fans, the book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of every song to reach the top of the chart since 1955. Entries include interesting anecdotes from the artists, songwriters, producers, and label executives responsible for creating the hit, as well as a brief history of the song in relation to the artist's career, plus the record label and number, the songwriter and producer, and the chart entry date, chart entry position, date the song reached the number one position, and the number of weeks on the chart.
Also included with each entry is a listing of the top five hits the week that each song reached the top spot, as well as pop appendices such as "Debuts at Number One," "The Biggest Jumps to Number One," "The Biggest Falls from Number One," "The Most Number Ones," "The Most Weeks at Number One," and "The Longest Chart Spans of Number One Songs."
Among the artists interviewed in the new edition are Clay Aiken, Ashanti, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Nelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Beyonce Knowles, Enrique Iglesias, Ja Rule, Shaggy, Britney Spears, and Usher.
Incomparable and invaluable, the book the New York Times called a "treasure trove of pop lore" just got better.

A great resource for serious trivia players........2007-08-11
We play in trivia tournaments at local restaurants and reading this book prior to the games has helped in a number of our games.
The best hit review of the rock era.......2007-03-28
This is definitely the best book of its kind. 933 stories behind number one hits in the Billboard HOT 100, starting from "Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock" in 1955 to Clay Aiken's "This is The Night" in 2003. Fred Bronson makes each story worth reading. This 980-page book is also packed full with interesting trivia like the list of biggest jumps to number one, biggest fall from number one, artists with most number ones and many more. Definitely a real must-have for hit music aficionados.
A good purchase.......2006-11-07
This book is very thorough and well written. It gives a lot of useful background information about all number one hits since the fifties. It is a great book to read now and then or to look up some songs...I love it!
Very Good.......2005-09-01
It's a very good recopilation of the best songs accross the years. I'm going to enjoy it. Thanks.
SUCH AN EXCELLENT MATERIAL, I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN.......2005-07-30
Perhaps I am one of the few here in the Philippines who has been able to take hold of this excellent book of the pop music books...
I purchased it last December 2004, and up until now, I can't put it down, wherever I go, it's with me.
Where on earth can you find a 900+-page book that chronicles the history of the "rock era", as author Fred Bronson aptly calls it, all to the very littlest detail?
I love just looooooooooooooooooooove Billboard!
The Billboard Book of Number One hits is packed with information-at-hand about every record singles that hit the most coveted number one spot covering 48 years (from 1955-2003) and insightful interviews. And each of those titles has one whole page dedicated to each of them!
If you want to take a trip down memory lane, this book is a must-read. In fact, it has even pushed me to start this cool hobby of colecting each and all of the number one hits featured in its pages. A song's not a NUMBER ONE HIT 'til it hits NUMBER ONE on The Billboard Hot 100!
Kudos to Fred Bronson for such a dedicated undertaking through the years!
Book Description
This book is a thorough account of the year that caught everyone's ear. Elvis was sighted in the top spot of "The Billboard 200." The Rolling Stones rocked the album charts at #2. An "American Idol" grabbed Pop chart glory. Nelly nabbed #1 for 17 straight weeks. And, a bevy of female vocalists delivered huge chart hits. Only in Joel Whitburn's 2002 Billboard Music Yearbook will you find as complete, as concise, and as compelling a chronicle of all of the hits and artists of 2002. It's the perfect annual supplement to ten Record Research books.

Thinking Print-expansive thinking /curating by MOMA's Wye.......2002-01-13
"Thinking Print: books to billboards..." was a groundbreaking late 20th c. exhibition curated by Deborah Wye, a most thorough and original cultural /art historian. Wye is a curator with a fantasitc eye and an obsession for producing exhibitions and catalogs which explore their subject in-depth. In this particular instance, Wye is re-examining definitions and boundaries for the print medium in a manner that had yet to be accomplished. Her passion and scholarship regarding print, as a medium of expression and a medium for dissemination permates the pages. This catalog is a must have for libraries, as well as any serious artist, scholar or collector interested in printmaking from traditional to groundbreaking--from ink and paper to pixels.

