Spurred on by another mysterious rhyme from Morgan le Fay, the magical librarian of Camelot, siblings Jack and Annie climb into their magic traveling tree house once again, this time on a journey to Merry Olde England--and Shakespeare's theater. Their quest? To find "a special magic" that will, "without wand, spell, or charm / turn daytime into night." Armed only with their backpacks and a book about 16th-century England, Jack and Annie manage to solve the riddle, save a bear from a cruel fate, and make their stage debut in "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
Following the wildly successful formula of her Magic Tree House series (Earthquake in the Early Morning, Twister on Tuesday, etc.), Mary Pope Osborne delivers another exciting chapter book for young readers (and read-aloud listeners). Additional information about Shakespeare is included, plus a partial list of the more than 2,000 words and expressions he invented. As always, illustrator Sal Murdocca's appealing black-and-white drawings are well matched to Osborne's story. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
In the latest offering from the Magic Tree House series, Mary Pope Osborne treats readers to an inside look at one of her favorite subjects—the theater. Jack and Annie are whisked back to Elizabethan England where they meet the Bard of Avon himself, William Shakespeare, and luckily for them he is desperate for two small actors for his latest play! A wonderful adventure as well as the perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young readers.

Bravo!Mary Pope Osborne Rocks!.......2007-04-22
This was my first Magic Tree house book and I was really impressed. The story was well-done, and the concept of the tree house time machine reminded me of when I was a kid with a tree house in the woods with books strewn across its floor. In a way, many of us did or do have a tree house time machine to carry us away on wings of imagination, and I guess that's one of the reasons why these books are so popular. Osborne is a skillful writer, and I liked that she was realistic about the medieval culture that the siblings visited while still remaining a children's fantasy. Many young adult books set in medieval times shy away from the fact that civilization smelled horrible in those days and life was lived unhygienically by today's standards. A modern person entering the culture would be shocked by the smell, and most time-travel books ignore this, even the adult ones. But it adds to the suspension of disbelief that in this story, Jack and Annie notice such things.
I also learned things about Shakespeare and his era from this book, even though I've taken classes on the Bard in both highschool and college. Osborne includes facts in an unpatronizing way that really supplements the story. The extra facts listed in the back of the book are a great added bonus, and I'd be willing to bet that most kids read and remember them as well as the story.
I'll be ordering more of these great books next time my kid brings home the old Scholastic form for sure!

Fright on a Summer Night.......2007-01-16
Mary Pope Osborne has found a way to make it enjoyable for young people to read. There is a series of her books which will keep the student spell bound for the next chapter book.
MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-07
My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
There isn't a bad book in the series...both my boys love them.......2007-01-04
I could write the same review for every "Magic Tree House" book. We were introduced to the series when my oldest son was 5, and just starting to read. We got the #1 book (the Dinosaur one) on audio when he was learning to read independently. Then he started to read the book along with the audio. Now, at 7, he is bound and determined to read every book in the series, in order, of course. He just finished this one. The words are fairly simple, so the series is great for kids ready to tackle chapter books - they won't get frustrated by having too many words they cannot sound out. They are all ten chaper books, with a little larger type and good line/paragraph spacing, making it easy for kids to keep their place. They all tell a little slice of history in a very interesting way. Everyone in the family learns something everytime.
This book was really, really, really good!!.......2005-09-03
Stage Fright on a Summer Night happened in England, which is where I live. Jack and Annie got to see Shakespeare, which I like alot. They did one of my favorite shows, which is Midsummer Night's Dream. I really liked this book alot because it was the 15th one I read this summer. Magic Tree House books are great because they teach you about all different places, people and things. They are great adventures!

A vivid reminder of a much simpler, more innocent era.......2007-08-15
I was fortunate to speak with Dan & be on panels with him @ several World Horror Conventions over the years. He is fascinating to talk to (as one would expect of a veteran English teacher) as well as to read. "Summer of Night", in addition to being well-written, harkens back to a time in this nation's history (early 60's) when being a pre-adolescent meant enjoying the summer in the company of friends (think of King's "The Body", origin of the film "Stand by Me") with nothing to worry about. In "Summer of Night" this innocent time turns sinister as these young friends are confronted with a vague evil which deepens, growing more dangerous as the novel continues. I strongly recommend it to older "Baby Boomers" as well as those who enjoy well-written, unique and engrossing tales. For those of you who are about to read this, I envy you the experience. Enjoy!