A well-written, useful guide to horror on videotape through 1994. It covers a lot of films, yet is small enough to carry to the video store. Each title is listed with plot summary, fun-to-read review, date, distributor, MPAA rating (where applicable), running time, director, cast, and a half-to-four-star rating. Includes mainstream, cult, foreign (but not Asian), and exploitation titles. Has 100 sidebar essays on important actors and directors, and plenty of black-and-white illustrations. For a surprisingly high percentage of the films, this reviewer agreed with the author's even-handed assessments.

Intelligent, Comprehensive, and Concise.......2004-11-15
I had read both positive and negative reviews on this guide and figured I would take a chance. I found this guide to be comprehensive in its coverage of titles with concise yet informative reviews (do keep in mind that this book was published in 1994). James O'Neill comes across as someone who is a horror movie buff yet is objective enough to sort out the bad and the good in a very cliched genre. Since there have been some negative reviews on this page for the book, I present the following short summations as an attempt to answer some of these reviews: 1) This book is titled 'Terror on Tape' and therefore concentrates its focus on horror movies available on tape. It was never represented as a complete coverage of horror movies whether on tape or not. 2) O'Neill is not anti-slasher, just anti-bad movie. Too many horror buffs reviewing movies have a tendency to rate them on their gore, infamy, and nudity content as opposed to whether they are any good (plot, script, direction, etc). 3) The reviews are concise giving a basic plot outline, the particulars (actors, director, year, etc.), alternative titles, and of course his opinion. He accomplishes in his reviews what others have failed to do in longer reviews and does not attempt to spoil the movie. Additionally he does not borrow stock reviews and rewrite them for his guide as is a practice in many video review guides. 4) Since this guide concentrates on horror movies on tape (pre-1994) the coverage is obviously going to be slanted toward available titles on tape (although it would appear obvious, some reviewers apparently missed that point).---Although I do not agree with every review in the guide, I do find more hits than misses. It is additionally notable that it is obvious that O'Neill has seen the movies he has reviewed as compared to some guides I have read which left me wondering if the reviewer had actually seen the movie they reviewed. Unfortunately, that appears to be a common practice for the sake of coverage. You will not find that to be the case with 'Terror on Tape'. A comprehensive yet easy to carry guide.-Bob *[James O'Neill also wrote a companion book called 'Sci-Fi on Tape'. Amazon has it listed as well.]
the only referance book i keep going back to.......2001-10-31
i bought this book when it first came out, i was in junior high at the time. its been with me for two high schools and and two collage degrees. its lived with me in three collage dorms, three states, two countries and a half dozen apartments. i cannot think of any other personal item that has. the reviews are brief, but informative and writen with a visable appreciation for the horror genre. where other horror references tend to over explain the plots or not rate the movies, this book does not spoil endings and it cross references the relationships between remakes, sequals, knock-offs and source material. also the writter's personality makes reading this book feel like talking to your favorite video-store clerk. the only complaint i have is that the biographies are not in alphabetical order. i only hope that soon there will be a supliment published
Pretty Bad.......2000-07-13
In a world where so many books have been slopped together trying to cover a genre such as horror videos, this one is reallly the worst. A comparison would be the volumes done by Joe Bob Briggs, the CREATURE FEATURE sets, and so on, who don't think that horror films were non-existant before NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Very, very poor homework.
Smashing.......2000-06-26
this Book Roxs........ i am hoping that this man of mistery makes a conclusion of this book......Terror on Tape:The Nightmare is not over
Exceptional quick reference guide.......2000-03-25
I think the negative reviewers may have been seeking something else when they examined this book--this is general reference book that gives the reader a quick, concise synopsis & review of a great number of films. It covers over 2000 films whereas McCarty's (very good) Splatter Guides only cover around 400 movies each. I agree that the reviews are lacking in depth, but the breadth of coverage is what makes this book a fantastic reference. I don't know of any other book that covers so many films. When I encounter a new film or am trying to recall a film, this book provides just the right amount of information. If I wish to get in-depth analyses and do extended reading, I'll go elsewhere, but this is an essential reference book--the one I go to first. I only hope there is plan to keep it updated.