Not Bad, But Shoulda Been Shorter.......2007-06-03
I had high hopes for this novel. I've enjoyed Simmons' work in the past, and this book had a compelling enough premise. But I had problems with the pace. 200 pages go by before much of anything starts to happens, and, even then, the story creeps along rather slowly.
Well written and sufficiently chilling, with likable and three-dimensional characters, Summer of Night is a novel I'd recommend to fans of the genre. As a child of the '50s/'60s, I found the setting of the story evocative of those more innocent times. But I can't quite give it 4 stars- it should have been about 100 pages shorter.
I READ THIS EVERY SUMMER.......2007-05-31
I first read this book about ten years ago after picking it up on a whim. I've always liked horror fiction but had become a bit jaded by the offerings at the time. WELL, this book got me back on track! A gloomy old school ready for the wrecking ball, the beginning of summer vacation for the little kiddies, a group of friends aware of something very bad going down... I love to read this during the summer as it takes me back to my preteen summers (before I had to get a job) when you rode your bikes from dawn to way past dark and hunted for the monster in the woods. Except in this book, they definitely find the monster. Too many horror novels of this kind get a little too silly but definitely not this book. Plus, it gave me a new favorite author to read. After you read this, check out the sequel "A Winter Haunting"
A Horror Masterpiece.......2007-04-06
This book succeeds and delivers on every level that you would expect. It is a coming-of-age tale of friendship, adolescence, and terror. The writing is rich. Some may not enjoy some of the details Simmons adds, but it is necessary for the unfolding of the tale. Once the terror comes, it doesn't relent. I haven't been so scared and enthralled by a piece of fiction. This book is also an incredible nostalgic piece. It conjured up emotions that I seemed to have forgot.
Slow start, but a great read.......2007-03-08
I really enjoyed this book. He takes a bit to introduce the charcters and let's you get to know them before he drops the scary bomb on you. Once the bad stuff starts happening, you're totally hooked and trying to figure out how the "heros" can stop the evil that is befalling the town.

Love these stories.......2007-08-25
My son loves these stories and he learns a little about each destination. The only problem I have with the books is that proper sentence structure is not always used. Did the editors not notice? These books are for beginner readers, so it is confusing to them not to have proper "subject/verb" sentence structure.
Higher numbered books are longer.......2007-07-17
I have the audio CD versions of every story 1-24 and 29-32. I can tell you that the stories 29-32 are much longer than any of the books in the first few sets.
For example, books 17-24 have a total play time of almost exactly 5 hours compared with books 29-32 with a total story time just over 5 hours. So, you get 50% less "books", but the same story reading time.
I am just purchasing this set 25-28 now, and I do not yet know the running time of these stories. But.. you should evaluate the hours of audio enjoyment, not just the number of books when making your comparisons. Perhaps Amazon will add this information to the details, or perhaps I just missed it.
Why only 4 books.......2007-06-01
I agree with the other comment 100%. I am dissapointed at such a blatent marketing ploy to charge more money for less content. Done in the best "bait and switch", new and (not) improved tradition. I'll buy it for the same reason, but it is frustrating.
Why only 4?.......2007-03-23
Why are there only 4 stories on this set for nearly the same price as 8 on the previous three audio CD releases? I'll buy it because my daughter loves them, but I can't say I'm thrilled with paying only $2 less for half the content.

Customer Reviews:
Gone With the Wind???.......2007-09-18
First off, let me say that I am a HUGE Lisa Kleypas fan. No one writes a self-made man with SCORCHING sensuality like this author. She is in a league with just a few other authors...(McNaught, Garwood, Quinn, Howard, and Putney).
With all that being said, this was not one of my favorite's.
First of all, I really felt like I do when I watch Gone With the Wind. Scarlett is a spoiled, materialistic, self-centered character. The heroine of this novel is the same way. I tried to like Annabelle, but until the last two chapters of the book, I could barely tolerate her. She was entirely concerned about status, wealth, and landing a member of the peer. Shallow is another word I would use to describe her. Kleypas writes that she is this way to save her mother and brother from financial ruin and exploitaton, but I just didn't buy it.
Just like Rhett is obsessed with Scarlet in Gone With the Wind, so is Simon Hunt with Annabelle. I get frustrated when great heros get obsessed with shallow women..it seems like such a waste of a good man. For the life of me I have no idea why Rhett loved Scarlett and I am perplexed why a great man like Simon Hunt would be so obsessed with a woman's beauty that he'd see past her character defects.
I definitely will read the rest of this quartet...(Autumn, Winter, and Spring), but the first book is definitely not a keeper for me...a true rareity with a Kleypas novel.
Powerful start to new series.......2007-09-11
Annabelle Peyton is one of four young women who are having problems finding a husband amongst the British nobility for varying reasons. The four women, Annabelle, Daisy and Lillian Bowman, and Evie Jenner become friends and call themselves the wallflowers.
Annabelle's father died and left her and her mother penniless and Annabelle without a dowry. Even though Annabelle is beautiful, men know that if her circumstances become desperate enough they can have her as a mistress instead of marrying her. The wallflowers begin to work together to find husbands but Annabelle situation is growing desperate if she doesn't find a husband this season it is unlikely she will marry. Simon Hunt, a commoner who found his fortune in the locomotive industry desires Annabelle but he doesn't plan on ever marrying. However, he will do anything to get Annabelle. Unfortunately for Simon, Annabelle loathes him. Although she cannot deny her attraction, something about the arrogant Simon infuriates her.
This was a wonderfully written book and Annabelle and Simon were intriguing characters. The villan was sufficiently creepy and the action quick paced. Great start.
Secrets of a Summer Night.......2007-09-03
ISBN 0060091290 - Not following too many of the generic rules of romance novels has worked for Kleypas, making her one of the few romance authors I would read from again of my own choice.
Since her father died, Annabelle and her family have fallen on hard times, financially, when she discovers that her mother has taken a different fall of her own - assuming the role of mistress to a pig of a man to help pay the bills. Annabelle feels the pressure of the need to marry well, which will save her mother from Lord Hodgeham and keep her brother in school. Landing a man with a title and money isn't just an issue of snobbery, it's a must. Her upbringing has taught her that she should marry a peer and her families dire straits requires that he be wealthy enough to help them. Unfortunately, Annabelle doesn't have a dowry and without a dowry, she's just a pretty face, more likely to end up someone's mistress than the wife of a peer. After almost 4 seasons without an offer of marriage, Annabelle's on the verge of becoming a spinster.
Decidedly not the right man, Simon Hunt is the son of a butcher. He's wealthy, but in the low-class way of having worked for it. Worse, he likes to talk about work and making money. Some of the peerage invites him to places he really doesn't belong, throwing he and Annabelle in each other's way. She admits she finds him attractive, but she's got her mind set on marrying a certain sort of man. And she has a plan.
As the season began to draw to a close, Annabelle found herself sitting with 3 other girls. They'd sat together often, watching others dance, but never spoken. One night, however, that changes and the four girls make a pact to help each other find husbands. They've all got their own reasons for ending up wallflowers: Evie's family is wealthy but common and the Bowman sisters, Lillian and Daisy, are American and a bit too rough around the edges. They're only accepted at all into society because their father is very rich. The four become fast friends and the husband hunting begins with Annabelle's plight, since she is oldest.
The story of the girls' friendship is given more ink than the usual romance novel drivel, which is a huge plus. The girls are funny and real and I hope Kleypas realizes, through the next three books, that the romance isn't nearly as interesting as they are and keeps them centerstage. Simon and Annabelle don't follow the standard romance novel pattern too closely, either, with no other man/woman thrown between them and no major misunderstandings to muddy up the romance. That alone makes this one worthy of a quick read.
One Terrific Read!.......2007-08-24
This story was so beautiful. I love the entire wallflower series, I only wished I'd read them in order! Once again Kleypas has outdid herself.
Kind of bland.......2007-08-21
I'm glad I didn't read this book, the beginning of the Wallflower series, first otherwise, I might not have read the other three. This book is a very slow start to an otherwise entertaining series. It Happened One Autumn is good, The Devil in Winter is amazingly written and Scandal in Spring is extremely entertaining. However, as much as I didn't really enjoy Simon and Annabelle's story, I did enjoy reading about them in the following books. All in all, a good series and if you've read this one first and didn't care for it, don't let it stop you from reading the following books. They're much, much better.
Book Description
Long acknowledged as one of the most important literary figures in France, Marguerite Duras has garnered worldwide praise for her work, from the acclaimed screenplay Hiroshima Mon Amour to the best-selling novel The Lover. In this volume of four short novels, Duras demonstrates her remarkable ability to create an emotional intensity and unity by focusing on the intimate details of the relationships among only a few central characters: from the park bench couple in The Square (1955) to the double love triangle in Ten-thirty on a Summer Night (1960), each novel probes the depths of human emotion, of love and of despair. Exceptional for their range in mood and situation, these four novels are unparalleled exhibitions of a poetic beauty that is uniquely Duras.
Customer Reviews:
Save The Lover for later; start with the novellas........2006-04-15
Duras seems like the Simone Weil of fiction: her characters philosophize while they get undressed and into bed. While Duras covers the same material (man, woman, love, deceit) at least these are fine subjects in the hands of a master crafter. I don't think we can hold it against her for writing them over and over.
10:30 on a Summer Night........2006-02-21
Once again the holidays are here. Once again the highways of summer. Once again churches to be visited. Once again 10:30 in the evening. Paintings by Goya you have to see.Storms. Nights without sleep. And the summer heat.
However, a crime takes place that could change the course of the holidays. But when all things are said and done, what could change the course of the holidays?
This short novella is one of the best writings by Duras. The way a short (and dangerous) romance is described could only have been done by her.
A Good Introduction to Duras.......2003-02-23
"10:30 on a Summer Night" is by far the best of the four novels in this book, focusing on murder and infidelity during a vacation outside Madrid. "Moderato Cantible" is good but not as intriguing as "10:30 on a Summer Night" and is about an alcoholic mother developing an odd relationship with a stranger in a café on the way home from her son's piano lesson. "The Square" has some good lines but is generally slow, focusing solely on a salesman and a servant talking in the park.
beautiful.......2002-05-10
The first story ("The Square")is a bit tedious (or maybe the significance was over my head). It's composed almost entirely of dialogue between two strangers who meet in a park and discuss their rather pitiful lives. But the three final stories are truly beautiful. The language is so vivid that even reading the stories on a cold Minnesota night I felt the urge to mop sweat from my brow. The third story, "10:30 on a Summer Night," in which a woman watches the sexual attraction develop between her husband and best friend, is incredibly poignant.
I don't get it.......2001-05-02
Two of my closest, most intellectual/cultural-elite type friends have raved about Marguerite Duras. So I read "The Lover." Great story. Okay...they tell me "Moderato Cantabile" is her masterpiece. I search for an English translation, find this foursome. Terrific, I think, I can explore even more. I must ask the reviewers of this work...Have you read it all together???? Every story is the same, folks! This woman had one, maybe two stories (okay, Hiroshima Mon Amour makes three) in her blood. Take an alcoholic woman with a hidden sexual agenda, throw in an unfaithful (substitute uptight/unattentive, etc) husband...or father (oh yeah, don't forget the incest angle), then place them all in some tedious, drawn-out situation (aftermath of a murder investigation, waiting for a construction contracter, a storm, an afternoon on a park bench), then let them TALK. And talk. And talk. Get it? I may not be the super intellectual, cultural elite type, but I know pretension when I read it. Skip Duras. Or...better...read "The Lover," pretend you know all about her, and watch the others at a party try to impress you.

Cute but Tiresome.......2007-06-12
I have read more lesbian fiction than I care to admit. One Summer Night was certainly not the worst of the bunch, nor was it the best. I am not sorry I read it, nor would I have been sorry I bought it (my girlfriend actually made the purchase).
I found the last 40 or so pages of the book to be tiresome. It was the same old back-and-forth, will they or won't they that every romance novel incorporates to an extent. The trouble was that I feel like Hill ran out of things to say and so she dragged out the ending with the on-again, off-again. It got old. When it came to the actual end of the book, it felt rushed to me.
Still, I found the characters to be enjoyable, the scenarios realistic, and it was a quick, easy read.
Gotta love a Jock!.......2006-07-31
Johanna Marshall finally caves in and goes to watch her friends play in a softball tournament. Her friends have brought in a ringer, which is ringing all of Johanna's bells.
Kelley Sambino knows she's ringing Johanna's bells, but can't seem to get close to her. If it wasn't bad enough Kelley has a reputation of being a womanizer, but as the fall semester starts, she finds herself working in the same department as Johanna at the college.
Pick up the book and walk the hall of a romantic academia.
Boring!.......2006-07-14
Romantic story of how Jo hesitates to get into a relationship with a steamy young woman whose feelings for her are more than Jo can manage. I found the story a little slow and "going around in circles": repetitions of how Jo was hurt by her ex Nancy, how she is lonely, has very few friends, and keeps rejecting a persistent Kelly. Not the best lesbian love story out there.
Clearly Hill's First Effort.......2006-04-17
Johanna was betrayed by her lover three years before this story begins. She has strenously guarded her heart since then - telling herself that she was content, even happy. Then, one summer night, she met and fell for Kelly only to be told that Kelly is a womanizer much like the woman who hurt her so badly.
While the characters in this book both teach college, one is a jock, the other not. How they come together is the theme of this story.
The plotting on this book is thin - paper thin. But the characters, even the secondary characters, are people the reader would like to know. But after a while, you just want to shake Johanna and tell her to get over herself or find a counselor to help her resolve her fears.
Hill has the talent to bring her setting - almost a character in itself - to life for the reader - in her descriptions of the heat of an Austin, Texas summer, you can almost feel the sweat beginning to form on your forehead. She can also bring you to tears in her descriptions of a dying relative.
If you're new to Hill's books, do start with this one - you'll have the enjoyment of watching Hill's talents grow with each new book so that by the time you get to, say, The Killing Room, she will knock your socks off. But regardless of where you start, do not judge this writer by her early books.
Good book!.......2006-03-08
I loved this book for #1:the two women in this book were actual lesbians(there was no I sleep with my bf until I met you, and now I only sleep with chicks) and #2:It was a good romance.I liked the love scenes in this book(all except the one on P.185) and I liked how Jo was afraid to have feelings Kelly but Kelly still stuck by her and didn't leave.

Book Description
A little girl and her family are getting ready to go on vacation . . . or at least they are trying to. In the effort to pack everything that will be needed, there's bound to be something overlooked, and what that is provides a funny ending to this meter-perfect "twist" on Clement Moore's classic.
Customer Reviews:
fun.......2004-05-12
What a fun book to read. Silly story about the night before summer vacation (poem format the same as the night before christmas). It will get your children all excited about heading out the door. Really enjoyed it.
Book Description
It's "Sex and the Small Town" in three fun and flirty stories... You'll find both down-home dreams and big-time passion in Sander's City. The town's love affair with baseball sparks some scorching affairs off the field. And the men are fair game...
In "Hot August Night," Erin O'Shea is a high school principal with sports on her mind. The school's lack of a baseball coach coincides with her lack of a man. Luckily, bad-boy former pro Michael Manning is ready and willing to fill both positions.
"Heat Wave" finds Josey Cooper, a recently divorced drama teacher, rounding the bases with Chase Mitchell, the sexy manager of the Sander's City Flyers who is playing for keeps...
Skin-tight pants are hard to resist - especially when they're on a starting pitcher. In "Hotshot," sensible schoolteacher Halley Forrester finds herself loosening up with Resse Taylor, who's an all-star in more ways than one...

Three Hits.......2005-12-05
These are three hot steamy reads penned by LuAnn McLane, set in a small town of Sander's City which has a love for baseball making for a steamy read both on and off the field.
Hot August Nights pits the high school principal Erin O'Shea, who is prim and proper just like when she was in high school against the former bad boy pro-pitcher Michael Manning, who has had a career ending injury but was the wild kid from high school. Some things never change, or do they. When Michael takes on the coaching job at the school, sparks fly and tensions mount between the two and he finally realizes that his career may have ended but a new life has certainly begun.
Heatwave finds recently divorced Josey Cooper trying to do a makeover of herself with a new wardrobe and hair for all to see but still has a long way to go to be more confident of herself. Especially when Chase Mitchell, the manager of the baseball team shows an interest in her. There is major heat when the two are around each other but can Chase convince Josey he is a forever kind of guy?
Hotshot is the story of Reese Taylor who is the pitcher known for his cockiness both on and off the field. Halley Forrester is the physical education teacher who is on a dare. When things heat up between them and become steamy Halley vows to get past his defences and to get to know the real Reese. They have their differences to work through but in the end realize that love can conquer all.
All these spicy , sensual stories flow together and are well done by LuAnn. If you like steam, spicy romantic reads then this book is for you and won't disappoint.
Home run!! Very entertaining and sexy!! A page turner!.......2005-08-05
This is the first book I read from this author, but it will not be the last. I really love the way she writes. Sexy funny and romantic! I could not put the book down. It's a sparkly triple-header that will leave you wanting more!
Hot! Torrid! Sizzling! **Grade: A minus**.......2004-09-08
If SEX IN THE CITY, lightly covered in a baseball outfit, sounds intriguing than LuAnn McLane's, HOT SUMMER NIGHTS, is your reading ticket. I'm rating this A minus because . . . well because it was entertaining . . . and the joy of reading IS to be entertained!
HOT SUMMER NIGHTS is three sultry stories embracing small town USA, a love of baseball, and hot sex.
HOT AUGUST NIGHT:
Two old high school acquaintances meet again and begin a new and different relationship.
In school, Erin O'Shea was the ugly little duckling, the duckling who bloomed into the desirable woman. Michael Manning was "the" high school guy, the pitching star who made the big leagues. But now he is home, looking for a job, and for something missing under the big city lights. Torridly, he gets the job, the girl, and the missing piece in his life.
HEAT WAVE:
Josey Cooper is a remade divorced woman. Trying to rebuild her self-esteem, Josey is terrified to fall in love again. Chase Mitchell wants to settle down, but feels woman want him because he is/was a famous pro athlete. He feels like a conquest.
Note -- This was the only entry with an unsettling obstacle. Chase's quick anger is hard to take. The author wants the reader to believe he feels used, but his childlike behavior fills the reader with a lingering uncomfortable feeling.
HOTSHOT:
Now this was the fun story - ladies out on the town celebrating a bachelorette night. A group of friends having fun, growing bolder with each alcoholic sip, and wagering outrageous dares. Dares that ends their night and changes their lives.
The dare made Halley Forrester do it! But the enchantment sealed it! Reese Taylor is a dynamite pitcher who needs an attitude adjustment. Halley is that alignment.
If you are in the mood for a light hot read, then check out LuAnn McLane's, HOT SUMMER NIGHTS. Fun stuff!

Entertaining erotic read.......2004-08-21
First two stories were great...I skipped the last one entirely. I wish it had said somewhere on the cover that the third story was a multicultural romance--I've never read any and didn't think I'd like it. The first two stories, however, were very good and I enjoyed them. I would rather the last story was left out and paid less for the book!
A scorcher of a book.......2004-08-06
Hot Summer Nights by LuAnn McLane more then lives up to the billing of an Erotic Triple Header.
Hot August Night has high school principal Erin O'Shea trying to decide if she should hire former pro pitcher Michael Manning to job of head varsity baseball coach. Michael was the wild preachers kid and Erin the geeky good girl in high school but they both have changed. Michael is back to get some purpose in his life after a career ending injury. As these two butt heads over the job, they really steam up those summer nights.
Josey Cooper has done a post-divorce make over in Heat Wave. Though she looks different on the outside, she still has a truckload of insecurities on the inside. When the sexy manager of the local baseball farm team shows an interest, she can't put her trust in it. Chase Mitchell has had enough of baseball babes and is looking for a real woman to settle down with him. Chase and Josey in a room together causes a major heat alert.
Hotshot pitcher Reese Taylor has always had to proof himself on and off the field. He isn't prepared to be attracted to straight-laced teacher, Halley Forrester. Halley realizes Reese's cockiness is just an act. She vows to get to know this man. Reese and Halley really do set the pages on fire.
All three stories are intensely sensually and witty. The chemistry between all the characters is deeply moving and tantalizing. Each story really flows right into the next one. This is a must buy book.

Book Description
This captivating memoir of growing up in the first years of the twentieth century provides a window on a time past--a time before television and space travel, before radio, women's suffrage, and penicillin. Outdoor privies were being replaced by indoor plumbing; horse-drawn carriages shared the dusty roads with the first automobiles and the earliest telephone numbers were single digits. In the tradition of such personal memoirs as "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "I Remember Mama," this delightful tale will evoke memories in the old and wonder in the young.
Customer Reviews:
Good job Grandma!.......2003-10-11
This is the story of my great-grandmother for whom I was named. When I was a fifth grader I read the book and I enjoyed it. It was interesting to see that even though the years seperated us, we really have similarities.
Great Read.......1999-05-09
This book was great for info about the days gone by! If ever you wondered how they dealt with things then, this is perfect. I especially liked it because it took place where I live, Oroville California. ( a very small town.... )
Snapshot of a girl growing up in a small town 100 years ago........1998-05-14
This is abook well worth reading. It is about how life 100 years ago in small California town affected a girl who grew up from 1896-1914 when she left home to attend the University of California, Berkeley to major in science. Phoebe Westwood was a second generation Californian. Her family were basically English/Scottish.
The author talks about various subjects, food, work week for women, health, femanine hygiene, education, and much more.
In this book the voice of the young girl is never lost.
Yesteryear's Child is now on the suggested reading list for California schools in California History.
A must read for anyone interested in a woman's point of view about life 100 years ago.
